director’s message As the new director of Ashland Parks and Recreation, a frequent question I hear is “How are you enjoying it so far?” Working in Lithia Park and representing Ashland’s parks and recreation system has been such a valuable opportunity. I can honestly say it’s a pleasure to come to work every day and I’m sure that won’t change. I’m a city planner by training and have a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Utah. Since my earliest planning classes I’ve been absorbed by “people places” – plazas, downtowns, neighborhoods and parks. I love these spaces because they promote human participation in common areas. For me, such human-to-human participation is the best part of being in a community. In city planning or parks and recreation, I see my job the same: building community. I’m originally from Utah but my family and I now consider southern Oregon our home. Four years ago my wife and I moved with our four children to Grants Pass, where I took a position as the community development director. After a few years, my department absorbed parks and recreation and I began working on the interrelationships of parks, recreation and city planning. In my opinion, they are inseparable and dependent upon one another. Outside of work hours, I enjoy being with my family in the outdoors. We camp in the great parks of Oregon, explore caves, fish, hike, raft and cycle. Aside from our kids’ numerous sports activities, our household is filled with music, as our children enjoy playing many musical instruments. I want to thank the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission for the opportunity to serve in this position. I look forward to many future directors’ messages with Ashland Parks and Recreation. Until next time, I hope you will take part in some of the recreation programs offered in this guide. They’re provided for the sake of your health and the well-being of our community. Sincerely,

Michael A. Black Ashland Parks & Recreation Director

Commuter Bikes Ashland Parks & Recreation is dedicated to the health and wellness of all of our citizens as well as our employees. In October we purchased three bikes for staff to use in their daily trips around the city. Not only do we want our employees to remain active, we want to reduce our reliance on fossil fuel.

Rogue Valley Bird Day Saturday, May 9, 8am to noon www.RogueValleyBirdDay.net

“I really enjoy being out in nature and have found the more often I do, the more ‘once in a lifetime’ sightings or events I experience. The park, when I’m patient, also offers some good opportunities for close-up photography of birds and maybe a mammal or two!” Vince Zauskey is a long time resident of the Medford/Ashland area, and has been volunteering at North Mountain Park since its inception in 2000. During that time, he has had some memorable wildlife sightings at the park, including a Northern Pygmy Owl, a Gray Fox and a Peregrine Falcon. Vince helps guide the park’s development as a member of the North Mountain Park Steering Committee. He also conducts the “Calling All Birds” contest at the annual Rogue Valley Bird Day. Vince is pictured here, doing one of his amazing bird call imitations. In addition to bird watching and birding by ear, Vince enjoys photography and fly fishing on the Rogue River.

get to know your parks! — New Park & Trail Finder Web App

We are excited to launch a new Park and Trail Finder Web Application (App). The app is available on the Ashland Parks and Recreation home page at www.AshlandParksandRec.org, or directly at gis.ashland.or.us/AshlandParksandRec.

The new web app highlights all of the parks and open spaces our department manages. Users can find basic information, including addresses and park hours, in addition to a complete list of park amenities. A photo gallery is offered for most locations. The app also features trails, offering trail names and distances for each highlighted segment. Parks can be searched by location, name or activity. For example, you can search for a park in Ashland that includes restrooms, swimming facilities and picnic tables. The app then displays the parks meeting those criteria. You can also search for parks in or nearby your current location. The new web app was developed by Rickey Fite, Engineering Technician for the City of Ashland GIS Department. Fite used tools provided by ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute), a company that supplies GIS software, web GIS and geodatabase management applications. The web app map was created by Lea Richards, GIS Specialist for the City of Ashland. The app can be pushed to the home screen of your Android or IOS device (smartphone, tablet, iPad or iPhone) for quick and easy access on the go. See the information section of the web app, or online help, for complete instructions. We would like to extend a generous thank you to the City of Ashland GIS Department for their hard work and coordination of the new Park and Trail Finder Web Application for the benefit of citizens and visitors of Ashland.

— Ashland Creek Park The Ashland Creek Property, purchased from the Vogel family in 2001, will soon become an official City of Ashland park. The new park will feature: expanded/renovated community gardens, playground, ADA trail loop, mulit-use playing field lawn and more! We are working diligently to open in mid to late spring, 2015. Learn more at www.ashland.or.us/AshlandCreekPark.

Demonstration Area

At North Mountain Park, citizens are encouraged to convert thirsty lawns to water-wise landscapes. Now, a new installation demonstrates two water saving alternatives: artificial turf and pervious pavers. Synthetic lawn has come a long way since the Astro-turf of the 1970s! This new installation helps demonstrate the significant improvements and advantages of synthetic lawn. Advantages of Synthetic Lawn: • Reduce water use • No need for fertilizer and pesticides • No weeding or maintenance with gas-powered equipment • 8 to 25 years of life expectancy; depending on wear Installation of synthetic lawn demonstration area • Easy to clean: vacuum, brush, rake, blow or spray • Eco-friendly infill helps deodorize and prevent the growth of bacteria • 100% recyclable and engineered using renewable and recycled materials • Soy-based, with no harmful chemicals • Permeable, reduces runoff and sogginess throughout the year • Durable; gophers can’t dig through it The demonstration area is surrounded by pervious pavers, another popular landscaping alternative. Pervious pavers allow rain to filter back into the ground water. By reducing run-off, they also keep pollution out of storm drains and creeks. Pervious pavers can accept the weight of a car and make great driveways, paths and patios. With water shortages continuing across the country, many people are embracing the advantages of such alternatives. The new North Mountain Park demonstration area helps citizens decide whether these lawnsubstitutes would work for their properties. Other resources are available, including the City’s water-wise website (www.ashlandsaveswater.org), to help people make the conservation choice best suited for them. Thank you to our partners: Leave Your Mark, Carol’s Colors, and Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District. These local businesses teamed up to fund, supply and install the WaterWise Landscaping Demonstration Area. Synthetic lawn and pervious pavers at North Mountain Park

I love the outdoors, biking and being crafty, so I regularly help out with park clean-ups, the Bike Swap and the Bear Creek Salmon Festival. I like getting the opportunity to hang out with fellow Ashlanders while helping make our pretty city even prettier. Butler-Peroz zi Fountain in Need of Repair

The Ashland Parks Foundation has a goal to refurbish the Butler-Perozzi Fountain in Lithia Park. The fountain, situated on a formal terrace near the sycamore grove, a rose garden and the Butler Memorial Band Shelter, was offered as a memorial gift to the park in 1915 by Gwin Butler and Domingo Perozzi. The fountain was sculpted by Antonio Frilli in Florence, Italy, in the early 1900s and completely restored in the 1980s. Funding is needed for general repairs and vandalism. Due to its prime location within Lithia Park, the fountain is vandalized more frequently than any other area in Lithia Park. Donations for the restoration project can be made online at www.AshlandParksFoundation.com/ Campaigns. Share your favorite pictures of the fountain on the Ashland Parks & Recreation Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/AshlandParksandRec.

This change will take effect with the Summer 2015 Rec Guide, which comes out in mid to late April, 2015. Online guides are always available at www.ashland.or.us/RecGuide. —Thank you!

we’ll see you in the park and on facebook!
