reativity is in Blair Atherholt’s DNA; both he and his father studied and taught (thirty years apart) at the Shuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore, MD where emphasis is placed upon techniques of the Old Masters. For his second Solo Show at Canary Gallery, Blair created an amazing body of still lifes. Inspired by the works of Jean-Baptiste Simeon Chardin, a master of still life, Blair’s works depicting inanimate objects evoke emotional reaction. Line and color beckon one to the paintings, but it is the rhythm the works maintain which captivates the viewer. As one patron noted, the Exhibit is not to be rushed through.

Atherholt’s Harshest Critic, juried in the 2019 Oil Painters of America 28th National Exhibition, was awarded the Award of Excellence and Empty Vessel received Best Still Life in the 2019 Best of America Small Painting National Juried Exhibition of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. MAC-GRYDER GALLERY N E W O R L E A N S, L O U I S I A N A

Illumination (1990) Monotype with collage, 30 x 44”

eginning in 1985, French painter Françoise Gilot sought to express herself in a new medium. During sessions at Solo Press in New York, she created several series of monoprints, or monotypes: one-of-a-kind painted and collaged artworks that complement and echo her lifelong work in oil on canvas, yet stand alone for their elaborate technique, striking colors and complex, textured surfaces. More spontaneous and freer than traditional lithography, richer and more luminous than watercolor paintings, these mesmerizing monotypes shimmer and dance before our eyes, almost otherworldly in their dimensional effects.

B

Gilot’s journey in this fascinating medium offers us yet another facet of her prodigious creativity to enjoy. Deeply layered and elaborately constructed, the monotypes reward a thoughtful viewer and must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Gilot occupies a unique niche in the modern art landscape as a female giant of the art world. At 97, she remains one of the most exciting and collectible artists of our century, as well as the preceding one. Amid the fraught wartime environment of the German Occupation, Gilot became one of the rising stars of her generation, loosely aligned with the burgeoning School of Paris movement. She met Pablo Picasso in a café on the eve of her first formal exhibition. Despite their 40-year age difference, Gilot answered

his charismatic celebrity with her own strong sense of self. After viewing her work, he took her seriously as an artistic and personal challenge; during their decade-long creative and romantic partnership, they had two children together, Paloma and Claude, and shared famous friends such as Matisse, Braque and the poet Paul Éluard. Gilot ended the relationship in 1953, unwilling to sacrifice her career or her identity to remain in his shadow. Now, after eight decades of creative achievement, Gilot is widely recognized as an innovative colorist and superlative draftsman, and as one of the major influences on Picasso’s work. Her drawings and paintings have enjoyed museum exhibitions worldwide and she has published several books. Her oeuvre comprises more than 6,000 paintings as well as drawings and printmaking works and she has designed theater sets for the stage and ballet productions. In 2012 she was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the nation of France. Gilot has been featured in numerous publications throughout her long career, twice interviewed by Charlie Rose and recently profiled by CBS Sunday Morning. Her life featured heavily in the Emmy-award-winning series Genius: Picasso. Recently the New York Book Review re-printed her memoir Life with Picasso in its 55th anniversary publication. At a recent event Dot added, “Art is a personal vision and an attempt to make the most faithful statement about people, time and places in our society. Perhaps the most profound statement an artist can make is in to take a deep look into the place where she lives. An artist’s work truly shows our spirit, who we are, and how we relate to the world. I hope the viewer feels my connection to the land, people and nature of the south. My own voice is a reflection of my deep abiding love of the rural southern landscape; it’s a shared story

RUTHIE CARLSON FINE ART M O N T G O M E R Y, A L A B A M A I cannot remember a day that I did not have a crayon or paintbrush in my hand. My closet was my very first studio.

DORIS INGLE FINE ART C H E R O K E E, A L A B A M A

Coastal Azaleas, 24” x 36”, oil on canvas

D

oris Ingle discovered oil paint relatively late in life. She had many years as a mother and student before beginning her career as an educator. It was after retiring from teaching gifted and talented students that she found her real calling in life. On an invitation from a friend, she began taking local beginning art lessons. A love affair blossomed with the pigments and brushes.

Since that time in 2012, numerous workshops have increased her knowledge, skills, and confidence. Doris is known for her landscapes, portraits and animals which are done with great affection and humor. . She loves painting children at play and very often uses her own grandchildren as subjects. Some her most renowned illustrations involve memories- hers and those of her friends. She uses photographs from the present day or from the past, always drawing on an emotional sense. As a result, she has paintings scattered all across the US, from Seattle to Key West. She is a member of Oil Painters of America and Portrait Society of America. Doris is available for commissions of your favorite places or your favorite people. View more of her work at www.dorisingle.com.

STONE HOLLOW FARMSTEAD H A R P E R S V I L L E, A L A B A M A onoring both her parents’ and her grandparents’ heritage, Deborah Stone founded Stone Hollow Farmstead in 1999 with her husband, Russell, and daughters, Fallon and Alexandra. The farm is located in Shelby County, about 30 minutes east of Birmingham, Alabama. They are proud to be a part of a flourishing agricultural economy within a community that seeks to preserve their rural heritage.

H

On the farm you'll find a small cadre of farmers, family members, interns, volunteers, and employees, all attending to the daily needs of hundreds of goats and chickens and a few jersey cows, happily living on pasture as nature intended. They raise their animals on a grass based system and consider themselves "grass farmers" who practice management-intensive grazing to ensure healthy pastures and healthy animals. Lessons learned from Deborah’s grandparents, who ran a sustainable farm and grocery store, are evident in the jars of rose petal jam, the hillside of happy goats, the hives of honeybees and the heirloom herb gardens. Today, the farmstead houses several complementary businesses: Stone Hollow Creamery, Stone Hollow Hanoverians, Stone Hollow Herbs, Botaniko Skin and NeoTegument medical skin care. For more information about the farm and its available products visit www.stonehollowfarmstead.com.
