Welcome to our Women’s Health and Wellness issue. Now, I have a question for you. Are you up to date on your routine screenings? These proactive tests allow you and your provider to detect any issues early, when things are most treatable. Are you maintaining an active lifestyle even in our Texas heat? How about your diet? Personally, I like to adhere to an 80/20 rule where 80% of my wellness centers around the kitchen and fueling my body with optimum nutrition and 20% focuses on exercise. (You can’t exercise away a poor diet.)

And let’s not neglect our mental and spiritual health. As women, it’s easy to get so busy pouring into the lives of those we love that we neglect ourselves. Make self-care a priority. Block out time to be with friends and time to be alone. Be intentional about spending time in The Word and time in praise and worship with the Father. For me, it’s a great way to begin my day. But maybe evenings work better for you. Either way, those few precious minutes with the Lord can make all the difference in the rest of your day.

ALMOST SAVED

THE TRAGEDY WITHIN A FORGOTTEN PARABLE

And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable?

How then will you understand all the parables?” – Mark 4:13

Some teachers believe He was saying, This parable is so simple. If you don’t understand it, you won’t be able to understand any of the parables. But other teachers believe His words meant something very different. They believe that He was conveying to them that this particular parable, the Parable of the Sower, was a key to unlocking the other parables — that there was something crucial for them to understand within this parable.

The Parable of the Sower is one of only four parables that has been included in

three out of the four Gospel accounts.

As I consider the subject matter it deals with, I find myself leaning more and more towards the latter interpretation — that there is something extremely significant being taught in this story. I find myself believing more and more that there is a profound truth in this parable that, if one does not understand, may lead to their eternal demise. My greatest fear, though, is that we are not dealing with one who does not understand. We may in fact be dealing with an entire generation of professing believers who do not truly understand what was being conveyed in this little tale.

The Parable of the Sower is about a man who goes out to his field to sow seed in the ground in expectation of a harvest. As the man scatters the seed, it lands on four different types of ground. We know from Jesus’ explanation of the parable that the seed represents the Word of God, and the types of ground represent the hearts of men. Based on the type and condition of the ground (heart), there will be one of four outcomes.

Now before we get going, we must understand some fundamental principles of this parable and the four outcomes

involved. First and foremost, only one of the four outcomes represents genuine salvation in the heart of man. How do we know that? We know it because only one of the four results in a harvest (fruit). One of the most common and repeated themes taught by Jesus Himself, and reiterated throughout the New Testament, is that all true believers produce fruit. That fruit may vary in quantity and quality, but there is always fruit. Jesus said, “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, you will recognize them by their fruits.” (Matthew 7: 19–20). The fact that only one of the four outcomes represents genuine salvation also coincides with those difficult words of Jesus that few will find eternal life. (Matthew 7:14)

Secondly, the parable represents a progression in the responses. The first seed lands along the path and is immediately snatched away by birds. The second seed lands on rocky ground with no depth of soil. It springs up quickly but then withers away in the hot sun. The third seed goes even further. The implication is that a root is formed, and it begins to grow. But then it gets choked by the thorns and bears no fruit. The fourth seed is sown on good soil. It grows up and produces varying quantities of fruit.

For the purpose of this article, I want to focus on the middle two responses: the seed that fell on rocky ground, and the seed that fell among the thorns. Let’s look at what Jesus said about these two.

With regard to the seed that fell on the rocky ground, Jesus said these are the ones who immediately receive the word with joy, but then when persecution and affliction comes as a result of the Word, they immediately fall away. In the Matthew and Mark accounts, it says they endure for a while but then fall away. Luke uses a much more difficult word; they “believe for a while, but then, in time of testing, fall away.” They received the Word, believed the Word, and possessed joy because of the Word, but then fell away.

As for the seed sown among the thorns, it represents those who hear the Word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the Word, and it proves unfruitful. (Mark 4:19) These people have gone even farther than the first two. The seed was sown in soil with depth. Unlike the first two, a root had presumably formed. But then, as it began to grow, it was choked by the thorns growing up next

to it – the cares of the world, deceitfulness of riches, and desires for other things. These thorns kept it from producing fruit. We must deal with the words Jesus uses when describing these people. In the case of the rocky ground hearers, they hear the Word and immediately receive it with joy, but then they fall away. The implication is this. These are people who have experienced some type of spiritual enlightenment. You could say that their eyes were opened. They saw something they had not seen before. As Luke said, they possessed a type of belief. This new enlightenment gave them great joy Maybe they had some type of spiritual “experience” during worship one Sunday morning. Maybe they shed many tears. Maybe they heard a convicting message that was preached. Maybe they would say, “God spoke to me.” But then something happened; time passed. Affliction and tribulation came. Temptations came. And they fell away. They failed to bear fruit. What about those ones choked by the thorns? They had progressed even further. They heard the word of God and received it in their heart. We can only assume they also had joy. Unlike the rocky ground hearers, the implication here is that a root had formed within the soil. But then, something happened; time passed. How much time? Weeks? Months? Years? We do not know. But we know that as time passed, their hearts were choked — suffocated — by materialism. They became distracted by the cares and pursuits of this world. Did they outright reject the Word of God? No! They simply had competing allegiances in their heart; they desired “other things.” They started well. They had some sort of enlightenment. They were filled with joy. They possessed a type of belief. But in the end, it was choked. It failed to bear fruit.

Theologian J.C. Ryle put it this way…

“The seed which fell among thorns represents those who are not careless like the wayside hearer, nor insincere like the stony-ground hearer. They are those who have convictions, desires, and wishes... But they never come to the point of giving up all for Christ. The world is too much with them. They never get beyond a certain point in religion.” – J.C. Ryle

But does our modern theology today reflect the truths in this parable? I don’t think it does. The widespread belief today is that if someone has had some type of spiritual experience or enlightenment they must be saved; if their eyes have been

opened to see truth they didn’t see before, they must be saved. The belief is that if they heard God’s voice at one time in their life and responded with joy or tears, they must, in fact, be saved. The belief today is that if someone has experienced conviction of their sin or answered prayer, they must be saved. The predominant belief today is that the rocky ground hearers and the ones being choked by thorns represent true believers. They may be nominal, lukewarm, or backsliding believers, but true believers, nonetheless.

Let me be clear about what I am not saying. I am not saying that a true believer cannot fall into sin. I am not saying that the conversion of a soul is a process that takes place over a period of time. I am not saying salvation can be earned. And I am certainly not saying that a regenerated soul can lose their salvation.

What I am saying is this: the clear teaching of New Testament Scripture is that a man can experience spiritual enlightenment, hear God’s voice, have God answer their prayers, experience conviction of sin, and even respond with great emotion, without ever being regenerated. None of those things are reliable indicators of the regeneration of a soul. Our generation has drastically underestimated how far down the road “towards” salvation one can go, and yet still fail to apprehend salvation.

The teaching of Scripture is that while the conversion of a soul is instantaneous, the path towards that conversion may, in fact, be a process. And that process may involve much spiritual awakening and enlightenment along the way. It’s as if God is continually calling out to us – wooing us – in an effort to finally bring us to the point where we are ready to, as Ryle put it, “give up all for Christ.” I fear that the enemy has pulled over a great deception upon us, convincing many that the wooing of Christ is the same thing as the salvation of Christ, causing great multitudes to mistakenly think that finding the narrow gate is the same thing as squeezing through it.

DR. ARSHANAPALLI BLENDS PRECISION AND COMPASSION AT UNITED DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES

This summer’s cover features a dermatologist whose work touches lives far beyond the exam room. Dr. Ashish Arshanapalli, board-certified Mohs surgeon and hair restoration expert at United Dermatology Associates (UDA), brings both surgical mastery and heartfelt care to every patient encounter. Whether performing delicate skin cancer excisions or helping patients reclaim confidence through hair restoration, he leads with expertise and empathy.

A SURGEON’S FOCUS, A FATHER’S CARE

At UDA’s Mansfield office, Dr. Arshanapalli leads a thriving Mohs surgery program, treating skin cancers with a meticulous approach designed to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible. Using a technique that removes cancer cells layer by layer while examining margins microscopically, Mohs

surgery delivers cure rates up to 99% for many types of skin cancer. For sensitive areas like the face, ears, or scalp, it’s often the safest and most cosmetically sound option.

“Skin cancer treatment is a high-stakes endeavor,” he explains. “We’re not just removing disease; we’re preserving function and appearance, especially on the face. Patients come to us scared. Our job is to guide them through this with compassion and clarity.”

As a father himself, Dr. Arshanapalli understands the emotional toll a diagnosis like skin cancer can take.

“Being a parent reminds you to meet every patient where they are—not just medically, but emotionally. That personal connection is part of healing.”

HAIR RESTORATION WITH NATURAL RESULTS

Beyond skin cancer, Dr. Arshanapalli also leads UDA’s hair restoration services, using the advanced SmartGraft® FUE system. This minimally invasive technique moves individual follicles to restore fullness to the scalp without the linear scarring left by older methods. The result? Permanent, natural-looking hair that restores more than just appearance—it restores confidence.

“The success of a hair transplant lies in its subtlety,” he says. “No one should ever look at you and think, ‘You had something done.’ They should just notice you look great.”

RADIATION WITHOUT SURGERY: SRT FOR SKIN

CANCER

For those who aren’t ideal candidates for surgery, UDA also offers Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT), a non-invasive treatment for basal and squamous cell carcinomas. Administered over several sessions, SRT uses gentle, targeted energy to destroy cancer cells while leaving surrounding skin unharmed.

At the heart of UDA’s SRT program is Vy Tran, BS RT(T), a highly trained radiation therapist who joined the practice in 2018. After earning her Biology degree from the University of Dallas and completing her clinical training at UT Southwestern, Vy found her calling not only in science, but in patient relationships.

“Most of my patients come in three to four times a week over several weeks, so we naturally spend a lot of time together,” she explains. “What begins as small talk about how they’re feeling or weekend plans often deepens into something more meaningful. By the end of treatment, we’ve built a connection that often lasts long after the appointments end. That’s what I value most—helping patients through a difficult time with both skill and empathy.”

MEDICAL EXCELLENCE MEETS AESTHETIC EXPERTISE

The Spa at UDA, located in the Mansfield office, offers an elevated experience for those seeking cosmetic rejuvenation. Services include HydraFacials, microneedling, Ultherapy, CO₂ laser treatments, body sculpting with Emsculpt® and CoolSculpting®, and injectables like Botox, Dysport, Sculptra, and a variety of dermal fillers. All treatments are performed by skilled medical professionals in a calming, luxurious environment.

Whether your goal is smoother skin, refined contours, or simply a moment of self-care, UDA’s aesthetic team delivers natural-looking results tailored to your needs.

NOW IN EULESS AND PALESTINE, TX – AND STILL GROWING!

With the recent additions of new offices in Euless and Palestine, UDA continues its commitment to making expert dermatological care accessible across North Texas and East Texas. Whether you’re seeking a routine skin check, advanced cancer care, or cosmetic rejuvenation, UDA’s network of skilled providers is here to help.

FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY

DONNA SMIEDT

I’M EXCITED TO MOVE INTO MY NEW ROLE AS MENTOR

There’s a lot an attorney needs to know that no law book or law school lecture can teach, lessons that can only be gleaned through years in the legal trenches. Top Attorney for many consecutive years, as well as the coveted title of a “Texas Superlawyer”, a distinction reserved just for 10% of practitioners whom are voted on as such by their peers. She has been awarded many other awards that are too numerous to be listed. Suffice it to say that she is highly regarded by her colleagues as an exceptional family law litigator. Tarrant County Attorney Donna Smiedt has spent 40 years as a Board-Certified Family-Law Attorney learning real-world lessons about courtroom procedures and etiquette, connecting with clients, forging professional relationships, the nuances of firm culture, navigating ethical dilemmas, and the many “unwritten rules” involved in a successful law career. While learning these lessons, she’s positively impacted the lives of thousands of clients and her staff as well.

After four decades, Donna feels it’s time to pay it forward offering guidance, support, practical advice, and her years of experience to those coming up behind her as they transition from the theoretical learning of law school to the practical demands of a legal profession. She’ll be doing just that as

“AFTER 40 YEARS OF PRACTICE, I’M EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEW CHAPTER.”
– BY DONNA SMIEDT

MEET DONNA SMIEDT

Donna established her law firm in Arlington 40 years ago and has happily practiced as a solo practitioner, building her law firm and welcoming associates. Over four successful decades, she was named “Top Family Law Attorney” as she provided expert legal counsel on areas including divorce, child custody, paternity, adoption, and other family law matters.. She and her staff built a reputation for offering the same attention to detail to their smallest, uncontested divorce as they did to a multimillion- dollar, complex estate division.

“This county has been good to me, and I’ve been honored to represent my clients, often at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives,” she said. “After 40 years of practice, I’m excited about this new chapter. I’ve known David Cook for years and have grown to greatly respect him. As former Mayor of Mansfield and now a State Representative, he cares deeply about this area and the people who call it ‘home’.

David is a fellow Board-Certified FamilyLaw Attorney, and I know what matters to me matters to him. Knowing him the way I do, I knew this would be a good fit.” It’s a win/win as Donna is able to hand over the admin worries of running a firm and concentrate on providing the best representation she can to her clients while mentoring these remarkable young attorneys. “David has built an outstanding and energetic staff and I’m so impressed with the seamless way they run this firm,” Donna said. “Now, he can focus on representing us in Austin knowing I’m taking care of things here and I can trust that every detail of running the firm are being handled. It’s rewarding for me to watch these talented, young lawyers flourish and know I’ve had a hand in their success.”

Donna is still accepting new cases that can still be found at ArlingtonDivorces.com.

Consider Yourself Kissed

When she first meets Adam, Coralie is new to London and feeling adrift. But Adam is clever, witty, and (he insists) a quarter inch taller than the average male. His charming fouryear-old daughter only adds to his appeal.

But ten years on, something important is missing from the life Coralie and Adam (though, let’s face it, mostly Coralie) have built. Or maybe, having gained everything she dreamed of, Coralie has lost something else she once had: herself.

Set against an eventful decade, Consider Yourself Kissed puts the subjects of love and family on a grand stage, showing how the intimate dramas in our homes inescapably compete for energy and attention with the shared public dramas of our times.

It’s a read that effortlessly balances sweetness with bite, the public with the personal, and humor with heart.

ORTHODONTIC HEALTH

Ensuring a Confident Smile

WOMEN FACE UNIQUE ORTHODONTIC CHALLENGES DUE TO VARIOUS FACTORS, SUCH AS HORMONAL CHANGES DURING PUBERTY, MENSTRUATION, PREGNANCY, AND MENOPAUSE. THESE HORMONAL FLUCTUATIONS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO ORAL HEALTH ISSUES, INCLUDING GUM DISEASE, JAW PAIN, AND SHIFTING TEETH. LIKEWISE, HORMONAL CHANGES CAN LEAD TO WEAKENED TOOTH ENAMEL, MAKING WOMEN MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO CAVITIES AND DECAY.

Seeking orthodontic treatment can help address these concerns and prevent future complications, ensuring a healthy smile throughout different stages of a woman’s life.

Here are some health-related advantages that one can gain from orthodontic treatments.

IMPROVED ORAL HYGIENE

Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, making oral hygiene practices more effective. Misaligned or crowded teeth can create hard-to-reach areas where plaque and food particles accumulate, increasing the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. Women can correct these issues by undergoing orthodontic treatments, such as braces or aligners, and improve their oral health significantly. Straightening teeth makes brushing and flossing more efficient

and prevents future dental problems, ensuring a healthier smile in the long run.

ALLEVIATION OF JAW PAIN AND HEADACHES

Misaligned teeth and a flawed bite can lead to temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD), causing chronic jaw pain, headaches, and even neck and shoulder discomfort. Orthodontic treatments can help correct the bite and align the jaw, relieving the strain on the temporomandibular joint and reducing associated pain. By addressing these orthodontic issues, women can experience improved jaw function, reduced discomfort, and enhanced quality of life. Orthodontics offers a valuable solution for those seeking relief from TMJD symptoms.

DIGESTION AND

NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS

Proper dental alignment and a balanced bite are crucial for chewing and digestion.

Malocclusion, or an improper bite, can hinder the chewing process and lead to inadequate food breakdown, impacting digestion and nutrient absorption. Orthodontic treatments realign the teeth, improving the bite and ensuring the chewing process is efficient. By facilitating proper digestion, women can maximize the absorption of vital nutrients, leading to improved overall health.

Women’s orthodontics encompasses more than just cosmetic improvements. By opting for orthodontic treatments, women can enjoy a host of health-related benefits, including improved oral hygiene, reduced risk of dental issues, relief from jaw pain and headaches, and enhanced digestion. Prioritizing orthodontic care is a proactive step towards achieving a confident smile while ensuring optimal oral health and overall well-being.

DID YOU KNOW?

• More than 40% of women have some form of varicose vein condition, including spider veins. The likelihood increases with age so that up to 80% of women will be affected by age 80.

• Spider veins are more common than varicose veins.

• It’s uncommon to have just one varicose vein.

SPIDER & VARICOSE VEINS

Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options

DID YOU KNOW WOMEN ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO GETTING VARICOSE AND SPIDER VEINS THAN MEN?

HIGHER LEVELS OF THE FEMALE HORMONES ESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE MAY WEAKEN VEINS, CAUSING THEM TO STRETCH, MAKING IT MORE LIKELY FOR SPIDER AND VARICOSE VEINS TO FORM.

OTHER CAUSES OF VARICOSE AND SPIDER VEINS

Other factors contribute to the formation of varicose and spider veins, including:

Being Overweight - Excess weight places additional stress on the circulatory system. Vessels must work harder to deliver, distribute, and return blood to the heart, which can eventually lead to damage and result in spider and/or varicose veins.

Age – Although varicose veins can appear at any age, increasing age is a risk factor due to the wear and tear of time on the vein valves that regulate blood flow.

Genes – If a family member had spider or varicose veins, you are more likely to develop them as well.

Sedentary Lifestyle – According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, sitting or standing for

extended periods can cause blood to pool in the leg veins. This increases the pressure within the veins, which may cause them to stretch, weakening vein walls and damaging the valves.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS

Although varicose and/or spider veins may be visible, a complete diagnosis using noninvasive, high-resolution ultrasound imaging maps the venous system and reveals the extent of the disease lying deep beneath the skin.

Armed with this knowledge, your physician may use a holistic treatment approach that includes both lifestyle components as well as targeted, minimally invasive treatment. These treatment options involve sealing the vein shut using various methods, which causes the blood to reroute and circulate to healthy veins. The collapsed, treated

vein is gradually absorbed by the body and fades away.

Sclerotherapy and microsclerotherapy involve injecting a small amount of solution into the vein that closes it.

Endovenous ablation therapy (ELA), also known as EVLA or EVLT, involves inserting a small catheter that delivers laser light into the vein. The vein heats up and collapses.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) delivers RF heat into the vein through a thin, flexible tube, so it collapses.

Adhesive ablation involves using a small amount of a medical adhesive to seal the treated vein shut.

Whether you have varicose or spider veins, talk to your doctor about all your options. Ask what they recommend and why so you can make an informed decision.

HEARING HEALTH

How to Diagnose and Treat

DID YOU KNOW?

• Women are more likely to talk about their hearing loss and seek help than men.

• Hearing loss is twice as common in people with diabetes than in those without.

• Cardiovascular disease that affects circulation can affect your hearing.

• Current smokers are more likely to suffer from hearing loss than nonsmokers.

ALTHOUGH MEN ARE ALMOST TWICE AS LIKELY AS WOMEN TO SUFFER FROM HEARING LOSS, DON’T BE TEMPTED TO BRUSH IT OFF AS A MALE-ONLY ISSUE. UP TO ONE-THIRD OF WOMEN IN THEIR 50S AND ALMOST TWO-THIRDS IN THEIR 60S HAVE SOME DEGREE OF HEARING IMPAIRMENT.

HEARING AND HORMONES

Hearing loss can be due to hereditary factors, aging, trauma, lifestyle, recreational, and occupational choices. Chronic health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease also affect hearing. Further supporting the total body connection, studies indicate that female hormones may contribute to hearing problems, suggesting that estrogen may protect the inner ear. Even hormonal and circulatory changes during pregnancy can create temporary hearing impairment.

PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL EFFECTS

Untreated hearing loss can have a serious psychological and social impact. Unable to hear clearly, people become less likely to interact with others and participate in social activities. This can lead to depression, anxiety, isolation, difficulty maintaining relationships, and feelings of anger and loneliness. Equally troubling is the mounting

evidence that hearing loss is a major risk factor for cognitive decline, contributing to dementia.

These issues and more highlight the importance of early intervention, although according to the National Institutes of Health, people often wait 10 years or more from the time they first notice a problem before seeking help.

DIAGNOSING AND TREATING HEARING LOSS

Sensorineural hearing loss, where the inner ear or the hearing nerve itself becomes damaged, is the most common type. Fortunately, hearing aids are often helpful.

The first step is to undergo a comprehensive in-office audiology evaluation with a licensed audiologist. If results indicate that hearing aids will be beneficial, the next step is selecting the hearing aids that will best address your needs and budget, and there are a variety to choose from.

Technology has advanced tremendously, so even the most basic digital hearing aids currently available are far better than the best hearing aids on the market decade or two ago. Aesthetically discreet, highly programmable, and feature-rich, today’s hearing aids can use artificial intelligence (AI), are Bluetooth enabled, connecting to smartphone apps and other devices, offer digital, wind, and impulse noise reduction, have rechargeable batteries, and may even include tinnitus (ringing in the ears) masking features.

While a diagnosis of hearing loss isn’t something you hope for, treating it can lead to a better quality of life with improved communication, psychological well-being, cognitive health, and personal safety. It’s a good idea to get your hearing tested every three to five years, and seniors should see their audiologist annually.

COSMETIC SURGERY

Procedure Possibilites

DID YOU KNOW?

• Surgery for correcting facial injuries is believed to date back more than 4,000 years.

• In India, physicians employed skin grafts in reconstructive surgery as early as 800 B.C.

• During the Greco-Roman period, medical writer Aulus Cornelius Celsus detailed surgical methods for recon structing ears, lips, and noses.

• Early Byzantine writing chronicled reconstructive techniques for repairing facial defects.

COSMETIC SURGERY WON’T TURN YOU INTO SOMEONE ELSE AND WON’T SOLVE YOUR PERSONAL OR RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS, BUT IT SURE CAN BOLSTER YOUR SELF-CONFIDENCE AND ADD TO YOUR OVERALL WELLBEING. THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLASTIC SURGEONS LISTS THE FOLLOWING AS SOME COMMON WAYS WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES ARE DOING JUST THAT.

FACELIFT

Facelifts are a great way to repair sagging, loose, droopy, or wrinkled skin on the lower face and turn back the clock. During this procedure, facial tissues are lifted, excess skin removed, and skin replaced over repositioned contours. Facelifts are often performed with neck, forehead, or eyelid surgery and range from mini lifts to extended deep plane facelifts.

LIPOSUCTION

This is not intended as a weight-loss technique but as a way to improve the body’s shape by strategically removing localized fat deposits using a vacuum-suction technique. Liposuction can be performed on most parts of your body to reduce fat, often more than one at a time, and can also be used to remove fat tumors (lipomas) and address male gynecomastia.

TUMMY TUCK

Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck can improve the shape of your abdomen and your abdominal profile, removing excess fat and loose, sagging skin and restoring weakened or separated muscles. While it’s not a replacement for exercise and eating right and can’t eliminate stretch marks aside from those in the excess skin that’s removed, if you maintain your weight, tummy tuck results can be dramatic and permanent.

BREAST AUGMENTATION

This procedure is an ideal way for many women to increase the size or change the shape of their breasts with implants or their own fat. Breast augmentation isn’t the same as a breast lift or reduction, although it’s not uncommon for augmentations and lifts or reductions to be performed together.

HAIR TRANSPLANTATION

Both men and women can suffer from hair loss. Fortunately, hair transplantation surgery can improve the appearance of baldness. Different techniques are used to transplant hair, including follicular unit extraction (FUE) and the strip method. Ask your provider to explain the differences to decide which procedure suits you.

RHINOPLASTY

Also known as a “nose job,” this refers to any surgery that repairs or reshapes the nose. It may be performed for cosmetic or medical reasons, used to reduce the nose size, correct problems following an injury, address congenital disorders, relieve, or improve breathing problems, narrow the shape of the nostrils, or change the shape or angle of the nose.

UROLOGICAL HEALTH

Understanding, Prevention, and Care

DID YOU KNOW?

It’s time to schedule an appointment with a urologist if you’re experiencing:

• Pelvic pain or discomfort

• Urinary incontinence

• Blood in your urine

• Difficulty emptying your bladder

• Recurring kidney stones

• Overactive bladder

Scheduling routine urological checkups allows your urologist to monitor your condition, adjust your treatment plan when needed, and provide ongoing support and guidance.

UROLOGICAL HEALTH IS A VITAL ASPECT OF OVERALL WELL-BEING, YET IT OFTEN REMAINS OVERLOOKED, ESPECIALLY AMONG WOMEN. THE URINARY SYSTEM, INCLUDING THE KIDNEYS, BLADDER, URETERS, AND URETHRA, PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN MAINTAINING BODY BALANCE BY REMOVING WASTE AND EXCESS FLUIDS.

By understanding common issues and adopting preventive measures, women can maintain a healthy urinary system and enhance their quality of life.

UROLOGICAL ISSUES IN WOMEN

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): UTIs are highly prevalent in women, with many experiencing at least one infection in their lifetime. This is largely because women have shorter urethras, allowing bacteria to reach the bladder more easily. Symptoms include frequent urination, a burning sensation during urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pelvic pain.

Incontinence: Urinary incontinence can result from various factors such as weakened pelvic floor muscles, hormonal changes, or nerve damage. Stress incontinence occurs when physical activity or exertion puts pressure on the bladder, while urge incontinence is characterized by a sudden, intense urge to urinate.

Interstitial Cystitis: Also known as painful bladder syndrome, interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure, bladder pain, and sometimes pelvic pain.

Kidney Stones: These hard deposits form in the kidneys and can cause severe pain, nausea, and urinary issues. Risk factors include dehydration, consumption of specific foods, and family history.

Pelvic Prolapse: A condition where the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs weaken, causing one or more of these organs — such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum — to descend or press into the vaginal area. Symptoms can include a feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvis, discomfort during intercourse, urinary incontinence, and difficulties with bowel movements. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes and pelvic floor exercises to pessary devices and surgical interventions.

PREVENTION AND CARE

Hydration: Drinking plenty of water helps dilute urine and ensures that bacteria are flushed out of the urinary tract, reducing the risk of infections and kidney stones. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, adjusting for activity level and climate.

Hygiene: Proper hygiene, such as wiping from front to back after using the toilet, can prevent the spread of bacteria.

Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains supports overall health and can help prevent kidney stones. Limiting salt, caffeine, and alcohol can also reduce the risk of urinary issues.

Pelvic Floor Exercises: Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles through exercises like Kegels can help prevent and manage incontinence. These exercises are particularly beneficial after childbirth or during menopause.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Around 75% of menopausal women experience symptoms, with one-third reporting that they negatively affect their lives.

• Toxins in our environment and foods may disrupt our endocrine system and hormone production.

• Supplementation with hormone therapy can result in more relationship satisfaction with your significant other.

FEMALE HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

Combats Symptoms, Restores Quality of Life

HORMONES ARE POWERFUL CHEMICAL MESSENGERS PRODUCED BY OUR ENDOCRINE SYSTEM. TRAVELING THROUGH THE BLOODSTREAM TO TISSUES AND ORGANS, THEY HELP REGULATE MANY BODILY FUNCTIONS, INCLUDING METABOLISM, GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, ENERGY PRODUCTION, AND REPRODUCTION.

The endocrine system in women regulates vital functions through hormone-secreting glands. The pituitary gland controls reproductive hormones like FSH and LH, essential for the menstrual cycle and ovulation. The thyroid manages metabolism with T3 and T4, while the adrenal glands produce cortisol and aldosterone to handle stress and fluid balance. The ovaries secrete estrogen and progesterone, which are key to menstrual health, fertility, and mood. When hormones become imbalanced—whether due to stress, aging, or medical conditions—it can lead to fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, fertility issues, and other disruptions in overall health and wellbeing. Maintaining hormonal balance is essential for a woman’s physical, emotional, and metabolic health.

Significant changes due to decreasing estrogen and progesterone levels occur during perimenopause which generally starts between ages 40 to 45, menopause

(the average age for menopause is 51 in the U.S.), and continue through post-menopause. Symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, chills, chronic insomnia, mood swings, low libido, vaginal dryness, weight gain, thinning hair, dry skin, loss of breast fullness, feelings of depression and anxiety, and cognitive changes, including brain fog. Complications such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and urinary incontinence may also occur.

Laboratory tests are essential to hormone optimization and measure hormone levels in blood, urine, or saliva samples, and your provider may recommend hormone replacement therapy (HRT) based on the results and your health history. HRT treatment should not be approached from a one size fits all approach. Each patient should be given the options for management which include pills, creams, patches, injections, and pellets.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a gold standard in hormone

optimization. Bioidentical means hormones that are structurally identical to those your body produces prior to being deficient. Derived from plant-based sources such as soy and yams, BHRT is considered a natural treatment that is capable of producing desired results for symptom management and disease prevention.

BHRT should include regular hormone lab tests that are analyzed to determine the specific hormones and dosage your treatment plan should include and changes should be made as necessary based on symptom relief and change in health status. There is no reason to suffer with the symptoms of hormonal deficiency. We have more treatment options today than ever before to help combat the symptoms of female hormone imbalance and restore quality of life. Find a provider that will listen to your concerns, do the appropriate of labs, and put a focus on your vitality.

ORAL HEALTH

Oral Health is Linked to Overall Health

DID YOU KNOW?

• Periodontal disease is a risk factor for preterm and low birth weight babies.

• Gum disease risk increases with age, but can start at any age.

• You’re missing over 40% of tooth surfaces when you don’t floss.

• Gingivitis is preventable and reversible. Periodontitis isn’t, but can be improved and managed so it doesn’t progress.

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR ORAL HEALTH AND OVERALL HEALTH ARE INTERTWINED? RESEARCH INDICATES THAT GUM DISEASE HAS BEEN LINKED TO CARDIOVASCULAR AND RESPIRATORY DISEASES, STROKE, DIABETES, ALZHEIMER’S, RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, SOME CANCERS, AND MORE. WOMEN ARE ESPECIALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ORAL HEALTH ISSUES RESULTING FROM HORMONAL FLUCTUATIONS WHICH OCCUR DURING PUBERTY, PREGNANCY, AND PRE-, PERI-, AND POST MENOPAUSE. USING HORMONE-BASED BIRTH CONTROL AND EVEN MENSTRUATION, WHICH INVOLVES HORMONAL SHIFTS, HAS BEEN CONNECTED TO GUM DISEASE.

Symptoms of gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, include irritation, redness, and swollen gums around the base of the teeth. Left untreated or undertreated, gingivitis may progress to a more advanced stage of gum disease called periodontitis, signified by an infection that can spread to underlying tissues, the jawbone, and systemically to different bodily organs. In addition to causing or worsening certain chronic diseases, periodontal disease can cause receding gums, tooth loss, and jawbone damage.

The development of periodontitis starts with plaque in most cases. Treatments include deep cleaning teeth below the gum line with a laser to remove plaque and topical antibiotics to help control the bacteria and

shrink periodontal pockets. Periodontal pockets are spaces or openings surrounding the teeth under the gum line filled with infection-causing bacteria.

Flap surgery may be required in severe cases. This involves a periodontist cutting the gums and lifting them back to remove plaque deposits in pockets around the teeth. When done, the gums are sutured closely around the teeth.

Periodontitis is typically a result of poor oral hygiene, yet sometimes, other culprits are involved. Changes in eating habits can lead to an increased risk of gum disease during pregnancy. An ill-fitting or damaged bridge can lead to bacteria build-up along the gumline. Either a bridge replacement or

getting dental implants to replace missing teeth provides a solution. A misaligned bite and crowded, crooked, difficult-toclean teeth can contribute to periodontal disease. Getting your teeth straightened with traditional braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign will not only create a beautiful smile but also help you avoid getting gum disease.

Fortunately, good oral health is usually achieved and maintained with proper oral hygiene — flossing, brushing, and using a rinse as directed by your dentist — and regular dental check-ups with professional cleaning. Don’t wait until you have a problem before seeing your dentist. Preventive, proactive care can boost your oral health and reduce your risk of gum disease.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Newborns can recognize their mother’s voice within hours of birth.

• Initially a baby’s vision is blurry, but they can recognize faces and high-contrast patterns.

• Babies have a keen sense of smell and taste preferences, often preferring sweet tastes.

LABOR & DELIVERY CARE

Ensuring Safe and Empowering Birth Experiences

LABOR AND DELIVERY CARE IS A CRITICAL ASPECT OF HEALTHCARE THAT FOCUSES ON ENSURING THE WELL-BEING OF EXPECTANT MOTHERS AND THEIR BABIES DURING CHILDBIRTH. THIS SPECIALIZED CARE ENCOMPASSES A WIDE RANGE OF SERVICES DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE MOTHER AND THE NEWBORN.

Labor and delivery care begins with prenatal care, which involves regular check-ups, screenings, and consultations with healthcare professionals. Prenatal care allows providers to monitor the mother’s health, identify potential risks or complications, and provide appropriate interventions. It plays a crucial role in promoting a healthy pregnancy, reducing the chances of difficulties during labor, and ensuring the overall well-being of the mother and the baby.

Having a team of healthcare professionals, including obstetricians and labor and delivery nurses, is an indispensable aspect of labor and delivery care. These knowledgeable and experienced experts play a vital role in providing expert support during childbirth. They possess the necessary training to carefully monitor the progress of labor,

manage any potential complications, and significantly reduce the associated risks of childbirth which leads to improved birth outcomes.

Effective pain management techniques are also an integral part of labor and delivery care. Labor can be accompanied by intense pain, and various options are available to help manage it. Non-pharmacological methods such as breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and massage can provide relief. Pharmacological options, including epidurals and other pain medications, are also available when needed. The goal is to ensure that the mother is comfortable and able to cope with the pain during labor, promoting a positive birth experience. Emotional support is crucial during labor and delivery. Continuous support from partners, family members, or trained

professionals can significantly impact the birthing experience. Emotional support helps reduce anxiety and fear, provides reassurance, and empowers the mother.

After childbirth, postnatal care and support are paramount in recovery and adjustment to motherhood. This involves monitoring physical and emotional wellbeing, providing guidance on breastfeeding and newborn care, and addressing any concerns or challenges that may arise. This comprehensive care ensures that the mother receives the necessary support during the postpartum period.

Labor and delivery care is essential to ensuring positive birth outcomes, empowering mothers, and promoting the overall health and well-being of women and their newborn babies during this transformative experience.

THROUGH THEIR EYES

REDISCOVERING DISNEY’S MAGIC AS AN ADULT

I remember being five years old, clutching my autograph book and gliding as if I was walking on air around Disney’s grounds, feeling like I had just stepped straight into a storybook and became a part of its magic.

Then, again, around age ten, I can still recall that unmistakable pixie-dust feeling as I gazed upon Cinderella Castle at dusk while the park’s timeless melodies danced through my ears. It’s no surprise that my younger self fell head over heels in love with Walt Disney World Resort and dreamed of one day taking my children to the place I truly believed was “The Most Magical Place On Earth.”

Fast forward a decade and a half, and there I was — living out that dream. I returned to Walt Disney World, this time as a mother, with my three-year-old daughter and six-month-old son. The parks were still as magical as I remembered, but now, the experience has become even more meaningful than before. There were many special moments shared between my kids and me on that trip — but one stood out the most and felt like a magical full-circle moment.

We were standing behind rows of families gathered in front of Cinderella Castle for one last sparkle of hurrah. As the Happily Ever After fireworks lit up the night sky, I turned to see my daughter’s face completely illuminated — eyes wide with wonder, pure awe written across her face.

That was it. The moment. The click.

The magic was real again — not just for her, but for me, too. That night marked the beginning of a new kind of Disney love — one rooted not just in my childhood experience but in watching the tiny humans I love most become enchanted by the very wonder that once captivated me. And in the most innocent, wide-eyed way, I get to relive it all. I get to experience Disney again — but this time, through their eyes.

Because in the end, Disney’s true magic isn’t just in the castles or fireworks. It’s in the shared moments, the passing down of dreams, and the joy of seeing the world anew through the ones we cherish the most in our hearts. And that, to me, is the most enchanting story of all.

A NEW MEMORY MAKER

DISNEY STARLIGHT: DREAM THE NIGHT AWAY

Main Street U.S.A. will shine brighter than ever when the all-new nighttime parade, “Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away,” makes its debut on July 20, at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World Resort! Through the power of the Blue Fairy’s magic, guests will watch dreams and wishes come true throughout this star-kissed parade. As the lights dance from float to float, guests will see favorite classic and contemporary characters from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disney Pixar films — some for the very first time in a Disney Live Entertainment nighttime parade.

At the heart of the parade is a new original theme that blends a majestic musical score with classic melodies from beloved Disney animated films. Guests can look forward to seeing beloved Disney characters throughout the parade in shining, shimmering splendor, all culminating in the parade’s finale. A whimsical train, inspired by the iconic Main Street Electrical Parade float, emerges to take dreamers of all ages on a ride through the stars.

Swirling ribbons of starlight reveal Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck, and Daisy Duck leading a procession of Disney moments that includes Snow White and Dopey in a twinkling minecar, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider floating toward a gleaming lantern on their boat, and Aladdin and Jasmine taking a magic carpet ride.

Closing out the celebration are the original dreamers, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, draped in sparkling new looks. Together, the duo sends us off, reminding us to believe in the power of wishing upon a star.

STAY STRONG

HOW TO COMBAT AGE-RELATED MUSCLE LOSS

Beginning in their 30s, most people lose 3 to 5% of their muscle each decade. By the time they hit 80, between 11 and 50% of the population will have sarcopenia. This gradual loss of muscle and strength can lead to an increased risk of falls and fractures. Age-related muscle loss can also negatively impact quality of life due to mobility issues. This means everyday activities, like getting dressed or strolling through your neighborhood, can become increasingly challenging.

There’s good news, though. Age-related muscle loss isn’t inevitable. With a few smart habits, you can rebuild your strength and stay active for years to come. Here’s how to keep your muscles happy and humming:

Incorporate more strength training. Whether you reach for resistance bands, lift weights, or do bodyweight exercises like pushups and lunges, strength training is like a multivitamin for your muscles. It nourishes your body and keeps it working at its best. If you’re not sure where to start, check out YouTube channels that focus on strength training for older adults.

Consume more protein. Muscles are made of protein, and as you get older, you need more of it to maintain muscle mass. Try to get 20 to 30 grams per meal. This looks like a palm-sized portion of fish, chicken, tofu, or beans. Don’t skip breakfast, either. Kickstart your day with a protein smoothie, eggs, or Greek yogurt.

Move more. You may have heard the saying, “Motion is lotion.” Regular movement keeps your muscles strong and your joints happy. Formal workouts

are great, but everyday movement is also important. Do a few laps around your house while you’re on a call, do some calf raises while you brush your teeth, or squeeze in a walk while your kids or grandkids are at practice.

Focus on flexibility. As muscles tighten and shorten over time, your range of motion might shrink. This can make everyday movements, like getting in and out of your car or even turning your head to check for traffic, more difficult. Keeping your body flexible helps these daily tasks stay easy. Practices like yoga, tai chi, and Pilates can do wonders at improving your flexibility and strength.

Remember to rest. Muscles grow while you rest, not while you exercise. Take rest days and aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep. A glass of water and a good book can be just as nourishing for your body as a set of squats.

THE POWER IS IN YOUR HANDS

Don’t let age-related muscle loss sideline you. By starting small and staying consistent, you can build strength gradually and feel capable and confident in every decade to come.

Muscle Loss: What’s Nor mal, What’s Not

It’s normal to feel a little creakier with each birthday, but how do you know what’s part of aging and what needs more attention? Here’s a quick rundown of some normal age-related changes:

• You feel a little tight in the morning but loosen up once you get moving

• You’ve lost some muscle tone, especially if you’ve been working out less often

• You’ve noticed a decrease in energy or endurance, but you can still complete daily tasks

And here’s when you may want to check in with your doctor:

• You struggle to open jars or carry items you used to lift easily

• You feel wobbly without reason or shuffle your feet when walking

• You’re beginning to lose weight without trying

You know your body best, so if you have a feeling that something is off, don’t hesitate to talk with your doctor. A little extra attention now can help you feel your best for the long haul.

IT’S JUST HEART SURGERY. NO BIG DEAL.

That is, when you have the right team. Dr. Darien Bradford is now performing advanced cardiothoracic procedures at Texas Health Huguley Hospital, backed by a team of experts and the latest surgical technology. The Future of Beauty

HOW AI IS TRANSFORMING COSMETIC SERVICES

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a game-changer in cosmetic services. From ultra-personalized treatment plans to enhanced surgical planning and improved patient outcomes, AI is helping providers offer greater precision, personalization, and patient satisfaction by combining technology with human expertise.

TAILORED CONSULTATIONS, PERSONALIZED TREATMENT PLANS

One of the most exciting applications of AI in med spas is highly individualized treatment recommendations. AI algorithms analyze vast amounts of data, including skin type, age, facial structure, and medical history, to suggest customized procedures.

For instance, AI-driven dermatology tools can assess skin conditions in real-time, identifying concerns like hyperpigmentation or fine lines with remarkable accuracy. AI-enhanced platforms can also identify and analyze subsurface skin issues, guiding aestheticians to design precise skincare regimens.

These tools empower practitioners to recommend targeted treatments — whether laser therapy, microneedling, or injectables — helping ensure their clients achieve optimal results.

VIRTUAL TRY-ONS

Would you like to see what your results may look like before undergoing plastic surgery?

Advanced imaging systems use AI to create hyper-realistic simulations of potential

outcomes. Patients considering procedures like rhinoplasty or breast augmentation can visualize their results before going under the knife. This helps set realistic expectations and fosters open communication between surgeons and patients.

And surgical services aren’t the only ones that benefit from AI. AI-driven imaging software can use augmented reality to simulate Botox or lip filler outcomes, helping clients make informed decisions before treatment.

SURGEON’S HELPER

AI tools can assist surgeons in mapping out precise incision points and predicting postoperative recovery, minimizing risks, and improving outcomes. Additionally, intraoperative AI tools offer live guidance during complex surgeries, making realtime procedure assistance possible. This may result in improved precision and reduced risks.

STREAMLINING OFFICE EFFICIENCY

AI is streamlining operations in med spas and surgical practices. Virtual assistants may be used to handle appointment scheduling, answer basic client inquiries,

and provide post-treatment care instructions. This automation allows staff to focus on delivering exceptional in-person experiences. Additionally, AI-powered inventory management systems predict demand for products like dermal fillers or skincare serums, reducing waste and ensuring clinics are well-stocked.

SAFETY BOOST

Safety is another area where AI shines. Machine learning models can flag potential complications by analyzing patient data and cross-referencing them with global medical databases. For example, AI tools can alert practitioners to contraindications for certain injectables or detect early signs of adverse reactions post-procedure.

SMART MARKETING INSIGHTS

Beyond the clinic and the operating room, AI is used to identify beauty trends through social media analysis. By scanning platforms like Instagram or TikTok, AI identifies emerging aesthetic preferences, helping med spas and plastic surgeons stay ahead of the curve. Whether it’s the rise of “lip flips” or the demand for noninvasive body contouring, AI helps providers align their offerings with emerging client desires.

IDEAS FOR CREATING INVITING PORCHES AND PATIOS

START WITH A SOLID FOUNDATION

When it comes to durability, composite decking, like Trex®, offers an optimal choice for enhancing the luxury and longevity of a porch. Unlike traditional wood, composite decking resists rotting, splintering, and fading, ensuring that your outdoor space remains beautiful and functional for years to come. It also never needs to be sanded, stained or sealed, so homeowners can spend less time on maintenance and more time enjoying their outdoor space.

RUSTIC RETREAT

Create a space that blends seamlessly with nature by combining vintage-inspired furniture with brown accents to establish a warm, inviting atmosphere. Fill the space with potted plants and hanging planters to bring in a touch of greenery, adding life and vibrancy to the design.

SOUTHERN CHARM

Embrace the laid-back charm of the South by designing a screened-in porch that exudes comfort and hospitality. Add pops of color with brightly colored cushions and throws combined with lush potted plants and hanging ferns. Incorporate a ceiling fan to enhance airflow and ensure that your sunny Southern-style porch remains a cool retreat.

MATCH GAME

A welcoming front porch starts with symmetry. Matching wreaths and planters create a polished, inviting look. Add a rug to soften the space and define the entryway for a charming curb appeal boost.

TIME TO TALK

To transform a front porch into an area that invites relaxation and conversation, start with comfortable rocking chairs or a swing to encourage luxurious leisure. Add soft throw blankets for warmth on cooler evenings, making the space feel inviting and cozy. Incorporate a small side table to hold drinks or snacks, creating a functional area for gatherings with family and friends.

BEACH ESCAPE

Bring coastal vibes to your home with a nautical-themed porch. Decorate with light, breezy fabrics, and accessories, such as seashells, anchors, and navy stripes. This design is perfect for creating a relaxing seaside ambiance, ideal for anyone who loves the beach.

LIGHT THE NIGHT

Illuminate your front porch with outdoor lighting. The right lighting can take any outdoor space from invisible to inviting and can significantly extend the time you can spend enjoying your outdoor living space. In addition to adding ambiance, installing energy-efficient LED lighting into porch floorboards, railings, and stairs also enhances safety and security.

PADDLING THE BRAZOS RIVER

The Brazos River, Texas’s longest waterway at 840 miles, carves a path from the High Plains to the Gulf, offering paddlers a blend of serene waters, rugged beauty, and rich history.

Canoeing or kayaking the Brazos is more than a weekend getaway — it’s a plunge into the Lonestar State’s wild heart. One of the best times to go is in the fall (October–November) to avoid the summer heat and for foliage and spotting eagles. So, check out our tips below, then plan to grab a paddle, hit the water, and let the Brazos weave its magic. Visit Brazos.org for general information.

BEGINNER-FRIENDLY CANOE TRIP

The 19-mile stretch from Highway 16 to Highway 4, navigable in a two-day, one-night trip, is considered the uppermiddle Brazos’ sweet spot for beginners. The river’s forgiving nature, with gentle currents, a wide channel, minimal obstacles, and no rapids tougher than Class I, suits novices. Paddlers enjoy sandy banks for easy breaks, shallow waters for wading, and prime wildlife spotting. Expect six to eight hours of paddling daily at a leisurely pace, leaving time for fishing (catfish abound) or wildlife spotting.

Paddlers can launch at the Highway 16 bridge below Possum Kingdom Lake. The journey ends at the FM 4 bridge (the Dark Valley Bridge), where a convenient takeout is available.

Outfitters provide canoes or kayaks, life jackets, and paddles, but bring a dry bag, water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. This stretch’s accessibility and calm flow make it ideal for families or first-timers, with shuttle services simplifying logistics.

PLANNING HACK:

CROSS-CHECK RIVER LEVELS

Nothing sours a paddling trip like dragging your canoe or kayak over shallow gravel bars. Autumn, particularly October and November, generally offers steady river flows and mild temperatures.

Outfitters typically report water levels but always check real-time water levels and flow conditions from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) gauges. For the Highway 16 to Highway 4 stretch, monitor the Palo Pinto gauge (WaterData.usgs.gov/ tx/nwis/inventory?site_no=08089000).

Visit Brazos.org/forms/downstreamnotification-signup to receive downstream notification of dam releases. Check weather forecasts, too.

BEST CAMPSITE FOR STARGAZING

The Brazos River sandbars are stargazing havens with low light pollution. Camp at the “Pecan Sandbar,” a wide, flat island about 10 miles downstream from Highway 16, just past Chick Bend, for an amazing celestial show on a clear night. Shaded by sprawling pecan trees, it offers soft sand for tents and unobstructed sky views. Download a free stargazing app like Stellarium, which depicts a realistic night sky with stars, planets, constellations, and other celestial objects for your geo-location.

BALD EAGLE PADDLING DESTINATION

The upper-middle Brazos is a hotspot for bald eagle sightings, especially in fall and winter when migratory populations swell. The Highway 16 to Highway 4 section boasts the most consistent sightings, particularly near Ioni Creek, 12 miles downstream. Here, towering cottonwoods and limestone cliffs provide ideal perching spots, and the creek’s confluence attracts fish, drawing eagles.

Bring binoculars and a waterproof camera for close-ups, and paddle quietly to avoid spooking them.

SCENIC STRETCH

Another reason we love the Highway 16 to Highway 4 route is that it’s often considered the Brazos’ most Insta-worthy paddle. Paddlers enjoy a 19-mile visual feast featuring limestone cliffs, vibrant fall foliage (October, November), and dramatic Palo Pinto Mountain backdrops. Two spots in particular stand out:

Chick Bend (8 miles in): A sweeping curve where 50-foot limestone bluffs frame the river, reflecting in calm waters. Sycamores and oaks are blaze red and gold in autumn, perfect for golden-hour shots. Paddle slowly for mirror-like reflections.

Ioni Creek Rapid (12 miles in): A gentle Class I rapid flanked by willows and cedar-covered hills, the creek’s emerald inflow contrasts with the Brazos’ reddish hue. Capture action shots from the gravel bar below as canoes and kayaks glide through.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR YOUR TRIP

Budget around $150 to $200 per person for a two-day trip (canoe/kayak rental, shuttle, food, and gas). Camping is presently free on public sandbars, and you don’t generally need a permit to do so, but Texas law requires that canoes and kayaks be registered and licensed.

Pack light. Take a tent, sleeping bag, lantern, water (1 gallon/day), dehydrated meals, sunscreen, and insect repellent (summer mosquitoes are fierce). Bring a fishing license if you intend to catch bass or catfish.

Wear life jackets, paddle in pairs, and carry a first-aid kit. Flash floods are rare but monitor forecasts. Cell service is spotty, so share your itinerary before you leave.

Side Trip:

Lake Limestone for Eagle

Watching and Fishin g

If your Brazos River canoe trip leaves time for a detour, Lake Limestone is a must-visit gem. This 12,486-acre reservoir, fed by the Navasota River, is a haven for bald eagle watching and fishing, making it a perfect half-day side trip.

In fall and winter (October through February), bald eagles flock to the lake’s wooded shores, drawn by abundant fish. Local outfitters report three to five eagle sightings per visit, especially near the dam or Sterling C. Robertson Park, where cypress trees offer prime perching. Bring binoculars for close-ups of these majestic birds diving for prey.

Anglers will love Lake Limestone’s largemouth bass, crappies, and channel catfish, with public boat ramps and piers at parks like Running Branch Marina. A Texas fishing license is required. The lake’s calm waters and scenic limestone bluffs add Instagram-worthy views. Pack a picnic, cast a line, or simply soak in the serenity.
