Plans for London Muhammad cartoon exhibition and the counter-jihadists

An organisation has unveiled plans to host an offensive cartoon exhibition, featuring the Prophet Muhammad, in London on 18th September. Hope Not Hate (HOPE), who exposed the plan in a report, said that while some people are supporting the exhibition out of a strong belief for free speech, others are hoping for a violent reaction from British Muslims in order to prove the incompatibility of Islam in the West.

NATO backs Turkey on Islamic State NATO has announced its full political support to Turkey in fighting militants in Syria and Iraq at an emergency meeting. Following a 90-minute meeting in Brussels on Tuesday 28th July, Turkey won the backing it sought for stepping up its role in the U.S.led fight against Islamic State with air strikes. Ankara made no request to its 27 allies for military help and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg noted that it had the second-largest army in the alliance. Instead, the meeting heard how Turkey was carrying out President Tayyip Erdogan's sudden change in strategy against Islamic State - an al Qaeda

breakaway that controls swathes of Syria and Iraq - and Kurdish militants based in Iraq. "We all stand united in condemning terrorism, in solidarity with Turkey," Stoltenberg told a news conference. The killing of 32 young students in a Turkish border town near Syria earlier this July drove Ankara into battle against Islamic State. This move was welcomed by NATO and shed its previous reluctance. Turkey has a 900 km (560-mile) border with Syria and is also concerned about Kurdish militants occupying the frontier area. Some European nations worry that Erdogan is using the

Plastic replica guns have been banned by one Pakistani city in an attempt to stop children mimicking the militancy and extremist violence endemic in parts of the country. These popular "toy guns" fire plastic or rubber pellets and are based on the designs of weapons such as the AK-47 automatic rifle. The city of Peshawar, with a population of around seven million, will put a temporary ban on anyone selling or carrying these guns during the Muslim festival of Eid Deputy Police Commissioner Riaz Khan Mahsud has said. “The basic purpose behind the ban on the sale of toy guns is to discourage the growing trend of arms and violence among the children,” he said. Peshawar is the regional capital of

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province surrounded by tribal areas that have been ravaged by violence involving the Taliban and al Qaeda. The city was also the scene of an attack by Taliban militants on a school in December that left almost 150 students and others dead. “Unfortunately, militancy and violence have promoted the culture of arms in our society and children are now frequently playing with toy arms instead of traditional toys,” said Professor Zafar Iqbal, a pediatric ophthalmologist who has treated dozens who suffered serious eye injuries from rubber pellets. Authorities don't keep figures on the number of children hurt by the so-called toys. “When children use toy guns in childhood, they don't hesitate using the real arms when grow up.”

Tuesday's meeting of ambassadors was held under Article 4 of the treaty, which permits a member of the alliance to ask for consultations with other allies when it feels its security is threatened. Ankara twice invoked this article in 2012 to ask for consultations with its NATO allies over the Syria conflict, notably after an aerial clash with Damascus. The United States, the dominant power in the alliance, has made some concessions by pledging to work with Turkey to create a safe zone inside Syria for displaced persons from the civil war that should relieve some of the refugee pressure on Ankara. Erdogan said the initiative should facilitate the return of some 1.7 million Syrian refugees from Turkey. Turkey and the United States both outlined plans for the safe zone at the meeting, but not in any detail, officials said.

Toy guns banned in Peshawar

Azra Nafees, a social and peace worker, hopes the ban will be extended across the province. “We had been struggling for many years against sale of dangerous toy guns in the country in general, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in particular, as it is badly affected by terrorism and violence,” she said. Father-of-three Hameedullah Khan was also in favor of the move but said it should be permanent as well as country-wide. “When children use toy guns in childhood, they don't hesitate using the real arms when they grow up,” he said. Mahsud, the deputy police commissioner, said that while the ban was only slated to take place during Eid, it could be extended if it proved popular with the public.

Every right-minded Indian or Pakistani wants the same thing.” Kabir says the rhythm and feel of ‘Phantom’ are very different from that in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. “There is no singing and dancing in Phantom. This is a different kind of cinema from ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, though one we hope would be equally acceptable to the audience,” he added.

One element of this plan relied on sending anti-Muslim demonstrators into heavily Muslim areas, waving placards with offensive cartoons. So horrified by what he had heard, Britain First Dowson later denounced these plans on his Knights Templar blog: “The belief is that Muslims will be so angry that they will start fighting the police in an effort to get at the demonstrators, but that with trouble breaking out in so many places at once the police will be unable to contain it. “The plot relies on this fact to envisage that this will mean that the resulting violence will spin out of

control, leading to a wave of murderous attacks not just on the ‘useful idiot’ demonstrators but also on the outnumbered police force, pubs and non- Muslims in general. “Those behind this insanely dangerous idea believe (probably correctly) that heavily armed Muslim drugs gangs will be drawn into the clashes and that Jihadist sleeper cells will also seize the opportunity to come out as militant leaders of their community as part of a massive recruitment and radicalisation drive.” Dowson’s blog gives an insight into the mindset of those backing the cartoon exhibition and should give everyone great cause for concern. As a consequence, our opposition to the cartoon exhibition is not an attempt to curtail free speech but to

prevent a clear incitement to violence. HOPE says: “Let us be clear: criticism of Islam is perfectly acceptable, as it should be of all religions. We should be able to criticise, denounce, mock and satirise. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression is an important part of any democracy and is an integral part of our cultural history,” says HOPE. “But with that freedom comes responsibility for our actions, for harm: it has its limits. We oppose this cartoon exhibition on the grounds of incitement. “But let us also be clear: if the exhibition goes ahead then we will encourage everyone to ignore it and show their opposition in a more constructive, positive and unifying way.”

Junaid Jamshed gives his first exclusive live UK press interview to the Asian Express The man who has been embroiled in controversy over a comment he made about women, gave his first exclusive live UK press interview to the Asian Express, during his Bradford visit. Junaid Jamshed, who quit his role a famous Pakistani pop singer in the late 90’s to devote his life as a conservative Sunni Muslim, says his role as a campaigner of Islam has made him vulnerable to vile comments. Visiting the UK for the opening of a fourth branch of his globallysuccessful women’s fashion label ‘J.’ in association with the Bradford-based Janan fashion house, Jamshed voiced his disappointment for being misunderstood as a misogynist and expanded on his views on women. Stating that: “I’ve refused to speak to the BBC, the Guardian and many, many other UK news agencies. I will speak to the Asian Express as I’m confident that you’ll do justice in clearing up to the misunderstandings that the public may have about what I stand for,” said Junaid Jamshed. Jamshed who is one of Pakistan’s most-recognised personalities, explained that his TV comment "God dislikes that any woman should be named (in the Quran)," was taken completely out of context. He says: “For the record, I was reiterating that women have been given the utmost respect in the Quran, and therefore not referred to by their first names in the holy book. “I made a video immediately after the furore when it became evident that I had been misunderstood, and apologised if anything I had said implied that women are not important. In fact it is exactly the opposite - I firmly believe in the sanctity of a woman – of not exploiting her – of not abusing her.” He says that he holds women in the highest regard and has never intended to deem them as inferior to men and celebrates independent working women – in fact he admits that his

daughter has just landed a job and that he encouraged her every step of the way. “My life revolved around my inspirational mother when she was alive. She has been and remains one of the most solid figures of influence for me,” says Jamshed. “My sister, my wife and my daughter are pivotal to the work I do today, and I’m more than happy to share my experiences of daily life during my sermons about true life experiences. I feel that makes me seem more human, more understanding of the complications that husband-wife, father-daughter relationships can experience.” Junaid Jamshed says that he is often in the firing line about women because he doesn’t shy away from talking about treating women with kindness, respect and equality to his heavily male-attended sermons. Addressing some of the harsh remarks on across social media that slammed him a few weeks ago, he admits though he’s not social mediasavvy, some of the comments go above and beyond the call of disliking him. “I don’t understand why people have to be so noxious, there is a manner in which criticism should be conducted. “Talking about social media and phones, I can say that it’s evolved to be more than just a communication tool. I feel it’s more damaging to the real-time relationships people have. “I’ve seen it everywhere, in homes, in restaurants, in airports – the whole family is together, but they’re actually on their individual phones sharing their experiences and feelings with a virtual world of “friendship”. “Is it so wrong to point out the obvious harm this is causing?” He says that many still resent that he was a pop star just a few years ago and now he’s a preacher of Islam and understands their hesitation in accepting his transition. “Of course I can’t expect everyone to agree with what I’m saying, I

understand that. “Facing criticism does not discourage me, and in fact, I am everdetermined to work towards spreading the religious messages of peace. “I take solace in the knowledge that even all the prophets who came into this world faced deep and violent adversaries. So who am I to complain and be hurt by a few nasty words?” Driven by learning about the life of the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), Jamshed reveals that his moment of “realisation” of Islam and his own identity came during the 9/11 terrorism attack. “It was beyond belief that Muslims had carried out this act,” he says. “Here I was soaking up and being enthralled by the exemplary life of my Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) as a good Muslim - leaving behind a legacy of how to become a great human being – and there on U.S. soil, men who called themselves “Muslims” were carrying out this horrific atrocity.” Jamshed says that he advises that people should learn about their culture and religion in order to have a strong, confident identity. He says: “When you know exactly who you are and what your values are – people of other faiths and cultures accept you more readily. That is the key to integration.” The Asian Express newspaper apologised to Junaid Jamshed for an article featured in its Yorkshire edition on 24th July where the headline stated that he had made a sexist remark.

‘Oldest’ Qur’an fragments found in Birmingham

Manuscript dated at least 1,370 years old after analysis

A Qur’an manuscript held by the University of Birmingham has been placed among the oldest in the world thanks to modern scientific methods. Radiocarbon analysis has dated the parchment, on which the text is written, to the period between 568 and 645AD with over 95 per cent accuracy. The test was carried out in a laboratory at the University of Oxford with the result placing the leaves close to the time of the Prophet Muhammad, who is generally thought to have lived between 570 and 632AD. Researchers conclude that the Qur’an manuscript is among the earliest written textual evidence of the Islamic holy book known to survive and had actually remained unrecognised at the university for over a century. This gives the Qur’an manuscript in Birmingham global significance to Muslim heritage and the study of Islam. Susan Worrall, Director of Special Collections (Cadbury Research Library), at the University of Birmingham, said: “The radiocarbon dating has delivered an exciting result, which contributes significantly to our understanding of the earliest written copies of the Qur’an. “We are thrilled that such an important historical document is here in Birmingham, the most culturally diverse city in the UK.” The Qur’an manuscript is part of the University’s Mingana Collection of Middle Eastern manuscripts, held in the Cadbury Research Library. Funded by Quaker philanthropist Edward Cadbury, the collection was acquired to raise the status of Birmingham as an intellectual centre for religious studies and attract prominent theological scholars. Consisting of two parchment leaves, the recently discovered Qur’an manuscript contains parts of Suras (chapters) 18 to 20, written with ink in an early form of Arabic script known as Hijazi. For many years, the manuscript had been misbound with leaves of a similar Qur’an manuscript, which is datable to the late seventh century. Ms Worrall added: “By separating the two leaves and analysing the parchment, we have brought to light an amazing find within the Mingana Collection.” Dr Alba Fedeli, who studied the leaves as part of her PhD research, said: ‘The two leaves, which were radiocarbon dated to the early part of the seventh century, come from the same codex as a manuscript kept

in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris.’ Explaining the context and significance of the discovery, Professor David Thomas, Professor of Christianity and Islam, and Nadir Dinshaw, Professor of Interreligious Relations at the University of Birmingham, said the find could take researchers back to the actual founding of Islam. “The radiocarbon dating of the Birmingham Qur’an folios has yielded a startling result and reveals one of the most surprising secrets of the University’s collections,” they said. “They could well take us back to within a few years of the actual founding of Islam. “According to Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad received the revelations that form the Qur’an - the scripture of Islam, between the years 610 and 632AD, the year of his death. “At this time, the divine message was not compiled into the book form in which it appears today. Instead, the revelations were preserved in ‘the memories of men’.” Prof Thomas and Prof Dinshaw explained how parts of the script were written on parchment, stone, palm leaves and even the shoulder blades of camels before Caliph Abu Bakr – the first leader of the Muslim community after Muhammad ordered the collection of all Qur’anic material in the form of a book. They added: “The final, authoritative written form was completed and fixed under the direction of the third leader, Caliph Uthman, in about 650AD. “Muslims believe that the Qur’an they read today is the same text that was standardised under Uthman and regard it as the exact record of the revelations that were delivered to Muhammad. “The tests carried out on the parchment of the Birmingham folios yield the strong probability that the animal from which it was taken was alive during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad or shortly afterwards. “This means that the parts of the Qur’an that are written on this parchment can, with a degree of confidence, be dated to less than two decades after Muhammad’s death. “These portions must have been in a form that is very close to the form of the Qur’an read today, supporting the view that the text has undergone little or no alteration and that it can be dated to a point very close to the time it was believed to be revealed.”

David Cameron’s ‘Counter-Extremism Strategy’ A four step proposal to tackling the threat of extremism

Overcoming extremism is the greatest ‘struggle of our generation’, Prime Minister David Cameron stated last week, as he laid out his five-year plan to tackling the ‘dangerous’ ideology. Speaking in front of guests in Birmingham, Mr Cameron set out the principles for Britain’s ‘CounterExtremism Strategy’, with four areas of work that must be addressed. In brief below, are the outlines of the plans and how each one will help ‘bring Britain together as one nation’ in the fight against extremism. Counter-ideology Step one of the Prime Minister’s strategy involves ‘de-glamorising’ the extremist cause with specific mention of the Islamic State. He says the ‘conspiracy theorists’ who undermine shared values and attempt to isolate Muslim communities cannot win, and urged young people to understand the truths of what lie ahead in a life with IS. “You won’t be some valued member of a movement,” Mr Cameron said. “You are cannon fodder for them. They will use you. “If you are a boy, they will

brainwash you, strap bombs to your body and blow you up. If you are a girl, they will enslave and abuse you.” By working with people who understand what life is like under IS, the strategy looks to communicate directly with young people, whilst also empowering the UK’s Syrian, Iraqi and Kurdish communities, to give them a platform to be heard. Adding that British values must be adhered to, he said the passive tolerance of extremist practices must be stopped by the ‘government, local authorities, police, schools, all of us’. Tackle both the non-violent and violent aspects of extremism Part two of the strategy was to tackle both parts of the ‘extremist creed’ – the non-violent and violent. “This means confronting groups and organisations that may not advocate violence – but which do promote other parts of the extremist narrative,” the Prime Minister stated. A number of legislations will come into practice to help confront the ‘narrative’, including strengthening Ofcom’s role to tackle foreign channels that broadcast hate preachers and extremist content.

Speakers in public spaces such as universities will also be challenged, with the educational institutions told to do more to stop such events taking place. The National Union of Students was also criticised by Mr Cameron for allying themselves with institutions such as CAGE, which have openly promoted jihad in Iraq and Afghanistan before. “In my opinion, [these affiliations] shame your organisation and your noble history of campaigning for justice,” he said. New legislation will also be introduced shortly to enable parents to have the power to cancel their childrens’ passports if they believe they are ‘at risk’. Embolden the Muslim community “If you’re interested in reform; if you want to challenge the extremists in our midst; if you want to build an alternative narrative or if you just want to help protect your kids – we are with you and we will back you – with practical help, with funding, with campaigns, with protection and with political representation.” This is the message Mr Cameron said was a ‘key part’ of the counter-

extremism strategy, as the government aims to promote and encourage ‘moderate’ and ‘reforming’ Muslim voices. Saying that extremist ideology does not reflect the true ideology of Islam, he announced plans to setup up a new community engagement forum, to hear directly from those out there who are challenging extremism. He also urged broadcasters to focus on the hard-working Muslims in society, who ‘deserve’ a platform to be heard on, rather than featuring the extremist voices for more ‘explosive television’. Build a more cohesive society The final step in the strategy involves tackling any isolation and identity which exisits with young people living in Britain today. Mr Cameron said it was often hard for young people to understand where they fit into society and it can be even harder if you are ‘young and Muslim, or young and Sikh, or young and black’. Referring back to his pre-election speech, he once again spoke of the importance of increasing the representation of Black and Ethnic

minority communities in the police and armed forces, alongside those who take up apprentices, as well as in positions of influence, leadership and political power. Louise Casey, who heads the government’s troubled families unit, has been tasked with carrying out a review of how best to boost opportunity and integration in these communities. “She will look at CHALLENGE: issues like how we Louise Casey can ensure people learn English; how we boost employment outcomes, especially for women; how state agencies can work with these communities to properly promote integration and opportunity but also learning lessons from past mistakes,” Mr Cameron explained. An interim report is expected from Ms Casey early next year.

17 years for would-be ‘crystal meth producer’

A West Midlands man has received prison sentences totalling 17 years following two separate investigations into drug and money laundering offences. Popinder Singh Kandola, aged 54, from Skip Lane, Walsall, was jailed for 10 years in January at Birmingham Crown Court after being found guilty of conspiracy to supply heroin and money laundering The National Crime Agency (NCA) case can only now be reported as Kandola was involved in a second trial at Bristol Crown Court. NCA officers assisted Avon & Somerset Police with an investigation into Kandola’s role in a plot to set up a crystal meth production centre in the South West. Kandola received a consecutive seven year sentence today after being found guilty of conspiracy to produce MDMA and amphetamine. Paul Risby, NCA Branch Commander, said: “Kandola was at the centre of two organised crime groups determined to distribute large amounts of drugs throughout communities in West Midlands and the South West. “We believe he had been involved in the drug trade for many years and clearly thought he could operate above the law. Even while he was on bail for other offences he became involved in a separate plot to produce crystal meth. “Kandola has found out the hard way that the NCA and its partners won’t stop pursuing drug traffickers. He will now have to spend even more time in prison.” As part of the NCA investigation, officers evidenced Kandola overseeing a drug handover in the Balsall Heath area of Birmingham involving a number of his criminal associates. A bag containing 1.26kg of heroin was recovered. During a meeting in the Coseley area, Kandola was observed by officers receiving a bag from another criminal associate which contained £50,000. Over the last two years, five of Kandola’s accomplices have received jail sentences totalling 28 years.

A man who shot dead his mother-in-law on her doorstep in Pakistan has been found guilty of murder following a UK investigation. On Monday 27th July, at Woolwich Crown Court, 31-year-old Tariq Rana, was found guilty of murdering Ghulam Asia , 49, at the entrance to her home in Lahore, Pakistan. Rana, from Wolverhampton gunned her down in July 2013 after his wife walked out on him in the United Kingdom. In revenge he sought to kill members of her family in Pakistan culminating in the death of his mother-in-law. Although the murder took place in Pakistan, detectives used Section 9 of the Offences against the Person Act 1861 to prosecute him. The conviction of Rana is thought to be the first of its kind by a UK police force in recent memory for a crime committed in Pakistan.

#FightBackStartsHere Communities unite in fight against extremism Representatives from community groups and civil society organisations across the UK joined forces in the capital earlier this month as they pledged their collective support to the fight-back against all forms of extremism. Organised by the Active Change Foundation, people who signed up to the initiative have also signed an open letter publically pledging their support for the #FightBackStartsHere campaign. Speaking at the launch event Suleman Nagdi, representing the Federation of Muslim Organisations who are coordinating this nationwide initiative said it was ‘time to step up to the challenge’. “For 30 years I have worked with other communities and faiths to promote harmony and fight against all extremists,” he said. “Those who sow hate and prey on young people to encourage them to harm themselves, their families and the fabric of the communities in which they live must be stopped. Recent events have been a wake-up call. “It is great to see like minded people and community groups from all over the UK join this new movement and commit to win this battle.

“The fight-back has to start right here and right now – everyone has to step up to the challenge. An elderly woman has been accused of practising witchcraft, stripped naked and beheaded in Assam, India. 63-year-old Purni Orang had been blamed for the illnesses in the tribal settlement. Seven people, including two women, have been arrested over her killing. Witch hunts targeting women are common in parts of India and a number of those accused are killed every year. Indian police say nearly 90 people, mostly women, have been beheaded, burnt alive or stabbed to death after such accusations in the last six years. Experts say superstitious beliefs are behind some of these attacks, but there are occasions when people – especially widows – are targeted for their land and property. An Assam police officer

said: "Branding women as witches is particularly prevalent among tribal communities and tea plantation workers in the state. “People in a village in Sonitpur district were falling sick, and some of them blamed Purni Orang for their condition. After that they branded her a witch and killed her.”

Crematorium review Chancellor listens to Hindu and Sikh communities

The Chancellor has launched a review into crematorium facilities at last week’s budget to ensure that they are appropriate to the needs of all users and faiths. This follows representations to the Chancellor from British Hindus and Sikhs, who are concerned that current facilities are often too small, and not equipped to meet their needs. The Government wants to know more about these issues and what steps can be taken to improve existing facilities in line with current law. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said: “This is a Budget that delivers for British Hindus and Sikhs: backing business, supporting aspiration and standing behind families that work hard. “Over the past year a number of British Hindus and Sikhs have also raised with me their concerns about cremation facilities for their communities. “They’ve told me that often the facilities are not large enough for everyone from the community to pay their respects and don’t always pay enough regard to cultural sensitivities. “So this Budget announces a review into these facilities. We want to know more about concerns people from all faiths and none have about these facilities, so we can do more to ensure everybody can mark the passing of their loved ones

Bin Laden family killed in UK plane crash Three members of the bin Laden family were killed last week as the plane they were travelling in crashed on approach to Hampshire’s Blackbushe Airport. On Friday 2nd August, the small private jet came down past the runway to crash into a small car auction, killing all four people on board. Police confirmed that three of the deceased were members of the bin Laden family, which is one of the most prominent business dynasties in Saudi Arabia. In a statement, Hampshire Constabulary said: “We do believe three of the deceased to be the mother, sister and brother-in-law of the owner of the aircraft, all of whom are from the bin Laden family, but

formal post-mortem examinations are ongoing. “They were Saudi Arabian nationals and visiting the UK on vacation.” Saudi media reports have suggested the victims included the stepmother and sister of the notorious former Al Qaeda leader, Osama Bin laden, who was killed by US Special Forces in his Pakistani hideout in 2011. Mystery still surrounds the cause of the crash with most aviation experts pointing the finger of blame at the pilot. Blind cancer survivor rewarded for bravery COMMENDED: Hasan Sankriwala has been named as a CHECT Champion for his ‘inspirational attitude’ after overcoming cancer

Inspirational youngster honoured by Childhood Eye Cancer Trust A 12-year old boy, who has spent much of his childhood in hospitals, has received a prestigious award in recognition of the courage he has shown while battling against a rare form of cancer. Hasan Sankriwala was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a cancer which affects the retina of children predominantly under six-years-old, when he was just one. Sadly Hasan’s right eye had to be removed by doctors at the specialist Birmingham Children’s Hospital to save his life prior to undergoing chemotherapy. Although able initially to still see through his left eye, a detached retina has since left him with extremely limited overall vision and he is now registered blind. Despite everything Hasan, who is from Bradford, rarely complains and lives an active, happy life. He has even learned how to ride a bicycle and climb trees. In recognition of his outstanding efforts and bravery Hasan has now been named a CHECT Champion by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT). The CHECT Champion awards aim to recognise the courage, resilience and patience shown by all children affected by retinoblastoma (often referred to as Rb for short) throughout treatment and beyond. “Throughout everything Hasan has

remained positive and developed the approach that he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to,” says proud mum Shahnaz Sankriwala. “He is always happy and ends up giving all of us a lift with we are sometimes down. “He’s been an inspiration to everyone around him with his attitude and thoroughly deserves this award. We are very, very proud of him.” CHECT has three vital missions – to offer one-to-one support for families and individuals affected by retinoblastoma, to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms to prompt earlier diagnosis, and to help fund research into the disease. The CHECT Champion awards are sponsored by Credit Suisse with each child receiving a medal together with a framed certificate and goody bag. Chief executive of the charity, Joy Felgate, said the awards were a great way to commend children who have already had to overcome difficulties in their lives. “Every child affected by retinoblastoma faces huge disruption, upset and distressing treatment not to mention follow-on check-ups,” she said. “We are delighted to recognise the courage, resilience and resourcefulness shown by Hasan throughout his treatment. A Bradford man has been hailed a ‘hero’ by his neighbours after rescuing a three-month old baby from a burning house fire. 22-year-old Aamir Nawaz, from Manningham, had been dropped off outside his sister’s house, on Durham Road, after football training when he heard screams for help. Running down the street with takeaway in hand, the have-a-go hero arrived at his neighbour’s door where she was stood with two children. Her husband was out working at the time and their youngest child was trapped inside the home which had been set ablaze. Courageously, Aamir dropped his takeaway, lifted his jumper over his head and made his way upstairs in the smoke-filled house. “There was black smoke everywhere,” he explained. “I ran up the stairs and started looking for the child. “Eventually I kicked down the bedroom door and the baby was lying in a cot. There was smoke in the room but the window had been left open a bit which must have helped. “I scooped the child up in my arms under my jumper and just concentrated on making it back downstairs without breathing in too much smoke.” Aamir made it outside with child in hand, at which time the fire service had just turned up. He was commended for his efforts by neighbours and fire-fighters whilst the baby’s family hailed him a ‘hero’ for his bravery.

Three children were taken to the Bradford Royal Infirmary for treatment for smoke inhalation on the night, and were discharged the next day. “In that situation you don’t really think about yourself, just the fact that there is a baby who needs help,” Aamir added. “In Islam, we are told that we must help our neighbours. I have been brought up to respect this belief and the only thing going through my head at that point was that this baby needs rescuing. “I knew it would be a risk but as soon as I was inside, I knew what I had to do.” Aamir received an official commendation from his local Masjid Umar as well as from the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. Aldene Woodward, watch commander at Fairweather Green, explained how the blaze had caused significant damage. “It was quite bad,” she said. “The family has been displaced now. “The cause of the fire is being investigated by the fire investigation team and the police. “A significant amount of smoke spread around the house, it caused enough damage that the family wouldn't have been able to stay in the house. We called a Red Cross crisis team to help with the family. “We will be checking on all properties in that area, offering fire safety advice and making sure all homes have working smoke alarms.”

After more than 100,000 people signed an online petition calling for Britain’s Home Secretary to stop the deportation of two ‘at-risk- refugees, an 11th hour decision was made to the delight of many campaigners. On Friday 26th June – three weeks after being taken to Yarl’s Wood Detention centre, husband and wife, Raja Khouja and Mahmoud Alhassan, were freed from their confinement to protest their planned deportation. As the couple’s application for asylum had not yet been granted, they were facing the threat of being deported to Saudi Arabia on Thursday 25th June. 67-year-old Raja, an advocate for women’s rights, has openly spoke out against the denial of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia previously and as such, has received threats of mutilation, imprisonment and even death by the nation’s Mutawa (religious police). Originally from Syria, Raja has never been to Saudi Arabia and has lived in Leeds for the past four years with her husband, after fleeing her war torn home. Upon being released from Yarl’s Wood, she thanked all the people who had supported her, and praised ‘the people of Britain’. “Today I feel I was born,” she said. “I feel that I have my freedom and life thanks to the British people - all my friends and all those who I have never met but who supported my case and spoke out for me. “I run out of words to tell you how much I thank you. I have great respect and warm love to every one of you. “My message is to all my friends

She explained: “We now begin the process of seeking permission for Judicial Review of the decision to deport Raja and Mahmoud. “The process is by no means over, but we’re satisfied with the progress we’ve made so far and to have the support of more than 100,000 signatories to their petition on Change.org gives us a real boost that people share our resolve.”

The Indian leader is expected to arrive in London around 12th November before attending the G20 Leader’s Summit in Antalya, Turkey, later that week. The dates were finalised by India's foreign secretary, S Jaishankar after meeting with his British counterpart, Sir Simon Fraser. Modi was expected to visit the capital earlier this year for the unveiling of the Mahatma Ghandi statue in Parliament Square yet he was unable to attend. A public appearance at Wembley Stadium has been mentioned previously, likely to imitate Modi’s Madison Square Garden event, held during his visit to the US. He addressed thousands at the iconic arena and is hoped to do a similar event here in the UK. The South Asian leader is currently on a tour of Asia and Russia with trade and energy topping his agenda during his five-day visit.

The shopping mall, which is being developed through an investment of £750,000 in Cheetham Hill Shopping Centre, will be a brand new retail space of approximately 20,000 square feet. Open six days a week from 10am to 8pm it will present an opportunity for shoppers to visit the mall after working hours and there is no need to worry about parking, with 500 free spaces available for customers. As well as a host of new retailers, an onsite 60-seater cafe, offering up delicious Asian cuisine, will also open its doors to the public alongside a beauty salon. The mall aims to attract around 20,000 visitors a week into the Cheetham Hill area

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor, who married Saif Ali Khan almost three years ago, has expressed her desire to become a mother someday but not for a while yet. "As of now there are no plans (to have children) and I am very clear about it. Of course I will be a mother someday but not for the next two or three years. Reports circulated that Amitabh charged to endorse DD Kisan, amid suggestions that the marketing agency had a tough time in getting the celebrity to do the campaign.

DSP Rajesh Tyagi said: "As far as we could understand, the driver of the Mercedes in which Hema Malini was travelling was

at fault. He was driving recklessly. The speed of the Mercedes was nothing less than 150kmph which caused difficulty in applying brakes on time." The actress tweeted on 8th July: "My heart goes out to the child. How I wish the girl's father had followed traffic rules - thn this accident could have been averted & the lil one's life safe!" What has caused Indian journo’s to go into a fingerpointing frenzy was the death of little Sonam and the unanswered question as to why Hema didn’t take the little girl and the injured Khandelwal family to the hospital with her. Khandelwal's cousin Ashok Gupta, said: "She (Hema) might be a big shot but instead of praying for the speedy recovery of the family, she has entered into this blame game. I will request her to keep calm, take care of her injury and pray for our family as we have already lost a little girl." Meanwhile Hema's daughter Isha Deol had promised financial aid to the family after her mother was discharged from the Fortis hospital in Jaipur.

Opening date confirmed for modern Indian Asha’s, in Manchester

he commercial court has provided useful clarification on the law of mitigation in the recent case of Thai Airways International Public Company Limited –v- KI Holdings Co Limited. In an interesting set of circumstances, the commercial court had to take a view on what the appropriate measure of damages was for a claim for breach of contract when a claimant had taken steps to mitigate its loss but in doing so had also received certain benefits. Thai Airways was the claimant airline and had contracted with the defendant, Koito, a Japanese manufacturing company for the supply of economy seats for some of its aircraft fleet. In breach of this contract, Koito delivered the seats late and further, failed to deliver some of the seats at all. In order to mitigate the loss that would have been incurred by Koito’s breach, Thai Airways had to store some of its fleet and purchase seats from an alternative supplier. Thai Airways also had to lease aircraft from a third party whilst their fleet remained in storage. Thai Airways claimed damages for Koito’s breach of contract and assessed their loss at $107 million, this being the cost of entering the aircraft leases. Koito’s position was that credit ought to be given for any benefits obtained from entering into these leases, such as any profit made during the period of the breach. The duty to mitigate applies to all claimants seeking damages for loss, and applies to claims for breach of contract and breach of duty. A claimant must also avoid taking unreasonable steps which would have the effect of

increasing its loss. The extent a claimant has attempted to mitigate their loss is considered in the award of damages a claimant may recover. A failure to mitigate may result in a lower award of damages i.e. a claimant cannot recover damages for any part of its loss that it could have avoided by taking reasonable steps. The commercial court held that it would be unlikely that Thai Airways would actually be able to quantify its lost profits due to the complexity involved in calculating their financial position and as a result of this they shouldn’t be penalised or prevented from recovering damages incurred in mitigating their loss. Thai Airways were awarded the full cost of the lease, calculated at $107 million, however the Judge rejected Thai Airway’s argument that it would be unjust to require them to give credit for a benefit they had no choice but to receive. In doing so, the Judge held that because Thai Airways had essentially made a fuel saving due to the reduced weight of the aircraft, Koito should receive credit for this against the damages they owed, even though Thai Airways had no alternative option at the time but to acquire the lighter seats. It could be argued that a decision in the alternative may have lead to Thai Airways obtaining betterment above and beyond the damages owed. The useful test laid down by the commercial courts in this case provides important guidance as to the law of mitigation and is a reminder that litigants should consider these principles should they find themselves let down by suppliers.

McLaren hails record profit British supercar maker McLaren has celebrated record sales and financial results for 2014. The Woking-based firm has more than tripled its pre-tax profit from 2013, the first year the fledgeling company turned a profit, from £4.5m to £15m. McLaren insiders attribute the uplift to sales of its P1 hypercar, which is sold out in both road-going

and track-only GTR guises. The 500-strong limited run of track-focused 675LTs, based on the core 650S model, is fully sold out as well. With 1,649 cars sold last year and around 1,800 predicted for 2015 thanks to the expected introduction of the first of the company's more affordable 'Sports Series' models in the autumn, business bosses are

toasting promising times. “To achieve what we have in four years is probably unprecedented in the industry,” said Mike Flewitt, McLaren CEO, before thanking the P1 specifically. “What it has done for us is show what this company is capable of, and I believe this is the best driving car there is. The other thing it has done for us is communicate what

McLaren is all about.” Mr Flewitt also confirmed that McLaren will not succumb to the potentially lucrative “distraction” of building an SUV, and will continue to base all production at the McLaren Technical Centre in Woking. “This will remain our production centre,” he said, “and we have no plans to build cars anywhere other

than here in Woking.” This year alone the company will take on 200 new staff, and has recently grown its quality control division by 80 people in a drive to ensure the absolute highest manufacturing quality associated, the firm said, with British craftsmanship. The guys at Porsche state that it’s the most powerful and fastest Boxster ever created. With 375 horsepower - 45 more than the Boxster GTS and 10 fewer than the Cayman GT4 from a naturally aspirated, 3.8litre flat-six borrowed from the 911 Carrera S and a top speed of 180 mph, the numbers back up the boast. The larger, morepowerful engine also is shared with the GT4, and it trumps the 3.4-litre unit from the S and GTS. The little beauty accelerates from a standstill to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds, which is half a second faster than the Boxster GTS with a manual transmission. The unwavering standard of the North Loop of the Nürburgring proves Porsches claims convincingly - it takes seven minutes and 47 seconds for the Boxster Spyder to come around to the starting/finishing line again. Diesel wholesale prices have dropped below those for unleaded, new research has revealed, but despite this it's still much more expensive on the forecourt. The RAC's Fuel Watch report for June shows that diesel wholesale prices are the equivalent of 1-3p cheaper per litre, but the average diesel price per litre is currently 120p compared to petrol's 117p. Some retailers have reportedly reduced diesel prices slightly, but the RAC is aware of none that have taken the price of diesel below that of petrol, suggesting that retailers running on “wafer-thin” margins on petrol are being

Two thirds of drivers don’t plan for repairs Drivers in the UK are risking breakdowns and major bills as only 29 per cent make a plan to cover the cost of car repairs. That number is made of of 15 per cent who budget in advance for maintenance and repair work, while 14 per cent say they have a warranty that pays for this work. A study by Allianz found that 29 per cent of drivers say they would have to dip into savings to meet the cost of repairs. A further 23 per cent reveal they would be forced to use their credit card to cover this type of cost. Liz Grindell, Head of Warranty for Allianz Global Assistance in the UK, said: ‘It’s clear from our survey that most people fail to plan ahead for

car repairs, with a small minority of people budgeting for extra costs and even fewer having suitable warranty cover. How many people would be happy having to use their savings to fix their car rather than to pay for a holiday or splash out on that new gadget or pair of shoes? ‘The cost of owning and running a car doesn’t stop after paying for the insurance, MOT, road tax and fuel, but it’s easy to forget the added expenses such as new tyres and ongoing repairs and maintenance. Its four occupants will be comfy on the 540mile journey too, even if they're significantly taller than the car is wide. The smart forfour is tiny on the outside, yet clever engineering means its interior is vast and is packed with technology to help make the journey fun, relaxing and safe. It stands a good chance of being the ultimate commuting machine, were it not for one obvious rival. The forfour is reliant on roads, meaning the humble train has an obvious advantage in that it can get

from point-to-point through a more direct route. When it comes to outright speed and ruthless efficiency, it's one-nil to the train. Nicknamed the smart 'forrail', it might appear like a lightly modified smart for four but it's, in fact, a fully certified, mini-train. The smart's tridion safety cell allows it immense strength, which underpins the forrail. No matter how simple Roger Moore made it look in his Mercedes-Benz 250 SE, removing the tyres and placing it on tracks isn't really possible in real life - the car would fall off almost immediately. Six months of engineering work and sophisticated CAD modelling later, the smart forrail is equipped

with unique, solid steel wheels each measuring 22-inches in diameter and weighing 80 kg, allowing it the traction it needs on rails. Designed by Interfleet, a specialised British train engineering business based in Derby, the team who usually work on 16-litre, 70tonne diesel locomotives, had to employ a new approach to the challenge presented by a 999 cc, one-tonne smart. The agile steering, which in road use allows the smart forfour to handle as if it's on rails, was disconnected by engineers, to allow it to handle being driven on rails. Under close supervision, the smart forrail tentatively took to the tracks at the weekend on the privately operated Bluebell Railway - providing a few, bemused commuters the chance to avoid the congested roads without having to leave the comfort of the compact four-seater. The 10-mile stretch of railway, cutting a direct route through Sussex, represented a significant challenge for the smart forrail, and yet the smallest train on the tracks took the trip in its stride, and the regular enthusiasts (present for a model railway exhibition) somewhat by surprise. Despite challenging engineering obstacles, the experiment steadfastly refused to come off the rails. The best of both worlds were combined albeit briefly - to create arguably the most efficient, and fun, commuting machine in the world.

More than half (55 per cent) of drivers today say they bought their first car themselves using their own savings, with nearly three in 10 (29 per cent) saying their parents bought their first car for them. This is in contrast to previous decades, where 68 per cent of new drivers in the 1970s paid for their first car themselves, with just 19% turning to the ‘bank of mum and dad’.

Top Gear has finally marked the end of an era with footage of Jeremy Clarkson saying he "hates" working on the show. The 75-minutes of footage for the finale was filmed before Clarkson was fired from the show. Aired as two separate films, in the second instalment, while stuck in a muddy river Clarkson is heard lamenting: "I hate working on Top Gear." Minutes before that Clarkson appears to wee in his tuxedo saying: "I can't imagine a urinesoaked pair of trousers is going to put the audience off because..." he explains, gesturing to his mudcovered hands and clothes. In the challenge, the trio were tasked with racing across muddy farmlands to reach a black-tie event at Broughton Hall. The last person to arrive had to give a speech in aid of the North Yorkshire Carbon Management and Sustainability Trust. The show format featured James May and Richard Hammond presenting in an empty studio, without Clarkson or the usual live audience.

A bigger number of drivers in the UK remember their first motoring love than their first kiss. It’s been revealed 77 per cent of drivers fondly know what their first car was compared to 75 per cent who can still recall who it was they kissed for the first time. A combination of these two loves also means 35 per cent of drivers own up to having their first kiss in the car they started their driving career. One in 10 drivers also say their first car was the scene of their earliest romantic date. An even greater number (93 per cent) still know what colour their original set of wheels was, whereas only 88 per cent accurately

Opinion on social media was divided, with fans and celebrities expressing sadness and glee. Comedian and actor Rufus Hound tweeted: "Bwahahaha! People on here treating Top Gear like it isn't just a TV show. It is just a TV show. No-one has died. Repeat. No-one has died."

Controversial columnist Katie Hopkins tweeted: "We just watched the last of British humour on the BBC #TopGear." Clarkson was vocal about the final, calling the final instalment "cobbled together" in a column he wrote for The Sun. He also commented on Twitter hours before the final aired, saying: "Strange that BBC News is talking down the last Top Gear tonight. Do they not want big ratings for some reason?" However, after the episode he tweeted: "Many many thanks for all your support and encouragement over the years. So sad and sorry it's ended like this." Hammond also said farewell to fans on Twitter, writing: "Can't believe that one life has room to accommodate the first and the last steps of that incredible adventure. Thanks for your company." The show will return with new host, Chris Evans, next year. Evans has called on Top Gear fans to send in short audition clips to join him as a co-host on the revamped show.

Self-proclaimed cricket enthusiast, Professor Lord Patel of Bradford, has become the first British Asian to be named on the ECB’s board of directors as he was appointed as an independent member last week. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced the news on Wednesday 8th July with the West Yorkshire Lord joining the 14-strong board, signing on a fouryear contract. Lord Patel, who currently sits in the House of Lords as a Labour Peer, formerly worked for the Yorkshire Cricket Academy as a part-time coach and has had a life-long involvement with the recreational game via local leagues in Bradford. Last year he served on the judging panel of the inaugural Asian Cricket Awards supported by the ECB, and will succeed Lord Morris of Handsworth in his new role with the country’s cricket governing body. A former ambulanceman, special constable and social worker, Lord Patel has retained a keen interest in cricket while becoming one of the country’s most influential and authoritative spokesmen on issues relating to health, social care and equality, and human rights. He said he was honoured to be the first British Asian member to be appointed to the sport’s board and looked forward to widening the game’s appeal. “Cricket has been a life-long passion of mine and this is a great

honour for me,” he said. “I am a huge advocate of what the sport can bring to the wider community – from instilling life-skills like self-discipline and leadership to improving fitness and tackling wider issues like obesity. “I am also naturally very honoured and proud to be the first British Asian chosen to serve as an ECB Board Director and keen to explore ways in which cricket can better engage with Britain’s diverse communities, particularly the South Asian community, and take full advantage of the many different ways in which we can widen the game’s appeal still further.” Commenting on the appointment, ECB Chairman Colin Graves added: “Lord Patel’s instinctive grasp of the role cricket plays in uniting communities and crossing social barriers will be all important as we continue to change how we work as an organisation. “He is a hugely respected figure and his sound judgement and expertise will be an enormous asset to the Board and the wider game. “I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Lord Morris for all his efforts as a Board Director over the past decade, in particular his outstanding work in chairing the Major Match Group. “He has been a true friend to cricket and I am sure all his many friends and colleagues within the game will want to join me in wishing him well for the future.”

A former FIFA executive committee member has been banned for life from any activities within the sport following US investigations into corruption by football officials. The flamboyant Chuck Blazer, who at one point weighed over 400lbs, pleaded guilty to bribery and financial offences in secret in 2013. Last week, the sport’s governing body’s ethics committee found the 70year-old had breached rules on loyalty, confidentiality, duty of disclosure, conflicts of interest, offering and accepting gifts and bribery and corruption. In a statement provided by the committee, they said: “Mr Blazer committed many and various acts of misconduct continuously and repeatedly during his time as an official in different high-ranking and influential positions at FIFA and CONCACAF (which governs the sport in North and Central America and the Caribbean). “In his positions as a soccer official, he was a key player in schemes involving the offer, acceptance, payment and receipt of undisclosed and illegal payments, bribes and kickbacks as well as other money-making schemes.”

Through a 2013 US plea agreement, Blazer became a cooperating witness in the US probe, which has engulfed FIFA and pressured the governing body's president, Sepp Blatter, to step down. Blazer agreed to provide prosecutors information, turn over any documents he possessed related to the probe, participate in undercover activities and testify at trial. Currently, the American national is being treated in hospital with rectal cancer, type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. He had previously served on the FIFA executive committee which awarded the rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively – both of which are currently under investigation. Over the past years, as a critical spotlight has been increasingly turned on the organization and the awarding of World Cups, FIFA has handed down bans to a number of officials. Among them, Asian soccer chief Mohamed Bin Hammam was banned for life for ethics breaches. Last Monday, Harold Mayne-Nicholls, who led the teams which inspected bids for 2018 and 2022, was banned from all soccer for seven years.

END OF AN ERA – BOXER CARL FROCH RETIRES

British boxing sensation and four-time super middleweight world champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch (33-2, 24 KO’s) has announced his retirement from professional boxing after much debate and speculation of a final last fight against the likes of current champion James DeGale (21-1, 14 KO’s) and Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO’s). In regards to the DeGale fight, Froch vacated his IBF belt in February of this year declaring that the fight did not make financial sense. DeGale’s response to Froch’s comments were that he was a coward and too scared to fight him. Froch was the holder of the prestigious WBC title twice and also won the WBA and IBF belts during his successful boxing career. In his last two fights Froch was matched against a young upcoming British boxer called George Groves that resulted in a controversial stoppage win for Froch during the first encounter and then in a rematch at Wembley Stadium where he won via knock out in front of 80,000 boxing spectators and proved all of his doubters wrong. Froch was due to fight Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Las Vagas on 28Th March 2015, but an elbow injury forced Froch out of the fight. Froch would have liked to finish his career on a high and have his final fight at the mecca of boxing, MGM arena, but unfortunately that fight never materialised. The Cobra had been hinting about the possibility of retirement for some time now and openly admitted that he was nearing the end of his career and wanted to now spend more time with his family including his two wonderful children. In regards to his retirement Froch said “I turned 38 last week. My joints and bones are aching. If the desire was there, I could fight again but there's nothing

motivating me. I've got nothing left to prove and I'm bowing out at the top.” Froch fought as a professional boxer for 13 years and during that time he entered the ring against the best super middleweights in world and beat them after a crowd pleasing “old fashioned” boxing brawl. His only defeats came against Mikkel Kessler in 2010 and the man known as one of the best boxers in the world pound for pound American Andre Ward in 2011. However Froch avenged his defeat against Kessler in a 2013 rematch. Froch was born on 2nd July 1977 in Nottingham. During his boxing career as an amateur he won the ABA middleweight championship in 1999 and then again in 2001 and the world amateur bronze medal in 2001. He then turned professional in 2002 and his most notable career wins for me came against the then undefeated champion Jean Pascal, American boxing legend Jermain Taylor, most feared champion Lucian Bute, Celtic warrior Mikkel Kessler and bitter domestic rival George Groves. Froch has recently confirmed that he will now work as a boxing pundit and will share his boxing knowledge during televised boxing bouts. Boxer Amir “King” Khan recently reacted to Froch’s retirement via twitter and wrote “all the best Carl Froch, great champion, fought all the big names and done the brits proud, see you soon mate.” The boxing conversations as to whether Froch would have beaten the likes of former British super middleweight legends like Joe Calzaghe, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank will continue, but on a personal note I will remember Froch’s boxing career as a man who always came to fight and was one of the toughest British boxing fighters I have ever seen. Froch was a real gladiator of a man who fought the best and we wish him the best of luck with his retirement.

F1 remembers Jules Bianchi before Hungarian Grand Prix Force India were making headlines on the track for all the wrong reasons this weekend, after both drivers suffered heavy-impact crashes and scored no points in Hungary. In the race, overshadowed by the tragic death of Jules Bianchi last week, Sergio Perez was firstly involved in a spectacular incident when his car flipped during a practice session. A suspension failure on the Mexican’s car forced him to crash on the exit of turn 11, resulting in significant damage to the bodywork, wings and floor. Although he was uninjured, Perez was still forced into an early retirement when race day came about. After early contact from Lotus’ Pastor Maldonado, it was eventually brake failure that prompted an early bath for the driver. Meanwhile, Perez’s Brazilian teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, found himself in the barriers following a total front wing failure on the main straight. Speaking after the race, the 27-yearold said: “It’s a shame we lost the opportunity to get a great result today. “I didn’t have much warning that

there was a problem with the front wing - there was a harsh vibration just before it broke and after that I was heading straight into the barriers. “The final impact was not too bad because that part of the track is well protected and it absorbed the energy nicely. Up until the accident, things were looking very positive. “I had made a great start and was racing with the Red Bulls, which shows the step forward we have made with the b-spec car.” Otmar Szafnauer, Chief Operating Officer at Force India, said the whole team were determined to come back stronger in their next outing in Belgium next month. “Sometimes in racing things don’t go your way and this was certainly an unlucky weekend,” he said. “We will regroup ahead of Spa and come back stronger for the second half of the season.” Sebastian Vettel eventually claimed first sport for Ferrari in Hungary, whilst Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat (second) and Daniel Ricciardo (third) completed the podium line-up.

South Africa to ‘make history’ in India Winter series could mark de Villiers 100th cap Two of international cricket’s heavyweight sides will face off a record 12 times later this year as South Africa head to India for a mammoth series. The Proteas will play four test matches in the South Asian country as part of their longest ever tour to the subcontinent in what Cricket South Africa (CSA) has hailed a ‘landmark’ visit. A further five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 matches will also be staged when the first match kicks off on 2nd October before finally concluding just over two months later on 7th December.

“I am delighted to confirm, together with the BCCI, the Proteas’ itinerary for our tour of India later this year,” CSA chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, said in a statement. “This will be the longest tour that we have undertaken to India and the first time we will play a fourtest series. Both countries are now working to develop this into an iconic series. “Of note will be the second test match to be played in Bangalore where the Proteas previously secured our only ever test series win over India in India in 2000. “If all works out, this will be AB de Villiers’ 100th test

match and it could not be at a more appropriate venue as it has become AB’s second home through his involvement with the Royal Challengers Bangalore.” He added: “I wish to thank the BCCI for all their hard work and I now look forward to the test series becoming an iconic one.” South Africa have visited India for five test series since their readmission to international cricket in 1992, winning one, drawing two and losing two. A six-cessful weekend Lahiri drives forward at Major championship India’s top golfer, Anirban Lahiri, reaffirmed his rightful position amongst the world’s elite after earning a T30 position in last month’s British Open. Competing in the world’s oldest major, the 28-year-old fired a six-under par 282, over four days at The Old Course, in Fife, Scotland. After registering a three underpar, 69 in the opening round, he followed it up with a 70, 71 and 72, eventually finish the to tournament level with the likes of Rickie Fowler and Jim Furyk. It is Lahiri’s third appearance at a British Open and despite a strong showing, he says he was

disappointed with his final position. “I can’t say I played well because I dropped too many shots over the last two days, which is disappointing,” he said. “I hit into the bunker so many times this week and that cost me a shot every time.” Lahiri had looked like making a late charge towards the top of the leaderboard on day four after hitting four birdies on his front nine and just one bogey. However, just the one birdie on the back, and four bogies on the last six holes, proved detrimental to his hopes of breaking into the top ten.

“When you hit into these traps and get bitten, you realise how far you have to hit to stay away from them,” he added. “But it has been a great learning experience and you learn from them, especially when you play on the course for the first time.” Zach Johnson eventually clinched the coveted Claret Jug after a three-way play-off against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman. It is the American’s first British Open Championship and just his second Major, having last been victorious in the 2007 Masters Tournament.

Ashraf heading to Hampshire One month trial agreed for young Yorkshire seamer

Yorkshire’s Moin Ashraf has joined fellow LV= County Championship Division One side, Hampshire, on a one-month trial as he aims to return to the first team fold. The 23-year-old has not featured in a First XI match for Yorkshire since August 2013 when he took three wickets for 38 runs in a Yorkshire Bank 40 match against Glamorgan. Having been plying his trade in the Second XI, his contract is set to expire at the end of this season and a trial with the south coast club could offer much-wanted first team opportunities. The Bradford-born right-armer has slipped down the pecking order according to Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, who wished Ashraf luck prior to his trial. “Moin needs to be playing regular cricket,” Moxon said. “He has fallen down the pecking order at the club as far as playing first team cricket. At least three seamers – Matthew Fisher, Josh Shaw and Ben Coad – are ahead of him and clearly at this stage of his career he needs to be playing first team cricket. “His contract is up at the end of the season and no decision has been made about his future. It’s only right that Moin gets every opportunity to showcase his talents and see what’s out there for him. Hopefully it’ll work out for him at Hampshire over the next few weeks.”

Ashfaq admits that he knows the competition will be tough but only has one goal in mind. “I want to win Gold,” he said prior to flying out. “There will be some tough competition in Sofia but I know that I can beat anyone in my weight division on my day. “To win Gold in the Euros would set the momentum rolling for the Worlds and then it is onto the Olympics.” Prior to the tournament, Ashfaq had been training in Sheffield with competitors from Italy, Ireland, Slovakia and Morocco, as he prepared for the tournament. Competing at bantamweight, he

has already built up a reputation at amateur level, and is focussed on his first fight this week. “Training has gone really well and the training camp in Sheffield helped me sharpen up ahead of the championships,” he added. “I have had to overcome a few injuries in the past year but I feel better than ever and ready to compete now.” Ashfaq’s debut in the Euros will be another learning curve for the young boxer, who shone on the international stage last year, picking up a Silver medal at the Commonwealth games. GB Boxing's Performance Director, Rob McCracken, said: “This is a very talented group of boxers and the European Championships is an opportunity for them to demonstrate their quality and show they have what it takes to compete at the highest level and get to the Olympic Games next year. “The fact that it is part of the qualification pathway for Rio is an extra incentive for all of the boxers who will be looking to add to the success we have enjoyed at this competition in recent years.” Ashfaq is joined by six other boxers, including Flyweight Muhammad Ali, with the competition running until Sunday 16th August.
