900 Gifts delivered for Eid Give a Gift helps put smiles on children’s faces

GIVING: Give a Gift ambassador, Rifhat Malik, delivers a toy to baby Daniel, with Monika and Tracy

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A record number of toys were delivered to two charities across Leeds earlier this week as the great Give a Gift Toy Appeal returned ‘bigger and better than ever’. Set up in 2013 as a charitable concept, Give a Gift is targeted at getting British Muslims to ‘give back’ to their local communities, with the toy appeal acting as the flagship event whereby toys are collected throughout the month of Ramadan. Earlier this week, on Monday

20th July, volunteers were finally able to hand-deliver the gifts to children at Martin House Children’s Hospice and the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund at Leeds General Infirmary to coincide with the Eid celebrations. The 900 toys collected this year is a record amount for the volunteer-run project, following on from the 800 donated in 2014 and 500 in 2013. Sharon Coyle, Chief Executive at the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, said it was

‘mind-blowing’ to see so many gifts arrive at the hospital’s doors last weekend. “It means a great deal to us,” she said. “Not only do we receive these gifts but we have built up a fantastic relationship with this community that is really important to us. “Twenty-six per cent of our

children come from the South Asian population, and it’s fabulous to be able to communicate with this community in the way which we do. That’s really important to us and evident in that, year-on-year, the monetary support and toy support has only increased.” She continued: “Friday was just mind-blowing. We saw a big transit van pull up outside absolutely full of toys which was quite overwhelming.” With so many toys donated to the Heart Surgery Fund this year, gifts were also handed to children on separate wards at the Leeds General Infirmary. As well as collecting over twothousand toys in just over two years, the Give a Gift team have also raised £30,000 through separate events with funds donated to the two charities. Rifhat Malik, Give a Gift Ambassador, is one of the volunteers who helps spearhead the project every year and was on hand to help distribute the toys earlier this week. After seeing a record number of toys handed out on the wards, she said: “It’s been amazing. “It really is overwhelming to see the support behind this campaign and I can’t thank everyone enough. All the volunteers have put so much time and effort into it. “We do this project to put smiles on the childrens’ faces and I think the parents are sort of taken aback when we are delivering the gifts. “It just makes it more worthwhile and makes us more determined to keep on supporting them.”

Get on your bike this summer

The school holidays will soon be upon us, the time when children and young people are looking to fill weeks of entertainment. Luckily British Cycling, in partnership with Calderdale Council, is running a number of organised, free bike rides across the borough, with rides for all ages and abilities. These Sky Ride Local bike rides are led by British Cycling trained Ride Leaders, and take place every Sunday, right through the school holidays. All the rides have age guides and levels from Easygoing to the more advanced Challenging rides, so it’s simple to discover the perfect ride for you. To find out more about these, or any other Sky Rides and to book a place visit www.goskyride.com and search for races in your local area.

Race clean up

The time taken to clean up Leeds’ streets after yesterday’s 10K race rivalled times posted by some of the events top runners. The council’s street cleaning crews were out in force before, during and after the Asda Foundation Jane Tomlinson Run for all Leeds 10K to ensure that the thousands of runners, organisers, volunteers and spectators could enjoy a clean and safe race. This year, the crews picked up around 1.5 tonnes of waste along the route and collected numerous items of racing gear left behind by runners. Items will be held for two weeks and if not claimed will be donated to charity to be re-used or recycled.

Non-invasive device could change lives for diabetes sufferers

SMART: Professor Gin Jose, from the University of Leeds, shows the Glucosense Monitor which could revolutionise the way people monitor their diabetes

Pioneering technology developed in Leeds By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

There is no getting away from the fact that Diabetes is a very real issue in the UK for the Asian population, with the demographic six times more likely to be effected by the condition than people of white British origin. Monitoring the condition currently involves people measuring their blood glucose levels by pricking their fingers, squeezing drops of blood onto test strips, and processing the results with portable glucometers Not only is this process uncomfortable, it is messy and often has to be repeated several times every day. However, this intrusive test could soon become extinct after a revolutionary laser sensor was developed right here in Leeds, which looks set to transform the lives of millions of people living with the condition. The new technology, developed by Professor Gin Jose and a team in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Leeds, uses a small device with low-powered lasers to measure blood glucose levels without penetrating the skin and could give people a simpler, pain-free alternative to finger pricking. Named the Glucosense Monitor, it has continuous monitoring capabilities making it ideal for development as a wearable device. This could help improve the lives of millions of people by enabling them to constantly monitor their glucose levels without the need for an implant. It is also good news for healthcare providers as it could provide a simpler and cheaper alternative to both of the current methods – finger pricking, which uses disposable sample strips, or invasive continuous monitors, which use implanted sensors that need regular replacement. Professor Jose explained: “Unlike the traditional method, this new non-invasive technology can constantly monitor blood glucose levels. “As well as being a replacement

for finger-prick testing, this technology opens up the potential for people with diabetes to receive continuous readings, meaning they are instantly alerted when intervention is needed. “This will allow people to selfregulate and minimise emergency hospital treatment. This wearable device would then be just one step from a product which sends alerts to smart phones or readings directly to doctors, allowing them to profile how a person is managing their diabetes over time.” At the heart of the new technology is a piece of nanoengineered silica glass with ions

that fluoresce in infrared light when a low power laser light hits them. When the glass is in contact with the users’ skin, the extent of the fluorescence signal varies in relation to the concentration of glucose in their blood. The device measures the length of time the fluorescence lasts for and uses that to calculate the glucose level in a person’s bloodstream without the need for a needle. This process takes less than 30 seconds. “The glass used in our sensors is hardwearing, acting in a similar way as that used in smartphones,”

Professor Jose added. “Because of this, our device is more affordable, with lower running costs than the existing self-monitoring systems. “Currently, we are piloting a bench top version in our clinical investigations but aim to develop two types of devices for the market. One will be a finger-touch device similar to a computer mouse. The other will be a wearable version for continuous monitoring.” The technology is licensed to Glucosense Diagnostics, a spin-out company jointly formed and funded by the University of Leeds and NetScientific plc.

DESIGN: At the heart of the new technology is a piece of nano-engineered silica glass which changes in fluorescence depending on the concentration of glucose in the patient’s blood

“This will allow people to self-regulate and minimise emergency hospital treatment. This wearable device would then be just one step from a product which sends alerts to smart phones or readings directly to doctors, allowing them to profile how a person is managing their diabetes over time.”

Be clear on cancer

Public Health England today launches a ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign aimed at women aged 70 and over to drive awareness of the risk of breast cancer amongst this age group and to increase their knowledge of lesser-known breast cancer symptoms. Around 159 women aged 70 and over in Leeds are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Nationally, approximately 30 per cent of all women diagnosed with breast cancer report a symptom other than a lump. However, research shows that when asked to name symptoms of breast cancer, only half of women over 70 (48 per cent) could name a symptom aside from a lump. Despite older women being at an increased risk of breast cancer, they are also more likely to delay going to their GP with breast cancer symptoms. For more information on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer please visit nhs.uk/breastcancer70.

Road improvements

Keighley looks set to get £10 million of road improvements to ease traffic congestion in and around the town. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority has approved £7 million funding for the Hard Ings Road Improvement Scheme and a further £3 million for town centre road improvements. Bradford Council's Executive will be asked to approve the Hard Ings Road scheme at their 21st July meeting and that delegated authority to progress it be given to the Strategic Director for Regeneration and Culture in consultation with the portfolio holder. The A650 Hard Ings Road is a key commuter route which carries an average of 34,000 vehicles on a typical weekday with around 2,500 at peak times causing considerable congestion and pollution. The improvements are expected to halve queuing at peak times.

Southmere’s

Scarecrows By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Staff and students from a Bradford academy were joined by some unusual faces in the playground last week as a scarecrow festival overtook the school grounds. Southmere Primary Academy, in Great Horton, hosted the event for pupils who not only got to learn how to make the decorative models, but also got the chance to create some of their own. Each year group fashioned their characters from straw, cloth, ribbon and just about every other material they could get their hands on before scattering their finished characters around the school’s expansive fields. A judging panel then decided on the winning entry for the day with all shapes and sizes on show. Vice-Principal, Delyth Roberts, who will take over the reigns as Principal from the start of the next academic year, said it was a fantastic way to round off the school year. “The children have responded really well to the project which came about after the work of one of our teachers, Sharon McManus, with the gardening club over the past year,” she said. “They have done a brilliant job of developing the outdoor area and maximising this huge space we have here onsite, growing crops and maintaining the grounds all year.” She continued: “A lot of pupils

do not have such spaces available to them when they are at home. Therefore, the gardening team have worked really hard this year to make sure we make the most of the area. “The scarecrows look very much at home today.” Children had spent up to three days creating the scarecrows in their class teams, ensuring each model stood on its own. From cowboy-inspired designs to Bugs Life and even footballers, the range was extremely broad as students were given the freedom to create their own models. Year 6 pupil, Farhan said: “We

have never done anything quite like this and it has been really fun.” Classmate, Megan, added: “We have made three scarecrows so far. The task was to make them without any tape or Blu-Tack, but to make sure they will stand on their own. “It was really good and our scarecrows were great.” Southmere Primary Academy celebrated its transition to academy status earlier this year with the unveiling of a plaque by then Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Mike Gibbons, and CEO of the National Education Trust, Ian Kershaw.

Street food and Malaysian cuisine at the heart of Bradford’s tastiest festival

World Curry Festival set for September return

BUSY: Thousands flock to the festival every year with crowds experiencing flavours from around the world

Cover story continued The popular event, which welcomes thousands of visitors every year, will this year focus on street foods from the sub-continent as well as the usual flavoursome curry-theme. A marquee stage will offer up from world demonstration’s renowned chefs whilst interactive stalls give people of all ages and abilities the chance to get ‘hands-on’ with the festival. Organiser and founder, Zulfi Karim, said he was excited to give another memorable visitors experience when the festival launches. “Having to postpone the event earlier this year due to a family bereavement was unfortunate but we are now excited to bring the festival back bigger and better than ever in September,” he said.

“It will be a brand new venue with the beautiful Lister Park hosting the entertainment and Cartwright Hall providing the perfect backdrop throughout the programme of events. “We have some fresh ideas ready and are looking forward to welcoming people from across the region and further afield to come together and enjoy some incredible street food.” Now in its seventh year, Mr Karim says the festival strives to live up to its aim of promoting ‘gastrodiplomacy’ - bringing people of all cultures and backgrounds together over a love of food. Having been launched by the American Ambassador in 2014, the festival’s international partner this year is Malaysia with ties between the country and the festival only growing stronger in recent months. Earlier this year, a delegation from Bradford, led by Mr Karim,

took the curry festival to Malaysia after receiving an invite from the State Government of Penang. Mr Karim says he believes the Bradford public will embrace the Malaysian culture when delegates from the nation arrive in the city for the festival. “Every year we see people from different cultures, backgrounds etc.

come together through food,” he added. “Last year we were fortunate to have the American Ambassador on hand to help launch the festival and this year we will have Malaysian officials bringing their recipes and culture to Bradford. “I am really looking forward to seeing all the different ethnic and

cultural variations on offer from across the subcontinent.” The official launch of the festival will be held on Thursday 10th September with a gala dinner at Cartwright Hall. Meanwhile a full schedule of events will be released soon at www.worldcurryfestival.com

Little Germany planning rules

Bradford Council’s Executive is being asked to approve planning rule changes designed to breathe new life back into a historic section of the city. Planning officers have been working with Historic England (formerly English Heritage) and local group Little Germany Action to introduce a new way of reducing bureaucracy and cutting costs. Following a six week consultation with building owners and other stakeholders, Bradford Council wants to introduce a Local Development Order (LDO) and a Local Listed Building Consent Order (LLBCO) into Little Germany and the Cathedral Area. A report to the Executive, which meets on Tuesday 21st July, at City Hall, says the orders will apply to specific buildings within Little Germany and the Cathedral Precinct Conservation Area to encourage investment in vacant and under occupied buildings.

COLLECTION: Children, staff and governors from Iqra Academy show off their collection of food before it is distributed to the most disadvantaged in Bradford

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Ramadan is a month of generosity and giving, with Muslims around the world donating to charities and causes at home and overseas. Over the past two weeks, one primary school in Bradford has taken this giving spirit to heart as pupils launched their own food harvest at Manningham’s Iqra Academy. Every one of the 710 pupils at the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ school brought in at least one item of food with everything from cereals to pasta and tins of goods donated to the cause. Devised by teaching assistant, Samira Afzal, the food will help the most disadvantaged in Bradford and was distributed just prior to Eid. “When I was in school, we used to have harvest collections for charities,” Ms Afzal said. “With it being Ramadan, and the school year coming to an end this week, we thought why not host our own harvest here as well. “To say this is the first time we have done this collection the children have done really well. “The parents have been really supportive and the teachers encouragement has helped drive the harvest forward.” Pupils from the school helped distribute some of the goods to the disadvantaged in Bradford last week, going out into the

community to see directly who they were helping. Many have gone above and beyond what was expected when the project was launched, with some children even bringing in their own food to give to the appeal. Learning leader and pastoral manager, Ruby Hussain, spoke with pupils about the project during ‘circle time’ and was delighted to see a new side to many of them. “The great thing about this collection is that every child has taken part,” she said. “We got to see this caring side of the children that isn’t always on show with kids of this age. “Some children have even brought in big bags of food to donate and they have all done a fantastic job.” Working alongside local causes is something Iqra Academy has been doing for a number of years as Chair of Governors, Parwaiz Bashir, explained. “Working with our local community is really important to the school, and we have held similar collections before,” he said. “Last year some of our pupils went to a residential home to speak with the elderly and deliver gifts, whilst this project reaches out to a different part of the community. “The children have done a fantastic job in giving something back through this project.”

Hit and Run

CHARGED: Majid Malik appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court last week, charged with death by dangerous driving

Police investigating a fatal road traffic collision in Leeds have charged a Bradford man who failed to stop at the scene. James Gilbey, from Bramley, was tragically killed just before midnight on Monday 13th July, when he was hit by a blue Volkswagen Golf as he attempted to cross the road. He had been out with friends when he was returning home and was struck by the vehicle which failed to stop despite the registration plate falling off the car. Mr Gilbey was described as a ‘devoted and loving son, brother and boyfriend’ by the police who immediately launched an appeal for information regarding the whereabouts of three suspects.

Man charged with death by dangerous driving

On Friday 17th July, Majid Malik, aged 27, of Silverhill Avenue, Bradford, appeared before Leeds Magistrates on charges of death by dangerous driving. He was also charged with failing to stop and report an accident after turning himself in to a police station. Following the court appearance, Malik was remanded in custody and will next appear at Leeds Crown Court on 31st July. Detective Chief Inspector Elizabeth Belton, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said investigations are still ongoing as Mr Gilbey’s family are supported by officers. “I would like to thank the public for their excellent response to our appeals for information,” she said. “James' family are completely devastated about his death and we are doing everything we can to provide the answers they need about exactly what happened. “Specially-trained police family liaison officers are working closely with the family and offering them every support at what is clearly a really difficult time for them.” Police also arrested a 28-yearold man, from Bradford, on Thursday 16th July on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is believed to be the driver of the Audi A5, which was travelling in convoy with the Golf at the time of the collision. He remained in custody on Friday whilst seven other men, aged 23, 29, 24, 22, 25, 25 and 27, have all been released on bail.

A Royal Opening Pioneering training centre opened by Duke of Edinburgh By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

West Yorkshire Police’s newest training facilities were officially opened earlier this month, with royalty on hand to officially cut the ribbon. His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, opened the new £38 million training facility at Wakefield’s Carr Gate complex, in front of officers and guests on Friday 10th July. The new site, which includes state-of-the-art firearms, public order and driver training facilities, is located alongside Bishopgarth House - which features more technological and traditional learning environments. The Duke was given a tour of the site before unveiling a plaque

to mark the official opening. He was also the first to sign the centre’s official visitors’ book, using a pen last used by Her Majesty The Queen when visiting the former Bishopgarth training centre on 26th November 1982. The West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, said: “I was delighted to welcome the Duke of Edinburgh to our excellent facilities at Carr Gate. “As West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner I have pledged to do everything I can to work with police and partners to keep our communities safe and feeling safer and Carr Gate plays a vital role in that. “The visit was a great success; not only did it give me a chance to showcase the facilities to the Duke of Edinburgh but I also

West Yorkshire Police provide training to the highest standards and it was a real privilege to highlight this during the visit.” The Duke observed how officers train in the use of handcuff, baton, open hand and conflict resolution tactics before gaining an insight into firearms training and visiting the Public Order Training Centre which contains replica buildings and street layouts. The new Carr Gate complex houses police training facilities which are second to none and are among the very best, not only in the country but across the world. Three firearms ranges allow live

fire training with exercises supported by the latest technology and video imagery – some used for the very first time in the UK ensure officers are placed under pressures as near to real life operational situations as possible. Indoor and outdoor street scenes with actual buildings bring to life public order training from front line tactics to command decision making. A bespoke public order arena with street layouts which can be altered along with lighting and noise places officers under varied and new challenges. There is a viewing gantry providing staff with a bird’s eye view of the training below to enhance feedback and learning. The driver training facility utilises the latest technology, replacing the old ‘skid pan’ at Crofton with a vehicle which sits upon a remote controlled frame to allow trainers to recreate a variety of road conditions.

GOAL smashed Mini footballers raise thousands for charity

Generosity was the winner of this year’s annual Wibsey Primary School penalty shoot-out after children raised over £6,500 for two local causes. 640 pupils from the main school took part in the football competition to raise the record sum, which was split evenly between the Bradford City Community Foundation and the Bradford Burns Unit. In previous years, the school has donated half of the proceeds to Bradford City whilst retaining the other half for school funds. This year, the full £6,727.42 has been

donated to mark the 30th anniversary of the Bradford City Fire Disaster. Headteacher, Nigel Cooper, said it was a fantastic effort from all involved for a local cause. “The children had a great time trying to score penalties against Billy Bantam,” he said. “The result was that we raised the most money the school has ever raised for charity. “Although it was a fun event, we explained to pupils what the Bradford Burns Unit does and why it was needed after the Bradford City Fire Disaster 30 years ago.

SHOOT: Children who raised the most sponsorship money from the penalty shootout were presented with a signed “I want to thank the pupils, their families, staff, ball from Bradford City (clockwise from top left) Resource and event manager at Wibsey Primary, Christine Thwaite; Year 6 pupil, Maci Partridge; Year 4’s Kaiden Davey, and Ayaan Madassar from Year 3 the local community, Bradford City and all who contributed so generously to make this record sum possible.” Pupils took part in the charity event last month, on 10th June, when they came up against the formidable goalkeeper Billy Bantam – perhaps better known as the Bradford City mascot. Many young stars donned their amber and gold kits for the event before the donations were counted up and a cheque presentation was finally held last week. Ian Ormondroyd, from Bradford City, and Jing Tay, the David Sharpe Fellow at the Burns Unit, received their cheques on Thursday 16th July and congratulated all the pupils on their fundraising efforts. Three pupils were also presented with signed footballs from Bradford City for raising the most funds individually, with Ayaan Madassar (£178), Maci Partridge (£124) and Kaiden Davey (£115) picking up the prizes.

A healthier Leeds

England’s Public Health chief, Duncan Selbie, was offered a Rhino-sized welcome when visiting Leeds to see how the city is improving health. Mr Selbie, who is Chief Executive of Public Health England, was in the city to find out how Leeds is improving health prevention in the wake of the council taking over responsibility for public health two years ago. He was also able to congratulate the Leeds Rhinos Foundation (LRF) and Leeds Rhinos on their approach to increasing healthy lifestyles. Both the council and local NHS organisations have been working closely with LRF to improve health in Leeds, linking with Leeds Rhinos and LRF to build on the link between active lifestyles and healthier lives. LRF have taken an active role supporting Change4Life campaigns, delivering messages into schools using their ambassadors scheme, through the activity delivered in the Tryzone education centre and via their website and social media. Empowering Communities was born out of a simple idea - Give a man a fish and you can feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you can feed him for a lifetime. There are thousands of organisations worldwide who aim to support the millions of destitute people locked in a life of poverty without any means of escape. What if these people had a chance at life to not only support themselves and their loved ones, but were able to create an of progress, environment aspiration and self-empowerment much like what we have access to the developed world? in Empowering Communities aim to achieve exactly that. Beyond the idea of providing basic aid and care which leaves people dependent upon continued and charity, hand-outs Empowering Communities is trying to restore the ambition, the hope and the drive among the most needy. They aim to help people reach a position in the future where they are capable of not only supporting themselves and their loved ones, but are also in a position to continue the cycle by helping others too. Instead of a blanket, a meal or a t-shirt with a fancy logo, the registered charity are helping people build their futures by supporting them into employment. Training, references and resources are provided for men and women so they can work and put food on their tables and clothes on their backs. Empowering Communities have also provided sewing machines to women who want to make livings as tailors, and market stalls to young men whereby they not only sell fruit and vegetables to earn their living, but also dictate their own direction of work. Children who were once forced to work in sweatshops or garages because their families couldn’t afford to pay the school fees are now getting an education and creating a future that they once could have only dreamed of, whilst people who were facing a lifetime of disability, due to basic injuries, can now receive the medical treatment they need so they may get back on their feet. Over 100 families have been helped in a variety of ways since Empowering Communities was officially launched on 26th August 2014. Men, women and children are able to, for the first time in their lives, work to improve their own lives and create a future that they never thought possible. “Help us to continue our mission and expand our work to help many more people and become a part of the team.

LIFE-CHANGING: Ibrahim Khan was shot by the Taliban, shattering his leg. He was forced to beg on the streets for months until he came across Empowering Communities. He has now received treatment and will soon get a job and a second chance at life

SUPPORT: Neelam, Hafsa, Iram and Qasim take a rickshaw to school instead of begging on the street

y PRIORITIES: Teenage girls can now worr ied about homework instead of getting marr because their parents can't support them

“Whether you would like to help with your donations, volunteering or fundraising we are always happy to expand our team. “We hope to work together and continue our mission of empowering communities to create a better tomorrow.”

FUTURE: Children finally have hope for a brighter future through school now they are not forced into child labour

National Memorial Day Day remembers victims of honour abuse On 16th June 2014, new legislation was introduced meaning forced marriage officially became a criminal act. Fast forward almost exactly one year on from that date, and on Tuesday 14th July, the first national day of annual remembrance for victims of honour killings was held across the UK. Held on the birthday of Shafilea Ahmed – a 19-year-old from Bradford who was killed by her parents after becoming a victim of honour based violence and an attempted forced marriage, the day highlights the massive detrimental effects such crimes have on individuals. Forced marriage is a crime where one or both spouses do not, or cannot, consent to the marriage and duress is involved. This can include physical, psychological, financial, sexual and emotional pressure. In some cases victims suffer violence and abuse. The day of remembrance came about after a campaign by Karma Nirvana – a charity supporting victims of honour crimes, and Cosmopolitan Magazine. Jasvinder Sanghera, CEO of the charity, explained how the

date would help raise much needed awareness for the victims. “We are going to be honouring the memories of the most honourable human beings where the perpetrators tried to erase them completely,” she said. “It's also an opportunity to raise awareness about the issue of honour based abuse and the scale of the problem in Britain.” month, the first Last conviction for forced marriage in the UK was made as a 34-yearold businessman was sentenced to 16 years, having admitted to four counts of rape, voyeurism, bigamy and forced marriage. Four years are to run concurrently for the forced marriage conviction with the defendant set to be subject to five years licence on release. The judge remarked that the defendant was an ‘arrogant, manipulative and devious man’ and one who showed ‘no remorse’. Ms Sanghera added: “We are proud that the UK has the first conviction for forced marriage. We hope that this will send a strong message out to those perpetrating this heinous crime that forced marriage will not be tolerated in the UK.

“We also hope that this will inspire more people to come forward and receive support.” Under new legislation, anyone found guilty of forced marriage can face up to seven years imprisonment. Between 2010 and 2014, UK police forces recorded more than 11,000 cases of honour crimes, whilst 18 cases of honour killings were committed in the country over the same period.

Making a birthday wish come true Huge card appeal launched to celebrate autistic child’s fourth birthday

A young autistic boy from Nottingham had a birthday to remember this week as he opened hundreds of cards, donated from across the country. Four-year-old Matthew Arnold suffers from ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), Developmental Delay and possible Oro Motor Dysfunction, and after inviting his whole class to his birthday party, only received two replies. That is when the power of the internet took over, with Matthew’s sister putting out an appeal on Facebook for people to post birthday cards for her brother to ensure his big day was ‘extra special’. In Bradford, the InTouch Communities team launched

their own ‘Birthday Card Appeal’, collecting dozens of cards for the youngster. Bilal Shah, a volunteer with the charity, first heard about Matthew’s situation on Facebook and after contacting the family, arranged for the appeal to begin. “I got in touch with Matthew’s sister first of all via a Facebook group two weeks ago to say I wanted to send a birthday card down,” Bilal explained. “I then told the team at InTouch about the situation and we came up with the idea to send a whole mass of cards to show there are people out there who care. “Kids should not be alienated because of a disability and that is why

Sam Naaz, volunteer manager at InTouch, signed her card for the young child and praised the simplicity of the effective campaign. “InTouch Communities focuses on helping the wider community, not just through providing meals but looking at society as a whole and helping a cause which needs backing,” she said. “Our aim is to bring communities together by creating a goal we can all strive to achieve and with Matthew’s birthday card appeal, everyone can get involved.”

Zayn slams ‘Fat joke’ Naughty Boy in latest Twitter spat After leaving One Direction, one may have thought that it would be Zayn Malik’s solo career that propelled him back into the media spotlight. However, as yet again proved last week, it is in fact the 22-year-old’s Twitter account that seems to be making most of the headlines. On Monday 13th July, having previously fallen out with former bandmate Louie Tomlinson on the micro-blogging site, Malik turned his attention to

music producer Naughty Boy, who he labelled a ‘fat joke’. Since his split from the world’s biggest boyband, Malik has been pictured spending time with the producer, real name Shahid Khan, with the pair posting pics of themselves in the studio. This conception of friendship appeared to be blown out of the water on Monday however when Malik tweeted Naughty Boy saying: “You fat joke stop pretending we're

friends no one knows you.” This was followed up by a Tweet reading: “Someone learned how to upload a video... maybe now he should learn how to use logic. Ha you ain't s**t but a faker.” The latter tweet seems to criticise the producer for uploading a clip from a video for Malik’s demo of ‘No Type’. Naughty Boy, who has worked with the likes of Emeli Sande and Sam Smith, also sent out a

couple of cryptic messages of his own from his Twitter account. He wrote: “This ‘music’ business teaches you the tricks but never the truth. You know who you are,” followed by: “Don’t feed the hand that bites you.” Malik is not the first person to fall out with Naughty Boy online with Tomlinson labelling him ‘inconsiderate’ after publishing a separate acoustic track online earlier this year.

DETERMINED: Kamal Aftab has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity in recent years and after being diagnosed with Blood Cancer earlier this year, is now aiming to raise £50,000 from his hospital room

Cancer patient takes on ‘Hospital Marathon’ When an award winning community champion was diagnosed with Leukaemia earlier this year, it forced him to cancel plans for a charity trek through the Alps. However, determined not to let cancer overtake his fundraising goals, Kamal Aftab decided he would set up his own unique fundraiser, all from within his hospital room. Unable to fast during the month of Ramadan due to illness, the nationally voted ‘2014 Volunteer of the Year’, says he still wanted to sacrifice something and so opted to complete the first ever ‘Hospital Marathon’. “I will be completing a 26 mile walk in my five-metre square hospital room, walking side to side, armed with just a pedometer and a smile,” he said. “The chemotherapy has different results every day, sometimes you feel fine and others you don’t want to leave your bed. “I needed something to keep me occupied and motivated throughout my treatment. That is when we came up with the idea of a ‘marathon in a room’. “I can do it in my own time, in this confined space, and have so far completed three miles.” Kamal, from Huddersfield, is being treated at St James’

Volunteer of the Year fighting Leukaemia with 26 mile challenge

Hospital, Leeds, for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and is several weeks into a three-month treatment. The marathon challenge will raise funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research (LLR) with the avid volunteer, who has already raised tens-of-thousands of pounds for other causes previously, aiming to raise £50,000 for the charity. “Had it not been for research carried out by the LLR already, people in my situation would not recieve the treatment and care currently available,” he said. “That is why I am aiming to raise this money for the research to continue and to help in the fight against blood cancer.” Having been diagnosed unexpectedly following a routine doctor’s appointment, Kamal was

rushed into hospital where he has been treated for the past four weeks. He is set to return home this week following his first round of treatment where he will recover before undertaking a further two cycles. “The support from all the staff here has been amazing,” he added, “I cannot say a bad word about anything. “When I was brought in last month, it was my first experience of being in hospital and I found myself bed bound. “Initially it was a big shock but I have a great network of support from friends and family to keep me going and of course the Hospital Marathon.” Kamal has already raised over £7,500 since setting up his JustGiving Page

Industrial chemicals used in Asian sweets

Huddersfield bakery fined for use of dangerous additive

A dangerous chemical, which is commonly used in the sewerage industry, has been turning ‘Asian Sweets’ pink at a Huddersfield bakery, resulting in a hefty fine for the company’s directors. Fine Bakers and Sweet Centre Limited was fined over £2,000 last week after two visits by Trading Standards officers to their premises last year uncovered the use of a dangerous additive.

FINED: Fine Bakers and Sweet Centre Limited was found to be manufacturing and selling sweets containing the additive, Rhodamine B – which can cause cancer (image: Google Maps)

Firstly, in June 2014, routine sampling work was carried out at the bakery on Crosland Road, where a number of sweets were sampled. Two months later, a further inspection was undertaken at the baker’s manufacturing premises, on Thorne Road, where further sweets were procured. Samples from both inspections were submitted for analysis and it was subsequently reported that a non permitted rose pink food colour, and two of the samples of the sweets, both pink in colour, contained Rhodamine B. The chemical compound appears green in powder form but when added to water turns a vivid fluorescent pink colour. In this instance, it had been used to colour the sweets pink despite not being permitted as a food additive due to it being considered carcinogenic and genotoxic. As a result, directors of Fine Bakers and Sweet Centre Limited, Hafiz Munir Ahmed and Mansurul Aziz, appeared before Kirklees Magistrates Court last week. Both pleaded guilty to placing food on the market containing Rhodamine B, as well as failing to provide traceability information identifying from where the additive had been supplied. The company was ordered to pay £2,200 prosecution costs with a £120 victim surcharge. The directors were

July 2015 - 3rd Edition each fined £500 and both were ordered to pay £550 prosecution costs and £50 victim surcharge. Ahmed was also disqualified from being a director for two years. David Lodge, Head of Trading Standards said: “Consumers rightly expect the food they buy to be safe. “This bakery used a dangerous, banned substance and had no records to identify where they had obtained the substance from. “Trading Standards will continue to take action against food businesses that break the law.” To place the dangerous sweets on the market is an offence under Regulation 3 of the Food Additives, Flavourings, Enzymes and Extraction Solvents (England) Regulations 2013. It is also an offence to fail to meet the traceability requirements of which the bakery were unable to do. Councillor Bill Urry, of the West Yorkshire Trading Standards Committee, added: “West Yorkshire Trading Standards is committed to protecting the health of West Yorkshire citizens. “Food businesses must take steps to ensure all the food they produce and sell is safe, legal and that they have adequate traceability systems in place. “The sale of unsafe food is an offence and samples are taken to identify those businesses failing to comply with the law.”

Explorer of the Year

123-125 Barkerend Road, Bradford BD3 9AU. Email: shazad.hdad@shdadsolicitors.com Office Telephone: 01274 731000

POLICE: Maria Hussain picked up the overall Explorer of the Year award from West Yorkshire Police last week, pictured with Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, and Temporary Chief Constable, Dee Collins

Bradford crime fighter is top of class in West Yorkshire A prospective police officer from Bradford showed she certainly possesses the skills for the job in future years after picking up a county-wide award earlier this month. Maria Hussain, from Bradford Moor, was named both the ‘Bradford Explorer of the Year’ and ‘Overall Explorer of the Year’ at the West Yorkshire Police Explorers Awards on Wednesday 1st July. Having partaken in the explorers group over the past 12 months, the 18-year-old was selected from 150 fellow participants to scoop the top award, and was joined by six others to be named her region’s top ‘Explorer’. Doing ‘much more than just PCSO work’, Maria explained what she had been doing with the group over the past year and how shocked she was to receive two awards. “When they read out my name on the night I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “To win both awards is something I never expected and there were celebrations all around in my family. “During my time with the Explorers I have learnt so much more about the police, looking at different aspects from fire arms support to the dogs unit. “We are not just police community support officers (PCSOs), rather we explore more in depth about the police. It is an absolutely fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to pursue a career in the police and opens up doors to a whole new world. “Because of my experiences with the Explorers I know that I want to work in the fire arms department and the best way to achieve my goals.” Maria received her award from West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson and Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins. Open to young crime fighters aged

between 16 and 18, the programme aims to inspire young people and give them an exciting, behind-the-scenes look into 21st century policing. Mr Burns-Williamson commended all those who had been recognised at the ceremony for their ‘determination’ and ‘understanding’ of their roles as explorers. “I congratulate each and every young Explorer who has received a Certificate of Achievement which demonstrates how well they have worked on the programme,” he said. “Programmes such as these are crucial because these young people could become the future talent of West Yorkshire Police. “It is important that we treat all young people as citizens, valuing their interests and opinions as much as any other group in the community, and this programme provides a great insight for those interested in a policing career. “They have now developed an understanding of West Yorkshire Police and their talent and determination has been recognised.” Simon Phillips, who coordinates the Explorers programme, added: “This is the culmination of a year of hard work and dedication by young people who, we hope, will be the future of West Yorkshire Police. “The awards evening provides the opportunity to recognise and reward individual and group achievements and for senior members of West Yorkshire Police to engage with young people from across the community. “Although Explorers has come to an end, we hope that many will continue to work with us as Volunteers, Specials, PCSOs and Police Officers.”

“This is the culmination of a year of hard work and dedication by young people who, we hope, will be the future of West Yorkshire Police.”

‘The most important meal of the day’ Breakfast club gives children the best start to their day More pupils than ever at a Bradford primary school have been starting their days in the most nutritious way possible this year thanks to the extended services of the ‘Breakfast Club’. The in-school initiative, which runs at Hollingwood Primary, caters for 30 children who enjoy a filling breakfast before starting their learning day. Established a number of years ago, the project was extended in September 2014 to cater for ten more children, after Nasreen Karim, of Platinum Partnership Solicitors pledged to support the club. Through the Platinum Partnership Foundation, Mrs Karim has committed to giving back to her local community and called on other businesses to follow her lead. Explaining more about the project, she said: “It had come to my attention that many children were going to school without having had any breakfast. “This really saddened me and I wanted to help. I contacted Mr Duke and offered financial support for those that were on the waiting list for the breakfast club. “Having breakfast mentally prepares children for the day ahead.” She added: “It's been extremely rewarding so far. I pop into school from time to time to see the children at breakfast time.

“They're in school early, they've enjoyed a really good breakfast, they’re smiling and chatting, but most of all they're ready for school.” The two-form entry school was rated as ‘Good’ across the board in its latest Ofsted report, with specific praise for the pupils’ behaviour with ‘good attitudes to learning, shown in their enjoyment and hard work in lessons’. Headteacher, Mr Duke, says the breakfast club gives pupils a chance to settle into their school day faster and allows them to enjoy their days more. “The breakfast club provides a settled start to the day for children who attend, with punctuality and attendance improved for pupils,” he said. “Having previously only had 20 spaces available, this year we have been able to meet the greater demand and provide this targeted resource to a further ten children, thanks to support from Nasreen. “Children are able to meet friends and talk with staff before the day begins, and that does have a big impact on their day.” Earlier this year, all pupils who were sitting their SATS exams at Hollingwood were provided with a lavish breakfast which included bagels, fresh pancakes, waffles, toast and an array of fruit.

FOOD: Ten more children have benefited from Breakfast Club thanks to funding from Nasreen Karim and the Platinum Partnership Foundation

children A group of children from a Bradford madrassa handed over a cheque worth more than £3,000 to charity last week, after undertaking a number of fundraising activities over Ramadan. Clement’s Gate Madrassa, located inside Lister Mills, currently cares for around 50 children in two separate afterschool classes from Monday to Thursday every week. Throughout the Islamic holy month, the youngsters were tasked with raising funds for a cause they had chosen and after much deliberation, it was people in Nepal and Africa who were selected to benefit from the funds. After two weeks of sponsored challenges – ranging from halfday fasts to giving up sweets or television for a week, alongside bake and toy sales, a total of £3,020 was raised. Shafeen Majid is manager at Clement’s Gate and helps spearhead the fundraising campaign every year in aid of a

different charity. This year, the Penny Appeal was chosen as it supports both Africa and Nepal, with the cheque handover taking place last week on Thursday 9th July. “It was a fantastic day and the children have done amazingly well to raise so much money,” Ms Majid said. “From the day they selected their causes, they have overseen the fundraisers and we never imagined that they would be able to raise so much money. “Initially we were just going to hold a bake sale once a week, but their enthusiasm resulted in them bringing things in every day. There were certainly some busy mums over the past couple of weeks.” On Thursday, during the handover event, the class were joined by guest speaker, Sonam Bahalla. Sonam has recently returned from Nepal and spoke of the devastating impact the two earthquakes have had on the country, reinforcing the

importance of the fundraising the children had undertaken. “To see the children responding to Sonam was lovely,” Ms Majid added. “They got to hear about where the money they had raised was going and that only helped inspire them even more.” The cheque was presented to Penny Appeal representative, Khalil Benkhalil, who praised the efforts of all the children, and explained who would benefit from the funds. “Our motto at Penny Appeal is ‘small change big difference’ and these children have done their small change and more,” he said. “The money they raised will supply meals to people in Africa through our ‘feed our world’ project. In Nepal it will help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, and hydrate the thirsty.” He added: “For the kids to raise so much money not only empowers them but the community and we saw how much they cared for the two causes.”

A Mullaco Master-chef

Manish Sharma shares passion for food with Dewsbury customers

An independent supermarket showed its customers just how easy it is to be inventive when it comes to Indian cuisine last week by enlisting the help of a professional chef. Executive chef of Associated British World Foods (ABWF), Manish Sharma, visited Mullaco Supermarket in Dewsbury to share his passion for food and natural flair in the kitchen. Mr Sharma, who has in the past trained at the prestigious Taj Hotel chain in India, was on hand to show customers that the Patak’s brand of curry pastes and sauces could be used to ‘produce so many more alternatives to a normal curry’. The ABWF chef held a cookery demonstration around the theme of street food at the supermarket in Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury - a category of food which is very much in vogue at the moment he explained. “I work quite a lot with the mainstream chefs, contract caterers and restaurants,” he said. “Street foods is something which is in the ascendency at the moment. “If you think about different cuisines, whether it is Indian, Thai, Chinese or

Mexican, anything within the street food category is selling very, very well.” Mr Sharma added that another key objective he was hoping to achieve through the demonstrations was to show that Indian food need not be too heavy on the stomach. He continued: “With Indian food the perception is that it is quite heavy, quite oily, as Indians we know that’s not the case, we make it to our taste every single day. “The purpose of my visit was to give the ordinary consumer a different prospect in terms of Indian cuisine.” The chef, who is an alumni of the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering & Nutrition, in Pusa New Delhi – one of the top five government colleges in India, said the taster day at Mullaco Supermarket was a huge success. Ahmed Mulla, managing director at Mullaco Supermarket, said: “It was great to have Manish come down and show our customers how easy it is to be inventive with regular everyday products. “Having such a prestigious name from the industry grace our supermarket was inspiring. The feedback we’ve had since Manish’s visit has been overwhelmingly positive and I thank him for being such a wonderful guest. “It was a timely visit, coinciding with Ramadan and our huge sale.”

Bradford teenager who planned to join IS jailed A radicalised Bradford teenager with ‘chilling’ extremist views has been detained for planning to travel to Syria to fight with the so-called Islamic State. The Old Bailey heard the only reason British-born 19-year-old Syed Choudhury, who admitted to engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist act, did not go was because he could not find someone to travel with. from Bradford, Originally Choudhury was living with his aunt in Cardiff and attending the Cardiff and Vale College. The court heard how in July 2014, Choudhury took part in a demonstration in Cardiff protesting about the conflict in Gaza. He carried a banner proclaiming his support for Islamic State, which brought him to the attention of antiterrorism officers and was arrested 16th November after being spotted by a local anti-terror officer. He was due to go on trial on Wednesday 8th July at the Old Bailey, but changed his plea after the jury had been sworn in. Abdul Iqbal QC, defending, said the evidence showed Choudhury's enthusiasm to travel to Turkey or Syria, but said that Choudhury had not got further than making inquiries. "There are no direct links with anyone in the area of Turkey or Syria who could assist him," he said. "Naivety, immaturity and lack of insight are the hallmarks of his character," Mr Iqbal said. But while in custody, he had earlier spoke about bringing Sharia Law to the UK and said he dreamed of dying fighting for IS. "The bluntness of what you said on that occasion is chilling. It reveals your dangerousness," Judge Peter Rook QC, said. "However I do accept you are immature. You are impression-able to indoctrination. "You now say 'I'm lucky I came to prison, I'm lucky I got stopped'. "You have shown some awareness of how misguided your earlier extremist position was." Following the sentence, South Wales Police Assistant Chief Constable Nikki Holland Police said: "Cardiff is a multi-cultural city and local policing teams, together with partner agencies, work hard to ensure that the people who live there can do so in a safe and peaceful environment. "It is therefore vital that those who wish to support violent and murderous actions against others are identified both through rigorous policing and the support of communities who can report suspicious actions and behaviour." The court heard Choudhury had been radicalised by people he regarded as elders after he left home to study in Cardiff. He will serve three years, four months at a young offenders' institution.

RESPECT: A minute silence was held across the UK on Tuesday 7th July in memory of the victims who lost their lives in the 7/7 London bombings

London Bombings - 10 years on Leeds falls silent in memory of 7/7 victims Thursday 7th July 2005 will forever be a date etched in the history books of Britain as 52 innocent lives were lost after four suicide bomb attacks in the capital. This past week marked ten years on from that tragic day, with the nation paying their respects to the victims with a minute silence staged across the country. In Leeds, home to three of the four suicide bombers, civic and community leaders gathered at Civic Hall for a special nondenominational event. Timed to coincide with the national remembrance ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, the service was led by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Judith Chapman, and Leeds City Council Leader, Cllr Judith Blake. The city representatives spoke of how the destructive acts committed by the terrorists, who targeted rush-hour tube stations and a bus, were entirely at odds with the spirit of community and cohesion in what, for some of the perpetrators, was their home city. The Lord Mayor praised Leed’s resident’s response as they continue to ‘stand side-by-side’ in the fight against terrorism. “We stand in solidarity with the city of London in commemorating these tragic events,” she said. “Three of the perpetrators came from Leeds, yet they knew nothing of the values of this city or of tolerance, respect and democracy. “We know we stand side-byside with the people of Leeds in opposition to terrorism and we stand side by side in having tolerance and respect for each other.”

SPEECH: Hanif Malik, chief executive of the Hamara Centre, said Leeds and Beeston’s response to the attacks highlight that the incidents were ‘not reflective’ of the community

Cllr Blake added: “We are clear that we will not allow such terrible acts of violence to divert us from our values of tolerance and understanding: values that very much form the basis of this city and its diverse communities. “It’s important, therefore, to today focus on the positive work we have done, and will continue to do, to tackle and prevent extremism in this city.” Cllr Blake referenced the current and ongoing impact of terrorism across the world, including the recent atrocity in Tunisia as 38 tourists, 30 of them British, were massacred on a beach by gunmen. Outlining some of the positive work that has taken place in Leeds to combat extremism, she added: “People of all faiths, as well as those with no faith, know what is right and wrong. “Terrorism is always wrong. We condemn the 7/7 attacks and our sympathy, support and solidarity is with the victims, the survivors and their families. “We will remain focused on

ensuring Leeds is seen by all as a welcoming and compassionate city.” Also speaking at the event was Hanif Malik, chief executive of the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston. Having worked in the community where two of the four bombers lived prior to the attacks, he outlined his feelings about how the local community has come together and been strengthened as it heals from the impact of the tragic events. “Ten years on from the atrocity of the 7/7 attacks, we all vividly recall our shock and horror at discovering that Leeds was linked to the tragic events,” he said. “However, we are also able to recall the dignified and united response from all sections of our communities in ensuring that we remained resolute in not allowing the actions of a few to disrupt the cohesive nature of our home city. “People of all faiths and backgrounds have stood together over the past decade in undertaking collaborative work to further strengthen our strong relationships and in being determined to highlight that the incident is not reflective of our community. “Our sympathies today are with the families of those who lost loved ones and we stand united in condemning the attacks on the 7th July 2005 and indeed all such atrocities carried out in the name of faith.” As the speeches concluded, the Ark Royal Room at Leeds Civic Hall, where the commemoration event was held, then fell quiet as a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the victims, timed to coincide with the national silence.

July 2015 - 3rd Edition As the nation paid its respects to those lives lost in the London Bombings ten years ago, a new people’s alliance was officially launched in Leeds last week to coincide with the landmark anniversary. On Tuesday 7th July, over 650 people from faith, education and civil society organisations came together for the Founding Assembly of Leeds Citizens. The group is a branch of the national community organising charity, Citizens UK, and involves individuals from across society working together for a better Leeds. After raising £65,000 of local funding, from membership dues and founding partner contributions, the group employed a professional Community Organiser to support the work. Over the past six months, a listening campaign has been run by members across different communities aimed at building relationships and managing campaigns to tackle poverty, improve mental health services and overhaul the bus network. Last week’s event, held at Elland Road’s Centenary Pavilion, was the official launch of Leeds Citizens and called upon local decision makers to pledge their commitments to work with the alliance on a range of proposals to improve life in the city. Tom Chigbo, community organiser with Leeds Citizens, hailed the event a ‘tremendous success’ and hoped to see the group flourish in the city over the coming months. “Leeds Citizens is not an idea that has come about overnight, rather we have been working with Citizens UK for almost three years now, to develop this alliance,” he said.

that need improving. “The founding assembly was a tremendous success with almost 700 people from all backgrounds turning out for the event.” Amongst those who made commitments on the night included the Leader of Leeds City Council,

Cllr Judith Blake, who agreed to meet with Leeds Citizens at least twice a year and seek Living Wage accreditation for the City Council and across the city. Paul Matthews, Managing Director of First West Yorkshire, committed to working with Leeds

Citizens to improve the frequency of bus services and introduce a ‘Bus Covenant’ to promote mutual respect and good behaviour on buses by the end of 2015. Finally, Chris Butler, Chief Executive of Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, endorsed the campaign to provide 'navigators' for people accessing mental health services and create new culturally sensitive care for the elderly. “Receiving these commitments to work with us from senior officials is exactly why we launched this group,” Mr Chigbo added. “I hope more people will follow their example and we can improve our communities and cohesion in the city.” As the event coincided with the 7/7 anniversary, 15 young people of different faiths and backgrounds were also recognised on the night with the title ‘Peace Ambassadors’ for their work in advance of the assembly, to build relationships, including a ‘Journey of Peace’ to London. The trip, which mirrored the route taken by the three Leeds-based bombers, saw the young people visit the 7/7 memorial site, meet survivors and relatives of the bombings, and the Somali Bravanese Community. Shammah Gwedegwe, one of the Peace Ambassadors, simply described the trip by saying: “We are not retracing their steps, but replacing them with a Journey of Peace.” The Founding Assembly closed with a community iftaar where all attendees were invited to join the attending Muslims in breaking their fast for that evening.

new kind of shopping experience has arrived in Bradford, with a fusion of style and individual design already proving to be a winning combination for Artz-I. The innovative lifestyle and gift store first opened its doors in December last year, located in the iconic six-storey building on the corner of Kirkgate and Sunbridge Road - facing Godwin Street on top of the hill. Artz-I is the beginning of a new era of shopping in the city, whereby premium furnishings are sold side-by-side with Islamic art and handicrafts from around the world. From jewellery and pottery to brass and copper lamps or small furnishings, the list is endless for what is on offer inside the exciting new business. Just simply walking around the store is an experience in itself for shoppers, with imported products warranting time to appreciate each one of their designs, in the modern, contemporary environment. Likewise, the third floor art gallery is currently showcasing an Islamic art exhibition, with original pieces and prints on show in the spacious area. Plans are already underway to expand the gallery in coming weeks, as local artists get the chance to display their work in the city centre, together with a design studio and workshops. Set up by retail and business entrepreneur, Mohammed Rasul, who over 25 years ago successfully launched the high end designer menswear business, Zohm in Huddersfeild, he is joined in his latest venture by partners Tehreem Rasul and Fuad Khan. Explaining why he wanted to open in Bradford, Mohammed said: “Bradford as a city has a lot to offer. Since opening our doors here the feedback has been fantastic with the merchandise and aura of the

building receiving a lot of praise. “People are used to coming to Bradford for food but there is so much more to his area and we are hoping to make Artz-I one of the main attractions right here in the city centre. “With the new Westfield Broadway development also opening later this year, we are excited to welcome in even more customers to our unique store and gallery.” Despite its high-end appearance, prices remain competitive at Artz-I, with customers able to pick up and purchase something unique for just a couple of pounds. High quality furnishings are priced slightly higher yet are not excessive for the customer whose home could be transformed with the help of the lifestyle specialists. “We developed the store with customers in mind and because of that we have not priced out our target market,” Mohammed added. “There is something for every person and every home here, from our new range of Turkish lights to expansive Islamic artwork.” There is no denying that Artz-I has already become one of Bradford’s most exciting stores. Yet, with further plans to expand the art gallery and open a cafe on site in coming months, times are still changing for shoppers in the city.

Fight for your rights – Part I F

rom 1st October 2015, the new Consumer Rights Act 2015 replaces a number of existing laws; consolidating eight pieces of separate legislation into a single piece of new legislation. The Act will change the rules relating to the supply of goods, services and digital content for contracts made from that date. In brief the new Act aims to: • Make it easier for consumers to understand their rights and the remedies should they feel that goods/services do not live up to the promised standard; • Clarify when terms and conditions can be considered unfair; • Clarify the periods for repair, replacement and refunds related to both goods and services; • Simplify the process by which businesses can take legal action against other, often larger, companies that are breaking competition laws. Where goods do not meet the required standards, a number of remedies are available. Firstly, the consumer may reject the goods within 30 days and if the goods are rejected the consumer can ask for a full refund. The refund must be given without delay and no later than 14 days from the date the parties agree a refund is due. This remedy is not available where goods have been incorrectly installed. Should a consumer decide that he does not want to reject the goods, or is out of time to do so, he may claim for the repair or replacement of the goods. A final remedy

exists whereby if repair or replacement is not available a further right to reject the goods can be implemented. In respect of all available remedies the consumer has a statutory right to claim additional compensation if the goods have caused damage to property or personal injury. It is worth noting the exceptions to when a consumer may not be entitled to a remedy under the Act. For example, a consumer cannot claim for defects that are brought to his attention before the sale, this includes if the consumer examines the goods before purchase and any defects should have been obvious on inspection. A consumer cannot claim for damage it has caused or if he simply changes his mind about wanting the goods. Neither can a consumer make a claim for a product that was bought for a particular purpose and this purpose is not obvious or made known to the trader and it then becomes apparent that the item is unsuitable for that intended purpose. Lastly, a consumer has no rights to make a claim for faults that appear as a result of fair wear and tear. Although most of the law in the new Act is similar to the existing laws it is advised that businesses and consumers alike take the time to familiarise themselves with these changes, ahead of the 1 October implementation date. In particular, as the Act affects how products should be offered to consumers, businesses ought to be aware of any changes they may need to make to their product terms and conditions and any other consumer-focused communications.

IS heading to Bosnia?

The Islamic State terror group is secretly buying land near an isolated village in Bosnia in the heart of Europe which could be a base for devastating terror attacks on the West, a media report said on Sunday. At least 12 IS fighters trained in the village of Osve have left for Syria in recent months and five are reported to be dead, a Sunday Mirror investigation said. Crucially, the location gives IS a key strategic position due to its proximity to the Mediterranean which is used by extremists from Syria, Iraq and North Africa, the report said Security services think the area in Bosnia is used for ISIS training camps and could be a base for devastating terror attacks on the West. Counter-terrorism expert Dzevad Galijasevic said: “From this village a large number of people went to Syria and are going constantly. “The chosen location of some of the properties is on a hill, where there is no possibility to approach without being seen. It is clear that the source of the terrorist threat is right there. It is a major threat. “There is no one there who isn't ready to respond to the summons to jihad,” Galijasevic said.

RULES: A child’s passport can be cancelled by their parent under new laws

Parents in the UK will soon have the ability to cancel their child’s passport as Prime Minister David Cameron launched his latest drive against Islamic extremists earlier this week. Speaking in front of a crowd in Birmingham on Monday 20th July, Mr Cameron outlined his five year plan to tackle the growing threat of Islamic State and British nationals travelling to join the terror groups. He said the passport scheme would come into effect within a few days and would prevent travel to children believed to be at risk of joining extremists overseas. “The local environment, their families, their peers, their communities, are among the key influencers in any young person’s life,” Mr Cameron said. “So if they hear parts of the extremist worldview in their home, or their wider community, it will help legitimise it in their minds. Government will help where it can.” In September last year, the Prime Minister declared in the

House of Commons that new powers were needed to seize terrorist suspects’ passports. On Monday he confirmed these new powers would come into effect in the near future. “I know how worried some people are that their children might turn to this ideology – and even seek to travel to Syria or Iraq,” he continued.

adding: “You are free to put whoever you want on the airwaves. “But there are a huge number of Muslims in our country who have a proper claim to represent liberal values in local communities…people who run credible charities and community organisations, councillors and MPs…so do consider giving them the platform they deserve.

“There are a huge number of Muslims in our country who have a proper claim to represent liberal values in local communities.” “So I can announce today we are going to introduce a new scheme to enable parents to apply directly to get their child’s passport cancelled to prevent travel.” As well as introducing the new powers to parents, Mr Cameron also called on broadcasters to give less airtime to extremist voices from the Muslim community. He announced new powers will come into effect for Ofom and criticised broadcasters directly,

“I know other voices may make for more explosive TV – but do exercise your judgement…and do recognise the huge power you have in shaping these debates in a positive way.” There was also criticism for universities and their student union’s for ‘not doing enough’ to prevent Islamic extremists speaking on campus due to ‘misguided liberalism’. “When David Irving goes to a

Buckingham Palace criticised the top-selling Sun tabloid on Saturday for publishing a previously unknown film from 1933 that appears to show Britain's Queen Elizabeth performing a Nazi salute as a young girl. The black-and-white film from the year Adolf Hitler came to power purports to show the future Edward VIII teaching his nieces, the current British monarch Elizabeth, aged about seven at the time, and her three-year-old sister, Princess Margaret, how to perform the salute. Dancing and smiling with little apparent understanding of the salute's significance, the two young girls are encouraged to briefly perform the raised right-arm gesture by Edward in the gardens of Balmoral, a royal estate in Scotland. The Sun newspaper published the story and the 17-second film on its website under the headline ‘Their Royal Heilnesses’. Edward also raises his arm, as does his sister-in-law, the Queen Mother.

university to deny the Holocaust – university leaders rightly come out and condemn him,” Mr Cameron added. “They don’t deny his right to speak but they do challenge what he says. “But when an Islamist extremist goes there to promote their poisonous ideology...too often university leaders look the other way through a mixture of misguided liberalism and cultural sensitivity.” He continued: “And while I am on it, I want to say something to the National Union of Students. “When you choose to ally yourselves with an organisation like CAGE, which called Jihadi John a ‘beautiful young man’ and told people to ‘support the jihad’ in Iraq and Afghanistan..…it really does, in my opinion, shame your organisation and your noble history of campaigning for justice.”

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had received death threats to her life in the wake of Indira Gandhi's assassination in October 1984, according to newlydeclassified UK government documents. Thatcher flew down to New Delhi to attend her funeral on 3rd November that year against the backdrop of at least two documented threats to her life. The UK embassy in Helsinki had received a phone call from a man with a ‘Middle Eastern or Asian accent’ who said: “I have a feeling there is going to be an attack on Thatcher, I have never been wrong before.” The message was revealed via a telegram to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office released under the 30-year declassification rule.

RESPONSE: The #FightBackStartsHere campaign aims to unite people of all and no faith to stand up against terrorism

#FightBackStartsHere Communities unite in fight against extremism Representatives from community groups and civil society organisations across the UK joined forces in the capital earlier this month as they pledged their collective support to the fight-back against all forms of extremism. Organised by the Active Change Foundation, people who signed up to the initiative have also signed an open letter publically pledging their support for the #FightBackStartsHere campaign. Speaking at the launch event Suleman Nagdi, representing the Federation of Muslim Organisations who are coordinating this nationwide initiative said it was ‘time to step up to the challenge’. “For 30 years I have worked with other communities and faiths to promote harmony and fight against all extremists,” he said. “Those who sow hate and prey on young people to encourage them to harm themselves, their families and the fabric of the communities in which they live must be stopped. Recent events have been a wake-up call. “It is great to see like minded people and community groups from all over the UK join this new movement and commit to win this battle. “The fight-back has to start right here and right now – everyone has to step up to the challenge. The fight-back starts

Knife crime on the fall

Scotland Yard states 43 women and girls

‘gone to Syria’ Forty-three women and girls are believed to have travelled to Syria from Britain in the last year, police have revealed. They have been reported missing by their families to forces around the country in the 12 months from July 2014. The women and girls are ‘all feared to have travelled to Syria, putting themselves in serious danger and leaving their families devastated’, Scotland Yard said. It indicates that females are fleeing at a rate of almost one a week. Police disclosed the figures as they launched a radio advertising campaign to encourage mothers to talk to their daughters about the dangers of making the journey. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Helen Ball said: “Syria is an extremely dangerous place - the reality of life there is far from the

image that terrorist groups actively promote to young women here in the UK. “Families and communities are terrified that their daughters may be lured into travelling there. “In some cases the appeal for women and girls may be a belief that their life will hold more meaning if they travel; it may be a misplaced sense of ‘glamour’ of marrying a fighter; or perceived difficulty as to how to reconcile their religion with modern life so that they feel compelled to follow, as they may see it, their religious obligation by joining other women in Syria. “Stories of families who have suffered the devastating consequences of loved ones travelling to Syria are sadly becoming more common. “These are young women who are highly unlikely ever to have the

option of returning home. “Our radio campaign has a clear message we are urging mothers to talk to their daughters and, if they have any concerns at all, to have the confidence to come forward to talk to police and our partners the earliest at opportunity so that we can intervene and help.” Police and security services believe at least 700 extremists have travelled to Syria, with around half thought to have returned to the UK. A number of cases have emerged in which women and children are feared to have gone to the country.

The radio adverts will mainly feature on ethnic minority stations around the country for two weeks. They encourage mothers to have open discussions with their daughters about issues such as travelling to Syria and the content they are viewing online, police said.

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK FROM 12PM TILL LATE

There were 103 fewer victims of knife-point robberies in the West Midlands last year than in the previous 12 months, figures out this week reveal. Police say a knife surrender last summer and West Midlands Police’s continuing efforts to warn young people about the dangers of carrying a weapon are behind the 11 per cent drop in offences - from 912 to 809 − between April 2014 and March 2015, compared to the same time period in the previous years. Official crime statistics also show West Midlands Police bucked the national trend of a small rise in overall knife crime, by recording a fall in offences of almost six per cent between 2013/14 and 2014/15. Knife crime in the West Midlands has dropped steadily over the last decade, with levels falling to less than half of what they were.

Many more people may be waking up during operations than previously thought, health experts have warned. The phenomenon, known as Accidental Awareness during General Anaesthesia (AAGA), is one of the most feared complications for people who are put under general anaesthesia during surgery and patients may experience sensations of choking, suffocation and panic, and even fear they are going to die. The use of muscle relaxants, which are required for safety during surgery, are likely to mean they are unable to communicate the fact that they are awake to the surgeon so they can only lie there helpless. A report by the Royal College Anaesthetists last year found around one patient in every 19,000 reports AAGA after being put under general anaesthetic, amounting to nearly 160 patients a year. But researchers said that figure was based on patients pro-actively coming forward and reporting their experiences to hospital authorities, indicating that the real number was likely to be as much as 10 times as many. They also said certain groups of people are more at risk of premature awakening, including pregnant women and patients who are morbidly obese, have certain infections, liver disease, malnutrition or are in the advanced stages of cancer due to the challenges their health issues pose to anaesthetists. Scientists in Denmark carried out a study on patients with a condition called BChE deficiency - a rare metabolic disorder characterised by prolonged paralysis after the use of

certain muscle relaxing drugs. They interviewed 123 patients with BChE deficiency who had had a general anaesthetic for surgery and found that 89 of them (72 per cent) suffered premature awakening, becoming conscious while still paralysed by neuromuscular blocking drugs. They said that when neuromuscular monitoring was used - which measures how well a patient's muscles are able to function during the surgery - 14 patients (29 per cent) suffered the same condition but when it was not used, 100 per cent of patients interviewed suffered accidental awareness and premature awakening. Professor Jennifer Hunter, vice president of the Liverpool Society of Anaesthetists, said better monitoring of neuromuscular drugs would help to protect those patients who are at risk. Separate research has found that only around half of European anaesthetists use neuromuscular monitoring. She said: “This study focused on a small group of patients with a rare genetic enzyme deficiency, but it is important to realise that other groups could be similarly affected, including pregnant women, patients with advanced cancer and those who are morbidly obese. “While the vast majority of patients suffer no complications during anaesthesia, we simply don't know how many people are affected by accidental awareness or premature awakening.” Professor Hugh Hemmings, special edition editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, where the study is published, said: “The real numbers of patients experiencing accidental awareness could easily be twice that figure. “And given the numbers of unreported cases, it could be as high as tenfold that figure, especially among the highest risk patients.”

Crematorium review The Chancellor has launched a review into crematorium facilities at last week’s budget to ensure that they are appropriate to the needs of all users and faiths. This follows representations to the Chancellor from British Hindus and Sikhs, who are concerned that current facilities are often too small, and not equipped to meet their needs. The Government wants to know more about these issues and what steps can be taken to improve existing facilities in line with current law. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said: “This is a

Chancellor listens to Hindu and Sikh communities

Budget that delivers for British Hindus and Sikhs: backing business, supporting aspiration and standing behind families that work hard. “Over the past year a number of British Hindus and Sikhs have also raised with me their concerns about cremation facilities for their communities. “They’ve told me that often the facilities are not large enough for everyone from the community to pay their respects and don’t always

pay enough regard to cultural sensitivities. “So this Budget announces a review into these facilities. We want to know more about concerns people from all faiths and none have about these facilities, so we can do more to ensure everybody can mark the passing of their loved ones appropriately. “That’s why we’ve launched this consultation and I’d urge everyone to make their views known on this important issue.” The consultation will be led by the Department for Communities and Local Government and launch in due course. It is intended to take into account the views of all faiths and members of the community. Other measures announced in the Budget, which will deliver for British Asians, include a new residence allowance that will effectively take the family home out of inheritance tax for all but the very rich; increases in the personal allowance so that work is rewarded in the tax; and backing aspiration and small businesses by cutting the cost of hiring new people through raising the employment allowance to £3,000.

Farron to lead Lib Dems

The Liberal Democrats, the former junior coalition partners of Prime Minister David Cameron, on Thursday named left-leaning Tim Farron as their new leader, two months after the party was virtually wiped out in May's British election. Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who in 2010 led the Liberal Democrats to their first ever spell in government alongside Cameron's Conservatives, stood down as leader after all but seven of his 56 colleagues lost their seats in the election. Farron, 45, the party's former president, was the bookmakers' favourite for the role. He stood against former junior health minister Norman Lamb in the vote, which was decided by the party's members. Farron, a father of four, received 56.5 percent of the vote, while Lamb received 43.5 percent, the party said. “Tim is a fantastic communicator and his energy, enthusiasm and passion will inspire and drive the Liberal Democrats back to winning ways,” party president Sal Brinton said in a statement.

Counter-terrorism raids

Fake guru robs family of jewellery A conman posing as a religious guru conned his way into a family's home before stealing their jewellery. It was the second time the bogus charity worker had been to the house in Stonor Road in the Hall Green area of Birmingham, West Midlands Police said. On the first occasion the female occupant gave him £120 after he told her he was from the local Handsworth Sikh temple and collecting for hungry children. But the man returned five days later on Tuesday 5th May, this time tricking his way into the home of the woman who was there with her two daughters. Once inside he threatened to kill the girls, one of whom is in her teens and the other in her 20s. Pc Andy Bishop said the

British police, backed by specialist armed officers, arrested three men in central England on Tuesday on suspicion of being involved in preparing acts of terrorism. Counter-terrorism officers detained one man, in his 20s, at a business address in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, shortly before 1pm. Two others, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested at houses in nearby Luton shortly afterwards, London Police said in a statement. The arrests are unusual as British police usually carry out early morning raids in counter-terrorism investigations if the action is not urgent. Armed officers were present for one of the arrests but no shots were fired. “Today's arrests and searches are part of an ongoing investigation into Islamistrelated terrorism,” the statement said. “As this is an active investigation, we are not able to release any further information at this stage.” Britain is on its second highest alert level of ‘severe’, meaning an attack is considered highly likely, mainly due to the danger the authorities say is posed by Islamic State fighters and Britons who have joined them. Last year there were more than 330 arrests for counter-terrorism offences.

terrified mother handed over £1,000 but the thief also demanded the family's jewellery making off with thousands of pounds worth of gold and gems. He said: "This man has preyed on the woman's good nature by claiming to be a religious man or guru. "I can think of no religion which would advocate such

despicable actions. "It is quite possible others have been targeted in this way and I would urge those people to come forward too." Police have issued a CCTV image of a man they want to trace in connection with the thefts and are urging anyone with information to call on 101.

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS ACTION Turkish Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, says security will be stepped up along the border with Syria

Man charged with terrorist plot on US military personnel

A man has been charged with planning a terrorist attack on American military personnel in Britain. Junead Ahmed Khan, 24, is suspected of intending to commit acts of terrorism, as well as plotting to travel to Syria alongside his uncle, 22-year-old Shazib Ahmed Khan, to join the group that calls itself Islamic State. It is believed that the target of the alleged terrorist plot may have been RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, which hosts more than 5,000 US Air Force personnel, as well as 2,000 British and American civilian staff. The attack would allegedly have involved a knife and a car. RAF Lakenheath is home to the US 48th Fighter Wing, whose F-15 Eagle tactical fighters took

‘Heinous terror attack’ kills at least 30 Turkish activists targeted by IS suicide bomber

A suspected Islamic State suicide bomber killed at least 30 people in the Turkish town of Suruc on Monday, as activists prepared for their departure to help rebuild a Syrian town. The victims, most of university-age, were part of a group which had gathered to make a statement to the local press about a trip they were planning to help rebuild Kobani. Following the blast, bodies laid beneath trees outside a cultural centre in the mostly

Kurdish town, just six miles away from where Kurdish fighters have been battling Islamic State. The attacker, who is reported to be an 18-year-old woman, was stood just behind the group when she blew herself up, causing injuries to over one hundred others. Turkey's NATO allies have been seeking tighter controls on a porous border with Syria that runs alongside Islamic State-held territories. But monitoring is difficult with 1.8 million Syrian refugees now

on the Turkish side and smuggling rife. The United States, which has an air base at Incirlik in southern Turkey, though it is not being used for its air attacks on IS forces, called the bombing a ‘heinous terror attack’. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told a news conference in Ankara 30 people had been killed. “It is...most probably a suicide bombing,” he said. “We have convened with security officials and planned the steps

that we will be taking. “Measures on our border with Syria will continue, and will be increased.” Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan condemned those responsible for what he called a ‘terrorist attack’ whilst Turkish Deputy Prime Minister, Yalcin Akdogan, added: “Such despicable terrorist attacks on Turkey's integrity and peace will never reach their goal.” The Suruc attack comes weeks after Turkey deployed additional troops and equipment along parts of its border with Syria, concerned about the risk of spillover as fighting between Kurdish forces, rebel groups, Syrian government troops and Islamic State militants intensifies. An explosion also occurred in Kobani shortly afterwards, which a monitoring group blamed on a car bomb. A spokesman for Syrian Kurdish forces, known as the YPG, said two fighters died. Turkey's leaders have said they do not plan any unilateral military incursion into Syria but have also said they will do whatever is necessary to defend the country's borders.

part in operations in Libya in 2011. The two men were remanded in custody when they appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court. They are due to appear at the Central Criminal Courts in London on 10th August. The two men were arrested a week ago in a joint operation between Bedfordshire Police and the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorist Command Unit. Armed police were involved in one of the arrests. Police say searches were carried out at two addresses in the Luton area as part of the operation which forms part of an ongoing investigation into Islamist-related terrorism.

Al Jazeera airs satirical video about US

A video posted on an Al Jazeera YouTube channel over the fourth of July weekend mocks Americans for dubious "achievements" in obesity, pornography production and gun ownership. The satirical item, under two minutes long, was produced out of San Francisco by a digital arm of the Qatar-based Al Jazeera news network. It has not been seen on television, including on the beleaguered Al Jazeera America channel. Debuting on the weekend set aside for celebrating the birth of the U.S., the video is entitled "Americans Show Why USA is the #1 Country in the World." It begins with a man who explains that most people probably know that Americans lead the world in Olympic medals won, Nobel laureates and billionaires. Then it goes on to list other benchmarks, including the large number of people imprisoned and the amount of guns owned. The U.S. also has a leading percentage of obese people, one man said. "A third of us can't even see our own toes," he said. A man holding red, white and blue balloons claims that Americans make 89 percent of the world's pornography. "That makes

porn as American as church on Sunday," the man said. At its end, a man in a stars-and-stripes hat said that "if anybody ever tells you that American is not that great, just say, 'God bless the country with the most deaths by lawnmowers.'" A guitar plays "America the Beautiful" in the background. The Al Jazeera Plus network began in 2013, and is described on its website as a "global news community for the connected generation." The outfit says that its goal is to "highlight human struggles and achievements, empower impassioned voices and challenge the status quo." A spokeswoman for Al Jazeera America said that the channel is editorially distinct from the television network. "One of the things that defines America is free speech," said Jocelyn Austin, network spokeswoman. "The Americans in San Francisco who made this July Fourth video are entitled to speak about their country. Similar videos have been done in this style about issues in other countries, and the network airs all opinions without necessarily endorsing them."

JUNAID JAMSHED: The man who sells ‘designer’ suits to women makes sexist remark… again…

What they say...

Junaid Jamshed in hot water again over yet another sexist and seemingly demeaning and dismissive remark against women. The ex Pakistan pop group Vital Signs singer-turned-holy man-turned fashion designer-turned TV preacher, made another blunder as he appeared on a television show and stated that "God dislikes that any woman should be named [in the Quran]." Cue furore, the internet blew up over the remark, calling it out for being misogynistic, irresponsible and just plain wrong, with many correcting him and pointing out that women are not referred to in the first name as the ultimate sign of respect. Junaid Jamshed was in the spotlight last year when he was accused of making blasphemous remarks in one of his televised sermons. On another occasion he was publically slammed for suggesting that Prophet Muhammed’s (PBUH) wife Hazrat Aisha (RA) lied to him about feeling ill and mocked her in a Youtube video. This time, it appears that he felt he had to correct his mistake quickly, as he took to his Facebook page and issued a 'clarification. ' In the carefully edited video, he explains that he did not intend to offend or belittle women at all. He cites Quranic verses that relate the high stature of women. However, he closes with the sexist remark: "A woman is a diamond. Diamonds are meant to be hidden." As Social media exploded over his statements, with several prominent figures jumping in. Many people questioned the hypocrisy of Jamshed putting women down despite his commercial designer-wear label branded with his name, mainly targeted at women. Many were simply astounded by the sexism of the statement, and made their feelings known.

Villagers behead woman accused of ‘witchcraft’ An elderly woman has been accused of practising witchcraft, stripped naked and beheaded in Assam, India. 63-year-old Purni Orang had been blamed for the illnesses in the tribal settlement. Seven people, including two women, have been arrested over her killing. Witch hunts targeting women are common in parts of India and a number of those accused are killed every year. Indian police say nearly 90 people, mostly women, have been beheaded, burnt alive or stabbed to death after such accusations in the last six years.

Experts say superstitious beliefs are behind some of these attacks, but there are occasions when people – especially widows – are targeted for their land and property. An Assam police officer said: "Branding women as witches is particularly prevalent among tribal communities and tea plantation workers in the state. “People in a village in Sonitpur district were falling sick, and some of them blamed Purni Orang for their condition. After that they branded her a witch and killed her.”

Court rejects appeal of 1993 Bombay blasts convict

The Supreme Court in New Delhi threw out a last-minute appeal by Yakub Memon - the only person to be condemned to death for a series of bombings in Mumbai in 1993, clearing the way for his execution this month after two decades in jail. He is due to be hanged on 30th July. The blasts in March 1993 ripped through Mumbai, then known as Bombay, killing at least 257 people at separate landmarks, including

the Bombay Stock Exchange, a popular cinema and two crowded markets. Police consider Memon's brother "Tiger" Memon and mafia don Dawood Ibrahim to be the main masterminds behind the attack, carried out to avenge the destruction of the Babri mosque by Hindu zealots in 1992. Both remain in hiding, reportedly in Pakistan. Others originally charged in relation to the attack had their sentences reduced to life

imprisonment in 2013. But Memon was found by the court to be the "driving spirit" behind the attacks, and his 2007 death sentence was upheld. While Tiger Memon has been in hiding since 1993, Yakub Memon decided to return to India from Pakistan in 1994, protesting his innocence. He was detained shortly afterwards in circumstances that remain unclear: he has said he turned himself in, but police claimed an arrest.

THE LATEST ENTERTAINMENT AND CELEBRITY NEWS FROM BOLLYWOOD & HOLLYWOOD

Bollywood star Salman Khan's latest release ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ had a strong opening weekend over the Eid holiday weekend, proving that he has box-office drawing power despite a recent conviction in a hit-and-run accident case. Deemed as one of India's most

bankable stars, Salman, 49, was convicted and sentenced to five years in the 2002 hit-and-run case, in which the actor, alleged to be driving under the influence, ran over and killed a homeless man and injured four others in Mumbai. But despite the legal

controversy, Salman’s film, coproduced by his own banner ‘Salman Khan Films’ and distributed by Eros International worldwide, crossed the one billion rupee (about £10.2 million) mark in its first three days of release.

Salma Agha

sings after two decades

The nostalgic haunting voice of classic songs like ‘Dil ke armaan’ and ‘Fiza bhi hai’ will soon be heard again. The mesmerisingly beautiful Pakistani vocalist Salma Agha, who last sang for a Bollywood film in 1994, has now sung for the first Indian Norwegian collaboration film ‘Dunno Y 2... Life Is A Moment’. It is a sequel of internationally acclaimed ‘Dunno Y... Na Jaane Kyun’ which won ten international awards. Salma Agha, who is extremely choosy in singing for films, agreed to sing in this film only on the condition that the music and the lyrics of the song should touch her heart. When she heard the song she instantly felt it touched her soul. This song is a Sufi Ghazal, "Aaina haseen hua hai, ishq aye ashshaah mein, tere hone ki aas mein"...with a Pakistani flair and is filmed with Kapil Sharma, Yuvraaj Parashar and Pakistani actress Sadia Khan. The film also stars Zeenat Aman, Pakistani actress Meera and European actors. Nikhil Kamath has composed the song and lyrics are by Vimal Kashyap. ‘Dunno Y 2... Life Is A Moment’ has a mix of Indian and European singers and composers. It is directed by Norwegian director Tonje Gjevjon and Indian director Sanjay Sharma.

The sequel is a musical romantic comedy and is in three languages Hindi, English and Norwegian. Recently it premiered at one of the world's most prestigious venues the Opera House of Oslo. It received a warm reception from the audience and got positive reviews from critics. The premiere was attended by top politicians and famous actors of Norway.

No babies for Kareena yet Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor, who married Saif Ali Khan almost three years ago, has expressed her desire to become a mother someday but not for a while yet. "As of now there are no plans (to have children) and I am very clear about it. Of course I will be a mother someday but not for the next two or three years. It is not even a thought," Kareena, who is basking in the success of "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", said. After getting married to Saif in October 2012, the 34-year-old actress continued working in all kind of films. The duo tied the knot after a five-year courtship. "Despite being married, I chose to do good entertaining films including commercial films. It is difficult to balance. “It is important for an actress to do

everything," she said. Kareena, daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita, has been in the industry for 16 years now and says when she looks back at her career, she feels proud of her journey in filmdom. "Playing Anil Kapoor's wife (in "Bewafa") to Arjun Kapoor's partner in director R Balki's upcoming film, for me it is a journey. I am still working with all the Khans in the industry. I was working from a very young age," she said. According to Kareena, she thinks that she is the only actress who balances commercial and off beat films and says she will continue to experiment. "I am not an insecure person. I am happy that after so many years I am still working, I am happy, I am independent, I am married. I would like to be an example for many young girls... that they can be married and still flourish in their career," Kareena said. "I don't have any fear apart from the fact that I have to lose my loved ones. I don't care about my position and all that but family does matter," the actress added.

Get set to witness all new avatar of Shah Rukh Khan

For years we loved Bollywood king Shah Rukh Khan’s inimitable style of romancing on-screen, charming with his flattering words or wooing women with his impeccable style in copious romantic flicks. Though it’s pretty habitual seeing him sporting beards, surma (eyeliner) and dhoti, we were pleasantly surprised to see a fresh invention of character in his lately released ‘Raees’ teaser. Right from the opening shot

with his voiceover to the introduction of his character to the way he carries himself throughout the teaser, Shah Rukh Khan is a total revelation. Though we have seen the superstar essaying negative roles, in the beginning of ‘Raees’ it seems to be a completely different outing for SRK. Not only his look but the kind of role Shah Rukh plays in the film is a never-seen before one. It looks like that with this film the other King Khan is all set to

The public-funded Doordarshan's Kisan channel was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May. Reports circulated that Amitabh charged to endorse DD Kisan, amid suggestions that the marketing agency had a tough time in getting the celebrity to do the campaign. "I wish to state that I have not entered into any contract with Doordarshan, on the endorsement of their channel DD Kisan, and neither have I received any money from them," the 72-year-old said in a statement. "I worked with the advertising agency Lowe Lintas on the campaign for DD Kisan, and have not entered into any contract with them either, nor have I received any money from Lintas," he added. The cine icon, who himself got the farmer tag in 2010 when he bought the land in a Muzzaffarnagar village Kakori, added that endorsing the channel was his pro bono act. "My 'deliverables' on this campaign have been executed by me many days ago. I work pro bono on various issues and DD Kisan Channel is one of them. If there is any evidence or proof to the contrary, please forward them to me for verification," the actor added.

Khush

British Asian singer Mithun set to return with new single British Asian singer Mithun born and raised in London, began singing at the young of seven, where he was introduced and taught music from his grandfather. His linguistic talents include singing in Hindi and English but also in Punjabi, Bengali and Korean. Having released two singles worldwide, Mithun says his passion for music stemmed from a young age where he used to hear his grandfather sing classical music and took inspiration and guidance. In 2007 he had his first radio debut in London based station, Club Asia and wanted to continue getting his music around the world. Mithun is a talented young

artist who not only sings in a variety of languages but also writes the lyrics for his songs. In 2010 he collaborated with the respected music producer and Punjabi Singer Bee 2 for Kaun Hai Voh which was appreciated by a global audience. Khush produced by Knightstar (Bhavik Pattani) has a catchy beat which will definitely capture Hindi music fans across the globe. Mithun wanted to make something different to a typical heart-break song. Mithun says: “Khush is a positive message directed to people who have long

distant relationships, or break up. So, it’s just a message saying no hard feelings when they broke up and wishing each other all the happiness wherever they are.” Khush is set to release worldwide 6th August 2015

A whip smart and uproarious satire

This month marks the release of ‘Bangistan’, a whip smart and uproarious satire on fundamentalism. Bangistan is a comic tale with a strong underlying message highlighting the futility of violence, religious divisions, cultural prejudice, and promoting the message of peace, religious unity and harmony in society. Directed by Karan Anshuman, "Bangistan" tells the story of two unlikely terrorists, the antitheses of each other, with a common destructive goal, essayed by talented Indian film actors Riteish Deshmukh (Ek Villain, Housefull, Lai Bhaari), Pulkit Samrat (Fukrey, Dolly Ki Doli), and Chandan Roy Sanyal (Kaminey, D-Day). Bollywood beauty Jacqueline Fernandez will appear in a cameo. The music has been penned by Indian composer, music producer and musician Ram Sampath (Delhi Belly, Talaash, and Fukrey). The movie revolves around rival rabblerousing ragtag organisations, Al-Kaam Tamam and Maa Ka Dal. They recruit and brainwash Hafeez and Praveen to disrupt the International Peace Conference in Krakow, Poland, to ensure that the group that they represent is allowed to continue to wield its local influence. For the mission, both men decide to swap their identities and faiths and, rather amusingly, end up sharing an apartment together when they arrive in Krakow to carry

out their mission. However, despite its serious subject matter, Bangistan provides comic fodder throughout and ensures audiences have enough laughs along the way. This summer audiences will be entertained and educated in equal measure as the hysterically funny ‘Bangistan’ comes to cinema screens internationally on 31st July 2015.

says the press is out to malign her

Hema Malini’s recent brutal road accident, has had the Indian press sprawling all over the story, some indicating that she and her chauffer had been dismissive about the death of a two-year-old girl who was travelling in her father’s car. On 8th July, Hema waded into a nightmare of a 'tweetstorm' by holding the father of the two-year-old, Sonam, responsible for the recent accident involving her in Rajasthan. The yesteryears actress and BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) MP, whilst was making her way to her constituency, involved in a brutal accident in which her Mercedes collided with a Suzuki Alto, near Dausa district in Rajasthan on 2nd July. Her driver was arrested. Dausa police, which is investigating the case, contradicted the claim of the BJP MP. DSP Rajesh Tyagi said: "As far as we could understand, the driver of the Mercedes in which Hema Malini was travelling was at fault. He was driving recklessly. The speed of the Mercedes was nothing less than 150kmph which caused difficulty in applying brakes on time." The actress tweeted on 8th July: "My heart goes out to the child. How I wish the girl's

father had followed traffic rules - thn this accident could have been averted & the lil one's life safe!" Her tweet has dismayed the Khandelwal family recovering from their injuries and coming to terms with losing their daughter due to the crash. The Khandelwal’s have said that a word of sympathy could have helped heal their wounds but not the way she (Hema) was presenting the story. What has caused Indian journo’s to go into a finger-pointing frenzy was the death of little Sonam and the unanswered question as to why Hema didn’t take the little girl and the injured Khandelwal family to the hospital with her. Khandelwal's cousin Ashok Gupta, said: "She (Hema) might be a big shot but instead of praying for the speedy recovery of the family, she has entered into this blame game. I will request her to keep calm, take care of her injury and pray for our family as we have already lost a little girl." Meanwhile Hema's daughter Isha Deol had promised financial aid to the family after her mother was discharged from the Fortis hospital in Jaipur.

Teenage pop star

on the rise A prolific teen sensation ready for her fifth single release in less than a year, Shannon K is a pop vocalist whose star is quickly shooting upwards. Having found her perfect pure pop sound with March single ‘Just Another Boy’, she is now ready to further develop her new approach with the brand new single ‘Lose Control’. Composed by Matt Knight and Andy Whitmore, with lyrics from the excellent Rosie Penn, the single is a feel-good treat, capturing the spirit and freedom of the upcoming summer months. It’s the first time Shannon has released a single with such pure, summer vibes, and the

infectious melodies and great production very much get you in the mood for the sunshine. With ‘Lose Yourself’, Shannon K continues to mark herself out as one of the most versatile young artists on the independent scene today. Previous singles such as antidrugs tune ‘Just Say No’ and the festive track ‘Christmas Song’ first marked her out as a talented vocalist, but with this year’s quick punch of ‘Just Another Boy’, 'MOM' (released on Mother's Day, lyrics by Brian Bogdanovic) which is an emotional track that really showcases Shannon's vocal ability, and now ‘Lose Control’, she is showing herself to be a real contender.

The quality of her songs, which was there from the very beginning, only improves with each single release. It should come as no surprise to learn that she grew up with a parent who knows what it takes to make it in the music industry. A glittering career as a vocalist in Bollywood has seen her father Kumar Sanu win a total of 69 awards and he has been her inspiration since day one. But now, thanks to her developing mainstream sound and with many years ahead of her, Shannon K has every chance of eclipsing all those accolades – and with more top pop singles on the way, we wouldn’t bet against her.

FILM: Tanu Weds Manu Returns OU T NOW DIRECTED BY: Aanand Rai GENRE: Comedy STAR CAST: Kangana Ranaut, Madhavan, Jimmy Shergill, Deepak Dobriyal

FILM: Dil Dhadakne Do OUT NOW DIRECTED BY: Zoya Akhtar GENRE: Drama STAR CAST: Ranveer Singh, Shefali Shah, Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, Rahul Bose

The sequel to the hit 2011 comedy brings the main actors and director back together for another slice of comedy gold. Four years after Manu met and wed Tanu in the hit original film (titled, unsurprisingly, Tanu Weds Manu), the lovable couple are back. Not only are the original stars back, with Kangana Ranaut as Tanuja 'Tanu' Trivedi and Madhavan as Manoj 'Manu' Sharma, but the original film's director, Aanand Rai, is back too. Although the pair are now settled in London, Manu is busy working hard and Tanu is bored. Horribly homesick, Tanu decides to fly back to India, but is closely followed by her beloved husband. The only problem is though, when Manu returns to India, it's Tanu's doppelganger - a Haryanvi athlete! - that he meets and falls in love with. Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan are reprising their quirky-sweet roles in this romantic drama which, the actress says, will show the tricky grounds of a marriage. “I hear so many love stories every year but no one wants to go to the tricky grounds of a marriage. What we all see is happy ending and not what happens after marriage and what it takes to fall in love again,” says Kangana. “This film will convey that. It’s an urban, relatable issue and a beautiful love story. It can easily be a real life story.”

A dysfunctional Punjabi family embark on a cruise holiday around the Mediterranean in this new romantic drama by director Zoya Akhtar. Family differences are exposed on the high seas as businessman Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) and wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) take their son Kabir (Ranveer Singh) and daughter Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) on a cruise holiday. After Kabir reveals his plans to become a pilot rather than taking over the family business, salvation comes in the form of Farah (Anushka Sharma), who has left home to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer. Also featuring in the all-star ensemble cast are Farhan Akhtar, who plays entrepreneur Ayesha's ex-lover, and Rahul Bose, who makes a special appearance as her estranged husband.

FILM: ABCD 2 OUT NOW DIRECTED BY: Remo D Souza GENRE: Drama STAR CAST: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Allu Arjun, Prabhu Deva, Lauren Gottlieb, Raghav Juyal, Dharmesh Yelande, Remo D Souza ABCD 2 is a grand 3D Dance Film, which travels to the vibrant city of Las Vegas and is a bittersweet journey of love, friendship, betrayal, honour and redemption. The story traces the journey of an Indian dance troupe, a motley assortment of boys and girls who come from the backstreets of a Mumbai suburb; their rise to fame, sudden downfall and then their heroic attempt to seek vindication by regaining their lost glory and pride. The sequel to one of India's biggest dance movies of all time takes the troupe to the international stage. After the enormous success of India's first 3D dance film, ‘ABCD’ (Any Body Can Dance), Disney India and world-renowned choreographer turned director Remo D'Souza are promising bigger thrills and spills for the sequel. Reuniting the two lead stars (Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor) with their mentor Vishnu (Prabhu Deva), the story follows the Indian dance troupe to Las Vegas for an international dance competition. But with the stakes higher and much tougher competition, can the boys and girls from the Mumbai suburbs go back to India as champions? Will they be able to achieve success at the biggest International platform? Will they make their beloved Vishnu Sir proud, who is himself struggling with his not so perfect past?

McLaren hails record profit British supercar maker McLaren has celebrated record sales and financial results for 2014. The Woking-based firm has more than tripled its pre-tax profit from 2013, the first year the fledgeling company turned a profit, from £4.5m to £15m. McLaren insiders attribute the uplift to sales of its P1 hypercar, which is sold out in both road-going

and track-only GTR guises. The 500-strong limited run of track-focused 675LTs, based on the core 650S model, is fully sold out as well. With 1,649 cars sold last year and around 1,800 predicted for 2015 thanks to the expected introduction of the first of the company's more affordable 'Sports Series' models in the autumn, business bosses are

toasting promising times. “To achieve what we have in four years is probably unprecedented in the industry,” said Mike Flewitt, McLaren CEO, before thanking the P1 specifically. “What it has done for us is show what this company is capable of, and I believe this is the best driving car there is. The other thing it has done for us is communicate what

McLaren is all about.” Mr Flewitt also confirmed that McLaren will not succumb to the potentially lucrative “distraction” of building an SUV, and will continue to base all production at the McLaren Technical Centre in Woking. “This will remain our production centre,” he said, “and we have no plans to build cars anywhere other

than here in Woking.” This year alone the company will take on 200 new staff, and has recently grown its quality control division by 80 people in a drive to ensure the absolute highest manufacturing quality associated, the firm said, with British craftsmanship. McLaren hopes to be building 4,000 cars a year by 2017.

Drivers in the UK are risking breakdowns and major bills as only 29 per cent make a plan to cover the cost of car repairs. That number is made of of 15 per cent who budget in advance for maintenance and repair work, while 14 per cent say they have a warranty that pays for this work. A study by Allianz found that 29

Two thirds of drivers don’t plan for repairs

per cent of drivers say they would have to dip into savings to meet the cost of repairs. A further 23 per cent reveal they would be forced to use their credit card to cover this type of cost. Liz Grindell, Head of Warranty for

Allianz Global Assistance in the UK, said: ‘It’s clear from our survey that most people fail to plan ahead for car repairs, with a small minority of people budgeting for extra costs and even fewer having suitable warranty cover. How many people would be

happy having to use their savings to fix their car rather than to pay for a holiday or splash out on that new gadget or pair of shoes? ‘The cost of owning and running a car doesn’t stop after paying for the insurance, MOT, road tax and fuel,

89

but it’s easy to forget the added expenses such as new tyres and ongoing repairs and maintenance. And of course, with 79 per cent of cars now making it to 12 years on the road, and the average age predicted to rise to 7.95 years in 2015, costs to keep cars running efficiently will rise proportionally.’

A ‘Smart’ concept The new smart forfour is a pretty effective point-to-point machine. It can drive from London to Aberdeen non-stop for as little as £39. Its four occupants will be comfy on the 540-mile journey too, even if they're significantly taller than the car is wide. The smart forfour is tiny on the outside, yet clever engineering means its interior is vast and is packed with technology to help make the journey fun, relaxing and safe. It stands a good chance of being the ultimate commuting machine, were it not for one obvious rival. The forfour is reliant on roads, meaning the humble train has an

obvious advantage in that it can get from point-to-point through a more direct route. When it comes to outright speed and ruthless efficiency, it's one-nil to the train. Nicknamed the smart 'forrail', it might appear like a lightly modified smart for four but it's, in fact, a fully certified, mini-train. The smart's tridion safety cell allows it immense strength, which underpins the forrail. No matter how simple Roger Moore made it look in his Mercedes-Benz 250 SE, removing the tyres and placing it on tracks isn't really possible in real life - the car would fall off almost immediately. Six months of engineering work and sophisticated CAD modelling

later, the smart forrail is equipped with unique, solid steel wheels each measuring 22-inches in diameter and weighing 80 kg, allowing it the traction it needs on rails. Designed by Interfleet, a specialised British train engineering business based in Derby, the team - who usually work on 16-litre, 70-tonne diesel locomotives, had to employ a new approach to the challenge presented by a 999 cc, one-tonne smart. The agile steering, which in road use allows the smart forfour to handle as if it's on rails, was disconnected by engineers, to allow it to handle being driven

on rails. To avoid any steering movement, aluminium supports were welded between the axles meaning the wheels are locked in position. Under close supervision, the smart forrail tentatively took to the tracks at the weekend on the privately operated Bluebell Railway - providing a few, bemused commuters the chance to avoid the congested roads without having to leave the comfort of the compact four-seater.

The 10-mile stretch of railway, cutting a direct route through Sussex, represented a significant challenge for the smart forrail, and yet the smallest train on the tracks took the trip in its stride, and the regular enthusiasts (present for a model railway exhibition) somewhat by surprise. Despite challenging engineering obstacles, the experiment steadfastly refused to come off the rails. The best of both worlds were combined - albeit briefly - to create arguably the most efficient, and fun, commuting machine in the world.

DVLA summer auction 1,600 plates up for grabs at three-day event

L20RD 488 FER CL65 AMG

DVLA Personalised Registrations’ summer auction looks set to be something of a supercar battle thanks to some supercar-related lots within the 1,600 up for grabs during the threeday sale being held at MercedesBenz World in Surrey. The registration 488 FER, which has a reserve of £1,200, will be auctioned on Wednesday, July 22, and is clearly a direct tag towards the recently revealed Ferrari 488. For Porsche fans the Agency is auctioning 997 RS (£2,200) and then there’s 570 S (£2,500) – the perfect moniker for the soon-to-beavailable McLaren 570S – both of which will be auctioned on the third and final day. Putting those sales into perspective, in 2014 the registration 650 S – reflecting the McLaren 650S – proved something of a sensation for DVLA Personalised Registrations when it sold for a

£40,250 total and the Porscherelated registration 993 RS sold for £30,000. In December 2009, the registration 458 FER, bought specifically for the Ferrari 488’s predecessor the 458 Italia, sold for little under £22,000. Of course, in fitting with the superb surroundings of MercedesBenz World, there are scores of Mercedes-linked registrations included in the auction such as CL65 AMG (£700), SL65 AMG (£700) and SLS 62L (£700). Matthew Dainton, of DVLA Personalised Registrations, said: “Personalised registrations with direct links to supercars always prove hotly contested sales and, well, there aren’t many names bigger than Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren and Mercedes-Benz. Here we have lots reflecting cars in the same auction.” There are, of course, a whole host of personalised registrations

included in the sale to suit all tastes and budgets. For coffee lovers there’s BAR 157A (£250) and COS 57A (£300), for equestrians there’s GAL 110P (£250), for rowers and sailors there’s RE64 TTA (£700) and for those looking for a specific name, DVLA Personalised Registrations is offering S151 NGH (£250), WA11 ABY (£700), and 80 LLY (£1,200) to list just three. Registered bidders who attend the three-day event being held at the Mercedes-Benz World complex will be given free access to its museum and be entitled to free ‘hot lap’ passenger rides in some of the most powerful and glamorous cars currently produced by Mercedes. Successful bidders who prefer not to immediately assign their personalised registration to a vehicle can do so safe in the knowledge it will not cost them a penny to do so. Previously, personalised registration buyers would have had 12 months from the date of purchase to assign their registration to a vehicle, after that they had to pay an annual £25 retention fee. However, in March DVLA scrapped the annual certificate retention fee, ensuring customers can simply hold on to their personalised registration without fear of incurring any further costs.

Lighter in weight but still the most powerful Boxster ever made

The wraps have been taken off one of the most gratifying cars ever produced – with the second generation Porsche Boxster Spyder marking a new edition of the purist roadster. The guys at Porsche state that it’s the most powerful and fastest Boxster ever created. With 375 horsepower - 45 more than the Boxster GTS and 10 fewer than the Cayman GT4 - from a naturally aspirated, 3.8-litre flat-six borrowed from the 911 Carrera S and a top speed of 180 mph, the numbers back up the boast. The larger, more-powerful engine also is shared with the GT4, and it trumps the 3.4-litre unit from the S and GTS. The little beauty accelerates from a standstill to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds, which is half a second faster than the Boxster GTS with a manual transmission. The unwavering standard of the North Loop of the Nürburgring proves Porsches claims convincingly - it takes seven minutes and 47 seconds for the Boxster Spyder to come around to the starting/finishing line again. The distinctive design of the Boxster Spyder includes stylistic elements that recall legendary sports and race cars from Porsche. For example, as a tribute to the 718 Spyder from the 1960s, the new Boxster Spyder has two prominent bubbles behind the headrests known as streamliners - that stretch over the long trunk lid. The new roll-over bar trim creates harmonious styling. The manually folding hood recalls earlier roadsters. The fins that extend rearwards give the side profile its characteristic design. The front and rear sections of the Boxster Spyder come from the

Automotive icon

Cayman GT4 and underscore the vehicle's status as a highperformance sports car. They make the new top roadster ten millimeters longer and eleven millimeters lower than the Boxster GTS. Particularly striking are the three large air intakes with black screens at the front that supply cooling air to the three heat exchangers behind them. With lightweight sports bucket seats are designed for drivers with sporty ambitions. More so than in any other Boxster, the interior of the Spyder conveys an atmosphere of pure driving pleasure. The steering wheel, with a diameter of 360 mm, has already proven itself in the Cayman GT4, and the shorter gear shift lever enables very rapid gear shifts. In keeping with the model's

purist design, standard equipment includes neither a radio nor an air conditioner in order to reduce weight. In place of a radio, there is a compartment for storing small items. However, any of the optional Boxster audio systems - up to a Burmester sound system - as an option. An air conditioner can also be ordered as optional equipment, as can the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with all of its special features, for instance. The color black defines the interior ambiance with many elements in Alcantara. The door opener straps are reminiscent of classic race cars. Trim strips are painted in the exterior color customers can select from a total of ten colors. Particularly striking among the optional equipment

features is the Spyder Classic package, which Porsche has bundled exclusively for the top model of the Boxster family. In this package, garnet-red leather is used to upholster the top of the instrument panel, the seats and the sides of the center console. As a genuine roadster, the Boxster Spyder offers a traditional sports-car driving experience at today's performance levels. The roadster package is completed by a lightweight design hood, which is manually opened and closed and is only latched and unlatched electrically. Putting the hood up is a cinch: you simply open the rear top compartment lid and fold out the hood. The driver inserts the fins on the trunk lid and simply pushes a button to pull the top tight to the

windshield frame. To take the top down, these steps are performed in reverse order. The purist equipment features of the Boxster Spyder are the result of a systematic lightweight approach. At 1,315 kilograms, the Spyder is the lightest sports car in the Boxster family. The large boot lid, for instance, is made of aluminum, and the lightweight design hood with its unheated polymer rear window weighs eleven kilograms less than the usual automatic hood of the Boxster. The results are clearly noticeable to the driver. This car's center of gravity is lower than that of any other Boxster, and its weight-topower ratio has been reduced to 3.5 kilograms per hp. This makes the Boxster Spyder handle as nimbly as a go-cart, yet it accelerates as vehemently as a high-performance sports car. Hence, the mid-engine roadster from Porsche fully plays out the advantages of its driving dynamics concept. The wide 20-inch wheels, which are reserved exclusively for the Spyder, further enhance the lateral dynamic benefits of the modified sport chassis that is based on the suspension of the Boxster GTS. The front wheels are 8.5 inches wide, and the rear wheels 10.5 inches. Power distribution to the two rear wheels is via a classic mechanical differential lock that is part of the Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) system. The locking effect is 22 per cent under power and 27 per cent in overrun. The brake system has higher performance than systems in the other Boxster models. Brake calipers and rotors come from the 911 Carrera S.

Wholesale diesel price drop fails to reach forecourts

Diesel wholesale prices have dropped below those for unleaded, new research has revealed, but despite this it's still much more expensive on the forecourt. The RAC's Fuel Watch report for June shows that diesel wholesale prices are the equivalent of 1-3p cheaper per litre, but the average diesel price per litre is currently 120p compared to petrol's 117p. Some retailers have reportedly reduced diesel prices slightly, but the RAC is aware of none that have taken the price of diesel below that of petrol, suggesting that retailers running on “wafer-thin” margins on petrol are being forced to compensate with higher diesel prices. RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “We as a nation of motorists are far more focused on petrol prices and therefore there is a perceived benefit from a retailer’s point of view in keeping petrol prices lower for the country’s 20m petrol car owners than it is for the 10m-plus diesel car drivers.” “While there are twice as many petrol cars on the road, the increase in diesel usage shown in government statistics and the new car sales figures which show more than 50% of cars and light commercial vehicles leaving the showroom are powered by diesel, confirm that we are increasingly relying on diesel for both business and private use. “While retailers are obviously free to choose how much they charge for petrol and diesel, we believe that motorists deserve to be treated fairly and that means forecourt prices that reflect the wholesale market.” The company is calling for a 5p drop in diesel prices to reflect the current wholesale market value of the fuel. In May alone, the government brought in 2.2bn in revenue from the sale of all forecourt fuels.

Hydrogen-powered Toyota tops 300 miles per tank A Toyota powered by hydrogen has become the first of its kind to pass the 300 miles per tank mark in official tests. The Mirai's combined fuel economy of 80.5 mpg makes it good for 312 miles on a single fill-up. That makes it the longestrange zero-emission production car anywhere in the world, potentially paving the way for development of greater refuelling infrastructure in the developed world. Jim Lentz, Toyota North America CEO said: “Toyota realised in the early 90s that electrification was key to the future of the automobile. “Just as Prius introduced hybrid-electric vehicles to millions of customers nearly 20 years ago, Mirai is now poised to usher in a new era of efficient, hydrogen transportation.” A Toyota press release calls the Mirai “the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, a four-door saloon with performance that competes with traditional internal combustion engines. “Instead of using petrol, Mirai

TEAM OF THE WEEK: 1 Stop Tyres Shield winners – Friends

Friends are Shield Champions 1 Stop Tyres Shield Final: Friends (299-7) v Shaheen (187) After suffering a loss in their league clash with Shaheen just two weeks ago, Friends CC bounced back in the perfect manner on Sunday as they defeated the same opponents to be named the first ever 1 Stop Tyres Shield champions. The tournament, set up for sides who were knocked out of the Yasmin and Shaid Cup in the early stages, concluded with what was tipped to be a close affair, yet after opting to bat first, the eventual victors put themselves firmly in the driving seat. Smashing 299 runs with the loss of just seven wickets in their 45 overs, Friends’ attack proved too much to handle for the bowlers who were unable to take all the wickets. Despite the significant margin of victory, things didn’t start well for Friends as they lost new signing, Atif Kamran, for just four runs. The big hitter had been prolific with the bat in recent weeks yet he was bowled by Naveed Hafeez to give Shaheen a dream start. It was a combination of young

Butt century guides Section-A high fliers to cup glory

talent and experience which then steadied the ship for Friends with Qasim Baig (79) and Siam Butt (107) putting on a stand of 92 between them to put their side in a commanding position. Ali Adnan continued the momentum with his 75 runs, building a partnership of 112 runs with Butt, who had a final to remember with the bat. Despite not taking a wicket in the game, Shaheen’s captain, Mohammed Javed was the most economical with the ball, giving away just 26 runs with some tactical

bowling. Needing 300 to win, Shaheen knew their job with the bat was going to be a hard one and with only two players – Imran Dawood (33) and Binyy Haider (33), breaking the 30-mark, it was all but impossible to mount a comeback. Eventually bowled out for 187, with Mohammed Maroof (3-25) and Imran Shah (2-19) starring with the ball, Shaheen will have to wait another year before attempting to get their hands on some silverware. Friends meanwhile will be

hoping that success in the Shield will give their side merit for a place in the Yasmin and Shaid Cup next term. Yasmin and Shaid Cup Semi-Finals: Away from the 1 Stop Tyres Shield final and the semi-finals of the Yasmin and Shaid Cup were being played out, with two dominant victories for the pretournament favourites. Keighley RZM (328-4) thumped Heaton Park (144) to set up a clash with OnQ in the final, with the latter overcoming White Rose after

bowling them out for 145 respectively. Waleed Akhtar was the man of the moment for league leaders Keighley, hitting an unbeaten 137 with the bat, lasting the entire innings. In reply, Heaton Park’s Shoukat Ali (71*) attempted to lead his side to an unlikely comeback before his side were bowled out almost 200 runs short of their target. Some good leg spin bowling from Shahid Nadeem (4–20) ensured Keighley remain on track for a domestic double. Meanwhile, the match-up between White Rose and Onq was short lived with the hosts managing to score just 145 runs on the board - better than expected at one stage as they lost six quick wickets. Amjid Hussain (50*) was the pick of the batters for White Rose whilst Tuseif Arshad’s figures (4-19) for OnQ helped his club secure their place in the final. OnQ and Keighley will now face off in the cup final at Headingley County Ground on 9th August with free entrance on offer to all who wish to watch the league’s two best teams go head-to-head.

BOXING SKILL VS WILL – KLITSCHKO AND FURY FIGHT CONFIRMED

By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

British undefeated boxer Tyson Fury is due to take on the king of heavyweight boxing and the universally recognised champion of the world Wladimir Klitschko on October 24, 2015. Fury is probably the most flamboyant and cocky boxer I have seen in recent years but he has a firm belief in his ability and supreme confidence to go with it. He is a classical trash talker and Klitschko will have to face the “music” in the build-up to this fight as Fury will no doubt do everything possible to annoy the champion and gain the mental and psychological edge over him. Klitschko’s last opponent was another undefeated heavyweight prospect called Bryant Jennings who was unanimously beaten over 12 rounds by the champion. Klitschko gained a remarkable 18th straight heavyweight world title defence in the process. Klitschko is a fighter that uses caution first when battling it out against his opponents and uses his huge reach and height advantage to keep the fight at a distance and under complete control, but this fighting style has failed to impress many boxing viewers who have labelled the Ukraine fighter as “boring.” However Klitschko has made it clear that he is not concerned about the negative public views about him as long as he keeps winning and neutralising his opponent’s ability to cause him problems

in the boxing ring. Klitschko has made his future plans clear and stated that he would like to unify the heavyweight division by fighting for the only world title belt that is not in his possession, being the WBC crown that once belonged to his brother Vitali and now owned by American Deontay Wilder. Fury’s plans on beating Klitschko is by using a southpaw stance because he believes that Klitschko most competitive and problematic fights have been with fighters who fought him from a southpaw stance like Corrie Sanders and Tony Thompsons. Fury also claims that he can fight effectively at long range or on the inside and believes he has the boxing tools to defeat Klitschko. Klitschko is now 39 years old with a 6ft 6inch in height compared to Fury who is 27 years old with a 6ft 9inch height. Fury will be earning approximately 1 million pounds for the fight against Klitschko and will be fighting for Klitschko’s WBA, IBF and WBO world title belts. In my view Klitschko enters this bout against Fury as the favourite to win and since the fight will be staged in Germany it will also give Klitschko home advantage considering his previous 67 fights have taken place at the same location. Fury on the other hand will cause Klitschko problems in the ring with his height advantage, his youth, younger man’s fitness and speed and possessing that one knockout punch. I also feel that Fury’s sheer will to fight at all costs and determination will force Klitschko to fight more actively than usual. Fury is also one hell of an awkward fighter and his lack of skill and coordination tends to work in his favour as he is unpredictable and knows how to use his size to lean on his opponents and grind them to a halt. I expect Klitschko to win this bout as his “boxing skill” will overcome Fury’s “will” even though it will be a hard night’s work for the Ukraine champion.

‘This win is for India’

CHAMPIONS: Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis celebrate winning the ladies doubles at Wimbledon, coming back from a set down to win 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5

Wimbledon champ dedicates title to home All eyes were once again fixated on the All England Club last weekend, as the world’s top tennis players took to centre court in the hunt for this year’s prestigious Wimbledon titles. As Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams picked up the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively, it was in the doubles categories that Asia was represented, firstly with success for Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis in the ladies doubles. The partners, of Indian and Swiss nationalities, defeated Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, in the final - 5-7, 7-6(7-4), 7-5, to clinch the top prize. In doing so, Mirza made history becoming the first Indian to earn a winners medal in the ladies doubles at Wimbledon, whilst Hingis picked up her second such title, 19 years after her first. 28-year-old Mirza gave up her singles career to focus on doubles competition, and dedicated her latest success to India and her supporters around the world. She told reporters in Hyderabad: “As a child, I always wanted to play in

Wimbledon. I am fortunate enough to win four Grand Slams. “I am honoured to come from a country which has such a passion for sport. This win is for India and all the people who supported me. “This is a great time for Indian tennis - we've returned with three Wimbledon titles. (But) We are not the most tennis-friendly nation. We lack a system. I think we need that.” Things didn’t go exactly to plan for the winning partnership in the early exchanges of the match, losing the first set 5-7, before going 5-2 down in what could have been the decider. However, as Makarova and Vesnina spurned three break points, it allowed the Swiss-Indian combination to seize upon the opportunity of getting back into the game. Taking the final set, 7-5, Mirza said the support from the crowd helped carry them over the finish line. “To come out here at Wimbledon, this is something we dream of as kids,” Mirza added. “I always say this. “Every kid that picks up a tennis racquet, this is

about winning Wimbledon or playing at Wimbledon one day. I think I'm speaking for both of us, we feel privileged to be here. “When we came out at five-all, we had goosebumps. The energy on the court, we were getting a standing ovation, it was unbelievable. “We both came out and I said, ‘This is what we play for, this is what we work for, this energy’.” Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles, there was further success for Indian tennis with Leander Paes this time partnering with Hingis, easing to a 6-1, 6-1 final victory.

Things are looking up for Satnam Singh At just 19-years-old, the future looks bright for the giant Satnam Singh as he made a brief four-minute appearance in the 2015 NBA Summer League last week. Standing at 7feet and 2inches tall, he certainly has the build to make it in the world’s top basketball leagues, and featured for the Dallas Mavericks in their narrow 88-86 victory over the LA Lakers. In a thrilling encounter, the Indian entered the game with two minutes left in the first quarter and made an immediate impact – grabbing a defensive rebound with 1.44 on the clock. He went on to score his first points in the game with a free throw in the second quarter.

Super Sunday Fasting is no problem for the ‘Terminator’

Back page story continued “On the day, it was really warm and I saw several runners who needed medical attention at the finish line but thankfully, my evening training runs left me in good stead for the race.” He added: “I am truly humbled by all the love, prayers and inspirational words of encouragement I received from people. I even had people who I had never met before asking

how the race went. “There was a big build up on social media with messages of support prior and post race coming from around the world, so I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who kindly donated and my corporate sponsors.” Despite having no food or water, it didn’t stop Nazim from moving on to lead a spiritual meditation gathering after the 2pm Dhur prayer at the Jamia Masjid Naqshbandia Aslamia.

This was followed up by participating in a four-hour charity car wash until 8pm, before finally carrying out another service for over 150 people in the evening. In total, the local charity-man raised over £7,000 from the run which will go towards helping establish a new home for misplaced Syrian refugees. “The money raised will go towards providing shelter, healthcare, education and parental care to 29 Syrian Orphans for one year in SKT Welfare Charity’s flagship ‘Springs of Hope Family Centre’ in the Turkish/Syrian border town of Reyhanli,” he said. “The site will open in August 2015 and is a 75 room purpose built accommodation for 75 widows and over 215 Syrian children. “I personally saw progress on this unique place during my recent 10 day trip there in June delivering pre-Ramadan food parcels and toys to orphaned Syrian children. “I met countless Syrian Orphans and therefore was inspired to take on this gruelling run to help them.” Nazim has to date raised over £47,000 for a range of charities by running marathons, trekking mountains and undertaking a host of other challenges.

BOWLER: Moin Ashraf will spend one month on trial with Hampshire after slipping down the pecking order at Yorkshire

Yorkshire’s Moin Ashraf has joined fellow LV= County Championship Division One side, Hampshire, on a one-month trial as he aims to return to the first team fold. The 23-year-old has not featured in a First XI match for Yorkshire since August 2013 when he took three wickets for 38 runs in a Yorkshire Bank 40 match against Glamorgan. Having been plying his trade in the Second XI, his contract is set to

expire at the end of this season and a trial with the south coast club could offer much-wanted first team opportunities. The Bradford-born right-armer has slipped down the pecking order according to Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, who wished Ashraf luck prior to his trial. “Moin needs to be playing regular cricket,” Moxon said. “He has fallen down the pecking order at the club as far as playing first team cricket. At least three

seamers – Matthew Fisher, Josh Shaw and Ben Coad – are ahead of him and clearly at this stage of his career he needs to be playing first team cricket. “His contract is up at the end of the season and no decision has been made about his future. It’s only right that Moin gets every opportunity to showcase his talents and see what’s out there for him. Hopefully it’ll work out for him at Hampshire over the next few weeks.”

Fasting is no problem for the ‘Terminator’

FINISHED: Nazim Ali completed the Leeds 10K last weekend despite fasting during the month of Ramadan

A community champion from Bradford lived up to his latest nickname - ‘the Terminator’, last weekend after completing a gruelling day of charity challenges in the midst of a 19hour fast. Muslims around the world, observed the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Completing the challenge in 55 minutes, 35 seconds, the determined fundraiser smashed his previous year’s time by seven minutes, raising funds for

the SKT Welfare Charity. Explaining more about the run, he said: “The challenge was both physically and mentally draining as I had no access to water and was in the middle of this long fast. However, my struggle is nothing in comparison to the plight of the Syrian Refugees.
