What was your Most memorable vacation? I went to Disney World around Halloween, which combined all my favorite things!

Get to know the NDoA:
Piper Blackburn
What was your School/Chapter/Major? Bachelor's degrees in Civil Engineering from University of Kansas, Kappa Chapter - Alpha Class. Part of the Canis Major line, which at the time had the most people - ceremony pictures were always an ordeal. I received my Master?s in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering from Colorado State University.
Where are you now? I?m a structural engineer for Kiewit. I?m working in their permanent design group specializing in bridge design in Denver (Lone Tree), Colorado. Currently, I?m working on a project in Las Vegas that is set to break ground January 2023.
What got you interested in your career? I?ve always liked a challenge and from a young age mathematics provided challenge and stimulation; it didn?t hurt that I was good at it too. In 8th grade, when I started to be pushed to think about careers, I knew that, while I loved mathematics, I would want to do something tangible. In one of my classes we watched ?Time for School?, a documentary series which followed 7 kids around the world as they progressed through primary and secondary education. One of the biggest things that struck me was how hard it was to get to school physically; the lack of basic infrastructure?roads and bridges?was a barrier for many of the students. At the point I learned what an engineer was and the power they have in shaping the world.
What are you a fan of? I?m a big soccer fan. I played growing up and, when I can, in pick up games with coworkers. I also love to watch the beautiful game. The teams I follow are Liverpool, KCCurrent, Rapids and Los Pumas. You can catch me most Saturday mornings watching Premier League and Saturday nights watching Liga MX.
What's the best advice you ever received? It was something along the lines of: ?Are you asking for my opinion because you don?t know what to do, or are you asking to justify what you want to do?? A lot of people, especially those socialized as women during adolescence, struggle with taking up space and making decisions/taking ownership because of desire. Everything needs to be reasoned and justified or you?re at risk of ?being emotional?. This advice helped me in the moment but also grounded me in the idea that I can do things without defense.
Can you share a favorite ??? memory? My favorite ??? memory would have to be the creation of bug-friend. I was putting together the agenda for our Chapter meeting and it was risk management night?arguably the most boring Chapter of the semester. I was trying to figure out how to make it more engaging and I saw out of the corner of my eye this crazy bug hat my Dad had sent me for Halloween the year before. So, I brought it to Chapter and bug-friend was born: calling on folks to share fun facts about themselves or different stretches for the group to do in order to get them out of their seats and even jumping on tables leading choruses of ?we don?t haze?.
What is ???'s biggest challenge? Growing sustainably is a huge challenge for our organization. We?re at a point of needing to refine standard practices to achieve the future that so many desire. The growth we are seeing in overall membership and type of Members is fantastic. To continue down this path, some hard choices have to be made. How does it feel to be the last person to hold the title of NDoA? I?m pretty excited about it! Having an Executive Director position offers a lot to our organization that was lacking with the NDoA role. It?s unusual to know you?re living in the ?good ?ole days?while they are still ongoing. The thing I?m trying to do the most as the last NDoA is make sure that the transition to the new National Board structure is as seamless as possible, and that in the near future people will forget exactly what year the transition occurred.
The Inside L? p
Royal Blue or Silver? Silver
Do you know your Hogwarts House and, if so, what is it? Ravenclaw
What is your Favorite branch of science? Does engineering count? If not, physics, specifically kinematics, magnetism is so far over my head.
What was your First job? I started babysitting when I was 12 (11?) but the first job which gave me a paycheck was being a lifeguard in high school. The first job I got ?using my degree?was as Project Engineer intern for McCownGordon the summer after my junior year.
Favorite season? Fall. More accurately when the aspens change colors, it can be argued that this starts in the summer. Who is your Woman in STEM icon (living or dead)? Current: Emily Roebling, chief engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge. Semantics might say that her husband was, but when you?re running the job and calling the shots who cares about semantics.
Original: Jane Goodall, I wanted to work with animals when I was little. Granted, the animals I wanted to work with were sharks, but she was still an inspiration.
Honorable mention: Marie Curie a Nobel Prize winner in physics and chemistry and a supportive spouse?! What a dream.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Right where I?m at ? Denver, CO! But I?d love a house with a yard for veggies and a dog.
What might someone be surprised to know about you? I took Italian for 7 years growing up! At one point I would have called myself fluent, but years without practice have left me rusty.
What was your most memorable vacation? My favorite trip I?ve taken was a service and backpacking trip to Peru. It was absolutely life changing and beyond memorable. But when I think vacation I think pure joy and relaxing, so that would have to be Kauai, aloha ??ina!
What is your Favorite book? I love to read; so, on any given day, it's any given book. But always in my top five favorite books is Alicein Wonderland? I have 3 different copies.
When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried? During a painting night with friends, can?t remember what we were talking about just that it hurt to breathe and my mascara was running. XD
What one superpower would you want? I think being able to heat things up or cool things with touch would be great, nothing worse than tea that?s the improper temperature.
If you could only have one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? One food would be potatoes, but one type of food would be Mexican.

(And that's just to name a few.)
Active and Alumnae Members who wish to contribute to ??? can volunteer for one (or more!) of these committees. If you are interested in helping out, visit https://ask-wits.com/chairs-committees/ to see the full list of committees, their current goals and Committee Chair contact info. Or check out our calendar below to find a meeting time that fits with your schedule!
Website Committee
This past year the Website Committee worked to get our newest Members access to the National website. With this, they hope to continue to expand the website to be a source of truth, for Members and non-members alike to easily find resources and communication from the National Organization. In the future, they see the website as a place that our Members can go to find ways to come together, whether that be through events shared on the site or connecting through the Membership Database.

It'sbeenalmostayear
since the Rho Chapter of Alpha Sigma Kappa wasinstalled at the University of South Florida in Tampa. According to Grace Thompson, current President, the year has been exhilarating and full of many fun moments. Grace says that they ?have worked hard to produce quality events that our Members can be excited about and to create bonding opportunities for our Members to create deep and meaningful bonds.? Her personal favorite event from the past year was their spring sisterhood retreat in Orlando. They spent time at the pool, played board games, had movie marathons, made powerpoints, and overall bonded as a Sisterhood!
Their goal as a chapter has been to ?create an environment where each Member is valued for who they are as a human being? and Grace feels that they have succeeded in doing so. This welcoming attitude has attracted many Members within the past year, including 15 new Candidatesthis fall, which will add to their current group of 31 Members. To welcome these new Members in, the Rho Chapter has plans to hold their first fall formal and continue their philanthropy efforts with their second annual Seek and Search event.
As a newly installed chapter, Grace hasseen firsthand the experience of starting a new chapter of Alpha Sigma Kappa. Her greatest piece of advice for interest and petitioning groups is to openly communicate with Nationals. Grace explains that ?It can be overwhelming at times to make sure all deadlines are met and all policies are followed but LC?s and the National Board are always there to help you navigate. Also, make sure that your Executive Board and Members are well versed on bylawsand policiesas that is such an important part of being a chapter!?
Congratulationsto the Rho Chapter on almost a year of being a part of Alpha Sigma Kappa!
