Preschool at Ascension
A YEAR FULL OF JOY AND GROWTH
What a joyful year it was at the Preschool! It is amazing to see how much our students have grown—learning, exploring, and finding joy in every moment.
At Ascension, we focus on more than just academics. We’re building a strong foundation for lifelong learning, rooted in faith and character. This year, our students learned to think critically, communicate kindly, and work together—all while growing in creativity and confidence. Instead of just giving answers, we guide our students to reflect: What went well? What could I try differently next time? This helps them grow both in the classroom and in how they treat others.

They’ve also learned to listen with care, speak with compassion, and bravely share their ideas—whether in class, on stage, or during Chapel.
Faith has been at the heart of everything we do. Through Bible stories, prayer, and conversations, our students have learned about God’s love and how to share it with others through kindness and grace.
We’ve had fun serving our community, raising butterflies, planting in our garden, and diving into hands-on projects that sparked imagination and curiosity. New traditions like the tennis clinic, our mini Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Book Fair, and the Blessing of the Classrooms made the year even more special.
Every memory from this year—big or small—has been shaped by love: love for learning, for one another, and for God.
— ASHLEY HIGGINBOTHAM , Head of Preschool

Lower and Middle School
A YEAR OF GROWTH, GRACE, & GATOR SPIRIT
What a year! From the chapel to the classroom, playground to performance stage, we’ve watched our students grow in confidence, kindness, and character. Every day together has been a gift—and a reminder of how blessed we are as a school community.
SPOTLIGHT ON THE ARTS
Our stages were anything but quiet this year! First through fourth graders lit up the room with their performances, while our fifth graders brought laughs and life lessons with Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide. And who could forget Matilda the Musical? With students from grades 6–12, this show was a sellout success, full of talent, teamwork, and unforgettable moments.
ATHLETES ON THE MOVE
Middle School Gators showed up strong this year in every season:
Fall: 8th-grade volleyball and boys cross country both finished as league runners-up. Shoutout to Charles David Cleveland—our individual league cross country champ!
Winter: Total domination from our 7th and 8th-grade boys basketball teams, taking home both regular season and tournament titles.
Spring: Our tennis teams crushed it! Boys team: league champs. Ian Trawick: singles champ. James Alldredge & Luke Daly: doubles champs. Track and swim teams also finished strong, both earning league runner-up titles.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Learning didn’t stop at our campus gates. Students explored pumpkin patches, museums, libraries, Avery
Island, and more. Big trips took our 4th–7th graders to Houston, Dallas, D.C., and across Louisiana. Hands-on learning also happened through river studies, science labs, and even a trip to the Renaissance Festival.
CREATIVE VOICES & VISION
Our artists had their work shown in professional galleries, and media students took field trips to podcast studios. The 7th grade kept the Blue Gator Buzz going strong—now in its 9th season—covering the big and small moments that make our school special.
JOY IN THE EVERYDAY
Some of the best parts of the year weren’t events—they were simple moments: morning hugs, recess laughs, shared stories, and group projects. It’s in those ordinary moments that something truly extraordinary happened.
HANDS-ON, MINDS-ON
Whether building catapults or dissecting in science, our students got their hands dirty (in the best way). Through curiosity and teamwork, they discovered new ways to learn—and love learning.
FAITH IN ACTION
Chapel leadership, daily prayer, kind acts, and community service all reminded us what it means to live out our values. Our students didn’t just talk about being brave and generous—they showed us how.
LOOKING BACK WITH GRATITUDE
This year was filled with growth, discovery, creativity, and connection. We’re so proud of every student and grateful for every moment.
— LIZ TREMBLAY, Head of Lower & Middle School

Our students continue to shine. Three seniors earned AP Scholar with Distinction honors, one earned AP Scholar with Honors, and ten others were recognized as AP Scholars. Nearly 90% of our senior class received scholarships, with a class GPA above 3.5—and nine students scored a 30 or higher on the ACT!

TRADITIONS AND TRIPS
We celebrated Homecoming, Trunk-or-Treat, and shared a Thanksgiving feast. Our senior Theology students explored local places of worship, while grade-level trips took students from Camp Cho-Yeh and college campuses in Texas to the streets of Boston.
HEARTS TO SERVE
Service remained a cornerstone of student life:
9 Our annual Chili Cookoff raised $6,500 for Miles Perret Cancer Services
9 Students gave their time at the Lafayette Animal Shelter, Second Harvest, and more
9 Our Adopt-a-Family project brightened the holidays for children across Acadiana
9 Gators for Others hosted the Adopt-a-Family project
FIRSTS AND FRESH IDEAS
9 The new NEHS Reading Buddies program brought joy to our younger students
9 A group of 8th grade boys launched our first Upper School 4-H Skeet Shooting Team
9 Juniors represented Ascension at Model UN, and our Speech & Debate team earned multiple state awards—Luke Harris even qualified for nationals!
LEARNING THAT COMES TO LIFE
Our students tackled everything from egg drop challenges and physics ramps to live dissections and language immersion at local restaurants. Whether visiting cultural sites or participating in the French Forum exchange program, their learning extended well beyond the classroom.
FINISHING STRONG
We closed the year with our fun-filled Academic Pep Rally and welcomed next year’s 8th graders during Step-Up Day. As always, our incredible teachers made all the difference—leading with energy, passion, and creativity.
We are so proud of our Blue Gators for their resilience, leadership, service, and spirit. Here’s to a year of growth—and all that’s still to come!
— SARAH DAVENPORT, Head of Upper School

The Arts at Ascension: A Year of Creativity and Celebration
This year, our Blue Gators thrived in the arts—expressing themselves with talent, heart, and an unwavering creative spirit.
The stage came alive with several incredible productions: 5th grade performed the musical Junie B. Jones, upper school performed their fall play – The Game’s Afoot, and the spring musical, Matilda, was a 6th – 12th show. These performances highlighted our students’ ability to sing, dance, and bring magical stories to life.
Our upper school visual artists also made their mark. Sadie Guillory, Amelie Huggard, Bridgette Richardson, Morgan Alspaugh, and Alexa Kidder represented Ascension at UL’s High School Rally Art Exhibition. Meanwhile, junior Ella-Grace Hebert earned the prestigious honor of having her work selected for LSU’s statewide juried exhibition hosted by the School of Art.
At the Heart for the Arts event at the ACA, our students from K-12 delighted parents, grandparents, and friends during a special encore of Matilda’s “When I Grow Up.” Student art hung on the walls for visitors to admire, while senior art students were honored and showcased their talents.
Gator Rock energized the crowd during Friday Night Lights, while our instrumental students hosted three concerts throughout the year – each one a testament to their courage and dedication. We are especially proud of The Slackers, a student band featuring seniors Gavin Stewart and Luke Falgout and juniors Corinne Mendell and Miles Eldredge, who took their sound beyond campus and earned a coveted invitation to perform on a main stage at Festival International—a true highlight of the year.
Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the studio, our Blue Gators led with excellence, kindness, and creativity. It’s been a remarkable year in the arts, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Awards +Recognition
CONGRATULATIONS TO SHOME DASGUPTA
Recipient of the Melinda Mangham Award
Established in 2021, the Melinda Mangham Excellence in Teaching Award honored the legacy of former Ascension administrator and lifelong educator Mrs. Melinda Mangham, who passed away in 2020. Each year, one teacher was recognized for exemplifying the excellence and servant leadership that defined Melinda’s life and career.

The award was presented to Mr. Shome Dasgupta, a teacher whose thoughtful preparation, genuine relationships, and servant’s heart reflected the qualities Melinda so passionately championed. His Division Head noted, “He is thoughtful and genuine in how he prepares his lessons, relates to his colleagues, and connects with his students. It’s rare to see a teacher command such a high level of trust and respect simply by being himself. He meticulously crafts his approach with each student— he relates first and teaches second. He labors over how to do things better; he is dependable and loyal; his smile is infectious, and he values feedback and collaboration.”
Mr. Dasgupta’s commitment to excellence, combined with his ability to put students first, made him a most deserving recipient of the 2025 Melinda Mangham Excellence in Teaching Award.
Past recipients include Lauren Daly (2021), Kelly Duplantis (2022), Rachael Futch (2023), and Melissa Hoover (2024).

As the longtime Football Team Mom, Christy has managed meals, coordinated logistics, and supported the team with a grace and leadership that have become her hallmark. She is often described as “a steady presence” and “someone who makes everything run smoothly without needing the spotlight,” a reflection of the selfless spirit this award was created to celebrate. They continued their tradition of excellence with 4th place finishes in both Small Varsity Pom and Small Varsity Jazz, marking five consecutive years of top-five placements in these highly competitive divisions. Individually, Molly Cormier shined as a senior solo semifinalist, placing 27th out of 180, while Isabella Malespin made an impressive mark in the junior solo division, securing 4th place out of 120. With their dedication, talent, and unstoppable spirit, the Gator Jazz team continues to raise the bar and make their mark on the national stage!
GOLF STATE CHAMPION TEAM
Ascension Episcopal School’s boys golf team has once again etched its name into Louisiana high school sports history, capturing the Division III state championship for the seventh consecutive year! Despite weather challenges that shortened the LHSAA state tournament to 27 holes, the Blue Gators remained poised and focused—delivering a performance that secured them the WIN.
Leading the team effort was sophomore Noah Chauvin, who earned his second individual state title with a score of 2-under-par 106. Chauvin demonstrated impressive composure, rebounding from an early double bogey with two clutch birdies to help secure both individual and team victories.
Head coach Logan Ray praised the team’s legacy of excellence and commitment. He described the achievement as unprecedented, emphasizing that it reflects both the school’s strong commitment to its golf program and the dedication of the players. He noted that the team understands they’re part of a larger tradition—one they’re determined to uphold.

Ascension Episcopal School proudly marked its 65th anniversary with a series of celebratory events from October 10-12, 2024. The heartfelt events brought together alumni, current families, past and present faculty, and the wider community for a weekend of remembrance and reconnection. Highlights included the Homecoming Parade, a spirited football game, a Downtown Campus chapel service, and a special brunch with memorabilia displays of the school’s rich history. The most memorable moment was when guests sang Happy Birthday to Dr. Jeanette Parker, the founding Head of Ascension Day School, for her 90th birthday.
Former SMP Chaplain Father Brandt Montgomery opened the service in prayer, and the inaugural president of the newly formed Ascension Alumni Association, Michael Dalman, welcomed and thanked guests for supporting Ascension. Attendees then enjoyed tours of the Downtown Campus led by middle school leadership students. They visited former classrooms and learned about the evolution of key locations such as the playground and Parker Hall. Memorabilia such as old cheer uniforms, yearbooks, and past class auction projects were on display, and a continuous video played digitized school footage from the school’s inception in 1959.
Many shared favorite memories of Ascension, and several remembered Mrs. Stiff fondly, “Mrs Stiff was a gifted teacher. I am grateful for the encouragement she gave me.” Sally Bollich Bru, 1960’s Ascension Day School Alum.
Lisa Guidry, ADS alum, faculty, alum parent, and alum grandparent, couldn’t choose one favorite, commenting, “I have so many wonderful memories of my time at Ascension Day School! The friends I made, many of whom I still see, the amazing teachers and activities. My favorite would be a two-week study we did for several years called Interim. The other favorite would be our sixth-grade class starting the Haunted House as a fundraiser. We had a school carnival in the spring of 1974, and our class planned and carried out a haunted house for that event with great popularity. The idea was born, and the Haunted House started that fall!”
This anniversary weekend celebrated the school’s past, present, and future, honoring Ascension’s legacy of educational excellence in a Christian environment and its enduring community spirit.
Once a Blue Gator, Always a Blue Gator!

PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION
The Ascension PTO was blessed with a great group of parent volunteers who went above and beyond to serve our school, faculty, staff, and students. We certainly stayed busy and had a lot of fun along the way!
Our 2024 PTO Fall Festival was a tremendous success thanks to the vision and efforts of our Fall Festival committee chairs and all the parent volunteers who helped execute it.
Because of the hard work of these volunteers and the support and participation of our Blue Gator community, we raised $214,761 from this fun-filled, family-friendly day.
Funds raised from this event helped bridge the gap between operational expenses and tuition revenue and supported our school in many ways, including specific projects on each campus, faculty & staff bonuses, faculty & staff appreciation week, and special events, such as Thanksgiving Feast, throughout the year.
Thank you to all who volunteered or supported the Ascension Episcopal School PTO in any capacity this year. Our success was not possible without you!

FINE ARTS ALLIANCE
Our Fine Arts Alliance Board was filled with immense pride and gratitude for the extraordinary accomplishments and moments of creativity that have defined our parent service organization.
The year began with the gator ornament project, and it was a joy to see the imagination and personality that students poured into each hand-painted design. The FAA was especially grateful to the faculty who supported and guided students in bringing their ideas to life.
Another memorable painted gator auction was hosted, featuring stunning works created by local artists—and some of Ascension’s very own faculty and students. The creativity and generosity on display reflected the vibrant arts community that continues to grow stronger each year.
The year ended with Heart for the Arts, a joyful celebration of student talent spanning Kindergarten through 12th grade. The artwork and performances were a powerful reminder of how the arts bring the community together and elevate every voice in the school family.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication, generosity, and vision of the FAA board members, whose commitment to nurturing connection and creativity guided every initiative and helped strengthen the foundation of support for the fine arts at Ascension. Thank you to all who contributed and to this incredible year. We look forward to the continued journey of celebrating the arts, championing students, and growing in community.

Ascension alumni & friends celebrating the season at the Alumni Christmas Social, Adopted Dog Brewing Company – December 2024.

This group of alums graduated from Ascension Day School’s 8th Grade Class of 1978 and remain the closest of friends! They recently traveled to the Dallas–Fort Worth area for a reunion that featured “Ascension Plaid” headbands and customized ADS baseball caps. It’s truly amazing that these alums have maintained their friendship for over half a century. Some met as early as Nursery, while others connected as late as 5th grade — but their Ascension roots run deep!

Remember When?
Remembering Fran Barbato

In January 2025, the Ascension Episcopal School family said goodbye to Mrs. Fran Barbato, a beloved and long-standing member of our community.
Fran dedicated 30 remarkable years to Ascension, teaching grades 1–8, serving as Middle School Head for 12 years, and concluding her time with us as Interim Director in 2011.
Throughout her long career, thousands of Ascension students passed through her classrooms, were challenged in their studies, and were encouraged and inspired by her example.
“The impact she had on so many kids in years that are so critical to their development for adolescence brings tears to my eyes. She was a guiding light for Christ to everyone she met.”
—
Anna Remondet Rodriguez (Class of ’13)
Fran’s unwavering commitment to education, leadership, and the nurturing of young minds left an indelible mark on the Ascension community. Her legacy continues to live on in the lives of those she inspired.
