Tribes & Governor Agree To Compacts

VOLUME 13 • ISSUE 05 MANAGING DIRECTOR & VIDEO POKER GURU Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com

O

ver the course of the last several months, Arizona’s Native American Tribes and the Arizona Governor negotiated a new Tribal-State Gaming Compact. The previous compact was agreed upon in 2003 and updates were made in 2009. Appendices were added in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2015, and 2018. Clearly, the original document has been adjusted over the years. However, this new compact has several major changes in it. I’ll highlight some of them below and we’ll go into more detail in next month’s issue. Each Tribe now has to sign their own agreement with the Governor. By the time you read this, most of them will have done so.

• Live Craps, Roulette, Baccarat, Pai Gow and Sic Bo will be allowed in tribal casinos state-wide, soon.

• Sports / Event wagering is now allowed in tribal casinos and state-wide. • Fantasy Sports wagering is now allowed in tribal casinos and state-wide. • Some tribes with Phoenix Metro Area casinos will be paying in to a trust fund, overseen by the Arizona Department Of Gaming Director, who then disburses the funds to other tribes according to a need-based schedule. Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK

Q: I have been reading your magazine for years now and I love every issue. I learn so much every month. Thank you! My question is about the free play, comps and other benefits I get from [my favorite casino’s] players club. I can’t play the free play on any game I want. It has to have a sticker on it. I don’t get much free play from [that casino], I have played there for many years, I play there often, and with what I consider to be a pretty big bankroll. Plus, the comps and other benefits aren’t really that appealing to me. I like free play and I like gifts. A free hotel stay would be nice every now and then too. I just don’t get it. I’m beginning to wonder why I’m going to [that casino] and not somewhere else? Any advice you can give will be appreciated! Edwin James—Mesa, AZ—via letter A: Edwin, thank you very much for being such a loyal fan! Just know you are not alone in feeling this way. Since our humble beginnings thirteen volumes ago, we routinely get this question about the casinos.

As players ourselves we keep tabs on what’s going on at all the casinos across the state and beyond. Over the years, we’ve noticed some casinos have vastly different players clubs than others. Unfortunately, players can have a difficult time perceiving the differences, especially since many of us tend to get stuck in a routine and frequent the same casino more than we visit others. Our suggestion would be to try out several other casinos. But, to keep things as fair as possible during your evaluation period, we believe it is critical you take a good hard look at your bankroll. Come up with the monthly amount that you regularly spend at the casino you mentioned and divide that by the average number of trips you make to that casino every month. Completing this calculation provides you with a bankroll per casino trip you can use to gauge other casino players clubs with. Without it, you are sort of comparing apples and oranges.

Perhaps an analogy helps. If you have to get a quotes to replace your air conditioner and you end up with one estimate stating you need a 3.5 ton unit at 16 SEER, another stating you need a 4 ton unit at 14 SEER, and the final one claiming you need a 4.5 ton unit at 12 SEER, all with different prices, how can you make a decision? (Continued on page 8)

06 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2021 | azgamingguide.com

PLAYERS TALK

(Continued from page 6)

The right way to look at your issue is to imagine you have a certain amount of money to spend on replacing your refrigerator and now you are looking for the best deal, warranty, service, size, etc. You’ll have to treat the new casinos you go to in a similar way. Sign up for their players club and make sure to risk the same per trip amount at another casino as you would have at your current favorite casino. Do this for several casinos, just like you would shop around for a deal or get several quotes for home improvement projects. Then wait. Wait for the players club offers to come in. Once the new offers arrive, compare them to the offers your current favorite casino is giving you. How much free play did you get? Are there gifts? How often are they given away? What types of gifts are being given? Did you qualify for a free hotel stay? How much in food comps did you earn while playing and how much is being given to (in food) you on top of what you earned? I think you get the idea. You really have to be able to make a genuine comparison from one casino to the next. But, since there are so many variables that aren’t in your control when

08 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2021 | azgamingguide.com

comparing different players clubs, you have to control as much as you can in order to make your assessment fair. Bring the same bankroll, play the same games as you normally would, wager the same as you normally would, spend about the same amount of time gambling as you normally would, otherwise you’ll definitely be comparing apples and oranges! Fortunately the casino gaming industry has the concept of a players club embedded into it. Many other industries do not. Sure, your favorite car rental company offers free rentals once you “earn” enough points by spending money. But do they give you cash back? Gifts? Free food? How about the grocery store industry? When was the last time any store sent you a personalized piece of mail giving you cash money and a present just for walking through the door? If you are feeling “REJECTED” by a casino, especially after years and years of the same players club benefits that are not worthwhile in your opinion, you can “REJECT” them as well and find a new “favorite casino” that treats you the way you’d like to be treated. There are plenty of casinos around the state waiting to treat you right! Just look at page 38. Keep the questions coming! BEATING KING’S BOUNTY Betting On Your First Two Cards

K

ing’s Bounty (by Shuffle Master/Scientific Games) is a blackjack side wager that pays if your first two cards total 20. You get 4-to-1 for a simple unsuited 20. If you don’t make 20, your bet disappears like ice in the desert. Other Payoffs Include: Two King of Spades with dealer blackjack Two King of Spades without dealer blackjack Two suited Kings Two suited Queens, Jacks or Tens A suited total of 20 Two unsuited Kings

1000-to-1 100-to-1 30-to-1 20-to-1 9-to-1 6-to-1

Yup, it’s eerily similar to Lucky Ladies. And, it has a high house edge, as most bonus wagers do. But what if you could knock that percentage down or turn the tables on the casino and make the King’s Bounty wager when the odds were in your favor? It’s possible. But first, let’s talk about variance. The Variance Of Gaming Flipping a coin and choosing heads or tails carries very low variance because the choice is 50-50. Winning the lottery has exceedingly high variance because the big prize is a 292 million to 1 shot. If we bet “tails” on the flip of a coin, we’ll be correct within a few flips. Will we ever hit the lottery?

King’s Bounty 1000-to-1 is somewhere in between – about the odds of hitting a Royal Flush at video poker – once in about 50,000. Overall, you’ll get paid on something about once every ten tries. The variance is high. Since hitting the jackpot can be a long wait, you can protect your variance and bankroll by only betting the King’s Bounty when there’s a better chance of a winning combination. It’ll take some work, and you might want to keep your bet low to start, but you can have some fun while making a positive-return wager. You’ll only bet on the Bounty about 4% of the time with this system. And, you’ll have to keep a running count in your head as every card splashed across the layout. Don’t count the Aces, but cards 2 through 9 are plus 1. Ten-value cards are all counted as minus 2.

14 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2021 | azgamingguide.com

A layout with the following cards: 2-8-5-7-10-J-K-A would be 1+1+1+1-2-2-2+0, or minus 2. You’ll have to keep a continuous count of all cards seen. When you’ve played a deck worth of cards from a six-deck shoe (this does not work on a continuous shuffler!), divide your total running count by 5 (or the full decks left in the shoe). Then, any time your running total divided by the number of decks remaining is +9 or more; you make the Bounty wager.

An example would be a count of +40 with four decks left for a true count of +10. At that positive count, you’d make the wager. This system is the essence of card counting. It’s tough, and you can get asked to leave the blackjack tables for counting, but playing a few bucks at King’s Bounty or Lucky Ladies only at the most reasonable times will probably never get you noticed, much less barred. Most of your return on King’s Bounty will come from getting 20 on your first two cards, not the two King of spades against a dealer blackjack payoff. But play perfect basic strategy, and you’ll have a chance to catch the big one while playing even with the house. $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. BLACKJACK DISCIPLINE I Can Walk Away When I Am Up $50, Can You?

T

his month I would like to talk about your self-discipline, and how to walk out of the casino a winner. It's not how much you win at the casino, it's how much you leave the casino with! I hear players complain they were up $700 a certain day, but walked out $200 behind. An easy way to avoid this outcome is simple. If you start with $100, and you build that up to $200, put $150 in your pocket and play with the $50, if you like. If you lose the $50, leave with a $50 profit. If your luck holds out and you make another $50, put that it in your pocket as well, so now you have a $100 profit. Pretty simple stuff. You can continue to play with your $50 until you lose it or make it into another $100. The important thing is to discipline yourself not to go back into your pocket if you lose the $50 you are playing with. That is where most players will fail! The most important fact about the casino that players refuse to understand is blackjack is a negative expectation game, unless you are a card counter. It is not a question of if you will lose (yes, you will lose), just when. The longer you play, the more likely it is that the casino edge will kick in and you will reach the expected outcome, a loss. Don’t think, “If I play a little longer, I will win more money,” continuing to play will give the expected outcome the time needed to have the edge. Remember, there is a reason that there are no professional slot machine players, slot machines cannot be beaten in the long run. (Editor’s Note: Anyone claiming to be a professional slot player either can’t admit to, or hides the truth, or has a side job paying for the losses.) Worse yet, if you go to the casino with the attitude, “I am going to lose $100,” that's more than likely what will happen. We all know that there are times when you go to the casino never ahead at any point. That is a bad day. In that situation you need to recognize that early and come back another day. Don't get mad with your money! If you lose four hands in a row, switch tables, wait to the end of the shoe, or play later. There are many trips that you will be ahead at some time, only to walk out later with a loss. The point is, when you get ahead, discipline yourself to put a portion of your winnings in your pocket and do not reach back into it! I know what you are say-

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2021 | azgamingguide.com

ing, “Well, I don't want to walk out with only a $50 profit!” Many of my friends have said that only later to walk out down $250. My response is always the same, "Would you rather have walked $50 ahead or be in your current situation?" One of the keys to showing a profit month after month is to have the discipline to walk out a winner. Walking out only $50 ahead seven times is a total profit of $350. Although it may not seem like much at the time, it adds up. On the lighter side, I was leaving a casino and heard a man yelling at his wife, "What do you mean you lost $200?!?!?" She said, "Well you lost $400!!!" He snapped back and said, "Yeah, but I know how to gamble!!!" If you would like to be the one that has the winning edge over the casino, my new book, How To Become A Blackjack Jedi by TJ Jorgensen, is available on Amazon in both hard copy and eBook format. I teach how to overcome the house advantage. After all, it’s much more fun to win than it is to lose. Who knows, you might even improve your overall blackjack playing skills too! $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his tournament play and has beaten some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won the World Series Of Blackjack. His newest book “How To Become A Blackjack Jedi” is available online at Amazon.com.

VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann

BARGAIN SHOPPING Finding The Best Video Poker Deals

W

ho doesn’t love a great bargain? In fact, with the price of gas over $3 per gallon again, some people are willing to drive a few extra miles just to save a couple cents per gallon. I’m one of those people always on the lookout for a good deal, including gas. I buy almost everything on sale – clothing, shoes, accessories, music, books, appliances, electronics, and even food! Every week, I religiously read the grocery ads for all the deals. I don’t believe I should pay $1 for an avocado at one grocery store when I know the store across the street has the exact same avocados priced at three for $1. Since (for most) money is not an unlimited resource, people tend to take their time with purchases and shop around. So, why are those same people willing to sit down at the first available video poker machine, especially one that will not give them the best return on their investment? The answer to this question is simple. There are two types of people: those that are completely oblivious to the fact that different pay tables even exist or that the pay tables determine the payback percentage for the game and those that are aware but don’t believe that it really matters in the long run! Well, it matters in the short run and it really matters in the long run! The true beauty of video poker is what you see is what you get. You have to use this to your advantage. Don’t let the following misconception stand in your way of finding the video poker game that will give you the “best deal” for your money. MYTH: There’s really not much of a difference if I play video poker paying 9 for a full house or I play the same video poker game only paying 8 or 7 for a full house. FALSE! This is absolutely not true. Falling into this trap is like hitting yourself upside the head, twice! What you’ve decided to do is buy the most expensive gas out there, because you’re unwilling to spend the time to look for a better deal and the gas you’ve bought isn’t even going to give you better mileage. Take, for example, the video poker game Jacks or Better. A full pay 9/6 game that pays 9 for a full house and 6 for a flush at a one-coin bet has a 99.5% payback percentage. Short pay variants of the same game include: 8/5 with 97.5% payback, 7/5 with 96.4%, and 6/5 with 95.3% (yes, it actually goes this low and this is the pay table showing up in the casinos more and more, unfortunately). The full pay, 9/6 version of Jacks or Better, is obviously the better deal. Let’s see why:

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2021 | azgamingguide.com

Assume I play 600 hands (for approximately one hour of play time) of a Jacks or Better video poker game. Based on the probability of getting a full house, I can expect to see about 7 full houses across those 600 hands (on average). Also, based on the probability of getting a flush, I can expect to see about 7 flushes across those 600 hands (on average). Now, let’s assume I am playing the best possible Jacks or Better video poker game with a pay schedule of 9/6 in quarters at max bet ($1.25). Across those 600 hands the game should, theoretically, pay me about $131.25 in full houses and flushes. On the other hand, if I made the foolish decision to play a Jacks or Better video poker game with the worst possible pay schedule of 6/5 then I only would have been paid approximately $96.25 for the full houses and flushes that would have occurred across those 600 hands. The difference in my “winnings” between these two pay schedules is $35! In other words, choosing to play the worst pay schedule (6/5), rather than trying to find a machine with the best pay schedule (9/6), means I’ve “lost” $35 or I could have won $35 more—whichever way you want to look at it. Those $35 translate to 28 more hands of poker ($1.25 per hand) I obtain playing the full pay 9/6 Jacks or Better! Even the slightest reduction in the pay table will still produce grim results. Playing an 8/5 Jacks or Better video poker game will pay, theoretically, $113.75 in full houses and flushes across 600 hands at max bet. This is a loss of $17.50 compared to the 9/6 pay table and translates to 14 hands of video poker at max bet. This should not be taken lightly! You wouldn’t wake up one morning, turn to the financial section of the newspaper, close your eyes, and randomly point to a stock to invest your money in, right? So, why would you sit at the first available video poker machine without examining the pay table first? $

The true beauty of video poker is what you see is what you get. You have to use this to your advantage.

Aristocrat Gaming raises the bar on innovation again in a new family of games called Triple Grand Fortunes. In this collection, Aristocrat’s industry-leading Hold & Spin mechanic rises to new heights with true triple-up Hold & Spin action and a triple grand jackpot chase! Triple Grand Fortunes comes to the floor on the technologically advanced MarsX Portrait cabinet with three launch titles: Fu Grand, Lu Grand, and Shou Grand. Retired Firefighter Wins $500,000+ Jackpot Playing Ultimate Texas Hold’em At Gila River Hotels & Casinos—Lone Butte

Gilbert resident Stanley Beard beat the odds not once, but twice! First, beating cancer as a young adult, and now, several decades later, hitting a jackpot worth over a half million dollars.

Below: A table games dealer at Lone Butte (before COVID pandemic)

Beard hit the Ultimate Texas Hold’em Progressive Jackpot on Friday, March 19, 2021 at Gila River Hotels & Casinos – Lone Butte in Chandler. His “Royal Flush on the Flop” turned into a grand total of $538,183! The veteran and retired firefighter first beat the odds when he was 23 years old. He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and given only 6-8 months to live. Beard far surpassed his life expectancy and continued firefighting for 32 years, eventually becoming an Assistant Fire Chief. Luck was on his side again last week when he sat down at the Lone Butte table to play his favorite game, Ultimate Texas Hold’em. “Everyone at the table knew I won,” Beard said about his good fortune. “At first, I had a delayed reaction. Then, when I realized what I won, I was very excited.” Beard says he likes the challenge of Ultimate Texas Hold’em because it’s hard to predict the outcome. Since then, he has been playing cards for years both at the casino and at home with his grown grandkids. Beard was raised in Scottsdale before moving to Georgia, where he lived for many years. A big family man, Beard has since moved back to Gilbert to be close to his son, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandson. He lives with his wife of 20 years, Leanndra, who he lovingly calls his “girl next door,” because they were neighbors growing up. Although Beard is not sure yet what he wants to do with the winnings, he was thinking of hosting a big family celebration at a local resort for Easter. He also gave a generous tip to the casino dealer who dealt his lucky game.

32 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2021 | azgamingguide.com

“There’s an old theory that if I get a piece of the pie, you should get a piece of the pie, too,” he said. Giving back to others is something Beard takes seriously. For a few years, he was the Santa Claus at the Superstition Mall. In addition, during the holidays, he would take his casino winnings, buy toys, dress up as Santa Claus and donate the toys to foster children. “The magic you see in a child’s eyes,” Beard said, “there’s nothing that compares to that.” Gila River Hotels & Casinos operates three locations in Arizona, all owned by the Gila River Indian Community: Wild Horse Pass, Lone Butte, and Vee Quiva. The hotels at Wild Horse Pass and Vee Quiva are Four Diamond accredited. All three casinos offer a combination of slots, table games, poker and more, and are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. COVID PRECAUTIONS BY CASINO Readers Are Reporting Some Casinos Are Changing Their Policies

R

ecently we received many letters and emails from our fans regarding the status of COVID precautions being adjusted at several casinos. Since the middle of May, 2020, most casinos have required temperature checks, masks, and either prohibited or restricted smoking. Policies are now changing and are different between casinos. I’ll cut through the noise (and rumors) and put together a current list that covers the basic COVID guidelines by casino. The table below is from the later part of April, 2021, and as the COVID situation changes, so will individual casino policies as they are each operated by sovereign tribes. I advise our readers to verify with each casino (prior to arriving) by calling, or visiting their website, regarding their current COVID policies and hours of operation. $ CASINO
