The Delphi method

The Delphi method takes its name from the Greek city of Delphi, the seat of a famous oracle. It is a technique for evaluation research based on expert judgement, and characterized by a remote interaction between the subjects involved, which is mediated by the researcher.

Operational tools 24

The Delphi technique

It is used as an evaluative support to the decision-making process, in those situations where there is «a lack of agreement or an incomplete knowledge of the nature of the problem, or of the components that need to be considered for a winning solution. The judgements made by the heterogeneous group must blend, to invent or discover a satisfactory course of action».

Operational tools 25

The Delphi technique

The main goal is the investigation of creative and reliable ideas, as well as the processing of information useful to the decision-making process. Its implementation allows for new insights, and for the assessment of the desirability and feasibility of possible alternatives, thus contributing to the resolution of a problem and to an informed decision-making process.
