LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Hello. You probably have seen the new Cyber Key. You had to because you retrieved the 5th issue of the District Newsletter! If you haven’t noticed it is undergoing a few changes. Change can be good over time, but hold onto your horses as we continue to make constant revisions to the Cyber Key. Speaking of changes, changes will occur over the course of the year. Have you ever thought of documenting them? You should. You can document the growth you have made over the course of the year. Changes are occurring constantly and many times it zooms right under out nose, avoiding detection. Embrace the change, because without change there is no progress. If the new term is starting off a little different than the previous year, accept it for what it is. If it really makes you a unhappy camper, voice your opinion. Don’t be quick to judge the new year! Time passes by and you can’t compare one year to the previous. Live 2010 like 2010 and when 2011 rolls around, treat 2011 like 2011. Remain positive in the early stages of your club and do not automatically hate it. It’s a fresh new school year and changes are taking place. Accept it, document it, if you really don’t like it, address it. Buzzin’ with spirit, Your 2010-2011 Executive Board, Governor Diana Nguyen Secretary Breigh Dang Treasurer Hue Tran Technology Editor Andrew Shin

EXECUTIVE PRESIDENTS AND REPORT VICE PRESIDENTS WORDS FROM THE

TO OFFICERS

You have a lot in store for you. October is a rather busy month. UNICEF trick or treat for others boxes should be passed out this month. Do not be afraid to carry them around school and to collect change from strangers. The figurines on the box look so cute that people would want to donate anyways! Look under, around, and inside your sofa for loose quarters. Force everyone who cusses to pay up a quarter. Every cent collected will go to a great cause. Fall Rally is also coming up. Fall Rally is a must go. Who’s going? The question should be ―Who isn’t going?‖ Everyone is going and I mean it. Every year thousands of people go. Part of the ticket sales go directly to the Pediatric Trauma Program which prevents accidental injuries, saving the lives of many children. So go, it’s a great cause and make sure to help your division fundraise for PTP by attending local fundraisers or purchasing a nifty shirt.

I finally can say, ―School is in session for everyone!‖ Bummer that summer is officially gone; however, yay to regular Key Club meetings! It is exciting to see how this year will unravel. Remember the district goals: 750 thousand hours of service, 100 thousand dollars for PTP, and 42 thousand members. Continue your efforts to keep serving, fundraising, and contributing; there is no stop to members, fundraising efforts, and service hours. Continue to strive for the district goal and beyond! The Presidents’ and Vice Presidents’ Manual is also completed. In it you will find general information and also helpful tips. Ice breakers included! Download it, stay green, and do not print it out. Say…Did you notice that the front page is rather blank? There is an explanation. That space could have your face on it! Please submit pictures to your following Lt. Governors that you feel is Presidents’ and Vice Presidents’ Manual cover page worthy. I will look through the visual submissions sent by Lt. Governor’s and select what I believe fits the cover page best. Start sending in the pictures to your Lt. Governor NOW! Another notable mention is Trick or Treating for Others. The orange boxes should arrive to your school shortly. If they do not come, please look on the UNICEF website to acquire more information on how you can help. While you juggle Key Club in your life, it sometimes gets easy to procrastinate on other things like college applications. Don’t procrastinate on that. Key Club can wait a little bit, always keep school in mind. Oh! The UC Application is open now. Get to it. Fall Rally fliers are also out. Hurry and organize those who are attending, educate them with divisional cheers, and continue fundraising for PTP.

YOUR PICTURE COULD BE HERE. Please submit in your pictures.

EXECUTIVE REPORT SECRETARIES WORDS FROM THE

THE SECRETARY

TO OFFICERS

HELLO CNH BEES!

HI CNH SECRETARIES!

I hope everyone is enjoying their first few weeks back to school! Remember, Fall has some of the busiest months for Key Club members. Not only is Fall Rally coming up, but also Regional Training Conferences (RTCs), club rush, dues collection, and your service projects and fundraisers. In order to have enough time for Key Club, stay on top of your schoolwork, spend time with family, and take care of any of your more important priorities first. These next few months are going to be so much fun, and I can’t wait to see you all very soon, whether it is at RTC or Fall Rally North or South.

As we head into Fall, remember that this is the season for membership recruitment and dues collection. Not only is it important for your club to collect dues, but also to obtain information from your members and create your club rosters/ directories. Many of you already know about the Club Roster that is included in your Monthly Report Forms (MRFs). While you are not required to use that spreadsheet, it is a very useful resource because all of the club information inputted in that roster transfers directly to the Service Record tab. Therefore, I highly recommend that you utilize the Club Roster that is included in the MRF. On that note, if your club still has not submitted its information to the online Club Officer Information form, I please ask that you do this as soon as possible. You can find this online form on the CNH CyberKey (cnhkeyclub.org) under the main page updates or on the Secretary page. In order to complete this form with ease, I recommend you complete the Club Elections tab on the MRF first because much of the information you provide on that tab will also be asked for on the online form. Again, I would like to stress the importance of submitting your club information online ASAP if you have not done so already .

HERE ARE SOME ITEMS TO KEEP IN MIND FOR FALL

FOR OFFICERS

HELLO CNH BEES!

HELLO CNH TREASURERS!

School is in session, so I hope you are ready for what is to come. Your club number and password should be coming soon to your advisors; please be patient. If you have not received your number and password by the middle of October, go ahead and have your club advisor call the 1-800-KIWANIS number to ask for it. Remember the time difference between here and Key Club International, so call at a reasonable time. Recruiting should be a priority in your club right now. Tons of posters should be up at your school about Key Club and Key Club should be on the morning announcements! Try to either retain or grow in membership so that you can be recognized at District Convention for your work. Remember two things: 1) it is important to retain membership, not just grow, and 2) you can recruit members ALL YEAR LONG, so don’t stop! Your members should ANDREW be paying their membership FROM SHINright now. Make sure you are careful and organized while handling this process. Keep an organized list so that when October 1st comes, you are ready to update the Membership Update Center with all your members and your advisor. Lastly, Fall Rally is around the corner. HEY KEY CLUBBERS!

Hey Editors of CNH!

Another Key Club year is coming off to a great start! The website looks outstanding! The service that occurs throughout our district is shown off through the slideshow, the district newsletter continues to look amazing, and we continue to raise money for PTP and other service projects. Let's strive towards our Governor's goal of 750,000 service hours and $100,000 dollars for PTP. With the slideshow, if you see yourself in a picture, you can show it off to your friends and be like, "oh hey! I'm on the CNH Cyberkey!" By doing so, more people would want to do service to try to get themselves on the slideshow. I also highly encourage writing articles about what goes on in your division. Let's continue to have a great year and I hope to see you at Fall Rally!

Summer is at it's end and fall is now here! Fall? Rally? Fall Rally? Fall Rally is indeed coming up, so please publicize about Fall Rally to all of your members! Fall Rally North will be held at California Great America and Fall Rally South will be held at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Please promote the cheap tickets, the fantastic spirit, and the fun that each and every member will enjoy! Also, starting today, we will be going through the CNH club links and disabling any sites that have been down or have not been updated for a while. To avoid your site from being deleted due to problems, please contact me and we can work something out! Please continue to take wonderful pictures for the slideshow and have a wonderful year!

COMMITTEE REPORTS MEMBER RECOGNITION WORDS FROM THE

MEMBER RECOGNITION CHAIR

Hello Cali-Nev-Ha District!

Now that the first month of school has come and gone, I hope that all of you are now more accustomed with your daily routines and that you are all excited for another terrific year serving your schools. With all the great work you have done an will do, I encourage that you all take a close look at all the contest applications on the CNH Cyberkey. Contests are a great way to get you, your club, and your work recognized. They also help you in setting goals and standards for you club. Don’t miss out! On another note, I would like reinforce how important it is to plan ahead. Although we still have many months until District Convention, I highly encourage that all clubs set up a contest or recognition committee as soon as possible, so that you may decide, as a club, what contests and awards to apply for and who will be in charge of each. Fall is the season of Fall Rally, Key Leader, Regional Training Conferences, college applications, and standardized testing (for many of you) so it is crucial that we all keep on track amidst these busy times. Have fun and good luck!

COMMITTEEDISTRICT INSERTS PROJECTS WORDS ABOUT

TRICK OR TREAT FOR UNICEF HELLO KEY CLUBBERS!

WHICH FIGURE ARE YOU?

Summer is over and school has begun again! There is no better way to start off the new school year than to host an awesome service project :). As we all know, one of the most widely-held Key Club fundraisers in October is Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF first began over 60 years ago and continues to BEE one of the largest UNICEF projects. To date, it has raised over $160 million to provide safer drinking water, medical supplies, education, emergency relief, and many other necessities to support children in 150+ countries around the world. Key Clubbers have raised $5 million since we first began participating in 1994. Currently, a majority of the money raised from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF funds Operation Uruguay, an initiative to help Uruguayan children combat poverty to have a brighter future. More information on Project Uruguay can be found on the Key Club International Cyberkey. So how can you help? Don’t just sit around during Halloween! You can go around your local neighborhood and ask for some loose change instead of candy; ANY amount helps – just go for it! If you want a few of the signature Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes, order them for free by calling 1-800-FOR-KIDS or going to the UNICEF website at unicefusa.org/trickortreat. If you feel like you’re too old to Trick-or-Treat, you can still host a Halloween party or dance! You can even get your parents involved by asking them to place a UNICEF box in or around their workplaces. There are countless ways to participate – if you want to learn more about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF or if you want more project ideas, visit unicefusa.org/trickortreat. So instead of sitting around this Halloween, go out and make a difference in the lives of children by Trickor-Treating for UNICEF!

ROBERT PECK INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE

HEY BEES! As the new school year begins, I ask that you take a moment of your time to read about the Key Club International Service Initiative, Live 2 Learn. Live 2 Learn is the Key Club Service Initiative. Key Club encourages members to devote their hands-on service to a single area of need so that they can have the greatest possible impact. The service initiative is a tool for this purpose: by focusing service on Live-2-Learn-based goals, Key Clubbers can make leaps and bounds towards change in that direction. Live 2 Learn focuses on helping children ages five to nine overcome learning obstacles. To accomplish this, Key Clubbers are encouraged to work with primary school children in three main areas of focus. The first area is improving grades. Projects like peer tutoring or reading programs sponsored by Key Clubbers work really well with that focus area. For example, one big project that clubs often do with this area of focus is Read and Lead, which is a peer mentoring program where Key Club mentors read books one-on-one with a younger reading partner, which is pretty cool. The second focus area, giving back, involves, as the name suggests, helping elementary students give back to their communities. This means creating service projects with which younger kids can get involved, so working on joint projects with your local K-Kids club or inviting students to help with one of your other service projects are excellent ways to work with that focus area. The last focus area is growing together. This area highlights the need for personal and social development, so social activities like play performances and arts and crafts work well here because they let students interact with each other and grow together. There are many, many projects that work with Live 2 Learn. Basically, anything Key Club does that involves working with elementary school kids in some way supports the service initiative. And because school is just starting again, now is definitely the time to start working on a project with Live 2 Learn. Getting started now will lay a strong foundation for your project to build upon for the rest of the school year. Basically, the sooner a project starts the more good it will have time to do! Thanks for reading this : ) I hope that you have a great start to your school year and a great September! Best regards,

Robert Peck Key Club International Trustee

QUESTIONS

WELCOMING SPEAKER At convention, you will be welcomed by a Disneyland Ambassador!

GOVERNOR’S BALL DJ After careful review of several DJ options, the Convention Committee has selected Atmosphere Entertainment to bear the responsibility of having all Key Clubbers buzz the night away at DCON’s Governor’s Ball.

RIBBONS SURVEY

This month on the CyberKey, there will be a survey regarding District Convention ribbons. Please cast your votes on which ribbons you will like to see most!

SUGGESTIONS

Do you have a question regarding District Convention that needs clarification? Is there something you would like to see something changed at DCON that could enhance the convention? Or do you have an idea that could possibly spark up the convention? Member input is very important to the DCON committee, so please don’t hesitate to contact us! (Information below)

of the month

For Key Clubbers Q: I‟m confused. Is District Convention all about club pride or divisional pride?

A: District Convention is designed to recognize the individual clubs and members. One such example is the spirit stick, which is awarded the loudest and most spirited club, not division. During convention, some divisions might wear similar attire or cheer together, but remember - the focus is on club spirit, not division spirit. For Advisors Q: As an adult attending convention, do I need to complete a background check?

A: Any adult attending convention as an advisor or chaperone must be AT LEAST 22 years of age. A background check is required of all adults attending convention regardless of when they are registered. While the background checks are currently good for two years, we recommend submitting the form each year to be covered. The background check form will be posted on the cyberkey, along with all the registration forms, in the next few months. If you have any further questions regarding background checks, please contact Mr. Bruce Hennings at the District Office.
