Ed’s letter

Welcome to the one-off reboot issue of Girlfriend. It’s been a while since we’ve been in print, so we’re super-excited to bring you this touch-and-feel version of your fave mag. We’re even more excited to take you back to 2007 to revisit what was trending and what we were obsessing over when (most of us) were teens…

We stepped back into our crocs and UGG boots to rewind the hottest trends and fashion hits of ’07 and give them the today ‘slay’ treatment. We took a retro ride and checked out what the hottest babes of the day, our Model Search winners and the celebrities we gushed over are doing today. We also chatted with the cast of the new must-watch Prime Video series Class of ’07, all about high school reunions, catching up with old classmates and the importance of female friendships. Additionally, we brought the best pages of the mag back to life with a 2023 twist. From people-pleasing in the 2000s to the self-love ‘buzz’ in 2023, we updated our sex section with only ‘good vibes’ to bring you the Beginner’s Guide to Vibrators. Such an empowering and fun story to put together, from interviewing sexpert Chantelle Otten to photographing a huge range of vibrators (we learnt a lot in the process!). And don’t worry, we didn’t forget your other faves: do our quiz to find out what type of friend you are, and read our horoscopes for your love and life forecast. Enjoy!

Me in ’07 with side fringe (if you know, you know!)

P.S. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this issue. You’re an absolute dream team.

Love Nikki x

COUNTRY STAR

Taylor Swift is more than just a pop star, she’s a true advocate for women in the music industry, using her platform to speak out about important issues and encouraging young women to pursue their dreams in the industry. Throughout her career, she has been an advocate for women in the music field, raising awareness of widespread issues and encouraging young women to pursue careers in the world of music.

Using her voice

In 2014, Taylor wrote an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal in which she criticised the music industry for not treating women equally. She wrote, “New thoughts and conversations are happening, and they are important because they are leading to action.” She also called for more women to be included in music festivals, which was a major topic at the time.

To encourage other women to speak up about their own experiences of harassment and assault, in 2017 Taylor testified in court against a radio host who had groped her while they were having a photo taken. She won her case and used the opportunity to speak out about the importance of holding powerful men accountable for their actions. She’s also an active supporter of the Time’s Up movement, which aims to end sexual harassment and assault in the entertainment industry. She donated more than US$100,000 to the movement in 2018 and wore a Time’s Up pin to the Golden Globe Awards that year.

Taylor’s advocacy for women in the music industry is not limited to speaking out about issues. In 2012, Taylor donated US$4 million to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, and in

honour of Taylor’s contribution, the Taylor Swift Education Center was opened. The centre provides education and resources for young musicians, encouraging girls and women to pursue their dreams in the music industry. Thanks to Tay Tay, the centre provides that essential platform for young female musicians to learn, grow and succeed in their careers, which is a huge step towards gender equality.

Mentor in motion

Taylor always makes a point of featuring a diverse group of female artists as opening acts on her tours. She includes artists from different genres and backgrounds, and has provided a platform for many female artists to gain more exposure and recognition. She supports, mentors and promotes other female artists in the industry, inviting them to collaborate with her as well as perform at her concerts. She asked Charli XCX and Camila Cabello to open her Reputation Stadium Tour, and collaborated with Haim on the song No Body, No Crime

Leading lady

Throughout her career, Taylor has broken numerous records and reached many milestones, including becoming the only female artist to win the Grammy for Album of the Year three times, the only woman to have five albums sell more than one million copies within one week in the US (no male artist or group has matched her), and one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She defies stereotypes associated with female artists in the industry, as she writes her own songs and co-produces most of her music, and is known for being in control of her career.

From signing her first record deal when she was just 15 years old to her chart-topping domination today, we take a look at the rise of Tay Tay and how she has become one of the most successful female artists of all time, breaking records and defying stereotypes imposed on women in music…
girlfriendcoverstar PHOTOGRAPHY: TAS RIGHTS MANAGEMENT @girlfriendmag 13

Role model

Taylor has been vocal about the double standards that exist in the industry for men and women. In a 2020 interview with DJ Zane Lowe, she said, “I see it happening to female artists and it’s just not happening to male artists. They’re allowed to grow, they’re allowed to change, they’re allowed to experiment, they’re allowed to take a year off or two years off, and nobody questions it.”

Likewise, Taylor has been vocal about the fact that women in the music industry are often paid less than men. In 2019, she told Billboard magazine: “I’m starting to see people speaking up about it. I think that when you see something that’s not right, you have to say something. I think that certain things are going to be exposed. Certain things are going to be very apparent.”

Taylor is an advocate for body positivity, often sharing images and videos of herself without make-up, and encouraging her fans to do the same. Additionally, she’s been a strong supporter of the LGBTQI+ community, and has used her platform to both raise awareness and promote acceptance and equality.

Ultimate influencer

So we don’t just love Taylor for her music, but also because she’s always been a fearless advocate for women and marginalised communities. She uses her platform and influence to fight for equality and change. Her passion and example show that we can all use our influence for the greater good and make a difference. In short, she’s living proof that it is possible to be successful and respected in the music industry while remaining true to yourself.

Taylor’s influence extends far beyond her music – she’s a role model for all of us, and we can’t wait to see what she does next!

of singing to sold-out stadium crowds. Even crazier, Tay was country music singer Braid Paisley’s opening act and played for just a few minutes.

Back then, Taylor’s albums were pure country and the titles were just her name. Her self-titled debut album, released in 2006, was a hit in the country music world and spawned several successful singles, including Tim McGraw and Our Song, which remained in the peak position on the Hot Country Songs chart for six consecutive weeks.

She released Our Song on Myspace. Tay put her music up on Myspace way before it was the done thing, to help decide what was going to be on the record. Our Song premiered at her ninth-grade talent show and was nearly lost on the cutting room floor, only making it on to the record because of Myspace. By early 2008 Taylor had more than 650,000 Myspace fans, according to Billboard. Today she has over 245 million Instagram followers.

Taylor’s music videos used to feature guitars, boys and pickup trucks instead of snakes, zombie Taylors and celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Lena Dunham, Gigi Hadid, Hayley Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Hailee Steinfeld, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss who feature in today’s videos.

Speaking of competitions, this period marked the start of her blitzing awards nights. At the 2008 Country Music Awards she was nominated in three categories (Album of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and

New Female Vocalist). Two years later, she won Album of the Year and Best Country Album at the Grammys. Fast-forward to 2022, where she won six American Music Awards, bringing her total in those awards to 40. That extends her lead as the mostawarded artist in the show’s 50-year history.

On the 2007 fashion front, Taylor wore bright ball gowns and her signature curly hair was copied worldwide. Her style has evolved over the years, making her a fashion icon, and she’s stepped out of the box more recently with tailored suits (or perhaps Taylored suits) and menswear-inspired looks.

Taylor fangirled over meeting her idols, including Shania Twain and Mariah Carey, at the same time as her idols fangirled over her. In 2019, social media went crazy over Taylor dancing during Mariah’s Billboard Music Awards performance. Seeing the buzz over Taylor’s love for her, Mariah tweeted, “Love you back!! Thank you for your incredible energy.” That same year, Taylor was named one of the Time 100 Most Influential People, and in 2022 appeared on Forbes’ The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list. This was in addition to being named one of America’s Richest Self-Made Women.

Swifties and #squadgoals weren’t even a thing in 2007, and Taylor’s squad was just her mum and her hometown BFF Abigail Anderson. The two met in high school, and Taylor’s song Fifteen was inspired by Abigail. Also back then, Taylor would grab selfies with fans like most stars – but in 2014 she invited hundreds of fans into her parents’ house to eat cookies and listen to her new album, 1989, before it was released!

We heart you, Taylor.

A R EUNION TO R EMEMBER

Trapped at an endless high-school reunion with haters and an impending apocalyptic tidal wave? Say hello to the ultimate binge-worthy Prime Video series, Class of ’07 – it’ll have you LOL-ing, shedding tears and craving a BFF catch-up sesh. We got the exclusive goss as three fierce female cast members dished on their lives and all the series’ behind-the-scenes deets. So grab your girls and get ready for this epic new show…

Meet EMILY BROWNING who plays Zoe

Class of ’07?

Emily It was honestly amazing. I’ve never, ever played a role like this before. I’ve never done anything even close to comedy before. It felt really good to just kind of let myself be an idiot, really.

GF She is very confident, isn’t she?

Emily Yes, a little too confident I think!

GF Would you have been friends with Zoe at school?

Emily I think I would have been friends with Zoe, even thought she probably would have annoyed me.

GF Have you ever attended a high-school reunion?

Emily No, I was in LA with my best friend from high school. But if I was in Australia, I would have gone for sure. It would have been fun to see what everyone was up to.

GF Do you keep in touch with anyone from your school days?

Emily I do, yes. Most of my friends in Melbourne are people I’ve been friends with since high school.

GF Is there anything that you learned from playing Zoe and going back to that high school scenario?

Emily I definitely learned to be more comfortable with making a fool of myself, which I think comes with doing comedy. It made me feel a lot freer and a lot less self-conscious.

Were there any scenes that you liked shooting best?

Emily Yes. All of the group scenes were my favourite to shoot. That was just the best, most fun energy for me.

GF How do you cope with stress in your everyday life?

Emily I thrive in stressful situations. My brain clicks into gear and I actually feel like I know how to function better.

GF In real life, how would you react to the apocalyptic events in the series? Emily I think I’d have a brief 24-hour nervous breakdown and then I’d get to work. I’d like to think that I have a strong enough survival instinct that I’d only freak out for a day and then I’d be like, “Okay, well, time to keep us alive.”

GF Wow! How important are female friendships to you?

Emily Really, really important. I didn’t have that many female friends in high school because I was sort of afraid of getting hurt. It’s only in the last five to 10 years that I’ve realised how important my female friendships are. They’re even more intense than my romantic relationships.

Did you read Girlfriend magazine? Yes. From 10 to about 16 I read religiously. I was obsessed with it. I’m so excited to be in it.

22 @girlfriendmag

Meet MEGAN SMART who plays Amelia

character, Amelia?

Megan Yes, we’re both quite pragmatic, quite grounded and realistic, and also incredibly private people and tomboys.

GF Was she easy to portray or did you really have to push yourself?

Megan Not easy. It took me a little while to find her.

GF It looked like you guys were having a lot of fun on set!

Megan Totally. And it was quite meta, the whole thing, because we were shooting [while] out of school, and all girls obviously. And then being in this COVID bubble, we were only hanging out at each other’s houses outside of the shoot too, so it kind of felt like we were on school camp. And we became very close because of that.

GF Did you have any school friends that were like anyone in the cast in the series?

Megan No. I went to school in Brisbane, moved away to Perth to study acting at WAAPA, then moved to Sydney once I graduated. I have lots of uni friends, so it was all kind of new to me. I don’t stay in touch with anybody from high school.

GF So you haven’t attended a highschool reunion?

Megan No, not one.

Did you have any fave scenes?

Megan It was such a wacky and wild show, it’s kind of hard to pull out any moment. Just when you think you’ve done it all, you’re running around chasing real-life chickens, vomiting, pooping, doing stunts and playing dress-ups.

GF How do you cope with stressful situations in real life?

Megan I actually secretly love being under stress. I love the adrenaline and I feel like it helps you to do your best work.

GF How important are female friendships in your own life?

Megan I have two very good girlfriends in my life. I’d rather have a couple of besties who are really close to me, and who I can really count on, than a huge group of friends.

GF And finally, did you used to read Girlfriend?

Megan I loved Girlfriend. I had a subscription. The sealed section was my fave.

Meet CAITLIN STASEY who plays Saskia

How was it playing Saskia?

Caitlin It was so much fun playing a character who was as complicated and flawed as she is. It gave me the chance to explore and experiment with my most manipulative self. It was fun to play someone who is just being who she is.

GF Who would you have been friends with?

Caitlin Probably Zoe because she’s such a goofball. And I’m sure I would’ve wanted Saskia to like me.

GF Have you ever been to a highschool reunion?

Caitlin No. I’ve never been invited. I didn’t graduate high school, so I’m sure that’s got something to do with it. But yeah, if they’ve had one, I don’t know if I would have gone.

GF Do you stay in touch with anyone from high school?

Caitlin A couple of people here and there. Everyone’s got such different lives now.

GF What was your favourite scene in the series to shoot?

Caitlin All my scenes playing Saskia were fun!

GF Were there any memorable moments during filming?

Caitlin Just watching everyone’s work. I was so inspired by, and in awe of, how funny and hard-working the whole cast was. It was such a good experience.

GF Were there any life lessons you learned from playing your character?

Caitlin I’ve learned that compromise and compassion are essential to happiness, and you have to believe in yourself.

GF How do you cope with stress in your life?

Caitlin Not well. I freak out, although I’m getting a lot better. I used to be a lot more stressed out than I am now. I think gaining perspective and realising that all things are temporary, including your strongest feelings and your saddest moments, has helped.

GF How would you have personally reacted to the scenarios in the series?

Caitlin Kind of like Saskia, even though I’m a little bit less assured than she is. I would definitely cry a lot, that’s for sure, if I was stuck on an island with everyone I went to high school with.

GF And your female friends, how important are they to you?

Caitlin The older I get, the more I realise how important they are and how much they contribute to my happiness.

GF Did you read Girlfriend?

Caitlin Yes, I love Girlfriend. I liked ‘How Embarrassment’ because it was like, “Oh, these girls are like me.” I’m so excited. I can’t wait to see it!

VIBRATORS

Embrace

“Vibrators are a great intro sex toy to help you discover new sensations and reach ‘next level’ pleasure,” says Lovehoney sexologist Chantelle Otten. “First, get familiar with all the different types of vibrators, then ask yourself, ‘What do I know I like?’ If you need clitoral stimulation to reach an orgasm, look at vibrators that are either dedicated to this purpose or include a clitoral stimulator in their design.

“Secondly, ask yourself what the purpose of your vibrator is and what do you want to use it for? If you’re looking to explore new sensations, perhaps a finger vibrator or rabbit vibrator will uncover pleasure zones you haven’t previously explored.

“If you’re looking for something you can use in partnered play as much as you can solo, a wand or remote control vibrator will give you flexibility and versatility. My recommendation for a foolproof beginner’s vibrator would be a bullet vibrator. While they are very discreet and non-intimidating, they can pack a powerful punch to deliver spine-tingling sensations.

“When you start off using any vibrator, try it first on its lowest, slowest and least powerful setting. As you start to feel comfortable and get aroused, then you can begin to adjust the control and take it up to that next level. Allow yourself time to see what feels great for you.”

guide
the latest buzz in self-love with our first-time guide to vibrators. With so many options available, taking care of yourself ‘down there’ has never been easier. We chatted with Lovehoney sexologist Chantelle Otten to get her expert advice to help you find the grown-up toys that best suit your sweet spot.

WHICH VIBRATOR IS BEST FOR YOU?

THE CLASSIC Classic vibrators are a long, insertable design and can be used directly on the clitoris, but are primarily made for insertion. These are a good first choice as they often have different patterns, speeds and intensities which allow you to play around without being limited to external or internal play.

THE BULLET Bullet vibrators are a great first sex toy. They’re small, but deliver big sensations. They’re extremely versatile, so can be used on different erogenous zones such as the nipples, neck and inner thigh – and they’re super discreet.

THE CLITORAL A clitoral vibrator is designed to specifically target your clitoris, which has more than 8,000 nerve endings. Although they’re all designed to facilitate this, there are lots of different types of clitoral vibrators, from toys with stimulating ‘nubs’ to vibrators with a ‘cup’ that surrounds the clitoris.

THE FINGER A finger vibrator is a small bullet vibrator mounted in a textured sleeve attached to a ring. Simply slide the ring over your finger and get to work! They’re ideal for couples play, and can be worn by either you or your partner during penetrative sex or outercourse.

THE G-SPOT G-spot vibrators usually feature a slightly curved tip to ensure maximum stimulation. Some designs, known as rabbit vibrators, also include a clitoral stimulator to help achieve those coveted blended orgasms. If you want to discover more about your pleasure points, these are for you.

THE LOVE EGG These insertable toys are similar in size and shape to Kegels balls, but have a vibrating motor inside instead of weights. Some have a wired controller, others are remote-control operated, which can be a fun couples activity. Designed to nestle against the G-spot, they deliver direct pleasure.

THE WAND Wands boast some of the most powerful vibrations and are non-anatomical, so they can be used to stimulate a wide range of external erogenous zones regardless of gender – which also makes them a perfect couples toy.

THE REMOTE CONTROL These are exactly what they sound like, vibrators that are controlled using a separate device. They open up a whole new world for both solo and partnered play, and can be used hands-free, which means you can explore other areas at the same time.

THE PENIS This range includes sleeves, warming vibrations, stokers and pumps. They can be used as intimate additions to oral sex and foreplay with a partner, as well as being thrilling to enjoy during solo sessions. Some are hands-free, some vibrate and some suck to create different and realistic sensations for the penis.

The sweet spot

“The biggest tip for maximising pleasure is lube,” advises Chantelle. “The wetter, the better! If you’re looking for some next-level pleasure, try an orgasm balm. As you get more comfortable with using vibrators, you can experiment with some really exciting techniques such as ‘edging’. This is where you keep bringing yourself close to the edge of orgasm, but don’t quite push yourself over it, driving yourself to this incredible state of arousal. Fun, right?!”

Stay safe

There can be health risks associated with vibrators. Poor-quality plastics that contain Bisphenol A, PVC and phthalates can cause bad things such as infections. Make sure you purchase your sex toys from a credible retailer to ensure you’re getting the good stuff that will only lead to a good time.

I was in Paris for the first time when I saw director Francis Ford Coppola eating a meal with a giant group of people. After a long period

head over heels

As a huge Bon Jovi fan, I was superexcited when I got an invitation to a private performance. I wanted to get a photo standing in front of the stage while they were playing, so asked my girlfriend who came with me to take one. I stood by the stage and my girlfriend started to take the photo, then she got a weird look on her face. I turned around to see what she was looking at, and I headbutted Jon Bon Jovi. He had seen me and come over and knelt down to sing to me. How embarrassing. He continued to sing to me, and afterwards came to chat to me and gave us tickets to his next concert. Super-nice guy, but a super-embarrassing situation.

celeb LOL!

baring all

Last year I walked out topless in front of my son’s best friend, not realising he was at our house. (They arrive like ninjas. You never know who’s here.) I don’t know who was more embarrassed. Thankfully he handled it very graciously and is not in therapy… yet!

Toni

friend-zoned

It’s 2009 and I asked my crush to our Year 12 endof-year formal. Cut to the after-party, it’s a dream and I’m confident there are vibes. We finish dancing and he says “Gotta go, getting a ride with our mate and he’s leaving now.” I’m panicked ’cause he hasn’t made a move yet, so I decide to say, “Aren’t we gonna kiss…??” CRRIIINNGGEEE. To which he replied, “Sorry, I thought we were just friends.” I cry, and he awkwardly leaves and tells our friends. They all laugh and point. I’m shattered.

soccer mum

Try to picture going to a football game with your kids and being surrounded by 30 cameras – like 30 at least. I was walking across the field, trying to stroll to get into the car. I was trying to do it as fast as I could and I opened the back of the truck and literally all my groceries fell out. The eggs cracked… and I’m trying to rush ’cause everybody’s watching me and yelling. Not just that, but all the other parents are getting mad.

stepping in it

In a moment so absurd it’s hard to believe, I embarrassed myself so badly I thought I might forever be sucked into a black hole of cringe. While walking on a busy street in Edinburgh, watching a funny dog running with its owner, I slipped over in a pile of dog poo… into a pile of dog poo. I collected two piles of dog poo in one all-too-public fall.

I climbed into the garbage bin next to me to hide. By the time the bus pulled up the dingo was already gone, so all the kids and the driver thought I was just voluntarily waiting for the bus in the bin. I had to tip the bin over so I could crawl out. They all watched me, including the girl I had a closeted crush on. Yay, not!

2023 love and life guide

ARIES

Personality: Driven

Love match: Gemini, Sagittarius, Leo

Friend match: Aries, Libra, Aquarius

A flash of inventiveness in March will put you ahead of the pack and bring transformation next year. Follow your gut and ignore the conservative approach. From April to July family life will pick up pace, but to stay in equilibrium, plan your individual future too. Life gets glamorous from August with a new romance – don’t blow your budget and you’ll feel great about yourself and life. From October, smart work and diplomacy will pay off.

Personality: Sensual

Love match: Virgo, Capricorn, Pisces

Friend match: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

From March to June you’ll get a glimpse into your future and a new career; wait until things are watertight before making a move. From April lady luck will be your friend, and in June, when the ghosts of lovers past appear, enjoy the fantasy – but don’t make important decisions until October, when a new clarity and energy will unfold. December will put you centre stage of your social group, with beautiful alliances unfolding.

CANCER
