The Impact of Giving
This report highlights the generosity of nearly 1,000 people whose gifts and commitment to The American School in Japan are powerful and empowering. We are grateful for the generously shared time, expertise, Mustang spirit, and philanthropy of our community.
In line with our commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, we have published this report online. To view the digital version, including donor lists, please scan this QR code: 2
In the spring of 2024, the Class of 2031, then in fifth grade, collaborated with each other, ES music teachers Kelly Wormann and Jody Fuller (FF ’93 – ’24), and ASIJ alumna musician Kathryn Claire ’97 to write a new school song that captured ASIJ’s spirit and the energy of our community.
The power of the black & gold
The song’s lyrics tell the story of the ASIJ community so well, and throughout this document you will see some of their words as well as references to “power” – that is the “power of the Black and Gold” that is present in every learning experience and Mustang bond.
Once a Mustang, always a Mustang. Mustang pride cannot be denied!
With Mustangs living in nearly 80 countries, Mustang spirit emanates from every corner of the globe. Thank you to the members of our community who let their power of the black and gold shine from the US to Japan and beyond.
832 donors
to ASIJ, including current and past parents, current and past faculty and staff, alumni, and friends, generously gave to ASIJ, powering our school and showing their confidence in our mission.
130 alumni
class agents, regional volunteers, and committee members planned milestone reunions and regional bōnenkai, shinnenkai, and other gatherings, and kept their classmates connected to ASIJ and to each other.
12 initiatives
which are student-led, teacher-directed were awarded grants through the annual PTA board grants program. This is a partnership between ASIJ and the PTA that helps move forward our community through your investments. Here is a look at a few of the projects from this past academic year:
• Expanding the Early Learning Center (ELC) composting program and supporting nursery students’ capacity to be changemakers.
• Funding artists for the elementary school Animation Club to conduct workshops and engage in hands-on activities with our students.
• Enabling the middle school Fighting for Futures Club to create a rooftop garden and green space to promote a positive and inclusive environment for students.
• Improve ASIJ TV equipment for the high school ASIJ TV Club to enhance ASIJ student stories through livestream, reels, and documentaries.
1,000 PTA volunteers gave their time and expertise to numerous programs and celebrations across our campuses—and beyond, as parent-led clubs attracted membership and camaraderie across the Tokyo area.
ASIJ’s
rice thresher operates at rotations per minute, producing about watts of power.
Every spring, students in kindergarten, fourth grade, and fifth grade work together with their teachers, the Japan Center, and ASIJ’s farmer partner, Otsuji-san, to plant the rice field. In the fall, the new classes of kindergarten and fifth grade see the rice grow, visit the Design Lab to solve the problem of birds eating the rice, and harvest and thresh the rice. This type of cross-curricular learning gives students varied perspectives to form a more complete view, and offers opportunities for them to learn in different ways.
Mochitsuki, the traditional Japanese New Year event of pounding rice to make mochi, was once again eagerly anticipated at the ELC this year. Our youngest learners invited parents to join in the fun as they donned happi coats and hachimaki, engaging in a very hands-on learning experience. Teacher Hisako, who taught at the ELC for over 20 years, returned again to host this special cultural event. What a joyful way for generations of ASIJ students to celebrate Japanese traditions and holidays!
The drumming of traditional Japanese taiko reverberated across campus on Children’s Day, as the elementary school enjoyed performances, sang the Koi Nobori song, and learned about the history of this Japanese holiday. Taiko is also a very popular after-school activity, led by the indefatigable Moko Igarashi, who has taught ASIJ students for decades.
The pit orchestra
swelled to 105 decibels at crescendos in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella: Enchanted Edition, the high school spring musical.
An orchestra of 19 students spent hours underneath the stage (in the “pit”) with conductor Sierra Schwartz, middle and high school music teacher. Persevering through innumerable tempo changes and quick page turns, the students’ positivity and resilience led to magical performances. With another 40 students in the cast and crew, this collaboration to portray a timeless story of “impossible things [that] are happening every day” was a fitting way to end a school year made vibrant by performing and visual arts.
Program highlights include:
• The fifth-grade’s original composition in partnership with Kathryn Claire ’97 (see notes on the inside covers of this document!)
• Kathryn Claire also visited the ELC as one of several visiting performers for music and movement classes, and led a family sing-along.
• A drama workshop and talk-back for middle school and high school students led by Linda Purl ’73 and Patrick Duffy.
• Record-breaking ticket sales for the middle school musical production of Seussical Jr. and sold-out shows of the elementary school’s The Tale of the Chinese Zodiac
• A new faculty and staff community choir, led by middle and high school choir teacher Naarah Callender, which grew the choir concert’s finale to 150 singing students, faculty, and staff.
What we have to figure out together is what makes a story so powerful that it sticks with your audience long after they read it.
This is just one of the prompts that Anjali Nirmalan, high school English teacher, explores with the students enrolled in her creative nonfiction course. This course is one of several at ASIJ created in partnership with Syracuse University through their Project Advance (SUPA) program, and, as such, it allows students to enroll for university credit.
This year was Anjali’s second in teaching the SUPA creative nonfiction course, and the first in which the course culminated in the publication of an anthology. Earlier in the year, students read and discussed a variety of creative nonfiction texts, using them as springboards to write their own essays and narratives. As they neared the class’s publishing unit, students voted to center their writing around the provocation of “seishun,” a Japanese term that means “blue spring”, encapsulating the feelings of youth. Students formed groups to execute the editing of, layout for, and marketing of the anthology, which ultimately featured the work of 44 student authors.
An astounding 100+ students signed up to take SUPA Creative Nonfiction in the 2024-25 school year, surely inspired by the upperclassmen authors who came before them.
A soccer ball travels across the high school field at 64 km/h (40mph)
The 2023-24 school year was a winning one for our varsity teams, with the boys’ and girls’ teams winning the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup and Far East Girls Division I Soccer Tournament, respectively. On and off the field, athletes built a community, and deep pride for that community, exemplifying our core competencies and acting as role models for other students. These teams are just two of 170 co-curriculars in which students can participate, compete, create, and grow. We are fortunate to have faculty, staff, and partners who Know, Value, and Care for students as they explore their passions and abilities.
ASIJ’s active spaces, including two fields, three gyms, tennis and basketball courts, a dance studio, fitness center, wrestling/gymnastics room, and 25-meter pool, are filled every day with students’ energy. Whether it’s recess, a PE unit, or a formal team, students develop skills, gain confidence, and work with teammates and friends in collaborative and independent activities. These spaces are the settings of some favorite memories for alumni, too, who speak fondly of team practices and inspirational coaches and check the longstanding records on visits back to campus.
240 pairs of sneakers can walk 144,000 kilometers.
Middle School’s Global Issues Network (GIN), an international network of student changemakers, held a shoe drive in partnership with Sneaker Kids Tokyo. The drive collected 240 pairs of gently worn or new sneakers for an under-resourced community in the Philippines, including four boxes of shoes collected from ELC families.
As students are thinking about needs off campus and internationally, they also consider how to be good community members. “Students are learning to identify community needs, rather than assuming they know,” explained Director of Service Learning Kat Baker. This approach empowers students to lead initiatives by engaging with school leaders who manage various systems and processes. Through discussions within their classes or grades, they collaboratively explore how they can contribute effectively. Kat shared that understanding the “why” behind their service takes time. “But once students grasp the meaning of the action and its ripple effects, they start a wave of excitement that energizes their classmates, too.” This realization fosters a sense of responsibility and cultivates a spirit of enthusiasm that spreads throughout the school community.
Our Faculty
Adam Carlson, high school PE teacher, was chosen as the faculty speaker for the Class of 2024’s graduation. In his speech, he urged the Class of 2024 to practice the concepts of the power of discomfort and the strength of community.
As he detailed the triumphs and trials of the first class since the COVID-19 pandemic started to have a “normal” senior year, Adam reminded our newest alumni that growth always follows discomfort. Equally important to growth, he continued, is community. “Cultivate the communities that uplift, inspire and empower you and others to achieve new heights. Practice discomfort and practice community.”

Contributions to the endowment give the school flexibility and confidence to grow and improve as strategic developments and initiatives change to reflect the world in which ASIJ is Shaping Tomorrow’s Leaders Today. Total ASIJ Annual Fund: ¥150,455,675
ASIJ’s permanently restricted endowment was established in 2022. The expendable income is allocated at the discretion of the Board of Directors for projects and programs of the greatest priority aligned with the mission of ASIJ.
Student Demographics
Our student community comprises learners with whom our mission and values resonate – students from diverse backgrounds who have a changemaker mindset and are curious about the role they play in our world.
ASIJ is an independent school, catering to children of international families, including expatriates on temporary assignments and those who call Tokyo their permanent home. All of our students enrich our classrooms and offer perspectives to those they learn from and learn with.
No matter where we come from, we’re community.
