It’s about two months since our 37th annual meeting, held for the first time this year on the West Coast, at the Bahia Resort in San Diego. It was by all measures a success – the venue, the science & presentations, the short course just prior to the meeting, the mingling and networking. An especially hard winter in North America made San Diego even more attractive than it would normally have been! The turnout was very good – we counted 220 attendees – the sessions were informative and lively, and no one seemed to mind the short sunny walk back and forth between the rather quaint presentation venue on the boat and the more staid one on the fifth floor on hard land. The plenary talks each morning were all excellent and got each day going on the right foot. The meeting had a nice mix of its well-established sessions (Soft Materials, Structural Adhesives, Contact Mechanics, etc.) and the relatively new (Bioinspired Adhesives, Natural Adhesion, etc.)

The Society remembered and bid fond farewell to its founding member and first President, and unarguably its most illustrious, creative, and influential scientist, Alan Gent, in a special session organized by Chuck Extrand and Tony Kinloch. A brief remembrance of Alan Gent and description of the session held in his memory is included below.

Among the most important events at each Annual Meeting are the awards and recognition, which we will highlight in this issue. I am particularly fond of the Peebles Award Session (sponsored by Henkel) for the enthusiasm of the speakers and the quality of the talks – this year was no exception. We are very happy to announce that the 2015 winner of the Adhesion Society Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science (sponsored by 3M) will be Professor Kenneth Liechti, the Zarrow Centennial Professor in Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. Ken is being recognized for fundamental contributions to our understanding of crack propagation at material interfaces and we look forward to the award session to be held in his honor at the next Annual Meeting in Savannah, Georgia being held February 20-25, 2015.

I would like to end by mentioning the role played by members of the Adhesion Society Executive Committee, all of whom volunteer their time for the benefit of the Society. In addition, we are fortunate to have a dedicated core of members for whom the Society is a professional and intellectual home, and who have and continue to contribute to its well-being. In particular, I would like to recognize the great efforts and contributions of Professor Kenneth Shull of Northwestern University, who just stepped down as President (and whose shoes I am finding rather large to fill!)

The Alan N. Gent Memorial Session The ‘Memorial Session’ for Alan took place at the 37th Annual Meeting of The Adhesion Society, February 2014 held in San Diego, California. The Session was held on the Bahia Belle Sternwheeler which was moored in the adjacent bay to the conference hotel - we all thought that Alan would have smiled at the chosen location.

The Session was organized and chaired by Chuck Extrand (Entegris, USA) and Tony Kinloch (Imperial College London), who were both former PhD students of Alan.

They both discussed their early work and their published papers with Alan, which had led to many subsequent discoveries.

Two other former PhD students of Alan, Gary Hamed (University of Akron, USA) and Kilwon Cho (Pohang University, Korea), also spoke about the major influence that Alan had upon their research activities. Indeed, a theme from all his former PhD students was the way that Alan encouraged them to follow their own research ideas - but with a strong degree of self-criticism of the results and with a very down-to-earth and common sense attitude to ensuring that the results could be explained by a theory - and ideally a simple theory that did not need a computer program for validation.

Don Hunston (NIST, USA) and Anand Jagota (Lehigh University and formerly of DuPont, USA) completed the session with two presentations that had been influenced by the input of Alan Gent. They emphasized the willingness of Alan to give freely of his time and intellect to help other scientists with their research activities.

All the speakers in the session told many stories of Alan and his dry sense of humor, which often landed him into trouble with his colleagues and with his research sponsors. But, of course, he was always forgiven. His love of science, his support for his former PhD students and warmth for his fellowscientists - as well as his tremendous and sharp intellect - led to him to be very highly regarded and very much admired by everyone with whom he interacted.

We shall not see his like again!

Annual Meeting Awards and Awardees

2015 and 2014 Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science The Adhesion Society’s Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science, sponsored by 3M, is the Society’s premier award for outstanding achievements in scientific research relating to adhesion. The criteria for winning this award include a scientific contribution that has significantly improved our understanding of the phenomenon of adhesion, or a contribution to the technology of adhesion or adhesives that has had significant impact on the adhesion and adhesives industry, and a world-wide recognition of that achievement. The award has been given annually since 1987.

We are very pleased to announce that the 2015 winner of the Adhesion Society Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science will be Professor Kenneth Liechti, the Zarrow Centennial Professor in Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. Ken is being recognized for fundamental contributions to our understanding of crack propagation at material interfaces. In a series of papers published during the 1990’s, Ken carefully quantified how interfacial toughness depends on the mode mixity of the loading – that is on the mix of crack-tip opening versus crack-tip shearing deformation. In more recent work, Ken has used a unique combination of interfacial force microscope measurements and molecular dynamic simulations to understand the mechanical response of molecular-scale coatings and the fundamental relationship between adhesion and interfacial fracture. We look forward to the award session in his honor in 2015.

At our last Annual Meeting, David Yarusso, 3M Company, presented the 2014 Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science to our President, Professor Anand Jagota, Lehigh University, for “excellence in the application of physics and chemistry methodologies to fundamental and applied research in adhesion science.

Presentation of the award was followed by a symposium in Anand’s honor that included talks from Roland Bennewitz (INM-Leibniz-Institute fur Neue Materialien) on “Adhesion and Friction at the Nanometer Scale”, Shu Yang (University of Pennsylvania) on “Strong Dry Adhesion via Mechanical Interlocking of Structured Polymers”, Ming Zheng (NIST) on “A DNA-based Approach to the Carbon Nanotube Sorting Problem” and Eric Dufresne (Yale University) on “Wetting and Adhesion on Soft Surfaces.”

2014 Peebles Awards and the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award Two types of student awards are given every year, the Peebles Award for Graduate Student Research in Adhesion Science and the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award.

Both awards are sponsored

by Henkel. Any student who is past the first year of graduate study enrolled in graduate school at the time of the annual meeting and who has not received a student award previously is eligible to compete.

Annual Meeting Awards and Awardees This year we had seven recipients of the Peebles Award for Graduate Student Research in Adhesion Science. The selection of awardees was based on abstracts submitted as contributions to the Annual Meeting. These awardees received partial support to attend the meeting and present their papers at an oral symposium. These presentations formed the basis for choosing the winner of the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award. In addition to this support, registration fees for the short course and the meeting were waived.

The winners of the 2014 Peebles Awards were Daniel King (University of Massachusetts), Alyssa Start (University of Akron), Keren Zhang (Virginia Tech), Huang Ming Chong (Imperial College, London), Priyal Shah (Virginia Tech), Subrata Mondal (IIT Kanpur), and Zhiyi Cao (University of Texas).

Charles Paul (Henkel), and Anand Jagota (Lehigh University), presented Keren Zhang (Virginia Tech), with the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award. Alyssa Start (University of Akron) was the runner-up. Ms. Zhang’s paper title was “Nucleobase-Containing Acrylic Block Copolymers for Supramolecular Hot Melt Adhesives.” Ms. Start spoke on “The Effect of Surface Wettability and Wetting on the Gecko Adhesive System.” Both were awarded a cash prize each in addition to the remuneration associated with being a Peebles Award winner.

The 2014 Distinguished Paper Award The 2014 Distinguished Paper Award was established in 1999 and was supported until 2005 by the H. B. Fuller Company as a tribute to Rolf Schubert, former VicePresident of Research and Development and Chief Technology Officer for the H.B. Fuller Company.

In 2006, National Starch and Chemical Company began the support of this award. It is now sponsored by Henkel. One paper presented at the annual meeting of the Adhesion Society is selected each year to receive this award. The selection process is coordinated by the Vice President of the Adhesion Society. Christopher Wohl, from Nasa Langley Research Center, received the 2014 Adhesion Society Distinguished Paper Award for the paper “Novel Epoxy Particulate Composites for Mitigation of Insect Residue Adhesion on Future Aircraft Surfaces” presented at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society. In his paper, research findings regarding the generation and evaluation of epoxy particulate composite coatings for mitigation of insect residue adhesion were presented. These coatings were developed in support of the Environmentally Responsible Aviation project towards maintenance of laminar flow on future aircraft wing surfaces. Evaluation of the coatings was performed using a pneumatic insect delivery device followed by topographical determination of insect residue height and areal coverage using optical profilometry. Controlled modification of surface chemistry, via surface modifying agents, along with topographical modification with inorganic particulate fillers reduced the accreted insect residue height and areal coverage by 50% and 80%, respectively, relative to an unmodified aluminum surface. Young Scientist Award The Adhesion Society Young Scientist Award recognizes a young scientist for conducting outstanding and fundamental research in adhesion science.

The nominee shall not have reached his/her 36th birthday prior to January 1 of the year in which the award is presented, and he/she is expected to deliver an oral presentation at the annual meeting at which the award is conferred. Also, nominees of any nationality are eligible and need not be a member of the Adhesion Society.

Matt Croson, President of the Adhesive and Sealant Council, congratulates Rong Long (University of Alberta) for being awarded the 2014 Adhesion Society Young Scientist Award, sponsored by the ASC, for his development and application of computational methods for understanding the mechanics of soft materials.

The Best Poster Award Since 1977, The Adhesion Society has provided a forum to bring together in a single group all of the disciplines which relate to the science of adhesion. The Society fosters communication between researchers in mechanics, synthetic chemistry, surface science, polymer physics, material science, and biology. With members drawn almost equally from industry and academia, it also encourages the exchange of problems and solutions between those who share common scientific interests. The poster session is an integral part of the Society’s annual meeting. With the short time available for each oral presentation, the poster session provides an excellent forum for more extended discussion of technical issues and interrelationships.

2014 Robert L. Patrick Fellowship Award Elevation of a member to Fellow of the Society is a formal recognition of outstanding members. The award also commemorates the lifelong contributions made to the Adhesion community by the late Robert L. Patrick. Timothy E. Long, Virginia Tech, received the 2014 Robert L. Patrick Fellowship Award from Ken Shull, President of The Adhesion Society, “for his unique ability to create novel polymers of significant importance and enthusiastically convey polymer and adhesion science fundamentals.”
