Each year, we produce the report you are currently reading, to inform all members of the Ascension community – current parents, past parents, alumni, employees, and friends of the school – of the philanthropic efforts and results from the previous school year. As you will read in the pages ahead, the fundraising results from the 20202021 school year are quite extraordinary; however, this document contains a much more powerful message than the dollars donated and raised. The generosity of our donors continues to make it possible for our community to advance the mission of Ascension. Our benefactors are a powerful testimony to how much can be accomplished when people selflessly and sacrificially join together for a common purpose. The Ascension story is humbling and fills our hearts with overwhelming gratitude.
I specifically want to thank Board members Ross Woodring, Stacie Belle, and Aubrey Braithwaite for their service on the Advancement Committee. I also wish to thank Missy Cormier, Lindsay Finley, and Katherine Freeman for leading our three parent support organizations. Katherine McCormick, Marilyn Lee, Rachel Delcambre and Stephanie Ortego served the school in various capacities through the Advancement Office, and we are thankful for their tireless efforts. The board and administration continue in their commitment to operating the school while striving to be the absolute best stewards of the resources entrusted to them.
While much of the Ascension story is still to be written, and we believe that our school is still God’s work in progress, we will continue to seek His guidance as we strive to make the Ascension experience better for students and families. As you read this report, you will see the names of those who have played a role in the Ascension Fund, the Ascension PTO, the Ascension Fine Arts Alliance, and the Ascension Booster Club. All gifts, regardless of the amount, are valued, appreciated, and celebrated by the school and its constituents. However, as we celebrate the wonderful results from the past year, let us never lose sight of why we work so hard to raise those dollars: to create a school environment in which the lives of children will be forever changed, all for the glory of God and the furthering of His Kingdom.
God Bless,
THE BLESSINGS OUR THREE CHILDREN HAVE RECEIVED FROM THEIR ASCENSION EDUCATION HAVE BEEN MANY – FROM ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS TO LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND A FAITH-BASED COMMUNITY. ANNUAL GIVING HAS ALWAYS PROVIDED THE EXTRAS THAT MAKE ASCENSION THE SPECIAL PLACE WE ALL LOVE.
SIXTY PLUS YEARS AGO, PARENTS LIKE US BELIEVED IN JEANETTE PARKER’S VISION FOR ASCENSION, THEY GAVE AND LOOK WHERE WE ARE TODAY.
— Lea Ann and Mike Remondet, Parents of Anna ‘13, Michael ‘18, and Matthew ‘21
In January, nine upper school students participated in Parish Proud's "New Year, New Parish Cleanup" in downtown Lafayette. Our students joined hundreds of volunteers in beautifying the community through trash and debris pickup. Ascension students cleaned along University Avenue as well as the downtown campus and its surrounding neighborhood.
In August, Hurricane Laura struck Lake Charles as a category five hurricane. Many of our Ascension students had family or friends who were affected by the natural disaster, which prompted Andre Domengeaux, senior and Athletics Prefect, to initiate a school supply drive to support a local nonprofit organization, Lane’s Promise.
Teachers, students, and parents rallied together to provide hundreds of pounds of goods to our neighboring community.
For the first time in school history, Ascension’s middle school Student Council has been recognized as a 2021 National Gold Council of Excellence. The National Student Council states, “Winning the National Gold Council of Excellence Award is a testament to the highest standards of quality that your council consistently demonstrates in its operation, and its projects and activities. NatStuCo Gold Councils of Excellence are the models of quality for which other student councils should strive to become."
Student Council leader Heather Gros is in awe of all her council has accomplished despite the pandemic, COVID restrictions, and challenges. “This year’s council has gone above and beyond! The 2020 pandemic didn’t slow them down! It actually inspired them to do more to reach and connect our Blue Gator family. Studentinitiated Christmas gift shop, candy grams, scarves for Second Harvest Food Bank, donations for Safe Haven Animal Rescue, livestreamed morning announcements, pre-recorded pep rallies, and news reports are only a few ways our student leaders continue #empoweringLeadersWithLove. Their positive attitude, school and community spirit, worth ethic, drive, and determination give me hope for
the future. I am so blessed to work beside these student leaders. They inspire me every day!”
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STUDENT LEADERS AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE AT ASCENSION!
Led by the Student Council secretary, Lily Sheets, our Downtown Campus students donated 136 pounds of food and generated 163 meals for Second Harvest, a local food pantry. With matching donations, they provided 1,313 meals to those in need in the local community!
“I was inspired by people who don’t have enough food. I wanted to help provide meals for families in Lafayette,” says Lily.
After reviewing the design/ engineering process and the diverse needs of our downtown community, 3rd and 4th grade Innovation and Technology students designed the ideal playground for Parc Sans Souci. Our safe searchers used the internet to explore ideas in their brainstorming, drew detailed and colorful blueprints, shared their big ideas, offered one another feedback to improve their designs, and submitted their final plans to The United Way of Acadiana in honor of SOLA Giving Day.
As a four time award-winning Apple Distinguished School, it is our mission to establish an innovative, collaborative learning environment which fosters empowered lifelong learners, creative problem solvers, and critical thinkers. As adaptable technology-users, it is our goal for students and teachers to responsibly communicate and contribute their God-given talents globally.
In keeping with the call to live like Jesus, as well as living out part of Ascension's mission, "fostering servant leadership opportunities that positively shape character," the smallest Blue Gators on our River Ranch campus celebrated their second year of collecting items for the DesOrmeaux Foundation. Donations were accepted for three weeks during the Advent Season and were given to support babies and new moms in need. Items donated by our generous RR families included diapers, baby wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, infant bottles, pacifiers, Lysol, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid or pods, and grocery gift cards.
Thank you to all who donated and for modeling servant leadership to our children!
AT THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, WE REALIZED WE NEEDED AN EXTRA PLAY SPACE FOR PK3 STUDENTS DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS. THANKS TO ANNUAL GIVING, WE GOT TO PURCHASE SOME NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT. IT’S THESE KIND OF “EXTRAS” THAT MAKE OUR KIDS WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL HERE AT ASCENSION.
— Julie Bourque, River Ranch Campus Director, Parent of Grace ‘18If you haven’t heard of Lafayette’s newest obsession, Caroline’s Cookies, then you must be living under a rock! Caroline’s Cookies was created by our very own Blue Gator Alum, Caroline Merryman (‘20).
hoW did YoU GeT STArTed?
I’ve been baking since I was around 10 years old, but during quarantine, I started baking cookies all the time and would give them to my friends. In September of 2020, I decided to make an Instagram to post pictures that my brother had taken of my cookies and impulsively decided to sell them, too!! It’s really just grown from there.
WhAT WAS The hArdeST pArT oF STArTiNG A BUSiNeSS?
I think that the hardest part of starting was finding confidence in myself and my product. I really was doubtful and honestly scared of what people would think. So, every time I get positive feedback or a repeat customer it’s the most rewarding feeling.
WheN did YoUr loVe For BAKiNG STArT?
I started baking when I was around 10 years old; starting in 7th grade, I started bringing different baked goods to school to give to my friends. No one in my family baked but I am obsessed with anything sugar so I loved it.
WhAT iS YoUr FAVoriTe ThiNG ABoUT rUNNiNG YoUr oWN BUSiNeSS?
My favorite thing about running a business is probably getting to see my customers so excited to get their cookies. It’s a really good feeling when I see my hard work paying off!

ASCENSION IS A GREAT PLACE TO SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL - A GREAT PLACE FOR THEM TO GROW UP – AND IT’S A GREAT PLACE TO WORK! WE ARE DOING REALLY AMAZING THINGS IN THE CLASSROOMS AND I EXPERIENCE FIRSTHAND HOW THE CONTRIBUTIONS TO ANNUAL GIVING SUPPORT US IN OUR MISSION.
— Kim St. Germain, teacher and Ascension parentTuition dollars don’t cover everything it takes to create this special Ascension community for our children. The dollars that you give to annual giving, along with support from our PSOs, make up that difference. Your contributions are crucial to sustain our educational programming, retain our exceptional faculty, and safely educate in-person during the pandemic.
On behalf of Ascension’s Board of Directors, Administrative Team, Teachers, Staff, and Students, thank you for continuing to support our school in so many generous ways!

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) provides volunteer hours and financial support, which significantly impacts Ascension. All families are automatically part of our PTO as PTO dues are included in tuition. Each year, Ascension’s PTO supports community-building events such as picnics, parties, and faculty appreciation week. Examples of recent PTO fundraisers include galas, fall festivals, online silent auction, t-shirt sales, and a $10,000 cash raffle. The fundraiser efforts go toward one schoolwide project or one project per campus as determined by campus administration.

ANNUAL GIVING CROSSES ALL FACETS OF OUR SCHOOL. AS THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, I’VE SEEN FIRSTHAND HOW IT SUPPORTS AND CELEBRATES THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR STUDENT ATHLETES. FROM SIGNING DAY CELEBRATIONS TO CHAMPIONSHIP BANNERS AND STATE RINGS - TO CALCO BUS RIDES, ASCENSION’S ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN ENABLES US TO PROVIDE THE EXTRAS THAT MAKE ASCENSION…ASCENSION!
— Eric Mouton, Athletic Director, Parents of Eli ‘18 and Annie ‘21
Charlie Mahana’s curiosity and love of learning led him to complete eleven AP courses, to study general relativity, quantum mechanics, and quantum physics and, relatedly, the mathematics that support those avenues of study. He was the Valedictorian for the Class of 2021 and went on to attend The Univesity of Texas at Dallas majoring in Computer Science.
For all of his academic brilliance, Charlie is also well-rounded. He was a member of our Varsity boys' soccer team, the co-founder of our Astronomy Club, a member of our awardwinning choir, and a guitarist in our Rock Band. He has performed in countless school concerts and choral performances.
An athlete, an artist, and an astronomer, Charlie Mahana is a true Renaissance man. Moreover, he is a brilliant young scientist with integrity and a conscience.
We are so proud of this Blue Gator for being named a 2020-21 National Merit Scholar!
André Domengeaux was named state winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution Louisiana State Good Citizens Essay Contest after submitting letters of recommendation, transcripts, and an essay demonstrating the qualities of a good citizen through dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
With stellar recommendations from his teachers and counselors, André was an outstanding student and mentor to his peers. Throughout his high school career, André sustained a cumulative GPA of 4.0. He was a member of the varsity football team, varsity track team, National Honor Society, and is currently attending LSU in the Honors College.
In April, the entire school came together to celebrate Chris Dardar and his many years of dedication to the students of Ascension Episcopal School. Chris came to Ascension in 2005 from New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and served our school in many positions - including teacher, coach, facilities manager, admissions director, dean of students (middle school and high school), head of upper school, and any other job that needed to be done! The entire school community was the recipient of his New Orleans roots in the form of food - as he could often be found frying turkeys for the Thanksgiving feast, barbequing at Homecoming, cooking gumbo for drive-in movie nights and jambalaya for many, many events!
In appreciation for his many years of dedication, a tree will be planted and dedicated at the Sugar Mill Pond Campus to honor his legacy.
In addition to feeding us and leading us, Chris was instrumental in continuing the Ascension tradition of service - especially during the Flood of 2016, when he organized students and faculty that were unaffected to help those who were.
ANNUAL GIVING WAS ONE OF THE REASONS WE WERE ABLE TO START – AND STAY IN SCHOOL THIS YEAR – DESPITE COVID RESTRICTIONS. AND THAT IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE OF THE MANY BENEFITS THAT HAPPEN WHEN WE ALL GIVE TO THE ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN.
— Marci Hebert, 2 nd grade teacher, Ascension parent
For Mrs. Daly, excellence in teaching is at the heart of this award, but it is about more than just excellence in the classroom. The best teachers approach their vocation with a servant’s heart, and that is certainly true of this year’s recipient. Being a true servant means helping others, particularly when it is not convenient. It means helping others with absolutely no expectation of, or desire for, public recognition. It is defined by the deflecting of praise to others when recognition does come your way.
It is marked by eagerly helping others with a cheerful smile and a willing heart. It means caring more about getting it right than being right. Genuine service is selfless, anonymous and permeates every part of a person, and true servants are motivated by their character and not by their accolades.
In her four years at Ascension, it is hard to overstate this teacher’s impact on their students and our community. She consistently sets an example for all of us by demonstrating an unyielding pursuit for growth and development. All the while, her life is a reflection of our core values –gentle, generous, truthful, kind, and brave.
The Melinda Mangham Excellence in Teaching Award is given annually in honor of former Ascension administrator, and lifelong educator, Mrs. Melinda Mangham, who passed away in 2020. The purpose of this award is to to recognize one teacher who exhibits the excellence that Melinda championed during her lifetime. Melinda was an educator at heart, and her love of learning and pushing teachers to be their best permeated everything she did. Melinda loved students. Her students, of course, but, honestly, Melinda loved all students. Melinda believed the best way to change the world was through education, and she knew the way to have the greatest impact on education was to mentor and develop teachers. Melinda poured herself into faculty development and, as such, her impact on students across Acadiana will continue for many years to come.
This award is given annually to an Ascension parent(s) who exemplifies the collaborative spirit, commitment to volunteerism, and kindness of Gretchen – all in support of Ascension Episcopal School.
Walker Vincent truly embodied what it means to be gentle, generous, truthful, kind, and brave. In his honor, the Walker Vincent Memorial Scholarship has been established to recognize two members of the Ascension junior class from this year forward, one boy and one girl who “Live Like Walker.”
Congratulations to Pierson Peebles and Gracie Gage as the inaugural Walker Vincent Memorial Scholarship winners.
Established after the passing of Gretchen Vincent and her son, Walker, in 2019, the Gretchen Vincent Service Award and Walker Vincent Memorial Scholaship were created to honor the memories of two Blue Gators that left such a significant impact on our community.

AS PART OF STUDENT LEADERSHIP, WE WORK WITH A YEARLY BUDGET TO PLAN STUDENT ACTIVITIES. WHEN WE HAD TO CHANGE OUR TRADITIONAL HOMECOMING DANCE – DUE TO COVID – TO A SIT DOWN DINNER, WE DIDN’T REALLY KNOW WHERE THE EXTRA FUNDS WOULD COME FROM. BUT THANKS TO ANNUAL GIVING, WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE AN AMAZING HOMECOMING DINNER!
