"While I am a reactionary painter, I begin the process with an idea, theme, or feeling I develop. I often start with simple markmaking and then let the reactionary process takes over. I relish the feeling of moving paint and reacting to what is happening on the canvas and within myself. I add as much color as I take away, creating depth and texture and revealing some underlayers. I often use chalk to draw into the painting, sometimes leaving chunks embedded in the material.
I am grateful that I am a self-taught artist. This unrestrained freedom has allowed me to develop my style without standards. I welcome those times when I am entirely lost in the painting. Those uninhibited times will enable my paintings to come alive."
