NEW HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL

Dear Parents/Carers,

Lord Derby Academy are to proud to announce the result of the recent vote for our Head Boy and Head Girl for 2014/2015.

Yet another newsletter outlining how proud I am of the achievements that have taken place. Firstly I had the honour of announcing our Head Boy and Head Girl last Wednesday.

The quality of applications was fantastic but in the end the most voted for students were Billy Grey and Libby Jones who triumphed. I look forward to working with them next year.

On Tuesday our Year 9 students competed in a Stemnet Challenge Day against some of the top schools in Merseyside and came out on top.

Mr Parr would like to remind all parents/carers of our first Festival of Sport this coming Tuesday, 15th July.

Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE Kit. Finally I would like to pass on congratulations to our sister school in Trafford, Ashton on Mersey, which was voted the ‘Secondary School of the Year’ at the Manchester Evening News Awards this week.

Barry Bridden, Headteacher SCIENCE CHALLENGE DAY Twelve Year 9 students attended a trip to Liverpool John Moores University for a STEMNET (Science and Engineering) Challenge Day. During the day they had to complete four challenges which were E-Fit, Bridge Building, Robot Programming and Vehicle Design.

The students competed in mixed school teams.

The schools that attended the day were Merchant Taylors, Blue Coat, Hillside, Chesterfield and St. Francis Assisi.

The students represented the school in an excellent light and worked well in mixed teams.

After the challenges there was a presentation where the students were presented with first place on the E-Fit Challenge and runners up for Bridge Building and Vehicle Design.

Well done to the winning team, Mia Livesy and Harry Duke and to the runner up team, Callum Hanson and Ellie Strode.

MORE RUGBY SUCCESS FOR THE YEAR 9 BOYS On Tuesday 8th July the Year 9 Rugby Team travelled to North Liverpool Academy for the final round of the Merit League. C. Cahill stepped up to play for the team and he proved to be a valuable member of the team and the other team members commented after the games on his strength and determination.

They firstly played Fazakerley working well as a team by communicating and following the leadership skills of L. Gavin. They scored a massive 8 tries. The final score was 32-0 to LDA. In the second match they faced Cardinal Heenan and again L. Gavin led by example.

This match was closer than the first and the half time score was 8-8. L Gavin led the half time talk and the boys went back onto the field with determination to win.

However Cardinal Heenan managed to break through our defensive line to take the lead. LDA soon replied with a try and then held Cardinal Heenan up on the try line denying them a try. LDA then stormed through their defence twice to win the match 24-12. Well done to all involved!

YEAR 10 VISIT TO CRONTON COLLEGE The whole of Year 10 attended a Taster Day at Cronton College where students were involved in a variety of activities from Psychology to Animal Management and even got to race turtles!

Students were then treated to a BBQ lunch with a live performance from one of the college bands.

The day wrapped up with a hooler hoop competition and a wonderful and educational day was had by all.

STAR PERFORMER We would like to congratulate Samantha Gerrard from Year 10 for her fantastic performance in Bugsy Malone at the Epstein Theatre, Liverpool last weekend.

We look forward to seeing Sam in Hairspray sometime in November (dates to be confirmed).

CONGRATULATIONS TO ASHTON ON MERSEY Ashton on Mersey School (part of the Dean Trust) was voted "Secondary School of the Year" at the Manchester Evening News Awards this week.

Well done to all at Ashton on Mersey!

We have received a message of thanks to go to all of you who supported the Family Fun Day last Sunday held at Lord Derby Academy in aid of ‘Alan’ who is battling terminal cancer (some of Alan’s children are students at LDA) . A fantastic amount of £2000 was raised. Our good wishes go to Alan and his family.
