We honor the life and spirit of L. Murphy, a longstanding and beloved member of the ASCNYC creative writing workshop. L. passed away in 2013, but his fiercely honest poetry, sly sense of humor, and riveting performances at our many readings and IN MEMORIAM: events over the years will never be forgotten. We are honored to share with you one of L.’s last poems, published here for the first time.

L. Murphy (1964 -2013)

THE DEVIL’S WEB AND FIGHTING TO GET FREE Caught up, Trying to move! Letting go! What else to prove? Serving faith, spiritually. Knocking on Heaven’s Gate to be chosen, But scared of not being chosen. For the sins committed… Caught up in the Devil’s web, fighting to get free. Expressing myself selflessly— Not to mock My very existence, But to forgive the angry sinner Buried deep within me. Pulling, pushing, yelling to be heard, To myself be true. Release me from the chains Of the webs that bind my Soul tightly between Heaven and Hell, Whose forces collide together Already knowing where I’ll go and who to choose. For my thoughts are with the Only choice I have: To free myself from the Devil’s web. Fighting to get free is the only thing I know. Burn the web of destruction that’s inside of me So I can live, Breathe, Love for eternity.
