A LETTER FROM Dr. Pat Taylor
Dear Ascension Community,
As I come to the end of my year as your Interim Head of School, I write to thank you for the opportunity to serve your school and community. Before April of 2018, I had never been to Lafayette and had no knowledge of Ascension Episcopal School. For the record, I had never really considered an Interim Head position. On my first visit, I was convinced that this was a special school. From the dedication of the Board, Rector, faculty, and staff, I found a school that was mission-driven in all of its operations. After 46 years in independent schooling and visiting literally over 100 schools in the southeast, I can honestly say Ascension Episcopal School is a very special place.
The talents displayed by students in the classroom, athletic competition, and the arts can compete with any school. The faculty and staff support the mission through their instruction, care, and nurturing of all students. The progressive leadership by the administration to school improvement is constant, and the core of character and spiritual growth is seen daily in the Episcopal traditions of care and excellence.
I was privileged to work with the Search Committee and Board as your new Head of School was sought, and their serious and professional approach to the process could be a model for all schools. As Ascension enters its next chapter under the leadership of a new Head of School, it is most energizing and exciting. Jeff Plunk is an outstanding educator and leader who looks forward to his and his family's move to Lafayette. I have gotten to know him over the last few months, and I continue to be impressed with his experience, knowledge, leadership skills, and student care. Jeff is a committed educator and mission-driven leader who I am confident will serve Ascension quite well as Head of School.
As my time has come to an end, Sherrye and I thank you for allowing us to be part of this amazing school and community. We will keep in contact and are excited to see all the incredible opportunities the school will afford the student body moving forward.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve, as well as your care, concern, openness, and guidance provided to Sherrye and me. Lastly, thank you to the Board of Trustees and Rector for the opportunity to complete my career as an educator at Ascension Episcopal School. This year has truly been a blessing.

Welcoming JEFF PLUNK
In November 2018, the Board of Trustees of Ascension Episcopal School announced the selection of Jeffrey N. Plunk as our next Head of School beginning July 1, 2019. Jeff has come to Lafayette from Atlanta, Georgia, where he previously served as the High School Principal of Wesleyan School. Jeff and his wife Jennifer, have two children Matthew who is a Freshman at Georgia Tech and Maddie, who is a11th grader at our Sugar Mill Pond campus.
This selection was the result of an extensive, six - month, national search conducted by a nine - member Head of School Search Committee and supported by Southern Teachers Agency. The committee selected three outstanding finalists who were invited to Ascension for interview sessions with focus groups consisting of trustees, parents, faculty, staff, and students. Jeff went on to receive the Search Committee’s recommendation to the Board of Trustees who, in turn, unanimously voted for his appointment with the approval of the Rector.
In selecting Jeff as our next Head of
School, the Board of Trustees chose a leader with a lifelong passion for education and learning. In addition, the trustees valued his immediate connections with Ascension students, his high level of energy and enthusiasm, and his many and varied accomplishments. Jeff best embodied our school’s mission and values.
Jeff Plunk has a track record of creating programs that help students understand and reach their potential. With a bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in applied mathematics and a master’s degree from Georgia State University in math education, Jeff is an educator first. He has taught at three of the most highly-regarded schools in the Atlanta area, Woodward Academy, Westminster Schools, and Wesleyan School. Over his twelve years at Wesleyan, he has served as a teacher, Assistant Dean, Dean, and High School Principal. Upon describing his leadership, Jeff's references praise his work on
improving retention, expanding AP offerings, and focusing on student health and wellness.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we would like to thank the members of the Head of School Search Committee, our consultants at Southern Teachers Agency, and all the members of our Ascension community who have contributed greatly to the search process. We laud all who were involved for their commitment and dedication to the integrity of the search process. We thank you for your support and ask you to join us in welcoming the Plunk family to our community.
Sincerely,
Jerry Vascocu Board of Trustees Chair, 2018-2019
SUGAR MILL POND CAMPUS
Team Teaching at the Downtown Campus
Our Sugar Mill Pond campus students shared their knowledge and passion with our Downtown students in early spring as we hosted our first annual teaching crossover day. Divided in groups of 4-6, high school juniors and seniors team taught our downtown students in the areas of Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. It was a wonderful way for our high school students to show their mastery in a subject and for our younger students to experience real life application in certain subject areas. We are already planning our teaching crossover day for next year. This will be a tradition that will certainly continue.
Upper School Service Project Wins Project Front Yard Award
IBERIABANK’s downtown Lafayette headquarters was the setting for the fifth annual Project Front Yard Awards on Thursday evening, October 4. Commemorating the five-year anniversary of its launch in 2014, the Project Front Yard Awards highlight individuals and organizations working to improve the face of the community.
The awards are given annually to recognize individuals and organizations that beautify and clean up Lafayette’s physical landscape or inspire others to do the same through eco-education. Our Sugar Mill Pond campus was honored to be presented with the Best in Cleanliness award this year. For the past three years led by SMP art teacher, Rosalind Robertson, our group of high school students have hosted quarterly volunteer events with Project Front Yard, such as litter cleanups to tree mulching projects. Committing almost 250 individual volunteers and more than 9,000 hours of volunteer service, Ascension’s volunteer contributions equate to a value of approximately $225,000 back to the community.

DOWNTOWN CAMPUS
An "Unconventional" Arts & Media Fashion Show
At the end of the school year, Downtown middle school art and media students came together for the first annual "Design Challenge — Project Runway: Unconventional Materials". Teams of media literacy students were paired with teams of visual arts students in a collaboration to document the design process and final results.
Art teacher, Danielle Bacque credits the partnership with teacher Heather Gros and her media literacy class for making the fashion show happen. Originally the plan was to do a small classroom show, but the momentum
grew into a full-blown runway show for parents and other students.
To begin the project, 7th grade students took a field trip to the Acadiana Center for the Arts to find inspiration in current exhibits. Each student had to choose a piece of art and turn in a design based on the piece of art they chose. Students were then placed in groups of four and asked to narrow the designs down to one they would bring to life together. Fellow middle-school media students filmed and photographed the process as the art students cut paper lanterns into skirts and tissue
paper into big, colorful feathers. On the day of the showcase, these creative students styled their models from head to toe, adding colorful wigs, over-the-top hats and glitter makeup, and sent them down the runway in Coughlin Hall on the Downtown campus. The highlight of the event was when each group explained to the judges how the look related to their inspiration and the reason behind what materials they chose.
Guest “Judges” included Ginger Gibson, Melinda Mangham, Virginia Brown, Joshua McClymont, Bree Sargent, from the Acadiana Center for the Arts and even Gabrielle Savoy, one of the artists from the AcA exhibit. Judges looked for details that showed students' style as well as their interpretation of the art.
This won't be the last design challenge at Ascension. Ms. Bacque plans to do a different one every year, asking students to design everything from furniture to logos to athletic clothes.
RIVER RANCH CAMPUS Innovation Lab Opens
In 2018-2019, our River Ranch campus unveiled our all new Innovation Lab at the Preschool. Led by veteran River Ranch teachers, Allyson Womack and Leigh Barry, the Innovation Lab has functioned as a dedicated learning space for students to engage, explore, and exercise their creativity.
Pre-K4 and Kindergarten students rotate through the lab every other week and participate in various activities and challenges with our Innovation Lab teacher and assistant.
Students learn collaboration, complex communication, critical thinking, self-reflection, persistence, problemsolving, and resilience. The lab also houses a dedicated science experiment area and maker space/tinker area that is utilized at other times by classroom teachers and their students.
Through nurturing the spirit, stimulating the

intellect, and encouraging creativity, the lab indeed supports Ascension’s mission of balanced excellence with our youngest students.
With great pride and excitement, we are pleased to announce that Ascension senior Ella Sheets was named a 2019 recipient of the Stamps Scholarship, LSU's top scholarship opportunity for select incoming students of the Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College.
Penelope W. and E. Roe Stamps IV began the scholarship program in 2006 to afford exceptional students an extraordinary higher education experience. The Stamps Family Charitable Foundation gives to over 40 colleges and universities, and LSU Stamps Scholars join approximately 730 other Stamps Scholars from various schools. All LSU Stamps Scholars receive the full cost of attendance for four years, with a maximum of $14,000 for enrichment experiences such as study abroad programs or research opportunities. Congratulations to Ella and her parents Andy and Christy Sheets for this very prestigious award!
ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS Staying Connected
The Ascension Episcopal School Alumni
Association had a busy and productive year!
Here are some of the highlights:
Continued communication through our social media – Facebook and Instagram pages – posting photos of current alumni events, class reunions, and highlighting individual alumni and their achievements and activities.
Hosted Alumni Tailgating Tent at Ascension Homecoming Game in October. We had representatives from the Classes of ’09, ’11, ’12, ’13, ’14, ’15, ’16 , ’17 and ’18! The group enjoyed catching up with their friends, as well as watching the Blue Gators win an exciting homecoming game!
The alumni Pancake Breakfast was held in May and honored our newest alumni, the Class of 2019. Held at the SMP Pavilion on the morning of graduation, the celebration included pancakes (with all the fixings!), some valuable advice from Mrs. Courtney Robert, and the presentation of alumni t-shirts to the graduating class. We had alumni from the classes of ’11, ’12, ’13, ’17 and ’18, who came out to serve as pancake chefs. A beautiful morning and a wonderful gathering of Ascension alumni!
We will be busy working on celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Ascension Episcopal School during the next year – and hope to get as many alumni as possible back to one of our campuses to help in the celebration!
Stay tuned for more fun and exciting times with the Ascension Alumni Association!

Luke Butcher
Luke Butcher graduated from Ascension Episcopal School in May of 2015; he was the Co-Valedictorian and a National Merit Scholar. He attended Georgetown University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Economics in May 2019.
During the summer of 2019, I studied Hindi in India as part of the US Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship Program. The CLS program funds two months of intensive, immersive study of languages that are often not studied at US universities but are valued by the US government. As part of the immersion program, I took Hindi classes during the week, met with local students to practice conversation, lived with an Indian family, and visited cultural sites during the weekends. I completed this program in Rajasthan, one of India's most colorful states, in the capital city of Jaipur.
In August 2019, after completing the program, I began my job in North India, where Hindi is the primary language spoken. I work as an Associate at IDinsight, a non-profit that provides data consulting to governments and NGOs in a wide range of fields, from health to agriculture to education. IDinsight's mission is to help policymakers and leaders of NGOs make better decisions for the communities they serve. As an Associate, I work with the IDinsight team and clients to run program evaluations and exploratory studies, among other services. IDinsight's main clients in India include the central government and state governments, as well as large NGOs such as Educate Girls. I am very much enjoying contributing to the mission and learning much more about India.

AUXILLARY PROGRAMS AT ASCENSION
Summer at Ascension offered 19 camps during the summer of 2018. Children entering PK3 through 8th grade had the opportunity to embark on fun, adventure, and learning on one of our campuses.
Whether campers were stepping into a woodland camp-out with their American Doll in tow or onto the baseball field decked out in sunscreen, a bat, and glove, they were sure to have a great time. Our faculty members go above and beyond when designing each week of a themed camp because they want campers leaving with huge smiles on their faces. The summer closed out with Blue Gator Bridge Courses for grades 1-7 and Blue Gator Prep Courses for grades 8-9. These courses are intended to help students and parents ease into the school year by reviewing material from the year prior and getting a glimpse into the year ahead.
Throughout the 2018-19 school year, our teachers and coaches offered students even more camps after school, on weekends, and on holiday breaks. Between the River Ranch and Downtown campuses, there were 38 After School classes held and 13 School Year camps. After School Classes appealed to many interests from focusing on Fall art and pottery to embarking on a secret mission in Secret Spy School to Flag Football. Our School Year Camps ranged from Movie & Game Nights where parents were able to drop their little ones off from 6 - 9 PM on a Friday night to the always popular, Eric Mouton’s Basketball Camp.

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE Dinner
On May 8th, the Board of Trustees held its annual Leadership Circle Reception at Pour in River Ranch as a way to celebrate our generous Ascension Fund donors. The reception celebrates those individuals who make Ascension one of their main philanthropic investments by donating at the Leadership Circle or above.
STATE OF ADVANCEMENT
During the event, board, vestry and faculty members got the opportunity to visit with donors and thank them personally for their considerable gifts to the Ascension Fund. Jerry Vascocu, President of the Board of Trustees, highlighted the tremendous growth Ascension has seen during his time as a parent. Advancement Chair, Ross Woodring also expressed his appreciation to all of the donors. Concluding the evening’s event, Interim Head of School, Pat Taylor shared with the group his observations from his time at Ascension as well as insight on where the school is headed under new Head of School, Jeff Plunk.
The Advancement Committee, with support from the Board of Trustees and the Development Team, began the year with a deep dive look into what was working and not working as it related to the advancement of the school's mission. We worked hand in hand with school administration and the leadership of our Parent Support Organizations to figure out how to best communicate, facilitate, and recognize the generosity of all who provide not only financial resources but the gift of their time, to the "advancement" of Ascension Episcopal School.
To that end, in many ways, a new bar was set for the culture of giving in both time and resources as we look to continue moving into a bright future. This year saw tremendous support of the broader school community events, with the PTO Fall Fest as well as PSO specific events that drew support for their individual goals that directly impact our students. It is with great pleasure that we say CONGRATULATIONS to all for the success of the Ascension Fund, as we achieved both record participation 47% and a record amount raised $240,000! The measure of success demonstrated by Ascension Fund participation speaks
volumes to the dedication, passion, and commitment of all who gave time and resources to Ascension.
As we look to continue developing our culture of giving, we move forward with excitement and vigor into the next school year with our new Head of School, Jeff Plunk. Thank you to all who contributed to the advancement of the school's mission to deliver "Balanced Excellence."

Getting Involved & GIVING BACK
It is with great pleasure that I report the "State of Advancement" at Ascension is very strong.
WORKING TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE BALANCED EXCELLENCE $
THE ASCENSION FUND
Each year our community donates between 7-8% of our operating budget, and tuition dollars cover the rest. These donations are made through our Parent Support Organizations and through the Ascension Fund.
The Ascension Fund is a significant catalyst; a vital means of advancing our mission of educational excellence in a Christian environment.
Our annual fund procures more hours of professional development for our teachers, resources for our coaches and directors, better facilities for our children, and plants the seeds for future growth. In short, the significance of the Ascension Fund derives from its ability to grow our mission.

PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION
The mission and overall purpose of PTO for the 2018-2019 year was Community Building. Our goal was “to have families as active participants in the life of the school, and feel welcomed, valued and connected to each other, to school staff and to what students were learning and doing in class.”
The theme of the year was community building - we built bridges of partnership, communication and advocacy. The family-schoolcommunity partnership, with the student at the center, is at the core of Ascension’s PTO. All of the PTO Presidents before me have helped to establish, continue and strengthen those partnerships. Yes, we did faculty birthday brunches, held classroom parties for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s day, handled faculty CPE day, Honor Chapel, Veterans Day, Mardi Gras celebrations and numerous other as needed activities.
However, with the assistance of parents, families, teachers,
administrators, local businesses and our students we did the following:
a Came together to celebrate with our first Ascension Fall Festival and spring picnic (Picnic at the Pond).
a We organized our first Ascension Men’s Group (Gator Dad’s) where dads, grandfathers, uncles, etc. came together to support our needs at various functions.
a We also engaged our students to show gratitude to the faculty with “Random Acts of Appreciation” for the 2019 Teacher Appreciation week. Students took the initiative to high 5 teachers, make handmade cards and flowers, develop special digital messages for faculty that may not get thanked often and say a prayer for the friends, teachers and school staff that make their learning experience so amazing!
a We also put our school prayer at the forefront of our projects - utilizing it in a placemat for our Thanksgiving feast and giving it as gifts to our staff to hang around school and their homes.
a In building communication bridges, I believed that the more people that were asked and engaged in PTO, the more families felt welcomed and empowered to support its success. In January of 2018, we surveyed parents for their feedback and input for the coming school year. We asked who wanted to be involved and made sure those individuals would be active participants in our school. I believed that PTO is a key partner for continuous school improvement and its awareness is essential. With this idea, we developed our first:
a PTO created a school newsletter to communicate monthly on various activities and involvement opportunities. On a smaller scale, we worked on building unity in the grade.
a Room moms organized parent activities outside of school where everyone was invited to gather and share some time together.
a We developed relationships and built advocacy bridges that supported, encouraged and promoted our school.
In this closing letter, I say WE a lot. I could not have done this year without the 16 STRONG women who worked by my side. These amazing ladies, along with room moms and numerous volunteers, I can’t thank you enough for standing by my side throughout this journey. We were fiscally responsible requesting quotes from local businesses and saving on every line item. Our goal was to raise $100,000 to go directly towards teacher bonuses and security improvements across all three campuses. We ended the school year saving money and raising $115,000 and putting it where we said we would.
To our current PTO leaders and members and to potential future PTO leaders, I ask that you share my vision in making a difference in the school. I ask that you embrace creativity and innovation and help to meet the challenges of relevance and inclusion. Working together we can welcome new ideas that can support our students and include our members in more opportunities in our school and community.
Thank you for your faith and trust in selecting me to serve. I also want to thank my friends and family who have encouraged me and supported me; my boys Tre and Cooper who endured having the mom that was always at school; and my husband, Stuart, who picked up all the slack as I served in this role.
Thank you,

FINE ARTS ALLIANCE
Bravo to the Fine Arts Alliance members, volunteers, and donors! This was
I am pleased to report this year we had a record year with 62 members, and we funded and fully completed several huge special projects. The total sound, light, and electrical reconstruction to our Downtown Activity Center dramatically improved all theatrical performances from the first to the seventh grades and the purchase of a new portable sound system was used on all three campuses for multiple events. Membership dues, proceeds from our four productions, generous donations from Ascension families, and our fundraiser, It’s A Wonderful Life, brought in a total of $67,883 and made these projects a reality!
The FAA loved supporting our talented, energetic, and creative Fine Arts Department teachers. We welcomed a new faculty member and celebrated a spring wedding of another. Downtown art teacher, Tina Frederick was accepted into the highly renowned INSEA World Congress Art
convention in July in Vancouver, Canada. We honored two outstanding Seniors who were accepted into prestigious art programs with the first ever Art Signing Day at SMP. At the Spring Senior Showcase held at SMP, all Senior art students were congratulated on their accomplishments and the whole Ascension community was treated to artworks, jewelry, songs, and drama performances.
a This year, our Sugar Mill Pond Theatre Department presented Freaky Friday at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in the fall and The Importance of Being Earnest in the SMP black box theatre in the spring.
a On the Downtown Campus, every lower school grade had a largescale performance, our 5 performed Elf, Jr., and the 6 graders showcased their talents in Seussical, Jr.
a The River Ranch campus again performed wonderful Christmas and spring shows.
an incredible year as the FAA continued to promote a love and passion for the Arts throughout our whole community!

BOOSTER CLUB
The Athletic Booster Club is proud to report another great year. As we remain committed to supporting the development of Ascension’s studentathletes and providing our coaches with various tools to help them succeed, our mission was exemplified through many achievements this past year:
a State Champions: Boys Golf, Girls Tennis, and Girls Swimming
a State Runner-ups: Girls Volleyball & Boys Baseball
a Academic All-State: 7 athletes
During 2018-2019, the Booster Club raised over $158,000 to support our Middle School through High School sports. While membership dues supplemented the athletic budget, remaining funds were used towards other significant requests from the Athletic Director and coaches.
GOLF TOURNAMENT
Chaired by NAOMI MARAIST
Total Raised $ 25,125
For the last school year, these include:
a Softball press box
a Softball sound system
a Baseball sound system
Our remaining funds of over $30,000 will be secured in an Ascension account dedicated to the building of our future track at the Sugar Mill Pond Campus. This track will benefit our entire school for years to come: providing our cheerleaders with a dry area to cheer, athletic teams a place to develop cardiac endurance, and countless other ways. As we work to continue building a school that strives for Balanced Excellence, the track will serve as one more piece of the vision.
