Meet the Cover Artist: Jason M. Lois

About the Cover Art

"A woman sits in a dimly lit bar, her eyes fixed on an empty chair that once held her beloved," says Jason Lois of the story unfolding across this issue's cover. "Her heart aches with the memory of his presence, now just a haunting absence. She visualizes him there, sipping his favorite bourbon, surrounded by his favorite piece of art. The bar, once a place of joy and companionship, now serves as a bittersweet reminder of the love lost. Through her gaze, the painting captures the depth of her sorrow and the enduring bond of a love that lingers, even in his absence. This front cover is her in sorrow, peering at her beloved's favorite place without him. The back cover is the faint memory of him sipping his bourbon in that same place. It's a love story filled with art and bourbon. I hope you like it."

What else is Jason up to these days?

“Urban Dissolve is a series and partnership between myself and Eddie Donaldson," he says. "A sophisticated, complex, and highly cultivated fusion of my creative mind and artistry. The essence of street art is elevated to a more refined and upscale expression. It conjures an image of the cityscape breaking down and transforming into something new. It suggests a dynamic fusion of urban elements, where traditional boundaries blur and dissolve into a vibrant tapestry of color and form. This name encapsulates the essence of art, style, and a sense of constant evolution. Each piece under the theme of Urban Dissolve could explore the ever-changing nature of urban life and the beauty found within its decay and renewal."

Blending Traditions: 'Bourbon, Ballet, and Benz' Merges Fine Arts with Fine Spirits

Bourbon with Heart, in a unique collaboration with the Louisville Ballet and Mercedes-Benz of Louisville, unveiled Bourbon, Ballet, and Benz, its seventh exhibit since its inception in 2022. Founder Morgan Hancock organized a collection of expertly hand-painted ballet pointe shoes and bourbon bottles by 21 area artists.

“I created Bourbon with Heart as a sanctuary where everyone, from all walks of life, feels appreciated and valued—a place that celebrates Kentucky not just for its bourbon but as a beacon of creativity and generosity,” said Hancock. “Through these exhibits, we have built a community that cares deeply for one another, creating a space where art, like a fine bourbon, brings people together, fosters self-expression, and showcases the rich tapestry of our city's diversity. It has been a privilege and an honor to lead this mission.”

After receiving more than 100 artists' submissions, 21 artists were selected, each bringing their unique artistic styles and diverse backgrounds, ranging from an art teacher to a ballet dancer and an operating room nurse. The artists donated their work to Bourbon with Heart, including a one-of-a-kind hand-painted 150th Kentucky Derby-themed Weller bottle that was auctioned off to the public, with a portion of all proceeds from the exhibit going to Louisville Ballet, to support the world-class arts experiences they make accessible to everyone.

“Louisville Ballet was honored to collaborate with Bourbon with Heart on this unique exhibit,” said Leslie Smart, CEO. “We were grateful to work alongside an organization that passionately champions the arts and inclusivity.”

General Manager of Mercedes-Benz of Louisville, Miller Warren, stated, “We were thrilled to partner with Bourbon with Heart for this exhibit. The craftsmanship of bourbon and the elegance of ballet paired perfectly with the Mercedes-Benz brand. Our vehicles are world-renowned for their craftsmanship and elegance, and this partnership reinforced our commitment to enriching our community through the arts and celebrating the talent within our city.”

In the following pages, you will meet the 21 artists who brought this visionary exhibit to life.

Susanna Bard

Melissa Mann Bean

Susanna Bard is a painter, textile artist, knitter, and cook. "As long as I'm creating, I'm a happy girl," she says. An art director, photographer, and mixed-media artist in the creative field for over 25 years, Melissa Mann Bean incorporates old books into her work. A wife and mom to two kids, a dalmatian, and chickens in Schnitzelburg, she loves the history of this community and expresses it in her work.

Kellene Turner

Elements of art nouveau and structural elegance combined with the state's rich culture and strength define this work from Kellene Turner. "Nostalgia, expression, culture, and imagination," she reflects. "Artistry for everyday and extraordinary circumstances, ultimately becoming an integral part of our existence."

Kaitlin Hennessy

Art has always came naturally as a way of expression for Kaitlin Hennessy. She spilts her time between original paintings created in the studio, and painting at live events. She enjoys using her creative voice to express emotion and connect with her subjects. Most days you can find her with the helpful golden paws of her four legged assistant, Tito, in the studio creating.

Jason Lois

Jason Lois' creative philosophy seamlessly flows. "My work emanates from the depths of my heart,” he says. “I invest my essence into every piece, drawing inspiration from my past and present experiences. By infusing myself into these creations, I aim for people to derive meaning and carry it with them—to connect."

Sandra Smith

Shauntrice Martin

Sandy Smith has recently re-booted her love of Art. "Celebrate! A theme common to Bourbon, Benz, and Ballet is that they all require attention to beauty and detail before all of us can enjoy the result of the artist's hard work," she says. "I celebrate the years of dedication and experience imbued in each of these art forms."

Chahta Noir (AKA Shauntrice) is a multimedia artist and the founder of OKIKE. Known for her exploration of her African and Indigenous traditions, she was the inaugural Speed Art Museum Artist-In-Residence and a Great Meadows Foundation curatorial grantee.

Kandace Tatum Potter

Kandace Tatum Potter is a practicing artist and secondary visual art teacher. She creates vibrant acrylic and oil pieces focusing on the color play within a broad range of subject matter from landscapes to abstract creations.

Morgan Ruth

"This piece acts as a character study for the secondary antagonist in Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake," says Morgan Ruth. "She is the Black Swan that is cursed just the same as Odette, the White Swan protagonist. Through color psychology, we can contemplate her nature and circumstance, thus humanizing her through artistic expression."

Dean Southworth

I have been painting, drawing, and creating art for over 50 years," says Dean Southworth of his creative journey. Here, he presents the simple elegance and lasting classic design of an L&N Engine Shed, an eternal symbol of the rails that made America. "I enjoy the process as much as the final piece."

Kayla Morgan

Payton Thomas

“My work is influenced and inspired by the traditions of Kentucky,” says Payton Thomas, who started seriously painting in 2018. “In this piece, I used a pallet knife and applied the same technique as one of my bourbon paintings. The goal was to imagine if one of my paintings came to life.”

Madeline Flynn

Madeline Flynn loves to make things pretty. "These stamps are love letters to the endless pursuit of perfection in both arts," she says. Madeline creates hand-drawn wedding and party invitations, but also enjoys painting bottles and mixed media pieces. She works full-time in Communications and spends her spare time outside, with her dog, or on her side biz.

Ashya Denise

Cheryle Walton

Cheryle Walton is a Lexington, Kentucky artist. She picked up art as a child from her mother who was also an artist. The technique of her style is taking an acrylic color image base and covering it with black watercolor. It’s then removed to create the texture you see.

Ashya Denise is known by her brand ADW, the initials of her name. She believes in the power of her talent and expresses her voice through acrylic strokes on canvas. Ashya is passionate about her art journey and only hopes it is an inspiration to others.

Legacy and Innovation: Taylor J Morley Crafts Award-Winning Spirits at Red Line Whiskey Company

Photos: Courtesy Photos

For Taylor J Morley, working in the spirit industry is a family tradition. While he never received any traditional training on whiskey or blending, everything he's learned came from experience and knowledge gained growing up around winemakers and wineries and traveling the globe with his father. "My dad has been in liquor my whole life," He says. "He started in restaurants in New York City and then worked as an importer. So, I grew up in the industry, but wine was more my dad's thing. Bourbon was always mine. I love spirits in general, but bourbon is my thing."

Taylor is the Founder and Master Blender of Red Line Whiskey Company. Starting this company with his dad in 2021, Red Line brings a new and unique take on a timeless spirit. The Morleys use their combined acumen to create an award winning product; Red Line's whiskey earned the Double Gold Medal at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition, along with winning Gold and Platinum Best in Class at the Sip Awards in 2022.

"We have a strong focus on quality," says Taylor. "That can have a wide range of meanings, but for us, it's all about going the distance to place extra effort in everything that we do, from the barrels we use through to every single element that places that bottle in front of you. Since this has always been a huge passion of mine, I don't let any part of it slide. The journey of Red Line Whiskey Company is not just about creating exceptional whiskey; it's about crafting an experience that resonates with enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike."

From the selection of ingredients to the meticulous blending process, every aspect of Red Line's production is infused with Taylor's expertise and devotion to the craft. The result is a portfolio of spirits that not only reflects the rich heritage of bourbon but also pushes the boundaries of flavor and quality. Taylor's dedication to quality and his passion for bourbon has been instrumental in establishing Red Line Whiskey Company as a standout in the industry. With a commitment to excellence, a deep understanding of spirits, and a vision for the future, Taylor is poised to significantly impact the world of whiskey.

“We have a strong focus on quality, it's all about going the distance to place extra effort in everything that we do, from the barrels we use through to every single element that places that bottle in front of you.”

Toni Boer: Pioneering Short-Term Rentals Along Kentucky's Bourbon Trail

Photos: Courtesy Photos

Amidst the burgeoning interests of tourism and real estate in Kentucky, driven by its affordable market, equestrian epicenter, and the Bourbon ka-boom, Toni Boer occupies a unique position. She is a dedicated short term rental (STR) real estate specific agent, the only one in the area focusing on the expansive 100+-mile stretch of the Bourbon Trail to Mammoth Cave area in Central Kentucky. Her exceptional performance, expertise, and consistently ranking in the top 5% of all agents in the region are a testament to her love of the industry. Notably, she is not just an agent but also an investor, STR property manager, and two time author. She's devoted to helping local communities find solutions and understanding how short-term rentals can add value and embrace tourism and the guests coming to experience the Commonwealth.

"I fell in love with short term real estate in 2019, so much so that I gave up traditional real estate in 2021," says Toni. "I feel that what I contribute with STR real estate better serves my clients. Helping investors discover an affordable yet profitable market to invest in and working alongside new and seasoned investors in an emerging market has been wonderful!”

STR’s are often misunderstood by the general public, and Toni has been a great advocate for the industry. Her unique skill set and acumen allow her to work exceptionally well with tourism directors, government representatives, and industry professionals and to have a unique perspective and understanding of the growth and value intrinsic to our area. "I know the guest avatar well," she observes. "Tourists travel to Red River Gorge, Mammoth Cave, and the Bourbon Trail for obvious reasons, but I also find people coming for business, weddings, outdoor enthusiasts and other area attractions. Various events are happening year round in Central Kentucky that attract many kinds of visitors, making it a sort of midwest Mecca getting widely recognized. The Kentucky Department of Tourism shows that a median of visitors make over $100,000 in income, are over 40, are here to explore not just for pleasure but for business and over 2 billion dollars is spent a year in lodging alone!”

A sought-after agent, Toni remains humble. "This industry has been very good to me," she says. "It has provided a lot for my family, and I am very grateful. Understanding tourism and seeing the growth is very gratifying!”

A Toast to Tradition: Old Louisville Whiskey Co. Celebrates Family Legacy and Local Heritage

It all started with a husband-and-wife duo, Amine and Beth Karaoud, who have a passion for whiskey and a love for their historic Louisville neighborhood. After selling several properties in the area including the local favorite, Red Castle Liquors, the Karaouds decided to invest their money into starting their very own Kentucky whiskey company.

The Old Louisville Whiskey Co. is much more than just a bourbon brand—it’s a labor of love for Amine and Beth Karaoud. These self-proclaimed “whiskey aficionados'' have put their heart and soul into creating a product that honors both the rich history of the Old Louisville neighborhood as well as the long-standing tradition of Kentucky bourbon making.

They wanted to honor the Old Louisville neighborhood - known for its gorgeous Victorian mansions - with a whiskey brand that would celebrate tradition and history. And that's exactly what they did.

"Old Louisville is really where we learned the trade of whiskey and gained our bourbon knowledge," said Amine Karaoud. "Much like the neighborhood, we wanted to release a whiskey that was aged properly. It took patience, but it has been well worth it."

A perfect example of their commitment to quality over quantity is evident in the care that goes into each bottle of their small-batch bourbon. They use only premium spirit and age their whiskey for a minimum of 7 years before bottling it by hand.

Each bottle is truly a work of art - as unique as the historic neighborhood it pays tribute to.

When you take a sip of Old Louisville Whiskey Co. bourbon, you're not just enjoying a great drink. You're also honoring tradition, history, and family. That's something we can all raise our glass to!

Capturing the Soul: Best Dad Media's Journey from Passion to Visual Storytelling

Photos: Courtesy Photos

"Through the powerful mediums of video and photography, we strive to tell stories that truly matter," passionately declares Kyle Gordon. "I firmly believe that every individual and every object has a unique narrative to share with the world. My role is to help them discover and express that special story." With this unwavering belief, Kyle and his partner, Amanda, have painstakingly built Best Dad Media from the ground up, a testament to their steadfast dedication and passion.

"About five years ago, I found myself in a position where I had to start over from scratch," Kyle recalls. "It seemed like the thing to do was pursue my dreams." He had been in videography for eight years and pressed ahead with that work, focusing on church functions and weddings but gradually branching out. Everywhere he went, he happened to wear a hat that reads "BEST DAD" across the top. "Sometimes, I feel like people think that I'm trying to say I'm a better dad than every other father on earth," Kyle says with a laugh. "But that's not it. It's really a reminder to always be the best I can be for my own kids." A pivotal moment came when Kyle made a popular video for a local rapper. "She tagged me as 'Best Dad,' and it caught on from there. I became synonymous with that, and I leaned right into it. I had been branding myself all that time and didn't realize it!"

"Kyle shows such a great attention to detail," says Amanda. "He's very engaging. He pulls the emotions from people and captures what they're all about. He's so focused and detail-oriented." Kyle credits Amanda as the key to his success, providing important balance and business sense so that he can focus on utilizing his creativity, and they are equal partners at home and at work.

With their studio doors opened in October, Kyle and Amanda are already envisioning a second location in the near future. Their sights are set on Louisville's burgeoning photography scene, with a mission to foster its growth in a sustainable manner. "Our goal is to provide aspiring photographers not just with a workspace, but with real, hands-on support," shares Kyle, painting a picture of a future where creativity and entrepreneurship thrive.

From Medical Professional to Master Painter: Marty Osbourn O'Daniel Discovers Art as a Lifeline and Language

"When I'm in the mode of creating, nothing can distract me," says Marty Osbourn O'Daniel. "And I'm usually a very distractable person. Putting everything into my work and letting it take me where it will is an awesome feeling. I can allow the brush to become the boss, and that's so exciting. I can trust it. How many places in life can we lean into our most impulsive actions? I can say things through the work that I cannot say in words. It's become my favorite way to communicate."

A devoted wife, mother, and medical professional, it was this love of creation that granted Marty a deeply valuable outlet. "I had an exciting, challenging, stressful career," she says. "I was always creative, doing things like painting furniture, interior decorating, and crafting with my kids. But then, in 2017, at 49 years of age, there was a piece of furniture project I was working on in which the painting aspect was a bit tricky. I went to a workshop with an artist teaching the technique in her paintings, and it unlocked so much for me. It was like I learned this secret about myself. I discovered that I could paint on canvas and developed this passion. That became a lifeline for me in my career."

This would hold especially true three years later, with the stress of the COVID-19 age. "It was such a tough time," Marty recalls. "Art was my lifeline and my therapy. I could shut my brain down after long, hard days and just get lost, escape, and find focus on what was in front of me." Now, she's retiring from her former career and focusing on art, with big things on the way: The Blanton Bourbon Brand President and GM has hired her to create a special project.

"Art came to me late in life," she says. "I wish I had known I was an artist earlier, but all the things that happened in my life to bring me to that moment, I wonder if I would have had the mental capacity. I have to feel like it came when it was supposed to, and I'm so glad that my husband encourages and supports me. He's my biggest fan. Through painting, I reinvented myself, and I hope to inspire others to try new things because you never know what passions might be discovered."

Daphne's Artistic Journey: Classroom to Cultural Influencer

There’s something about Daphne.

With a creative home led by a graphic designer father and an educator for a mother, Daphne was bound to be an artist. She grew up loving art, but it was difficult for her to imagine being a full-time creative.

“I never really thought of myself as an artist, even though I was always creating.”

Once she started art classes at JCTC, though, she knew it was the right place.

In 2016, her art earned several American Ad Federation awards: two silvers, two golds, and judge’s choice awards for digital art. When asked about her biggest influences, the family was first followed by the Black women in her life: Dr. Jabani Bennett—a Black feminist mixed media artist, culture curator Ashlee Phillips who hired art teachers at Southwick community center, and Mahogany (creator of The Sis That Journals) who hired Daphne to teach workshops at the Speed Art Museum.

“They are so creative and free”.

Daphne was recently selected as a featured artist for the inaugural Black Future Fest. She also designed the 2024 branding materials for the Louisville Urban League’s Derby Gala.

Expansion is on her mind. Daphne aspires to be a tattoo artist. Eventually, she aims to build an arts center that offers creatives a space to build their craft. In her own words, “I am in the process of fully embracing myself as an artist”

You can Follow Daphne on Instagram at @ BlackWildFlower and check out her work at the Black Future Fest on Saturday, August 3rd, at the California Community Center.

Chad Smith: Young Visionary Blends Artistic Passion with Community Dreams

Chad Smith is an impressive young man. He began speaking to senators at the state capital when he was in third grade. Since then, he has attended a number of art shows and dabbled in the arts: piano at AMPED, painting at Play Cousins Collective, and recently, a little photography.

"The first famous artist I ever met was Ms. Jaylin. She invited us to an artist dinner, and she told me I'm a real artist."

If you ask him what he wants to be when he grows up, Chad will proudly tell you he is looking forward to becoming a lawyer so he can help people. He loves art because he can draw what's on his mind. Things like wavy oceans, shapes, and nature capture his attention. He enjoys visiting the Speed Museum and filling up his sketchbook in his free time.

This fall, Chad will finish his last year of elementary school. He is looking forward to learning more about how he can use art to improve the community.

Isabella Corine: Unveiling Unique Artistry and Finding Equilibrium in Creativity

"So much effort goes into an artist's work," says Isabella Corine. "It's very meaningful to the artist. I could realistically work any job to make money, but my art is the one thing that couldn't be done the same by anyone else. Each piece takes countless hours and is always inspired by something important to me."

Art has always come naturally and has been integral to Isabella's life. Growing up in a log cabin in the woods of Southern Indiana, Isabella's earliest mediums were mud and Play-Doh, making surprisingly complex sculptures before she leaned into drawing and painting. "When it comes to art, I've always been able to do things that I shouldn't be able to do," she says. "I thought of it as genetic, as my dad can draw, but I didn't grow up around people who think of themselves as artists. It kept me from seeing the value in it."

Everything changed for Isabella in 2020. "I became close to people involved in the protests over what happened to Breona Taylor. There was a visual tribute at Jefferson Square that was suddenly destroyed and needed to be quickly replaced," she recalls. "I did a painting of her in an hour. I saw how much that meant to people, including Breonna's mother. The emotional impact of that moment was profound. I decided then and there that I needed to pursue my creativity, even if it sounded silly. I had been going to school, working at a hotel, going to the gym, and thinking of life in terms that the most important things are education, money, physical shape, and trying to be a good person- whatever that really means...But being present at that moment in 2020 brought purpose, a sense of connection, and a kind of perspective on who people are inside that changed everything."

Isabella has since embarked on a new artistic venture: her show, Equilibrium, which also features her talented friends in various creative fields for a multimedia experience unlike any other. She's pursuing commercial art but doing so on her terms, finding the nexus points where her unique sense of expression can reach a broader audience. "Advertising and art can go hand in hand," she explains, "it's all in understanding the process. If you can craft an image, you can craft a story. When I'm painting, everything makes perfect sense to me."

Crafting Connections: How Bob VanBruggen's Woodworking Brings Art and Community Together

From a simple act born out of necessity, Bob VanBruggen rediscovered a skill long forgotten and ignited a passion to create. "I had done some woodworking in high school but hadn't done anything with it for a long time," he recalls. "But then, thirty years ago, my granddaughter was born with certain congenital disabilities that left her blind. As she got up a little older, my son asked if I could make her a table and chair where she could sit and learn brail. I did that, and as I built those things, I really enjoyed it. I decided to embrace it and take on woodwork as a retirement hobby."

Mr. VanBruggen mostly made furniture until seven years ago, when he began crafting various types of wooden art of subjects like the Holy Family and Secretariat. "I gravitated to a kind of artistic woodwork called intarsia," he says. That's the art of creating mosaic-like pictures from pieces of wood. Mr. VanBruggen especially likes to add dimensional effects, bringing images to life. "I enjoy taking tiny pieces of wood, often just scrap, and making them into new shapes. It's just a lot of fun to do. You must let the wood speak for itself. You see knots, and sometimes you try to avoid them or make them part of the plan, but sometimes, you have to let it be. The wood speaks for itself. Woodworking is both a craft and an art. A craftsman must be an artist, and vice versa."

Mr. VanBruggen lives at Treyton Oak Towers with his wife, Joyce. "the place looks simple from the outside, but it's well furnished and pretty inside. It makes you feel at home," he says. "It's a continuous care community with self-reliance through to assisted living with skilled nurses as we come to need that, so I know I can stay here. They help people to be independent." Mr. VanBruggen gives high marks to the great dining and tremendous amount of activities at Treyton Oak Towers, not least of which is the ability to do woodworking on site, thanks to a special space on the premises. Mr. VanBruggen built a bar in Treyton’s lounge over Covid, and has been kind enough to donate all his tools to keep woodworking a part of residents’ lives for years to come.

"I take tremendous satisfaction from seeing other residents' enjoyment," Mr. VanBruggen says, "both of the things I made and from getting to make things, as well."

"I enjoy taking tiny pieces of wood, often just scrap, and making them into new shapes. It's just a lot of fun to do. You must let the wood speak for itself."

Lt. Colonel Mary Clark: Harnessing the Healing Power of Art in Retirement

"Art is for me," says Lt.Colonel Mary Clark. "It allows me to show my creativity. All the chatter in my mind goes away, and I'm able to focus in a way that is so important."

Lt. Colonel Mary always had an eye for art, but it became a true pastime and passion for her after retirement. "I knew it would be good for my mental health as I became a senior," she says. "As well as being a way that I can express myself. I do love being able to relax at this stage of my life, but also to maintain my mental health as I become a senior. Art gives me that." Working in oil on canvas in all sizes, she takes on a vast array of subjects. "I make all types of pictures," She says. "I really have no preference. But I do tend towards things like plants and flowers, as well as birds. I like earthy paintings. I'm always attempting to bring perspective. I am doing this for myself, but it's so great for others to appreciate the work and be touched. There can be real back and forth communication in paintings, and because of that, I can never afford to be selfish."

Lt. Colonel Mary resides at Treyton Oak Towers, where her art hangs on several walls for her neighbors to see and appreciate, both in her apartment and around the building. She enjoys the opportunity to share her passion with others and to see the impact her art has on people. "It was a great choice to come there," she says. "The timing was perfect for me. They offer all levels of care, so I can stay in this building no matter what I might need." As she continues to create and inspire, Lt. Colonel Mary is grateful for the role that art plays in her life and the lives of those around her. She believes in the healing power of art and enjoys helping others discover their own creative potential. She finds everything she needs to create right there in the art studio on the premises. "There's a spiritual feeling in the studio. It's always nice and quiet, and I can be in touch with me, myself, and I. It's in that human perspective that creativity sparks."

Exploring the Surreal with Jennifer Pate of Maridad Studio

In the bustling artistic hub of Austin, TX, Jennifer Pate, the creative force behind Maridad Studio, is redefining figurative art with a blend of whimsy and introspection. Her illustrations delve into the uncanny and imaginative aspects of everyday life, transforming the mundane into the extraordinary.

Jennifer's work is deeply influenced by Austin's vibrant culture—its diverse culinary scene, artisanal cocktails, and the city's overall spirit of exploration resonate throughout her art. These elements provide a rich tapestry of inspiration that she weaves into each piece she creates.

As a Hispanic Queer female, Jennifer uses her personal journey and identity to challenge and expand traditional narratives around identity. Her artwork serves as a surreal exploration of self and society, questioning and stretching the boundaries traditionally imposed by these labels.

Her artistic journey began in 2017 as a personal meditation on temptation, but has since blossomed into a comprehensive series. Today, Jennifer's work is celebrated for its dynamic figure drawing, and its nuanced exploration of movement, body language, and themes such as health and sexuality.

Through Maridad Studio, Jennifer Pate continues to push the limits of figurative illustration, inviting viewers to step into a world where the familiar becomes wonderfully strange, and every creation is a doorway to deeper understanding.

Harnessing the Sun: Billy Keith's Journey into the Art of Solar Combustion

Watching Billy Keith create is an experience in and of itself. "I see it as spiritually plugging into the sun and making a sacred space," he says. Using an 18-inch Fresnel lens as his brush, Billy harnesses the pure power of sunlight to scorch images into wood. It's been called several things, but to Billy, it's "solar combustion art." It's a medium in which few work and an approach that is entirely unique to him, utilizing an extemporaneous mindset, letting the muse take him where it will as he makes shapes that he refers to as sacred geometry. "I work in a spontaneous moment of existence," Billy says. "I'm barely in charge of myself as a human being. I float like a balloon and make art."

Even while holding on loosely, Billy's life is driven by a sense of purpose in a way it was not before a pivotal morning in 2010. After a night at the bar, Billy awoke at home with zero recollection of how he got there. Realizing the wildly dangerous implications of this behavior, he resolved to stop drinking. "Art gives me a sense of purpose," he says. "I believe we're all placed here to do things and that I was saved to make what I make. I've dedicated myself to this. I often feel like I'm receiving information that I'm not always entirely conscious of, and this is how it comes out so that it can engage with other people."

Towards that end, Billy and his wife, Michele, opened the Sun Shop. That's where Billy not only sells his work but also makes it. He can be found out front, engaging with passersby as they come, granting them a sense of discovery and witnessing realtime, literal creative sparks. "Discovering this happening is a real equalizer for most people because few know this is a thing you can do. It's like, 'What the heck is going on?!?'" I sell some of my work, horde some, some I hold as special until I find the time, place, and person to let it go towards. There have been many coincidences and characters I've encountered along the way that have brought me to where I am as I make these one-of-akind snapshots in an unlikely sort of way. I lean into that."

Art in the Winner's Circle: Hand-Painted Dress Wins Derby Fashion Contest

The Kentucky Derby isn't just the world's most famous horse race; it's also a major highlight in the world of fashion! This year, Louisville's own artist, Clay Mata, captured the spotlight with her breathtaking hand-painted dress design, clinching the 2024 Kentucky Derby Experience Fashion contest win. Worn by Arts & Spirits Magazine's editor, Morgan Hancock, the dress featured a playful avant-garde/street artist style. It seamlessly incorporated classic Derby symbols such as the twin spires, the pink lily, the horse and jockey, and even a dollar sign for good luck (which must have worked)!

Of course, no Derby outfit is complete without a hat. This ensemble was perfectly paired with a custom hat designed by the incredible Mad Hatter 502 and subsequently hand-painted by Clay.

Having grown up on the backside of Churchill Downs, Clay's childhood connection to the racetrack imbued her creations with authenticity and a compelling personal narrative. Her design not only enchanted the local audience but also captured the attention of national figures, garnering accolades from fashion industry leaders.

The esteemed panel of judges—Zanna Roberts Rassi, founder of Milk Makeup; Damien Broderick, fashion influencer; Formé Millinery, renowned milliner; and Dylan Dreyer, NBC host—all applauded the distinctive artistry in Clay and Mad Hatter 502's work, further validating their talent and creativity.

As we reflect on a fabulous Derby weekend, let's continue to support and celebrate the incredible artists among us.

Introducing the "Shadow of Gojira," a cocktail that captures the essence of the legendary kaiju and immerses you in its world. Imagine yourself amidst the aftermath of a monster's rampage, with hints of smokey oak and citrus wafting through the air, accompanied by subtle spices and seasoning reminiscent of the ashy urban jungle's heart.

At its core, this cocktail features a bold 96-proof 15-year Japanese malt whisky, embodying the strength and depth of the king of monsters. To balance its potency, dark Japanese knotwood honey lends a raw sweetness that harmonizes with the tartness of yuzu and blood orange. The inclusion of sweet vermouth and Suze further enhances the complexity of flavors, adding floral and herbal notes with restrained bitterness.

For those seeking a less adventurous experience, the cocktail can be enjoyed without the blue agave, maple, wagyu tallow, and pepper rim. However, for the full immersive experience, sipping from the rimmed side offers a tantalizing journey through sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and buttery umami flavors, creating a truly memorable taste sensation. This versatility ensures that every palate is catered to, from the daring to the more reserved.

To complement the drink, sweetened dried blood orange slices provide a refreshing contrast, while ube cookies with yuzu drizzle add a hint of acidity and earthiness, grounding this intense experience in a harmonious balance of flavors.

Whether you brave the full force of the "Shadow of Gojira" or opt for a more subdued sip, this cocktail promises an unforgettable journey through the ruins of the urban jungle, leaving you with a sense of relief and a story to tell.
