CLIENT: Academic Medical Center Physicians
CASE STUDY
New York, NY
The goal is to create easily digestible data to inform and influence our client’s real estate decisions. Whether for projection and development of new environments of care, or for analyzing your existing practice spaces, service line and volumes-based space benchmarks are critical to understand the investment need for service growth. Specialized facility prototypes can help you set utilization and capacity targets, contribute to clinical standardization and optimize your service management strategy. SERVICE: Strategy
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
METHOD: Space Prototyping
As the design/construction and healthcare industries increasingly rely on data, the opportunities to use data visualization to improve healthcare design planning
Challenge The physician group and their real estate agent did not have a clear way of searching for and evaluating potential sites for ambulatory expansion. With a real estate agent unfamiliar with the architectural and engineering needs of a medical practice, they could not narrow down a list of available sites that worked operationally for a physician practice.
increase as well. From early strategic planning to functional and space program development, utilizing data visualizations can offer deeper insights into a health system’s needs. Moreover, in Array Advisors’ case, the ability to live-connect to data or receive automated updates within a visualization platform reinforces our continuous improvement culture. By tracking real-time internal process and work flow data, we can continually improve our processes and strategies to better serve our employees and our clients. Utilizing Tableau, a data analysis and visualization software, to generate an interactive site selection tool from data collected during facility assessments, you can achieve a level of clarity that is difficult with static spreadsheets or PowerPoint presentations.
Solution A team of healthcare design experts led by Array, created a visual Lean-led process to guide the client through their search for appropriate expansion sites in downtown Manhattan. Stakeholders developed a detailed selection criteria and Array created a weighted matrix for the leadership team and real estate agent’s use during initial site visit.
Rather than scrolling through dense spreadsheets, the viewer can highlight a site by clicking on its address and see its data, such as overall rating, individual item group ratings, comments, criterion and criterion weight, or any other associated data while simultaneously seeing how that data compares to other locations. The three highest-scoring sites were chosen for detailed cost analysis, providing the client a clear representation of the ROI for their preferred locations.
