Ashbury College acknowledges its campus is located on the traditional, unceded territory of the Anishinàbe Omàmìwininì Algonquin Nation whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial. We recognize the Anishinàbe Omàmìwininì Algonquin Nation as the traditional keepers and stewards of the Ottawa River Watershed and its tributaries. We honour their long history and ongoing protection of this land and their role in caring for this beautiful territory.

This Land Acknowledgement was developed by Ashbury College in partnership with Ashburians from the Kitigan Zibi Community (Misko McGregor ’17 and Family), the former Kitigan Zibi Director of Education (Anita Tenasco) as well as liaison with partners at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. The Kitigan Zibi Band Council will review and approve this statement annually.

Message from Norman Southward Head of School

The 2023-2024 school year closed with students progressing well in both academics and full campus life. The Class of 2024 distinguished themselves with impressive university placements that aligned with their interests and passion for continued learning. The support of our faculty and staff has once again been the key to inspiring students meeting their potential. Congratulations to our graduates and thank you to the Ashbury staff on a successful school year!

Our strategic plan’s fifth year advanced our pillars of teaching and learning, whole student development, access and inclusion, community engagement, and stewarding our resources for the future. We are at an important juncture for the school as we manage enrollment pressure and expanded programmes and opportunities for strategic renewal abound. That said, our focus on academics, a full school experience of athletics, arts, and international engagement, remain distinguishing features to preserve as time comes to renew our priorities.

The support of the Ashbury community remains strong for fundraising initiatives, and our alumni network is as engaged as ever. Gratitude is extended to the Board, Foundation, Parents’ Guild, and Alumni Associations for all of their volunteer work in supporting the Ashbury experiences.

Je souhaite adresser mes remerciements à tous nos partenaires pour une autre année exceptionnelle.

Thank you – Merci – Migwech.

Respectfully submitted,

Message from Dr. Melissa Forgie Chair, Ashbury College Board of Governors

To our graduating students, on behalf of the Board of Governors, please accept our heartfelt congratulations on receiving your diploma. We all know what a tremendous amount of work went into getting to today. Equally, we must acknowledge the work and contribution your family, friends, teachers, and all the Ashbury staff have made.

Armed with all the resilience you have built through the pandemic, particularly completing most of the challenging Grade 9 year and then most of Grade 10 online and the outstanding experiences and education you received at Ashbury College, you are ready to be the leaders we need in a world that is in so much turmoil. Further, as AI continues to become part of our day-to-day reality, we wi ll be looking to you to help us navigate how it impacts how we do things and interact with each other. Remember, AI is intelligence designed by humans and demonstrated by machines. Drawing on ethical principles for AI, we are counting on you to be transparent and accountable and to treat all humans equally. C’est maintenant à vous de prendre la relève. Je suis convaincue que vous sere z tous à la hauteur.

Throughout the year, we have seen remarkable growth and achievements in several key areas for the Ashbury College community, which are focused on Academic Excellence, Community Engagement, and Commitment to Pluralism. We have also considered what opportunities will stand out for Ashbury’s future.

None of these accomplishments outlined in this report would be possible without the tireless dedication of our faculty and staf f, the enthusiasm of our students, and the support and partnership of our parents, alumni, and friends of the school. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all of you for your continued commitment to our school's success.

Message from Hugh Scott ’88 Chair, Ashbury College Foundation Board

As Chair of the Foundation Board at Ashbury College, I’m delighted to share an update with you. Ashbury’s mission — to inspire students as intellectually curious, compassionate, and responsible global citizens — guides everything we do as a school, a non-profit organization, and a registered Canadian charity.

I’d like to take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation to our generous community of donors, volunteers, and sponsors. Your ongoing support and belief in the power of education have been vital in shaping the experiences of our students and fueling their potential.

As of June 30, 2024, Ashbury College’s Endowment reached a year-end value of $17 million. The Foundation Board carefully manages this fund, ensuring a well-diversified portfolio that shields against market volatility. Ashbury College provides need-based financial assistance to over 13% of Ashbury’s students, increased from 7% when I joined the Foundation Board in 2016. The average bursary amount is 50% of fees, with additional support available to fund experiences in athletics, arts, leadership, service, and international opportunities. All students enrolled at Ashbury should have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and create lasting and impactful core memories.

I’d like to close by extending my sincere thanks once again. Your unwavering dedication to Ashbury’s mission is making a difference in the lives of our students and the broader community.

Ashbury College’s Pluralism Project

Ashbury’s commitment to fostering inclusivity, embracing pluralism, and condemning all forms of racism and discrimination continues. Ashbury’s Pluralism Project has been in place for four years; the group represents a collective effort involving over 80 students, staff, alumni, parents, and Board members working on five teams focused on various aspects of school life. This work is part of a continuum of dialogue and improvement that builds on Ashbury’s strategic goal of creating an inclusive school community.

Pluralism recommendations advanced over the 2023/24 school year:

• Updating of wall spaces and creation of a student art gallery

• Ongoing pluralism professional development for staff

• Continued focus on baseline pluralism education for the community

• Increased student membership in Pluralism Circle

• More all-gender change rooms

• Focused effort on storytelling in Ashbury News

Lisa Lewicki, Ashbury’s Pluralism Co-Chair, obtained her Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIP) qualifications. We are very proud to have a staff member with this certification. Lisa joins a long list of Certified Inclusion professionals from many different areas of expertise, but she is the first representative from an independent school.
