Year End Message from ASIS PDC Chair, Shelly Kozacek Hello fellow PDC members!

A huge thank you to the members of the community and the steering committee for their dedication and assistance throughout the year.

Steering committee members have led initiatives that have created increased mentorship opportunities and connections, newsletters, continuous education and webinars, and teaming with Career HQ on future developments.

It has been an exciting year and 2024 will continue to bring the community additional professional development opportunities.

Announcement of Professional Development Community Steering Committee Members for 2024

Our selection committee has been busy evaluating all of the applications for the Professional Development Steering Committee over the last few weeks.

The steering committee had many discussions in who should be on the SteerCo. We are happy to welcome and look forward to working with all of the members: Mia Korhonen, Juan Antonio Bernal, Nicholas Koziara, Patricia Coureas Oswald Smiley.

Mentorship Community On November 8, 2023, the Mentorship Community held their last mentor meet up for 2023. The topic included how to apply Situational Leadership styles for successful mentoring engagements.

After a brief update on what Situational Leadership is and how it works, we have seasoned mentors talk about what makes their engagements so successful.

At GSX in September the Mentorship community held their second Speed Mentoring Session and it was a success. There were actually more mentees eager to meet up with seasoned mentors. Everyone had a chance to interact, because speed mentoring involves short five minute meet ups to get acquainted with the vast number of mentoring topics and expertise available.

ASIS Professional Development Community: Q3 2023 Webinar

On September 05th, 2023, ASIS International Professional Development Community (PDC) conducted its Q3 webinar, and the topic was “Maximizing Connections for Professional Success”.

Our keynote speaker was Ashley Glinka, co-owner at “Critical Threat LLC”. Mrs. Glinka is a subject matter expert in terrorism, behavioral detection, and situational intelligence.

During her presentation, the speaker emphasized that networking has become an essential tool for security professionals in our interconnected world. Effective networking can help security professionals establish meaningful connections, foster collaborations, and advance their careers in the industry. This presentation offered several key takeaways that would empower colleagues to maximize security networking opportunities, namely: • Building a strong professional network is crucial for success in the security industry.

• Preparation is key: research attendees, know your goals, craft an effective elevator pitch, and prepare thought-provoking questions.

• Networking is continuous: follow up, join professional communities, and evaluate and improve your networking efforts.

Since this webinar took place a few days before the biggest security industry event of the year – GSX 2023, the speaker shared best practices to tailor a pitch to the audience and the goals the attendees have for the forum in Dallas, TX. Ashley focused on key Pre-GSX, During-GSX, and PostGSX communication and networking items, suggesting using GSX as a starting point for further discussions and relationship-building.

In 2023, we have successfully completed a number of events, among which: Q1 webinar - 03/01/2023: "ESRM and Security Cultures - Leadership and Business Growth".

Our keynote speakers were Jon Harris and John Rodriquez. Q2 webinar - 06/07/2023: "Strategic Paths Forward - Career Transition and Risk Management". Our keynote speakers were Melissa Mack and Yacine Benamane. Q3 webinar - 09/05/2023: "Maximizing Connections for Professional Success". Our keynote speaker was Ashley Glinka. Q4 webinar - scheduled for 12/06/2023: "The Path to Successful ASIS Certifications". Our keynote speakers will be Meshal Aljohani and Jakson Phillips. We are looking now for volunteers to become keynote speakers at PDC quarterly webinars in 2024. Please be kindly advised that serving as a keynote speaker at ASIS PDC webinars you may claim up to 4.5 CPEs for the topic you present, in addition to promoting your visibility among the security networks.
