“Soul” is an exercise on perception.

Joaristi chose a photograph of her young mother and other art pieces symbolizing children’s toys and the spinning of time. She attached the fragments randomly by radically honoring imagination in our own daydreaming and wakefulness.

Through this art piece, the artist invites us to recover the lost soul of Western consciousness and culture making possible a true return to the full perception of the meaning of soul. For Joaristi soul does not belong exclusively to the human individual or human world, but is a more encompassing fabric in which the sacred web of life is held.

In Joaristi the retrieval of soul in all its imaginal complexity and fragmentation invites us to get acquainted with the fragmented phases of many key myths of Western culture, by identifying ourselves with a particular art piece of this series. It is through these art proposals of what we could call 'mythic contextualization' accompanying several fragmentation of the ego, that her intervention is almost shamanic and significant.

"Alma" es un ejercicio de percepción.

Joaristi eligió una fotografía juvenil de su madre y otras piezas que representan trompos, juguetes infantiles que giran en el tiempo, uniendo los fragmentos al azar mediante el recurso imaginal que redunda en la propia ensoñación y la vigilia. A través de esta pieza, la artista nos invita a recuperar el alma perdida de la conciencia en la cultura Occidental, permitiendo un giro hacia la percepción del significado integral del alma del mundo: “anima mundi”.

Para Joaristi el alma no pertenece exclusivamente al individuo o a la humanidad, sino que es un tejido más amplio en el que se aglutina la vida toda.

En Joaristi la recuperación de alma en toda su complejidad y fragmentación imaginal nos invita a conocer las fases fragmentadas de muchos mitos fundamentales de la cultura Occidental, a través de nuestra identificación con alguna de las piezas de esta serie. Es a través de estas propuestas en las que ella recontextualiza los mitos enfrentados al ego. Por esta razón sus intervenciones simbólicas sobre pinturas propias es casi chamánica.

I love flea markets, I go and search for popular art and buy painted copies or reproductions on canvas of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa or Van Gogh’s, paintings, naive art, domestic art or any kind of art that has become a synonymous of "Art" to the majority of the public.

Me encantan los mercados de pulgas, voy a buscar “arte lugar común” y encuentro copias de da Vinci, de Van Gogh, arte ingenuo, arte doméstico, todo aquel arte de caballete que se ha convertido en sinónimo de arte para el gran público.

“Broken Sun” is a product of the surgeries I perform over traditional paintings. My intention is to dissect the established thinking and values of status quo. The sun has been and is the center of our mental galaxy, how can we change paradigms without dissecting these concepts? I break the sun into pieces in order to ask a question to me and to you all.

“Sol Roto” es producto de estas cirugías en las que disecciono el pensamiento establecido y sus valores de común denominador.

El sol ha sido y es el centro de nuestra galaxia mental, ¿cómo podemos cambiar paradigmas sin diseccionar sus conceptos? El del arte establecido, por ejemplo y su ruta hacia el brillo del reconocimiento institucional.

Rompo ese sol, el de los valores preestablecidos y construyo con él una pregunta para mí y para todos.

In this series is easy to detect the thread Joaristi has been reeling since her teens, when she drew endless semi-figurative forms derived from issues of identity that attained a new awareness in her paintings and collages, understood the term as defined by William C. Wees "juxtaposition of pre-existing elements extracted from their original context, diverted from their intended uses." She denominates as “fragmentations” these proposals where she appropriates other paintings, sometimes recognizable as the Starry Night by Van Gogh in "Broken Sun" or the Mona Lisa in “Weekend for the Monas”, others are naive paintings or reproductions purchased at flea markets or photographs of her own or of any other person who asked for a fragmented portrait, split and recombined. These fragmentations propose a questioning of institutional art values and movements, a playful contravention of the traditional artwork, a rejection of the representation of reality as a whole.

Encuentro en su serie “fragmentados” el hilo conductor que viene devanando desde la adolescencia, cuando dibujaba con bolígrafo interminables formas volumétricas en las que logro reconocer una imagen abstracta o semi-figurativa contenida por el geometrismo o por grafismos libres y modulados, que muestran ya su madurez en el collage, entendido el término como lo definió William C. Wees: “la yuxtaposición de elementos pre–existentes extraídos de sus contextos originarios, desviados de sus usos previstos y por tanto, hechos para deparar una significación no reconocida previamente”. En estas piezas Aimee se apropia de otras pinturas, a veces reconocibles, como las franjas del Van Gogh en “Sol Roto” o la Mona Lisa; otras son pinturas ingenuas o piezas compradas en mercados de pulgas, escindidas y recombinadas, pero también fotografías propias, familiares o de personas que solicitan un retrato fragmentado.

Joaristi inherits the visual transgressions of the Dada movement, cutting, splitting, and recombining. She is a radicant, an altermodern in the sense of Nicolas Bourriaud, which means setting one’s roots in motion, staging them in heterogeneous contexts and formats, denying them any value as origins, translating ideas, transcoding images, transplanting behaviors, exchanging rather than imposing. However, her manual interventions can lead us to the neogeo or the simulationism movements associated with artists like Peter Halley and Ashley Bickerton, who adopted an ironic distance to the tradition of painting, understanding it as a store of "readymades" in the sense of Duchamp.

Estas fragmentaciones proponen un cuestionamiento sobre los valores del arte institucional y sus desplazamientos, una transgresión lúdica del entramado textual de la obra de arte tradicional, una voluntad segura de su rechazo a la representación y la supuesta realidad, de su negación del sujeto y del dogmatismo teórico.

Como heredera legítima del collage de las primeras vanguardias, se inserta dentro de la altermodernidad propuesta por Nicolás Bourriaud. Sin embargo, sus intervenciones manuales la emparentan con la pintura geométrica a la que en el New York de los años sesenta se dio en llamar neo–geo y simulacionismo, movimientos asociados con artistas como Peter Halley y Ashley Bickerton, quienes adoptaron una distancia irónica respecto a la tradición de la pintura, entendiéndola como un almacén de “readymades” a lo Duchamp, del que era posible apropiarse y reformular.

Joaristi keeps a blank canvas always ready -is my challenge and excitement,- she says, determined to be true to her artistic vocation. Her enthusiastic practice of painting, drawing and collage, has been permanent. Some of her paintings / collages are already in major collections, like the one of Francisco Cantos Baquedano, a founding member of the Board of the ARCO Foundation in Madrid or the Herrera, Hernandez-Iturbide Private Art Collection in Mexico City and many more.

En el taller de Joaristi siempre está dispuesto un lienzo en blanco, el reto y la ilusión, como ella lo llama, fiel a la firmeza de su vocación pictórica. Su entusiasta práctica de la pintura, el dibujo y el collage, ha sido permanente. Aunque desconocida para muchos, varias de sus piezas se encuentran ya en colecciones de importancia, como la de Francisco Cantos Baquedano, miembro fundador del Patronato de la Fundación ARCO en Madrid o la colección privada Hernández Iturbide de México y muchas otras.

Her artwork dismantles the traditional system of composition and discovers the fractal dynamic plane of reality. “Fractal” is a term borrowed to the mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot. Fractals are typically self-similar patterns, where self-similar means they are "the same from near as from far".

Su trabajo desmantela el sistema tradicional de composición y descubre la perspectiva dinámicofractal de la realidad. “Fractal” es un término prestado al matemático Benoît Mandelbrot. Los fractales son patrones similares que son lo mismo “de lejos o de cerca”.

Tonantzin is a painting / collage that was conveyed from the images found at a Mexican flea market and a historical anecdote I heard some time ago. One of the temples Hernán Cortez destroyed during the early years of the conquest of Mexico was that of the goddess Tonantzin, located on Tepeyac Hill. Tonantzin is believed to be a manifestation of the Earth Mother, known as Coatlicue, the mother of all living things, who conceived by immaculate and miraculous means.

Tonantzin is my tribute to the multiculturalism of Mexico, a miracle of coexistence between globalization and ancient myths.

Tonantzin es una pintura/collage que nace de las imágenes halladas en un mercadillo de arte y una anécdota histórica que escuché hace algún tiempo, la que cuenta que la representación bondadosa de la diosa azteca Coatlicue , era la Madre Venerada, Tonantzin, cuyo templo destruyó Hernán Cortéz, y después de la conquista, se convirtió la deidad en el mismo sitio, en la Virgen de Guadalupe.

Tonantzin es mi homenaje a la convivencia entre globalización y antiguos mitos en México, una visión de su multiculturalidad, desde lo femenino.

The visual challenge she offers, began many years ago but when she started practicing yoga, she acknowledged that in childhood we human beings become so involved and charmed with the growing arsenal of our ego, that we unquestioningly assume it is who we are. That deceptive assumption constitutes the ego's iron grip on us.

This was the reason why she considered her inner “fragmentations” should recombine to build new meanings to herself and to others.

El desafío visual que Joaristi ofrece, se inició hace muchos años, pero cuando empezó a practicar yoga, encontró que es en la infancia cuando que los seres humanos nos encantamos con el creciente arsenal de nuestro ego, el que incuestionablemente suponemos es quienes somos. Esa suposición engañosa se constituye en el férreo control del ego sobre nuestra existencia. Por esta razón ella consideró que sus "fragmentaciones" interiores podían recombinarse para construir nuevos significados para sí misma y para los demás.

When relating to one of her teenage drawings “The King and the Queen” (1976) we can sense her ability to maintain her identity in the face of pain, challenge and conflict.

Her ego was her vessel that kept her afloat in the sea of consensual reality. But when we come across with her new “Self portrait of the King and the Queen” (2013), we can feel the space in which the content occurs. Not favoring one fragment over the other, but just an invitation of awareness of the Self. It helps us to start to notice the difference between content and what underlies the content… the knowing and seeing of the content, or awareness.

Cuando observamos un dibujo de su adolescencia, "El rey y la reina" (1976), sentimos su capacidad de mantener su identidad frente al dolor, el desafío y el conflicto.

Entonces, su ego era la nave que la mantuvo a flote en el mar de la realidad consensual. Pero cuando nos encontramos con su nuevo "Autorretrato del Rey y de la Reina" (2013), percibimos claramente el espacio en el que produce su nuevo contenido. En esta pieza no favorece ningún fragmento sobre otro, sino simplemente permite el fluir de su conciencia, promueve la percepción entre el contenido y lo que subyace.

In “Clown” Joaristi fragments a character of her “Tarot” series painted in 2000. This clown is cropped into fine segments and distributed dynamically over a horizontal canvas painted resembling a graffiti wall found in the street nearby the artist studio.

Joaristi loves the colors and language of crumbling walls and assembled the stripes of the reaped clown like a shattered fence over the background she painted.

En “Payaso” Joaristi fragmenta uno de sus personajes de la serie “Tarot”, que pintó en 2000. Este payaso fue editado en pequeños segmentos y distribuido con dinamismo sobre un lienzo horizontal que rememora una pared de graffiti cercana a su taller. A la artista le encanta el lenguaje de las paredes que se desmoronan, por lo que montó los fragmentos de su pintura como una cerca quebrada sobre el fondo que simula el muro.

–These are the bricks that reformulate a barricade of comedy and drama, the same barrier our Ego builds ignoring the Self- she declares.

”Il castrato” is an Art piece fragmented after a painting of my “Tarot” series from 2000. This fragmented painting commands that you should go back to where you buried a memory-- and dig it up. There could be a great and real possibility here, so don't settle for mere fantasy or regret.

"Il castrato" es una pieza fragmentada a partir de otra pintura de mi serie “Tarot”, de 2000. Esta pintura/collage te ordena que vuelvas al pasado donde enterraste un recuerdo y lo saques a la luz. En los reencuentros hay una verdadera posibilidad que va más allá de la fantasía o el remordimiento, que puede estar fragmentando en este instante un fragmento de tu pasado.

Pay attention to it because it could hold the key to a treasured spark of life, a renewed quest, or epiphany. The effect would be to restore lost energy, overturn disappointments, revive drained hopes and perk up social opportunities. It's Momentum might be gathering on it's own.

Presta atención porque esta puede ser la clave de un destello atesorado de tu vida o a una epifanía. Puedes recobrar la energía perdida, revivir esperanzas olvidadas y retomar oportunidades. Este clímax está formándose aún sin tu participación.

“Kool-Aid Blood” is an art piece that represents the artist’s youth, because the flavored drink was a popular children’s beverage. The drink was prepared by mixing the powder with sugar and water, just as she mixes juvenile dreams with “The Fool”, a character she painted in 2000 as a piece of her “Tarot” series. The Fool or The Jester is one of the 22 Major Arcana.

"Sangre de Kool-Aid" es una pieza que se origina en la primera infancia de la artista, ya que esta bebida con colorante rojo era muy popular entre los niños en aquellos días. La bebida en polvo se prepara con agua y azúcar, de la misma manera en la que ella mezcla sus sueños juveniles con "El Loco", un personaje que pintó en el año 2000, perteneciente a su serie "Tarot". El Loco o El bufón es uno de los 22 arcanos mayores.

–The Fool is almost always unnumbered because he is the spirit in search of experience; the real world is still expecting to bleed out his visionsshe explained and continued, -When I fragmented “The Fool” I also cropped a photograph of mine when I was 19 years old in order to alter each image unity. A new circulatory system needs different arteries and veins flowing from childhood to adulthood, this is the Kool-Aid blood that binds dreams and hopes”-.

-El Loco carece de numeración porque es el espíritu en busca de la experiencia, el mundo real aún lo espera para desangrar sus visiones- me explica, y continúa: Cuando fragmenté a "El Loco" también recorté una foto mía a los 19 años de edad, con el fin de alterar la unidad de cada imagen. Un nuevo sistema circulatorio necesita diferentes arterias y venas que se deriven de la niñez hacia la edad adulta, es la sangre de Kool-Aid que se une a los sueños y esperanzas "-.

“Who am I?” What exactly does ‘tracing the ego back to the source’ mean? To answer this question I fragmented an ink drawing I made on my youth and a photograph, because, we must ‘go back the way we came’, and before we can do that, we must understand what ‘the way we came’ actually is.

"¿Quién soy?” ¿Qué quiere decir rastrear al ego directamente en la fuente? Para responderme, fragmenté un dibujo a tinta china que hice en mi juventud y una fotografía de la misma época, porque “porque debemos recorrer el camino por el que vinimos” y antes de eso, debemos entender cuál es ese camino.

“H & H” reunifies two paintings of her youth where we can sense the raw energy of her powerful ego motivating her to renew everything.

The more unrestricted she gets, the less personal her ego operates.

There is more of a sense of will coming from her inner strength. This is a flow of life itself. –“When the personal will is surrendered, (Hell) Heaven is what takes over”-, she explains. This happens when she lets go and surrender to recombining memories with the present. What does this look like? Like this painting /collage, a meeting between spontaneity and intuition.

She relied on it like a reflex. The new energy blends with the other and a new perception of time and space is proposed to tap into as the fabric of all duality.

"H & H" reunifica dos pinturas de su juventud cuya energía la impulsó a renovar sus supuestos. Cuanto más libertad permite en su quehacer, menos ego produce en su propuesta. Se trata del flujo de la vida misma. - Cuando la obsesión (el infierno) se rinde, el cielo se hace cargo -, explica. Esto sucede mientras fluyo y recombino recuerdos con el ahora-. ¿Qué apariencia adquiere esto? El resultado es esta pintura / collage, que reúne espontaneidad e intuición, reflejando una sobre la otra.

La nueva energía que origina se mezcla con la otra y propone una nueva percepción del tiempo y el espacio, el tejido de toda dualidad.

“Valkyrie” is an acrylic painting crossed by a collage of fragments of a XIX Century reproduction on canvas of “Lohengrin and the swan” and two glowing faceted worlds like the eyes of a dragonfly, or the gaze of Fafnir. - A dragon and a warrior are two champions needed to shape a Valkyrie- she says. Joaristi’s uncle and godfather was an opera lover.

He was a fan of Wagner and she remembers him listening to old 78 rpm records of Amelie Melba singing “Die Walküre” and planning his yearly trips to Bayreuth. –“ I wanted to pay tribute to these women who were warriors and goddesses at the same time, a symbol of any woman in the present who fights for what she believes in, in the same way I dedicate myself to Art no matter what-“.

“Walkyria” es una pintura al acrílico cruzada por fragmentos de una reproducción sobre tela de un grabado del siglo XIX de “Lohengrin y el cisne” y dos faceteados mundos rosas, como los ojos de una libélula o la mirada de Fafner. –Se necesita un dragón y un guerrero para formar a una Walkyria-, comenta Joaristi. Su tío y padrino era un amante de la ópera y un admirador de Wagner. Ella lo recuerda escuchando viejos discos de 78 rpm en los que Amelie Melba cantaba “Las Walkyrias” y planificando sus viajes anuales a Bayreuth. –Yo quería rendir tributo a estas mujeres que eran guerreras y diosas al mismo tiempo, de la misma manera que cualquier mujer actual que lucha por lo que cree, como yo que me dedico a las artes visuales sin importar qué.-

As my awareness of consciousness expands, it becomes more and more important to me the fact that the present is not a fleeting phenomenon but a localized one: if my current experiences are present, so too are all the other events that are happening at the same time, irrespective of where they are located. In that state of mind my former “Portrait of the King and Queen”, which I drew in 1976 becomes an opportunity to slice time on a labyrinthine party with no end.

I am not sure ‘knowing’ ourselves implies a mental knowing. Painting is my language to gain awareness of non-dual states of being, a bridge between the repetitive labyrinth of ego and its structure falling away in an endless party of joy.

En la misma medida que mi consciencia se expande, siento que el presente no es un fenómeno pasajero sino localizado, que convierte mis experiencias presentes en una sola, junto a otras situaciones que sucedan en el instante, sin importar dónde ocurran. Bajo esta premisa, “El retrato del Rey y la Reina” un dibujo realizado en 1976 se convierte en una oportunidad para rebanar el tiempo en una fiesta laberíntica sin principio ni final.

No creo que “conocernos a nosotros mismos” implique un conocimiento mental. La pintura es mi lenguaje para hacer consciencia sobre los estados no duales del ser, un puente que tiendo entre el laberinto del ego y su estructura que cae en una fiesta de gozo interminable.

Joaristi evolved from fragmented selfportraits to the fragmented portraits of others through the ancient spiritual premise of “You are Me and I am You” that the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh puts in words like this,

Isn't it obvious that we "inter-are"?

-Everything in the universe is consciousness- she says - When two electrons collide, they exchange energy and information with each other. From then onwards, no matter where one electron is, you will be able to tell the location and momentum of the other.

Has the portrait ever been quite what it seems? In Art History, Modern movements attempted to leap beyond the purely mimetic, with their effect on portraiture prioritizing the presence, aura or psychology of an individual. In Joaristi, her portraits are simultaneous fragments of the subject’s life, chosen by the subject, not the artist. Joaristi intervention starts with the segmentation of those images over an ambiance that relies on the aura she perceives of the subject.

-Each of my portraits depicts a multitude of possibilities into an action -packed energy fields that remain inseparably connected at all times.

These portraits are the universe, located in one person, since our thoughts, wishes and desires are not actually our thoughts, wishes and desires. Part of them are the very intentions of the universe.- she declares.

¿No es obvio que inter-somos?

-Todo en el universo es conciencia– Joaisti afirma-. Cuando dos electrones se encuentran intercambian información entre ellos, de ahí en adelante, sin importar dónde estén, podemos saber el sitio y el momento de cada uno.¿Ha sido el retrato siempre igual? En la Historia del Arte, las vanguardias superaron la mímesis en el retrato, priorizando la presencia, el aura y la psicología del individuo. En Joaristi, sus retratos son fragmentos simultáneos de la vida del sujeto, seleccionados por él mismo, no por la artista. Su intervención inicia con la segmentación de esas imágenes sobre un escenario que se basa en el aura que ella percibe en el/la modelo.

-Cada retrato muestra una multitud de posibilidades en un campo de energía cerrado que permanecen conectadas siempre.

Estos retratos son el universo localizado en una persona, ya que nuestros pensamientos, sentimientos y deseos son también parte indivisible de las intenciones del Universo-, dice Joaristi.

While using more or less traditional painterly procedures , Joaristi researches from her initial observations through sketches in her iPad – shaping visual thought enhanced by descriptive, comments and poetic reflections demonstrating a dialogue with herself, and also communicating to others through her concern for the following: • exploration of function and interaction of shape and color, • dynamic expression and composition, • correction, reformulation and sometimes contradiction of an earlier idea, resulting in a build-up of information over time, evidencing a consistent visual investigative process.

A través de un sistema más o menos tradicional en la pintura, Joaristi investiga desde sus observaciones iniciales mediante bosquejos en su iPad, dando forma a sus visiones y reflexiones descriptivas o poéticas, manteniendo un diálogo con ella misma y su entorno a través de: • La exploración de las funciones e interacciones de la forma y el color, • La composición y el dinamismo expresivo, • Las correcciones y reformulaciones, así como las contradicciones de una idea primaria, resultando en información que se reintegra en el tiempo, evidenciando su proceso investigativo permanente.

Joaristi is an artist, an architect, she is also a designer, a writer, a mom, a wife, a friend; she is Cuban, Spaniard, Costar Rican… Is she a whole or she is only a fragment of this collage?

Joaristi es arquitecta, es diseñadora, escritora, mamá, esposa, amiga; es cubana, española y costarricense… ¿es ella total o sólo un fragmento de este collage?

As an architect she has obtained significant awards by herself or along with her partner Enrique Barrascout, in the firm they created in 1995 as Joaristi & Barrascout: In 2004 her own house depicting her art work, was awarded the first place in the International Forum Design for Inner Space. In the IX International Biennial of Architecture in 2008, “Challenges in the Twenty One Century” her firm achieved the Honorable Mention and the same year was awarded the National Award for Interior Design during the Fifth International Forum Design for Inner Space for Hotel L’Acquaviva.

Como arquitecta ha obtenido premios relevantes individualmente o mediante la firma que creó con su socio: Joaristi & Barrascout.

En 2004 su propia casa, intervenida a pincel por ella misma, gana el primer premio del International Forum Design for Inner Space. En 2008 durante la IX Bienal de Arquitectura, “Retos para el Siglo Veintiuno”, su firma obtuvo la mención de honor por el hotel L’Acquaviva y en ese mismo año gana el Premio Nacional de Diseño de Interiores durante la Quinta edición del International Forum design for Inner Space por ese mismo trabajo. En 2009 gana el Premio Nacional de Diseño de Interiores por su apartamento en

She is internationally recognized as a successful architect and interior designer. But at the very same time she has been painting, writing and raising her children, one of them, Allegra Pacheco, already a successful artist herself and the boy, also a visual artist who is starting college.

-Do I really need an Art CV? She asks.

— My CV is not a written conventional story, is a unified theme that shows development over time and space. A CV is a fragmented document which does not display the human side of our education and our work, the exchange of knowledge with powerful and wonderful minds, and facts we learn or exchange in a world that is not explained within books or at any relevant institution but with life itself. Any category or event can be described in more or less detail. Although these different descriptions can reflect the same event objectively, they may not reflect the same event subjectively.

That is why my “fragmentations” more than a CV , reflect my life and yours as a whole.

Joaristi es reconocida internacionalmente como una arquitecta y diseñadora exitosa, pero al mismo tiempo que alcanzaba ese reconocimiento, pintaba, escribía y criaba sus hijos, uno de los cuales, Allegra Pacheco, es una artista exitosa y el menor, un artista visual comenzando sus primeros años de universidad.

-¿Por qué necesito un CV? Pregunta. –Mi CV no es una historia convencional escrita en papel, es un tema unificado que muestra su desarrollo en el tiempo y en el espacio. Un CV convencional es un documento de fragmentado que no muestra el lado humano de nuestras relaciones con el mundo, las que no pueden explicarse mediante un libro o a través de ninguna institución relevante.

Cualquier evento puede ser descrito en detalle objetivamente, pero éstas descripciones no reflejarán su lado subjetivo. Por eso mis “fragmentaciones” reflejan mi vida o la tuya como una totalidad, más que cualquier curriculum.
