All Saints Church News Dear Friends, There are many celebrity chefs these days. Some of them are inspiring and others a little nauseating. Last week it was the turn of “The Hairy Bikers”; two men who, ride motorbikes and produce a variety of meals. But not only that, in their current series, they explore different themes and visit places across this country.

The theme this week was Cheese and two of those were Somerset Brie and Cheddar made in Somerset.

Traditionally cheese could only be called Cheddar if it was made within 30 miles of Wells cathedral. But Cheddar has become a generic name for a yellow slab of a variety of flavours of cheese from mild to extra mature and it rarely comes from Somerset. The cheese maker they featured was Jamie Montgomery who is a third generation cheese maker from North Cadbury near Yeovil. Up until the Second World War this kind of Cheddar was produced on many farms. There was no Milk Marketing Board and no tankers to collect the surplus milk. The farmer’s wife would make cheese and butter in the kitchen to use up the milk and sell it. However in WW2 the government stopped this and this local industry never really recovered. Montgomery cheddar is one of the exceptions.

The big companies who make cheese pasteurise the milk – so that they have a uniform taste and uniform looking product.

Montgomery Cheddar is unpasteurised so each batch depends on the circumstances at the time. Which cow, what grass, the water and many other unknown factors? Each cheese is different and each cheese has been on a journey. The way it is made creates a special texture – the way the curd is cut and shredded means it has a distinctive grain it is then matured for 12 to 18 months in cloth bindings so it can breathe.

The cheese produced for our supermarkets is dictated by the market just as tomatoes and apples – pears and potatoes have to be certain shape and size determined by the supermarket.

This process is a metaphor for our Christian faith. We could all be “pasteurised” and believe in exactly the same thing, have the same service every week with a clone of a priest or minister leading it. There might be advantages – as there are some with mass produced cheese. BUT where would the texture be, where would the space be for the diversity which touches a wide variety of people, where would the room be for our life experiences to reflect our faith in many different ways to many different people. We are blessed in these communities to share our worship not only with those who prefer different types of services but those who believe in different doctrines. May God help us to see the richness in our diversity and relish the blessing of debate and differing perspectives? But most of all, may we listen to one another and taste the richness of that scriptural “cheddar” and hear Christ speak to us through each other and the bible.
