St Kitts & Nevis Heritage Day Returns!
Community excitement builds as preparations begin for the cultural event of the summer!
The vibrant sounds of St Kitts & Nevis rhythms will once again fill the air this August as we announce its highly anticipated Heritage Day 2025. Set for Sunday, 17th August, this celebration promises to be the most expansive yet, bringing together over 2,500 attendees from across the West Midlands and beyond.

and health initiatives designed to strengthen community bonds.
"There's something magical about Heritage Day," shares Jacqui Daniels, ASKaND Chair. "It's where our elders' stories meet our children's futures, where traditions are passed down through food, music, and shared experiences. The joy we see in our community as we prepare is simply incredible."
Following the resounding success of previous events, which attracted a combined 3,500 attendees in 2023 and 2024, this year's celebration aims to further cement the cultural legacy of the twin islands in Birmingham's diverse landscape. The day-long festival will feature traditional masquerade performances, domino tournaments, ancestry workshops, Caribbean cuisine,
For many community members, the event represents more than entertainment. It is a vital connection to heritage and identity. "My parents came to Birmingham during the Windrush era," explains Everton Merchant, an ASKaND member. "Heritage Day helps me to understand their journey and celebrate where I come from. I encourage my children to come along each year so they too can feel that same connection."
We at ASKaND, are now calling for volunteers to help make this cultural showcase possible. "This year, we will need over 40 individuals to join our team," says Volunteer Coordinator Renelia Queely. "Whether you have two
hours or the full day, whether you are interested in event planning, public relations, or simply welcoming guests, we have a role for you."
At ASKaND we emphasise that volunteering offers more than community service; it provides valuable skills development in leadership, event management, and cultural preservation. Training sessions will begin in June, giving volunteers ample time to prepare.
Those interested in supporting this celebration of St Kitts and Nevis heritage can sign up through the ASKaND WhatsApp Community or respond to the email we will sending out to all our members.
As anticipation builds, one thing remains clear: Heritage Day continues to stand as a powerful testament to Birmingham's multicultural spirit and the enduring legacy of the Kittitian and Nevisian diaspora.

ASKaND’s Own Health & Wellbeing Champion!
e are delighted to announce that our very own Health and Wellbeing Officer, Cherelle Gardiner; is the recipient of the Empowerment Award for Health & Wellbeing Champion of the Year 2025. Cherelle will tell us what winning this award means to her.

“I am deeply honoured to receive the Empowerment Award for Health & Wellbeing Champion of the Year 2025, a recognition that marks a significant milestone in my journey. This award is not just a personal achievement; it is a testament to the years of dedication, passion, and impact I have poured into the health and well-being sector. It represents the collective efforts of so many individuals and communities striving for healthier, more empowered lives.”
A Journey Rooted in Purpose

“For over a decade, health and well-being have been more than just areas of interest they have been my life’s mission. Through my work as an Approved Mental Health First Aid Instructor, Holistic Health Practitioner, NLP Life Coach, Finwell Financial Wellbeing Champion Instructor, and ASKaND Health & Wellbeing Officer, I have committed myself to educating, supporting, and advocating for individuals to take charge of their well-being in every aspect of life, mentally, physically, financially, and emotionally. This journey has been shaped by my own lived experiences, including what it means to live with MS. It has fuelled my passion to break the stigma surrounding physical and mental health, to ensure no one feels alone. Over the years, I have trained thousands of individuals in mental health first aid, and coaching several people towards transformational mindsets, helping them build resilience in their careers, relationships, finances, and overall well-being. Seeing individuals shift their perspectives, overcome obstacles, and step into their full potential has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.”
Why This Award Matters
“This recognition is not just about me, it is a symbol of the impact we are making together in the health and well-being sector. It represents:
• Greater Awareness & Advocacy – Elevating mental, physical, and financial well-being in everyday conversations.
• Expanded Opportunities – Creating new platforms to reach more people, collaborate with organisations, and develop meaningful initiatives.
• A Movement for Change – Acknowledging and
empowering individuals who are committed to ensuring that well-being is a priority in all spaces.
Being nominated and becoming a finalist reinforced my "why" the deep purpose that drives me forward, even in challenging times. Despite 2024 being a tough year, I held onto that purpose, knowing that real change happens when we refuse to give up.”
A Moment of Gratitude
“I want to extend my deepest appreciation to Terri Louise, CEO of Talks with MS, for establishing the Empowerment Awards a platform that in my opinion ensures individuals like myself, and so many others, are seen, heard, and celebrated. Representation matters, and this award serves as a reminder that our voices have power, our stories hold meaning, and our work is making a real difference. To everyone who nominated and voted for me; thank you. Your support and belief in the work I do means more than words can express. While I couldn’t accept this award in person due to a much-needed health and well-being break that I had in St. Kitts, I was grateful to share my gratitude through an acceptance video. That break was a reminder of the very message I advocate; self-care, rest, and balance are not luxuries, but necessities.”
Honouring My Family My Pillars of Strength
“Through every challenge, every milestone, and every success, my family has been my unwavering foundation. Their endless love, support, and encouragement have carried me through this journey, pushing me forward when times were tough and celebrating each victory along the way. I am deeply grateful for their belief in me; it has been the wind beneath my wings, allowing me to continue striving for change and making an impact.
At the heart of my journey is my mum my “Kittitian Queen,” whose love and wisdom shaped the person I am today. She always reminded me to never dim my light, to use my voice, and to make a difference in the world. Losing my mum unexpectedly in 2024 was an unimaginable loss, but her strength, resilience, and unconditional love continue to guide me every single day. This award is not just mine I share it with my mum too. Every step I take in this journey reflects the values she instilled in me, and I will continue to honour her legacy by advocating for health, well-being, and empowerment for all.”

To everyone who has supported me along this journey; thank you. This is only the beginning. Together, we will continue driving change, breaking down barriers, and ensuring that well-being is prioritised for all. Here’s to a future where health, well-being, and empowerment are at the heart of everything we do.”
