Inaugurated in 2007, the Asian Film Awards (AFA) celebrates excellence in Asian cinema through the annual presentation of awards to Asian films and talents. Past awards presentations have been held in Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR. This year, the 14th Asian Film Awards (AFA14) will be held for the first time in Busan, South Korea. We have a total of 39 films, from 15 countries and regions, nominated for 16 awards. Although we are facing unprecedented challenges brought by the global coronavirus outbreak, we continue our commitment to supporting the Asian film industry.

With support from Create Hong Kong and Hong Kong Film Development Fund, the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA) last year presented three Asian Cinerama film roadshows in Hong Kong, Barcelona and Warsaw, and another one in Hong Kong this May, attending by film talents including ODAGIRI Joe, Christopher DOYLE, LIN Shu Yu, Angelica LEE and Crisel CONSUNJI. We also held a Masterclass with Hong Kong veteran director Fruit CHAN at the Five Flavours Asian Film Festival in Warsaw and conducted an online screenplay workshop by Singaporean film director-screenwriter Anthony CHEN. Film education is one of the main objectives of the AFAA. Last year, we sent young talents for professional internships at the Bologna film restoration lab in Italy, and this year to post-production houses in Bangkok and Berlin. We also brought a group of students to participate in the Singapore Film Festival last November. I wish AFAA continuing success in providing platforms for nurturing talents and facilitating exchanges in the film industry.

I would like to thank our founding partners Busan International Film Festival and Tokyo International Film Festival for their collaboration, and extend my gratitude to all our partners and supporters.

Thank you all for helping to make AFA a success. 一 年 一 度 的 亞 洲 電 影 大 獎 於 2 0 0 7 年 創 辦，旨 在 表 揚 傑 出 的 亞 洲 電 影 作 品 和 人 才。歷 屆 頒 獎 典 禮 曾 分 别 於 香 港 及 澳 門 舉 行，今 年 首 度 移 師 至 韓 國 釜 山。來 自 1 5 個 國 家 及 地 區 的 3 9 部 電 影 將 角 逐 1 6 項 大 獎。即 使 面 對 全 球 疫 情 帶 來 的 種 種 困 難，我 們 仍 會 竭 盡 所 能 團 結 大 家，履 行 我 們 對 亞 洲 電 影 業 的 責 任。 承 蒙 創 意 香 港 及 電 影 發 展 基 金 資 助，亞 洲 電 影 大 獎 學 院 ( 學 院 ) 上 年 於 香 港、巴 塞 隆 拿 及 華 沙 舉 辦「亞 洲 電 影 巡 迴 放 映」活 動，分 別 邀 請 了 小 田 切 讓、杜 可 風、林 書 宇、李 心 潔、姬 素 孔 尚 治 出 席 映 後 座 談；並 與 華 沙 五 味 亞 洲 電 影 節 合 辦 香 港 導 演 陳 果 大 師 班，與 當 地 觀 眾 分 享 其 創 作 經 驗。今 年 5 月 學 院 再 次 在 香 港 舉 行 巡 迴 放 映 活 動，並 舉 辦 了 新 加 坡 導 演 及 編 劇 陳 哲 藝 的 線 上 編 劇 工 作 坊。 學 院 一 直 以 培 育 電 影 人 才 為 己 任，分 別 與 著 名 意 大 利 博 洛 尼 亞 電 影 修 復 公 司、德 國 柏 林 及 泰 國 曼 谷 後 期 制 作 室 合 辦 訓 練 課 程，安 排 八 位 業 內 年 輕 人 遠 赴 當 地，進 行 為 期 三 個 月 的 實 習。 去 年 1 1 月，學 院 帶 領 一 批 香 港 大 學 生 出 席 新 加 坡 國 際 電 影 節，與 世 界 各 地 的 電 影 工 作 者 交 流。我 希 望 學 院 能 繼 續 秉 承 推 廣 亞 洲 電 影 事 業 的 傳 統，為 業 界 提 供 培 育 優 秀 人 才 及 促 進 藝 術 交 流 的 平 台。 我 在 此 感 謝 學 院 的 創 辦 機 構 釜 山 國 際 電 影 節 和 東 京 國 際 電 影 節，及 各 位 支 持 亞 洲 電 影 大 獎 的 合 作 夥 伴。

The history of film records the moment the Lumière brothers screened a film for a few dozen viewers 125 years ago as the birth of cinema. The first step in film art and industry was not the creation of the first “moving picture” but the first time a film was shared with the audience.

Despite the difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, film professionals around the world are working hard even today, making films and thinking of the days their films will meet the audience. Ironically, as we struggle through the hardships caused by the pandemic, we have come to realize the value and importance of making and screening films, as well as what is at the core of the cinematic art and industry.

Beyond recognizing and celebrating the achievements of Asian films, the 14th Asian Film Awards is a chance to ask ourselves what it means to make film and watch it together. Above all, I am grateful for this opportunity to strengthen the sense of solidarity among Asian film professionals through cooperation with the Hong Kong International Film Festival and Tokyo International Film Festival at a time when solidarity is needed more than ever. Furthermore, I hope that it will help us remove the barriers between borders that are still high for Asian film professionals and take a step forward into the future.

It is very significant that the 14th Asian Film Awards (AFA) will take place in Busan for the first time, despite all the hardships as a result of COVID-19, and I pay my heartfelt respect and gratitude to all those who are involved.

The Tokyo International Film Festival is in the midst of preparations to hold our festival physically from the end of October, after our decision to embrace the new normal. We would like to emphasize the importance of film art in enriching people’s lives and giving them courage.

ASIAN FILM AWARDS ACADEMY

The Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA) was founded in 2013 by Busan, Hong Kong, and Tokyo International Film Festivals. AFAA is a non-profit organisation that aims to promote and develop Asian cinema and its talents. AFAA highlights, strengthens and develops Asian film industry and culture through the annual Asian Film Awards (AFA) and several year-round initiatives.

Members of AFAA are drawn from past nominees and winners of the Asian Film Awards. Members vote for the Asian Film Awards and participate in various AFAA activities involving film professionals and audiences in Asia and around the world.

With financial support from Create Hong Kong and Film Development Fund of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the AFAA conducts events and activities year-round, including the Masterclass Series, Journey to the Fest – Student Visits to International Film Festivals, Asian Cinerama – Film Roadshows, Film Craft Workshops, and Young Film Professionals Overseas Training Programme.

Supported by film festivals and cultural associations, AFAA has pursued its mission to promote, educate, inform and develop knowledge, skills, and interest in Asian cinema among the industry, students and audiences in Asia and beyond.

The establishment of AFAA is a testament to the increasing global importance and creative strengths of film industries across Asia. Sabrina BARACETTI is a founding member and president of Udine Far East Film Festival and president of cultural organisation and arthouse exhibition company Centro Espressioni Cinematografiche, head of acquisitions of the distribution company Tucker Film, co-founder and consultant for Ties That Bind and member of the Board of Directors at Friuli Cinematheque. She served as a jury member on various film festivals dedicated to Asian Cinema.

ISHIZAKA Kenji is the Senior Programmer of Tokyo International Film Festival. He is a film critic. He was Film Coordinator at the Japan Foundation and serves as Dean/Professor at the Japan Institute of the Moving Image (a.k.a. Imamura Shohei Film School).

Jennifer JAO obtained her M.A. from University of Colorado Boulder of U.S.A. JAO joined the Central Motion Picture Corporation at the management department and participated in more than 60 films. JAO worked as a producer of Taipei Factory I & II, Torokko, and HBO Asia Original Series Dream Raider, The Moon is Always Full and Love Talk.

Currently she is also the Vice President of Asian Film Commissions Network, Vice Chairman and Director of Taipei Film Commission, and member of several other film related organisations.

NAM Dong-chul began as a staff writer in 1995 for the Korean weekly film magazine Cine21, and has been editorin-chief since 2004. He served as General Manager of Asian Film Market from 2008 to 2013. He worked as Programmer of Busan International Film Festival from 2013 and as Program Director since 2019.

Briccio SANTOS is a painter, director and a writer, known for his films Manikang Papel ‘Damortis’, Ala Verde Ala Pobre.

He chaired the Film Development Council of the Philippines for six years (20102016), establishing the first national film archives during his tenure. He continues to exhibit his paintings and has published books on poetry and photography. He is currently the president of Film ASEAN.

Jacob WONG is Director of the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) at the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society. He is also the Delegate for mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong for the Berlin International Film Festival.

Janet WU Yanyan has been working on feature films, TV series and co-production projects in China and the US, many of which had box office success and recognition at major international film festivals.
