AUGUST 27, 2021 | OPENING CONVOCATION

We officially kicked off the school year with an in-person and live-streamed gathering of our student body, faculty, and staff in the Downtown Activity Center for a special Opening Convocation.

SEPTEMBER 21, 2021 | HURRICANE IDA

In an effort to help our neighbors affected by Hurricane Ida, Ascension partnered with United Way of Acadiana, Catholic Charities of Acadiana and Second Harvest Food Bank - Feeding South Louisiana collecting food and supplies on all three of our campus locations.

SEPTEMBER 22, 2021 | SEE YOU AT THE POLE

Students and faculty on our Downtown and Sugar Mill Pond Campuses gathered before school for See You at The Pole. Year after year, lower, middle and upper school students at Ascension proudly participate in this global day of student prayer. We have much to be grateful for and much to pray for today and everyday.

OCTOBER 8, 2021 | BLESSING OF THE PETS

Pets are a joy and a blessing, and it was such a treat to have them on campus for our Blessing of the Pets Services! We strive each day to care for our living (and stuffed) pets in a way that honors God and His creation.

DECEMBER 6, 2021 | TEACHER AWARD NOMINATIONS

United Way of Acadiana Teacher Awards recognize educators who are academically inspiring, dedicated to their students’ success, and are resilient and creative in their profession.

Take a look at our nominees for the 2021-2022 school year.

It is

supreme

to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.

TLC drummer and Emmy-winning voiceover artist, Tom Knight, spoke with some of our seventh graders in Mr. Hall’s music class today to give them tips as they record podcasts for a class project!

m = rise / run

Using slope, students determined measurements for six-panel skirts to fit various celebrities and mythical creatures for upcoming engagements. Provided with measurements, students calculated the size of each skirt panel based on waist, hip, and hemline measurements. Thank you, Ms. Robideaux, for an engaging lesson!

the
art of the teacher

Inspired by a family trip adventuring on zip lines, mountain coasters, sky lifts, incline railways, and white water rafting, Innovation & Technology teacher Heather Gros tasked 3rd and 4th grade students with a scaled down Design Challenge of their own.

As any parent of young children can attest, preschool students rarely sit still for very long, but these Blue Gators get in some much needed R&R in the shape of the alphabet throughout the year.

Great work learning those letters, Blue Gators!

Upper school physics students worked in groups to design cars with similar safety features our cars have today. Using popsicle sticks, bendy straws, construction paper, and rubber bands for the body and structure, the car was intended to keep a most precious cargo safe: an egg.

6th grade students participated in the third annual Box Car Derby. The day involved prederby and post-derby work in math, science, art, history, and english classes. From learning the origins of such an event to discussing aerodynamics, axels, and velocity formulas, students designed box cars for a battle royal of sorts. Students built box cars from various household items like CD’s (not that they know what those are), rubber bands, and pipe cleaners. During test runs, they embraced failure, adapted designs, and motivated each other to keep going.

NOVEMBER 25, 2021 | GIVING TUESDAY

We exceeded our $10,000 goal, met our “match donation” goal and doubled our family participation in Annual Giving!

Giving Tuesday is a global day of charitable giving that takes place annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It was established in 2012 as a response to the commercialization and consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

For Ascension Episcopal School, Giving Tuesday represents an opportunity to connect with our community and raise funds for critical programs and initiatives. Our school relies on the generosity of our supporters to provide a top-notch education for students and to invest in their future.

The impact of Giving Tuesday on Ascension Episcopal School is significant. It provides us with the resources we need to continue delivering a high-quality education to our students.

DECEMBER 15, 2021 | PET SCARVES PROJECT

Our pet scarves project enabled our middle schoolers to raise money for a children’s toy drive, while learning about business and having fun at the same time! Planning this project involved teamwork - from scheduling a time to get together and create, to picking out materials, to setting prices. The sales strategy this group formulated was to make different size scarves for different dogs and other animals, in order to appeal to a larger group of potential buyers. They also added custom Ascension logos to make the scarves more personalized. The goal was to earn enough money to buy a variety of toys and be able to provide the perfect toy for each child. The results of their hard work were outstanding and enabled them to purchase dolls, toy cars and even sports equipment for the children’s toy drive.

DECEMBER 20, 2021 | CHRISTMAS GIFT SHOP

At the 2nd annual Student Council-led Christmas Gift Shop, students had the opportunity to play Santa and buy gifts for their family, friends, AND pets. Middle school students worked hard making gifts to sell, organizing favorites, and producing commercials which aired in classrooms the week leading up to the gift shop.

JANUARY 20, 2022 | LOUISIANA ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT COUNCILS’ STATE CONVENTION

Eleven middle school student leaders represented Ascension at the Louisiana Association of Student Councils’ state convention at Archbishop Hannan High School in Covington. It was three exciting days of speakers, competitions, and leadership coming alive for 80+ middle and high schools from across Louisiana.

A special congratulations to seventh grade student, Natalya Grant, for winning first place in the state middle school oratory contest. She was invited to read her speech to the entire delegation as a winner, which she impressively did by memory.

And the accolades don’t end there. Our middle school student council was awarded both the Gold Council Award and the Student Council Week Merit Award.

The lessons learned and the inspiration gained during the 2021 Student Council Convention will carry these students for years to come as they continue to find new ways to support not only their school but also their community.

FEBRUARY 1, 2023 | COACH OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Coach Colleen Barczyk, the 2020-21 NFHS Coach of the Year in Girls Swimming!

Coach Barczyk was selected by the Louisiana High School Coaches Association (LHSCA) for her performance as a coach on and off the field in the 2020-21 Season.

We, along with LHSCA, are grateful for her service, sacrifice, example and teaching of athletes in her program.

Coach Colleen swam competitively since age 5. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Auburn University in Biology/ History with a minor in Education. She then went on to receive her Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine. She was a Junior and Senior National Qualifier whom went on to swim on scholarship at Auburn under Coach Dave Marsh.

She has been the Head Coach of City of Lafayette Aquatics since it began with previous coaching experience at All Acadiana Aquatics, Stingray Swim Club (Atlanta, GA.) and Brevard Swim Team (Cocoa, FL.) Coach Colleen has coached numerous swimmers to the National, Junior National, and Sectional level as well as many state level swimmers. She is presently the General Chairman of Louisiana Swimming.

Coach Colleen coaches Ascension High School Team. She has also been involved with coaching TCH, ESA, Carencro, and WCA. Coach Colleen has coached ESA to a Boys State Championship and to several girls State Runner Up Titles.

Colleen was recently honored by Louisiana Swimming at the USA Swimming Convention with a Lifetime USA Swimming Membership Award for her dedication to the sport of swimming in Louisiana.

She is married to Dr. David Barczyk and they have two children, Ascension Alpha Omega graduates, Victoria ‘15 and Jillian ‘19.

FEBRUARY 4, 2022 | 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL

To celebrate their 100th day of school, our kindergarten classes journeyed to our Sugar Mill Pond campus to celebrate with Mr. Ducote’s Pre-Calculus class. From 100 exercises to stacking 100 pennies to creating a 100 dot hat, our upper school students lead our Kindergarteners with patience, laughter, and creativity.

We love being a K-12 school all the time, but especially for moments like these. When our Blue Gators can connect across campuses and share classroom experiences, everyone wins. We aren’t sure who smiled more, our little Blue Gators or our big ones!

MARCH 2, 2022 | PYGMIE FUNDRAISER

Every Lent, Ascension church and school dedicate their support for the Epiphany School in Uganda which educates over 200 children, grades 1-7, many of whom are Batwa. In cooperation with Reaching the Pygmies Ministry, founded by The Rev’d Charles Busingye, Ascension has supported the development of the school and settlement for the Batwa who were displaced from their ancestral land in the mountain rainforest 30 years ago.

This year, Ascension’s Lenten campaign raised $21,000 to support a significant portion of the Epiphany School’s annual budget. These funds provide for teacher salaries, food and supplies for the students and basic expenses for the operation of the school. Additionally, 30 iPads were donated by Ascension Episcopal School and delivered by Dr. Charlie Pinches and students from the University of Scranton, PA. Each iPad is loaded with educational software for teachers and students who have become the first in their province to benefit from such technology.

Fr. Busingye shared his gratitude: “Once again, allow me to say that I am so grateful for all you have done to uplift the standard of this school and its continuity.”

MARCH 21, 2022 | MATH TOURNAMENT

Upper school mathematics teacher Taylor Ducote, middle school mathematics teacher Lauren Daly and 22 Blue Gators ranging from 7th grade to 12th grade spent the day in a series of individual and team tests landing Ascension as a top finisher in several areas including 1st place awards in pre-algebra, calculus, and middle school math. With so many Blue Gators placing in the top 3 of the subject focus, Ascension was awarded the Sweepstakes Award which comes with a traveling trophy. Next year, the trophy will be brought back to the competition and awarded to the school who sweeps to competition. For now, that trophy will live a good, happy life at Ascension Episcopal School.

Congratulations to each Blue Gator for competing and every mathematics faculty member for a job well done!

APRIL 14, 2022 | LIVING WAX MUSEUM

The time-honored tradition of 2nd grade students performing a “Living Wax Museum” always brings smiles from museum visitors. These students honored the legacy of men and women known for wit, accomplishment, bravery, and scientific discovery. They researched, wrote biographies, memorized speeches, and recited their monologue on cue for inquisitive patrons. These 2nd graders showed wit, accomplishment, and bravery just like each researched historical figure.

Thank you to our 2nd grade teachers for preparing our students and to the parents for supporting this “historical” day!

APRIL 28, 2022 | TENNIS TEAM WINS STATE

The Blue Gators Girls Tennis Team won the 2022 LHSAA Division IV State Championship at University of Louisiana at Monroe. We’re so proud of our Blue Gators!

MAY 3, 2022 | BOYS GOLF WINS STATE

The Boys Golf Team won their fourth straight LHSAA Division III State Championship in May! This team had quite the season – breaking several school records! Way to go Blue Gators!!!

MAY 1, 2022 | MAY DAY

As Kindergarten students near the end of their tenure at our preschool, we are thrilled to have celebrated them on May Day. With help from junior students, our youngest Blue Gators participated in activities like face painting, crafts, and games. The day wouldn’t be complete without Annie and Ben, our 2022 May Day Royalty, leading the charge as Kindergarten students wrap the May Pole.

We love to see cross campus days where our upper school students and lower school students get to enjoy the day together. Thank you, junior students, for journeying to the preschool campus.

In an effort to help our neighbors affected by Hurricane Ida, Ascension partnered with United Way of Acadiana,

Geaux Blue Gators!

MAY 12, 2022 | BEN LEONARD ADVANCES TO THE FINALS IN THE LOUISIANA FILM PRIZE JR COMPETITION

Ben Leonard ‘22, videographer, winner of the Ann Chance Award for Excellence in the Arts, and current student at The Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA, advances to the finals in the Louisiana Film Prize Jr Competition when his script was selected from hundreds of submissions. Ben brought together 9 fellow students to produce a short film which will be judged by a panel of mentor judges in the film industry.

Curious about the film? You can grab some popcorn and watch ‘Haunted!’ at this link: https://youtu.be/lNbt9mCUrM0, but the film goes like this: After moving into his new dream home, Andrew discovers he might have just moved into a nightmare. Haunted! is an uproariously new comedy about a man who finds out that his new home isn’t really vacant and the current tenants—a group of various generational ghosts—don’t want another landlord.

Inspired by Louisiana Film Prize, Film Prize Junior is a student short film competition for middle and high school students across the state of Louisiana. For this competition, educators and students work together to create a concept, write a story, and produce and edit a short film with help from our team members and film mentors. If an entrant to our festival makes

it through our competition, we showcase their short film at our film festival. Furthermore, entries can qualify for huge prizes including equipment grants for the schools, scholarships for the students and cash rewards for the educators!

MAY 5-8, 2022 | LITTLE WOMEN

With a cast of 21 upper school students, Little Women, the Musical came alive on stage for 4 showings to over 400 patrons. We know May can be quite busy as the school year wraps up, but we are so proud of these Blue Gators putting in countless hours of rehearsals, costume changes, and show day mic checks.

Theatre is a crucial art form to teach students how to relate to the world around them. At Ascension, we value this art form for the many benefits it offers. Students gain confidence, public speaking skills, the ability to work as a team, interview and audition skills, ways to think creatively, and heightened social consciousness.

Bravo, Blue Gators, for another amazing musical production!

CLOSING CONVOCATION

Closing the 2021-2022 school year with Closing Convocation was an incredible celebration of all that happened this year in arts, athletics, and academics.

FOR TEN Years of Service

FOR TWENTY Years of Service

CONGRATULATIONS TO KELLY DUPLANTIS

Recipient of the Melinda Mangham Award

Excellence in teaching is at the heart of this award, but it is about more than just excellence in the classroom. The best teachers approach their vocation with a servant’s heart, and that is certainly true of this year’s recipient, Kelly Duplantis.

She is an exceptional educator who views her role at Ascension as a ministry in which God has called her to love and serve His people. She is gifted in guiding her students each day to grow not only academically but in dignity and character. Her demonstration of diligence, patience, and love within the walls of her classroom is unmatched, and she is aithful to lead her colleagues to grow in their knowledge and walk with the Lord. Truly a humble, unassuming leader who exhibits strength, goodness, and godliness without fail and is loved by everyone who has the privilege of knowing her!

Presenting this award to her, Jeff Plunk said: “Kelly does what she does because she loves it and she wants to impact the kingdom, and she never wants attention or recognition to come her way. As a matter of fact, she will probably be mad at me for selecting her for this honor. But that is ok - I can handle it, and she deserves it!”

FOR THIRTY Years of Service

Kelly teaches 4th grade and as one of our most beloved teachers, completed her 15th year of service to Ascension.

MAY 26, 2022 |

The Melinda Mangham Excellence in Teaching Award is given annually in honor of former Ascension administrator, and lifelong educator, Mrs. Melinda Mangham, who passed away in 2020. The purpose of this award is to to recognize one teacher who exhibits the excellence that Melinda championed during her lifetime. Melinda was an educator at heart, and her love of learning and pushing teachers to be their best permeated everything she did. Melinda loved students. Her students, of course, but, honestly, Melinda loved all students. Melinda believed the best way to change the world was through education, and she knew the way to have the greatest impact on education was to mentor and develop teachers. Melinda poured herself into faculty development and, as such, her impact on students across Acadiana will continue for many years to come.

CONGRATULATION TO MARIKA MURY Recipient of the Gretchen Vincent Service Award

This award is given annually to an Ascension parent(s) who exemplifies the collaborative spirit, commitment to volunteerism, and kindness of Gretchen – all in support of Ascension Episcopal School.

Established after the passing of Gretchen Vincent and her son, Walker, in 2019, the Gretchen Vincent Service Award and Walker Vincent Memorial Scholaship were created to honor the memories of two Blue Gators that left such a significant impact on our community.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOMAS BOND & MADELEINE JUSTUS Recipients of the second Walker Vincent Memorial Scholarship

Walker Vincent truly embodied what it means to be gentle, generous, truthful, kind, and brave. In his honor, the Walker Vincent Memorial Scholarship has been established to recognize two members of the Ascension junior class from this year forward, one boy and one girl who “Live Like Walker.”

Congratulations to Thomas Bond and Madeleine Justus who were awarded 2022 Walker Vincent Memorial Scholarships.

JUNE-JULY 2022 | SUMMER AT ASCENSION

After 15 months of COVID-19 and all of its social distancing and masks, we were ready to ‘make it the best summer yet’!

With 18 camps spanning our 3 campuses over the summer weeks, there was a little something for everyone. Our faculty and staff who offer camps already took summer very seriously with ton of fun and learning intertwined. After a summer of canceled camps and unused camp plans, there were no holds barred for the summer of 2021.

Summer at Ascension can be broken down into 3 categories: specialty themed camps, Larry Sciambra’s FUN Camp, or athletic camps. The specialty themed camps on the preschool campus ranged from Fancy Nancy and American Girl to Wonders of Water and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math). Larry Sciambra has been a faculty member for over 25 years and running Larry Sciambra’s FUN Camp for nearly all of those years. Our athletic camps are hosted and run by varsity coaches and players on and in our athletic facilities. While most take place on our upper school campus in Youngsville, Coach Mouton has transitioned a session of his basketball camp to the Downtown Campus as he feels it draws different campers than the ones who attend the session at the Sugar Mill Pond Campus.

It was certainly a summer to remember filled with smiles and laughter. Thank you to our fabulous faculty who spend a week(s) of their summer to bring joy and entertainment to campers.

JULY 2022 | BOYS & GIRLS STATE

Congratulations and great job to the Blue Gators who participated in the Boys and Girls State Leadership Camp. These young leaders have an interest in government and are proven leaders within their schools.

Kate Jones ‘23, Jackson Lynd ‘23 and Payton Musso ‘23 spent a week of their summer at Northwestern State University and took on government roles such as Governor, Lt. Governor, Councilmembers, Mayors, BESE members, Supreme Court Justices, CFOs, etc. They learned how to write and debate legislative bills and council ordinances. The elected Governor even had to prepare an emergency response for an incoming Category 5 hurricane.

In the fall of 2021, Ochsner Lafayette General Sports Medicine became the official provider of sports medicine for Ascension Episcopal School athletics. In addition to providing us with our own dedicated athletic trainer, our partnership with Ochsner has provided us with exciting opportunities, including partnering with the booster club on new visitor bleachers for our athletic stadium. We are excited about this partnership and look forward to teaming up on ways to continue to strengthen our athletic program at Ascension.

did you see?

NEW GUEST BLEACHERS

The Blue Gator Stadium just got a major upgrade with the addition of new guest bleachers and concrete foundation, thanks to the generous donations from the Booster Club and Ochsner Lafayette General. The new bleachers not only increase the seating capacity of the stadium but also provide a safer and more comfortable experience for our fans, friends, and families of the guest teams..

Since their installation in July of 2022, the bleachers have been used for both soccer and football games, accommodating large crowds of enthusiastic fans.

The Booster Club and Ochsner Lafayette General’s donations have been instrumental in the completion of this project. The Booster Club contribution to this project demonstrates their commitment to enhancing the fan experience at the stadium. Likewise, Ochsner Lafayette General’s involvement in this project shows their commitment to the community and their desire to help promote healthy and active lifestyles.

FINE ARTS ALLIANCE

At Ascension, we make Fine Arts a priority because research shows a direct correlation between cultivating a child’s creativity and that same child achieving success in school.

In short, creative, well-rounded kids become engaged, problem-solving adults, and this is why we are as dedicated to our Fine Arts programs as we are to our academic subjects. So whether your child pursues music, visual arts, photography, videography, or theatre, you can be sure they’ll receive the very best of what we have to offer.

IN LOVING MEMORY

Beverly Melton

November 15, 1933 to April 17, 2022

Beverly began her tenure at Ascension Day School as Director of the Early Learning Center and retired after 30 years as the Assistant Head of School.

A tireless advocate for teachers, students, and institutional learning, Beverly invested decades of her life assuring that high standards and academic rigor were always available to Lafayette families who valued such principles.

She was both a treasure and a pioneer for our school and the community at large. Ascension Episcopal School, then Ascension Day School, is indebted to her for weaving foundational moments into our school’s history.
