director’s message Interim Director’s Message from Ashland Parks & Recreation Commissioner & Chair Stefani Seffinger When the Director’s message was prepared for the Summer 2014 Recreation Guide, Don Robertson announced his retirement. He wrote: “This will be my final Director’s message… .” As Chair of the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission, it is my honor to file an interim Director’s Message on behalf of Parks staff and the new Parks Director. Ashland is fortunate in so many ways. One of those fortunate facts is that we have a very talented group of employees who care deeply about our parks system. Over the years I have been lucky enough to visit many parks systems in Oregon and throughout much of the United States. I can tell you there are many communities who would give everything to have the parks and recreation department we so enjoy. As Don leaves his role as Director, it is with mixed feelings that the Parks Commission says good-bye. Don has been with us for nearly 11 years. He has helped restore amenities, build parks and develop staff during his time in Ashland. He has also been the recipient of so much great work by his predecessors and staff. At the same time, the Commission is energized by the search for his replacement. It is the Commission’s responsibility to select the next person to sit in that chair. This is a responsibility we take very seriously. By the time this guide is published and as you read this, I suspect we will have a new Parks Director in place. Please take the time to stop by the office and welcome the new person to their role. Sincerely,

Ashland Parks and Recreation Commissioner & Chair, Stefani Seffinger

Ashland Parks & Recreation has a NEW LOOK... I proudly present our new logo to you. What is a logo besides a pretty picture? A marketing piece, a brand, an identity... and most of all, a symbol of who we are or what we stand for. What does our logo mean? Here is my interpretation: The two swishes represent mind and body and their interaction in our health. The date represents our history. The bough represents our commitment to the environment. The Parks & Recreation is who we are. And the tilted Ashland represents our community moving forward.

Don Robertson, Interim Director

Susan Sullivan

“I adore the staff ! Everyone including all the other volunteers who I have met, are so warm and welcoming and share the same sense of mission and values to help create a positive learning experience for kids and adults. It is a joy to work with such a competent, creative and supportive group of people.” Susan Sullivan is new to Ashland and a new volunteer at North Mountain Park, but that hasn’t stopped her from whole-heartedly jumping in and helping out with the school field programs. In April, 2014, she began reviewing the curriculum standards for the program and then assisted in teaching, “History of the Rogue Valley.” Susan also helps out with cleaning tasks in the Nature Center, weeding in the gardens at North Mountain Park or other parks in Ashland. She is also a regular volunteer at the Tudor Guild and the Britt Festival. Less than a year ago, Susan moved to Ashland from Portland. For over 20 years she dreamed of living in Ashland. She was drawn to the climate and unique small-town character of Ashland. She loves outdoor activities such as gardening, kayaking, biking, hiking, camping, skiing and birding. She takes pleasure in cooking, reading and all of the arts… opera, theatre, classical and eclectic performances.

Green Living Tips — W

ater

Conserving Landscaping

We can all help our community conserve water. With thoughtful planning, our gardens and landscapes can be modified to require less irrigation. Before turning on the sprinklers full blast, let’s consider these water-wise tips from Parks Commissioner Rick Landt: • If watering is a regular occurrence, think about whether the vegetation will be laid upon, played upon or eaten. Lawns in our semi-arid climate should be considered a living carpet rather than an aesthetic feature. For the sake of conservation, other landscape elements with aesthetic value should be considered, including drought-tolerant plants that require less irrigation. • Fall is a great time to plant shrubs and trees, when seasonal rains can replace the heavy initial watering normally required in spring and summer. Drought-tolerant plants, small in size and heavily mulched, will require little water next summer. (Tip: one-gallon pots are ideal for new plantings. Smaller plants will commonly overtake larger ones after five years.)

Fall color from Glendora grape vines, drought-tolerant and edible grape

• Mulch generously. Although raised beds may be necessary for disabled and elderly gardeners, in general avoid berms and raised beds, as they dry out quickly and require significantly more water than un-raised growing areas. • Drought-tolerant plants can be identified from the City’s Water Wise Landscaping website at www.ashlandsaveswater.org. Also check out Sunset’s Western Garden Book or inquire at local nurseries. • Watch the weather data at www.ashland.or.us/CityWeather. Use evapotranspiration, a.k.a. ET, to gauge daily water needs. Apply water at a rate similar to what is evaporated and transpired each day. Carefully observe soil and plant health to determine watering needs. Be sure to check out water conservation classes and workshops on pages 16—17.
