AUGUST 11, 2022 | MEET THE BLUE GATORS Meet the Blue Gators was a culmination and celebration of our Middle School and Upper School fall athletic teams, our fall senior athletes, our Booster Club, Fine Arts Alliance, and so much more. With our own hype crews on site, we saw performances by middle school, JV, and varsity cheer squads, Gator Jazz, and a debut performance of our middle school dance team: Blue Gator Dance.

AUGUST 24, 2022 | OPENING CONVOCATION When we bring all three campuses together under one roof, it is always a special day. To kick off the school year and thank God for our blessings, students from Kindergarten through 12th grade gathered for our Opening Convocation and Chapel at our Sugar Mill Pond Campus. During the service, our All-School Chaplain, Reverend Jordan Hylden, reflected on the school-year theme of “Together in Christ” - and reminded us that after two years of social distancing, being together this morning was a welcomed blessing. During Chapel, students from each division brought gifts to the altar that represented Balanced Excellence - Academics, Arts, Athletics and Acts of Service - tenants that are close to the heart of all Blue Gators.

Thank You
Your gifts in action Gratitude abounds for our giving tradition. As the school year unfolded, our students reaped the rewards funded by our past PTO Fund-A-Need and South Louisiana Giving Day donations.
Our preschool students delve into color and light experiments investigating the characteristics of their building blocks, natural elements, and artistic endeavors. These tables encourage the development of fine motor skills, foster exploration, and ignite curiosity.

Upper School science lab classrooms received new equipment, lab tables, updated countertops, workspaces, and a portable lab counter, including two new sinks.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2022 | HONOR BOOK CEREMONY At the start of each year, students in grades 1 - 12 attend ceremonies revolving around integrity, honesty, and respect. Upper school students attend the “Honor Book Ceremony” where Ascension students in their first year on that campus, be it as an 8th grade student or senior, sign the Honor Book committing to uphold the school’s honor code. Much the same, our lower and middle school students attend “Honor Chapel” where students sign the honor code promising to be truthful and fair to others each day by acting with kindness, honesty, and respect. We strive to instill our core values of being gentle, generous, truthful, kind and brave in all that we do at Ascension.

NOVEMBER 29, 2022 | GIVING TUESDAY We surpassed our goal to raise a matched $10,000 and ended up tallying $35,110 (including our match) to benefit the Blue Gators walking our halls. Thank you to all the parents, faculty & staff, board members, alumni, alumni parents and friends who donated to the 2022-23 Annual Giving Campaign and on #GivingTuesday in particular. A special thank you to the donor who matched $10,000 of donated dollars. We are beyond grateful for those who chose to invest in Ascension and our mission.

NOVEMBER 10, 2022 | ASCENSION AWARDED APPLE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL DESIGNATION FOR FIFTH TIME
Ascension Episcopal School has been selected as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2022-2025 school years. This is the fifth consecutive time our school has earned this honor. Ascension’s journey with Apple began in 2013 when the school’s parent organization purchased iPads for all faculty and staff. From that moment, the Innovation + Technology program has evolved immensely. Moving from shared carts of iPads to 1:1 devices including access to laptops, we have seen tremendous growth in both teaching and learning. As 1 of only 689 schools in 36 countries holding this distinction, Ascension is at the forefront of innovation and technology in the classroom “to prepare our students to navigate a world and a future we can only imagine, to hold jobs that do not yet exist, and to face challenges that will not emerge for decades.” Again, thank you to Apple and Jana Hart, our Apple Account Executive, for the continued partnership to maintain continuous growth and promote innovation in our classrooms and beyond. As a school, we are grateful and proud of our administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and students for staying at the forefront of innovation and technology. Many thanks to our Innovation + Technology team, our Technology Help Desk interns on the upper school campus, and all the moments in between where we learn new apps, roll out new updates, or attend Lunch & Learns to swap tips, tricks and ideas with fellow teachers.
NOVEMBER 30, 2022 | SOLA GIVING DAY FUNDS MAKING AN IMPACT IN BIOLOGY Students in Biology II spent some time in a lab simulation focused on Biotechnology which is defined as technology that utilizes biological systems, living organisms or parts of this to develop or create different products. Using miniPCR machines purchased with funds raised through #SOLAGivingDay2022, students got hands-on experience with PCR principles and determined if fictional patients were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Thank you to all of our donors — and especially our matching donor — for supporting Annual Giving through #SolaGivingDay!

Blue Gators Give Back "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." GALATIANS 6:9-10
DECEMBER 6, 2022 | NO SHAVE NOVEMBER Several senior boys paid their way to be bearded for No Shave November, but it was more than just being bearded. Spinning the No Shave November into an opportunity to give back to the community, students paid $20 to remain unshaven for the month. After the competition and using their entry fee funds, the boys took a field trip to purchase non-perishable food items for Second Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for caring for the community in the midst of your competitive spirit, Blue Gators!
DECEMBER 6, 2022 | SERVING AT ST. JOSEPH’S DINER These 7th grade Blue Gators rounded out 2022 by volunteering together at St. Joseph’s Diner, where they served free, freshly prepared, nutritious meals to those experiencing homelessness and hunger in our community. We love to see those servant’s hearts in action!

JANUARY 3, 2023 | BLUE GATORS TUNED IN TO WATCH PEYTON WOODRING IN THE UNDER ARMOUR ALLAMERICA GAME ON ESPN
Peyton’s remarkable talent and unwavering dedication earned him this distinguished opportunity, making us immensely proud. Peyton’s journey to the Under Armour All-America Game was punctuated by outstanding achievements, including his recent inclusion in the First Team Offense of the MaxPreps Junior All-America Team. This recognition not only showcased his personal prowess but also underscored his significant contribution to the overall success of the Ascension Episcopal football team. Peyton Woodring had already left an indelible mark in Ascension’s history with a remarkable 56-yard field goal achieved in a standout game against Catholic High. This feat not only secured victory for the team but also solidified Peyton’s place as the record-holder for the longest field goal kick in Ascension’s football legacy. Ascension Episcopal School is incredibly proud of Peyton Woodring and his remarkable journey in the world of high school football. Join us in relishing his standout performance in the Under Armour All-America Game, celebrating the skills and dedication that make him a true standout in the sport. Go Peyton! Go Blue Gators! 15

FEBRUARY 16, 2023 MR. DASGUPTA SELECTED AS UNITED WAY TEACHER AWARD FINALIST Upper school teacher Shome Dasgupta was selected as a finalist in the United Way of Acadiana 2023 Teacher Awards. During an all campus gathering, Shome was called down from the bleachers and presented with this great honor. Accompanied by plenty of applause from students and fellow faculty, it doesn't seem to be much of a shock for him to have earned this recognition. Well done, Mr. Dasgupta! “It was one big blur,” he said in an email. “It is all so very humbling and surreal, and I’m truly grateful and thankful for all of this and for these opportunities.” “Each day is so new and unknown because of the nature of such a profession, and I’m so very lucky to be a part of Ascension Episcopal School,” he added. “I just look forward to being able to show up and be a part of such a meaningful endeavor – to be here among these students and colleagues is such a joyful experience.” Sarah Davenport, the upper school director of Ascension, said she was elated when Dasgupta was chosen as a finalist, and it is a feel-good moment for his hard work to be recognized. “He is incredibly well-respected by his colleagues, students, and families.
He relates to students in a way that is honest and true,” she said in an email. “He brings his full self into the classroom each day that he is present— and he is present every day.” “Shome challenges his students by creating a learning experience that is involved and reflective, but is supported by a man of strong character,” she added. “He travels the road alongside his students.” Dasgupta, a published author, has been an educator for about 12 years and taught at the grade school, middle school, high school and college levels at public and independent schools. MARCH 7, 2023 BLUE GATORS CLAIMED THE TOP 2 SPOTS IN THE MATH COUNTS COMPETITION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA AT LAFAYETTE
Out of 95 students, Ascension eighth graders took the top 2 spots in the local middle school Math Counts competition at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Lilly Sheets ‘27 and Natalya Grant ‘27 earned 1st and 2nd place, respectively, from Sprint and Target round scores. The Sprint Round tests students’ speed and accuracy, while the Target Round includes more complex questions encouraging deeper thinking and problem-solving application. Additionally, Ascension’s four-person team earned 2nd place out of 8 teams, missing 1st place by only one question in the Team Round. Ascension's team consisted of Lilly Sheets '27, Natalya Grant '27, Graycen Daly '28, and Henri Durio '28, who solved challenging problems requiring collaboration and effective communication. Finally, Lilly Sheets won the fast-paced Countdown Round, a head-to-head, bracket-style competition for the top 6 individuals. Math Counts allows students to develop mathematical thinking by testing their skills against peers in an exciting and supportive environment. We are so proud of all twelve of our Blue Gators who practiced, prepared, and grew, all while having fun!

MARCH 28, 2023 | FIFTH GRADERS PERFORM SPONGEBOB, JR. Each year, 5th grade students audition for their class musical and, in turn, learn more about themselves and their classmates. This year, they performed a beautiful story of friendship and determination in SpongeBob, Jr. While being on a stage is nothing new to Blue Gators in the 5th grade, going through the audition process is an added learning experience for them. They are each cast into a role and then work hard to pull it all together for show week. We must say, all those rehearsals and running of lines was totally worth it! Great job, 5th grade!

APRIL 27, 2023 | BLUE GATORS ARE PROUD OF THEIR PARISH Upper school students and Ascension’s facilities team partnered with Parish Proud to transform the Sugar Mill Pond Campus into a cleaner and greener place. The service project included pulling weeds, trimming branches, planting flowers, and spreading mulch near our main academic building. Many students stayed well past the end of their designated time because they enjoyed being outside and beautifying their campus. Volunteering students learn the value of serving others and gain an appreciation for the world around them. PARISH PROUD Parish Proud is a program that invites both residents and businesses to join in various service projects that can benefit the community in many ways. Through service learning, participants acquire important skills, such as collaboration, teamwork, and altruism. By taking part in Parish Proud’s events, participants cooperate with others to improve public spaces, protect the environment, and cultivate a sense of service and how it can contribute to positive outcomes in the community and the world.

MAY 4-8, 2023 | ASCENSION PRESENTS MEAN GIRLS, THE MUSICAL Theatre is a vital art form helping students gain confidence, public speaking skills, the ability to work as a team, interview and audition skills, ways to think creatively, and heightened social consciousness. Upper School students had a blast donning characters from the hit show Mean Girls, and we couldn’t be prouder of all their hard work leading up to and during the 4 sold-out performances! The well-known story of Cady Heron versus Regina George drew out students who had never auditioned for a production, at least, not since the 5th grade performance where the entire grade level participated. Choosing to audition and step on stage helped to make this show that much more fun!

It cultivates personal growth, civic involvement, and practical governance knowledge in its participants to help build stronger, more wellinformed, and influential leaders for our communities, our state, and our country. Both groups experienced governmental procedures by simulating political campaigns, elections, and political processes. They also learned about citizenship and public service principles from guest speakers, elected officials, expert panels, and experienced counselors. Congratulations, and a big thank you to these Blue Gators for their commitment to our community, servant hearts, and brave leadership!

Our PTO partners with school administration each year to provide three projects (one per campus) for families to contribute to during our Fund-A-Need portion of our live and silent auction. We are so happy to say all projects have been installed over the past few months and our students are already loving them: — River Ranch Campus: a new awning for our students and teachers to be sheltered from the weather — Downtown Campus: new cafeteria tables for our lower and middle school students to eat, socialize, and gather — Sugar Mill Pond Campus: phase 1 of new furniture with partitions for our upper school students in study hall to help them focus and collaborate A big thank you to all our Fund A Need donors who contributed to these projects! Your support is what makes Ascension GREAT!

In Loving Memory Richard Anderson, Math Teacher “This is my favorite lesson. It’s delightful. It might even be magical” - Mr. Richard Anderson. Teachers and coaches come into our lives, and the best of them leave an indelible mark. Mr. Richard Anderson was one such teacher. Sadly, Mr. Anderson passed away on Monday, March 6, 2023, and his Ascension family, made up of former students, parents, colleagues, and friends, will remember him fondly and miss him greatly.
Rene’ Chiocchi, Math Teacher Ms. Chiocchi will be missed in our hallways and bleachers, but once a Blue Gator, always a Blue Gator! We are grateful to have known her for even a short time. Ms. Rene’ Chiocchi came to Ascension at the start of this school year with twenty-two years of experience in math education, primarily serving as an Algebra I and Algebra I Honors teacher in Avoyelles Parish.
Toby Fontenot, SMP Facility Director A friend of so many, Toby leaves behind a legacy of character, work ethic, care for others, and a great loyalty to the school. He cared deeply about the Ascension family and played an integral part in the life of our school. His sudden loss will leave a hole in the hearts of all who worked closely with him over the years. Toby Fontenot was the guy everyone called when something needed fixing. If it was school-related, Toby was the guy who suggested an FMX maintenance request (IYKYK).
Celie LeBlanc Ulm, Head Volleyball Coach & P.E. Teacher Celie Ulm was a dear friend, colleague, and volleyball coach to many at Ascension. A strong, faith-filled battle against an aggressive cancer was a testament of Celie living out who she always was – a courageous daughter of our Lord. We know she leaves behind a legacy of faith, hope, and love after touching the lives of so many at our school and beyond. We could not be more grateful for the time we were granted with her at Ascension.

PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION
2023 - 2024 Parent Engagement Roadmap Getting Involved & Giving Back
ANNUAL GIVING Gifts are directed to teacher salaries and benefits, curriculum resources, tuition assistance, technology improvements, security upgrades, and campus improvements. Family participation is tracked by grade and provides a barometer of the Ascension community support to external funding sources, so we hope all families will participate. If you can only make one gift this school year, we hope you will donate to Annual Giving, as it covers the gap in operating costs that tuition income does not.
