stablished in 1977, Bennett Galleries houses a distinctive collection of contemporary fine art paintings and sculpture by established and emerging artists. Choose from a large, constantly evolving selection of abstract, landscape, and figurative works by local, regional, and international artists working in all mediums. Bennett Galleries also creates custom archival framing and has a large selection of ready-made frames. The gallery is pleased to feature the work of artists, Carolyn Killebrew and Paul Weber. For more information about the gallery’s inventory of art and artists and upcoming exhibits and events visit the gallery in person in Nashville or online at www.bennettgalleriesnashville.com.

Characterized by many as a colorist, her subject matter includes interior landscapes and situational figurative studies. Carylon Killebrew’s desire is to make art that is pure, simply honest and unadorned - art that is an extension of her faith in a creative God who is fully known through Christ. Her aim is not to glorify the painted work but to glorify the Creator and call attention to His goodness. Consequently, the viewer sees a style that is not elaborate or busy, but one that is a simple, bold, fulfilling, honest physical creation.

inings Gallery is pleased to feature local artist Simon Kenevan during the brilliant spring in Roswell, Georgia. After leaving school in 1982, Kenevan joined the crew of an English fishing boat, reaffirming his lifelong relationship with the sea. When he had managed to save enough money, he bought a 14’ rowing boat, fulfilling his ambition to work alone and become one with the natural environment.

Now, with more than 25 years of experience, Kenevan has found his vocabulary, via pigment and paper, brush and canvas. Working with pastels, and oils, precious moments are relived through the creative process. Each subsequent painting has its own resonance, unique to each and every viewer.

PERRY AUSTIN FINE ART S Y L A C A U G A, A L A B A M A I began formal training in the Aerospace industry as a technical illustrator and worked for companies from California to Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. After graduating from Auburn University, I continued to paint while developing representation at galleries.

In 1994 my three brothers and I were juried into Art Expo New York where we met David Leadman and Nancy Marshall of Walls Fine Art Gallery; and with their confidence in my work, they have represented me for over twenty years. This led to acceptance at other galleries and invitations to events such as the Thunderbird Foundation at the Maynard Dixon Ranch, La Quinta Art Festival, Paint Wilmington Invitational, Greenbrier Fine Art week, and teaching workshops across the country.” Perry is represented at the following fine art galleries: Morning on the Farm, 9” x 12”, oil Beverly McNeal Gallery, Birmingham, Alabama, Germanton Gallery, Germanton, North Carolina, Stonehenge Gallery, Montgomery, Alabama, Chirpwood Gallery, Opelika, Alabama, and Walls Fine Art at the Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. ean Mitchell is one of the most heralded living artists in the United States today. His technical skill is unsurpassed, and the emotional impact of his work is unforgettable. During his four-decade-long career, he has been recognized with hundreds of awards. His work is featured in museums, corporate and private collections throughout the country, and New York Times art critic Michael Kimmelman praised him as a “modern-day Vermeer.”

Mitchell’s unique voice reflects the American landscape, both geographic and personal, more keenly than any other painter. With searing insights into the human experience, he gives us a clearer picture of ourselves - beautiful, flawed and compelling - painted with an unflinching eye.

At the age of twenty-three, he became the youngest artist ever accepted into the National Watercolor Society; just five years later he was admitted into the American Watercolor Society. MAC-GRYDER GALLERY cont’d N E W O R L E A N S, L O U I S I A N A cclaimed southern artist Rolland Golden has earned a place in the canon of American masters alongside Grant Wood, Rockwell Kent and Edward Hopper. Born in New Orleans and trained under notable artist and instructor John McCrady (whose own artistic lineage traces to the Art Student's League of New York and his teacher Thomas Hart Benton), Golden's career has spanned six decades.

A

Golden's distinctive style fuses abstract realism, impressionism and his self-described "borderline surrealism" into a potent atmosphere. His work conveys a sense of place and social commentary both personal and universal. His landscapes often feature lengthy vanishing points as a metaphor for life's journey. He makes liberal use of symbols: roads and road-signs appear as visual motifs, alongside weather-beaten fences, barns and other rural structures. During his six-decade-long career, Golden has won dozens of awards; he is featured in corporate and museum collections

throughout the country. In 1976 he was chosen as the American realist painter to represent the United States on a tour of soviet Russia. In 2007-08, Golden's Katrina paintings were exhibited at the New Orleans Museum of Art; they were praised by museum director E. John Bullard as "the most significant body of artwork to result from the storm." In 2014, Golden received the Louisiana Legends award. The Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans mounted a retrospective of Golden's work in 2014, and several of his paintings are included in their permanent collection. Fundamentally optimistic, Golden balances despair with hope, decay with beauty, and power with delicacy. His extensive body of work suggests a fullness rather than emptiness of spirit, and conveys his deep affection for his subjects. His bold yet restrained style has appealed to collectors for the past six decades and will stand the test of time for countless more to come. At a recent event Dot added, “Art is a personal vision and an attempt to make the most faithful statement about people, time and places in our society. Perhaps the most profound statement an artist can make is in to take a deep look into the place where she lives. An artist’s work truly shows our spirit, who we are, and how we relate to the world. I hope the viewer feels my connection to the land, people and nature of the south.“ “My own voice is a reflection of my deep abiding love of the rural southern landscape; it’s a shared story about the lands - a salute to where I was born and raised and scenes observed during my life. I hope it is something for the south to relate to, be proud of, and people from elsewhere can be happy to view.” A full time artist, she paints in plein air and in her 2200 square foot studio in Pontotoc, Mississippi. This past year she was chosen for a solo show at the Kate Freeman Clark Museum. She has had numerous national awards with her southern landscapes and has been published in books and several art magazines. RUTHIE CARLSON FINE ART M O N T G O M E R Y, A L A B A M A

I cannot remember a day that I did not have a crayon or paintbrush in my hand. My daddy owned a printing company, and when I was little he would take me with him on Saturday mornings to draw and dream among infinite shelves of paper. I knew then I would be an artist. My closet was my very first studio. I pushed my clothes to one side, brought in a lamp, and meticulously displayed all my paints, markers, and crayons. That was just the beginning, and I have been painting ever since.

Blue Belle, 30” x 40”, oil on deep edge gallery canvas

It is my joy to get to paint every day, and to share my passion with other women who come for art classes or just a cup of coffee. Being an artist is so much more than putting paint on a canvas. I am thankful for the unique opportunity that God has given me to share my gifts with others. It gives incredible meaning and purpose to my creative journey.” Visit her studio gallery in person or online at www.ruthiecarlson.com.

eth Dean is a Mississippi-based artist who paints in oil to create her impressionistic paintings. She draws inspiration from all regions of her native Deep South, it’s people and it’s landscapes. As a confirmed "Italophile", she travels extensively in Italy, which also influences many of her works and is best known for her intense color palette, and most notably her skillful expression of water and skies.

It is Beth’s propensity for travel and keen observation of everyday life, both close to home and in far flung places, that makes her works fresh and vibrant. To view more of her work visit www.bethdeanstudio.com.

POLLI YOUNGBECK STUDIO S A N T A R O S A B E A C H, F L O R I D A olli Youngbeck’s first memories as an artist came from her mother’s kitchen as she fervently defended the originality of her drawing to her next-door-neighbor. She was four years old and her neighbor insisted that she had traced the drawing. She heard this story so many times as she grew into her role and thus her calling. An Alabama artist, she is a graduate from Auburn University with a degree in Design but also attended the Universitat Salzburg in Austria and Heidelberg University in Germany for further art training.

P

Atlanta was Polli’s home for most of her adult life where she taught art lessons in her home, schools and park systems until she settled in to a new life in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida ten years ago. She believes that God has blessed her with rich experiences and has given her the foundation for so much of what she paints. She paints with a passion and fervency of loss and pain as well as love, happiness, kindness and sacrifice. She paints with the wisdom and knowing of age and hardship that she has learned from every stroke of her life. For more of her works visit online at www. 30aartiststudios.com. BARGANIER DAVIS WILLIAMS ARCHITECTS M O N T G O M E R Y, A L A B A M A

J

ames I. Barganier, Dart W. Davis, and Ray E. Williams have been ardently designing creative communities through their planning, design and historic preservation for well over 13 decades combined. Barganier Davis Williams Architects Associated design emphasis of “each design should reflect the owners desires and tastes and deserves individual attention to coexist and compliment the environment in which it will be created”, is evidenced by the receipt of numerous awards for design excellence on the local, state, regional and national level, since the firm’s inception. One such award winning majestic masterpiece is the Frank M. Johnson, Jr. federal building and U.S. courthouse complex located in Montgomery, Alabama, designed by Barganier Davis Williams (formally Barganier Davis Sims). The design of the U. S. Courthouse is classical in nature with a modernist attitude, drawing upon the work of John Russell Pope for inspiration. The Courthouse, includes 315,000 square feet of occupiable space and secure enclosed parking for 100 cars, six District Courtrooms, four Magistrate and four Bankruptcy Courtrooms in addition to agencies of the U.S. Attorney, U.S. Marshal and offices of the District and Bankruptcy Clerk. To achieve a high degree of efficiency and to allow courtrooms with tall ceilings and windows, the architect employed an innovative solution in which the District Judges’ chambers are located in an interstitial level above the lobby serving these Courtrooms, yet each judge maintains quick, easy, and direct access from chamber to courtroom by means of shared and secured elevators and stairs.

On the facing page is an example of their beautiful and historic residential designs. The Strickland Cottage, the mountain vacation home of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Strickland, is located on the grounds of the famous and historic Highlands Country Club in Highlands, NC. Overlooking the pristine golf course, the cottage is actually a reconstruction

Frank M.Johnson, Jr. federal building and U.S. courthouse complex

with minor additions on the foot print of an early 1900’s structure. Adhering to the very strict regulations of the club and the city, the cottage is built completely of vernacular and traditional local materials to give the impression that it has been there decades. Furnished with beautiful art and comfortable family antiques this charming cottage provides a relaxing retreat for the owners. Volume 16 Issue 1
