e City of Arlington continues to be recognized for its strong nancial performance and commitment to transparency, earning accolades from national and state organizations. In fact, Arlington is one of only 36 entities in the State of Texas to receive all three of the Government Finance O cers Association’s (GFOA) most prestigious awards: the Certi cate of Achievement in Excellence in Financial Reporting, the Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

We’re also one of only 11 entities in Texas to have achieved all six Transparency Stars from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. is program recognizes local governments that go above and beyond in making their nancial information readily available to the public including traditional nances,

contracts and procurement, economic development, public pensions, debt obligations, and open government compliance.

e city’s scally sound policies, nancial resilience, and manageable long-term liabilities have also resulted in consistently high credit ratings from the three major independent rating agencies: S&P Global Ratings, Moody’s Ratings, and Fitch Ratings. ese strong ratings are crucial as they enable the city to secure lower interest rates on its debt, ultimately saving taxpayer dollars. My gratitude goes out to everyone who’s worked hard to make this a reality.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY

The 9-episode series Mini Reni follows Joanna Gaines as she trades her signature large-scale renovations for bite-sized projects with quick timelines. In each episode, she makes intentional and creative additions to transform smaller spaces with a big impact. From demo to design and everything in between, Mini Reni will give viewers a front-row seat to Joanna’s entire renovation process. New episodes air every Wednesday through July 9th on Magnolia Network (streaming on Max and Discovery+).

SOUTHERN COMFORT

TrueSouth is an Emmy Award-winning limited series on Southern food and culture, airing biweekly on SEC Network. Four-time James Beard Award winner John T. Edge writes and hosts the show, which is executive produced by two-time New York Times best-selling author ESPN senior writer Wright Thompson.

The series, now in its seventh season, revolves around two food stories told from one place, which TrueSouth sets in conversation to make larger points about Southern beliefs and identities. Seasons 1-6 of TrueSouth are available on ESPN+ and Hulu.

Music plays an integral role in TrueSouth’s storytelling via on-screen performances and on-screen credits. The TrueSouth playlist on Spotify shares every season’s full soundtrack and score.

SMOOTH SOUNDS

Durand Jones & The Indications blend vintage soul with modern themes, creating music that feels timeless yet relevant. Known for their smooth harmonies, rich instrumentation, and dual lead vocals from Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, the band channels the spirit of ‘60s and ‘70s R&B. Their sound nods to Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye while addressing themes of love and unity. The result is emotionally charged soul with a fresh, genre-defying edge.

PARABLES IN THE MODERN DAY CHURCH

Have you ever wondered why Jesus used parables? The answer is likely not what you think, or perhaps what you’ve been taught.

Some say He used parables to illustrate His points, like any great teacher would; he wanted to help His listeners understand what He was trying to teach them. I’ve

heard this argument used to justify all types of props and schemes and worldly entertainment from the pulpit on Sunday mornings.

They say, Jesus used parables, so shouldn’t I do the same? Shouldn’t I do whatever it takes to illustrate the point I am trying to make? Shouldn’t I do whatever it takes to reach

people and get them through the doors of this church? Those words sound good. They sound like they come from a place of zeal for the lost. And I believe they often do! But the only question that really matters is this: Are they truth? Do they, in fact, represent the scripturally prescribed model for evangelism and our approach to the local church? Remember, the greatest lies contain much

truth. The Apostle Paul says it better: “It only takes a little leaven [deception] to leaven the whole lump.” (Galatians 5:9)

Let’s talk about those parables for a minute. Most people don’t realize that the Bible gives us the exact reason Jesus used parables. In the book of Matthew, the disciples pull Jesus aside and ask Him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”

(Matthew 13:10)

How do you think He answered? Did He say that He was seeking to make the truth more entertaining? Did He say that He wanted to do whatever it takes to illustrate kingdom truths, so that more people would find salvation? No. He said something very different…

And Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. Therefore, I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. And in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, ‘YOU SHALL KEEP ON LISTENING, BUT SHALL NOT UNDERSTAND; AND YOU SHALL KEEP ON LOOKING, BUT SHALL NOT PERCEIVE;

FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL,

WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES, OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT SEE WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART, AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.’” (Matthew 13:11–15)

Jesus’ response was quite the opposite of what we might expect. He did not use parables to open the eyes of many to the truth, but instead to keep the truth veiled to those who had hardened their hearts and were under the judgment of God. Even His own disciples would often come to Him privately to get the explanations. It is my belief that if someone were to truly study the four Gospel accounts of Jesus’ earthly ministry, they would find it hard not to walk away thinking He seems to be more

concerned about weeding people out than bringing people in. He seemed to be more concerned about the purity and piety of a few, than the half-hearted curiosity of the masses.

Just think for a moment what it must have been like for the crowd of people listening in the synagogue when Jesus turned to them and told them that they must eat His flesh and drink His blood if they wanted eternal life. (John 6:53-58) You and I have the privilege of looking at that statement 2,000 years after the cross and understanding its spiritual significance. But what was it like on that day when those words actually came out of His mouth? What did those people think in that moment? Five verses later we get to see exactly what they thought about His peculiar approach to evangelism: As a result of this, many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.” (John 6:63)

Let’s look at one other Biblical example. The Apostle Paul gives us a very interesting description of his approach to evangelizing the Corinthians…

“And when I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come as someone superior in speaking ability or wisdom, as I proclaimed to you the testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. I also was with you in weakness and fear, and in great trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of mankind, but on the power of God.”

(1 Corinthians 2:1-5)

It’s important to understand a couple things from that passage. First, Paul was a well-educated man. He had studied under Gamaliel, one of the most highly respected teachers of Jewish Law in his time; Paul was more than equipped to use persuasive words of human wisdom. Second, the Corinthians were a people who placed a high value on wisdom, philosophy, and oratory skill. This would have been the ideal scenario for Paul to say to himself, I must do whatever it takes to reach these Corinthians! I must go to them with great oratory skill and philosophical arguments because that’s what they value. That’s what will hold their attention. But Paul does the opposite. He resolves to know nothing except “Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.” Why did Paul choose this approach? So that their “faith would not rest on the

wisdom of men, but on the power of God.”

The Apostle Paul saw things different than many “pastors” today. Primarily, he saw the Word of the Living God as SUFFICIENT! He agreed with those words in Hebrews, “The word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12) Furthermore, Paul knew that whatever means He would use to win them to Christ would become the foundation of their faith.

Modern day missionary and evangelist, Paul Washer, says it like this…

“If you use carnal means to attract men, you’re going to attract carnal men; and you’re going to have to keep using greater carnal means to keep them in the church.”

The great Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon, consistently condemned the “seeker-sensitive” approach. Let us look at just a few of his words on this subject…

“The devil has seldom done a cleverer thing than hinting to the Church that part of their mission is to provide entertainment for the people, with a view to winning them.”

And again…

“If you have to give a carnival to get people to come to church, then you will have to keep giving carnivals to keep them coming back.”

And perhaps the most stinging…

“That very church which the world likes best is sure to be that which God abhors.”

My friend, my words should be a great encouragement to you. This approach to evangelism is much simpler. We do not need to devise carnal methods and strategies to attract and entertain people. That is the method of this world. Let us be done with all this tomfoolery and begin to regard the Word of God for what it truly is: SUFFICIENT!

Urological Health ImpactsYour Quality of Life

AND ALL THE SYSTEMS OF YOUR BODY

Nobody ever really wants to have surgery— let along multiple surgeries for the same condition. But that’s the scenario James Kelley faced as a teenager. In fact, a genetic condition of the hips not only landed him in a wheelchair for two years but required him to undergo hip-replacement surgery, when he was only 21.

It wasn’t a situation he’d have chosen for himself, but it was the catalyst for a career in medicine that has allowed him to positively impact the lives of thousands of his North Texas neighbors.

A medical career wasn’t an obvious first choice for a boy who pictured himself shredding on guitar in a band, playing pro sports, or enjoying a career in woodworking. (All those woodworking projects were actually good practice for later using his hands to perform surgery .)

“My passion through it all was helping others though and my own health struggles opened the door for a career in medicine,” Dr. Kelley said. “Once in medical school, I was fortunate enough to stumble onto the field of urology, which ended up being a perfect fit for me.” His patients would certainly agree.

For Dr. Kelley, urology provides the ideal blend of a cutting-edge surgical field (There’s that hand dexterity coming into play.) and a relationshipdriven specialty that allows him to forge longterm relationships while he treats problems and significantly improves the lives of his patients.

As a general urologist, Dr. Kelley treats a wide range of urology problems across all aspects of the field. “I definitely have a passion for treating both male and female urinary issues, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men and urinary incontinence in women,” he said. “And I’m fortunate to be able to offer some of the most up-to-date technology to care of these problems, including multiple minimally invasive and state-of-the-art treatment options. It’s

a great time to be working in this field with new advancements and breakthroughs all the time.”

Some of the treatment options Dr. Kelley offers at Texas Center for Urology are advanced Aquablation for BPH, sacral neuromodulation, and Bulkamid for female incontinence, and so much more. “I encourage patients even if they’re just curious about what options are available that would greatly improve their lives to come by and consult with me,” he said. “We can often find solutions they didn’t even know were possible— solutions that weren’t available until recently.”

Patients praise Dr. Kelley for the amount of time he spends really listening to them then patiently outlining their treatment options. “I never want someone to leave an appointment with me with unanswered questions,” he said. “Every single patient is unique, and their condition, lifestyle, and medical preferences are unique. I don’t believe in cookie-cutter care. I want each patient to understand what I’m recommending and why. And we never move forward, until they feel comfortable with my recommendations.”

Dr. Kelley himself has had the experience of feeling like “just a number” at a medical practice, and he never wants one of his patients to feel that way. “I want to be my patient’s advocate and take the time to guide them toward the best treatment options possible that fit their goals and needs,” he said. “And I want my patients to know they’re in the driver’s seat—always—when it comes to making decisions about their care.”

MEET JAMES KELLEY, DO

There’s no doubt that the center of Dr. Kelley’s universe is his wife and three daughters. “My goal every day is to make them proud of me,” he said. “My wife, Rebecca, has been by my side since even before I started medical school. We’ve been blessed to build an amazing life in this incredible community with our three beautiful and sassy little girls.”

The family loves exploring around the DFW area and investigating new local restaurants, outdoor patio spaces, and hanging out at local parks. “Rebecca and I consider ourselves foodies and love trying to find fun, new, date-night dinner spots,” Dr. Kelley said.

When he’s not at work or enjoying family time, Dr. Kelley can be found volunteering with UNT Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine as a urology specialty advisor. He also welcomes undergraduate and medical students to shadow him and get a feel for day-to-day life as a urologist. He and his family and members of Creekwood Church in Mansfield.

“I make it one of my top priorities to treat others the way I’d want my family and I to be treated,” he said. “I want to treat every patient that I meet like they’re a member of my family, and I want my patients to feel like they can rest assured that any time we’re discussing treatment options I’m presenting the options I’d want for my own family and friends.”

If you’re experiencing any problems with your genitourinary system, genital tract, or reproductive system, it’s important for you to be seen by a professional so you can be diagnosed and treated as quickly and as efficiently as possible. At the first sign of any issues with your body, you should give Texas Center for Urology a call.

AT TEXAS CENTER FOR UROLOGY, DR. JAMES KELLEY TREATS AND MANAGES A WIDE VARIETY OF UROLOGIC ISSUES INCLUDING:

• Male and Female Bladder Complaints

• Kidney Stones

• Urologic Cancers

• Hormone Deficiencies

• Vasectomy

• Men’s Health

• Urinary Incontinence

• Prostate Problems

• Erectile Dysfunction

• Urinary Tract Infections

DID YOU KNOW?

An article in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association put forth the idea that riding a rollercoaster can help “coax out” a kidney stone. After taking 20 rides on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disney World in Orlando, Florida with a “3D-printed, transparent kidney” containing a synthetic stone, researchers concluded that taking a ride at the back of the coaster resulted in a passed stone 64% of the time while riding at the front helped pass the stone 17% of the time.

Hawkeye in seven Marvel films.

My Next Breath: A Memoir

Two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner was the second most googled person in 2023… and not for his impressive filmography. His searing portrayals on film ranged from an Iraq-based army bomb technician in The Hurt Locker to a Boston bank robber in The Town before he became heir to the Jason Bourne franchise (The Bourne Legacy). Amongst other iconic roles, he also captured hearts as fan-favorite comic book marksman

Yet, his otherworldly success on-screen faded to the periphery when a fourteen-thousand-pound snowplow crushed him on New Year’s Day 2023.

In this debut memoir, Jeremy writes in blistering detail about his accident and the aftermath. This retelling is not merely a gruesome account of what happened to him; it’s a call to action and a forged companionship between reader and author as Jeremy recounts his recovery journey and reflects on the impact of his suffering.

Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments

Posnanski writes of major moments that created legends and of forgotten moments almost lost to time. It’s Willie Mays’s catch, Babe Ruth’s called shot, and Kirk Gibson’s limping home run; the slickest steals, the biggest bombs, and the most triumphant no-hitters. But these are also moments raw with the humanity of the game, the unheralded heroes, the mesmerizing mistakes drenched in pine tar, and every story, from the immortal to the obscure, is told from a unique perspective. Whether of a real fan who witnessed it, or the pitcher who gave up the home run, the umpire, the coach, the opposing player — these are fresh takes on moments so powerful they almost feel like myth.

Three Days in June: A Novel

Gail Baines is having a bad day. To start, she loses her job — or quits, depending on whom you ask. Tomorrow her daughter, Debbie, is getting married, and she hasn’t even been invited to the spa day organized by the mother of the groom. Then, Gail’s ex-husband, Max, arrives unannounced on her doorstep, carrying a cat, without a place to stay, and without even a suit. But the true crisis lands when Debbie shares with her parents a secret she has just learned about her husband-to-be. It will not only throw the wedding into question but also stir up Gail and Max’s past.

MEDICAL AND INTERVENTIONAL PAIN MANAGEMENT WITH REGENCY PAIN AND THERAPY INSTITUTE

Dr. Mark Dirnberger is a board-certified physician in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. He specializes in acute and chronic pain management utilizing medical and interventional pain procedures, as well as OMM to provide pain relief, improve patient functionality, and restore quality of life for patients experiencing pain. He is currently accepting new patients.

GETTING YOU BACK TO THE LIFE YOU ENJOY

WHAT IS PAIN MANAGEMENT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The goal of pain management is to understand the origin of new or chronic pain conditions. Pain specialists are trained to perform a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s pain complaint and develop a detailed treatment plan using a multidisciplinary approach. The two main goals of pain management are to increase a patient’s functional ability and improve their quality of life. I believe education is the key to a successful treatment program. Since it is often not possible to completely eliminate a patient’s pain, I work to help them manage it effectively. By enabling a patient to understand their condition, it empowers them to become a member of our team. Thus, ensuring the patients treatment program provides them with the tools necessary to better manage their pain and enhance their quality of life.

WHAT TYPES OF TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE?

At Regency Pain and Therapy, we offer a variety of treatment options in our facility. I utilize Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) to help balance a patient’s musculoskeletal and connective tissue dysfunctions enabling the body to heal more completely. I provide interventional pain management procedures and joint injections. I also utilize non-opioid and opioid medication management dependent on the patient’s condition. We have a highly trained physical therapy department as well as an Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (ICR) to treat heart conditions such as angina, heart attacks, heart surgery and other cardiovascular conditions.

WHAT PAIN CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT?

During my 22-year career as a pain management physician, I have treated most

acute and chronic pain conditions. I have successfully managed spinal pain conditions of the neck and low back, neuropathic pain conditions including neuropathy and CRPS, most types of joint pain, myofascial/ musculoskeletal pain syndromes, as well as migraines and headaches. I treat pain associated with motor vehicle accidents and Workers Compensation injuries. If I am unable to manage a patient’s condition, I will work to get them to an appropriate specialist such as Neurology, Orthopedics, Rheumatology, and Surgery.

WHAT ARE YOUR PROFESSIONAL GOALS AS A PAIN SPECIALIST?

My primary mission is to improve my patients’ quality of life. I truly want my patients to be comfortable each day and to live the life they hope to achieve. I firmly believe in education and communication with my patients. I spend quality time with them which allows them to better understand their condition. Thus, leading to a more successful outcome as an active participant in their individual treatment program.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR SOCIETAL AND CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS?

I have always enjoyed giving back to my community and strive to put the needs of others before myself. I believe the greatest goal one can achieve is to be of service to others. I have been a preceptor to local medical students in my clinic each month for the past 18 years. Educating them on becoming upstanding physicians and contributing members to society. I participate at local charities such as Mission Arlington, Arlington Life Shelter and the Mansfield and Arlington animal shelters. I also served for six years on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas Board of Directors and had a 10-year match with Little Brother Eric.

PODIATRIST

IMAGINE YOURSELF PAIN FREE

AS A PODIATRIST, WHAT ARE SOME COMMON ISSUES YOU ADDRESS?

One of the common problems I address in my patients is heel pain which can be caused by any number of factors. Often, it’s plantar fasciitis. But heel pain can also occur as a result of a stress fracture or tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). Think of TTS like carpal tunnel syndrome but in your ankle. Many patients resign themselves to heel pain and consider it just a sign of aging. But no one should live with pain when they don’t have to. Each of these scenarios are easily treatable by a qualified podiatrist. Some of the other problems I commonly treat are bunions, hammer toes, and Achilles pain.

HOW DO I KNOW IT’S TIME TO SEE A PODIATRIST?

If you’re suffering from an injury, it may get better with rest, ice, anti-inflammatories, and activity modification. But if you’re still experiencing pain or limitations even after these measures, it’s time to see a podiatrist. Podiatrists are experienced in problems and pathologies of the ankle as well as the foot including diabetic foot exams, fractures, heel pain, foot pain, ankle sprains, wounds, bunions, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis, ingrown toenails, and more.

I’VE BEEN LIVING WITH BUNIONS. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP ME?

If your bunion becomes painful, you should see a podiatrist. Again, why live with pain for a treatable condition? Unfortunately, there are no reliable, scientifically tested measures to prevent a bunion from forming or worsening. But there are conservative measures you can take to help reduce the pain caused by a bunion. Some conservative

measures include, wider shoes, different shoes, padding, injections, and activity modification. In general, conservative measures are taken to reduce symptoms, but a podiatrist can help you correct them. There are literally over 100 surgical procedures to correct a bunion. However, in recent years we’ve learned that a bunion is formed in three different planes and actually, is a deformity of a joint more in the midfoot rather than a deformity next to the big toe. The medial prominence by the big toe is simply the clinical manifestation of the joint deformity.

HAVE YOU HAD GOOD LUCK WITH THESE PROCEDURES?

With older bunion procedures, up to 50% of bunions can return. With the new procedure called Lapiplasty, there’s a significant reduction in the number of bunions that “fall out of correction”. The reason there’s a reduced reoccurrence of bunions with Lapiplasty is that the new procedure treats the deformity by correcting the cause of the deformity, not simply trimming the bump off of the protruding bone.

Sometimes in the past, patients had a bunion procedure and the bunion deformity returned. This is because older procedures were not aimed at addressing the underlying cause of the bunion. Lapiplasty bunion correction can repair even bunion deformities that have returned.

Another advantage of the new technique is that a patient can walk the day of surgery. The advancements in bunion correction technology have allowed for superior stability of the bunion correction. This is also another benefit that reduces the recurrence of bunion deformities.

COSMETIC DENTIST

COSMETIC DENTISTRY FOR THE SMILE YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED
I’M RELUCTANT TO SMILE BECAUSE I HATE THE LOOK OF MY TEETH. CAN PORCELAIN VENEERS HELP?

Veneers are a great option for correcting gaps between your teeth, stains, or badly shaped or crooked teeth leaving you with the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. Porcelain veneers are basically thin shells of ceramic that bond directly to the front and top surfaces of your teeth. Once there, they perfectly mimic your natural teeth—only better. Veneers have become increasingly popular due to their simplicity and versatility.

WILL THEY REALLY LIKE MY NATURAL TEETH?

Absolutely, or strength and appearance, their resemblance to healthy, white tooth enamel is unsurpassed by other restorative options. When bonded to your teeth, the ultra-thin porcelain veneers are virtually undetectable. They’re also highly resistant to coffee, tea, or even cigarette stains. Because they’re thin, light can shine through them and they take on the natural color of the underlying tooth. And with proper care, porcelain veneers will brighten your smile for well over a decade.

I HAVE A COUPLE TEETH THAT ARE BEYOND HOPE. ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS A GOOD OPTION?

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts placed into your jawbone wherever teeth are missing. Once there, they provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. Implants give you the ability to eat virtually anything and to smile with confidence, knowing your teeth appear natural and

your facial contours are preserved. Your natural bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE IMPLANT PROCESS?

For most patients, the placement of dental implants will involve two surgical procedures. During the first procedure, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone and you should be able to wear a temporary tooth or teeth and eat a soft diet. After the implant has integrated into the bone, a permanent restoration is made. The entire procedure takes from two to four months and most patients don’t experience any disruption to their life.

I’M A MAJOR DENTAL CHICKEN. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP RELIEVE MY ANXIETY?

You’re definitely not alone. But many of my patients find that nitrous oxide offers them a pleasant level of sedation, within 30 seconds to four minutes, and often a numb feeling in your cheeks and gums. After the gas is adjusted to the appropriate dose, and you’re relaxed and sedated, I can comfortably administer an anesthetic injection, if you require one. After treatment is completed, I’ll administer pure oxygen for you to breathe for about five minutes, during which all the effects of sedation will be reversed. Another option is sedation dentistry. Under sedation most patients feel no discomfort and afterwards have little to no memory of their visit.

HORMONE PELLET THERAPY

HORMONE

PELLET THERAPY: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

WHAT IS HORMONE PELLET THERAPY?

Hormone pellet therapy is a form of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) that uses tiny, custom-compounded pellets inserted just under the skin to release hormones gradually over time. These pellets contain either estrogen, testosterone, or a combination, and mimic the body’s natural hormone levels more closely than synthetic versions.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR HORMONE PELLET THERAPY?

Men and women experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalance may be good candidates. These symptoms can include:

• Fatigue or low energy

• Mood swings or irritability

• Low libido

• Weight gain

• Trouble sleeping

• Mental fog or memory loss

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS COMPARED TO OTHER FORMS OF HORMONE THERAPY?

Pellet therapy offers several advantages:

Steady hormone levels: Unlike pills or creams that can cause fluctuations, pellets release hormones consistently.

• Convenient: No daily medications or messy gels—just one treatment every few months.

• Customized: Each pellet is tailored to your body’s specific needs based on lab results.

• Improved symptom relief: Many patients report better mood, energy, and sexual function within weeks.

HOW ARE THE PELLETS ADMINISTERED?

The procedure is quick and performed in a medical office. A healthcare provider numbs a small area (usually the upper hip or buttock), makes a tiny incision, and inserts the pellet under the skin. The incision is closed with a small bandage—no stitches needed. The pellet then slowly releases hormones into the bloodstream over the next 3–6 months.

HOW SOON WILL I NOTICE RESULTS FROM HORMONE PELLET THERAPY?

Most patients notice improvements within 7 to 10 days after pellet insertion, though full results typically take 2 to 4 weeks to develop. Benefits often include increased energy, better sleep, enhanced mood, mental clarity, and improved libido. Since the therapy delivers a steady, consistent hormone level, many people report a smoother, more natural improvement compared to other forms of hormone replacement.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO GET HORMONE PELLET THERAPY?

On average, men and women receive pellet therapy every 3 to 4 months, while men typically need it every 5 to 6 months. The exact timing depends on your hormone levels, how your body metabolizes the pellets, and how long symptom relief lasts for you. Regular follow-up appointments and lab work help your provider fine-tune your treatment schedule to keep you feeling your best.

ARE THE HORMONES USED IN PELLETS NATURAL?

Yes, the hormones are bioidentical, meaning they are chemically identical to those produced by your body.

COSMETIC SURGEON

RECLAIMING CONFIDENCE: THE 2025 GUIDE TO MOMMY MAKEOVERS

WHAT IS A “MOMMY MAKEOVER”?

A Mommy Makeover is a customized set of cosmetic surgical procedures designed to restore and enhance a woman’s body after pregnancy and childbirth. It typically focuses on rejuvenating the breasts and abdomen, the areas most affected by pregnancy.

WHAT COSMETIC SURGICAL PROCEDURES ARE PERFORMED DURING A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

about the expert

MICHAEL L. THORNTON, DO, FACOS

MANSFIELD COSMETIC SURGERY CENTER

Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center was established in 2008 under the surgical directorship of Dr. Michael L. Thornton, a fellowship-trained, double board-certified Cosmetic Surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Thornton is highly specialized in providing various procedures in facial plastic surgery, cosmetic breast surgery, body contouring surgery and liposuction, post-bariatric after weight loss surgery, and non-surgical aesthetic skin rejuvenation from his medical spa.

A Mommy Makeover commonly includes procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), mini tummy tuck, breast augmentation with or without a breast lift (mastopexy), breast reduction, and buttock fat grafting (Brazilian Butt Lift). These procedures are often performed simultaneously during a single operation, allowing for one comprehensive recovery period.

HOW DOES A MOMMY MAKEOVER PROCEDURE IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF MY TUMMY?

A tummy tuck addresses the entire abdominal area, focusing on the muscles, skin, and fat. During the procedure, an incision is made just above the lower pubic area, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and excess skin is removed. This helps eliminate loose or sagging skin, reduce stretch marks, and create a flatter, firmer abdominal contour. Liposuction may also be used to remove stubborn fat pockets from the abdomen, flanks, and back.

WHAT BREAST ENHANCEMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE WITH A MOMMY MAKEOVER PROCEDURE?

Breast enhancement is a central component of many Mommy Makeovers. For women with sagging breasts following pregnancy or breastfeeding, a breast lift (mastopexy) can restore a more youthful shape. If volume

loss is a concern, saline or silicone breast implants can be placed to restore lost volume. In some cases, a simultaneous breast lift and augmentation are combined for optimal reshaping and fullness.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME FOLLOWING A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

Recovery varies depending on the combination of procedures performed and your overall health. Most patients can resume light activities within 10 to 14 days, although strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for 6 to 8 weeks. Full recovery and final results typically emerge over 4 to 6 months. Always follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions and attend follow-up visits for the safest and best outcome.

ARE THERE ANY EXCITING NEW ADVANCEMENTS IN MOMMY MAKEOVER PROCEDURES FOR 2025?

Yes, 2025 has introduced several exciting innovations that are enhancing the results and recovery experience of Mommy Makeovers. One notable advancement is high-definition liposuction, often using VASER or ultrasound-assisted technology, which allows surgeons to sculpt more defined and athletic-looking contours around the abdomen and waist. In addition, radiofrequency-assisted skin tightening devices like Renuvion and Cutera’s Secret PRO RF are being used to help firm and contract the skin after liposuction or mini tummy tucks, making them ideal for women with mild to moderate skin laxity. Ultrasound-guided Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is also significantly improving patient safety and surgical outcomes by allowing real-time visualization of the fat injection process. By enhancing accuracy and control, ultrasound-guided gluteal fat grafting supports safer procedures and more consistent, natural-looking results.

ORTHOPEDIC JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGEON

DON’T JUST LIVE WITH CHRONIC PAIN

I’M CONSIDERING JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY. HOW MUCH IMPROVEMENT CAN I TRULY EXPECT?

Most patients who choose joint replacement surgery experience significant pain reduction and improvement in ability to do everyday activities – both of which contribute to improved quality of life. It’s also important to remember that once surgery is complete, it’s up to you to perform all postoperative therapy as instructed by your surgeon to ensure optimal improvement.

The decision to undergo any type of surgery should only come after careful discussion with a trusted surgeon and only after the two of you have exhausted all non-operative care options. The specialized surgeons at AOA and Baylor Scott & White Orthopedic and Spine Hospital – Arlington have consistently scored at the top of North Texas hospital systems for providing excellent, cutting-edge care with the lowest complication rates.

ARE THERE NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT?

Robotic surgery has been well established for over two decades and the Total Joint Replacement specialists at AOA work diligently to stay ahead of current and new technologies. Robot-assisted surgery gives your surgeon greater precision and control over the surgical instruments, meaning

smaller incisions, minimal scarring and shorter recovery time – and often reduced pain. All of this leads to better overall patient satisfaction.

HOW SOON SHOULD I START PHYSICAL THERAPY?

In general, formal physical therapy starts the day of surgery for knee replacements and can range six to eight weeks. For hip replacements, therapy is generally two to four weeks. The job of a physical therapist is to teach you how to perform the exercises you need so you feel confident doing them on your own at least twice every day. Once your formal therapy is complete, you will need to continue the exercises for the next few months.

I HEARD KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY IS PAINFUL?

At AOA, we utilize a specific multimodal pain regime – meaning we use various methods to help with pain control. The goal is to decrease your swelling, which helps with pain, range of motion and a faster recovery. In general, we encourage using ice and compression as an integral part of your pain control regime. Additionally, our anesthesiologists specialize in managing orthopedic care and perform regional nerve blocks, which can dramatically help reduce post-operative pain and reliance on narcotic pain medication.

CHIROPRACTOR

NOT JUST FOR BACK PAIN—FOR LIFE

WHAT KINDS OF CONDITIONS CAN BE HELPED THROUGH CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT?

about the expert

BACK 2 WELLNESS CHIROPRACTIC

Michael Bank uses chiropractic to improve his patients’ health and wellness, whether they’re experiencing back pain or neck pain or just want to feel better when they wake up in the morning. In addition to his doctorate in chiropractic, he’s certified in brain traumatology and whiplash injuries.

Chiropractic care isn’t just for back pain. It’s effective in treating a wide variety of conditions. Chiropractic can offer improved mobility, enhanced function, and a drugfree alternative to pain management. It’s highly effective for conditions ranging from asthma to PMS, from headaches to carpal tunnel. Chiropractic care is also important for injury recovery and rehabilitation, following auto accidents, falls, and other personal injuries and for help finding relief from repetitive use injuries and even respiratory function.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

A better question might be who can’t! Anyone from infants to senior adults, children, athletes, men, and women can benefit from chiropractic care. Chiropractic can help seniors remain active and prevent falls which are a big issue for older people. A chiropractor can assess your posture and gait and use spinal manipulation to improve your musculoskeletal alignment and your allimportant balance.

Anyone—of any age—who spends time working on a computer can benefit from chiropractic care. In addition to adjusting your spine, a chiropractor can advise you on ergonomic workstations and exercises to decrease back or neck pain, headaches or eye strain, and proactively head off future problems. Regular chiropractic care during childhood may prevent problems that many adults experience later in life. Athletes—from pros to weekend warriors— should make chiropractic a routine part of their lives.

HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC DIFFER FROM CONVENTIONAL

MEDICINE?

Like conventional medicine, chiropractic is based upon scientific principles of diagnosis through testing and empirical observations and rigorous training and clinical experience for the practitioner. Unlike conventional medicine, which focuses on attempting to treat disease once it occurs, chiropractic is designed to improve the health and wellness and avoid illness in the first place. Also, chiropractors are the only professionals trained to diagnose and treat spinal subluxations.

WHAT IS A SPINAL SUBLUXATION?

The word ‘subluxation’ comes from the Latin words meaning ‘to dislocate’ (luxare) and ‘somewhat or slightly’ (sub). So, the term ‘vertebral subluxation’ literally means a slight dislocation (misalignment) of the bones in the spine. Today the word ‘subluxation’ has changed in meaning to capture the complex of neurological, structural, and functional changes that occur when a bone is ‘out of place.’ Chiropractors usually refer to subluxations of the spine as the “Vertebral Subluxation Complex”, or “VSC” for short.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY CHIROPRACTIC IS “HOLISTIC”?

Chiropractic is so much more than simply a means of relieving pain. The chiropractic approach is holistic, addressing your overall health. Many lifestyle factors impact your health such as exercise, diet, rest, stress, and environment. For this reason, chiropractors spend time talking to their patients about changes they can make to achieve optimal wellness. The goal of chiropractic treatment is to restore the body to its natural state of optimal health. As a chiropractor, I want to do everything humanly possible to make my patients feel better and allow them to live their life.

INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL PLANNING

HERE TO HELP LIFE GO RIGHT

MY HUSBAND AND I RECENTLY BOUGHT OUR FIRST HOME. HOW DO WE KNOW HOW MUCH INSURANCE IS ENOUGH?

Congratulations, you’re living the American dream. But stuff happens. When it does, it’s vital that your home and the possessions within are protected against unexpected damage or catastrophe. You also want to have liability insurance in case someone stumbles and falls on your property. It’s time to sit down with an experienced insurance agent and let them advise you on the best coverage for you.

I’M A HAPPY STATE FARM CUSTOMER WHEN IT COMES TO MY CAR. BUT I RECENTLY PURCHASED A PRICEY KAYAK. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES YOU’D INSURANCE THAT AS WELL?

Actually, we do? There are many ways to get from Point A to Point B and State Farm is happy to insure your jet skis, trail bikes, truck campers, golf carts, and kayaks. We understand these items can represent a big investment and State Farm has you covered—whatever you drive—in more ways than one. We offer great savings options and attentive service. Plus, your coverage can be personalized, to include things like Emergency Roadside Service (ERS) coverage and car rental insurance. I’ve been in the insurance industry for 45 years. State Farm is the gold standard for customer service and stellar coverage. That’s why I opted to a State Farm Insurance and Financial Services agent years ago. And I’ve never looked back.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD WE REASSESS THAT COVERAGE?

Many people purchase homeowners insurance or renters insurance when they first move into their new home then pay little attention to their policy after that. That’s a mistake because over time, as you make renovations, purchase new items, or replace existing appliances, you may be leaving gaps in their coverage.

I recommend sitting down annually with your insurance agent to review your coverage. During that meeting, ask about discounts, review home renovations, discuss landscaping changes, share any changes in the appliances, and confirm that your home is insured for the estimated cost to rebuild. And if you combine your home and auto insurance, it’s a good idea to review your auto coverage at the same time.

WHAT’S THE BEST AGE TO RETIRE?

The answer is different for everyone. My goal early in life was to plan my finances so I could retire comfortably by the time I was 55. Through saving, budgeting, and investing, I did achieve that goal. Then I realized I enjoy working on my business, working with people, and making a difference in their lives. Like me, not all of my clients want to retire at 65. But it’s my job to help them get to the point where they can if they want to. An experienced financial advisor can help you sort through all the factors that go into making a wise decision about when to retire. You’re never too young to partner with that advisor and begin preparations for the retirement you want—whenever that is.

FAMILY DENTIST

BEYOND CPAP: TREATING SLEEP APNEA AT ITS SOURCE WITH DENTAL INNOVATIONS

HOW DOES DENTISTRY PLAY A ROLE IN TREATING SLEEP APNEA AND SNORING THAT MANY PEOPLE MIGHT NOT BE AWARE OF?

The root cause of sleep apnea often stems from underdeveloped jaws. Modern humans have significantly smaller facial structures than our ancestors, leaving insufficient space for the tongue and teeth. This restricted development creates narrower airways that contribute to breathing disorders. As dentists specializing in sleep medicine, we can utilize teeth as anchors to gradually develop the jaw and expand the airway space. Unlike temporary solutions like CPAP, dental interventions address the structural foundation of the problem, creating lasting anatomical improvements that enhance breathing both day and night.

HOW EARLY CAN SIGNS OF POTENTIAL SLEEP APNEA BE DETECTED IN CHILDREN, AND WHY IS EARLY INTERVENTION SO IMPORTANT?

Signs of potential sleep apnea can appear as early as at birth. Parents should be alert if their child struggles with difficulty of breast feeding, mouth breathing, ADHD symptoms, bed wetting, difficulty in school, mood swings, crowded teeth, teeth grinding, speech issues, snoring, or heavy breathing—all of which may indicate breathing disorders and poor sleep quality. Early intervention is crucial because we can utilize the child’s natural growth to improve jaw development and breathing patterns. Treating these issues during developmental years is significantly easier, faster, and more effective than addressing the damage after growth is complete. By intervening early, we can guide proper facial development, potentially avoiding more invasive treatments later in life

WHAT RECENT INNOVATIONS IN DENTAL TREATMENTS FOR SLEEP APNEA, SUCH AS LASER THERAPY FOR SOFT TISSUES, ARE SHOWING THE MOST PROMISE?

Laser treatment for soft palate and tonsil treatment has a great impact on patients who were looking for an alternative to surgery. Spouses are reporting reduction of snoring right away. Also, utilizing head and neck Cone Beam CT makes treatment more promising by allowing us to evaluate the skull precisely for accurate individualized treatment. These advanced imaging techniques help us identify specific anatomical restrictions and plan targeted interventions. Combined with our comprehensive approach to jaw development, these innovations enable us to address both structural and functional aspects of sleep-disordered breathing with greater precision and minimal discomfort for patients.

COULD YOU EXPLAIN HOW YOUR COLLABORATIVE APPROACH WITH OTHER HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS PROVIDES BETTER OUTCOMES FOR SLEEP APNEA PATIENTS?

The human body acts as one unit. Sleep apnea patients typically have multiple issues— body misalignment, poor tongue posture, chemical imbalances, and mental/ emotional distress. By collaborating with specialists like myofunctional therapists, chiropractors, nutritionists, and mental health professionals, we create comprehensive treatment plans addressing all contributing factors. This integrated approach leads to better outcomes because we’re optimizing overall wellness, not just treating isolated symptoms. Listen to Dr. Jung’s TEDxTalk to learn more about this whole-body approach.

THE BENEFITS OF GUT HEALTH

WHAT EXACTLY IS GUT HEALTH?

Gut health refers to the balance and function of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, particularly the trillions of microbes—called the gut microbiome—that live in your digestive system. A healthy gut efficiently digests food, absorbs nutrients, and supports immune function. It also plays a role in mood regulation and inflammation.

WHY IS GUT HEALTH IMPORTANT FOR OVERALL WELLNESS?

Your gut is often called the “second brain” because it communicates constantly with your central nervous system. A healthy gut helps with:

• Efficient digestion and nutrient absorption

• Hormone production (including serotonin, which affects mood)

• Immune system strength

• Inflammation control

When the gut is unbalanced—known as dysbiosis—it can lead to fatigue, poor digestion, skin issues, anxiety, or even chronic illness.

CAN GUT HEALTH AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH?

Yes, significantly. The gut produces up to 90% of the body’s serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, sleep, and anxiety. This gut-brain connection means that an unhealthy microbiome can contribute to depression, brain fog, and stress. Conversely, improving gut health has been shown to improve mood and mental clarity.

WHAT ARE SIGNS OF AN UNHEALTHY GUT?

Common signs include:

• Bloating, gas, or constipation

• Food intolerances

• Frequent colds or infections

• Skin conditions (acne, eczema)

• Brain fog or fatigue

• Mood swings or anxiety

• Sugar cravings

These symptoms suggest your microbiome might be imbalanced.

HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY GUT HEALTH NATURALLY?

There are several effective ways:

1. Eat more fiber (vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains) to feed good bacteria.

2. Include fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, kefir, and sauerkraut to introduce probiotics.

3. Avoid excessive sugar, alcohol, and processed foods, which feed harmful bacteria.

4. Stay hydrated to support digestion.

5. Manage stress, which can damage the gut lining.

6. Take a quality probiotic if recommended by a healthcare provider.

ARE THERE LONG-TERM BENEFITS TO MAINTAINING GOOD GUT HEALTH?

Absolutely. Over time, a healthy gut can:

• Reduce the risk of chronic conditions (like type 2 diabetes and heart disease)

• Promote clearer skin

• Improve weight management

• Enhance focus and energy levels

• Support healthy aging

SHOULD I TAKE SUPPLEMENTS FOR GUT HEALTH?

Supplements like probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and L-glutamine can help—but they work best when paired with a healthy diet. It’s best to consult with a nutritionist or doctor before starting any new regimen.

Men’s Health Month

DON’T DELAY YOUR DOCTOR VISITS

Avoiding an annual physical exam is not manly. Neither is it wise to dismiss symptoms that might be a red flag for a serious issue. This becomes increasingly true as men age. For example, recent studies show that younger people — men and women — are getting cancer at a higher rate than ever before. You are not immune because you are in your twenties or thirties.

So, no matter how good a man feels, he should get an annual exam. There are diseases and disorders such as prostate and colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, anemia, and high blood pressure that often do not have any obvious early warning signs or symptoms. Preventive care will enable a doctor to diagnose a medical issue early on so that treatment can be proactive and not reactive.

Men should give their healthcare providers a blueprint of their potential health issues by knowing their family history on both

sides of their family tree. Genetics plays an important role in predicting problems that may develop over time. It is essential to weigh family history against lifestyle habits such as a poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, and vaping.

Heart disease remains the No. 1 cause of death among men in the U.S., accounting for 24% of fatalities. Cancer ranks second at 22%. This should not come as a surprise, and neither has to be a death sentence if diagnosed early. A (PCP) will likely refer you to a cardiologist, gastroenterologist, urologist, or other specialist if bloodwork and routine office exams uncover suspicious results.

A primary care physician (PCP) will also ask their male patients about their mental health. How much stress do they feel? Are they happy in their job and home life? Are they getting enough sleep and giving themselves leisure time to spend with

family and friends? Are they depressed? Answering honestly is vital as a poor mental outlook can play a role in physical ailments, among them insomnia, ulcers, and other gastrointestinal disorders.

For married couples, medical experts encourage women to accompany their husbands to the doctor. In some cases, both may decide to have the same primary care physician and schedule their annual physical for the same day, and having a partner there could facilitate discussions about concerns.

All these rules apply to women, too. Still, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that women are 33% more likely to visit a doctor and 100% better at getting regular screening and preventative care than men.

If you have been delaying routine exams or avoiding current health issues, now is the time to put your health back on track and make an appointment today.

DRY EYES

SET YOUR SIGHTS ON VISION CARE

People don’t usually associate dry, itchy, burning, blurry, or excessively irritated eyes with a disease. But whether the cause of these symptoms is due to allergies or other environmental conditions, medications, getting older, long-time contact lens use, or too much time in front of a computer screen, dry eye disease, also known as dry eye syndrome, does impact how well you see.

Our eyes are built-in cameras, and how we see the world depends on how well they work. Still, many people neglect the symptoms that affect our vision and are a result of decreased tear production. So, like every other aspect of health care, the first step in maintaining your eyesight is getting a comprehensive annual exam with an optometrist, a doctor who provides basic care, from testing your vision to prescribing glasses or contact lenses if needed.

Older patients who might have more serious issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, a detached retina, which requires emergency surgery, and macular degeneration, will see an ophthalmologist, a medical and surgical specialist who treats diseases that

can lead to blindness. An ophthalmologist also performs Lasik corrective surgery and treats advanced cases of chronic dry eye disease.

For most people, however, dry, burning, and itchy eye irritation can be treated with over-the-counter drops, preferably those that do not contain preservatives. There are also ointments available, though they have a thicker consistency and should be used at night around bedtime. Anyone who has walked down the eye care aisle in a pharmacy knows there are a multitude of choices that provide temporary relief. You can also occasionally apply a warm, moist cloth over your eyes and periodically use “no more tears” baby shampoo to clean eyelids, which will relieve the discomfort.

For more advanced cases of dry eye syndrome, an ophthalmologist might insert punctal plugs, which are tiny devices inserted into tear ducts to block tears from draining, thus keeping eyes more lubricated. Permanent punctal plugs are often made of silicone while temporary

plugs that dissolve over time are usually made of collagen.

There are also prescription eye drops that offer more lasting relief. The three major brands are Restasis, MIEBO, and Xiidra, each formulated differently to produce the same relief for chronically dry eyes. The Food and Drug Administration has also approved a nasal spray called Tyrvaya, which, according to its literature, “activates a specific sinus nerve pathway, which increases tears produced in the eye.”

Even watery eyes are an example of the body compensating for a lack of tears. Thus, because the eyes are not producing enough lubricating tears, which cleanse and protect the eye, there is a greater chance of an infection and inflammation, which results in corneal abrasions and ulcers.

Remember that ignoring dry eye disease will only worsen the condition over time and could lead to partial and permanent vision loss in extreme cases. We should never lose sight of maintaining our eye health with a professional to see better for years to come.

TRENDS IN KITCHEN DESIGN

Your kitchen isn’t just a place to cook; it’s where life happens. With the following design trends, you can create a colorful, cozy, and stylish gathering place for family and friends to enjoy.

MIXED MATERIALS

Expect to see a shift toward more natural textures and finishes in kitchens this year, with mixed materials gaining momentum. While painted cabinets —especially in soft neutrals and bold, moody hues — continue to be popular, designers are increasingly incorporating wood to add depth and warmth. Think rich wood islands paired with sleek quartz countertops or white oak shelving breaking up rows of cabinetry for a layered, lived-in look. Wood is also making its way onto countertops, range hoods, and even backsplashes, creating a sense of organic balance. This blending of materials adds tactile interest and a sense of authenticity to the space, making kitchens feel more inviting and grounded.

COZY COMEBACK

Another trend taking center stage is the dining nook, complete with banquet seating. This intimate setup not only maximizes space but also creates a cozy corner perfect for everything from Sunday brunches to late-night chats. It’s a throwback to the kitchens of the past, where families gathered around the table to share stories and meals. Now, with modern twists like built-in charging stations and hidden storage, these nooks are both nostalgic and practical, and I love a good banquette because it allows you to bring fabric into your kitchen area.

POP OF COLOR

In 2025, homeowners and designers are embracing bold, colorful cabinets that infuse personality into the heart of the home. Think greens, blues, and even yellow. While neutrals will always have their place, more people are seeking out kitchens that reflect their unique style, swapping sterile for spirited with hues that pop.

ISLAND LIFE

Finally, let’s talk about the kitchen island — but not just any island. Today’s trends are all about conversational island seating. So instead of an island just having seating in a straight line, island seating is now shaped to enable conversation, because we know how often guests end up in the kitchen. Or, for that matter, your family has dinner on the island, or kids do homework there. This type of seating gives you a little more flexibility in that area.

From bold colors and warm wood accents to cozy nooks and conversation-friendly islands, these 2025 kitchen trends are all about blending beauty with functionality. Whether you’re planning a complete renovation or just refreshing a few key elements, now’s the time to reimagine the space that brings everyone together. Start cooking up your design plans today — the heart of your home deserves it.

TULSA RISING

WHERE THE PAST GLEAMS AND THE PRESENT SINGS

The sun sank low on the horizon as I drove into Tulsa, bathing the city’s Art Deco skyline in a warm, golden light, a shimmering testament to its oil-boom heritage. I’d heard stories of this gem along the Arkansas River, and now I was here on a mission — to explore Tulsa’s riches, from its stunning architecture and world-class museums to its lively music scene, delicious food, and bustling events.

ART DECO HOMAGE

I began downtown, which has compact, walkable neighborhoods, each with its own character. My journey started in the Deco District, where Tulsa’s Art Deco legacy unfurls like a history book in stone and glass. The Philcade Building, a marvel that began construction in 1929, greets me first. Its gilded T-shaped lobby, dripping in gold leaf and glazed terra cotta ornamentation, boasted a shopping arcade on the first two floors.

Under a mile away, the Boston Avenue United Methodist Church (BostonAvenue.org) stuns with its iconic tower topped with a stylized sculpture of two hands raised in prayer. A masterpiece that blends spirituality with Art Deco flair, the church features numerous terra cotta sculptures. Tulsa’s oil wealth in the early 20th century birthed these gems, and the widespread use of terra cotta in the city’s architecture earned it the nickname “Terra Cotta City.”

MUSEUM ODYSSEY

Museums beckoned next. The Discovery Lab (DiscoveryLab.org), a 57,000-square-foot interactive children’s museum, inspires young minds by combining math, music, science, engineering, technology, and play.

Located at Gathering Place (GatheringPlace.org), Tulsa’s nearly 100-acre park nestled along the scenic Arkansas River, be sure to visit Discovery Lab’s website for more information and to check out its events.

Closer to the arts district, the Philbrook Museum of Art (PhilBrook. org) dazzles me. Housed in a 1927 Italian Renaissance villa once owned by oil baron Waite Phillips, its manicured grounds beckon all to come and enjoy a variety of events and eclectic art collections — European paintings, Native American pottery, and modern works. A docent tells me Phillips gifted it to Tulsa in 1938, a legacy of generosity amid opulence.

Bob Dylan Center (BobDylanCenter.com), a newer shrine in the Tulsa Arts District. Dylan was deeply influenced by Woody Guthrie, a native Oklahoman and folk singer who was a significant figure in Tulsa. Dylan’s archives include lyrics scribbled on napkins and guitars weathered by time, revealing a city claiming its place in music lore.

MUSIC SCENE

Speaking of music, venues like BOK Center’s (BokCenter.com) glitzy arena and the historic Tulsa Theater (TulsaTheater.com) cater to every taste. Known as the birthplace of Western Swing, the city boasts the “Tulsa Sound,” a gritty blend of rock, blues, and country. Absorbing the Tulsa vibe, I caught an In Session happening at Church Studio (TheChurchStudio.com), where Leon Russell and JJ Cale crafted hits.

Cain’s Ballroom (CainsBallRoom.com), a 1924 dance hall where Bob Will (the king of Western swing) and the Texas Playboys began showcasing their sounds that synthesized ragtime, traditional fiddle tunes, New Orleans jazz, blues, Mexican songs, and big band swing. The worn wooden floor still hums with echoes of legends.

DINING OPTIONS

Tulsa’s culinary landscape mirrors its spirit — diverse, unpretentious, and proud. At Mother Road Market (MotherRoadMarket.com), considered Oklahoma’s first food hall, vendors offer up a blend of flavor profiles. From smoky barbecue ribs and spicy Mexican

street tacos to gourmet rice bowls and novelties like pickle pizza, there’s something for everyone’s palate.

The next day, I set my sights on Tulsa’s historic Blue Dome District (BlueDomeDistrict.com), known for its down-to-earth vibe, popular festivals, and a great selection of restaurants. After lunch, dessert at one of Tulsa’s artisan ice cream shops was in order, offering unique flavors that delight the taste buds.

CELEBRATE

Events and festivals seal the deal. I timed my visit to witness Tulsa Tough (TulsaTough.com), a three-day cycling extravaganza in early June that transforms the city into a two-wheeled spectacle. Thousands of riders, from amateurs to pros, tackle routes while spectators cheer them on and live bands play. The air buzzes with adrenaline, a testament to Tulsa’s active spirit.

Locals tell me I need to return to experience other festive gems, like Zeeko Oktoberfest (TulsaOktoberfest.org), ScotFest (Okscotfest.com) in nearby Broken Arrow, and the Tulsa Powwow (TulsaIndianClub.org). Each event stitches Tulsa’s heritage into a vibrant tapestry.

As night falls on my last day in Tulsa, I stand by the Golden Driller, a 76-foot statue guarding the Tulsa State Fairgrounds, his oil-derrick shadow, another nod to the city’s past. Standing there, reflecting on my visit, I wondered at Tulsa’s story of boom and bust, resilience and rhythm. From Art Deco spires to Cain’s twang, museum halls to festival cheers, it’s a place that lingers, urging you to stay a little longer.
