Message from the director Summer 2013 Projects & Programs Ashland Parks & Recreation

When you think of Lithia Park, what comes to mind? Is it one of the two duck ponds, the children’s playground area, the Japanesestyle garden, or the Butler-Perozzi Fountain? These are just some of the iconic features in Lithia Park. Each feature plays a role in the experiences and impressions of our citizens and visitors and each feature requires periodic major renovations or repairs. Several years ago the upper and lower duck ponds were rehabilitated. The lower pond received a new waterfall, new filtration system, and a replaced small arched bridge while the upper pond was cleaned from top to bottom and used as a water source for an environmentally conservative irrigation system in upper Lithia Park. Over the past few years the children’s playground received new equipment, including a climbing rock, play structure, and the ever-so-popular “webclimber.” The Japanese-style garden will soon have a new entry gateway courtesy of a dedicated park volunteer, Ann Auble. Designed by local architect Ian Wessler, the gateway will replace one that was removed several years ago. The grand dame of them all, the graceful and iconic Butler-Perozzi Fountain, remains in a state of disrepair due to age and vandalism. Because of its prime, central location within Lithia Park, the fountain is vandalized more frequently than any other area in the park. The Ashland Parks Commission budgeted several thousand dollars for fountain repairs in fiscal year 2012-2013. The plan was to restore stucco finishes on the fountain surround and pool. Unfortunately, as staff worked with contractors, a host of other problems were identified and the price of repairs increased many times over. Restorations and protections of the foundation, stairs, pool, and base are now estimated to cost $500,000. The Commission is determining whether to replace the fountain with a suitably graceful fountain or restore it to its former glory. In the meantime, the Ashland Parks Foundation, in conjunction with the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Visitor and Convention Bureau, has a 2013 goal of raising awareness and funds for fountain repairs. To provide a tax-deductible donation toward this valuable reconstruction project, please call the Ashland Parks Foundation at 541.488.5340 or visit www.AshlandParksFoundation.com. In the meantime, please enjoy our summer 2013 program offerings and services. Come out and enjoy a park soon!

Backyard Wildlife Habitat

No matter how big or small your property, from an apartment balcony to a 100-acre farm, anyone can create a beautiful garden that attracts wildlife by providing food, water, cover and a place to raise their young. In addition to enhancing habitat for native wildlife, your efforts will also help reduce runoff and pollution throughout the region. To get started, you can visit the Demonstration Gardens at North Mountain Park to see examples of gardening for wildlife. Some of the features include: a butterfly garden, bird buffet, reptile amphibian garden and native plant garden. Docent-led tours take place the 2nd Wednesday during the summer months, June through September, at 9:30 a.m. Or you can join us at the Nature Center on Tuesday, May 21 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for “Creating Backyard Wildlife Habitat, ” a class presented by Lori Tella, Urban and Community Conservationist with Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District—Details page 19. This program will cover four elements: naturescaping with native plants, removal of aggressive weeds, stormwater management and wildlife stewardship. By integrating these four ideas into your property you can reduce water use, and the need for fertilizers and pesticides, all while providing healthy wildlife habitat.

The Foundation has a goal in 2013 to refurbish the Butler-Perozzi Fountain in Lithia Park. The fountain, situated on a formal terrace near the sycamore grove, a rose garden and the Butler Memorial Band Shelter, was offered as a memorial gift to the park in 1915 by Gwin Butler and Domingo Perozzi. The fountain was sculpted by Antonio Frilli in Florence, Italy, in the early 1900s and completely restored in the 1980s. Funding is needed for general repairs and vandalism. Due to its prime location within Lithia Park, the fountain is vandalized more frequently than any other area in Lithia Park. You can help the Foundation reach their restoration goal for the Butler-Perozzi Fountain by making a tax-deductible contribution. John Hunt, along with his wife Mary, fell in love with Lithia Park during their annual visits to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. After 20 years of enjoying the beauty of Ashland and Lithia Park as a visitor, they recently retired here and John soon joined the Ashland Parks & Recreation volunteer team. He takes part in weekend park clean-ups as a way to give back to the parks he so loves. Not only has this dedicated volunteer participated in over 12 park clean-ups this past year, John can be found on his own attacking the invasive blackberries along Ashland Creek! “We [Mary and I] continue to love the parks and make use of them every chance we get. Volunteering to help keep them clean is a gratifying way to repay some of the pleasure we get from them.”
