T

he picture below is a graphic we recently received from the American Gaming Association. It depicts the United States and a state by state rundown of the legal status of sports betting as of January 25, 2022.

“Live, Legal” (dark red) denotes states (30 and D.C.) where single-game sports betting is legally offered to consumers through retail and/or online sportsbooks. States (3 of them) classified as “Legal – Not Yet Operational” (pink) have authorized sports betting, but have yet to launch. “Active or Pre-Filed Legislation” (yellow) denotes jurisdictions where bills to legalize single-game sports betting have been pre-filed/introduced in the state legislature or where a voter referendum is scheduled (7 of them). That makes a potential total of 40 states with legalized sports betting. I’ll bet you didn’t know that! Regardless of how you feel about sports betting, the industry has clearly grown in the last two decades. And, as more tax revenue is generated through wagers on all sorts of sports, fantasy and real, I’ll bet almost all 50 states will have some version of legalized sports betting by the end of this decade. What legalized sports betting provides, in my opinion, is an eventual path to win real money via slot games on your phone far beyond the borders of Nevada. Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK

WHERE ARE ALL THE EMPLOYEES? Automation & Computerization Affects All Industries

Dear Arizona Gaming Guide, I can’t believe how quickly everything is becoming computerized. You don’t need to interact with people anymore! Post Office, grocery store, bank, … All we’re doing is interacting with kiosks and not humans anymore. It’s so sad. When I flew in from Canada at the beginning of the year, I saw machines cleaning the floors at the airports. I have been coming to the States every year but I haven’t been back here since before the pandemic. I’ve noticed some really big changes at [some AZ casinos] as well. More kiosks everywhere. I don’t have to go to the player’s club for anything anymore. I can convert my credits to free play at the kiosk. I can print my player’s card at the kiosk. I can even order food from a kiosk. However, one thing I can’t get from a kiosk is coins anymore when I cash my ticket. If I want to get coins, I have to take my ticket to a cashier’s cage. Well, at least then I get to interact with an actual human. I don’t want to be served a drink or be given a hand pay by a robot. I want to interact with human beings. I know that there are already automated table game dealers, so is this the future of casino entertainment too? Everything is automated? Margaret Massey—Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Unfortunately, yes. The latest technology which will continue to remove the amount of human interaction is smart cards. Some casinos in the United States have already begun to implement the systems. Smart cards allow players to download money from an account at the casino through your players club card onto a slot. Any jackpots or amounts you’d like to cash out can be transferred back through your players card into the account. No more cash, no more coins, no more counting, etc. From our recollection, smart cards being implemented in the casino industry were first discussed in the early 2000s. What is more disconcerting is the point you make about the lack of human contact, personalized service and experience, and how that social interaction is a valuable part of your entertainment experience at the casino. We couldn’t agree more. Having a casino employee who greets you when you walk through the door, or recognizes you on a personal level at some other point during your visit, makes you feel welcome and appreciated. A robot doesn't. However, all of us should be aware of the trend toward computerized and automated work here in the United States. Especially in the casino gaming industry. Think about it, the slot

06 Arizona Gaming Guide | March 2022 | azgamingguide.com

machines we play today are a direct result of computerized and automated work! Invented roughly 100 years ago, slot machines are a fantastic way for a casino to provide entertainment though gambling without the need for a lot of employees. And casino employees call in sick (COVID-19 anyone?), require training, are owed a salary and benefits, have to actually function in a team environment with other employees, require uniforms and, possibly, special equipment (computers, tablets, desks, tools, etc.). Slot machines don’t get sick. Sure, they malfunction from time to time, but one employee can usually restart a slot on their own and have the game up and running again in less than five minutes. That same employee can easily oversee the operation of several hundred slots at any given time. Do you see where I’m going with this? Anything that can be automated will be automated, especially in gaming. An Oxford University study calculated the probabilities of various occupations becoming automated in the future. Analyzing the results of the study, researchers at Commodity.com calculated the percentage of jobs in U.S. metropolitan areas that are at high risk of automation and ranked them accordingly. We’ll focus on their conclusions about the Phoenix metro area and Nevada. The analysis found that 41.8% of Phoenix metro area workers are at high risk (a 70% chance or more) of becoming automated. An additional 22.9% are at medium risk, while 35.4% are deemed low risk. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics combined with automation risk data from the University of Oxford study shows a correlation between risk of automation and annual median wages. The lower the wage, the higher the risk of automation. At the very bottom end of the scale are Gambling Dealers, who have a probability of automation of 96%, earning a median annual wage of less than $24,000. At the state level, Nevada has the highest share of workers at high risk of automation at 48.4%. Moving forward, you will be noticing more and more the absence of human interactions both outside and inside of a casino. It’s not something we agree with and we’re definitely not looking forward to, but it will happen. You can bet on it. Until next month, have fun and good luck! $ For more information, a detailed methodology and complete results, you can find the original report on Commodity.com’s website: Commodity.com/blog/risk-of-automation/.

WHEN IS THE PROGRESSIVE READY? The Numbers You Need To Know To Make A Smart Bet

M

ost beginning video poker players have little to no idea what the true value of a progressive is. In fact, most players probably don’t realize the difference between a game which includes a progressive and one that does not. What every video poker player, regardless of their ability and experience, must take into account is that a progressive will boost your long run payback percentage. Among all the different gaming options across the state, you should be well aware of the fact that one casino may offer a Jacks or Better pay table at 9/6 with no progressive and a short drive away another casino may offer the same pay table with a progressive! As 9/6 Jacks or Better has a long run payback of about 99.56% with the best strategy, players must be aware of opportunities to play a game which offers the opportunity for a higher payback. If the casino decides to place a 1% increment rate for the progressive, in the long run, this 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker game is now over 100%! This means you should only consider playing the progressive version as, over time, your payback percentage using the best possible strategy will be higher. Now we can dive into the nitty-gritty details of just how much of an impact a progressive can make on the long run payback percentage. Since it is easier for you, the reader, to note how high the progressive value has climbed for the Royal Flush, the information below is presented based on that number, rather than having to estimate any numbers based on observations and calculations. 5 Credit Max Bet 25¢ 9/6 Jacks or Better Long Run Best Strategy Payback Royal Flush is at least $1,000 99.56% Royal Flush is at least $1,200 99.95% Royal Flush is at least $1,350 100.25% Royal Flush is at least $1,500 100.55% (Note: If 9/6 is not an available pay table, the additional amount in the meter has an almost identical increase in the payback on lower value pay tables such as 8/5.) If you are diligent and wait for a progressive to climb to a particular value before you begin playing, you can always play at a higher payback percentage. Remember, the approximate payback percentage values are based on long run max bet play with the best possible strategy. Good luck and have fun playing video poker! $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

TABLE GAME SIGNALS Don’t Get Them Crossed

C

ommunicating at a table game may be simple, but only when specific. Dealers ask for clear hand signals. Not because they are deaf, but because the Eye in the Sky is. Hand signals also help the supervisors interpret what’s going on without standing next to your game. When you’ve got a pair of fives and want to double down, you might be surprised, or insulted, when the dealer asks, “One card?” or “One hand?” while pointing with a single finger. That hand signal tells the Sky and the supervisor that you are doubling down. If you point back with two fingers, you’ll be splitting those fives. Ambiguous Signals Unfortunately, there are times when a dealer will misinterpret a hand signal, such as when you were planning a play but got distracted talking to the cocktail waitress, and your hand moved by your cards. Tell the dealer immediately that you did or didn’t want that hit if it does happen. You don’t need to argue; just tell them what happened. And understand that a dealer may not ever “fix” the problem without getting a supervisor involved. When the supervisor arrives, don’t scream at them. Instead, let the dealer explain what happened. Then, the supervisor will ask you for your input. The good news is that money talks, but in reverse in this instance. If you have a small wager, the supervisor may take conciliatory action and either kill your hand or give you an option to take a card after the dealer finishes their hand. The supervisor can’t ever backup the cards (giving you the next card that hit the table). Neither can the Pit Boss nor the Shift Manager. Cards never get backed up. If your wager is large, or if the casino’s rules prohibit immediate table decisions, the supervisor will likely stop the game for a moment, call a boss, and call the Eye. Surveillance will decide

based on what they see on tape. Another thing that never happens in a casino is a player seeing that surveillance tape. Fortunately, Surveillance Officers are great at their jobs and what they interpret is very likely to be precisely what happened. If you still feel like things aren’t right, ask politely to talk to the Shift Manager. It probably won’t change things, but you’ll get answers from the boss. The casino doesn’t want to cheat you or take advantage, and rules are rules. Bets at Live Craps Games As many of you may have already learned from experience, bets on live craps games aren’t like those at other table games. There are areas of the game like the Pass Line, Come, and The Field that are self-service. You place your bet down in the designated area, and if it wins and gets paid, you pick it up, or it plays on the next roll. All other wagers need to be verbalized – and acknowledged by a dealer. And, as the stickperson will tell you, “Early bets are lucky bets, late bets are no bets.” That means get your bets in before the dice roll, or you don’t have action. If a bet loses, the stickman might ask, “Want back on your hardway eight?” If you don’t respond, the game goes on without you. $

TABLE GAMES By TJ Jorgensen

THE HOUSE EDGE How Multiple Decks Have An Effect, And It’s Not Good

M

ost players with any blackjack experience know that the more decks in a game the higher the house edge. Does anyone know why?

If you take the basic game of blackjack using the most common rules (Blackjack pays 3 to 2, No surrender, Dealer hits soft 17, Double any two cards, Double after split allowed, Split any pair including Aces up to three times, Player uses Basic Strategy), then the house edge is as follows: Decks

House Edge

1 2 4 6 8

0.014% 0.341% 0.499% 0.551% 0.577%

Note that the difference between one deck and 8 decks is 0.563%. That makes shopping around for a good game before playing worth your while!

you are more likely to catch a 10 because the deck is richer in 10s once you remove an Ace. And, if the player does get blackjack in a single deck game it is much more difficult for the dealer to have one also. Doubling down is more valuable in a single deck game as well. Why? Most of the time the player will be doubling on a 9-11. The total of 9-11 is made up of 2 smaller value cards. If two smaller cards are removed from a single deck it gives the next card a 32% chance of being a 10, which is always good when you are doubling down. If you remove two small cards from an 8 deck game the chances of the next card being a 10 are 30.92%. To help play the hands correctly, I have included basic strategy for single and 8 decks. The dealer’s up card is shown on the top of the chart. The player’s hand is shown on the left of the chart. Intersecting the two gives you the correct play. $ H=Hit (Red), S=Stand (Yellow), D=Double (Blue), P=Split (Green)

As fewer decks are used, the probability of busting goes up. The player doesn’t have to hit when dealt 12 against a dealer up card of 4 to 6, the dealer does. When dealt a 13 to 16, the player doesn’t have to hit against a dealer up card of 2 to 6. Busts happen 0.08% more in a single deck game than in an 8 deck game, most of the time after hitting a hard 12 to 16. Why? The hand had to consist of two cards and would contain two smaller than average value cards. The removal of small cards in hitting situations causes a surplus in high value cards. This effect is more significant in a single deck game. Playing this way is worth 0.563% more in a single deck game than an 8 deck game. Also, the probability for being dealt a blackjack is higher in a single deck game. If the player receives a 10 value card as their first card in a single deck game it makes the probability of getting an ace 4/51 or 7.843% In an 8 deck game the probability of getting an Ace to go along with your 10 is 32/451 or 7.711%. Simply put, the reason the probability of catching an Ace in the single deck game is higher is because after you remove a 10, the deck is richer in Aces. The same is true in a single deck game if your first card is an Ace

id you know Arizona's online and retail sportsbooks officially stretched their unprecedented start into a third month with nearly $470 million in wagers and more than $50 million in gross gaming revenue in November? By doing so, Arizona became the quickest to reach $1 billion in wagering after launch. Arizona online and retail sportsbooks attracted $466.7 million in wagers in November, down 4.0% from the $486.1 million in bets generated in October, according to official data released by the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG). A modest drop from October, which had five full weekends of NFL and college football games, follows national trends. Average betting volume remained high as the state's sportsbooks averaged $15.6 million in wagers per day in November, down slightly from $15.7 million in wagers per day in October.

Arizona's operators added to what was a record-shattering $723.7 million win for U.S. sportsbooks in November. Sportsbooks in the Grand Canyon state won $51.4 million in gross revenue, which was up from $37.5 million in October. After $18.4 million in promotional credits, the state taxed $31.9 million in gross event wagering receipts. That produced $3.2 million in privilege fees for the state. Arizona has now shattered nearly every U.S. revenue record for a state through its first three months, even if those records will be short-lived following New York's launch in January. Still, through three months, Arizona's sportsbooks have generated:

• $1.2

billion in wagering, making Arizona the quickest to $1 billion in U.S. history.

• $121.2 million in gross revenue, easily the most of any state

over its first three months.

• $4.2 million in privilege fees for the state. $459.3 million in wagers, or 98.4% of the state's handle, came through online sportsbooks in November. Retail sportsbooks accounted for the remaining $7.4 million in wagers.

• Keep

it Social – All gambling, including sports betting, is a form of entertainment. It is not a way to make money. By playing with friends and family, you keep it fun and responsible.

• Know the Odds – What’s a parlay? Over/Under? Moneyline? These are all key terms you should know before placing a sports bet. Before wagering any money, make sure you are informed and know the basics of sports betting.

• Use Legal Sportsbooks – Whether you are placing a wager on

Plan on placing a wager during the college basketball tournament? Make sure to bet legally and responsibly. “Whether you are participating in a sports pool or placing a bet with a legal sportsbook operator in the state, make sure to keep the game fun and legal” said Ted Vogt, Director, ADG.

your phone or at a physical sportsbook, make sure you are using a legal operator in the state. Legal operators provide important player protections that are not found in the illegal market. The alphabetical list of legal operators in Arizona are: Barstool Sports, Betfred, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, FFPC, Fubo Gaming, Golden Nugget, Hard Rock Digital, Rush Street Interactive, SaharaBets, Superbook, TwinSpires, Underdog Sports, Unibet, WynnBet, and Yahoo. $

Here’s how to keep your pool legal:

• Gambling cannot be conducted as business, which means that hosts cannot receive financial benefit, unless they are participating in the game,

• Hosts pay out all pool money to the winner(s), • Only participants can win, and • Players compete on equal terms with each other. Lookout for the following that indicate illegal gambling:

• Paying a fee to participate in the game, including “suggested” or “voluntary” donations.

• A host who keeps a percentage of the pool for administering the game.

• A required minimum purchase to participate (food or drink). • Unequal odds. • Underage participants (under 21 years of age). With sports betting now legal in the state, it is important to know how you can bet responsibly. As part of the American Gaming Association’s Have A Game Plan.® Bet Responsibly.™ campaign, here are some tips so you can have a game plan if you are going to place a wager:

• Set a Budget – While not everyone will have the same budget, it’s important to never play beyond your means. Make sure to set a limit – and stick to it – if you plan on wagering.

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

SUPERSTITIONS & RITUALS Professional Athletes Have Them, I Have Them, Do You?

M

y favorite colors to wear to the casino are green, black and red (in that order). They make me feel lucky. If I can, I gamble every Friday the 13th. And, I have a beautiful silver charm in the shape of a heart with matching earrings given to me by my husband that I wear for good luck. If you have your own superstitions and rituals associated with your casino visits, rest assured us gamblers aren’t the only ones. Some of our favorite athletes don’t feel lucky before a big competition unless they’ve performed certain rituals. Here are just a few of the many, many superstitions and rituals in sports. NBA’s Michael Jordan and Jason Terry Early in his career, Bulls great Michael Jordan wore his North Carolina college basketball shorts believing they brought him luck. In order to keep the shorts underneath hidden from view, he began to wear longer shorts. Who can argue with “Air” Jordan’s perception of luck? While playing at Arizona, The Celtics guard Jason Terry and his teammate made a habit of sleeping in their uniform shorts the night before a game. When he made it to the NBA, Terry adjusted his routine slightly and started wearing the shorts of his opponent the night before a game. Tennis’ Serena Williams and Bjorn Borg Serena Williams, the powerhouse tennis player, world record holder, mom and wife who is undoubtedly one of the greatest athletes of all time, is also very superstitious. Williams would bring her shower sandals to the court, tie her shoelaces in a certain way, bounce the ball five times before every first serve and twice before every second serve and wear the same socks during an entire tournament! And, she has been known to blame losses on not following her own rituals closely enough. Bjorn Borg prepared for Wimbledon every year by not shaving and wearing the same shirt every single year. His rituals have been copied by many other athletes and even by entire teams. Some believe he was an influence on the start of the playoff beard in hockey and other sports. However, I believe that the playoff beard isn’t even a superstition at all but rather an excuse for men to stop shaving for an extended period of time. That’s right, I’m on to you boys!

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | March 2022 | azgamingguide.com

MLB’s Wade Boggs and Turk Wendell Wade Boggs had to eat chicken before every game. That’s a lot of chicken dinners! Legend has it that during his rookie season, Boggs recognized some kind of correlation between his chicken meals with multiple hits. So, his wife learned dozens of different chicken recipes to serve him. Pitchers are a strange breed and Turk Wendell had no shortage of superstitions and quirky rituals. His most recognizable identifier was the necklace he wore, which was made from the teeth and various other body parts of animals he’d hunted. Wendell also had to chew four pieces of licorice while pitching, leap over the baseline, brush his teeth between innings, throw the resin bag down as hard as possible, and draw crosses in the dirt while up on the mound. NASCAR Most drivers and their racing teams have a strong aversion to the shells of peanuts and $50 bills, believing them both to be unlucky. An old superstition that dates back to the racing era before World War II, peanuts in the shell are almost never sold at or around a NASCAR event because peanut shells were always found in the smoldering remnants of a badly wrecked car. While the legend says that two $50 bills were found in the shirt pocket of champion racer Joe Weatherby after he was killed in a crash in 1964, no one knows if the tale is rooted in truth. Regardless, $50 bills are non grata in NASCAR. Do you have any superstitions or rituals before, during or after your casino visits? I’d love to hear about them! Write me at Sami@azgamingguide.com and let me know about your good luck charms. $

Quotes Attributed To Betty White, American Actress & Comedian (b. 1922, d. 2021) I just make it my business to get along with people so I can have fun. It’s that simple. I know unless I’m true to myself I couldn’t be happy. Too much emphasis is placed today on externals and too little on character. I just care what kind of a decent human being you are. Keep the other person’s well being in mind when you feel an attack of soul-purging truth coming on. Kindness and consideration of somebody besides yourself keeps you feeling young. You don’t luck into integrity. You work at it.
