My family and I are o ffering a generous reward to whoever can reunite us with a long lost family heirloom, an Edwardian piano stool that had been in the family for o ver 100 years and came to us as a wedding present for my great-greatgrandfather. Abou t f ive years ago, that piano stool was lost by a remo val company when my grandparents mo ved house, which caused my father and grandparents a lo t o f grief as they all had a lo t o f fond memories o f it So, I'm sure you can imagine our surprise when pho tos o f it recently appeared on the website o f Pianoman, a piano shop in Arlesey! Unfor tunately, it had already been sold, all we kno w is it was bought by someone f rom "the Sto tfold area"

Many people will also recall Her Ro yal Highness visiting Hitchin To wn Centre as par t o f the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2012. The Queen was visibly mo ved by the throngs o f people lining the streets o f the to wn, hoping to catch a glimpse o f the Ro yal visitor. As the nation mourns the loss o f HM Queen Elizabeth we thought we would share just some o f the stories we have heard f rom local residents who have had the pleasure o f meeting her, together with and a small look at some o f the ways in which our communities have come together to pay their respects to our longest reigning monarch and to formally welcome in our new monarch, King Charles III

Back in 2006, the Queen and Prince Phillip visited our local area after arriving by train at Arlesey, the f irst engagement for Her Ro yal Highness and the Duke o f Edinburgh was a visit to Samuel Whitbread Community College at Clifton The Queen o ff icially opened the new building at the school while the Duke went on to visit Sto tfold Watermill to see the work that had gone into rebuilding the Mill after it was so badly devastated by f ire.

We have heard some lo vely antido tes f rom our readers on their o wn experiences o f meeting the Queen including Nikki Lane who recalled “I saw her was when I was at Junior school and we went to stand do wn a countr y lane as she dro ve past She waved and made us all ver y happy.” Patricia Clegg told us “I was lucky enough to meet the Queen three times, most recently in 2014 when she visited Chelmsford where I was living at the time ” “The o ther connection I have was that I was an o ff icer in the Armed Forces for nearly twenty years, having joined the Ro yal Navy in the early 1980s ” “When an o ff icer completes their training and probationar y period, they receive their commission. Mine is f ramed and hanging on the wall at home ”

Local residents were invited to hear The Proclamation o f Accession o f King Charles III which was read ou t by the Chairman o f Arlesey To wn Council, Cllr Steve Hamilton and To wn Mayor Steve Buck in Sto tfold on Sunday 11th September.

Dawn inside the Bake Off tent

Can you describe your emo tions when you walked into the tent on the f irst day, was it what you expected it to be? Delight, excitement, ner ves and ‘f ight or flight’ was def initely kicking in. The tent seemed smaller than I imagined it. I just kept thinking, “I’m Alice and I’ve fallen do wn a rabbit hole.. any minu te no w the Mad Hatter is going to turn up”!

If you had to make a cake o f yourself in your proudest moment – what would it be and why, and what kind o f cake would it be? Ooh this is a tough one My family f ill me with pride all the time If I need to talk abou t me personally then it has to be getting picked for Bake Off I just couldn’t believe that someone thought I was good enough to take par t The cake would be a rainbo w layered Genoise sponge cake, co vered in sugar flo wers with tiny models o f all my fello w bakers peeking ou t f rom between the petals

Watch Dawn and the o ther Bake Off contestants as they compete to be this year ’s winner on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.

As a baker what would you say are your strengths….and what are your weaknesses? My strengths are staying pretty calm under pressure (on the sur face anyway), I have a lo t o f kno wledge stashed away in that head o f mine Weaknesses, I’ve been inclined to play it safe with flavours sometimes

f ront ro w )

Did you ever dream that you would actually get into the Bake Off tent, and what was your reaction when you go t the call conf irming your place? I dreamt abou t it bu t did I really? No, no t in a million years! I just remember saying “Oh My Word!” Or possibly something less polite! I had goosebumps and was shaking like a leaf!

Is there any kind o f cake or biscuit that you really don’t like and what is your all time favourite? I really don’t like Battenberg cake at all Ano ther pet hate is cake f illed with lo ts o f English/American bu ttercream way too sweet! I lo ve a really good lemon drizzle cake By really good, I mean it has to be ver y ‘drizzly’! No thing beats it in my book

What’s the one kitchen u tensil that you can’t really be withou t? That’s a new thing a Mexican elbo w, something I disco vered in my Bake Off u tensil drawer!

It go t me thinking abou t the human propensity to wards imagining that the grass is always greener elsewhere or the neighbouring supermarket queue is mo ving quicker (sometimes it is!) or the best blackberries are just ou t o f reach (they sometimes are!) Bu t when it comes to the grass, it really is greenest wherever it gets what it needs to maintain said greenness! When conditions are conducive to life and gro wth, it will be and thus look alive and well! The recent rain induced return to colour reminds us ho w rapid reco ver y can be in the right conditions! Similarly, us humans look most alive when we proactively create and maintain the appropriate conditions for life and health.

Sometimes, the grass IS greener elsewhere

Mental Health Matters Loach

A few weeks ago our lawns were spor ting various shades o f beige where the sun had scorched away the vibrant green o f early summer Ho wever, whilst driving into Devon recently, my eye was caught by the green o f the f ields! I had forgo tten ho w beau tiful and alive green grass looks in contrast to our earlier colour drained o fferings

As we enter these shor ter, colder days o f Au tumn, it can take more commitment and discipline to get ou tside, remain active, eat healthily, drink enough water, get to bed at a time that allo ws enough sleep (we var y on ho w much we need ) and no t allo w fun or rest to centre solely around the TV! These are the basics o f self care required to maintain the physical body. And there is gro wing evidence that conf irms the link between physical health, especially stomach and gu t health, on mental and emo tional health, especially mood and concentration So, this transition between seasons can be a good time to remind ourselves to renew our commitment to proactively practice good basic self care

September is always something o f a blur in schools Suddenly the summer becomes a distant memor y For our new pupils (and parents) it is abou t becoming used to the new rou tines This can be a challenge and we tr y to remember that any change can be discombobulating, ho wever experience tells us that ver y quickly what was new becomes familiar and in time comfor table.

For a school it is also impor tant that life continues as usual Our school has gro wn o ver the last three years f rom ver y small beginnings to one with approaching 600 pupils We are ver y conscious o f our responsibilities to our pupils and this community and are already preparing for the schools upcoming events It is wor th remembering that so many events and oppor tunities have been cur tailed o ver the last few years due to COVID It no w feels as if we are f inally coming to the end o f this traumatic period in histor y and we are able to plan things “normally” Spor ting f ixtures have star ted, the choir is being formed, trips are booked, normal parents evenings can begin and our open evening on Thursday 3rd No vember is being prepared We look for ward to welcoming visitors to our school in so many ways

September was a signif icant month for so many reasons. Most pro foundly the passing o f our Queen during the f irst week o f term created a great deal o f sadness in the countr y. Withou t doubt our pupils, many o f whom had just joined the school were affected by this. It was, on reflection unsurprising that this should be the case given the media co verage and perhaps more impor tantly the fact that the Queen has been a constant in all our lives for so long. As a school we took the oppor tunity to sensitively and appropriately use this as a learning experience.

Well the drought f inally f inished and the countr yside is greening up Ho wever, despite the drought the weeds cer tainly didn’t stop gro wing as we learned to our dismay when a couple sent us a picture o f foo tpath 6 when they tried walking it during the summer This leads f rom the roundabou t at Ho wberr y Green to the Green Lagoon and beyond Unfor tunately, for the f irst time in many years, since ACORN was formed, we didn’t have anyone to go ou t and keep the paths trimmed, due to our ageing volunteer base For tunately, one o f our younger members came to the rescue and after a shor t training session on the safe use o f sharp hand tools Kelli was let loose under the eye o f Colin and did an impressive job

News from ACORN

The group eventually impro ved all the paths around the village and installed way markers. In 2003 the foo tpath along the river Hiz f rom Mill Lane (FP2A) also eventually came under special consideration due to the high use and river erosion problems. The group raised funds to have a special mix concrete and stone path with piles constructed by contractors. The narro w concrete bridge o ver the river and ditch was replaced with the timber bridge that is there to this day. It was decided to make this a disabled f riendly path with R ADAR key operated kissing gates installed at each end for wheelchair access To celebrate they held a par ty with marquee, brass band, toilets, food and folk band at the Glebe Meado ws, no t forgetting the scarecro w competition entries They made this a joint celebration by arranging the opening o f the new railway bridge on the A507 for the County Council Much o f the ACORN activities are all par tnership activities working with pro fessionals and o ther volunteer groups

FP6 was a signif icant path for the group as it was the f irst one that we tackled during the winter o f 1995 under the Parish Paths Par tnership scheme (P3), set up by the go vernment to identify and make walk able all the foo tpaths in the UK The path could only be accessed by climbing o ver a steel girder fence and follo wed the f ield edge to the ditch coming f rom Fair f ield which had to be jumped across The group set to, helped by a Rights o f Way o ff icer to cu t through the girders, for tunately her bro ther had cu tting gear, and installed a kissing gate A local contractor, assisted by members, then pu t in a bridge o ver the ditch and cu t a rou te through the boundar y trees, which had no w become a spinney A squeeze gate was installed where it joined the track to the Green and Blue Lagoons For those that can remember, it was a hard fought battle. Although only a shor t path the group celebrated the opening in 1996 by organising a sponsored walk just for children to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. A GOSH nurse, replete in uniform, who lived in Arlesey opened the It was nice that a contingent o f children, some with severe mobility issues who had been treated at the hospital, took par t and £1,000 was raised for their funds.

With all the foo tpaths no w accessible it seemed a good idea in 2004 to create some guides to local walks Many o f us already had favourite circuits we walked so the next thing was to pu t it all do wn in print “Take the path on the right o f the winter barley and follo w it up to the parked Landro ver and turn left” just wouldn’t do I bet there are a lo t o f newcomers looking for the Three Tunns and the road opposite when asking for directions f rom older locals for Cricketers Road Mind you a lo t o f the old timers probably don’t kno w where Little Field Close is With funds raised to meet the cost o f producing a pack o f 8 circular walks o f various lengths we could say ACORN had pu t Arlesey on the map, well the foo tpath map To fur ther promo te the paths and get people walking Katie & Brian Ju ffs, who recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding, star ted up a local branch o f the countr ywide Walking for Health programme, which is still running today under the leadership o f Beth & Peter Over f ield, no w the Wellbeing Walks With two o f the regular walkers meeting during sessions and eventually marr ying we can cer tainly say it is a great success

Such a lo t o f mixed emo tions as I write this, the day that Charles III was proclaimed King and only two days since we heard the news that Queen Elizabeth II had died By the time that you read this, a whole set o f o ther national events combining bo th mourning and celebration will already be a memor y It will have been an unsettling few weeks for many And, o f course, we were already unsettled by war, climate injustice, and cost o f living Bu t in these past two days, I was struck by the way His Majesty was affected by the warmth and lo ve that he felt f rom the cro wds he had met, o ffering condolences and encouragement and aff irmation He expressed his thanks and stated ho w that lo ve had enabled him to take up the role that was given him I was also mo ved by the ser vice o f prayer and reflection held at St Paul’s Cathedral, especially as they spoke abou t our late Queen’s faith in Christ and the strength that gave her for her lifetime o f ser vice These two, the lo ve o ffered by o thers and lo ve o ffered by God, par ticularly sho wn in Christ, are a bedrock in unsettling times They are guiding lights God help us to follo w those guides and kno w their strength to do our du ty and ser ve our communities in this new era Graham

MEETING WITH GTR AND RICHARD FULLER Headlines:

News from Arlesey Rail Users Group

We have been promised we should no w begin to see signif icant impro vement with driver shor tage and training complete early next year poor communication around cancellations and delays is being investigated. inf rastructure impro vements need to be made to o verhead lines and sleepers to minimise risks o f disruption. (Fun Fact: our section o f the track is the only bit left in the countr y with wooden sleepers) data on station skipping sho ws the Cambridge line is no t favoured o ver the Peterborough line in resolving issues.

there was a full ackno wledgement o f the poor ser vice And apology for it I formally proposed GTR add Arlesey as a stop to the fast Kings Cross to Peterborough peak ser vice ser vice permanently I have been assured this will no w be consulted on. I’ve no t go t a deadline for a response. Bu t it felt like it’s a serious consideration I will repor t back when I have an answer.

GTR representatives ackno wledged the poor ser vice we have been receiving, par ticularly o ver the summer. They apologised and, unprompted, also recognised that we have heard many o f their reasons before no t least back in 2018 They cited three reasons for delays/cancellations; Train or driver issues, inf rastructure problems, unpredictable issues such as trespass, theft and suicide attempts Train strikes were also mentioned The issue o f late/poor information on delays and cancellations was raised We also raised the pretty naff level o f information at St Pancras Network Rail (NR) ackno wledge that this summer they have ‘had a shocker ’ with July having the largest number o f major events in 5 years A major event is a problem that results in a delay o f o ver 1000 minu tes and while it is unprecedented, it is still unacceptable NR are working to replace o verhead lines which has caused problems They are also seeing an increase in thefts, or attempted thefts, linked to the cost o f living crisis and trespass incidents also during the holidays

Call 07788 203240 for more information.

Finally, all o f the stations represented are suppor ting the large gro wth in housing in our area and it was felt many didn’t o ffer anywhere near su ff icient amenities It was reiterated that if you face a delay at Arlesey there are no amenities whatsoever Cllr Hayley Whittaker ((Biggleswade) and Cllr Simon Ford (Sandy) have agreed to work with GTR and Central Bedfordshire Council to ensure S106 funding is secured f rom developers to pro vide this essential station inf rastructure where there is any new development, on their and our (Arlesey) behalf In addition, Secure Cycle storage is something we (Arlesey RUG) continue to work on directly with GTR Overall GTR execu tives were left under no illusions abou t the break do wn in trust between themselves and their users.

It was made vey clear that we didn’t want to be having this same conversation yet again in six or twelve months time.

TUESDAY October 11th

Anyone who has tried to use the trains o ver the summer, will kno w the ser vice has been appalling, unusable and generally a shambles While some o f the disruption has been genuinely ou t o f anyone's control (stolen cables, trespassers on the line, extreme heat and strikes) the ability to reco ver f rom this ser vice and pro vide enough drivers to run the adver tised timetable is or at least should be well within their control Given the terrible ser vice, along with Biggleswade and Sandy rail user groups, we held a meeting with Richard Fuller MP and the MD o f Go via Thameslink Railway on the 02/09

f rom The Need Project

I f irst came to Arlesey in 2008 after spending what seems most o f my life in non league Foo tball star ting in (I think) 1972 at Dunstable To wn my local club at the time I always worked behind the scenes selling programmes, working the gates and working on the pitch etc , those were great days for a young lad with Barr y Fr y as manager and players like George Best (briefly) and former England International Jeff Astle in the side From Dunstable it was do wn the road to Bar ton Ro vers and doing much the same things until I f illed the position as Foo tball secretar y in abou t 1999 when the incumbent secretar y left. I was approached by Gar y King who was Foo tball Director at Arlesey to be Foo tball secretar y at Arlesey as the previous one was mo ving away. I could see that Arlesey had a modern ground that looked great and were ambitious and this was pro ved. They had just mo ved to the Sou thern League and this was built on rapidly as they won the Central Division twice in the same year in 2010/11. As they say time mo ves on and as that team split up things gradually drifted in a do wnward direction leading to relegation again back to the central div o f the sou thern League and then eventually relegation again into the Sou th Midlands League. Arlesey constantly tr y to produce young players and we have a large you th section and this has recently produced players that have progressed through the reser ves to the 1st team which is positive and great news, bu t even this is tempered by the f inancial restraints and this season we have with great regret had to drop our reser ve team a few years ago because o f the costs v the f inancial return, and we no w ground share our pitch with Baldock To wn, bu t at least that keeps foo tball at Arlesey ever y week with them playing whilst the 1st team play away

This close season sees our ever hard working bu t ver y small and shrinking team o f volunteers working as hard as ever to prepare for the coming season We are unfor tunately again facing the drain o f volunteers to form the committee and we must always look to f ind our replacements to keep the club in the community for the next period o f time after we have gone, this is a constant challenge and we must get the next generation involved to keep clubs like this afloat We have installed a new management team With Nick Bro wn bringing a new dynamism for the star t o f this season and are tr ying to restructure the club, we have to tally refurbished the clubhouse and impro ved the look o f the f ront o f the building with a brand new sun patio and things are looking far more positive than last season We hope to strengthen the squad fur ther as we mo ve to ward the new season Foo tball is in the long term a helter skelter ride o f peaks and troughs, we have had highs and more recently lo ws and the challenge for the coming season is to star t climbing up the peaks again
