“I cherish my ASIJ experience, the alumni community, and growing up in Japan. I learned empathy, respecting differences, and the value of understanding multiple perspectives. My third culture identity is something I am proud of. I would be a different person had it not been for ASIJ.”

A LESSON IN GIVING

ASIJ relies upon the generous financial support of our alumni and their families, parents, employees, and friends. There are many ways to make a gift to help ASIJ. All donations regardless of the amount make a positive impact and demonstrate your belief in our mission.

Meeting the moment for immediate impact

The ASIJ Annual Fund is a fundraising priority for the school. It runs from July 1 through June 30 and raises millions of yen each year toward the operating budget. The ASIJ Annual Fund helps to meet the moment and support immediate priorities to make a difference where it is needed most, ensuring flexibility, stability, and excellence throughout the year.

Creating a permanent, sustainable source of funding

ASIJ’s permanently restricted endowment was established and invested in 2022. The expendable income is allocated at the discretion of the Board of Directors for projects and programs of the greatest priority at ASIJ. Each contribution increases the value of ASIJ’s total endowment and can be designated to support areas aligned with donors’ interests and the school’s mission. ASIJ’s endowment is a sustainable funding source that gives the school confidence to grow as strategic developments and initiatives change.

Leaving a legacy

Planning a bequest allows donors to arrange a gift now to be allocated in the future through a will or trust. There are several ways to define the amount of charitable gifts left in estate plans. Donors are recognized through membership in ASIJ’s Gate Society.

Academic Excellence

The ASIJ Annual Fund builds upon a legacy of academic excellence. Giving allows the school to say yes to our faculty, to empower exceptional teaching and inspire students to be prepared to thrive and lead in a dynamic world.

ASIJ’s Design program offers opportunities to elementary, middle, and high school students to build their capacity for creative problem solving. High school teacher Linus Velez teaches two advanced courses — Data Science, a 5000-level course, and Advanced Topics in Computer Science, a 6000-level course — that empower students through student-led learning. In both classes, students can set their own goals and milestones to explore topics that align with their personal interests and career aspirations. For example, Linus said, a student might “know they want to go into something finance-related, and they think having an understanding of data science is something that is going to help them to be better at finance. Or one of the students last year [knew he would go] into sports science and he generally looked at data related to health and nutrition.”

Other student projects from the 2024-25 year included a desktop Tamagotchi-like pet, a webscraper that advised on when to buy or sell stocks, a gesture-controlled computer navigation system, and the release of a video game made on the Unity game engine.

Both coding and the ability to make sense of data are skills our students will find valuable in their futures. Linus underscored that understanding data is applicable in all industries. “Data science is something that will help you to, at the very least, interpret things, and at the upper most level, be able to create your own models or things that will help you make better decisions.”

Whether they are coding AI opponents in a

Our faculty’s lessons are augmented by their partnerships with experts from around the world. The special guests and world-class speakers who visited in 2024-25 numbered well into the dozens. Among them was esteemed composer and choral educator Dr Rollo Dilworth, who worked with students in elementary, middle, and high school on one of his compositions, culminating in a campuswide performance. Dr Dilworth also presented about African American spirituals, and spoke with music faculty about the powerful role music plays in holistic development and lifelong learning.

Rakugo Master Ryutei Saryuu-shishou visited campus to teach our advanced Japanese students. While students were learning how to master non-verbal communication, Saryuu-shishou demonstrated shosa (gestures and movements) and provided feedback on the students’ kobashi

(short story) practice. Saryuu-shishou also performed an authentic Rakugo piece titled Choutan (“Long and Short”), humorously portraying a conversation between two characters with opposite personalities. Students sat captivated by his performance, which indeed was a master class on the impact of facial expressions, gestures, and movement.

Towards the end of the school year, second graders capped off their study of pollinators with a visit from experts from the Ginza Honey Bee Project, an urban beekeeping initiative launched in 2006. Students learned about the many ways bees impact our lives. The Project produces an astounding one to two tons of honey annually, and students got a delicious taste of different honeys from spring, early summer, and summer — what a sweet ending.

ASIJ’s commitment to excellence begins with our faculty. Beyond competitive compensation, we attract and retain educators who are passionate about teaching, excited to Know, Value, Care for every student, and are deeply committed to our innovative educational approach.

Beyond the Classroom

When you give to the ASIJ Annual Fund, your support enriches co-curricular programs in the arts, music, Japanese culture, and athletics. Giving students diverse opportunities to explore their passions and abilities allows them to develop deeper senses of belonging with others with similar interests.

“Your friend group might not be interested as much in the same hobbies — for me, that’s musical theater — but if you go to after school co-curriculars, like the musical, you find other people who have as much interest as you, which makes a whole new family, which helps you feel more proud about you and your identity.”

The Varsity Baseball team brought home the ISB Spring Invitational championship.
Elementary School students brought the Munchkin Mediation musical to life in the ASIJ Theater.

High School Girls’ varsity team volleyball won the annual YUJO tournament.

Her Imperial Highness Princess Akiko of the Mikasa family presented ASIJ’s Kyogen Club with the Future Award from the Classical Japanese Culture Foundation Awards Committee.

ASIJ hosted the annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference, welcoming students from over ten schools.

teams place in the semi finals at the Japan National Championships and sent a team to the world championships.

The High School Dance Team won gold at the Kanto Plain Dance Festival Showcase Adjudication.

Middle School Girls’ soccer won their league tournament, marking the eighth consecutive league title.

STUDENT SUCCESS and GLOBAL CITIZENS

ASIJ is where every student is known, valued, and cared for; your gifts help to nurture programs that build belonging.

Our teachers live the ethos of our commitment Know, Value, Care: exploring identity, understanding and valuing uniqueness, and engendering mutual respect. As our teachers model these practices, our students are more engaged: taking healthy intellectual risks, feeling like they belong, and showing care for their communities.

At ASIJ’s Early Learning Center, teachers develop relationships with our youngest learners, who are often entirely new to a school setting and learning to understand the role they play in that community.

“We spend the first few months getting to know each other and helping children to have a strong sense of belonging to their classroom community. When children feel that they are seen, valued, and cared for by their teachers they are able to develop a positive sense of self. They feel capable, which gives them the confidence to explore the world and try new things. Knowing that they are loved by their teachers nurtures brain development and impacts their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being.”

Our student ambassador program, designed to create community in elementary, middle, and high school, has grown over the past several years.

Nearly 100 student ambassadors across three divisions meet regularly to brainstorm and execute community builders and reflect on their own development. A highlight for students is the divisional crossover work, when high school ambassadors will speak to the middle school ambassadors about dealing with the social issues, and how they can be part of a positive change. In turn, middle school ambassadors help fifth graders navigate the transition to middle school. These activities not only empower students to grow their own skills as leaders, they also grow the culture of empathy at school.

“At the start, when I first joined Student Ambassadors, I [could get] really embarrassed. I didn’t have the skills I do today. A lot of my skills have changed, like encouraging myself to push on even when things change.”

GLOBAL CITIZENS GLOBAL CITIZENS

Our student community comprises learners with whom our mission and values resonate – students from diverse backgrounds who have a changemaker mindset and are curious about the role they play in our world.

ASIJ is an independent school, serving children of international families, including expatriates on temporary assignments and those who call Tokyo their permanent home. All of our students enrich our classrooms and offer perspectives to those they learn from and learn with.

LOOKING AHead

I’m incredibly proud to be Head of School at The American School in Japan and to have joined such a strong community and a school ready to build on the legacy of over 120 years of excellence with exciting aspirations for the future. The vision laid out over the last few years is bold and challenges us to imagine the future educational needs of students and the need to adapt to the ways AI and global events will continue to impact our students. We also face the more immediate challenge of how to best reimagine an aging infrastructure. For us to be successful in realizing our vision, the work ahead needs to be a joint venture with our community through philanthropy and volunteerism. From the meetings that I have already had with alumni, parents, and donors, it is clear to me that we have a community committed to investing in the long-term success of our school.

I extend my sincere gratitude to the ASIJ community. The conversations I have had with so many of you have been inspiring, and I am grateful for the feedback you have shared. I look forward to working in partnership with you as ASIJ continues to lead with strength to boldly imagine the future of education.

The American School in Japan is formed as a hojin (incorporated educational institution) under Japan’s Private School Law, and is a non-profit, tax-exempt entity. The School’s primary governance documents are its Act of Endowment and Bylaws, which establish a multi-tiered governance structure involving a Board of Directors, a Board of Trustees, and two independent Statutory Auditors. While the Board of Directors meets regularly, the majority of its work is carried out by its seven committees, one of which is the Advancement Committee.

We thank all of our volunteers, including the Alumni Council Giving Committee, the PTA Annual Fund Committee, and the Advancement Committee for their leadership to uphold ASIJ’s mission and values.
