Leap of Faith for local charity

A group of high-flying fundraisers took the saying ‘the sky’s the limit’ to a whole new level last week as they took part in a charity skydive for a Bradford project.

In total, five brave volunteers headed to Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, to complete the nerve-wrecking challenge as they raised funds for the Woolly Winter Appeal with the Human Relief Foundation.

helped to raise more than £1,300 in total.

The money will go towards purchasing and distributing hats, gloves and scarves for homeless people in Bradford, Keighley and Leeds in partnership with the InTouch Foundation.

Amongst those taking part in the daring leap was Humera Ahmed, who got involved with the project as a way of helping a local cause.

Describing the experience as ‘amazing’ she said: “The whole day was the most amazing experience I have had and I was able to complete it with the best people.

“I still can’t believe that it’s over.

I jumped out of a plane at 15,000ft at 120mph, and it was the most amazing experience ever, it was so unreal and I absolutely loved it.”

Mustafa Patel, speaking on behalf of the HRF said the efforts of all the volunteers was ‘awesome’ and thanked them for their support for the charity.

“HRF have done plenty of sky dives before but this was the first group I ever took for such an event and it was great to see the reactions of the volunteers after the jump,” he said.

“When they finished, not one of them could really believe what they had just done, jumping from around 15,000ft out of the sky.

“Their fundraising efforts were awesome and done alongside their busy lives, whether that is in school, college or university.”

Strengthening interfaith relations

A new covenant setting out the principles which will underpin future partnership and engagement work between Leeds City Council and faith and belief organisations has been officially signed this week.

This follows the approval of a report by Leeds City Council’s executive board in February 2015 which looking at how the authority and faith and belief groups could strengthen further their relationship, recommended the formation of a covenant as a basis to promote open practical working at all levels in the future.

As part of the discussions which formed the executive report, the council, in partnership with the University of Leeds, consulted a range of faith and belief groups including the Leeds Faiths Forum and FaithAction.

Jobseekers get head start

Young jobseekers in Leeds have been mixing it up at some of the city’s top cocktail bars thanks to a council-run job support scheme.

Head Start, which is run by Leeds City Council, gives young people searching for jobs the chance to take up training and work experience placements with local employers.

The Jones Bar Group, which recently celebrated its 10th and most successful year in the industry, has found permanent jobs for young people through the scheme.

And now council chiefs have issued a rallying cry to other local firms, calling on them to give more of the city’s young people a chance.

Where to learn

Families applying for their child’s secondary school place have been finding out which school their child has been allocated for September 2015.

Over 6600 children (83 per cent) will be attending their first preference school in September and overall, 96 per cent will attend one of their top five preferences. This year Leeds City Council has allocated 7962 year seven places.

The number of children not getting any of their five preferences at secondary school was only 4.5 per cent. The council’s admissions team is now working hard with families to agree alternative places for all children who did not get any of their preferences.

Putting the ‘CHA CHA’ in Charity Evening of dance raises £30,000 for hospice

Fundraisers laced up their dancing shoes last weekend as the ‘Martin House Strictly Get Dancing’ event returned to Wetherby for a night of waltzing and tango.

Fifteen couples competed for this year’s crown in front of a crowd of more than 400 as they danced the night away on Saturday 28th February.

After showcasing their skills infront of the team of celebrity judges, and a willing audience, it was Ian Naylor and Melissa Magson who eventually came out victorious to claim the dancing title.

Jay and Bhranti Naik, and Julie and Lee Walker finished as runners-up following the event which helped raise an amazing £30,000 for the hospice.

At the start of the year, many of the couples hadn’t even danced a step in their lives yet after six

weeks of lessons, they took centre stage in the annual charity event.

Jay and Bhranti first began working with the hospice via the Give a Gift project over a year ago and decided to take on the dancing challenge as a way of raising money through an initiative their whole family was interested in.

Self confessed ‘avid Strictly fans’, the couple completed the group tango routine to open the show on the night, before the crowd were treated to an Argentine Tango and finally the classic Waltz.

Bhranti said she was delighted to see such a ‘fantastic’ sum of money raised for the hospice, all of which will go towards helping children cared for at Martin House and their families.

Explaining more about why they took up the challenge this year, Bhranti said: “We have two children of our own and every time Strictly comes on the telly, we make a full evening of it, from watching each dance to scoring them ourselves.

Faster trains in Bradford

Faster rail journeys to and from Bradford could be on the cards as the electrification of the Calder Valley line is one of the first to be recommended for prioritisation according to a report to the Secretary of State for Transport.

The Calder Valley - Leeds to Manchester line via Bradford has been highlighted as one of 12 in the north of England which needs speeding up as a priority because of the economic impact it will bring.

And Bradford Council leader Coun David Green, sitting on the fivestrong North of England Electrification Task Force, has been instrumental in the report.

Cllr Green said: “This report provides a sound starting point for a stable electrification programme for railways in the North of England.”

“After every series, Jay and I always say we should take dance classes but have just never got round to it. When we heard about this project we put our names down and the whole experience has been really enjoyable.”

Bhranti says she attended dance classes during her youth yet for husband Jay, it was a completely new experience.

“We had around 12 hours in total where we were taught the routines which were quite hard, especially for Jay who has never danced in his life,” she added.

“He did really well to not only learn the right steps but the posture, rhythm and everything else that came with the dances.

“To then perform in front of 400 people was really nerve-wrecking for the pair of us but once we were out there, after the first 10 seconds, you just start to enjoy it.

“There was so much goodwill in the room that the nerves went away.”

All the couples on the night were watched by an esteemed

judging panel comprised of ITV Calendar’s Christine Talbot, Rose Chadwick from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Jeff Hordley from Emmerdale and actor/teacher Christopher Tauers.

Meanwhile, Duncan Wood acted as compère for the evening’s entertainment.

Sarah Tarpey from Martin House, who organised the event, said: “Ian and Melissa put on an amazing show, dancing with grace and elegance.

“I am delighted that they won and congratulations to runners up, Jay and Bhranti Naik, and Julie and Lee Walker.

“I am immensely proud of all 14 couples who took part for embracing this event and raising such a phenomenal amount for the hospice.”

Surgeon heads to Africa in aid mission

No bin changes

Residents across the Wakefield district are being notified that changes to household waste collections scheduled to take place this month will now be delayed until the summer because vital recycling equipment is stranded due to the exceptionally icy conditions 3,500 miles away in North America.

Wakefield Council is telling householders to ignore letters advising of bin round changes from 16th March and says these changes will now take place later in the year.

Household bin collections will continue as normal with no changes to collection days or the current system of three wheelie bins and a recycling box until further notice.

A new, world-renowned, high intensity workout fitness programme is set to be launched this week at one of Bradford Council’s Clubactive Health and Fitness sites.

The INSANITY workout fitness program, created by US fitness trainer Shaun T, will be launched at Thornton Recreation Centre on Wednesday 11th March.

The 30 minute workout uses ‘Max Interval Training’, meaning that participants work flat out for three to five minute periods, before having a short break – just long enough to catch their breath, and then going right back into it.

This ensures participants are constantly pushing their limits, keeping bodies working at maximum capacity throughout the entire workout, and taking high-intensity a new level.

Free INSANITY Launch classes start on Wednesday 11th March at Thornton Recreation Centre Centre, 7pm-7.30pm, 7.30pm - 8pm and 8pm - 8.30pm. Following these, four more half hour sessions will be run during the week. See Thornton Recreation Centre’s fitness class timetable for details.

A local optometrist says he hopes to set up an eye surgery in one of the most povertystricken areas of Sudan in the future as he prepares for his first aid mission later this month.

Ishtiyak Mahomed, from Thornton, will be travelling to the African nation on 15th March as part of a convoy from the Mercy Mission charity.

There, he will visit refugee camps in the area of Kassala, which is home to more than 150,000 people, and deliver food to hungry families.

Having already raised £2,000 in donations, Mr Mahomed says the aid distribution is just one part of his trip with a long term vision already being constructed in his mind.

“I want to see if there is anything I can do from a surgical point of view to help the local people and then long-term set up a project to get better eye-care in the area,” he said.

“For children to have a good education they need good eyesight yet the services are just not available in some places of the world such as the refugee camps.

“If I can help the children in these areas achieve something by giving them access to better eye care I want to do that.

“Hopefully, I will be able to go back with a clear picture of what I can do in the future from a surgical standpoint in the area.”

Mr Mahomed says he also thinks the trip will be an ‘eye-opener’ to what ‘real poverty is like’ and was looking forward to the experience.

“I grew up in South Africa before moving to the UK so I have seen what real poverty looks like first hand on Soweto,” he said.

“To see it again now will be an eye-opener. I don’t think I will be able to actually comprehend the extent of the problem until I get to Sudan and spend the five days with the charity.”

He added. “I am already planning on going back. Charity is an important part of my life and my faith so if there is something I can do to help, I will try my best to do it.”

The camp Mr Mahomed will be visiting has existed for the past 40 years with humanitarian aid in the area in short supply.

Tough new measures announced by Prime Minister on tackling sexual exploitation

New criminal sanctions for those who fail to protect children from sexual exploitation are at the heart of a package of new measures announced by the Prime Minister, David Cameron.

The government says it will consult on extending the new criminal offence of ‘wilful neglect’ of patients to children’s social care, education and elected members as part of its national response to damning reports by Alexis Jay, Ann Coffey, Louise Casey and others, which found systematic institutional failings and cultures of denial and blame in Rotherham, and elsewhere.

The Prime Minister - alongside the Home Secretary and Secretaries of State for Health, Justice, Education and Communities and Local Government - met leaders from local authorities, children’s services, health professionals, Chief Constables and experts in child protection in Downing Street where he demanded local areas work more effectively to strengthen the systems in place to protect children.

The new plans aim to ensure local areas have long term practical strategies to uncover child sexual exploitation (CSE) and bring more offenders to justice - or face tough consequences.

Mr Cameron said: “We have all been appalled at the abuse suffered by so many young girls in Rotherham and elsewhere across the country. Children were ignored, sometimes even blamed, and issues were swept under the carpet – often because of a warped and misguided

sense of political correctness. That culture of denial which let them down so badly must be eradicated.

“I am sending an unequivocal message that professionals who fail to protect children will be held properly accountable and council bosses who preside over such catastrophic failure will not see rewards for that failure.

“Offenders must no longer be able to use the system to hide their despicable activities and survivors of child sexual abuse must be given the long-term therapeutic treatment they need to re-build their lives.

“But it is not just about introducing new policies. It is about making sure that the professionals we charge with protecting our children – the council staff, police officers and social workers – do the jobs they are paid to do.

“We owe it to our children, and to the children who survive horrific sexual abuse, to do better and ensure the mistakes of the past are never repeated again.”

The cross-government national response, led by the Home Secretary Theresa May, was commissioned by the Prime Minister following revelations of a long-term culture of denial in Rotherham, where it is estimated at least 1,400 children were sexually abused over a number of years, as well as elsewhere.

Representatives from local areas across the country including Rochdale, Nottingham, Kent, Middlesbrough and Barking and Dagenham; the newly appointed Commissioner for Rotherham Sir Derek Myers, Professor Alexis Jay, Sarah Champion MP, the new

Children’s’ Commissioner Anne Longfield, and the national policing lead Chief Constable Simon Bailey were among the attendees at the Downing Street event.

An additional £7 million has been given this year to organisations which support the victims of sexual abuse.

The Department of Health has also published new guidance on the role of school nursing services in preventing CSE and the Department for Education will announce a new £3.8 million allocation of its Innovation Programme.

Sheffield and South Yorkshire Councils were allocated £1.2m to develop a sub-regional delivery model for young people experiencing or at risk of child sexual exploitation. This will include

Perpetrators have been free to walk the streets for years with impunity: child sexual abuse will now be prioritised as a national threat, like serious and organised crime which means police forces now have a duty to collaborate with each other across force boundaries to safeguard children including more efficient sharing of resources, intelligence and best practice, supported by specialist regional CSE police coordinators.

recruitment, development and support of specialist foster carers to provide safe placements for young people across South Yorkshire.

Local authorities involved are Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. Other partners are LSCBs in these areas and South Yorkshire Police.

Wigan and Rochdale Councils were given £956,000 to find alternatives to high cost and secure accommodation for victims of, or those at risk of, child sexual exploitation, and to improve outcomes for those young people and their families. They plan to develop and deliver a research programme and pilot which involves testing a new hub and spoke social care service model with 30 young people in Wigan and Rochdale, with the intention of scaling this up across Greater Manchester’s local authorities.

Meanwhile £1.9m was given to St Christopher’s Fellowship to develop a children’s home with wrap-around care in London for looked-after girls at risk of sexual exploitation, gang membership and substance misuse who might otherwise be placed in secure children’s homes on welfare grounds.

Finally, Durham County Council recieved £496,000 to open a new unit at Aycliffe - their Secure Children’s Home - to test a new model of support targeting the trauma experienced by young people who have been sexually exploited. They intend to couple this with an extended “step-down” service to support the young people in making the transition from the secure setting into more independent living.

Researchers to build

‘Smart Trousers’ Robotic clothing to be developed in Leeds

A prosthetic hand controlled by the nervous system, robotic clothing to help people with walking, and biosensors to monitor how patients use equipment or exercise during rehabilitation are the focus of three research projects awarded £5.3 million by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The three innovative research projects start work in the spring and are led by Newcastle University, the University of Bristol and the University of Warwick working with 15 other partners including the University of Leeds.

UK scientists and clinicians devised the research after being challenged to transform the design and development of assistive and rehabilitative devices using EPSRC’s creative workshop approach, known as a ‘sandpit’.

Philip Nelson, Chief Executive of EPSRC explained: “These research studies will improve patients’ lives, allow greater independence and benefit patients with a wide range of mobility and co-ordination difficulties.

“With the UK’s ageing population and a rise in disabilities, this highlights one area of EPSRC investment in healthcare research which has a national impact.”

In Leeds, a team of researchers will be working with a number of universities to develop soft robotic clothing to improve mobility.

The initial objective, expected to be delivered in eighteen months, is to develop a ‘smart sock’, which would aid people recovering from ankle injuries who may struggle to pull their foot upwards when taking a stride.

The fabric in the ‘smart sock’ will be designed to provide the force needed to get a foot into the right position.

By the end of the project, in three years, the team plans to develop a pair of ‘smart trousers’ that give added bionic strength to help wearers climb stairs and stand up. The trousers could also help avoid falls by detecting and providing extra support when the user is losing balance.

Dr Abbas Dehghani, Senior Lecturer in the University of Leeds’ School of Mechanical Engineering, will develop the intelligent control system to direct when and how the fabric moves.

“The system has to be able to work out what the user is trying to do; it is no good the trousers trying to help you walk, if you actually want to sit down,” Dr Dehghani said.

“My job is to develop that top-level intelligent control and the systems that work out and coordinate the movement of the clothing to support that activity.”

“These research studies will improve patients’ lives, allow greater independence and benefit patients with a wide range of mobility and co-ordination difficulties.”

Mr Khan said that the company was solvent when he handed it over and it was difficult to see how the administrator had come to this decision as he had not counted Mr Khan’s investment fully.

The local restaurateur has always claimed that most of the money owed was in fact his investment and that the club should not have been affected.

The original report by Leedsbased administrator David Wilson stated Mr Khan had invested just £375,000 whilst in actual fact the figure, as the High Court confirmed, was much closer to the million mark.

During the administration process, any creditor is able to call for a creditor’s meeting with the amount invested by each creditor equating to that person’s voting power. Mr Khan

arranged this meeting at his own expense.

As the majority shareholder his votes would have determined the outcome of the meeting.

However, the Rugby Football League were also given a vote after claiming, the day before, that they were owed £900,000, something the High Court ruled was wrong, adding that the RFL should not have had any say at all.

Mr Khan says that a well known creditor, who will be named shortly, voted on the side of the administrator, so that the administration ended and an investigation, which is what Mr Khan wanted to propose by appointing an independent liquidator, could not take place Mr Khan is now attempting to rearrange a creditors meeting where he is optimistic of his proposals being passed, without the influence of the RFL’s vote, and the possibility of a full investigation being launched into

the administration by having a liquidator appointed.

Speaking about his victory at court, he said: “It was a relief to hear the correct verdict. This club should never have gone down. It wasn’t in debt, and the million pounds was mine not the clubs.

“I have been called a thief and accused of so much over the past year but this ruling is just the start of the truth coming out. I have even been made to look like a liar by the administration when all the evidence was there to prove otherwise.

“We are currently seeking to reschedule that key creditors meeting and are in talks with the administration’s solicitors.

“I am hopeful of putting my proposals forward and having the chance to see a full investigation into the administration launched.”

If a meeting can be arranged, the administration will write to all the creditors, including Mr Khan, to ask them to return and

put forward their proposals.

Places of worship ‘need more protection’ Calls for new legislation following mosque invaders

Britain First members who marched into Mosques in Bradford will not face any charges, the Crown Prosecution Service has revealed, sparking a call for greater protection for places of worship.

Representatives from the farright group entered the sites in May last year where they handed out British army bibles, leaflets, and told people to convert to Christianity.

Despite calls for action to be taken by the authorities, it was last week decided that there was ‘no criminal case to answer’.

Superintendent Vince Firth, partnerships lead for Bradford District Police, said: “We thoroughly investigated the incidents involving Britain First in Bradford and presented an evidence file to the CPS. “Each complainant has been personally visited by a police officer and updated about the result of the investigation. The actions of Britain First caused great offence to many, but the people of Bradford responded in the right way - by acting with the utmost dignity.

“Together, we continue to provide support and offer reassurance through our Neighbourhood Policing patrols and council warden teams.”

Vice-president of Bradford’s Council for Mosques, Zulfiqar Karim, said the decision highlighted a need for new legislation to be introduced to help protect the religious places.

Having spoke with officers following the ‘invasion’ last year he also provided CCTV footage of the group at the Westgate Mosque site.

In that video, members of the Britain First group were seen walking inside the building with their shoes on, filming their actions and leaving bibles on site.

Mr Karim added that he would like to see the Home Secretary, Theresa May, review current laws to ensure repeat incidents are avoided.

“At the moment there are no laws which protect places of worship from these types of incidents but it is my understanding that such

legislation did exist around 200 years ago,” he said.

“That law was changed for one reason or another but it is now time that we revisit that.

“We would like to see the Home Secretary look at the current legislation, of which, at this moment in time, provides no adequate protection.”

He continued: “It is like walking into a person’s home when uninvited. These people are just exploiting the loopholes in the law to go somewhere (places of worship) they should not be.

“It is a very difficult time for Muslims at the moment but it isn’t just Muslims who need this extra protection. All places of worship should be respected in the same way.”

The Britain First group arrived at the mosque on 10th May and also visited the home of former Lord Mayor, Cllr Khadim Hussain.

Despite no worshippers being present at the mosque at the time of the visit, Mr Karim adds that he fears what would happen if such an incident did occur.

“We understand that there has been a thorough investigation by the Police and Crown Prosecution Service but the people who came here were very smart in their actions,” he said.

“It is what I would label provocation and that isn’t right.

People should not be able to go into a place of worship just to get a reaction from innocent members of the public.

“What if there was private prayers being read or a congregation inside the mosque. I fear that if something like this happens again, there might be a different reaction.”

West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) welcomed an announcement by the Department for Transport (DfT) last week that their application for £22.1million for Leeds City Region cycling schemes has been successful.

The amount will also be matched through local funding sources taking the total allocation to £30m in the next three years for CityConnect2.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority Chair Cllr Peter Box said: “Cycling and walking are important elements of the transport network and are key to providing people with links to employment and training opportunities.

“CityConnect2 will enable WYCA to deliver transformational cycle infrastructure schemes in Bradford, Calderdale, Huddersfield, Leeds, Wakefield and York, connecting to key employment and regeneration sites.”

Exciting art exhibition

The first major exhibition of Bradford-born artist Sir William Rothenstein in more than 40 years opens this weekend at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery.

From Bradford to Benares: The Art of Sir William Rothenstein opens on Saturday, 7 March and runs until Sunday, 12 July.

At the turn of the century Bradfordborn Rothenstein (1872-1945) was considered to be one of the leading artists of his generation. These days he is better known for his other roles: as a prolific memoirist and correspondent, an influential mentor, or one-time Principal of the Royal College of Arts in London.

This exhibition, the first of its kind since 1972, aims to put the spotlight back onto Rothenstein's achievements as a painter, draughtsman and printmaker.

A series of tennis taster sessions have been arranged for throughout March at Headingley Campus for the blind and visually impaired.

Leeds Beckett Tennis is offering the free sessions, from 4-5pm, on Monday 9th, 16th and 23rd March, to raise awareness of the sport and get people involved in visually impaired (VI) tennis. It is hoped that the sessions will then continue to run weekly if demand is high enough.

The Tennis Centre at our University is part of the Tennis Disability Network, providing programmes for wheelchair tennis, and has recently hosted a Regional Learning Disability Camp and Tournament.

Louise Assioun, our University’s Tennis Manager, has co-written the CPD qualification for Tennis Coaches in VI Tennis, which is being delivered nationally.

Only locals to use recycling sites

From 1st April 2015, only Leeds residents will be able to use the city’s eight recycling centres.

Following similar moves by neighbouring authorities, Leeds City Council is introducing permits so that only people living in Leeds can use the Leeds facilities.

Waste disposal costs are on the up and the council can no longer afford to accept waste from people living outside the city who do not contribute to the cost of the service.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “In today’s financial climate, we simply cannot offer what is effectively a subsidy to other councils for waste disposal.

“We’ve reluctantly come to the conclusion that in order to keep costs down and to be fair to our residents, Leeds recycling centres can only be used by our residents.”

Keighley back to its best

Part of a scheme to return parts of Keighley town centre back to their Edwardian splendour is nearing completion.

Pavement improvements on North Street and High Street have seen tarmac replaced by natural Yorkshire stone flags, which complement the work already carried out to restore the town's historic buildings, as part of the Keighley Townscape Initiative.

The project has sourced old photographs from around 1900 from Keighley Library archives to research how buildings and streets looked at the time so that details of the scheme were accurate.

The pavement improvements are almost complete with the benefit of £265,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) along with funding from Bradford Council and other sources.

Gaza doctors return A group of UK-funded NHS surgeons have returned from treating war-wounded patients in Gaza six months after the temporary ceasefire was agreed.

The volunteer doctors visited the region regularly for the past six months to carry out surgery on patients with severe injuries and train doctors in Gaza hospitals to improve their surgical capacities.

The team were deployed by Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), working with NGO Ideals, with £724,000 in funding from the Department for International Development (DFID).

The funding is part of DFID’s £37 million package of assistance in response to the 2014 Gaza crisis.

Justine Greening, International Development Secretary, said: “Six months on from the temporary ceasefire the situation in Gaza remains dire. Around 108,000 people were left homeless by the conflict and over 11,000 Palestinians were injured.

“The vital work of these British surgeons is an important part of the UK effort to help the people of Gaza rebuild their lives.

However none of the underlying causes of the conflict have yet been addressed. The UK is playing its part to help those caught up in the conflict, but it is clear the need for a political solution for Gaza is more urgent than ever.”

Amongst the patients who were treated by the British doctors, was nine-year-old Weam.

She was playing in the garden of her home with her father last summer when a rocket landed on them and exploded. She suffered major

Two days after the operation, Dr Graeme Groom - an orthopaedic surgeon from King’s College Hospital in London, visited Weam with the team of medics to check up on how she’s recovering.

“I’m happy because they’ve removed all the shrapnel from my leg and I feel better now.

Before my leg felt very heavy and now it feels free” she said.

Weam’s mother just wants her daughter to get back to

normal.

“I’m so thankful to these doctors giving up their time to come here and help the people of Gaza” she says.

“The facilities here are not good, there is not enough equipment and everything, but with these people coming they bring hope.

“I hope there will be no more wars making problems for our children.

“I just want to see my daughter growing up, continuing her study, playing like other kids and eventually working.”

A Dewsbury school celebrated the official opening of its new library last week whilst similar services in the area continue to be under threat of closure.

The official launch of Carlton Primary School’s latest facilities occurred on Wednesday 4th March when Dewsbury Rams mascot, Roger Ram, was on hand to officially cut the proverbial ribbon alongside staff and pupils.

Developed as part of head teacher, Rizwana Mahmood’s, attempts to ‘take education beyond the classroom’, the room is a major improvement on the former facilities.

Explaining the importance of developing the independent study area, Mrs Mahmood said: “The Carlton Community Library will help us to raise the profile of reading within the community and enable children to improve their independent study skills both during and out of school hours.

“Reading for fun, learning beyond the classroom and parental engagement are priority areas for Carlton.”

Reports of library closures in Kirklees have been prominent in recent months, with residents signing petitions to ensure their local facilities remain open.

However, due to council cuts, 24 of the 26 libraries in the region are still in danger of closure as millions of pounds are needed to be slashed from the budget.

Mrs Mahmood adds that the new Carlton amenities will therefore be even more crucial for the children’s development and hoped they could benefit the whole community.

Teen pregnancies on the decrease

The rate of pregnancy amongst teenagers across the Bradford district has fallen again according to the latest three year averages released by the government.

Bradford has the lowest rate for conceptions amongst under-18s in West Yorkshire according to The Office for National Statistics.

There was an average of 28.9 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged under-18 between 2011-2013 compared to 31.1 in 2010-12 and 34.7 in 2009-11.

Bradford Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Coun Ralph Berry, said: "The latest fall in the rate of teenage pregnancies is the result of hard work by teachers, health workers, carers and parents in Bradford to tackle this issue.

AWARD: Habiban Zaman will head to the House of Lords later this year to receive her BCHA

Over the past 25 years, Habiban Zaman has worked tirelessly to promote community cohesion across Kirklees with her efforts even recognised by her majesty the Queen last year in her annual Birthday List.

Less than 12 months later, and the mother-of-one from Dewsbury is now planning her next trip to the capital after being awarded the British Community Honours Award (BCHA) for her work with social cohesion and integration.

The BCHAs are presented to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the welfare and integration of minority communities into mainstream British society.

Through Habiban’s work with her local community, she has gone the extra and mile, and beyond, in ensuring cohesion is established between all cultures and social policy is developed with each resident in mind.

Upon receiving the letter, the ‘community champion’ said she didn’t have any idea

what it was and initially just placed the closed envelope on the side to be opened later.

Having finally peaked inside, Habiban learned of her award and said she could not believe it, but was extremely excited.

She said: “I didn’t even realise how much of a prestigious award this was until I read into it a little more and it is a really big thing.

“To have been put forward for this is just incredible and I have even now been told that I will be the first person in Kirklees to collect a BHCA.” She added: “We need to ensure that we are encouraging interaction between communities and enabling people of all backgrounds to participate in wider society and institutions.

Habiban was commended in HM the Queen’s Birthday Honours with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to women in 2014.

She will now head down to the House of Lords in October to collect her latest BCHA.

Dr Andrew Furber, Director of Public Health, is encouraging people to take inspiration from a national campaign - where former smokers explain what motivated them to stop.

The Proud Quitters campaign run by the British Heart Foundation encourages people to take steps towards stopping smoking.

Smoking related diseases such as cancer and heart disease are the biggest causes of preventable illness and premature death in the Wakefield district.

Dr Furber said: “No Smoking Day provides a real focus each year for supporting those who want to give up smoking. Giving up is one of the most positive decisions any one can make for their health.”

H-APP-y times for Leeds students City’s techwhizzes triumph in countywide competition A team of business-savvy students from Leeds proved they were the real deal when it comes to innovation last week as they won the best app award at the Yorkshire Coca-Cola Enterprises Real Business Challenge.

The eight girls, all in Y10 at the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) had previously qualified for the Yorkshire finals, held at the York Barbican, on the strength of a presentation they had prepared in school.

On the day, with a place in the nationals at stake, nine school teams were tasked with promoting the Special Olympics, which provides sports training and competitions programmes for children and adults with

Included in the tasks was the design of an app to promote the Special Olympics and a fundraising sports day.

It was here that the GSAL team excelled in the contest and scooped the award for Best App. Team member Mahika Gogi said: “We were under a lot of time pressure on the day, with about six tasks to complete in three hours.

Despite not making it through to

the final we were delighted to win the best app award for our Flappy Bird inspired app incorporating a pedometer to promote fitness.”

Luke Clogher, teacher of business studies and economics, added: “The team were outstanding on the day, energetic, positive and working really well as a team. Their award was well deserved – they put some creative ideas into a very well-designed app.

They also gave an exceptionally good presentation for their age group.

“The competition is based on marketing and promotion and stretches the students well beyond GCSE level and what they learn in class. It also shows students that what they learn about business can be used to promote social aims and help others.”

Government’s antiradicalisation strategy branded ‘toxic’ A former senior Muslim police officer has described the Government’s antiradicalisation Prevent strategy as ‘a toxic brand’.

Dal Babu, who retired as a chief superintendent with the Metropolitan Police in 2013, said most Muslims are suspicious of the scheme and see it as something used for spying on them.

With an annual budget of £40 million, Prevent is one of four strands of Contest, the acronym given to the Government's multipronged counter-terrorism strategy.

But the programme, which is aimed at stopping people becoming terrorists, has come under the spotlight after hundreds of Britons are believed to have travelled to Syria to join Islamic State (IS), including three London schoolgirls who fled the UK last month.

Mr Babu, who was chairman of the Association of Muslim Officers within the Met, told the BBC: “Sadly, Prevent has become a toxic brand and most Muslims are suspicious of what Prevent is doing.

“This is unfortunate but a reality and the Government needs to develop a coordinated strategy to safeguard vulnerable children who are being groomed by IS. “Many Muslims see Prevent as spying and those Muslim organisations who have taken Prevent funding have a considerable credibility gap within the Muslim community.”

Last year it was revealed that counterterror officers had received 77 reports from families through the Prevent programme, some of which enabled police to catch aspiring terrorists.

But Mr Babu said there was a ‘lack of knowledge’ around race and faith issues which was ‘amplified considerably with more junior officers who perform the role of implementing the Prevent strategy’.

Sir Peter Fahy, a vice president with the

Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), defended the Prevent programme and said parents must take responsibility for ensuring their children do not become radicalised.

“The prime responsibility for stopping young people from going to Syria, and thinking about that and being attracted by Isis, has to lie with parents,” he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

“If there is one thing possibly we have made a mistake in Prevent, it is we have created the impression that somehow that is the job of the police.”

Sir Peter said it was difficult to measure the success of a programme aimed at preventing terrorism but ‘the success rate here is that no bombs have gone off’.

He added that many Muslim leaders recognised they had not given a ‘clear enough message’ that extremism and travel to Syria is ‘wrong’.

“They've realised they’ve given space for too many extremists to speak up for the Muslim community rather than others,” Sir Peter said.

“They absolutely realise it’s their responsibility to encourage and prevent young people from going to Syria.’

A Home Office spokesman said: “As a country, we must consistently challenge the twisted narrative of extremism.

“This Government fundamentally revised the Prevent strategy in 2011 to ensure it challenges terrorist ideology, supports people who are vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism and works with sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation.

“Most importantly, we changed Prevent’s objectives so it also deals with non-violent extremism.”

He added that the Home Office was drawing up a new strategy which deals with ‘the whole spectrum of extremism’.

Bake-off Budding bakers head to the kitchen for school competition

Whisks and wooden spoons were at the ready last week as a thriving Leeds primary school held its own version of the ‘Great British Bakeoff’ with a little help from the experts.

The ‘Great Bankside Bakeoff’ saw hundreds of pupils from across the seven year groups take part in the project, cooking up their own ‘recipes for success’ in a school-wide competition.

From muffins to biscuits, the treats were all made with healthy eating in mind and put the budding baker’s skills to the test.

Staff from Harrogate’s world famous Betty’s Tea Room were also on hand to lend their advice and judge the finals in what was a highly anticipated day.

First place – a visit to Betty’s Tea Room, was awarded to a team from each year group, whilst teams were also rewarded for coming second, with a trip to York Chocolate Story, and third, with an in-school afternoon tea.

“We came up with the idea during a brainstorming session at school where we were thinking of fun, interactive ways of getting the children involved with the new curriculum,” he said.

“We held the successful Bankside’s Got Talent last year and so the idea of doing a bakeoff came naturally really.

“All the children across the year groups really engaged with the baking and showed real commitment to their work which was great to see.”

Children in each year group were handed a basic recipe to follow and were then given the creative freedom to adjust the instructions to make their products healthier and more nutritious.

The week long project also saw pupils creating posters, to raise

awareness of healthy eating and hygiene, whilst also discussing, in class, the importance of such matters.

Mr Miah added: “As well as having a lot of fun, the pupils learnt important lessons which will help them adapt to the new curriculum.

“A big congratulations goes out to everyone who took part and thanks to Betty’s Tea Room for judging the finals.”

CHARITY: InTouch Foundation founder and board member, Osman Gondal, helped deliver meals to young and old in some of Pakistan’s slums

The founder of a Bradford charity, which feeds the homeless across West Yorkshire every week, flew his charitable arm around the world last month as he landed in Pakistan.

Osman Gondal, from Allerton, helped establish the InTouch Foundation in December 2012 with a mobile soup kitchen set up in Bradford.

Since then, the portable kitchens have also launched in Keighley and Leeds whilst a food bank was established last year operating out of Manningham.

After arranging a trip to Pakistan to attend a family wedding in February, Osman decided to push the charity to new grounds and arranged for a number of projects to run in the South Asian country.

Working alongside the Human Relief Foundation and Muslim Aid, the 39-year-old helped deliver and distribute food in slums in Maherabadee, Islamabad, before hosting an event, with a warm meal and food parcels, for women and orphans, in the Punjab.

Speaking of why he wanted to take the charity to new grounds, he explained: “Poverty happens everywhere in the world and can affect anyone at anytime of their life.

In Pakistan, this doesn’t exist.

“The gap between the rich and the poor over there is huge with those most in need, lacking all the essentials from clean water supplies, drainage systems and of course food.

“There are a lot of good charities out there working with these people and I wanted to get InTouch involved with making a difference for those who need it most.”

Prior to the trip, more than £5,000 was raised through InTouch to purchase the foods and organise deliveries, whilst Osman covered his own costs

throughout the four-week visit.

After more than 400 food distributions in Maherabadee, Osman and representatives from the other two charities made the five hour journey to Jhang.

Here, an event had been organised to allow around 200 women and orphans to enjoy a warm meal, before food parcels, containing three weeks of produce, were handed out.

“That was the highlight of the trip for me, in Jhang,” Osman said.

“By working with the Human Relief Foundation and Muslim Aid, we served up warm meals to people who rarely have the chance to enjoy such a simple luxury which we may take for granted.

“That experience really touched home for me. To take the principles of InTouch to people in need elsewhere in the world was really special.”

Following the trips success, plans are now being developed to set up an InTouch project in Pakistan later this year.

“We would like to take InTouch over to Pakistan to have a permanent presence in the country and hope to have our first distribution in June,” Osman added.

“By using the same principles which have helped people here on our doorsteps, we hope to help other in the wider world.”

Sir James Paice, added that his visit to a halal abattoir had convinced him that post-cut stunning – when an animal was rendered senseless after being shot with a bolt through the head immediately after having its throat cut – could have a ‘significant’ impact on religious slaughter. It would be a compromise that may suit most parties in the process, he said.

Mike Freer, Finchley and Golders Green MP, said he believed the public was ‘completely divided’ on the topic, and that there was antisemitism and Islamophobia ‘lurking’ behind some arguments against religious slaughter.

MPs voted only on whether they agreed that the issue had been debated, rather than on whether they were in favour of religious slaughter or not.

George Eustice, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for farming and food, repeated the government's preference for prestunning.

He added: “The government have no plans at all to ban religious slaughter. The Prime Minister has been absolutely clear that there is no intention to ban religious slaughter.

However, everyone agrees that we need good enforcement of our existing legislation.”

Mr Eustice said the government would begin a series of unannounced, random inspections of British slaughterhouses.

Dr Shuja Shafi, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “The British Veterinary Association (BVA) should stop fanning the hysteria around religious slaughter and ‘get real’ on the true priority of animal welfare.

“If the BVA are genuinely concerned about animal welfare, we need to hear what they are doing about the duty of veterinarians to ensure the welfare of animals in the slaughterhouses, at all times, given the abuses reported.”

Maulana Yunus Dughala on behalf of the Halal Monitoring Committee UK says: “How many members of the public, or indeed, Members of Parliament are actually aware of the greater abuse and longerterm suffering of animals before they reach the slaughterhouse? How many have bothered to find out about the abuses that are occurring in non-religious slaughterhouses, including those labelled as organic?

“The UK’s largest animal rights group, Animal Aid, which has secretly filmed inside eleven UK abattoirs since 2009, has found ten of these breaking the law.

How many of the investigated abattoirs were for non-stunned halal meat? Only one - the other nine abuses Animal Aid recorded were at slaughterhouses for nonhalal slaughter.”

Maulana Yunus Dughala says the matter is less about stunning and non-stunning, halal, kosher or nonreligious, but about having good robust standards in place with regulations of those standards.

“It is about providing the resources for the MHS (Meat Hygiene Service) to have enough staff that can monitor and observe the welfare of animals across all slaughterhouses. It is about introducing CCTV cameras in abattoirs as an extra assurance for animal welfare,” she said

Halal and Kosher explained Muslims require food to be 'halal' and Jews 'shechita'. Both involve methods of slaughter that mean the animal has to be conscious before it is killed, that is not stunned first, which is the usual method in British slaughterhouses.

These are two religions which place great value on observing dietary laws and is part of what identifies a Muslim as a Muslim or a Jew as a Jew, not just to outsiders but to themselves. Muslims believe the rules of slaughtering animals derive from the Qu'ran; Jews from book of Deuteronomy.

The name for the halal method of slaughter is 'dhabiha' and one of the certifying bodies for halal food - the Halal Food Authority, does allow electrical stunning for sheep and poultry as long as the animal doesn't die.

Animals are killed with a swift incision to the throat from a razor sharp blade.

The animal must never see another animal being slaughtered nor must it ever see the blade being sharpened. They must be checked before slaughter to ensure they are healthy and given clean water to drink. Then they are turned to face Mecca, the prayer is recited, the jugular vein and carotid arteries are cut – leaving the spinal cord intact – and the blood drained from the carcass.

Shechita requires the animal has to be conscious and is carried out by a shoket – which involves a super-sharp blade called a chalaf being used to sever the throat. The blood is then drained.

Campaigners against religious slaughter argue that stunning the animal first is kinder. Different methods are used: gas stunning, which slowly renders the creature unconscious (birds and pigs are actually killed like this too); percussive stunning, used for cattle and sheep, in which a captive bolt is used to render it unconscious before it's hoisted into the air by one leg and stuck by the slaughterman; and electrical stunning, which involves passing a current through the brain. For sheep, this means shocking them with tongs on their heads; for birds, it involves hanging them by the feet and dipping them in an electrified water bath before the belt moves them on to a mechanical neckcutter.

Winter runners Fundraisers defeat the elements to conquer 10km

A group of fundraisers, aged from six to seventy-sixyears-old, battled wind, rain and snow last weekend to complete the 10km challenge from Halifax to Bradford.

Raising funds for the Islamic Relief charity, the group gathered in Halifax town centre on Sunday morning before running up the daunting ‘Queensbury Mountain’ and into the neighbouring city.

31-year-old Arfan Mir, who has organised the event for the past two years, said it was a great day, ‘despite the weather’ and was confident of reaching the £5,000 target.

Amongst those who completed the run was Arfan’s grandfather, running for a second time following last year’s event, alongside children still in primary school.

“Sunday was a big success with around 30 RUNNERS: Around 30 people took part in the challenging people, of all ages, coming down to complete the 10km run last week in aid of the Islamic Relief charity challenge,” Arfan said.

Frustration over new LBA parking charges The cost of parking at Yorkshire’s largest airport increased 50 per cent last week leaving drivers ‘disappointed’ with the new ‘kiss and fly’ charges.

Parking outside Leeds Bradford Airport’s main terminal building will now cost drivers £3 for up to thirty minutes instead of the previous price of £2.

One-hundred free parking spaces have been allocated at the bottom of the airport where people can park for

up to 60 minutes without charge, which a spokesperson for the airport said was an alternative option.

“Leeds Bradford Airport has introduced a dedicated 100 spaces ‘Free One Hour Parking Zone’ located in the premium Mid Stay Car Park area a short three to four minutes walk from the main terminal entrance,” a spokesman from the airport said.

“The facility is clearly signposted on entering the airport, and benefits from

However, everyday drivers and cabbies have voiced their concern at a rise in prices which makes the LBA one of the most expensive in the country.

Simon Bull, a local private hire vehicle driver with SJK Cars, says the prices are an ‘unneeded expense’ for passengers when simply dropping them off at the airport.

He explained: “At Manchester Airport, you can drop off passengers for free outside any of the three terminals.

“There is then a £2.90 charge for ‘pick ups’ which is understandable as you may be waiting for customers or helping them with their bags.

“At Leeds, it costs £6 to do a drop-off and pick up. If I have an elderly passenger in the car or a person with a disability, the only way they can avoid paying an extra £3 is by parking in the free car park quite a distance from the terminal building.

“When it’s raining and windy, which it often is here, the conditions are just not appropriate to be walking all that way in.”

Mr Bull added that due to a private taxi rank operating from inside the airport, he believes that the new prices will affect external firms unfairly.

Emily Halliday, an operator with the same taxi rank, said she had already received calls from customers complaining about the new prices.

Score one for charity Budding football stars from a Bradford school shot past the goal of raising £600 for a local charity last month, marking the 30-year anniversary of the city’s worst sporting disaster.

Boys and girls from St Matthews CE Primary laced up their football boots in February to take part in a sponsored penalty shoot-out in aid of the Bradford Burns Unit.

The event, held in the school hall involving children from reception through to Year 6, had been organised to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Bradford City Fire Disaster.

On 11th May 1985, 56 people lost their lives and 258 were injured as a stand at Valley Parade went up in flames. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the burns unit was established.

Last week, on Thursday 26th February, a cheque for £620 was handed over to Bantams player, Filipe Morais, and Jing Tay, from the Burns Unit, on behalf of the school.

Head teacher Bob Curran said it was the second time pupils had raised money for the unit and were proud to be involved during the anniversary year.

Bulbs brighten up residential garden Green-fingered youth sowing seeds of friendship

The relationship between Dewsbury’s young Muslim population and a residential home in the area is ‘blossoming’ following the latest successful gardening initiative.

Members of the Kumon Y’all group have been working in the areas of Saville Town and Thornhill for well over a year as they attempt to build up community cohesion in their local towns.

Last week, during half-term, teenagers from the group visited Charlesworth Court Retirement Home to plant bulbs in the complex’s garden and hand over indoor plants to some of the residents.

After receiving the gardening equipment from a local supermarket during their Bocha event the previous weekend, the youth decided to donate them to a ‘worthy home’.

Project leader at Kumon Y’all, Farook Yunus, explained: “During our event the previous week, we were donated some bulbs and plants from the local Sainsbury’s store.

“Immediately we knew where we were going to take them and so during the boys’ half-term last week, we headed down to Charlesworth Court.

“They were greatly appreciated by the residents who all had massive smiles on their faces when we arrived.

That is what makes it all worthwhile for us and we want to continue arranging these sorts of projects to benefit the

he recent case of Chandhok and another –v- Tirkey suggests that discrimination on the grounds of caste can now amount to an aspect of race discrimination prohibited by British discrimination law.

‘Caste’ is not currently a ‘protected characteristic’ in which discrimination is illegal under the Equality Act 2010 (“the Act”). However, the appellate Court in this case have controversially interpreted the Act to include ‘caste’ as an aspect of ‘race’ discrimination despite the Act explicitly requiring that an Order must be passed by a Government Minister to do this.

Furthermore, a full public consultation by Parliament is currently underway to identify any specific issues that need to be addressed and prepare guidance on prospective caste discrimination for the law to be effective. Caste discrimination is unlikely to be prohibited under the Act until at least summer 2015.

In this case, Ms Tirkey worked as a domestic worker. Her caste is the Christian Adivasi, which is recognised as being the lowest point of almost every socio-economic indicator, akin to the Dalits, the so-called ‘untouchables’. Ms Tirkey claimed that Mr and Mrs Chandok had subjected her to discrimination due to her low caste status. Her claim involved £175,000 in unpaid wages. She worked extremely long hours with only one day off in the total four years she worked there.

Mr and Mrs Chandok argued that ‘caste’ did not fall within the definition of ‘race’ discrimination and the fact that Parliament had not yet activated their power to amend the Act to include ‘caste’ was a clear indication that ‘caste’ was deliberately omitted.

The Judge however held that there was no comprehensive and exhaustive

definition of ‘race’ provided by the Act, and found authority in previous case law that discrimination on the grounds of descent was in fact race discrimination. As Ms Tirkey’s caste was inherited and immutable (and therefore established by her descent) it came within the protected characteristic of ‘race’ under the Act. Without any set legislation and guidance in place, this could open up the floodgates for litigation to determine a number of issues. To begin with, there is considerable uncertainty as to the precise definition and boundaries of ‘caste’ with some caste considerations involving no element of ‘descent’. The term ‘caste’ used to identify a number of different concepts, notably varna (a Hindu religious caste system), jati (an occupational caste system) and biraderi (often referred to as a clan system).

Not only will this case lead to implications in the employment field, the case could lead to all kinds of civil actions, such as compensation to injury of feelings; aggravated damages for malicious behaviour; and claims for discrimination in the provision of services.

Without any coherent basis on which to base discrimination on the grounds of caste, it is uncertain what organisations have to do to protect themselves against claims of discrimination and whether certain traditions such as holding an event for Navratri will be classed as discrimination.

Those who were expecting a radical statement of new law will be disappointed as this decision could make new legislation unnecessary.

However, to provide certainty and acquire organisations to implement sufficient measures, the Government may still need to define the scope of caste discrimination.

TRAGIC: Ayesha Ali was the victim of ‘horrific levels of mental abuse’ at the hands of her mother and her partner

Two jailed for ‘wicked’ manslaughter of child

Mother and lesbian lover found guilty over daughter’s death

A 35-year-old woman and her sadistic lover who created an online fantasy world have been convicted of killing her eight-year-old daughter.

The girl's mother Polly Chowdhury, 35, and lover Kiki Muddar were convicted of her manslaughter, but cleared of murder, and sentenced to 13 years and 18 years in prison respectively on Friday 6th March.

When police arrived at the family's east London flat in August 2013, they found little Ayesha Ali dead and her mother having tried to commit suicide. Ayesha had more than 50 injuries on her body.

A note, written by the mother, confessed to killing Ayesha by smothering her with a pillow and also declared her love for a man named ‘Jimmy’.

The Old Bailey heard that Chowdhury’s partner, 43-year-old Muddar, of Green Lane, Ilford, used Facebook updates and text messages to poison Chowdhury against her own daughter.

Officers sifted through more than 100,000 texts, social media messages and interactions to untangle a complicated cast of characters, the jury heard.

One alias Muddar created was spiritual guide ‘Skyman’, whom she used to convince Chowdhury into believing that Ayesha had ‘bad blood’ and needed to be disciplined to get the ‘evil spirits’ out of her.

Through a combination of painstaking investigation, technical know-how and determination over 18 months, police managed to prove none of them existed.

The jury also heard how, throughout their relationship, Muddar told Chowdhury that Ayesha was ‘evil’ and bombarded her with more than 40,000 texts with messages such as: “You have no right to ever love or like your evil

“In all my years as a police officer I have never come across a case of this nature. It took us months to unpick and investigate the web of lies that Kiki Muddar had constructed.” daughter.”

Muddar even blamed Ayesha for making her fictional cancer worse.

In a recorded phone conversation with a friend the month before the killing, Muddar described Ayesha as ‘pure evil’ and a ‘witch’ and threatened to drown her in the bath.

Chowdhury, of Broomfield Road, Chadwell Heath, admitted during the case that after Muddar moved in with her, they smacked Ayesha and hit her because ‘Skyman’ told them to do so.

But Mr Whittam told the court a psychiatrist found that Muddar had

not been delusional in her actions and understood what she was doing.

Prosecutor Richard Whittam QC told the court Ayesha endured a ‘background of prolonged abuse’ and some ‘might call it torture’ because Muddar had a ‘disgust’ for the child.

“She was rational in her judgments in having a disgust with Ayesha. She did not like Polly Chowdhury putting Ayesha above her interests,” he said.

“However immoral, abhorrent and illegal her judgment, it was rational... there is no question of either defendant having been mad.”

The court heard Muddar befriended Chowdhury when they lived next door to each other in 2007 and she got sympathy by pretending she had cancer.

Chowdhury's husband Afsar Ali moved the family to get away from her influence, but Muddar eventually tracked them down, prompting the breakdown of their marriage.

Speaking to the media, Mr Ali said that when he first met Kiki Muddar, she came across as an evil person to him straight away. He said that she would avoid speaking with him and believes that Muddar influenced his wife in his absence.

Post-mortem examinations revealed Ayesha died as a result of damage to the head from a blow or blows, on 29th August 2013.

She had other injuries including carpet burns and a bite mark from her mother.

Det Insp Donna Convery said: “It took us months to unpick and investigate the web of lies that Kiki Muddar had constructed.

“In the six months before her death, Ayesha was subjected to horrific levels of mental abuse, which during the summer holidays escalated to become physical.

“She was an innocent child who was caught up in the most bizarre set of events, manipulated by two adults who were intent on causing her harm.”

Heartache Legal challenge dismissed on Britain’s visa law requirement for British half of couple to earn more than £18,600

The Court of Appeal’s dismissal of a legal challenge to Home Office rules for UK citizens who want their overseas spouses to live with them in Britain, has caused uproar.

Affecting more than 3,600 families, the immigration law requires the British half of a couple to earn more than £18,600 before they can apply for their non EU partner to join them in Britain.

The visa applications of 3,641 families have been on hold since 5th July last year while the appeal court ruled on the legality of a new Home Office minimum income threshold of £18,600 for sponsoring a foreign spouse. The appeal court ruling is expected to clear the way for the Home Office to refuse most of those applications.

Campaigners say that many thousands more families who were put off from applying by the £18,600 income threshold since it was introduced in 2012 will also be affected. They say that the families who remain separated include British citizens in fulltime employment on the minimum wage who are too poor to enjoy the right to a family life.

Ruth Grove-White, policy director of the Migrants' Rights Network, which has been campaigning for the right of British citizens to have their family life respected, said: "This judgment will be devastating for the families who continue to be needlessly separated across borders. Many UK residents and British citizens have had their lives put on hold for over a year, often with no chance of seeing their loved husbands, wives or children during that time."

Grove-White said that almost half the working population of

Britain earned less than the required £18,600. "These rules are a shocking infringement of the right to family life. Being able to start a family in your own country should not be subject to the amount of money you make."

The appeal court ruling followed a legal challenge by the home secretary, Theresa May, to a high court judgment last July, which said the £18,600 was "onerous" and "unjustified".

Mr Justice Blake then ruled that the financial requirements amounted to "a disproportionate interference with a genuine spousal relationship" and suggested that a threshold of £13,400, which was more in line with the national minimum wage, would be more appropriate.

But the three appeal court judges said that his analysis and conclusion that the income rules breached the human rights of the British husbands, wives or partners was not correct, so the rules were lawful.

The case was brought on behalf of two British citizens, Abdul Majid and Shabana Javed, who both live in Birmingham and a refugee, MM, who has the right to remain in Britain, who are married to spouses who live outside Europe.

Lord Justice Aikens, one of the three appeal court judges, said he was very conscious of the evidence submitted that only 301 of the 422 occupations listed in the 2011 UK earnings data had annual average earnings over £18,600.

"But, given the work that was done on behalf of the secretary of state to analyse the effect of the immigration of non-European Economic Area partners and dependent children on the benefits system, the level of income needed to minimise dependence on the state for families where non-EEA partners enter the UK, and what I regard

as a rational conclusion on the link between better income and greater chances of integration, my conclusion is that the secretary of state's judgment cannot be impugned,” he said.

"She has discharged the burden of demonstrating that the interference was both the minimum necessary and strikes a fair balance between the interests of the groups concerned and the community in general."

The judge said it was not up to the court to impose its own view on what the minimum income threshold should be, unless it was irrational, unjust or unfair.

A Home Office impact assessment published in June 2012 estimated that the chosen income threshold would prevent 17,800 family visas being granted every year.

The Home Office has staunchly defended their policy, and did so in the Court of Appeal earlier this month, justifying the financial requirement as being part of an effort to help immigrants to integrate.

The immigration minister, James Brokenshire, said he was delighted by the appeal court ruling: "We welcome those who wish to make a life in the UK with their family, work hard and make a contribution, but family life must not be established in the UK at the taxpayer's expense and family migrants must be able to integrate.”

The changes that came into force on 9th July 2012 stipulate that the British spouse has to earn an annual income of £18,600 (and show that he/she has been earning that amount for at least six months) in order to sponsor his/her non-EEA spouse for a visa. The foreign spouse’s income is not taken into account. The financial threshold increases if they have children also in need of sponsorship.

Prime Minister vows to introduce new laws to disrupt Brits flying to join extremists The search for three British teenagers, who left their London homes last month to join up with the Islamic State in Syria, have crossed the border to the war-torn nation, Sky Sources report.

Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and Amira Abase, 15, are believed to be staying in the town of Al-Raqqa, with a British host who the group had contacted before their departure.

Last week the girls were seen in CCTV footage boarding a coach in Turkey and it is from there that they are believed to have crossed over into Syria.

All three girls, students at Bethnal Green Academy, London, had not told their parents where they were travelling having said they were just meeting friends on the day.

In response to the latest update, Britain looked set to introduce new laws on Tuesday which would attempt to stop airlines carrying passengers who they believe to be at risk of joining IS militants in Iraq and Syria.

Security services estimate that around 600 Britons have travelled

to the two nations to join militant groups, with no legislation currently in place to stop the passengers.

Under the proposed new laws, Home Secretary Theresa May

would be able to prevent airlines from carrying passengers, including children, believed to be travelling to take part in ‘terrorism-related activity’ on known routes, such as

Turkish Airlines (THYAO.IS) has previously said it was helping a government investigation into the case but that it was only responsible for checking visas.

Helping parents protect children from extremism online

A new website, aimed at giving parents the tools and information they need to be able to spot the signs that their child is being targeted by extremists, was launched last week following the news of three London girls fleeing to Syria.

The website, www.familiesmatter.org.uk, has been developed by UKbased organisation Families Against Stress and Trauma (FAST), which provides support to vulnerable families and individuals at risk of radicalisation.

In light of the three teenager’s well-publicised disappearance last month, this ‘real threat’ was reinforced with their families, friends and teachers all unaware of such plans.

FAST hopes that by using real case studies and providing expert advice, that parents will be empowered to intervene well before their children

even consider travelling to join extremist groups such as IS. Saleha Jaffer, founder of the organisation, said: “Enough is enough. We can no longer sit by and watch as children from across the country are stolen from families by the lies and false-promises made by extremists.

“As parents it is important that we take responsibility and play our part in stopping children travelling to Iraq or Syria, which is in most cases a oneway ticket, to join perpetrators of the most evil and heinous crimes.

“It is vital that we understand the risks our children face and are able to engage with them in order to have a frank and honest two-way conversation about this complicated subject.

“The information on our new website, www.familiesmatter.org.uk aims to give parents the

tools and a better understanding of the issues and how they can help their children if needed.”

To support the launch of the new site, FAST and its Families Matter campaign is embarking on a series of national community visits across the UK, to reach out to parents and families to empower them through a series of workshops, film showcases and one-to-one advice.

The first events will take place this month and will include East London, Leeds, Liverpool, Leicester, Luton and Stoke-on-Trent.

Saleha Jaffer, concluded: “I hope that through the new website and the messages and support we can offer on the national Families Matter tour, that parents feel less alone, less uncertain and more informed and empowered to do all they can to save their children before it is too late.”

A team of thirty Coventry and Birmingham locals joined forces to run the Coventry Half Marathon last weekend, raising thousands of pounds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The team, dubbed #TeamMesmerEyez, was spearheaded by Haroon Mota, a

Youth Support Coordinator who works on the Teenage Cancer Trust ward at University College Hospital in London.

The Coventry resident commutes to London for work every day and chose to support the charity because he knows how important it is to support young people with cancer so they don’t feel isolated.

The team of mainly novice runners completed the 13.1 mile race in Coventry on Sunday 1st March and raised more than £10,000 in total.

Destroying history IS militants target cultural sites in ‘catastrophic’ attack

The Islamic State have been accused of ‘defying the will of the world’ after militants attacked cultural landmarks across Iraq in videos uploaded to the internet in recent weeks.

In the initial footage at the country’s Mosul museum, statues are shown being smashed and pushed to the ground, whilst other items are hacked at with sledgehammers and drills.

Later, another group of militants are seen in bulldozers at the capital of the biblical kingdom of Assyria, Nimrud, where again antiquities are destroyed.

The country’s antiquities ministry slammed the actions of those involved in the destruction of attractions dating back more than 700 years.

“Daesh (IS) terrorist gangs continue to defy the will of the world and the feelings of humanity,” a statement read.

“In a new crime in their series of reckless offences they assaulted the ancient city of Nimrud and bulldozed it with heavy machinery,

appropriating the archaeological attractions dating back 13 centuries BC.” The extremists are reportedly targeting the sites as they claim that their interpretation of Islam calls for the statues and relics to be destroyed.

Despite this, there has been huge condemnation from Muslim clerics around the world.

As well as their ‘religious beliefs’, the group have also been stealing and looting artefacts which are then traded illegally as a way of funding the group’s activities.

The head of Unesco, the United Nations’ cultural organisation, Irina Bokova, said she had alerted the UN security council to the ‘catastrophe’.

“This is yet another attack against the Iraqi people, reminding us that

nothing is safe from the cultural cleansing underway in the country,” she said.

“It targets human lives, minorities, and is marked by the systematic destruction of humanity’s ancient heritage.”

Amongst the many items destroyed in the film footage, was a giant marble winged bull that previously formed part of the entrance gates to the city of Mosul. A similar model is also on display at the British Museum having been extricated a number of years ago.

In response to the attacks, Iraq reopened the National museum of Iraq which had been closed for the past 12 years since the US-led invasion in 2003.

Vibrant colours fill the sky, skin and clothes are turned every shade possible, and thousands flock to the streets to celebrate – it can all only mean one thing that Holi is upon us.

The holiday, also known as the festival of colour, was celebrated around the world last week with people heading to the streets to celebrate the picturesque occasion.

Despite being derived from Hindu tradition, it has become popular amongst many faiths across Asia and even extends across Europe with scenes of powder flying in the air seen on all continents.

Holi officially marks the coming of Spring arriving at the start of March and marked the night prior with the lighting of bonfires where small foods are thrown on by Hindu families.

The next day, people of all ages head to the streets to join in with the renowned event, smearing each other with paint and throwing coloured water and powder at each other.

The story of Holi and its beginnings come from Krishna and the legend of Holika and Prahlad.

It is believed by some that the Hindu deity, Krishna was a mischievous young boy and used to throw coloured powder during his youth.

Others state that it is to remember the story of a King and his son Prahlad. The king ordered everyone in the land to worship him however the prince opted to worship Lord Vishnu instead.

In an attempt to kill his son, he tricked him into sitting on the lap of his sister Holika – who was immune to fire – in a bonfire.

The prince emerged unharmed whilst Holika died as she used her powers for evil.

In some areas of India, effigies of Holika (where Holi could be derived from) are burned with the ashes seen as good luck.

Algeria criminalises violence against women Algeria's parliament passed a law on 5th March criminalising violence against women, in a move criticised by both Islamist lawmakers as well as Amnesty International.

The law makes inflicting injury on one's spouse punishable with up to 20 years in prison, and allows a judge to hand down life sentences for domestic violence resulting in death.

The bill passed in a vote attended by more than half of Algeria's 462 MPs, and the result drew the ire of some of the assembly's Islamists.

Abdelallah Djaballah of El Adala party said the new law "takes revenge on the husband and on the man in general", accusing the legislation of seeking to "break up the family".

In contrast, a deputy from the ruling National Liberation Front told AFP that Thursday was "a great day" following the adoption of the anti-violence measures.

Between 100 and 200 women die each year in instances of domestic violence in Algeria, according to statistics published by local media.

Amnesty International called for an amendment dropping a clause which allows the survivor of domestic violence to pardon the perpetrator, warning it was "a dangerous precedent".

"The provision fails to confront the reality of the power relations and inequality between men and women," it said.

"A failure to withdraw it could expose women who come forward to report domestic abuse to serious risks of violence or coercion to force them to withdraw a complaint."

Shooting victims to be remembered Dozens of government-run schools in Pakistan are set to be renamed after the students killed by Taliban militants last year at the army academy in Peshawar.

The school attack by six gunmen from the Pakistani Taliban killed 153 people, with most of the victims young pupils as well as members of staff.

FBI help in Bangladesh murder case

Investigation continues into death of secular blogger, killed by machete-wielding assailant

America’s top crime agency has been called in to help investigate the murder of an AmericanBangladeshi who was hacked to death in Dhaka last month.

Avijit Roy, an atheist blogger and engineer of Bangladeshi origin, was killed by machete-wielding assailants on Thursday 26th February as he returned from a book fair.

His wife, who also writes for the

blog, suffered serious injuries, including the loss of a finger and head injuries.

Despite the main suspect being detained by the nation’s authority, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has now been called in to help investigate the case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman, Monirul Islam, said: “An FBI team might come to Dhaka this week to assist in our investigations

of the killing of writer and blogger Avijit Roy.” Roy had allegedly received death threats before his trip to Bangladesh from Islamists, with one online statement posted two months before his arrival, calling for his murder.

Bangladesh's anti-terrorism unit said it had arrested the main suspect in the case, Farabi Shafiur Rahman, in Dhaka on Monday.

Rahman has been jailed in the

past for his ties to the extremist Hizbut Tahrir Islamist group and is reported to have confessed to the killing.

It is not the first time a secular blogger has been attacked in the South Asian nation.

In 2013, Muslim militants targeted several bloggers who had demanded capital punishment for Islamist leaders convicted of war crimes during Bangladesh's 1971 war for

independence.

One blogger, Ahmed Rajib Haider, was killed that year near his home in Dhaka after he led one such protest.

In 2004, secular writer and Dhaka University professor Humayun Azad was attacked while returning home from a Dhaka book fair and later died in Germany while undergoing treatment.

22 arrested after rape suspect killed

Mob storm prison in vigilante style attack A massive group attack in India has resulted in 22 people being arrested after a high-security prison was stormed and a rape suspect lynched in Nagaland, India.

Several thousand people in the state attacked the prison last week where they dragged the suspect out of the establishment and beat him to death before tying his body to the lock tower.

In the aftermath of the incident, protests were sparked across the region with police opting to implement a curfew to maintain the peace.

“Twenty-two people have been arrested for rioting and attacking the prison complex,” the state's top police officer L.L. Doungel told Reuters.

Protests regarding the lynching were seen across the state of Nagaland and neighbouring Assam on Saturday forcing authorities to put a freeze on internet and SMS phone messaging services after videos of the attack

surfaced.

Police said they were struggling to identify people directly involved in the murder of Syed Farid Khan, 35, who had been accused of raping a 19year-old Naga tribal woman multiple times.

Khan's brother linked the murder to ethnic tensions within Nagaland, whose indigenous groups have for decades accused a growing number of Muslim migrants from Bangladesh of illegally grabbing their fertile land.

The family accused police of falsely implicating Khan in the rape to try to root out Muslims from Nagaland.

The lynching also follows an outpouring of anger in India over violence against women.

Khan's lynching coincided with controversy over a government order to ban the broadcasting of a documentary about the fatal gang-rape in December 2012 of a young student in New Delhi that caused shock within India and around the world.

Search for missing airline ‘still on’ Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak, said on Sunday that the country remains committed to the search for the missing MH370 jetliner, a year after it vanished without trace.

A 584-page interim report into the disappearance of the Boeing 777-200ER provided details on how radars had tracked the plane going off course to issues concerning the battery of the flight data recorder's underwater locator beacon.

However it did not identify a definitive cause for the disappearance, adding there was nothing suspicious in the financial, medical or personal histories of pilots or crew.

Malaysian Airline MH370 vanished from radar screens shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, bound for Beijing, early on 8th March last year, becoming one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.

Investigators believe the

plane, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members, was flown thousands of miles off course before eventually crashing into the ocean off Australia.

A search for the missing jetliner along a rugged 60,000 sq km patch of sea floor some 1,600 km west of the Australian city of Perth has found nothing so far. The search in this area, which experts believe is the plane's most likely resting place, will likely be finished by

May. “The disappearance of MH370 is without precedent, and so too is the search - by far the most complex and technically challenging in aviation history,” Najib said in a statement.

“Together with our international partners, we have followed the little evidence that exists. Malaysia remains committed to the search, and hopeful that MH370 will be found.”

“So when something takes time to make, the result shows. I’m very happy the way the song has turned out,” said Jazzy.

Hrithik Roshan going NUDE for Ashutosh Gowariker’s film?

Heard the latest? Hrithik Roshan, the Greek god of Bollywood who plays main lead in upcoming biggie ‘Mohenjo Daro’ from renowned filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, is expected to go nude for a sequence, a la Aamir Khan in Raj Kumar Hirani’s ‘PK’.

The buzz doing the rounds in the industry is that Hrithik Roshan’s act of going for bare minimum may be something more than Aamir Khan, who had gone out of his way for ‘PK’.

The buzz has already sent the temperatures soaring in the industry about Mohenjo Daro and Hrithik Roshan’s’ female fan following is going ga ga over it. Of course, they

do not want this mouth-watering prospect of seeing their matinee idol nude on the celluloid go away.

But reality is slightly different. In fact, nudity is only part true. Hrithik Roshan is going to don a bare minimum for some sequences (now, you can take that to be almost nude) in Mohenjo Daro and it’s a fact.

In fact, the film depicts the life and culture of Harappa Civilization, which existed around 2500 BC in and around the Mohenjo Daro area of Sindh and Gujarat. At that particular time in history, there was hardly anything called fashion industry.

In general, the people wore cloths to hide their private parts and

nothing more than that. That automatically comes to being in almost nude. Hrithik Roshan, who is essaying the character of that era in the film, will similarly don garments of that era.

Now, it is during one of those sequences that that Hrithik Roshan will be donning the bare minimum, which can come to being almost nude. Then, there is censor board factor too.

It is not entirely in the hands of filmmakers to depict the scene in its brutality or reality and they will have to take into account the permissibility of the same from the board.

Rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear limited slip differential increase agility and dynamics, and the wider front and rear track widths enable even higher roll stability than in the 911 GT3.

In addition, the 911 GT3 RS features the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard. The result: even

more agile turn-in characteristics and even higher cornering speeds.

The interior design of the 911 GT3 RS with Alcantara elements is based on the current 911 GT3.

Another key feature are the sports seats, which are now based on the carbonfibre ‘bucket’ seats of the 918 Spyder super sports car. Other standard features are the Club Sport Package with a bolted-in roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and a separately provided six-point safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket.

The optional Sport Chrono Package features – in addition to its integrated timers – the Porsche Track Precision app for a smartphone. The Track Precision app can be used to have lap times automatically measured via GPS, and to log data on a smartphone for many driving parameters such as vehicle speed, lateral acceleration as well as acceleration and deceleration in the driving direction.

It manages this data and lets the driver share and compare it with other drivers.

Standard equipment includes biXenon headlights, sports exhaust, dynamic engine mounts, Alcantara interior trim, sports bucket seats, 20inch diameter front and 21-inch diameter rear centre-lock forged alloy wheels, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV) with rear limited slip differential, CDR audio system with 7-inch colour touchscreen, universal audio interface offering MP3 connectivity, automatic climate control, Porsche Stability Management (PSM), Porsche Vehicle Tracking anti-theft system, three-year warranty and three-year roadside assistance package.

Infiniti reveals QX30 concept Infiniti signalled further intentions to grow in the premium compact segment with the world premiere of the QX30 Concept at the Geneva International Motor Show.

The QX30 concept is Infiniti’s design vision for a new premium compact crossover, targeting at a new generation of individualistic premium customers.

Bringing together the sleek lines of the coupe with the command sitting and allwheel drive of a crossover, the QX30 Concept promises to be just as capable navigating city streets as it is exploring weekend getaways.

“With the QX30 Concept, we’re showcasing a distinctively contemporary alternative in the premium compact segment for those who want something more than the status quo,” said Roland Krueger, Infiniti President and CEO. An international team designed the QX30 Concept to appeal to the global customer. Complementing the vehicle’s higher stance, the designers added visual cues which instantly identify the concept as a crossover such as 21-inch wheels, large tyres, lower bumper, sculpted skid plates, and very distinctive roof racks.

unexpected way, and given functional elements an artistic twist,” said Albaisa.

The McLaren 675LT, which made its global debut at the 85th International Geneva Motor Show, will be the lightest, most powerful and fastest model in the McLaren Super Series, and also the most exclusive: production will be strictly limited to just 500 examples worldwide.

The limited production model, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, has a clear focus on light weight, optimised aerodynamics, increased power, track-focused dynamics and driver engagement.

At its core is the lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, shared with each model in the Super Series, but the chassis set up and powertrain are bespoke, with a third of overall parts and components modified.

A more aggressive set up gives the 675LT a unique track-focused

feel, while still retaining the adjustable ProActive Chassis Control to ensure drivability and comfort levels are maintained.

One of the many updates featured on the 1997 McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ was a wider track, front and rear. This approach is echoed in the 675LT, with the front and rear track widened by 20mm, ensuring optimised stability and handling performance.

Lightweight springs front and rear have been stiffened – 27 percent at the front and 63 percent at the rear – to improve body control and allow for the 40 percent increase in downforce generated by the revised bodywork and active aerodynamics.

Newly-developed suspension geometry includes lightweight uprights and wishbones based on the learnings from the McLaren P1™. This is coupled with a faster

steering rack to give a more extreme driver-focused experience.

The obsession with weight saving sees the 675LT tip the scales at just 1,230kg (dry weight), making it the lightest model in the already lightweight Super Series, with a saving of more than 100kg. This has been achieved with the use of lighter weight components. For example, the changes to the car’s glazing alone save 4.5kg with a thinner windscreen and rear bulkhead glass, and replacing the engine cover with motorsport-style polycarbonate.

The 675LT uses the familiar seven-speed SSG transmission

found in the other Super Series models, retaining the Normal, Sport or Track modes. These settings have been recalibrated to produce more eager performance, with optimised throttle response and gearshifts up to twice as fast as previously offered.

The newly developed ‘Ignition Cut’ technology is a technique adopted from Formula 1™ which sees a momentary cut of the fuel spark on gearshift. This delivers the fastest change possible, and is accompanied by a dramatic aural ‘crack’ on both upshift and downshift.

Also debuting on the 675LT is an all-new Electronic Stability Control

(ESC) calibration, giving the driver an even greater level of control over the throttle and brake inputs.

The 675LT unveiled to world’s automotive media gathered in Geneva was finished in the newly launched Chicane Grey, showcasing the McLaren Club Sport pack. This option, priced at £5,090 for the UK market, is designed with an even greater focus on track driving, and includes titanium roll hoop with four point harnesses and a fire extinguisher.

The limited edition McLaren 675LT will be available to buyers, priced from £259,500. Deliveries will commence from July 2015.

Willson also hammered away the first ever lot, a 1951 Land Rover Series 1; for a winning bid of £5,035 including premium.

The highest selling car on the day was an incredibly rare Riviera Blue 2001 Porsche 911 (996) Turbo, which fetched a total of £30,740, more than £4,000 over its lower estimate. Close behind was a rare and sought after 2001 Morgan Aero 8, selling for a premium inclusive £27,030. Wowing the crowds was a last of the line 2001 Other highlight cars sold included a Rover Mini Cooper with just 182 miles 2000 Jaguar XKR Silverstone; one of on the clock. The last to be sold in just 50 ever made. The car had just Scotland, the time warp car sold for 54,000 miles on its clock and sold for £16,854 including premium. £20,140. Last season’s League Cup winner, OBB, will have been happy to take away a point from the encounter and extend their unbeaten run at the start of the season to four games.

On this occasion, NFA may have had the better chances overall but a goalless draw is usually a fair result when these two sides meet.

Jackhammer FC 1-0 Super Six

A single goal was enough for Jackhammer FC to register their second win of the season as they defeated a Super Six side still looking for their first point this campaign.

Shoaib Hussain scored the only goal of the game to clinch all three points for the league’s new boys who climb up to sixth spot with the win.

Chances fell to both teams during the contest with Wasim Rashid coming close on a couple of occasions for Super Six. Sukhy Singh and Adil Zeb were also testing the keeper at the other end of the pitch before the breakthrough finall came from a powerful strike by Hussain in the first half.

Super Six began the latest season full of optimism after a strong end to the 2014/15 campaign yet sit bottom of the table with just one point from four games.

Jackhammer meanwhile have quickly found their feet and following their win over NFA last week, look set to enjoy a successful season.

It was back to business as usual for Hyde Park on Thursday as they breezed past Al Aqs by two goals to nil.

Dominating much of the game, last season’s champions registered their first win of the season, having drawn all three previous matches.

Goals from Muhammed Solomen and the everconsistent Tyler Bussue were enough to seal the win and bring their opponents crashing back down to earth having won their last two.

Al-Aqs did have some chances yet the quality of the opposition was just too strong and they slip back down to seventh following the result.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK Shazad Hussain has been in inspirational form so far this season helping to guide Tetley’s Tino to the top of the Soccer League table after four games.

Tetley’s Tino were a mid-table team at best last season yet have started the latest campaign in incredible form to sit top of the pile after four games.

Their latest 1-0 victory over Team NewBees is their third of the campaign, and a fourth clean sheet in a row as their defence is yet to be breached.

They are already being tipped to be serious challengers for the title this year and with performances like this, it is clear to see why.

Following a number of chances and fine football, it was Ismail Malik who finally found the back of the net.

Playing a perfect one-two with to split open the NewBees defence, Malik calmly slotted past the keeper into the corner of the net.

NewBees have had a difficult start to the campaign, picking up one point from four games and are yet to register their first goal.

Carl Frampton is a super bantamweight boxer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is 28 years old, 5ft 5inches in height and is currently the undefeated IBF world champion. Frampton boxing record consists of 20 impressive wins with 14 knockout victories and no loses.

Frampton has been in the ring with some very good fighters and beaten them all in a one sided contest and that includes the world’s top super bantamweights boxers like Gavin Reid, Raul Hirales, Steve Molitor, Kiko Martinez and Hugo Fidel Cazares (to name a few).

On Saturday night Frampton managed to retain his IBF bantamweight title with a fifth round stoppage of mandatory challenger Chris Avalos (25-2-0) in front the his home crowd in Belfast.

The Frampton and Avalos boxing bout was live on terrestrial television ITV who are making a boxing comeback of their own and who aired a boxing bout the first time in almost seven years.

The retired Belfast boxing legend Barry McGuigan who has guided Frampton career from the start believes Frampton is arguably the best super bantamweight in the world.

He believes that Frampton would manage to beat the current elite fighters in the division and that includes British rival Scott Quigg (30-0-2 with 22KO), Leo Santa Cruz (29-0-1 with 17KO) and the man

currently ranked one of the best in the in the world pound for pound Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0-0 with 10KO).

Quigg who was present at the Frampton and Avalos fight as a spectator believes that he will be able to fight Frampton later on this year and believes he has the tools to defeat him.

The Quigg vs Frampton bout would be a British blockbuster in the UK and would be held in a football stadium due to the British rivalry between the two fighters.

Frampton said the following after the Avalos fight in response to Quigg’s fight challenge “"I would love it. I think Scott wants it; it's a summer showdown between the both of us. It's a massive fight but Scott needs to remember who the real world champion is… I would leave Belfast if I had to. Maybe somewhere neutral, it doesn't matter to me. I think Scott would agree with me. It's the biggest fight in the UK [other than] Amir Khan-Kell Brook possibly, but I think this one's been brewing a lot longer. It's a huge domestic showdown."

Frampton who has faced his own demons inside and outside of the ring in terms of the Irish Protestants and Catholic problems believes through his boxing he can become a “force of unity” like his Irish predecessor and Manager Mcguigan.

Frampton is already the people’s champion especially in Ulster, Ireland and will soon become a household name should he manage to achieve world domination and beat his boxing rivals.

I personally have followed Frampton’s career for some time and strongly believe he has the boxing ingredients to become one of the legends of the ring.

However even though the Frampton fight against Quigg and Cruz are mouther watering prospects I believe Frampton will overcome them challenges and set up a mega fight with the evenly matched Rigondeaux.

The highly anticipated start and finish times for the Tour de Yorkshire were finally announced last week, along with the precise location details of the race starts and finishes.

The major international cycling race will be held between 1st and 3rd May with the routes for the three days taking the event through some of the county’s most spectacular scenery.

The routes were announced in Bridlington earlier this year and now the race organisers, Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sport Organisation based in France, have announced the timings and details of the location starts and finishes.

Stage one from Bridlington to Scarborough will have a ceremonial start at 11.45am on South Marine Drive outside the Bridlington Spa. Riders will have a 5km neutralised section before the official race start at Sewerby at 12noon.

Depending on rider’s speed the race will finish between 4pm and 4.30pm on Royal Albert Drive in Scarborough.

Key timings for stage one include Dalby Forest King of the Mountain climb at approximately 1.15pm, a sprint through Pickering at approximately 1.40pm, Rosedale Abbey King of the Mountain climb at approximately 2.08pm, Grosmont King of the Mountain climb at approximately 2.52pm, the

Whitby Sprint at around 3.09pm and the finish in Scarborough between 4pm and 4.30pm depending on the speed of the riders.

Stage two, from Selby to York, will have a ceremonial start at 11.20am outside Selby Abbey. Riders will have an 8km neutralised section before the official race start just outside Selby on the A163 at 11.45am. Depending on riders’ speed, the race will finish between 3.30pm and 4pm on Knavesmire Road in York.

Key points in stage two include the race reaching North Newbald King of the Mountain climb at approximately 12.30pm, the Wetwang Sprint at approximately 1.23pm, Fimber King of the Mountain climb at approximately 1.29pm with the York Sprint and first crossing of the finish line, ahead of two laps of the City at approximately 2.40pm Stage three, from Wakefield to Leeds, will start at 12.15pm outside Wakefield Cathedral.

Riders will have a 4km neutralised section before the official race start at Agbrigg Road on the A61 at 12.30pm.

Depending on riders’ speed the race will finish between 4.30pm and 5pm at Roundhay Park in Leeds.Key points in stage three include the race reaching the Holmfirth King of the Mountain climb at approximately 1.28pm, Scapegoat King of the Mountain climb at approximately 1.51pm Hebden Bridge King of the Mountain climb at approximately 2.48pm, Goose Eye King of the Mountain climb at approximately 3.11pm, the Ilkley Sprint at approximately 3.39pm, the Cow & Calf King of the Mountain climb at approximately 3.42pm, Chevin King of the Mountain climb at approximately 3.59pm, and the final Arthington Sprint before the finish in Leeds at approximately 4.12pm.

Yorkshire Champions Young boxers cement their place at top of sport

Two up-and-coming boxers from Bradford were officially recognised as the county’s ‘best’ this past week after clinching the Yorkshire Championships in their respected categories.

Subhaan Ahmed and Callum Grace, both fighting out of Dewsbury-based KBW boxing club, picked up the titles in the 46kg and 48kg events, overcoming all who stood in their way.

In the final on Sunday, Ahmed faced off against Hull’s Naseem Stowell in what was being

tipped as a close contest before the first bell even rang.

However, it was the local competitor who got the better of his opponent in the early exchanges, outboxing Stowell and drawing blood in the first round.

Bleeding from his nose, Stowell was forced into a standing eight count during the second round and the matchup had to be stopped at one point to wipe away the blood.

A similar story in the final round saw Ahmed continue his domination, resulting in his arm

being raised at the final bell and triumphing with a unanimous decision.

Victory earned the young ace his first Yorkshire Championship, as he prepares for a promising 2015.

Meanwhile, club-mate Grace, took on Liam Riley, of St Pauls Boxing Academy, in the final of the 48kg event and was able to mirror the success of Ahmed.

Triumphing in all three rounds against a tough opponent, Grace secured victory and his third Yorkshire Junior title.

Gym, said each competitor deserved to win their respected categories and was excited for thie future in the sport.

“Both boxers have progressed massively since joining KBW and the club has grown from strength to strength making a reputation in the field of amateur boxing,” he said.

“Under the watchful eye of acclaimed coach, Martin Bateson, we have established a growing and successful team of boxers from places as far away as Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford.”

Back page story continued The Appleton Academy student took up the sport almost eight years ago after accompanying a friend, who had been bought lessons for her birthday, to her first session.

Despite that friend dropping out, Harleen continued to attend the classes and soon built up a passion for martial arts which is as strong today as it was on day one.

She now trains three days a week at Legend’s Gym, Queensbury, and says she is determined to get more girls into the sport.

“Karate has made me a mentally stronger person, as well as physically, as I have learnt a lot through this journey which is still ongoing,” she said.

“However, the participation of girls is not enough. There are only two or three of us at the moment in my club and it is something I really think more girls should get involved with.

“It’s definitely not a ‘boy’s sport’ and teaches you so much.

“Self defence and discipline have been two of the most significant things I have learnt which can be applied to almost any situation.

“I have built my confidence through the years and have the courage and ability to tackle almost any type of challenge in my life.”

In April, Harleen will compete in both the North England and European Karate Championships where she is hopeful of picking up even more medals.

Instructor, Jason Murray, added that Harleen is a ‘model student’ and a ‘fantastic example’ of what women can achieve through martial arts.

“Harleen started with us when she was just eight-years-old and she never misses a class,” he said.

“For somebody to achieve what she has at such a young age is very rare but she is a fantastic example to all students and especially girls.

“Only about a third of our students are girls at the moment and it should be much higher.”

All conquering Qais Leeds’ Qais Ashfaq continued his impressive career as a British Lionheart last week as he overcame Mexico Guerrero’s Brian Gonzalez with a unanimous point’s decision.

The bantamweight competitor was on top form in a closely fought contest yet edged out his opponent to take his career record as a Lionheart to two wins and a single defeat.

Writing on social media after the game, Ashfaq posted: “Mexicans came to fight and were tough but we got the win.

“All praise to Allah for the win on a good performance and for keeping us all safe. Love to everyone that came - learning each and every day and improving all the time.”

Ashfaq’s only defeat to date with the squad came at the end of January when Morocco Atlas Lions registered a 3-2 victory over the Lionhearts.

The 22-year-old will next be in action on 12th March at York Hall, Bethnal Green, as the Brits face off
