We read factual texts to find information. We write them to give information to other people.
We research the topic using books, the internet or other reliable sources. We plan and organize ideas and information. We can use a mind map, key words or notes.

California Location California is a state in the southwest of the USA. It has the largest state population in the USA. It is the third largest state in size and borders the Pacific Ocean. The Flag
The flag is called The Bear Flag. It shows a brown grizzly bear walking on grass towards a red five-pointed star. The bear stands for strength, and the star represents power and independence. The red colour means courage and the white background is for purity. Many years ago, there were grizzly bears in California. The bear on the flag actually has a name: Monarch.

The state motto
The state motto is “Eureka, I have found it!” Some of the states use Latin or English in their mottos. California is the only state that uses Greek. Eureka is a famous phrase used by an ancient Greek mathematician, Archimedes. The phrase “I have found it” refers to when a miner found gold in 1848 which led to the greatest gold rush in the USA. Famous places and landmarks Tourists think of California as a place to surf, go to the beach and relax, but there are many other things to see and do there. The state has the world’s first theme park: Disneyland. Not only does the state have many beautiful and famous beaches, but it also has nine national parks, the most in the country. In some of these you can see California redwoods, the tallest trees on earth. The world’s largest movie industry is in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
