An exclusive interview with Viviana Puello the Founder and CEO of the Award-winning Multimedia Platform helping art activists worldwide.

THE ATIM STORY By Paul Simpson 8 | WINTER 2023

www.arttourinternational.com

A

ward-winning artist and activist. Feature filmmaker and director. Honored podcast and television host. Esteemed entrepreneur and business coach. Founder and CEO of ArtTour International, who has expanded the revolutionary platform to encompass print and digital publications, an awardwinning TV show, international events, and so much more. A Top 10 Female Entrepreneur in 2020, as recognized by New York Weekly, whose passion now promotes artists worldwide and serves talented individuals from more than 205 countries. With all of these successes and accolades, you may wonder how Viviana Puello has never graced the pages of the magazine that she brought to life twelve years ago. The answer is quite simple—she always refused previous requests from her artistic peers and staff, instead preferring to keep the focus on talented international artists and their innovative works. Two years ago, we published the ATIM story, and this year we decided to share part of it with updates to celebrate Viviana and Alan's stories of perseverance and triumph. Viviana's childhood in Colombia was far from idyllic. Indeed, growing up, she was set adrift in the turbulent seas of

www.arttourinternational.com

parental abandonment. In the wake of these difficulties, she developed a belief system that limited her horizons. Only at the age of 12, when she ventured upon her first joyous explorations of art, could she finally glimpse ahead the creative powers of possibility. Yet, while the vagaries of fate and the day-today duties would obscure this vision— sometimes for years—Viviana would always return to art. Once she realized that abundance begins only in pursuing what you love, she was finally able to embrace art fully. Viviana ensured that art remained in her life, day in and day out, for ten years, as an independent artist, curator, and Founder of Vivid Arts Network, helping artists exhibit their work in international venues. Pursuing these passions led to a different kind of passion when Viviana met her future partner and husband, Alan Grimandi, while working on an

exhibition in Ferrara, Italy, in October 2009. When arriving from New York to Ferrara, the person who was supposed to pick up Viviana from the airport could not make it; instead asked Alan to do it for her. So the two met at the Bologna airport upon Viviana's arrival, Alan holding Viviana's name on a paper sheet. The love story began, and since then, these two soulmates have been together. And that's how the story of ArtTour International begins. During a flight between venues in 2011, the idea of creating an art magazine suddenly struck Viviana. She immediately marshaled Alan, friends, and fellow artists' support to bring ArtTour International Magazine to life. After a year of work, in December 2011, they released the first issue and began preparations to launch the magazine at the Auditorium al Duomo in Florence.

And launch there it did—at the wrong time and in front of the right people. You see, the day that Viviana arranged to tour the prospective venue happened to coincide with a convention of approximately 500 international cultural figures from more than 30 countries. After asking the responsible, Viviana could secure three minutes to present the magazine project. Within an hour, she began to speak the words that would ensure the foundation of a budding success. This ability to brave potential rejection and practice seasoned flexibility has allowed Viviana to ensure that ATIM is available at Barnes & Noble locations and 1,200 newsstands worldwide

and grow its readership from 1,500 to 2.1 million readers in more than 180 countries. Her cultivated openness to creativity has driven the foundation of ATIM Web TV and The ArtTour International TV Show, which has traveled to more than 50 cities worldwide to support artists and art organizations. Honored with the Olee Public Media Award of Excellence in 2018 and 2019, the show airs every Thursday at 5:30 PM on MNN-HD Spectrum 1993. Moreover, it propelled the stunning documentary "Kintsugi – The Line of Destiny," which features the Berber people's natural livelihood in the Sahara Desert, the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, and the Italian countryside. The film garnered numerous prizes, including "First Time Directors" (Top Shorts Film Festival), "Best Documentary" (New York Film Awards), and "Top Documentary" (Los Angeles Film Awards). Viviana's latest venture, Vivid Arts Elite Circle, originates from her desire to pass on her hard-earned knowledge and experiences.

We share our interview with Viviana to gain further insight into her journey. First of all, thanks for the interview. We've wanted to do this for years, and we finally succeeded! Why have you kept us waiting so long? "My work keeps me busy. . . (laughs)…The truth is that I have a very clear idea about my role in this publication, and that is to promote the art and artists that we bring in each issue; we're here to help them have a voice to share their message. So, I preferred to focus my energy on fulfilling that vision." How do you define yourself? "I'm an artist, writer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and unstoppable manifester dedicated to helping creative entrepreneurs advance their careers, grow their businesses, and scale the ever-competitive international art scene so they can thrive doing what they love." How have these twelve years of ArtTour International been? "It has been quite a joyful ride, and every issue has been a new opportunity for co-creation with an excellent team of collaborators, artists, and readers. It has given me great excitement and pleasure to meet incredible people, from emerging artists to internationally recognized legends. Some have left a strong mark on my heart."

playing my guitar, and singing around the same time. But I do remember the moment I fell in love with painting. During a visit to the convention center in Cartagena, I was sixteen years old and walking in the "Obregon Hall" when I saw a painting by Alejandro Obregon for the first time. The painting. 'Galerna' measures over twenty feet. I remember walking down the hall next to that painting. I could feel my heart racing with each step I took. I felt warmth, magic, and butterflies in my stomach—something I had never experienced. I didn't want the painting to end. I didn't want that feeling to stop. I knew then that I wanted to reproduce and live with that feeling. So art became my drug of choice at that moment." One of the most common questions we hear is this one, so I asked for our readers' curiosity. Where are you from? "I was born and raised in Colombia. Then, at 17, I emigrated to New York, where I grew into adulthood and became a professional. My children were born here, so I have strong roots in the USA. I married my Italian partner twelve years ago, and since then, I have lived in Italy. We have our home in Ferrara. So a piece of my heart is in each of these three countries. We live and work now here in the USA most of the time." What personal challenges have you overcome, and what have you learned from them? "I've experienced my parents' abandonment, which taught me to be resilient. I went through a divorce when was only twenty-two years old. I faced the world alone with my two children. Right after that divorce, I lost everything and experienced being homeless. I learned to practice gratitude every day for what life offers me and you are never alone, the universe has your back." Why do you do what you do? "Because I enjoy it, it makes me happy, and I'm contributing to humanity by amplifying the artists' message. Art unites us in a single truth: that we are all part of a whole. I get up daily thinking whatever I do will contribute to a world where equality, inclusion, love, and peace are the new normal." What's new with ArtTour International this year? "New is our Vivid Arts Network TV Channel which will launch next Spring. We're expanding our reach to bring more exposure to artists worldwide. We plan to include all forms of artistic expression in our programming, including story-telling, cinematography, and visual and performing arts.

Tell us about Alan Grimandi "Alan is the most genuine, transparent, generous, and honest person I know. As a professional, he's committed, goal-oriented, and a super achiever. He is a great filmmaker and storyteller and has the gift to transform video into marvelous imagery that captures your heart. I love his cinematographic work. As a business partner, very supportive. On a personal level, he's my soulmate, and I enjoy every second of this journey with him. We enjoy working together; it's always fun." What is Inspiration to you? "Inspiration is the essence of creation. Inspiration is within us all the time. We can choose to be inspired because Inspiration is being attuned to our divine self in the present moment. We can always make that choice; no external influence has the power to take Inspiration away from us. It is a part of us that is immutable". When did you discover that you wanted to dedicate yourself to art? "I've always been artistic. I started painting at the age of twelve,

We also continue our partnership with Create4Peace and Artists For A Green Planet to celebrate the ARTYA (Artivist of the Year Awards) next Fall and honor Mother Earth. There is much more to reveal, but you must stay tuned to discover it." Any message for our readers? "Be creative, stay inspired. We are not only entitled to live an inspired life – but we are also called upon for the betterment of all humanity, to live a life filled with Inspiration and unleash our full creative potential, to make a difference in the world. Think of yourself as that light that shines in the dark. “Traversing Myth” Oil On Canvas, 48’’x36’’

The natural qualities that animate the Pacific Northwest have filled my life and my imagery since finding a home in Northern Idaho. Its wild beauty has taken me. The wilderness to the west of the Rockies is alive with an idyllic disposition and dramatis personae that invoke an animist sensibility and compels a strong sense of belonging to the earth. I also have been painting to help find personal answers to the troubles brewing beyond my secluded acres of wild land.”

etsyStewartisanAmericancontemporary artist who has defied convention as she charted her path as a painter. Drawing inspiration from her educational background in art history and philosophy and numerous travels and experiences from around the globe, she creates beautiful works that reflect her philosophy. These works are a rendition of personal experiences that incorporate nature, the cosmos, and unseen energies to create vivid imagery. Her paintings are a union of vivid colors and fluid patterns scattered on canvas. They explore microscopic nature's elegant beauty and serenity that eludes our limited human eyes.

BETSY STEWART In many of her series, Stewart examines the unique microscopic ecosystem of shallow pond water, which is a reflection of the uncertainty and fickle nature of human life. Her work shows her keen interest in expounding on the magic of nature and biodiversity. Her artworks tell stories of an environment teeming with life and different forms coexisting perfectly to create an almost magical ecosystem. Her recent "Biocriticals" series suggests a layered interconnectivity that could represent the origins of life in a drop of water or systems in the vast cosmos. As for carving her unique niche as an artist, Stewart has succeeded in being an accomplished artist and a name to reckon with in the art scene.

"Awesome Sloan" is a piece that brings me back to a time many years ago when as a little girl, I felt I could conquer the world. "The Sapient" is a piece that celebrates aging and the wisdom it can bring with it. "Innocence" speaks to me of the pure, clean, unbiased outlook of childhood before the journey through life puts its hooks into us and takes the magic away...painting makes it possible for me to recapture that magic and to express my innermost feelings in a nonverbal way. T

he paintings of French artist Caroline Degroiselle offer color-filled imaginative landscapes inspired by the mystic island she grew up on New Caledonia. Working with bright, vibrant palettes and a variety of textures ranging from simple washes to crusty impastos, Degroiselle creates dynamic compositions that are atmospheric by nature, where the viewer can almost step into the work and experience all the sights, sounds, smells, and other physical elements the painting has to offer. In addition, the artist’s masterful ability to capture and convey the brilliance of the island light brings an entirely new energy to the work so that one almost feels that the painting has come alive.

As she explains so eloquently: “Most of all, the incredible, unbelievable, and everchanging Caledonian light and this fusion with the sea and the lagoon offer me a unique gift and an eternal Inspiration.” “Mes Frissons de Mer” (My Sea Shivers), Acrylic 19.7”x19.7”

In 2016, Christophe completed some logos for significant figures in the music industry — Rihanna & Metallica.

This rendition of the Rihanna logo for the Anti World Tour/VMA is something the general public has come to associate with Death Metal logos mainly because it has been frequently seen on mainstream TV channels like MTV, for example, which attracted new prospects in his clientele. HEART & SOUL THE ART OF CLEO MITCHEL By Emma Gutierrez

Cleo Mitchel is a self-taught, award-winning abstract artist whose work is making a mark in today's art world; she is a talented artist who has a unique germ of pouring out her heart and soul into any work of art she creates. In her paintings, Mitchel uses shapes, colors, forms, and gestural makes to produce its effect rather than attempting to describe a visual reality accurately.

"The Jungle Man"

is to let creativity instinctively lead the way. As a result, spontaneous imagery evolves as the artist naturally creates her works. Most recently, Mitchel's trailblazing efforts in the global art scene were acknowledged when she was among the 60 artists this year to receive the ATIM's Top 60 Masters Awards by ArtTour International Magazine.

"Someone is Always Watching you"

As per the artist, her profound desire is to motivate and inspire her audience to practice freedom, follow their dreams, and follow a path that makes them happy. Cleo Mitchel is one of the upcoming artists to watch in the art industry. She is a force to reckon.

Mitchel's works are creative and phenomenal, exploring concepts of humanity and nature in innovative and compelling artistic ways. In her works, mother nature takes center stage. Mitchel cleverly captures clouds, rainbows, plants, and other natural elements in a distinctive method of playing and mixing colors. As per the artist, "Art is something that makes you breathe with a different kind of happiness," Mitchel uses colors to capture joyful and peaceful moments and express a rich ambiance and happiness. During her creative process, there's no planning or calculation; Mitchel's approach

The artist often develops completely new painting techniques. Abstract shapes and expressive colors determine her paintings. Especially for her last series of works, Dalia Pugatsch developed a new painting technique called blur and dab. Her great artistic role models are Kandinsky, Klee, and Giorgia O'Keeffe. Fifteen years ago, Dalia Pugatsch founded her own art school, «studio for art and design»-- hundreds of art students have been trained by her. Many art exhibitions and picture sales at home and abroad line up Dalia Pugatsch's artistic vita. In 2019 she wrote a book called «Art®evolution.» The book's content, i.e., the critical examination of a part of the art world with the basic thesis «away from the provocation and the superiority of the Artist name toward pure aesthetics and skill,» is miraculously confirmed by the inclusion in this yearbook. “Life Comes Back I” Acrylic,Mixed media on Canvas 90’’x90’’

D

alia Pugatsch (born in 1957 in Zurich) is a passionate artist from Zurich, Switzerland. At a young age, she began to express her life in drawings. She inherited the artistic gift from her mother's side - from her father's side, the intellectual foundation. She has mainly developed her painting knowledge autodidactically. During her artistic career, she also expanded her knowledge of painting with many well-known Swiss artists.

“Life Comes Back XVIII” Acrylic,Mixed media on Canvas 90’’x90’’

"With my paintings, I try to send light into the depths of the human heart- my intention is to touch people. Again and again, I look for the subjective truth of aesthetics. It is wonderful to let my own philosophies of life speak through the mouthpiece of my paintings. The cave-Art series combines several of my interests: art, history, and mysticism. This work mixes 15,000-yearold image fragments from the caves of Lascaux, Chauvet, and Altamira with modern abstract art. “The power of our senses” Acrylic,Mixed media on Canvas 90’’x90’’

However, after a few years as a lawyer, she fully devoted herself to her genuine passion for art. Her preferred painting technique is acrylic with structures and inlays. 34 | WINTER 2023

I search for an art of balance and truth. My sculpture is deeply personal, and in making it, I am aware of "the principle themes of human existence: the otherness of nature, the limitations of language and reason, the demons of personal identity and artistic creation, sex, childhood, and death." I try to see things through "the eyes of a child" while struggling to rouse the "obscure power and penetrating inspiration " that is called the Duende." | kmacklin@xplornet.ca | “Many Worlds”

GRID IMAGES OF NUDES

“I

n this project, I am working with a cell phone camera to create 3 x 3 GRID images which I photographed in a studio model session to create a relationship in time.

I began to make multiple images in a grid in 1967, over fifty years ago, while working on my MFA Thesis in Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There I created different-sized grids. 5 X 5, 8 x 8 and 10 x 10. I created photography organizations based on finding mathematical set theory patterns to fill the grid. At that time, I was aware of an art movement that was interacting with art and science. I was intrigued that I was able to use set theory, and it worked visually. I returned to grids in 1992 when I combined 24 images with the Nimslo Camera. The Nimslo created four stereoscopic half-frame 35 mm negatives when the shutter was released. I contact printed two moments in time on a row, then four more moments in time on two more rows, thus 24 frames. My interest was in creating an image in time. There was a feeling of animation in these images. Later in 1999, I began exploring grids again with the Action Tracker camera. This camera records two images in a moment from a slightly different moment in time. So, I combined two slightly different moments in time (four images) in a row and then three more rows of related action. The final image had 16 images of a related action. In this new project, I am working with a cell phone camera. In a studio session, I am able to shoot 50 to 100 related images of objects or objects and its shadows with a nude model. The spontaneity of working with the cell phone camera enables the relatedness of any of the images to each other.

Working in abstract for me is the most direct and pure form of artistic expression coming from my unconscious. The challenge is to be able to trust and surrender and allow the channel of creativity to come through me like an open vessel. This process, most of the time, is very daring because I want to ensure that the pure essence of child-like energy comes through the body and mind of the adult. ario Campanile’s journey started in Rome, Italy, where he was born on April 21, 1948. Dario expressed an affinity for art as a young boy. When he was 14, the artist was bedridden with a kidney ailment for three months, and his father gave him a set of oil paints to cheer him up. He painted his first still life in just a few days. A self-taught artist, once Campanile had mastered the tools, he was off on a freespirited ride, never quite sure where he was going but always secure in the knowledge that his natural gifts and instincts would take him into exciting new realms. Meetings with Salvador Dali, who coined him the “Roman Master,” and De Chirico influenced his work as a painter. In 1986 Dario was commissioned to redesign and create a new logo for the famed Paramount Pictures. In 2005 Dario was invited to participate in a project called “Missing Peace.” Dario met the Dali Lama at his home in India, where he posed for a portrait exhibited in the project. After decades of painting realism and surrealism, Campanile’s work has evolved into abstract expressionism, the artist’s primary focus and passion.

Painting is a wonderful way of communicating with people. It can be hard to explain everything I feel – and somehow, people seem to understand me by looking at my art and would love this reciprocity to remain forever. A piece of art should never be taken for what it is but for what it expresses. Success is to reach a goal that you focus on. For some artists, the goal is fame, or money, etc.- My target is to provide my family with all their essential needs, doing something that I love. And I do. “A

rt is a universal language. It transcends boundaries. It allows us to communicate, find meaning and experience the world as one. In May 2020, I picked up my first paintbrush to reflect upon the beauty that remained in a world darkened by the pandemic. I thought I had discovered a private way to express myself through painting. But, two months later, my paintings were on exhibit in Europe.

GAYLE PRINTZ

When I began painting, it did not occur to me that sales and international recognition would be part of my artistic experience. Instead, I painted because there were feelings and thoughts, I needed to express without being judged. But, as I opened myself up to the idea of spreading those thoughts by letting them go, the international response was overwhelming. In November 2020, my painting, "COLORS," became part of the permanent exhibit of Le Musée de Peinture de Saint-Frajou in France. Since 2022, I have been one of sixty World Master Artists, and every painting in my modern art portfolio is an international award winner— sharing the 900 international art awards I have earned. My paintings rank among the most sought-after Art Investments in the world's primary and secondary markets. I am fortunate and humbled that the art world feels I have a contribution. The fact that art experts, art collectors, art investors, and art lovers are interested in ensuring I have an artistic future provides all the inspiration I need to continue on this unexpected path. My work has a distinctive style, such that when you see one of my paintings, you will recognize it as a Printz. This may be because I break all the rules and deviate from anything seen in the art world. As I am unaware of the rules, I do not rely on anyone else's style to express my own. And, when there are no rules to follow, the possibilities are endless. Because I paint without boundaries, my works freely cross artistic genres. So many consider the breadth and scope of my work noteworthy. I am frequently asked how I can so freely paint across artistic genres— how I can paint works that range from modernistic, abstract geometric, abstract expressionistic to postImpressionistic, and then go on to create contemporary landscapes and works seemingly influenced by the 19th Century Masters. I can do this because, for me, painting is about exploring freedom of expression in an untraditional way. Transcending barriers by trying different techniques, I lose myself in a painting without fear. I am not afraid to explore where the paint takes me. I paint to discover the unexpected. They say that my "Unrestrained color choices, movement, 3-dimensionality, and defined brushstrokes testify to a ground-breaking style …" which sets my work apart. I am known to blend colors to create smooth transitions, but I have heard it is unusual for each brushstroke to be visible in the final composition. "This approach results in highly expressive artworks, testifying to the artistic freedom with which Printz creates her paintings."

Yet there is more to my work than meets the eye: My paintings somehow change depending upon the angle of your gaze. To me, this makes perfect sense, for as with life, the meaning of my work depends upon the way you look at it. There is great meaning in my artworks, but because I believe the importance of any work of art is based upon the emotion it evokes, I will neither define that meaning nor intrude upon your personal interpretation. I want to give you the uninterrupted freedom to feel and experience the world in unanticipated ways. I leave it to you to draw upon your emotional memories and imagination to assign a context that makes each work meaningful to you. Though I may never tell you the story a painting is meant to suggest, it is only because that story is yours to tell. In most cases, this gives me a distinct advantage because your interpretation of that story is usually much more interesting.

Although my work is not purely abstract, it does create a nonliteral view of the world. It allows me to explore the freedom of expression in an untraditional way. The freedom with which I paint is considered the heart of my uniquely recognizable style. But my goal is to transfer that freedom of expression— freedom to develop your own opinion—to you who, instead of wondering what I thought when I created a painting, must be willing to consider what that piece means to you. I know it can be challenging to get past the distractions inherent in abstract art because the meaning is not as defined as it is in the work of classic painters. But, when you embrace being in an unfamiliar world, richness and tranquility can fill your soul.

JEAN JACQUES PORRET O

riginally from Switzerland, award-winning artist, sculptor, and engineer Jean-Jacques Porret was exposed to art from the day he was born to a family of art and antique collectors. Surrounded by beautiful antiquities, statues, and artwork every day, the seed of art was planted early, and he began carving wood when he was just six years old. He specialized in creating magnificent works with the lost wax technique of casting Bronze. Bronze primarily interested him “because it is the most demanding material which is responsive and sweet to the touch.” After acquiring his engineering degree, Porret came to New York, anxious to learn English and build a life on his terms. There, his career was set into motion, which soon after led him to Chicago. Porret’s thirst for knowledge took him to museums all over the world, absorbing all he could and sharing philosophies with the most prominent artist of the time. As an artist, Porret is continuously evolving, and his work and style have changed over the years. From sharper to a softer expression of molten metal. Porret muses, “If my approach seems figurative, I do not aim for a reproduction of the human form: what interests me is to transmit an abstract feeling or an idea rather than an image of reality. I use recognizable forms to arouse emotion, to give birth to sensations. I consider myself, in fact, an impressionist.” This vision drives his work, and each sculpture imbues depth and intensity.

Though he initially started his career by working in Bronze, Porret began experimenting with various stones. Dissatisfied, with his sculpture’s bases, bought a granite and marble company, to have complete control in his work’s creation. Yet this choice also evolved his work, and these various stone elements have become an integral part of his creative process and vision. Many of his signature pieces with their soft angular movements are harmoniously mixed with sharply defined textures captivating thoughtful designs with an immortal richness, boldness, and unsettling beauty. Porret’s work is infused with his personality, unsuppressed by traditional rules; his work is original and buried within each piece is the poetry of his work. Creating figures of humanity in the abstract, each form courageously melting into the next. Emotions created from fragments of granite or marble jutting and piercing through the bronzes bring the concepts of nature and man together, creating a stunningly modernistic and seductive interpretation of the human form.

# 454 “Reve Nocturne”

# 451 “Promiscuous”

When viewing one of his sculptures, the human form seems to leap out at the viewer. Jean-Jacques describes this movement as “rhythm in space.” Porret said of his artistic method and vision, “I work without any preconceived idea…(I) continue instinctively, with one shape leading to the next, until the figure is simply rhythm in space”. Jean-Jacques Porret’s bronzes can be seen in innumerable collections throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States. He was commissioned to create the bronze sculpture for the American-Swiss Friendship Award. The “Abage Encyclopedia of Bronzes” describes Porret as “an independent thinker, whose bronze sculpture might be described as a naturalistic, modern blend, in which forms are simplified to their essential rhythms and elements.”

like to create art that tells a story—with paint, words, installations, and interactive imagery. I started with pastel and watercolor and often created a painting over a list of words. I called this style "Art of Lists" and did hundreds of them. I then spread my wings and created other styles.

Many of these efforts are installations that normally involve over a dozen pieces that are interconnected. They are sometimes large—"What is Missing," for example, involves 50 hand painted milk cartons. "If the shoe fits" captures a dozen portraits and the shoes associated with them. My latest "Dynamic Duos" shows famous couples like Lucy and Desi, created on 1-inch strips and assembled on zig-zag accordion pleats. From one side, it's Lucy. From the other, it's Desi. Head on, and it makes no sense…so viewers must walk around. But it's fun and interactive…as I aim to do with all my art."

ember of the Institut des Arts Figuratifs, Elected Member of Society of Canadian Artists, Officer of Mondial Art Academia and awarded artist, Josée was born in the sixties in Trois-Rivières, QC, Canada, and was raised by a melomaniac father. While in high school, she took art lessons but finally decided to become a musician. She was, for decades, a professional violinist. Meanwhile, her father was drawing plans for their homes, and watching him gave her some knowledge. She did the same. She learned how to use many tools. Her love for banisters, gables, columns and wood lace-work was growing. She didn't know then she was preparing for her future life as a visual artist.

“L'escalier Des Rencontres” 3d Acrylic glass on Wood, 30’’x30’’

In 2005, she took her first painting class. Then, in 2010, after developing health problems and a bicycle accident, painting while listening to classical music became her new career. In part self-taught, she took workshops with Canadian masters. Since then, she has become another kind of artist.

“Balade Sous Le Chateau” 3d Acrylic glass on Wood, 40’’x30’’

“Mes Petits Bateaux” 3d Acrylic glass n Wood, 30’’x30’’

Mrs. Tellier feels sorry when she sees how hard it is to protect our architecture from a severe climate. For her, painting and preserving memory is paying tribute to our architecture. Her love for beautiful houses brings her to visit historic districts. The uniqueness of her work resides in a technique of lowrelief sculpture with a combination of stained glass. After years of practice, she brought the structured medium to a high technical level. It is carving, modeling, sculpting, sculpting the modeling!!! Working on wood, using various materials, allows her to sculpt the North American architectural heritage that she wants to make joyful using bright colors: a classic approach but rejuvenated by modern materials and a colorful vision of naive tendency.

THE POWER OF THOUGHT

By Viviana Puello

“T

he ability to make thoughts and feelings visible is of the utmost importance in my life. But, over the last few years in particular, I’ve found I can no longer do this with the tools I have, as the news from all over the world crashes into my mind, battling for my attention with all its apparent significance. I am left helpless by this shrill pandemonium, full of disrespect and aggression, and by the unconstrained exploitation of nature. I’m still searching for my responsibility as an artist. It can’t be enough to live in an aesthetic ivory tower. I’m far too quiet with my canvass and my paints”. Katrin Alvarez Award-winning master artist Katrin Alvarez is known for her compelling, dreamlike, surreal paintings that represent the complexity of human situations. Alvarez focuses on the human

figure while introducing multiple references such as objects, animals, etc. to enrich the composition conceptually as well as visually. Katrin Alvarez started as a journalist, going in-depth into the writing profession, but along the way she taught herself the art of painting, influenced and inspired by Michelangelo and Brueghel. Hidden inside each of Katrin Alvarez' paintings is a mood that is impossible to miss, the artist takes her audience on a visual journey as witnesses of people in different stances and circumstances along with elements that make an impact, slowly managing to blend in and propose some radical aesthetic and conceptual ideas.

Alvarez's works are the perfect combination of expressionism and surrealism. Her paintings are troubling and provoking yet soothing, intimate and sensitive yet bizarre, upsetting yet blissful. The compelling and transcendent imagery in her art has a form of teaching, evoking an array of emotions in the viewer. Her masterful use of color and light and skilled knowledge of the human figure allows for perfectly balanced compositions that expand the perceptions of her audience, creating room for each viewer to form different selfinterpretations of the art. “Trauma” Oil on Canvas+Objects, 33.4”x25.5”

believe that artists have an important role to play in changing the patriarchal world we live in. It is becoming increasingly clear that the present patriarchal military, social, political, religious, and economic institutions we live under are no longer workable or sustainable. This is especially true for women who have lived under a patriarchal system created and governed by men for the last 5000 years. In addition, this period also marks the beginning of another important event—the dawn of written language and recorded history in 3100 BC. The confluence of these two events has affected human history to the present time. As a male pro-feminist artist, I believe we are living at a significant turning point in human history. A monumental change is happening regarding the status of women in Western and other societies worldwide. After millenniums of nearly universal patriarchal subjugation, many women now have the chance to visualize themselves in totally new ways and reclaim their inherent birthright. The artist can play an important role in furthering this historical transformation. This is because the artist has the unique ability to create a visual image that can inspire viewers to reinvent themselves. To achieve such a balance, my art tries to restore that part of the pre-historic Mother Goddess culture that honored women for their sacred, life-giving, life-affirming powers: Powers associated with the moon and wild animals; qualities associated with art and aesthetics, dance and music, singing, chanting and ecstatic states of being. As an artist, I wish to create a visual experience that lays the groundwork for a change in attitude—a change that will allow women to feel confident that they have the ability, strength, and resources to take control of their life. Ultimately, this can help us all become more whole and more human".

rt has been in my life since an early age. Drawing was my best subject in elementary school. At eleven years old, I painted my first oil work. My mother was an artist and became my master teacher and inspiration. She painted porcelain and oil on board. My father, a carpenter, sawn masonite building boards for the paintings and made her frames. Her inspiration where her natural surroundings. Art mentors became family, including the artist Knut Gruva, his friend Sven X-e Erixon, and the leading Professor Bror Hjort. My talent often flared out in wild fantasies about sometimes challenging and other times possible projects. Among other things, I was commissioned to paint various posters for the association IOGT. One of these was displayed on all the city's displays and lamp posts. I got my first commission from a school magazine. There were several covers, illustrations, and a series of drawings with my figure, 'Nino,' in several magazine issues. As a teenager, I got to become a student at an advertising and decoration studio. Gradually, I was appointed to be a professional decorator. Then I had the fortune to be employed in the decoration studio in a large department store. The company was known for its decorative art. The studio won many national and international competitions, and I became recognized as one of Sweden's young successful decorators.

“Conductors Brainstorming” Oil on Canvas

I was accepted as a student at Professor Bro Hjort's sculpture school in Uppsala, where I learned different artistic techniques and practiced model painting with the master Bror Hjort himself. I took courses in art, illustration, and typography, which opened new doors to commercial workplaces, including Sweden's largest gramophone company, RCA-Telefunken, and the worldwide graphic industry Esselte/Wezäta AB. Occasionally I worked in Gotenburg as a project manager and organizer in the entertainment industry in collaboration with the Danish ICO. During my spare time, weekends and holidays, I train myself in artistic practice, mostly with drawing, oil painting , and sculptures. In 1995 I moved to Uppsala with my own advertising agency Mediaform AB and built my own family house outside Uppsala. Since 1993 I have worked as a full-time artist in my firm Eldbaage. In 1995 I moved to the beautiful little town Sigtuna, a historic place with ruins from the Viking Age, located between Stockholm and Uppsala, 10 km near Arlanda Airport in Sweden. Over the years, my paintings have been signed differently because I changed my artist's name. Therefore, you can find signatures such as L.Wahlberg, Larz, LRZ, Larz Eldbåge, and international Eldbaage."

contemplations. "While I am a reactionary painter, I begin the process with an idea, theme, or feeling I develop. I often start with simple markmaking and then let the reactionary process takes over. I relish the feeling of moving paint and reacting to what is happening on the canvas and within myself. I add as much color as I take away, creating depth and texture and revealing some underlayers. I often use chalk to draw into the painting, sometimes leaving chunks embedded in the material. I am grateful that I am a self-taught artist. This unrestrained freedom has allowed me to develop my style without standards. I welcome those times when I am entirely lost in the painting. Those uninhibited times will enable my paintings to come alive."

t the age of 12, in school in Lugano, Ticino, the Italianspeaking part of Switzerland, I discovered art as an intimate pleasure and emotional outlet. After that, I chose art to accompany me at UCLA, Los Angeles, California, USA, with an emphasis on personal creativity that suits my intuitive Alla prima painting, letting inspiration surge from deep within me and seizing the spark of the emotion at the origin of an artwork. While living for four years in Rome, among other places in the world (Tunisia, Vienna, Greece, and Geneva, where I settled), I selfstudied the Italian Renaissance masters. I absorbed their mastery of color and composition to transmit meaningfulness to an artwork. In addition, I also studied Giorgio Vasary's first methodology of art studies, which is still a backbone in art schools today.

“P

eople often ask questions about how I got started, how long I have been painting, and where I get my ideas, so I will use this space to try and explain. I've been painting for as long as I can remember. My grandmother was a self-taught painter, and she always had a painting hanging around her house that she was working on. Sometime around the age of five, she encouraged me to join her, and I eagerly jumped in. She taught me how to use the tools and mix the paints, and soon I was creating my own paintings. It's funny; I don't remember ever using crayons or chalk like most kids. I just had my paints, and they seemed to like me. My grandfather taught me about the natural world and the American Indians; his teachings have influenced me my whole life. My mother made sure I got art lessons when I was young. My beautiful wife, Paule, has been by my side with love and understanding all my adult life. Oh, and by the way, she put me through college at The Art Center College of Design. I start every painting with an idea. Whether it's a commissioned painting with a suggested subject or if it's one of my projects, it always begins with an idea. For instance, in "Spirit of the Wave," I was fascinated by the foam patterns created on the face of a wave as though it were a story of the wave itself. Each one was different. What would this wave's story be? The worlds that I've created never existed in reality. I combine animals or people who live together only in my fantasy world. I

create an environment that the viewer finds more interesting the longer they view the painting. They may find things they didn't see the first time they looked at the painting. I spent considerable thought developing a title for the painting because that adds another layer to the viewing experience. For the painting of the tigers, the title "Pride of the Father" could refer to the essential paternal pride of the white tiger, perhaps the excellent stone mountain behind them, or the pride of the Creator for having created such beautiful creatures. I work on large surfaces with tiny brushes. I want people to be almost able to physically pet the horses or shake hands with the riders in "The Rising." Or hear the horses' hooves in "Four Directions, Seven Grandfathers."

When I started painting, I had no idea it would become a driving force. I have no concept of my life without painting. There's a part of my soul in every painting and every brush stroke. Some people say my paintings have a spirituality, which may be true, but not in the traditional way. They see great respect for people and the natural world and how they relate to each other. The American Indians say, 'Mitake oyasin,' 'We are all related.' I like to say we are all painted by the same paintbrush."

ooking at the subject's obvious, close observation and engagement, and then amplifying it with three-dimensional texture and bold color, I push beyond the norm to create an innovation in which the viewer engages with the painting on various levels; a painting, a sculpture, and countless paper wrinkles create complexity and detail— transforming shape and movement into a protruding canvas. Is it a sculpture, or is it a painting? I proclaim it is both. I was never satisfied with the simplicity of a one-dimensional painting, so I considered another element a fundamental concept.

hrough a digital overlay and collage process, award-winning master artist Monika Bendner creates multilayered, surrealistic experiences through a combination of photographic prints and mixed media. Her compositions, printed on various materials, create a narrative that evokes emotions and multiple responses from her viewers. Monika Bendner's work has transformed with a background in photographic design as she's entered different phases of her growth and development as an artist over her active career. Her use of abstract lines and shapes conveys movement in their dimensionality, and her bold, rich, textured application of color emanates meaning through their saturation. bove and beyond all else, I'm an artist. I have always known that creativity & inspiration are part of my life force.

I discovered my artistic and business talents early in elementary school as I sold some of my first works of art at recess for snack money (yes, I did get in trouble for it). After finishing high school in Ontario, I completed a college degree in Religion and a University degree in Psychology. I was encouraged by my family to work in the church. I tried it for a few years but naturally gravitated away from the church into the business and charitable sectors. For most of my working life, I have been a business owner or senior executive in business and non-profit sectors.

WHY ART? "Doing art is a mystical process, a spiritual work, and an exercise of creativity. When I paint, it's as if the veil of ordinary life is momentarily lifted, allowing me to embrace the underlying essence of the universe. My artistic expression is a gift to be shared. Naturally, I am drawn to the mystery implicit in the natural world. I feel more spiritually alive when outside. “Heaven's Point” Acrylic on Board, 12’’x16’’

At every phase of my life, I exercised my creativity. My creative expression flourished when I had a studio space, and when I had no such area, I channeled my creativity into my other endeavors. In 2011, I renewed my commitment to visual art and sharing that particular gift with others. As a result, I have received several international awards of recognition. I am honored to have artwork accepted into the permanent collection at the Government House of British Columbia and The Union Club of British Columbia. After using oil-based paint for many years, I switched to acrylic paint in 1993; currently, it is the sole medium I use.

My art results from sporadic energy surges that percolate past my consciousness. My style hovers between representation and impressionism with a dash of abstraction. I attempt to reach into the fabric of the world, exploring the dynamics of tension and elasticity. Using paint, I create images based on the interplay between darkness and light, the interconnected aura of the natural world." “Silva Bay, Mid-Morning Delight” Acrylic on Canvas, 24’’x30’’

I am thankful for the opportunity to share my talents with those interested and am pleased to have you consider joining me on my journey as a friend. I have operated Central Art Studio & Gallery in downtown Victoria since 2017, where I sell my artworks and those from other Vancouver Island Artists.

hilip Noyed is an innovative multimedia artist known for his Virtual Reality (VR) art, luminous Geometric Illumination light sculptures, kinetic mobiles, videos, 3D paintings and mixed-media public art installations. His art represents the quintessential contemporary art movement using innovative technologies that change how art is experienced today. The images shown here are from the Neo Art Space VR experience where people are immersed in the out-of-this world light art and enjoy a sense of awe, wonder and peace.

104 | WINTER 2023

Neo Art Space is the first galaxy of immersive VR art and features 30 beautiful light experiences – bioluminescent caves, radiantly colorful forests, electric energy fields, aurora borealis skies and geometric light spaces – as well as many interactive art experiences.

geometry of the pyramid, color and music to create a space people go into and find a sense of alignment. Also, there are so many innovations in printing, materials and fabrication to create everything from wall-mounted light sculptures to kinetic mobiles.

"Technological change in the last decade has propelled my art forward in many ways. Virtual Reality allows me to create amazing immersive art experiences. Ironically, the images I make in VR are used to create real-world art, as shown here.

There is expanding knowledge of the power of art to heal. Color, light, and sound are frequencies that affect people emotionally and physiologically. As an artist, I focus on using this understanding to create art that elevates moods to joy and wonder. I strive to make healing art accessible to people of ages and backgrounds." Philip Noyed

I have dedicated my work to keep these issues in the public eye in the hope that attitudes will continue to improve. My work is necessary and I will keep painting until it no longer is. Don't pointless things have a place, too, in this far-from-perfect world? Remove everything pointless from an imperfect life, and it'd lose even its imperfection" (Haruki Murakami, Sputnik Sweetheart)

W

asabi is a Japanese term that refers to an aesthetic view of the world. Literally, it would be ‘the beauty of imperfection,’ so it is usually sought in natural elements and those with an incomplete or impermanent character. Instead of seeking perfect symmetry, one seeks asymmetry, simplicity, and naturalness. Applied to everyday life, this Japanese concept encourages us to seek beauty in life's imperfections, quietly accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay and the uniqueness that represents us. This Japanese term in the age of globalization lends itself well to describing the work of Mumzy and Zoooooz Atelier. Painting, using fractals and color as a propagator of existential phenomena. The essentiality of these works of art lies in the artists' intentions of honesty and truthfulness. Imperfection is a praise of the real, nature as sincere inspiration, and introspection as a means to an eternal end. Art is life, imperfect and whirling. Light as birth, powerful and revelatory. In the artists' paintings, the story of the journey to the center of the world is a journey to our earth."

n my works, poems, and painting, I deal with the future of our vulnerable, warming planet and its social relations. I paint a charming, sad lion, gazelle, or hedgehog, which appears out of chaos but looking carefully, the object is caged and trod upon by my shoe or a car tire.” It is unbelievable that a third world war is threatening us in the third millennium. Millions of immigrants are seeking a safe place. I referred to Picasso’s Guernica and a bleeding dove to remind us of past horrors. A dead naked, bruised woman, head covered with a fig life, fork, and knife beside her, murdered by her husband or one of her brothers. I tilt the paper, and streams of dilute paint cage the objects. Maybe we are caged too. I convey my feelings also in short poems, Civilization Ignoring the elegies of earth. Ignoring the elegies of earth. Suicide

In the excavations of the Anthropocene, the human epoch, under piles of concrete and asphalt in a radiated layer of soil were exposed: Ruins of skyscrapers, missiles, metal and glass boxes, plastic scraps, countless fossils, and tombstones engraved with signals - the toil of intelligent creatures. Did they cut down forests? Did they Pollute the earth and the rivers? Did they not spare their kind? There is no way of knowing. In an eye blink of the planet, all life on its surface was gone. Paint and draw to inspire. I create to leave history, to bring us together as humans dealing with heartache, trials, and victories. I want to leave the person viewing my works better than they came. The most diverse multi-media artist whose spirit-driven process tells the unique stories of his art's inception. Beginning with a blank canvas, the process makes the journey special.

116 | WINTER 2023

Traditionally, creating art and painting a piece starts with a clean slate, a blank white canvas. The crisp and clean palette can accept any color or texture. The same is true for a black canvas. It is just as welcoming and receiving, embracing all colors it's served. The difference is the depth and richness.

“In The Dark, Still I Glow” Mixed Media on Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 36’’x36’’

"I begin the creation of my pieces with a blank black canvas, bringing instant depth and contrast to the art. Then, using a white crayon or pencil, I sketch out what I see in my mind's eye, what has been given to me in a dream or by the spirit of God. My inspirations come from all around me, even from music and movement, to life stories and current events. There is a magic behind each piece's journey from conception to completion that manifests itself at the final destination of the purchaser's wall. Layering elements of fabric, paper, and metal, I will infuse a variety of textures to match the intricate lines of these creations. Creating a painting varies from medium to medium and from individual to individual. My process is as unique as the ability to flow between genres and techniques. When asked what my style is... All of them."

TRACEY CHAYKIN

“M

y name is Tracey Chaykin, and I'm an Award-Winning Colored Pencil Artist from Napa, California. Born and raised in the boroughs of New York City, I've always desired to be creative, even from an early age, with Nature as my main inspiration. My Art is a reflection of the beauty around us, utilizing Hyper-Realism to preserve the subject with creative license/ imagination for the supporting backgrounds. Colored Pencil is my medium of choice, with every new piece providing an opportunity to challenge myself to invent new ways to work with this versatile medium. Some days it's Colored Pencil on its own, sometimes combined with other mediums. Once I choose the subject, I study the subject and consider how to represent best using Colored Pencil and if adding other mediums, such as Gouache, Acrylic Pouring, Metal Leaf, or even Palette Knife painting, will further help the subject come alive. In our day and age, with the increasing effects of Climate Change on environments around the world, I choose to capture moments from the tiniest insects to people. My efforts are not only to preserve but also to participate in conservation efforts. Groups like Artists and Biologists Unite for Nature and Artists for a Green Planet provide the ideal platform with campaigns to achieve these goals; bring a voice to those that can't speak for themselves. The goals are to share the beauty and diversity of our world and that we all deserve a place to live in it. We are all responsible for ensuring our world's survival for future generations and all living on this Planet!

racey Lee Cassin is a multi-award-winning published artist and photographer from the beautiful lakeside community of Rotoma in the Bay of Plenty of New Zealand. Her creative practice is multifaceted as a painter, mixed media artist, writer/blogger, and photographer with works in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, the USA, the United Kingdom, Scotland, and Italy. Her autodidactic practice explores many artistic aspects, particularly the fundamentals of space, shape, and color, using various mediums, including oils, watercolor, ink, printmaking, collage, and acrylics.

My seascapes encapsulate the many layers and beauty found within the ocean's water. The techniques I use in oils create a multidimensional perspective for the viewer that offers a contemporary insight into the movement, power, liquidity, and color of our beloved oceans. Emotions, energy, and spirituality are the catalysts of all my paintwork and photography. There is very little desire for perfection or realism. But an extension of thought via placing an infusion of strength, hope, and courage into what I create. I offer the viewer of my work a portal to those feelings."

The sculptural use of paint with a palette knife and spatula is a personal passion. As an artistic photographer, she has a particular interest in macro, digital manipulation, color manipulation, and the creation of inspirational quotation photography. Her abstract and other contemporary subjects are influenced by the patterns and colors found in nature, the ocean, the human face, lyrics, and poetry. Often hidden symbolism, hearts, numbers, spirals, and faces appear in her work. Sometimes intentional, sometimes not. Contemporary seascapes feature prominently in her body of work, and it is these for which she is most known. Painted in oil or acrylic, they are birds-eye, abstract, or viewed in a contemporary manner of being within the water, looking back to the swell of the waves and horizon. She creates inspirational water images that capture movement and beauty using color, patterns, sand, rock, light, shadow, and sky combinations.

endy Cohen is a Sydney-based artist who has attained a BFA and MFA Degrees. Her art practice focuses on the relationship of colors, shapes, lines, and form with realistic components communicated in a painterly language. By integrating shapes into a cohesive body of colors and forms in conjunction with collage elements, flowing ideas are arbitrarily manifested that bring the viewer's attention to the brushstrokes, mark-making, and materiality on the surface of each painting. However, the primary focus of Artist Wendy Cohen's practice is to invite the viewer to enjoy each painting as she transforms the static space of each painting with synchronized contrasting colors highlighting its vibrant chemistry and resonance.
