remember when I first delved into the world of self-improvement books. I was in high school, and it was a rainy day when boredom was at its peak. A book on the coffee table with dog-eared pages and underlined words caught my curious eye, so I gave it a read. I’m not sure if it belonged to my mom or dad, but it was Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking.

I

Back then, we didn’t categorize them as self-help books, yet I remember the words and uplifting affirmations that taught me about reframing negative thoughts, boosting self-confidence, and attracting positive outcomes. I revisited the memorable quotes and priceless one-liners over and over, etching them in my memory.

You can do anything—ANYTHING—if you think you can!

Thoughts and words form your mental images.

These words were like gold, and they clearly made an impact because here I am, over 30 years later, still quoting them!

As Editor-in-Chief, I’m always on the lookout for anything and everything that can make a positive impact and serve our central mission: to help people live their best lives. Be it through professional accomplishments or personal passions, products, services, advice, or those timeless books we keep returning to, there is something impactful for everyone, and we want to share that with you.

Chilled Asparagus Soup Ingredients 2 bunches of fresh asparagus 1 sweet onion, diced 2 small Idaho potatoes, diced 2 cups of vegetable stock ½ cup of heavy cream 1 lime (zest and juice) Salt and Pepper

Directions Cut asparagus into ½” pieces. Dice onions and potatoes. Add the vegetables to a pot with vegetable stock. Cook vegetables for about 15 minutes or until tender. Let vegetables cool and puree them in a blender. Add cream until desired consistency. Finish soup with lemon juice, zest, salt, and pepper. Let it reach room temperature and chill in the refrigerator.

This can be prepared ahead of time.

Pasta Salad with Nasturtium Pesto

Colorful Summer Wrap Ingredients 2 Sundried tomato wraps 2 Red Lettuce leaves 1 Yellow tomato, sliced 1 baby cucumber, sliced 1 jar of roasted bell peppers 2 slices of fresh mozzarella Fresh basil leaves Balsamic glaze Salt and pepper

Directions Assemble the wraps by layering ingredients. Begin with wrap, add lettuce, tomato, cucumber, roasted red peppers, cheese and basil leaves. Add salt, pepper, and balsamic glaze. Fold in both sides of wrap and place a toothpick to secure. This is a summer favorite, but can be enjoyed any time of year! Don’t be afraid to get creative and substitute any of the ingredients for your favorite veggies. Have fun and enjoy!

Ingredients PESTO 2 cups of Nasturtium leaves 1 cup of fresh basil leaves ½ cup of toasted walnuts 1 garlic clove ½ cup of grated parmesan cheese ½ cup of olive oil Salt and pepper SALAD 2 cups of bow tie pasta 1 cup of cherry tomatoes ½ cup of diced yellow peppers ¼ cup of shaved parmesan cheese Salt and pepper Nasturtium flowers for garnish Directions In a food processor combine nasturtium, basil, walnuts, cheese, garlic, and olive oil. Blend until smooth consistency.In the meantime, cook pasta al dente and let it cool. Sautee tomatoes until blistered.

In a bowl, combine pasta, pesto, tomatoes, peppers, cheese, salt, and pepper. Serve in desired bowl and garnish with cheese and flowers.

his article is not, in fact, about red bow ties. Rather, it’s about the color RED, fabulous BOWS, and extremely cool ways to wear TIES.

T

Last year, Quiet Luxury graced the runways with these three elements, bringing elegance and sophistication and making a huge splash. It was a total vibe, and I was all for it.

But fashion is ever-changing. Now that it’s a new season, here’s what you can expect to see.

RED will have a strong presence this fall, flooding the fashion, beauty, and décor runways. We’re going a little bolder with oxblood red in the form of long coats, layered dresses, red tights, and overall statement pieces. If you’re used to a more neutral or monochromatic style, it can be liberating to step outside the box now and then and turn a few heads. Let them know you’ve arrived with the boldness of color. Try going head-to-toe red with a leopard accessory piece, like an envelope clutch or a big leopard bow, to add an accent. And speaking of BOWS…

BOWS make ordinary pieces more interesting and elevated, making them all the rage. Collections add detail and dimension by featuring these feminine accent pieces, creating an aweinspiring aesthetic.

TIES made an overwhelming statement in many collections on the runway, interpreted by style bloggers as classic and traditional with suits and blazers. have always believed that using your gifts, whether in your personal life or career, to help others brings fulfillment and joy. It is statistically proven that people who find ways to give back regularly are healthier, both physically and mentally.

This understanding has guided my approach to my work and interactions with others.

I

Inspiration Through Action Beyond the newsroom, I have actively participated in community events, volunteered for causes close to my heart, and used my influence to advocate for those in need. Being a part of the community and working alongside others to bring about change has been incredibly rewarding.

For the last 30 years at WFLA News Channel 8, I have embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly.

Every morning, I look up to the sky as I walk across the parking lot in downtown Tampa, express gratitude for the opportunity to work in this industry, and ask God to guide me in finding ways to shine a light on others. Spreading positivity and sharing the stories of others are contagious, like dropping a pebble into the water of life, creating ripples that spread far and wide.

Mentorship and Guidance Over the years, I have had the privilege of mentoring young journalists and aspiring broadcasters. Sharing my experiences, offering guidance, and helping them navigate their careers has been a fulfilling way to give back to the industry that has given me so much.

Throughout my career, I have used creativity, innovation, and inspiration to make a difference.

Here are some ways I’ve strived to positively impact others: Creative Storytelling I have focused on telling stories that matter, stories that inspire, uplift, and bring about positive change.

Whether highlighting a local hero, showcasing a community initiative, or sharing personal stories of resilience, my goal has always been to use my platform to inspire and inform.

Innovative Approaches Embracing new technologies and innovative approaches has allowed me to reach wider audiences and create more engaging content.

From live-streaming events to using social media to connect with viewers, innovation has been key to making a larger impact.

The impact of these efforts has been profound.

By focusing on others and using my platform to spread positivity, I have seen the ripple effect of these actions: viewers have reached out to share how a story inspired them; community members have come together to support a cause; and young professionals have found their footing in the industry.

As I look to the future, my commitment to using creativity, innovation, and inspiration to positively impact others remains steadfast. I encourage everyone to find unique ways to give back and make a difference. Whether through your career, personal life, or community involvement, the impact you can create is immeasurable.

The most important way to impact others and leave a footprint on this earth is to approach each day looking for ways to help others. By using our gifts and talents to give back, we not only enrich the lives of those around us but also find greater fulfillment and joy in our own lives. H

ave you ever pondered the life of an icon? Imagine being in the spotlight since childhood, your every move watched and critiqued for over 50 years. Brooke Shields knows this life all too well.

From modeling and famous campaigns to acting on stages and screens big and small, Brooke Shields is one of the most recognizable faces in America. “I never considered myself that,” Brooke told us. “And now that I’m as old as I am, I’ve been given an icon title. Although it’s flattering, I do believe we’re all our own iconic beauties.”

Well, isn’t that exactly why we love this woman?

Brooke exudes what we want to see from an icon: a person who uses their platform for positive impact and someone we can admire for their long-standing achievements. She’s an actress, model, mother, and wife. She’s also The President of the Actor’s Equity Association, CEO of hair care company Commence, and the author of three books: Down Came the Rain, There Was a Little Girl and a new one on the way.

Brooke’s work ethic is one to marvel at and has been a constant throughout her life. For a woman who has already accomplished so much, what drives her to continue pushing boundaries?

“I just don’t like inactivity. I believe there is still so much to learn, so I just keep saying ‘yes’ to challenges and try not to let fear of failure creep in. There was never a master plan. I just kept moving through, and that happens to have resulted in a type of longevity that I am thankful for. I’ll probably be working until my last breath.

Or at least as long as I need to keep a roof over my head,” she shared.

At fifty-nine, Brooke is taking her icon status even further as a pro-aging champion for us midlifers. Her upcoming book is a poignant nonfiction account that provides an intimate and empowering exploration of aging. It flips the

script on what it means for women to grow older and celebrates the power that comes with aging.

Brooke loves that we get to write our own stories during this phase of life. And when it comes to beauty, she cautions us not to fall prey to curated images and comparisons. “It’s a trap that’s been set since the dawn of time,” Brooke says. “I really try not to go down the rabbit hole of seeing other people and comparing myself, but it’s easy to do. It’s hard not to want to look like you’ve got a filter all the time. I try to stay as honest as I can when putting myself out there, but I’m always going to make sure the lighting is good when I take a picture.”

I am a sucker for physical comedy. Nowadays, I look for roles I know I’m going to enjoy filming rather than simply choosing something to prove myself as a talent,” she said.

Beauty and skincare are all individual. There’s no magic pill. It’s much simpler than people want it to be. We chase new, hot ingredients when real basics like sleep, sun protection, and hydration are really the most important. That being said, I’ll try it all! But it’s not magic.

How do you define beauty?

Beauty is a sense of radiance and is enhanced by confidence and security, two of the hardest things to achieve. I think beauty is individual. It comes from uniqueness rather than conformity.

ELEVATE THE QUALITY OF YOUR CONVERSATIONS WITH THESE

ow good are your communication skills?

Most people think that they’re pretty good communicators. Truth is, even those who are relatively good communicators have room for improvement. The good news is that effective communication is a skill that can be learned, even mastered! Start with these tips: 1. Talk less. Listen more. Practice active listening.

Active listening is fully concentrating on what’s being said. Listen while believing that the speaker has something valuable to share. Listen to understand. Avoid the temptation to interrupt or formulate your response. Author David Brooks states of listening: “When another person is talking, you want to be listening so actively that you’re practically burning calories.”

2. Be concise and precise. People zone out if you’re too verbose and you, too, can go off on tangents and lose your train of thought. While repetition and details have their place, use it sparingly and intentionally.

3. Use reflecting (a.k.a. mirroring or looping).

Reflecting is simply paraphrasing what someone said to ensure you’ve understood the message.

People aren’t as clear as they think they are, and we aren’t as good at listening as we think we are. Reflecting shows interest and lessens misunderstanding. Reflecting sounds like, “What I hear you saying is [XYZ]. Is that correct?”

4. Consider timing. Save difficult conversations for the right time, place, and emotional state. If you’re feeling cranky because you didn’t sleep well the night before, that’s not the time to talk to your husband about an issue you have with his mother. Nor should that conversation happen in the Starbucks’ line. Scheduling difficult discussions smartly will lead to better outcomes.

5. Take a pause. Pausing creates time to process information. Asking for a pause, “Can we come back to this tomorrow,” buys you time to emotionally regulate and respond in a helpful manner.

6. Encourage questions. Some people don’t feel confident asking questions or even know what to ask. Welcome questions or make it easy for them with prompts such as, “I know that was a lot. What can I clarify for you?”

7. Answer questions directly and honestly. When asked a question, provide a direct response. If you don’t know the answer, be candid. Often when we don’t have an answer, we provide some roundabout response that isn’t helpful rather than being honest and saying we simply don’t know. Instead, practice saying, “I don’t know” or “I’ll find out and get back to you.”

8. Don’t mindread. Making assumptions will lead to problems, disagreements, and resentments. Not sure? Just ask for clarification.

9. Be assertive. Sometimes it’s anxiety provoking to be direct, but passive (or aggressive) communication can be damaging to relationships and is ineffective.

Use “I” statements and be forthcoming without being hurtful.

10. Be aware of non-verbal communication. How you say it is just as important as what you say. Your tone and body language are powerful and, even without words, can send a message.

Great communication skills take effort; the more you practice these skills, the better your conversations will become.

So, you can imagine how thrilled we were to have the opportunity to highlight Just BE. 72. Who doesn’t want to get behind a female-empowered Lifestyle Brand celebrating the beauty of self-love and embracing inclusivity and diversity?

This year, we attended the Just BE. 72 runway events at Los Angeles Fashion Week, and it did not disappoint. For this particular show, the Just BE. 72 brand please put theme as Denim and Leather showcased their adult clothing collection and introduced their first-ever youth runway show, “BE. YOU!” This event introduced the talent of 12 incredible youth models alongside their “Just BE.” adult show featuring 30 stunning models. It was nothing short of amazing. The energy, smiles, and camaraderie were on display, and a heart was at the center of it all.

The youth show, choreographed by the talented Lauren Lucy (daughter and co-founder) and themed around Bratz, was performed by their amazing YOUTH dancers, Krystiana, Madeline, Mia, and Zalyn. The adult show also featured mesmerizing

dance performances by Jada and Lauren, choreographed by Lauren Lucy, adding an extra layer of excitement and energy to the event.

The Importance of Rehearsal Night The Just BE. models gathered for a crucial rehearsal the night before the show. The Ask Us Beauty team witnessed first-hand that this session was more than just practice; it was a time for bonding and building comfort. Many of their models are not professionals, so the leadership team emphasized the importance of being authentic rather than striving for perfection. This approach ensured that their true personalities shone through on the runway, and they certainly did.

Friends of Nina Wigs for Comfort and Confidence is designed to provide high-quality wigs to children and teens battling cancer, helping them regain a sense of normalcy and boosting their self-esteem during this very challenging time. The program is unique in that it completely removes the burden from parents and caretakers to navigate this process, completely freeing them to focus on their child. The foundation’s goal is to ensure that every child or young adult who needs a wig will receive one.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: 1. Simple Application Process: A brief online form initiates the process.

The foundation aims to outfit fifty young people with wigs by January 2025, requiring an additional $40,000 to fund the program. The dream is to expand this support to as many pediatric and teen cancer patients as possible, ensuring they feel supported and confident throughout their journey.

I

recently resigned from a high-level position in Corporate America to pursue my dream of owning my own company.

Entrepreneurship has always been in my blood. As a child, my mom took me to the local bakery outlet where I would buy Little Debbie cakes for 25 cents and then sell them for 50 cents at the YMCA after school. That entrepreneurial spirit continued into adulthood. While I’ve started several businesses, I was always too scared to commit fully. There was always a reason to limit myself: lack of funds, selfdoubt, or insufficient time after having kids.

Several years ago, I started a business that combined my childhood love of rocks with my love of jewelry and college football. I sold licensed collegiate jewelry, and while it was immensely fulfilling, I didn’t have the courage to quit my full-time job. I had such a supportive network of family and friends, so why couldn’t I silence the voice of self-doubt to execute what others saw me so capable of doing? So, I decided I would. On New Year’s Eve of 2022, I opted to forgo an empty resolution and do a deep selfreflection instead. This resulted in my commitment to pursue my life’s dream of business ownership.

I promised myself I wouldn’t let fear stop me again. I decided to go all in, knowing it’d be one of my life’s regrets otherwise.

I invested in a business coach and became active within a community of other product-based business owners. I opened a small retail storefront.

I was feeling more inspired than ever, but I still didn’t have the courage to quit my full-time job.

My biggest source of satisfaction remained a side hustle and a dream.

My efforts started to pay off in 2023. Things started to click, and my business started to pick up steam.

During this time, my best-selling product line was from a company called Seasons Jewelry. I met the owners years ago at a wholesale show, and last year, the stars aligned, and I had the opportunity to buy the company.

Despite feeling professionally accomplished in my career, I knew I had to jump on this opportunity.

I completed the acquisition, resigned from my corporate job, and am dedicating all my focus and energy to Seasons Jewelry. It’s funny how seemingly unrelated experiences come together, and suddenly the dots connect. So many of my past experiences have prepared me for this moment. uccess has traditionally been defined by hard work, discipline, and climbing social and corporate ladders. Larger salaries, prestigious titles, and material goods like cars, boats, homes, private jets, and luxury fashion have often served as societal markers of achievement. While there is nothing wrong with desiring these things, it is crucial to ask ourselves deeper questions: • What is my definition of success?

What do I truly value?

A pervasive trend is the comparison of one’s life and career to those of others, often leading to despair when personal achievements don’t measure up. This can be misleading, as the outwardly successful individuals we compare ourselves to may be unhappy behind the scenes or have access to resources, time, and personal 56

development unbeknownst to us.

Given that we are all unique individuals with different needs, desires, and dreams, success should be individually defined. Your version of success can look drastically different from what is portrayed in mainstream media. It’s okay to desire a homestead over a yacht or to pivot from a sixfigure career to homeschooling your children.

I also see “successful” people who, despite making a lot of money, are miserable in their business operations, dislike their clients or bosses, and rarely see their families. What good is it to become the first million-dollar earner in your family if you never see your loved ones and experience anxiety, burnout, or illness along the way? Prioritizing balance and enjoying the journey is essential for sustainable success.

This includes taking care of your mental health, setting boundaries with your time and energy, and allowing yourself breaks, rest, and fun.

Our mindset is often the first area we should address when redefining success. To truly flourish in your life and career, consider the following questions: 1. Create Clarity: Define your dreams and goals. What impact do you want to make in the world? How does it feel to live the life you desire?

2. Get in Alignment: Ensure your current actions align with your future vision. Reflect on your daily activities and relationships. Do they feel heavy with resistance or light with purpose?

Are you wasting energy on tasks or people that do not serve your long-term goals?

3. Embody the Best Version of Yourself: Are you showing up as the leader you want to be?

Bring more main-character energy into your life and work. Are you actually enjoying the journey or constantly moving the goalpost?

Make more time for rest and fun! Simplify where possible to enhance your overall well-being (your brain makes decisions best this way!).

Enter pickleball!!! During a visit to California, I played with my best friend and was hooked immediately. When I returned to Texas, some high school friends saw me playing on social media and reached out to meet up the following weekend. Two years later, here we are, playing every chance I get.

Building a brand identity, and any identity for that matter, is critical in today’s saturated business world.

I always tell clients, “You have to figure out who will want to identify with your brand and become loyal. You will fail without a strong identity and presence because consumers can move along quickly. So, how do you stop the scroll?”

Understanding brand identity and how consumers connect with it, leveraging imagery through video and social media, and employing strategies for success are just a few things that have worked for my clients and me.

Understanding Brand Identity and Consumer Connection Brand identity is your unique fingerprint or DNA— everything from your logo, colors, and messaging.

These elements should be clear, concise, and easy to understand. Consistency is key. If someone has to read your copy twice or they can’t distinguish your campaign from others, it won’t work.

No matter what industry you’re in, brand identity aims to create something that resonates with consumers.

Identify your target audience, then work backward. Build a unique tone of voice (TOV) that guides all messaging, from Pantones and logos to social media and copy, and creates a human connection.

Leveraging Imagery Through Video and Social Media I often tell clients, “If you’re making people read, you’re annoying them.” In a digital world, people want to see

things on video. Would you rather read an instruction manual or watch a How-To video on YouTube?

In the beauty industry and now as a video producer and marketer in the pickleball space, I want to hear and see brand stories told by passionate people. Consumers are sometimes numb, but passionate storytelling—and lots of it—is the antidote.

It’s impossible to over-communicate, and social media is your megaphone. If your audience is young and hip, jump on Instagram and TikTok. If you’re an apparel brand, Pinterest is the thing. You need Facebook for event management and groups if you’re an event brand. If you’re in the B2B lane, a LinkedIn presence is critical. And I will always believe in YouTube as a living library for education and growth.

Just be sure to have a stellar social media manager who can effectively utilize each platform’s strategies and algorithms.

Strategies for Success • Develop a brand identity that resonates with your target audience, from your tone of voice to your logo to your messaging.

• Maintain consistency across all brand touchpoints, including your website, social media, and marketing materials.

• Leverage passionate storytelling across relevant platforms.

• Assess your brand by asking: • Would I be a customer?

• Do I understand their messaging?

• Do I trust them?

• Have I learned from them?

• Are they solving a problem for me?

• Be willing to recognize what’s not working and fix it.

• Solve a problem.

Building a successful brand identity comes down to approaching everything with your consumer in mind.

y mother, Shirley (88), and my father, Gernie (92), are self-proclaimed “vintage collectors.” Let’s be honest; that’s just a fancy name for hoarders, which explains why my sixty-year-old brother still lives at home—they never throw anything out! They’re predictable hoarders, though. I know whenever I go to their house, I will always find a mug full of pens next to the phone, and none of them will write. My dad insists that I “have some faith” and try to “warm up the ink” before giving up. I’m a good daughter, so I try, but the result is always the same: a piece of paper with a hole bored into it, surrounded by inkless scribbles. You’d think they would throw these useless pens away, right? Wrong! They go right back in the mug. My parents don’t care that the pens are as old (or older) than our President or drier than Aunt Suzanne’s meatloaf. They are to remain IN THE MUG. No exceptions.

Hoarding must be genetic because I, too, have a mug full of pens next to the phone, and none of them work. Oh no! Am I turning into my parents? Something must be done. My therapist recommended that I buy the book Tidying Up by Marie Kondo—you know, the decluttering guru from Japan. Kondo insists that the way to get rid of anything is to hold the object in question up to your cheek. If it still sparks joy, keep it. If it doesn’t, throw it out. I follow her advice to a T and hold each pen next to my cheek to see if it still sparks joy. Guess what?

Now, that was an airline. Back in the 80s, air travel was fun. Flight attendants were friendly, and the bathrooms were big enough to join the mile-high club. I’m not saying I joined the club, but let’s just say no one missed the captain. Or what about my pen from Circuit City? Those were the days. For those of you too young to remember, cars didn’t always come with premium sound systems. You had to buy them at Circuit City and install them on your dashboard.

When you parked your car, you had to pull out the giant brick of a radio and carry it around like a designer handbag. If you dared leave it in the car, someone would steal it, and you’d start the ‘circuit’ all over again. Buy, install, carry like a handbag, stolen.

My favorite pen is the one I stole from Bank of America. You’ve all seen it. It’s long and black and has a shiny gold chain attached as well as a piece of the desk and the teller. I can’t possibly throw that one away. Back into the mug you go. Wait a minute. Is this really happening? Am I turning into my parents? Have I become, dare I say, a hoarder? Well, if holding on to pens (and other things) that spark joy has worked for Mom and Dad, that’s good enough for me. FOSTERING CREATIVITY, INNOVATION, AND INSPIRATION IN CHILDREN

itnessing the growth and development of children is one of the most rewarding experiences for adults. But we often wonder, “How can I encourage creativity, innovation, and inspiration? Are there any resources to foster this?”

Here are three ways I fostered creativity, innovation, and inspiration in my children: 1. Spark imagination, foster emotional intelligence, and nurture a love for reading with Charlotte’s Web. One of our home’s most cherished bedtime stories was Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. This timeless tale of a spider and a pig sparked my children’s imaginations and opened up meaningful conversations about perspective, acceptance, and the beauty of nature. Through the adventures of Wilbur and Charlotte, my children learned to see the world through different lenses, fostering empathy and emotional intelligence. Charlotte’s selfless love and Wilbur’s innocence taught my children the importance of kindness and the value of every living being. This book helped instill a love for reading, which has continued for my daughters, nurturing their intellectual curiosity and emotional depth.

2. Encourage creativity, patience, problemsolving, and perseverance with LEGOs. LEGOs were also a staple in our home, providing endless hours of entertainment and creativity for my children. As they meticulously built intricate structures, they learned the art of patience, sharing, and the joy of seeing their ideas come to life. Constructing with LEGOs nurtured their creativity, innovation, and imagination, laying the foundation for important life skills such as problem-solving and perseverance

3. Inspire through positive role models at every age.

Inspiration is crucial for our children’s growth, and role models play a significant role in providing that spark. When my children were younger, they adored Elmo and the positive messages he conveyed. As they grew older, it became essential to help them find new role models who could inspire them to make a meaningful impact on the world.

By transitioning from childhood role models like Elmo to more complex role models, we encouraged our teens to look up to individuals who have made significant contributions, helping them set higher goals and aspire to make a difference.

The journey of raising children is full of opportunities to inspire creativity, innovation, and a love for learning. Books like Charlotte’s Web, toys like LEGOs, and impactful role models have shaped my children’s development. By sharing these personal experiences, I hope to pass on the joy and benefits of these influences to other adults, helping them to foster a nurturing and inspiring environment for their children. Together, we can cultivate a generation of imaginative, resilient, and compassionate individuals ready to make their mark on the world.

Conversations can be incredibly impactful and provide midlife women with opportunities to feel seen and heard. So, why don’t more of us seek out these empowering conversations?

Conversations with Ageless Women emphasizes the importance and power of the voice of women.

Women’s stories are ageless and our conversations should be as well.

Colleen Rosenblum and Bridgett Garratt are hosts of the Hot Flashes and Cool Topics podcast, the voice for women in midlife and beyond. These ladies have spent the last four years in conversations with medical experts, celebrities, authors, and trailblazing women who are changing the narrative around this unique and wonderful stage of life.

The co-hosts noticed that after their episodes, they received email after email from listeners who felt connected to and emboldened by listening to the guests’ stories. Colleen and Bridgett realized the positive impact these conversations were having on women over 50, and they decided to create events offering in-person experiences. Thus, Conversations with Ageless Women was born.

Companies such as Laura Geller Beauty, HerMD, and Womaness work with the podcasters to create empowering, interactive events. From Nashville to New York City, they have hosted sold-out, live events featuring influential women who share their stories and, more importantly, connect midlife women with one another.

Speakers have included prominent experts, such as Dr. Heather Hirsch and Dr. Somi Javaid, celebrities Melissa Gilbert and Jill Kargman, and trailblazers Laura Geller and Fern Mallis. Attendees have used words like “life-changing” and “magical” to describe their experiences. Colleen and Bridgett also collaborate with additional women’s events to access and share even more insightful conversations.

W

hen life gives you lemons, you make lemonade- and you share it with all who are thirsty. That is exactly what Kimberly Phinney has done. If you read her long list of accolades, which range from being a teacher, professor, published author, creator, mother, mental health advocate, and podcaster to being a guest on Good Morning America, it is hard to imagine that this same lady had been on death’s door for several years, but her inspirational journey back to finding herself has left its mark in the literary world as well as in the creative community she has cultivated.

Kimberly had been living her life in unbearable pain for decades. What started as excruciating menstrual cycles in her teens, slowly started robbing her of the lifestyle she had once known. And to add to her misery, she was told that, like many others suffering from endometriosis, she would not be able to have children. This news, in addition to her physical pain, left Kimberly in a very dark place. With tears in her eyes, she admitted how daunting, suicidal thoughts kept creeping into her mind as the constant physical and emotional pain slowly erased the joy from her life.

She continued to lean into her people: her husband, mom, and best friend. But after ten long years of infertility, literally, a day after she had cried in the shower and renounced all hope, a miracle happened, and a new life had begun, Hadley Rose. To this day, no doctor can explain how this miracle came to be, but it was an answered prayer for the Phinney family.

However, the story does not end there, as endometriosis can be relentless. Kimberly’s pain became a ten on most days, and eventually made it impossible for her to go to work. During the height of Covid, she had her first surgery and was diagnosed

with stage 4 endometriosis. Her ablation surgery’s success was very fleeting, and it led to 3 more surgeries and eventually undetected sepsis. All of this took a tremendous toll on her body, and for four grueling years, she was desperately fighting for her life.

But, as ironic as this may sound, that ‘s when the real magic happened…

“I started to bleed ink, so I wouldn’t bleed out,” she told me. Utilizing her English and creative writing skills, she began to write from her bed, and this became the best therapy of all. She wrote many poems and brainstormed the idea for a website TheWayBack2Ourselves.com, which channels other creatives to work through their struggles by words.

Recently, she eloquently arranged her collection of poems into a top-selling book Of Wings and Dirt, which was inspired by her journey into the struggles of life and death. She vowed that if spared, she would make it her mission to help others, especially women. This is her lemonade.

Kimberly said that we all will be brought to our knees by something, but it is up to us to react and lean into our people and passions to help and impact others.

If you met Kimberly today, you would never guess that she had to relearn how to walk after being in a wheelchair on three separate occasions because these days she is sprinting through life. When asked, she described beauty as “something that is durable and eternal and can’t be taken away. It is our hope, gifts, and service to one another.”

Sometimes it’s in our darkest hours that our lights begin to shine their brightest. Thank you, Kimberly, for being an inspirational beacon.

ee Roscioli, the star of the hit offBroadway parody Titanique, is usually hired to belt and cry. With roles that include the iconic green witch Elphaba in Wicked and real-life diva Cher in The Cher Show, Roscioli is accustomed to leaving it all on the stage.

Now, as an amplified version of Celine Dion in Titanique, Roscioli is taking the opportunity to flex some new muscles.

“The older I get, the more OK I am with a challenge. These moments of uncomfortability are an opportunity to gain a new skill set and see what I can do.”

Titanique reimagines the Oscar-winning blockbuster with a twist - what if Celine Dion, the voice behind the film’s integral love song “My Heart Will Go On,” was on the ship’s fateful maiden voyage? Campy chaos ensues, and it is all set to the score of Celine Dion’s greatest hits.

The musical, co-written by Tye Blue, Marla Mindelle, and Constantine Rousouli, is rooted in comedy. Moments for improv are written into the script —an exciting challenge for Roscioli.

ideas with her castmates when she gets to the theater. It’s a collaborative effort and a sometimes intimidating venture — you don’t know what will land until you put it in front of an audience.

There is massive payoff for the moments that do hit. “The day that Trump was found guilty I worked it into the improv and the audience went absolutely crazy. I ran into the audience and started high-fiving everyone, and then the rest of the cast started high-fiving everyone, too. There was so much collective joy in that moment.”

Performing in a hit musical can be exhilarating, but eight shows a week takes a toll on even the most seasoned performers. In order to stay inspired, Roscioli sprinkles in small creative projects throughout her week — drawing, watercoloring, long walks around New York City. “It’s like cross-training for creativity. I go back to the show more inspired.”

The primary inspiration, of course, is Miss Dion.

“Celine is authentically heartfelt, goofy, and silly,” and, in addition to the improv and onstage hijinks, so is Titanique itself. “You can actually be moved,” Roscioli says. “Her music is that good!”

Big Heart Mehgan Pinigis - The Golden Honey Written by Jordan Peden

Lynchburg, Virginia, has it all.

For a town that’s not particularly well-known, Lynchburg has made a name for itself in just about every arena, from history to outdoor activities, highly-ranked universities, dining, and art. Considered one of America’s best “adventure towns,” Lynchburg is a small yet captivating city of vibrant people and the things they make.

One of those people is Mehgan Pinigis, owner of The Golden Honey, a local Lynchburg boutique specializing in a modern, coastal boho aesthetic for both men and women.

Like many of us, Mehgan found herself in a transitional period of her career at the height of COVID-19. She was working as a General Manager and buyer for a retail franchise when she began laying the foundation for her own boutique, inspired by her mother’s entrepreneurship.

Mehgan crafted the concept for what would become The Golden Honey as a nod to her beloved Golden Retrievers, Ranger and Honey Bee, the shop’s namesake. Guided by the “golden” theme, Mehgan envisioned a space where guests could be transported to the shores 68

of California while maintaining a cozy, modern East Coast living room vibe.

After three years of patiently waiting for the perfect location, Mehgan was able to bring her ideas to fruition. She designed what is now The Golden Honey herself, from the construction to the furniture selection to the carefully curated items in the store. At long last, she opened the doors of The Golden Honey to the Lynchburg community in September of 2023 and launched the online business in November.

Today, The Golden Honey is a favorite shopping destination for local clientele and out-of-town visitors. The timeless designs handpicked by Mehgan reflect her thoughtful approach to retail, putting a “golden” spin on every product line she carries.

Complete with a trucker hat bar, a flower bar, and, soon, a charm bar, The Golden Honey is more than a boutique; it’s an experience.

Guests aren’t just shopping; they get to create something while connecting with Mehgan and her welcoming staff.

Mehgan and The Golden Honey are now part of an extraordinary network of women small business

Timeless BEAUTY I M PACTFU LLY P ER FECT Written by Marianne Pienias

P

ractical equals perfection, and practical is exactly what my mom is. Funny how it annoyed me most of my life- until now. Last March I wrote an article about my dad having a heart attack.

And it is with great sorrow that I write that after suffering for several weeks, my father was laid to rest on May 7th.

My mom, of course, was at his side. They took “until death do us part” to a whole new level: one car, one cell phone, one unit for almost 58 years.

But this article is not about my dad, and it is not sad.

It’s about my mom, and it is about perseverance, love, and appreciation. They say you don’t fully appreciate your mom until you grow up. Well, I feel like I recently grew up because I have just realized how amazing she has been my whole life, for better or worse.

It was not always easy, and my dad was a raging alcoholic for most of my childhood.

But without complaining and with a lot of prayers, my mom managed to keep the faith and stay the course. Remarkably, my dad became sober in 1987, and to everyone’s surprise, except my mother’s, he never drank again.

Our last Christmas together, we went around the table and talked about our childhood Christmases. My husband, with tears in his eyes, said that theirs were always fun until one of his relatives had too much to drink. My mom immediately said how awful that must have been. WHAT?! (refer to paragraph 3). I said, “Excuse me, but aren’t you forgetting my whole childhood?”

Without hesitation, she surprisingly and beautifully answered, “Oh, I try not to remember those things.”

Amazing. I will take some of what she’s having, please!

Fast forward to this year. Weeks after my dad’s passing, she had his clothes packed and donated all of his unused medications and compression tights to a burn unit. Whenever she briefly broke down a little, she immediately apologized saying she didn’t want to be one of those people who carried on and that dying, unfortunately, is a part of life. She frequently reminded me that she was not the only person to ever lose a husband. So, when I went to visit her, we played tennis, pickleball, swam, karaoked, took a dance lesson, and went to church to visit Dad- yes, in one weekend, and it was awesome.

During my visit, we also had a visitor. She was a widow who could not speak about her husband without sobbing. My mom looked at her and said in her nicest, yet sternest, voice, “I miss my husband, too, but nothing is going to bring him back, so every day is a choice.” When the lady left, my mom simply stated, “Sorry, she talks a lot.” I just stared at my mom in amazement, and wondered if I will ever be this brave.

Don’t get me wrong, my mom has had to make some adjustments. She now has to battle the internet puzzle and drive on a highway after being a passenger most of her life. But she does it with the utmost grace. And at 81, she just makes up words and chuckles because no one ever dares to correct her. Last Thanksgiving she called my daughter’s boyfriend a hashtag. She had no clue what a hashtag was, but she felt like using the word, so she did. And that’s what makes her practically perfect and perfectly impactful.
