director’s message co

I always look forward to the changing of the seasons for so many reasons. The changes bring different weather patterns, new vegetation, sun, rain and it also brings another edition of the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission’s Program Guide. The guide is published three times per year – Winter/Spring, Summer and Fall. Each guide is filled with activities for all ages ranging from Golf Camps (p. 43) to Ukulele U. (p. 10). The Recreation staff looks forward to expanding the programs each season and offering something new for everyone in the family. Programs being offered this summer include: 1. Planting for Pollinators; Critical Pollinators; Bumble Bee Identification and Monitoring (pp. 18-19) – Ashland is an official Bee City USA and now you can take APRC classes to “learn how we can encourage and increase the number of pollinators that visit our gardens each year.” 2. Little Gnomes Nature Camp (p. 31) – “This day camp for preschoolers and kindergartners will draw inspiration from forest schools and Waldorf education as we explore and play at North Mountain Park. Circle time with movement and songs, stories, games and crafts will be used to celebrate and learn about the plants, creeks, ponds and animals around us.” 3. FootGolf and Archery at Oak Knoll Golf Course (pp. 43-44) – Don’t play traditional golf? That’s ok; your access to Oak Knoll is expanding and now you will be able to use the course for FootGolf – a golf/soccer hybrid – and archery classes. This is just a sample of some of the programs to be offered this summer. If a recreation class isn’t for you, perhaps you want to take a stroll through our newest park, Ashland Creek Park, take a dip in the Daniel Meyer Pool or have lunch at the Ashland Senior Center. However you decide to spend your leisure time, we hope you decide to spend some of it with us. Sincerely,

Michael A. Black Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission Director

Visitors can also enjoy the park’s Demonstration Gardens, nature trails, pavilion, picnic and play areas.

Friend & Volunteer of the Nature Center

Cynthia Taylor

“I often walk and meditate in the park when I’m not volunteering. I couldn’t seem to get enough of watching the salmon in Bear Creek this past fall either. I am so awed and inspired by the dedication of the long-term volunteers. I hope to become one of them!”

Cynthia Taylor has been volunteering at North Mountain Park for a year now and offered her creative and administrative support with the Salmon Spiral and interpretive cards. She has taught through two seasons of School Programs, and students delight in her gentle but enthusiastic teaching style. Most recently, Cynthia has become a valued animal-actor for the Preschool Puppet Show. Cynthia is a renaissance woman who enjoys singing, yoga, tai chi, hiking, birding, rafting, studying survival skills and drumming on her own hand-made hoop drum! Oregon abounds with all the things she loves to do: theatre, film festivals, music and art. As a lover of the outdoors, she delights in the endless recreation opportunities in Southern Oregon.

Volunteer—Garden, Get Grubby & Learn! If you enjoy working outdoors, the beautiful Nature Center gardens could use your special touch. Volunteer gardeners work together every Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information, call the Nature Center at 541.488.6606.

— HISTORIC LITHIA PARK STORY MAP We are excited to launch a new Story Map that highlights the historic sites and features of Lithia Park. The map is available from our home page, www.AshlandParksandRec. org, or directly at gis.ashland.or.us/LithiaHistoric. The Story Map was created by Lea Richards, GIS Analyst for the City of Ashland. Did you know that the Butler-Perozzi Fountain came from the 1915 World’s Fair, or the Ashland Community Center was originally donated to the City by the Women’s Civic Club in the early 1900s? Take a moment to relax and enjoy this historical tour. Many thanks to the City of Ashland GIS Department, especially Lea Richards!

Ashland is a-Buzz! On December 16, 2014, Ashland, Oregon, took its place as the fifth Bee City USA community with a unanimous vote of the City Council. Mayor Stromberg said, “Ashland’s City Council let it be known that they understand the importance of pollinators, and therefore want to make this city even more pollinator-friendly.” Citizens of Ashland are becoming increasingly conscious of the important role pollinators play in our ecosystems, our food production, and our lives. According to the Xerces Society of Invertebrate Conservation, “One in every three bites of food we eat is courtesy of insect pollination.” Considering the dramatic declines in pollinator populations around the globe, the City of Ashland and the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission are choosing to support bees and other pollinators through the Bee City USA movement. The City plans to honor its Bee City designation through community Staff, Citizens and the RV Pollinator Project Celebrate Bee City Designation education, celebrations and the stewardship of native, pesticide-free, pollinator-friendly plants. Check out the bee-themed classes available this season—look for the little bee! For information about getting involved with pollinator education and habitat development in Ashland, contact Parks and Recreation’s Bee City USA liaison Libby VanWyhe at libby.vanwyhe@ashland.or.us.

Summer Water Conservation Did you know you can reduce your water use up to 60% just by making simple adjustments to your irrigation system and your watering schedule? Follow these tips to ensure you are managing your irrigation efficiently, and help our community make the most of our water this summer. • Adjust your watering schedule every two weeks throughout the summer to account for the changing water needs of your plants. If you are unsure how much water your plants need, visit www.ashland.or.us/conserve for a guide to watering in the summer or call our watering hotline at 541.552.2057. • Turn off your irrigation system if we receive rain, and adjust watering times accordingly • Water between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to avoid losing water to wind and evaporation • Check soil moisture (using a moisture meter) before watering • Fix all leaks promptly, no matter how small they may seem • Adjust sprinklers to avoid watering sidewalks and driveways • Attach a shut-off nozzle on your hose when hand watering plants • Use soaker hoses and drip irrigation to water flowerbeds, vegetable gardens, shrubs and trees • Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful. Visit www.ashlandsaveswater.org for some fresh Water Wise landscaping ideas The City of Ashland offers several resources to assist you in managing your water use, including FREE sprinkler system evaluations. For more information on the City’s conservation programs, visit our website at www.ashland.or.us/conserve or call 541.552.2062.

Butler-Peroz zi Fountain in Need of Repair

The Ashland Parks Foundation has a goal to refurbish the Butler-Perozzi Fountain in Lithia Park. The fountain, situated on a formal terrace near the sycamore grove, a rose garden and the Butler Memorial Band Shelter, was offered as a memorial gift to the City of Ashland in 1915 by Gwin Butler and Domingo Perozzi. The fountain was sculpted by Antonio Frilli in Florence, Italy, in the early 1900s and completely restored in the 1980s. Funding is needed for general repairs and vandalism. Due to its prime location within Lithia Park, the fountain is vandalized more frequently than any other area in Lithia Park. Donations for the restoration project can be made online at www.AshlandParksFoundation.com/Campaigns. Share your favorite pictures of the fountain on the APRC Facebook, www.Facebook.com/AshlandParksandRec.
