message from the director Autumn 2013 Ashland Parks & Recreation

Wow, what a summer! Thankfully, the long hot summer of 2013 is finally transitioning to fall and you can almost feel a chill in the air. We’ll soon be enjoying one of our glorious season changes. Like many, fall is my favorite time of the year in Lithia Park. The colors of the park, especially in the Japanesestyle garden, are spectacular and not-to-be-missed. This autumn you will see improvements in the garden, including a new gateway with bench seating and plantings in the entrance section. The proposed upgrades will greatly enhance the experience of park users in this much-loved section of Lithia Park. Due to the extreme heat of summer 2013, many swimmers came out to visit the Daniel Meyer Pool at Hunter Park. While enjoying the cool water they might have noticed recent improvements to our pool facility. Gone were the old wooden sun shades, replaced with new, brightly colored shades to enhance the look and usability of the pool deck area. Pool patrons also might have noticed our freshly poured sidewalks and a new ping pong table at the park. In Lithia Park we are just winding up our summer construction projects at the Atkinson Bridge and Enders Shelter, two landmark amenities. The bridge, built in 1912, crosses over from the parking area into the children’s playground while the shelter, built in 1909, sits adjacent to the Butler Bandshell. Both historic structures are included in the Lithia Park entry in the National Registry of Historic Places. The Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission believes in preserving historic features in parks when possible, as they understand their critical importance to many within our community. Speaking of historic preservations, our next renewal project will be the Butler-Perozzi Fountain. This elegant structure in Lithia Park is badly deteriorating. The Ashland Parks Foundation began a fundraising campaign in spring 2013 to help offset project costs. We’ve received numerous small, private contributions toward this effort. To help fund this landmark restoration, Parks staff will also be applying for a grant. If you are interested in contributing to the Butler-Perozzi Fountain project, please visit the A shland Park s Foundation at w w w. ashlandparksfoundation.com or call the Parks office at 541-488-5340. It’s a big undertaking and every contribution, whether large or small, helps ensure the structure’s continuation in Lithia Park for another 100 years. Enjoy your parks this fall!

Did you know that in 2012 the Ashland Parks & Recreation Department purchased over 260,000 dog-waste bags? Wow, that’s a lot of doggie-doo! Way to go, Ashland residents, for picking up after fido! Woof Waste dispensers (formerly Mutt Mitt dispensers) are located throughout the City of Ashland at various parks and trails. Recently, the Ashland Parks Commission expanded the possibilities for dog owners by modifying the rules for dogs in ‘dog-friendly” parks within the City of Ashland. The commission approved allowing leashed dogs in more sections of current “dog-friendly” parks, including grassy areas. Dogs are no longer restricted to paved pathways or six feet adjacent to pathways. Dogs are NOT allowed in playground areas or ball fields in parks with those amenities, nor are they allowed at North Mountain Park or Lithia Park. Learn more about our dog-friendly parks and open spaces by visiting www.ashland.or.us/DogFriendly. “More and more Ashland residents and visitors own and travel with their dogs. I am thrilled to see this policy modification, as it really responds to our changing demographics.” –Parks Commission Chair Stefani Seffinger Longtime Ashland Parks & Rec instructor Colleen Shanahan offers many programs to help your dog become the best possible companion! Ashland Parks Foundation Share in a Living Treasure THE PURPOSE The purpose of the Ashland Parks Foundation is to enhance Ashland’s quality of life by financially supporting its parks system.

The Foundation has a goal in 2013 to refurbish the Butler-Perozzi Fountain in Lithia Park. The fountain, situated on a formal terrace near the sycamore grove, a rose garden and the Butler Memorial Band Shelter, was offered as a memorial gift to the park in 1915 by Gwin Butler and Domingo Perozzi. The fountain was sculpted by Antonio Frilli in Florence, Italy, in the early 1900s and completely restored in the 1980s. Funding is needed for general repairs and vandalism. Due to its prime location within Lithia Park, the fountain is vandalized more frequently than any other area in Lithia Park. You can help the Foundation reach their restoration goal for the Butler-Perozzi Fountain by making a taxdeductible contribution.
