HEADTEACHER Dear Parents/Carers, Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I was once again blown away by our Festival of Sport on Tuesday, to see all our students bonding as Form Teams, supporting and encouraging each other to do well.

Even more pleasing was how each individual felt good about the contribution they had made.

In addition it was great to see the staff don their jogging bottoms and join in the activities. A big thank you to all parents/ carers for ensuring all students came into school in their correct kit.

Another big event this week was our rugby team going to train with Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club. Also great to see Chloe Collins and Eleanor Guy represent the school so well in singing events last week - please see article overleaf.

SPORT TAKES CENTER STAGE AT LORD DERBY ACADEMY Our first ever Festival of Sport was held at Lord Derby Academy on Tuesday 15th July.

The event involved all pupils from years 7 to 10 competing all day in a variety of sporting and fitness activities.

EARLY FINISH TIME ON WEDNESDAY On Wednesday 23rd July students will finish for the summer at 12.40pm (lunch will be available until 1.00pm) YEAR 9 PSHE ROAD SAFETY EVENT On Friday 11th July, a group of Year 9 students attended a Road Safety Event at the Training Development Centre in Croxteth. The event was funded and organised by the Fire Service and supported by the Knowsley Road Safety Team.

Emma Darcy from Year 9 gave us this report: “We had a great time, we got to take part in fun activities such as testing our driving skills, reaction times and cycling skills.

We were given talks by firemen and the Road Safety Team.

It was interesting and very informative. My favourite part was when I wore „beer goggles‟ and had to try to kick a ball at a target.

We also watched two people being cut out of a car by firemen. It showed what happened after a car crash.

It was a fun morning and we all learnt lots of things about road safety.”

Activities included athletics, football, dance, table tennis, basketball, rounders, fitness boot camp and tennis.

Students earned points every time they took part in an activity for their form group and our students displayed a fantastic attitude and teamwork throughout the day.

The Festival of Sport proved to be a great day for our school.

VISIT TO WIGAN WARRIORS

Last Thursday the Lord Derby Academy rugby players travelled to Wigan Warriors for a HALTs performance session which is how all the Wigan Scholarship and academy players train.

The session began at 1pm in the gym with the boys in groups of 5. They had to complete 150 of each exercise and couldn’t move on until the exercise was complete.

The exercises included high rows, ground to over head with a weight, sit ups, burpees and squats. The boys embraced the challenge and impressed the strength and conditioning coach.

They then had a 2 minute debrief and water intake before they moved on to the next part of the training which took part in ‘the pit’.

The pit is a room which is padded from floor to ceiling to allow the players to practice tackling techniques without as much impact. In here the boys learnt how to Greco Wrestle which is what is needed when tackling to ensure when challenged for the ball they remain in possession and vice versa for defending. The boys once again put full effort into the session.

The boys were then debriefed and taken outside for the final skills session. During this session the boys had to put all the skills they had learnt inside into a game situation.

Finally the coach talked to the boys about what happened at the end of a session. The boys completed the review session were they discussed as a team what they had done well and where they needed to improve.

Lord Derby Academy players were a credit to themselves, and the academy in the way they conducted themselves and in the amount of effort and teamwork they showed.

They all stepped up in the environment and trained like professional rugby players.

Well done boys.

MISS THWAITE’S SHARK TALE We would like to wish Miss Thwaite lots of luck this Sunday as she takes on a sponsored Shark Dive! She is getting up close and personal with10 foot sharks to raise money for a local family who’s father is seriously ill. Any donations would be welcome!

RISING STARS OF YEAR 9 Chloe Collins Sang on the Ferry across the Mersey as part of 'Our Big Gig' last weekend. She sang 'Don’t let me down' by the Beatles and was broadcast live on Radio Merseyside.

Eleanor Guy, was the winner of 'Knowsley Rising Star' on King George V Playing Fields last weekend.

Eleanor won by singing one of her many self written songs as well as 'Valerie'.

Both girls are now taking their expertise to Anglesey on a leadership trip with Lord Derby Academy and a number of Year 5 children and we look forward to hearing them in our end of year assemblies next week.

Well done girls, we are all very proud of you here at Lord Derby Academy!

Nathan Wolland Throughout this year, Nathan Wolland has been attending the Accrington Stanley Under 15’s Football Academy on a weekly basis. As a talented goalkeeper, Nathan has undergone intensive training as well as managing his studies.

Alongside weekly training, Nathan also plays for Knowsley on Saturdays and Accrington Stanley Academy on Sundays.

Nathan has since been scouted for Manchester United Academy and has been attending training there three times a week. This summer he will be taking part in the Manchester United Premier Cup Tournament with teams from all around the world.

Throughout all this hard work, Nathan has continued to excel in his studies and last term was awarded Platinum awards from his teachers for both English and Maths, proving that his hard work and dedication has paid off.

Lord Derby Academy would like to wish Nathan every success for the summer, as well as his future career.

Well done Nathan!!
