19 – 29 OCTOBER

Journeys Festival International Portsmouth 19 – 29 October 2017 “ Produced by ArtReach, Journeys Festival International invites you to explore ten days of creative events taking place across the island city of Portsmouth. The Festival celebrates the artistic talents of exceptional refugee and asylum seeker artists and explores work that shares the refugee experience. Journeys Festival International works closely with a portfolio of key partners, from frontline refugee and asylum seeker charities and advocacy groups, to cultural organisations and leading arts venues. Our partners have fully supported the Festival’s inception in Portsmouth and its development to enable it to flourish within the city’s cultural scene – The JFI Team extend a big thank you to all. The Festival presents international work such as the Aakash Odedra Company’s latest contemporary dance piece #JeSuis (In Progress) at New Theatre Royal on 21 October. It offers a range of exciting cultural events, including Look Up (pg. 6 – 7), the large-scale outdoor art gallery exhibited on buildings around the city. Join us for a Coffee Shop Conversation (pg. 5) where there is an opportunity to meet exceptional artists and to hear from those involved in front-line support for refugees and asylum seekers. There are workshops, live music for all and a new project, Journeys to Portsmouth that will produce an oral story telling exhibition, collating and archiving the experiences of established migrants in the city and their experiences of home, belonging and of Portsmouth’s fascinating heritage (pg. 9). Join our journey as the Festival grows locally in the city, nationally in Leicester, Manchester and Portsmouth, and internationally through new European partnerships, helping to give visibility to and support the integration of refugees and asylum seekers from across the globe.” Charlotte Mountford // ArtReach Producer JOURNEYSFESTIVAL.COM

Seminar Culture and Mobility: Displacement, Adaptation and Creativity Fri 20 October // 2 – 4pm Room 1.08, Eldon West, Eldon Building, Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, Winston Churchill Avenue, University of Portsmouth PO1 2DJ

It is human nature to travel, migrate and move. These movements can be viewed as voluntary or forced, economic or political, desirable or reprehensible. Regardless of how it is categorized, mobility is often an opportunity for learning. Many of us are familiar with the stimulating effect of going to a new place, with different languages and customs to be learned, and opportunities for socializing, work and pleasure to be had. Taking dance as both a demonstration and a metaphor of the power of human movement, this informal, panelbased seminar will explore how cultural adaptability and creative thinking are strongly related to the long history and present-day realities of journeys, which may be taken for all kinds of reasons. Join this discussion, featuring specially invited leading performers, academics and artists from around the UK. Book your free space at JourneysFestivalInt.Eventbrite.com
