Class of ’07?

Emily It was honestly amazing. I’ve never, ever played a role like this before. I’ve never done anything even close to comedy before. It felt really good to just kind of let myself be an idiot, really.

GF She is very confident, isn’t she?

Emily Yes, a little too confident I think!

GF Would you have been friends with Zoe at school?

Emily I think I would have been friends with Zoe, even thought she probably would have annoyed me.

GF Have you ever attended a high-school reunion?

Emily No, I was in LA with my best friend from high school. But if I was in Australia, I would have gone for sure. It would have been fun to see what everyone was up to.

GF Do you keep in touch with anyone from your school days?

Emily I do, yes. Most of my friends in Melbourne are people I’ve been friends with since high school.

GF Is there anything that you learned from playing Zoe and going back to that high school scenario?

Emily I definitely learned to be more comfortable with making a fool of myself, which I think comes with doing comedy. It made me feel a lot freer and a lot less self-conscious.

Were there any scenes that you liked shooting best?

Emily Yes. All of the group scenes were my favourite to shoot. That was just the best, most fun energy for me.

GF How do you cope with stress in your everyday life?

Emily I thrive in stressful situations. My brain clicks into gear and I actually feel like I know how to function better.

GF In real life, how would you react to the apocalyptic events in the series? Emily I think I’d have a brief 24-hour nervous breakdown and then I’d get to work. I’d like to think that I have a strong enough survival instinct that I’d only freak out for a day and then I’d be like, “Okay, well, time to keep us alive.”

GF Wow! How important are female friendships to you?

Emily Really, really important. I didn’t have that many female friends in high school because I was sort of afraid of getting hurt. It’s only in the last five to 10 years that I’ve realised how important my female friendships are. They’re even more intense than my romantic relationships.

Did you read Girlfriend magazine? Yes. From 10 to about 16 I read religiously. I was obsessed with it. I’m so excited to be in it.

Meet MEGAN SMART who plays Amelia

character, Amelia?

Megan Yes, we’re both quite pragmatic, quite grounded and realistic, and also incredibly private people and tomboys.

GF Was she easy to portray or did you really have to push yourself?

Megan Not easy. It took me a little while to find her.

GF It looked like you guys were having a lot of fun on set!

Megan Totally. And it was quite meta, the whole thing, because we were shooting [while] out of school, and all girls obviously. And then being in this COVID bubble, we were only hanging out at each other’s houses outside of the shoot too, so it kind of felt like we were on school camp. And we became very close because of that.

GF Did you have any school friends that were like anyone in the cast in the series?

Megan No. I went to school in Brisbane, moved away to Perth to study acting at WAAPA, then moved to Sydney once I graduated. I have lots of uni friends, so it was all kind of new to me. I don’t stay in touch with anybody from high school.

GF So you haven’t attended a highschool reunion?

Megan No, not one.

Did you have any fave scenes?

Megan It was such a wacky and wild show, it’s kind of hard to pull out any moment. Just when you think you’ve done it all, you’re running around chasing real-life chickens, vomiting, pooping, doing stunts and playing dress-ups.

GF How do you cope with stressful situations in real life?

Megan I actually secretly love being under stress. I love the adrenaline and I feel like it helps you to do your best work.

GF How important are female friendships in your own life?

Megan I have two very good girlfriends in my life. I’d rather have a couple of besties who are really close to me, and who I can really count on, than a huge group of friends.

GF And finally, did you used to read Girlfriend?

Megan I loved Girlfriend. I had a subscription. The sealed section was my fave.

Meet CAITLIN STASEY who plays Saskia

How was it playing Saskia?

Caitlin It was so much fun playing a character who was as complicated and flawed as she is. It gave me the chance to explore and experiment with my most manipulative self. It was fun to play someone who is just being who she is.

GF Who would you have been friends with?

Caitlin Probably Zoe because she’s such a goofball. And I’m sure I would’ve wanted Saskia to like me.

GF Have you ever been to a highschool reunion?

Caitlin No. I’ve never been invited. I didn’t graduate high school, so I’m sure that’s got something to do with it. But yeah, if they’ve had one, I don’t know if I would have gone.

GF Do you stay in touch with anyone from high school?

Caitlin A couple of people here and there. Everyone’s got such different lives now.

GF What was your favourite scene in the series to shoot?

Caitlin All my scenes playing Saskia were fun!

GF Were there any memorable moments during filming?

Caitlin Just watching everyone’s work. I was so inspired by, and in awe of, how funny and hard-working the whole cast was. It was such a good experience.

GF Were there any life lessons you learned from playing your character?

Caitlin I’ve learned that compromise and compassion are essential to happiness, and you have to believe in yourself.

GF How do you cope with stress in your life?

Caitlin Not well. I freak out, although I’m getting a lot better. I used to be a lot more stressed out than I am now. I think gaining perspective and realising that all things are temporary, including your strongest feelings and your saddest moments, has helped.

GF How would you have personally reacted to the scenarios in the series?

Caitlin Kind of like Saskia, even though I’m a little bit less assured than she is. I would definitely cry a lot, that’s for sure, if I was stuck on an island with everyone I went to high school with.

GF And your female friends, how important are they to you?

Caitlin The older I get, the more I realise how important they are and how much they contribute to my happiness.

GF Did you read Girlfriend?

Caitlin Yes, I love Girlfriend. I liked ‘How Embarrassment’ because it was like, “Oh, these girls are like me.” I’m so excited. I can’t wait to see it!

Level up your frosty lip game from 2007 by saying goodbye to pastel hues and hello to deep, dark tones. And who could forget the iconic Avril Lavigne hair extensions we all loved back then?
