ASKaND Chair’s Message From SKN!

Good evening Members

I am currently on island, in St. KittsNevis, celebrating my coming of age. With it being time for me to collect my bus pass so to speak! Not a huge fan of buses!

While I am here, I am trying to meet with as many Ministers as possible; to introduce them to the Association and showcase the work we are currently undertaking in England. Along with our future plans and aspirations.

I have received some exciting proposals from a person of influence; however I will wait until the information is confirmed before I reveal the news! It will be good to share this information with members on my return.

Moving on to our ‘Steppers’! (i.e. walkers); they are making great strides towards achieving our target. I would like to see everyone get behind them. Please support them and cheer them on as they cross the finish line. I have managed to get back into a rhythm, and I am making a heroic effort catch up with the team; to show those Doubting Thomas's that I could do it!

With ‘Sponsor a Netball;’ we are backing this initiative to support St Kitts and Nevis with a supply of netballs to enhance the young peoples physical activity and wellbeing in the primary and secondary schools on the islands.

SKN HERITAGE DAY 18/08/2024!

Thank you for your contributions thus far. Netballs can be purchased for an £11.00 donation, and for more information please contact the Secretary at: askand2022@gmail.com.

Once again the Caribbean has been hit with the forces of a hurricane and Hurricane Beryl has taken lives, livelihoods and residences. A lot of nationals have been left homeless. An appeal has gone out via the High Commissioners offices of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. We will make an effort to donate dried goods and tinned items. I have been approached by Aaron Mapp to form an alliance with other Associations in Birmingham to start an appeal and to organise some fundraising activities very soon. I will keep the membership updated every step of the way.

So, as I write this report I am celebrating with my family; as we give God thanks for life. Let us do,

the very best we can do, with an open heart and a grateful and an appreciative spirit. Take care until we meet, remember those who are suffering at home and abroad, not just those badly affected by Hurricane Beryl; but those who are weak, those suffering with their mental health, the child/children left without a parent or parents, the hungry, the homeless, those with addictions to drug and alcohol trying to fight their way out. Give them the strength and support they need. To those, living in Temporary Accommodation due to no fault of their own, especially the children. Lord; that pains me. To those who are bereaved and don’t know how they are going to cope with their loss. I am asking God to help them hold on to his undying love and to wrap them in his comfort blanket.

Amen and Amen!

Warm regards

Celebrate Windrush Gen with “SHIP AWAY”

Prepare to embark on an exciting adventure with "Ship Away," an innovative new board game that brings the historic journey of the Windrush generation to life. "Ship Away" promises a blend of fast-paced fun and educational trivia, offering players of all ages an engaging way to learn about this pivotal period in our UK history.

Inspired by beloved classics like Ludo and Snakes and Ladders, "Ship Away" is designed for simplicity, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The game’s title evokes the poignant image of a ship departing from the Caribbean, filled with people seeking new opportunities in Britain, known affectionately as the ‘Mother Country’.

The game is vibrant with captivating images and narratives of notable figures from the Windrush generation, including:

• Evelyn Wauchope: Recognised for her daring feat of stowing away aboard the Empire Windrush from Kingston Harbour in Jamaica.

• Euton Christian: A versatile individual who served in the Royal Air Force, excelled as a cricketer, and a founding member of the Manchester Council for Community Relations, advocating for racial equality.

• Mona Baptiste: A Trinidadian who rose to fame as a singer and entertainer in the UK, sharing stages with icons like Tony Hancock.

• Sam King: The first Black Mayor of the London Borough of Southwark and a co-founder of the Windrush Foundation in 1995, leaving a lasting legacy on British society.

The game also invites player to commemorate Windrush Day, observed annually on 22nd June, by engaging in spirited gameplay with friends and family. This special day is perfect for reflecting on the contributions and experiences of the Windrush generation.

The creation of "Ship Away" was made possible through the dedication and vision of Patricia Jones, who coincidentally was born on 22nd June, Windrush Day. Integral contributors include Max Parsons and Reza, the talented designers behind the game’s engaging mechanics and vibrant graphics. Shaun Wallace from the popular TV show "The Chase" provided his expertise as the ship quiz master, crafting challenging trivia questions. The historical accuracy and authenticity of the game were ensured by Arthur Torrington of the Windrush Foundation.

Therefore, we are thrilled to announce that on Sunday 18th August, at the St Kitts & Nevis Heritage Day, you will have the opportunity to meet Max Parsons, one of the game’s developers, in our Games tent. He will be there to share in the excitement and play "Ship Away" with you. Don’t miss this opportunity to dive into history, have fun, and be part of a day filled with learning, and community spirit.

Brum to SKN Challenge Update

Most adults in the UK will struggle to remember a June when the weather has been more miserable! In the press, they even started calling it ‘June-uary’, as it has been so far from what we might come to expect for this time of year.

The weather, therefore, has been the most significant factor affecting our step count last month. It was difficult to get out as it was so cold and wet. This is not to make excuses; we all know that we could have done more but, there is a world of difference between walking on a bright, summer’s day and a grey, showery one!

Nevertheless, our dedicated walkers have kept going, and we were blessed with a few days in June where we briefly got the impression that summer had arrived!

Our new 'stars' have continued to surge ahead leaving the rest of us chomping at their heels! It is accepted that our steppers figures are a little lower this year; but we have not stopped. We will not stop until with get to St Kitts & Nevis!
