More people attend baseball games than any other sport in the USA.
Reporter: Tell me, guys, why do Americans love baseball so much? Carol: I think it is because everybody can play baseball. Boys and girls can play on the same team, even. In baseball, you can be small or tall, skinny or heavy, because there are so many different positions. If you aren’t good at hitting the ball, you may be great at pitching it and getting people out. Carol: If you can’t hit, pitch or field, you might be super at running. Reporter: What is a baseball field like? Jason: Ballparks are built around a diamond shape with four bases. Reporter: What kind of equipment do you need to play baseball? Carol: Basic equipment is a baseball bat and a ball. Different positions need leather gloves for catching the ball. You need a helmet to protect yourself from injury. Jason: Players usually wear special baseball shoes called cleats. These have spikes all the way to the toes. Catchers standing behind the batsman also need extra padding and a mask to protect themselves. Reporter: Are the rules difficult to understand? Jason: No, they’re very simple. Each team gets the same number of turns batting and fielding. The team with the most runs wins. Reporter: When do people play baseball? Carol: From spring until fall. Reporter: What do you enjoy most about baseball? Jason: Sitting in the ballpark watching my favourite team, eating hot dogs and just relaxing. Carol: Singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” with everybody. This is a popular song at the games.
