Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy No doubt you’ve heard a lot about Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy lately. What is it all about? How does it work? Who needs it? Is it something you could benefit from? Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, also known as BHRT, is exactly what it sounds like. Your declining hormones are replaced with hormones that are structurally identical to the hormones produced by your own body. Why is this important? Hormones that are not structurally identical to your own (for example, Premarin, which comes from horse urine) do not act the same on your body, may contain hormones that your body does not make and has no receptors for these hormones, so you waste energy by giving incomplete messages to cells which then fail to produce a balanced hormonal response. Also, your body cannot effectively metabolize these foreign hormones, which may have long term unknown, potentially, negative effects on your body.

MYTH: Our hormones levels are declining because we are growing older. FACT: We are growing older because your hormones are declining.

The goal in BHRT is to turn back the hormonal clock to around age 35, or around 20 years younger than your chronological age. Anti-aging medicine is a personalized, metabolic medicine. We now have the science to individually customize your care and we can look at the cause of the problems, instead of just treating symptoms. If you are basically healthy, we can look at how your body breaks down things to help you be healthier and stay healthy. All the patients in my practice have a totally different treatment regime, there are no protocols. It is a very personalized approach.

So is Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy right for you? Do you find yourself wondering……? Why am I so tired? Why am I gaining weight? Why do I have mood swings? Why do I have a low sex drive? Why am I not able to sleep well? Why am I having memory lapses? Why do I have frequent urination and/or incontinence? Why do I have migraine headaches?

If you answered yes to any of the questions, bio-identical hormone therapy may be just what would benefit you. How does the process work?

After obtaining lab testing of saliva, blood or urine, you meet for a consultation with Dr. Dayle A. Imperato, an American Anti-Aging Academy trained physician for evaluation of your unique bio-identical hormonal needs. You are prescribed the specific hormones that your body needs! We use a quality compounding pharmacy and carry a high pharmaceutical grade of supplements for your use. Your hormones are a symphony of interactions. All of your hormones are designed to work together and if one is altered, or deficient, it will affect the actions of all of the other hormones in your body. It is an interactive balance and as unique to an individual as a fingerprint. One size does not fit all. Treating even “mild” hormonal deficiencies can dramatically improve quality of life. Longevity medicine is aimed at the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age related decline. We are not prisoners of our genetic destiny. Chronic inflammation is the cause and the effect of most illnesses and the diseases of aging. Balanced hormone optimization and a balanced life style decreases chronic inflammation. Hormone optimization is the finishing touch of an antiaging lifestyle of good nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, anti-oxidants and nutraceuticals

Checking In

“There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.” Rachel Carson I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to warmer weather. Oh, how I love you Spring! Even if a couple of late season storms are thrown at us, I know that flowers and trees are coming to life. While the weather warms and the days grow longer, I’m going to be puttering around watching my beautiful flowers bloom. Let’s never take life and love for granted…but enjoy every day that God has given us.

With that being said, I know that you will enjoy this issue of Ardent! It is full of wonderful articles and recipes that you can delight in and share with your friends and loved ones. executive editor

Carole Morris What did we learn after reading this issue? The article by Rajiv Misquitta, MD, Kaiser Permanente, Food Is Medicine… Protecting Your Heart Can Start on Your Plate, has wonderful information about plantbased foods and how they are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular death and disability in the general population. This is the perfect time of the year to get your heart healthy! There is an interesting article on Stopping the Clock, all about the history of Daylight-Saving Time and how it impacts our lives. We have fun recipes in this issue…Bogle Vineyards has two recipes that will give your taste buds memories that will linger for a lifetime. Additionally, Justin Pinnell added his wonderful (and healthy) recipes for picked onions and toasted garlic. And it’s impossible to pass up Cindy Della Monica, Owner of Cheese Central’s recipes, they are always delightfully diverse. We totally have you covered!

food} Early medieval folklore believed onions were able to ward off disease and evil. We now know there was some truth to their superstitions because onions do have great health benefits—ranging from bone health to gut health. One of the best ways to get those antioxidants (and jazz up any recipe) is to serve up the delicious, pickled onion.

Pickled Onions Ingredients 1 large red onion (peeled and sliced*) 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar or (rice, red wine, white vinegars) 1/4 cup water 1 teaspoon fine sea salt 2 tablespoons white sugar or (maple syrup, honey, agave) * If you prefer the nice crunch of thicker onions, remember to let the onions rest longer in the brine for the great pickled taste. Instructions 1. In a pan (on your stovetop) combine the

vinegar, water, salt, sweetener and bring to a simmer.

2. In a jar, add sliced onions.

3. Pour the cooked ingredients over the onions and let rest for approximately 30 minutes. Enjoy!

PickledandOnions Roasted Garlic Recipe by Justin Pinnell

food}

Roasted Garlic February is national heart month, but what can you do in this hectic, modern fast-food world to help your heart? An excellent alternative is to munch on roasted garlic! Many believe it can bring down your blood pressure. Additionally, it may also help you get over that cold. I make this whole clove roasted garlic to use when cooking my favorite dishes. I also use it as a spread on crackers, or on toasted bread.

Instructions 1. Start with as many whole cloves of garlic as

you like. (I use enough to fill a jar kept in the refrigerator)

2. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

3. Put cloves in a shallow oven safe pan.

4. Fill the pan with olive oil till it just reaches the top of the cloves. 5. Sprinkle 1 tablespoons of salt evenly over the cloves.

6. Add any seasoning flare you desire such as thyme or rosemary to the pan to give that extra flavor. 7. Cook for 90 to 120 minutes till garlic is buttery when spread.

Deliciously heart healthy! Try one of my favorite uses of pickled onions and roasted garlic… a turkey sandwich on sourdough. Mince three cloves of your freshly roasted garlic and mix with enough mayonnaise to spread liberally on your sourdough bread. Stack thicksliced turkey, swiss, thinly sliced apple, arugula, and a healthy serving of pickled onions. Before capping the sandwich, lightly sprinkle with salt to really bring out those flavors!

Buttery Garlic Salmon By Carole

food} Salmon has been consumed by North American humans for at least 11,500 years. So really, it’s in our DNA to love it! Additionally, salmon is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. It’s rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and decrease risk factors for disease. Salmon also provides protein and is an excellent source of B vitamins. Let’s not forget Astaxanthin which is an antioxidant found in salmon that benefits the heart, brain, and nervous system. You are going to love this recipe, it takes salmon to a new level.

INGREDIENTS (Serves 4 of your favorite people) 4 salmon filets 2 tbsp salted butter 2 tbsp olive oil 1 medium shallot (sliced) 3 garlic cloves (minced) 1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes 1 C. heavy cream 2 ounces cream cheese (cubed)

1/2 cup parmesan cheese (grated) 4 C. baby spinach 2 tbsp. parsley (chopped) 1 lemon (juiced) 3 tbsp. chives chopped (2 tbsp. reserved for serving) black pepper and salt to taste

Instructions 1. Sprinkle salmon filets with salt and pepper.

2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Skin side down, add the salmon…cook for 3-5 minutes (until salmon is crisp). Gently turn salmon and continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes; remove salmon from skillet. 3. Using the same skillet, add the butter, garlic, and shallots, cook for about 3 minutes. Stir in the crushed red pepper flakes, cream cheese , and heavy cream. Season (to taste) with salt and pepper. Over medium heat, bring to a simmer , stirring constantly until smooth and creamy.

4. Stir in parmesan, and spinach… cook until the spinach is wilted, about 3-5 minutes. Stir in the lemon juice, parsley, and chives.

5. Remove skillet from heat, place salmon back into the sauce.

6. Place each piece of salmon on individual plates, spoon the sauce over top, and sprinkle with additional herbs.

Alpine Fondue and McConnell

Estates Vermentino By Natalie Hawkins, Tasting Room Manager at McConnell Estates

www.mcconnellestates.com

One of the best things about being in a wine-loving family is that there are bottles to open at every meal that we are able to share together. The easiest pairing for wines has always been cheese, but is anyone else getting a bit bored with plain charcuterie? Or the mantra of drinking red wines in the winter? Recently, I have been enjoying skiing in the Tahoe area and always want to take one of my favorite bottles of wine - the McConnell Estates Winery 2020 Vermentino- to enjoy post-skiing. This dry white wine is light, refreshing and very easy for those (like me) who are beginners at pairing. I constructed a fun recipe to make a more Californian version of alpine fondue at home or while glamping that gets the whole family involved!!

Californian Alpine Fondue paired with Vermentino wine Ingredients Mix of alpine gruyere, fontina and gouda to equal ~1lb (add a small amount of blue cheese if you are feeling adventurous) 3 tbsp. cornstarch 1 cup of McConnell Estates Vermentino ($22/bottle)

2 cloves of garlic Sprinkle of nutmeg Squeeze of fresh lemon juice Splash of Brandy

Directions 1. Start by pouring yourself a glass of chilled

whenever, but the later you add it, the more flavor is retained).

2. Simmer the wine, crushed garlic, nutmeg and lemon on medium heat, while slowly adding small handfuls of the cheeses. To achieve your desired consistency, you may add more Vermentino to increase the smoothness. (TIP! You can add the Brandy

4. Pair with your family, friends or a good ski trip with your dog.

2020 Vermentino, which is an absolute necessity. Then, grate all cheese together and roughly toss with cornstarch, which will avoid making the fondue all clumpy

NOTE: Our McConnell Estates Vermentino is available in our tasting room or e-store.

3. Create a basket of dipping items. Keep it traditional by using pumpernickel bread, red skinned potatoes or pear slices. Really mix it up by using grilled dates, lightly fried prosciutto, Chanterelle mushroom, endive, pickled asparagus, toasted crusty pretzel or rye bread and Pink Lady apple slices.

Cheese, Strange, and

Extraordinary By Cindy Della Monica, Cheesemonger

and Owner, Cheese Central

There is a saying we know as cheese mongers: “Cheese is Milk’s Leap to Immortality.” The saying is intended to glorify the cheesemaking process. But as you will read below, there are lots of other reasons to remember cheese! The Winter cold gives us the opportunity to snuggle in with a good book. (Really more satisfying than binge watching TV!) A favorite birthday gift last year was a hardcover copy of ATLAS OBSCURA. An interesting tome, described as the definitive guide of the world’s hidden wonders--filled with wonderfully unusual facts, travel destinations and stories. Short articles that don’t require you to invest too much time, yet engage completely, and allow you to put it down when the Spring’s warm sun comes out.

26. ardentforlife.net - winter 2022

food}

One entry caught my eye, “20 Most Extraordinary Cheeses in the World,” which lists some really…ummm, how can I say it… well, cheeses that you won’t find at your local grocery. I’m delighted to report that our cheese shop carries TWO of those listed -- Tete de Moine, and Cougar Gold. Tete de Moine, made of raw cow’s milk into very small wheels and aged over 60 days, requires a small specialized tool, called a girolle, (pictured on the left) to serve it properly. An online resource, www.emmiusa.com/ cheese/tete-de-moine-aop, will help you understand this delicious Swiss treasure. Several of our guests request the cheese each year as a Christmas treat.

Cougar Gold, however, is an indulgence and good gift all yearround! It is very excellent cheddar cheese, in a can, but not “canned cheese” like that hideous fake cheese from a spray can. A well-aged traditional cheddar, developed at Washington State University, Cougar Gold found its way into tins in the 1930’s via a research project funded by the US government and the American Can Company. As plastic was not yet invented, and wax coating on wheels might crack, the tins provided a new long-term storage option. An experiment with very long-term rewards!

A silly thought, really, but does Winter’s cold do something funny to human brains? It seems unusual food traditions and games were invented whilst supping around an ancient fire intended to combat the cold. Eating rotting cheese? Yup, Italians and British claim that one. Chasing cheese down a steep hill for grazing rights, or “lawn bowling” with wheels of cheese? Of course! Those two groups are at it again. How about playing with our food out of boredom? Could be how poutine was invented. Information on edible rotting cheese will definitely keep you on a strict diet, and once read…you can’t un-read it! So I won’t go there. But those crazy Italian and British brains did come up with a couple of other unusual cheesy traditions, cheese rolling and lawn bowling.

A rowdy group of contenders and observers gather on Cooper’s Hill, in Brockworth, Gloucester, on England’s Spring Bank Holiday near the end of May. They are there for the annual Cheese Rolling and Wake, a centuries old tradition for good harvest and for local grazing rights. Sounds gruesome at first, but “wake” is a local term for festival! The Cheese Rollers Pub provides a bit of liquid courage for some who will attempt to claim the Cheese Rolling prize. The “prize?” Well, the cheese, of course.

The cheese wheel itself is an eight-pound Double Gloucester, in a wooden cage tightly wrapped in bright ribbons. As the cheese is more compact than any contender, it gains momentum quickly after being tossed down the hill to be chased— almost becoming a missile! Beware bystanders, as the cheese doesn’t always follow the prescribed downhill course! After ritual sprinkling of confections and buns around the top of Cooper’s Hill to encourage a “fruitful harvest,” the Master of Ceremonies begins the race at noon with contenders sitting at the starting line. “One to be ready, two to be steady, three to prepare (at which point the cheese is released), and four to be off!” According to the British Engineering Mathematics Magazine, “there are no real rules nor any accepted technique; those mad enough to take part can be seen to variously run, bounce, bum-shuffle or tumble, often all four, often unintentionally.” The mathematics magazine describes this race because of their fascination with the trajectory that the cheese and/or the contestants take on the 70* downhill chase!

Cheese Central

There are separate races for the men and women, and an uphill event for the kiddies! Bottom of the hill “Catchers” are bulky rugby players, stationed to stop those contenders still standing from running headlong into the fence. Ambulances are on standby to attend the injured (up to 40 in a recent year). Check out the Netflix documentary “We Are the Champions,” which documents the cheese rolling race and Flo Early’s 4th win, most for female entrants.

PS: Cooper’s Hill cheese, a flavored double Gloucester, is always available in our shop, and is our #1 seller! Customers know it as “the twicebaked potato cheese,” as it is well flavored with onions and chives and will remind you of those potatoes, without the bacon, of course. As the British are tumbling down the hill after the cheese, the Italians are playing Cacio al Fuso. A game much like bocce or lawn boules, the townspeople of the Tuscan hilltop town Pienza use a cheese to roll towards a central wooden peg in the middle of the marble ring in the pavement. The marble ring is in the central plaza in the town—and has been used for five centuries. Happily, there are no injuries that occur during this very pedestrian cheese rolling game! When “playing with food” becomes our boredom-buster, some of my favorite recipes have been found tried and true after doubtful experimentation. I mentioned Poutine at the top of the article. Not to frown on that Canadian national dish, but it is an unusual combination stacking French fried potatoes with unaged cheese curds and a viscous brown gravy! I feel like someone made a midnight snacking trip to the fridge and combined whatever was leftovers to fill that deep night tummy hole. Culture: The Word on Cheese magazine had an article on strange cheeses as presented via CNN. “Strange” such as Lichen cheese, deer milk cheese, llama and alpaca, and donkey. Yet, in that line-up, #7 is American cheese! For a country that celebrates National Grilled Cheese Day, National Grilled Cheese Month, and more, bear in mind that most people still are making grilled cheese sandwiches with white bread and American cheese—which isn’t really cheese!

ardentforlife.net 27

food}

Cheese Central

Real cheese is a mixture of warmed milk, cultured with bacteria, coagulated with rennet, cut curds, formed and aged. American cheese-a cold weather brain blip? Maybe! American cheese is technically a smooth and creamy mixture of ingredients that include milk, whey, milkfat, salt, gelatin, milk powder, dyed orange, artificial flavors, and oil. No cultures, no coagulation, no aging. Slices are either loved, tolerated, or abhorred around the United States. I laugh at the family that I married into, because as New Yorkers they insist that the “white American” cheese that they get on the East Coast tastes better than what you can get on the West Coast! The only thing missing from their cheese choice? The orange dye!

Toma Cheese, Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company

Make life better with a great grilled cheese, getting out of the American cheese box. We will be happy to help you pick some great melters when you stop in the shop.

For Cheese Appreciation Day everyday Popular turn-of-the-last century sandwich, we have some terrific suggestions to upgrade this homey classic Use bread that has good flavor, and is thicker cut, more like Texas toast. Butter is the choice here for the spread on the outside of the bread. If you want to up the ante a bit, press grated Parmigiano cheese onto the surface.

A combination of cheeses makes the best gooey sandwich: pick a smooth melter, such as Havarti, Toma, or Tavoliere. We like about 50% of the total cheese to be your smooth melting choice. Add shredded medium-sharp cheddar, and shredded aged gouda. This combination will give you substantial mouth-feel, stringy goodness and great flavor. Up your game a bit by spreading a pepper jelly or honey on one inside of your bread. A few thin shavings of red onion will also be welcome. Smush it together, grill or pan-toast as usual, and see what a difference these ideas make! Happy Lunar New Year! Recipe by World Spice Merchants - www.worldspice.com Photography by Jamie Lynn Aragonez

30. ardentforlife.net - winter 2022

food}

Asian cultures worldwide celebrate the Lunar New Year with all manner of traditions, many of which involve food and lucky ingredients! Long noodles for happiness and longevity is one of many so we're sharing a souped up ramen recipe to ring in the Year of the Tiger! Soup is also traditional for the lunar new year and represents a wish for the new year to be better than the last- washing away the old year and making room for a fresh new beginning full of prosperity and hope.

Rooster Ramen with Black Garlic

We’ve come a long way from the dorm room hot plate and elevated a pack of instant ramen to new heights with our Ramen Seasoning Kit. It includes something to satisfy every flavor craving, and you can mix and match the flavors to make your own bowl just the way you like it. We pulled out all the stops, and all the garnishes, to make this bowl, but you can also use the seasonings individually to season any protein or broth.

Rooster Ramen

Ingredients For the Chicken 1 tablespoon Rooster Spice 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the Ramen 4 cloves black garlic,

chopped 1 package instant ramen 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

Instructions For the Chicken

1 cup shitake mushrooms, sliced 1 cup choy sum or bok choy, rough chopped 1 teaspoon Bulgogi Spice

For the Garnishes

2 soft boiled eggs Pinch Osaka Seasoned Salt 2 ounces sliced pink fish cake Large pinch chile threads Pinch sliced scallions or chopped chives

In a medium sized bowl, whisk together the Rooster Spice, sesame oil and soy sauce. Add the raw chicken breast and turn to coat both sides with the marinade. If time allows, let the chicken marinate a few hours or even overnight. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the skillet is hot, place marinated chicken breasts in the skillet and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from heat and allow the meat to rest a few minutes. Slice across the grain and set aside to top the ramen bowl.

For the Ramen

Follow your ramen packet cooking instructions and add chopped black garlic to the broth. Simmer broth until infused with black garlic and it changes color. Meanwhile, in a sauté pan add a teaspoon of vegetable oil. When it's hot, quickly sauté the mushrooms and bok choy until wilted. Toss the veggies in Bulgogi Spice and set aside.

Assembly

Using tongs make a nice mound of noodles in a large soup bowl. Place your sliced chicken in

a neat pile, then your veggies. Place the thinly sliced fish cake shingled on the side.

Cut your soft boiled egg and season it with Osaka Seasoned Salt. Finally, add a pinch of chile threads and scallions or chives to finish. Enjoy!

Notes

The sky is the limit with your protein, vegetable and garnish combinations. Ramen is awesome because each person can top their soup to their liking. If you want to keep it simple and just add our ramen kit garnishes to your favorite packet it will still be bright in flavor and texture.

Who are you? Lisa Wall and Scott Wall

How did you meet? We met in Chico when I (Lisa) was going to school. Scott came up to visit some friends for the weekend and we ended up crossing paths and hitting it off over hulk shots at Madison Bear Garden. Scott left (back to sea for work two days later) and we spent the first three months of our relationship getting to know each other over the phone. The Proposal? Scott took me out on a hike at Mt. Tamalpais to one of his favorite spots to just sit and relax. Once we got to the top, we set up a towel to sit and enjoy the view (so I thought) and I turned around and he was on one knee. What is love? Lisa: Love is feeling safe, encouraged, and like you’re never alone. Our love is knowing I can put my freez-

Transfers with Iron Orchard Design Sponsored by David Hipskind, Red Door Antiques

IOD Transfers are a little delicate, need a little extra care, but are so worth it. With a little instruction, they are easy to use and add instant style to your projects. (Make sure to check out our new White Transfers for a beautiful design on your deeper richer colors!)

Preparation is key.

Keep your transfer with its backing sheet until you are ready to apply. Keep free of dust or debris, which will interfere with adhesion. Do not allow the adhesive side of transfer to touch anything prior to application. When handling the transfer, avoid letting the adhesive side touch itself (don’t do in a windy environment). Do not store transfer in extreme temperatures or humid conditions, which can affect adhesion.

Application

Start with a clean, dry, matte surface. If painted, make sure it’s well cured, and if you have sanded the paint make certain there is no residual dust. All of these things will interfere with adhesion. For best adhesion, seal your project surface with a high quality, water-based polyurethane sealer in matte before applying a transfer. Carefully remove the transfer from its white backing. Slowly and carefully lower the transfer onto your intended surface, making sure that it does not touch until the placement is correct. Use small pieces of low tack tape to hold it in place. Using the provided tool, or one of your choice, start at one end of the transfer and rub firmly to adhere the image to the surface. Do this until the entire image is transferred. You are welcome for the free arm workout as well. If any parts aren’t transferred when you lift, simply lay it back down and rub more on that portion. After it is transferred, with a clean dry hand, smooth down any bits that aren’t flatly adhered. We recommend sealing with a water based (or not harsh solvent based) sealer (waxes created for chalk type paints also work well if they don’t contain harsh solvents).

My name is Dave Hipskind, owner of Red Door Antiques. As certified “Stockists” for Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan, we can help you with any of your paint projects. We have new colors and a new and improved formula that assures you the finest results. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is the “Original” (don’t settle for imitations). There is only ONE Chalk Paint. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® was introduced over 30 years ago. I have been painting for more than 50 years. With that kind of experience, we can assist in answering all your questions. We also offer monthly workshops. We offer the Annie Sloan Method. We focus on four techniques for a more rounded approach. 7 Skills You Need to Survive Homeownership Important skills to know for tackling some household emergencies with ease. Sponsored by Justin Pinnell, M&M Real Estate

What do newborn babies and homeownership have in common? Neither comes with an owner’s manual. That’s too bad because as a homeowner you’ll inevitably find yourself in a dicey situation from time to time. Wingin’ it is always an option. So is shelling out wads of money to local home contractors. But your best bet is to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of how to tackle home repairs yourself. This way you can save yourself time and money when a home repair emergency rears its ugly head.

1. Fix a Leaky Faucet

42. ardentforlife.net - winter 2022

More times than not, a failed washer inside a handle is the culprit. To replace the washer, turn off the water supply valve under the sink. Stuff a rag in the drain so you don’t lose parts, then take the handle apart. Pop the screw cover on top, remove the screw, and pull off the handle. Use a wrench to disassemble the stem, and line the parts up on the counter in the order they came off, so you know how it goes back together. Examine rubber parts or plastic cartridges for cracks, and take the offending piece to the hardware store for an exact replacement. Reassemble the parts you’ve

laid out, in reverse. Then revel in the ensuing peace and quiet.

2. Move a Refrigerator by Yourself

Clarence Yuzik, aka The Fridge Doctor, has two words for you: Magic Sliders. Put these little plastic disks under the fridge’s front feet (you can lever them off the floor with a long pry bar), then pull. Most refrigerators have wheels in the back, so the whole unit should glide forward effortlessly.

3. Dig a Hole

A stomp on a pointed shovel, that’s easy—and so’s electrocuting yourself when you slice into a buried power line. Which is why, says This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook, any prospective hole-digger should first call 811 to notify the local utilities in your area. They’ll send someone out to mark any lines you have (and possibly save you from getting buried yourself).

4. Locate a Stud

A stud finder is a handy tool to keep around the house, but let’s face it — you probably don’t own one. No worries, though, because you can use deductive reasoning to find the right spot to drive that nail into the wall. Most studs are placed at 16-inch intervals, so once you know where one is, you can usually find the rest.

home} real estate

Start at a corner, where there’s always a stud. Or take the cover plate off an electrical outlet and find out on which side it’s mounted to the stud. From there, measure 16, 32, 48 inches, and you should hit a stud at each interval. Eliminate guesswork by using a thin bit to drill a test hole at the top of the base molding, which you can easily repair with a dab of caulk.

5. Deal with a Seized Lock

Hit the 7-Eleven before you call that $100-a-visit locksmith. Some WD-40 sprayed into the keyhole will lube the mechanism quickly. If that doesn’t do it, you may have a broken spring or tumbler—and need that pro after all. If so, keep the new lock from locking up by giving it a yearly spritz of longlasting Teflon spray.

6. Check for Termites

Despite your worst nightmares, you won’t hear a distinct munching sound. And these guys don’t hide in plain sight, so you need to scout out places where wood framing is exposed, like crawl spaces. Inspect them for raised, branch-like tubes that, when broken open, reveal cream-colored or yellowish insects. Also, check where siding meets the foundation for salt-size droppings or tiny clumps of dirt next to pinholes. If you spot even one, you need a licensed and bonded exterminator to squash those tunneling bugs.

7. Unclog a Sink

“Chemicals rarely clear a stoppage—they only make a small hole,” says TOH plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey. “A full stoppage requires mechanical clearing.” Remove the stopper and block off overflow holes. With water in the bowl—the water puts more pressure on the clog— plunge with a flat-faced plunger. If that’s not enough, get under the sink and take off the trap to see if that’s where the clog is lodged. If the blockage is deeper, rent yourself a hand snake. Slowly push the coil down the drain, carefully twisting, pulling, and pushing when you hit the blockage. If the snake fails, then the still waters truly run deep. Call a drainclearing service to get things flowing. Contact Justin Pinnell DRE- 02045095, M&M Real Estate at (916) 812.0576 or www.jpsellscalifornia.com

What I’ve Learned About

Daylight Saving Time By CT Morris - BS Elementary Ed., MS Ed.

The first thing I’ve learned? The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time , not Daylight Savings Time . Moving on from there–the sad fact that the pitiful inhabitants of 48 states will be turning their clocks forward in March to start eight months of daylight saving time…the old springing forward saga. On the other hand, the lucky souls who live in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa and most of Arizona have opted out of days of sleepdeprived disorientation.

When did this crazy idea of shifting time to capture daylight take hold? Well, we can give Germany and Austria-Hungary the stink eye because they embraced daylight saving time as a way to save energy. Naturally, like COVID, it spread across the West reaching the United States and became a “thing”in 1918. Why, dear Lord, do we still do this? While standard time is determined by science, daylight savings time was determined by people. The goal was to get the best of summer and winter. Many people like long evenings in the summer, and they wanted it to not be dark in the mornings during winter. Really? Seems like I drive to work every morning “IN THE DARK”. Another reason it was invented was to save energy, but recent studies have cast doubt on

the energy argument. Research shows we actually use more electricity once DST starts. Daylight time does reduce demand for household lighting, however, researchers noted it increased the demand for cooling on summer evenings and heating in early spring and late fall. My final statement really resonates because the DST switch itself can be really deadly. Studies have found increases in car crashes, heart attacks and depression, all linked to time changes. The 24-hour cycle that helps us regulate when to sleep, rise, and eat, is thrown off. The normal functioning for health and mental health relies on a regulation of this process. The change in time (in the spring) causes a mis-match between our body’s timekeeping system and having to get to work one hour earlier. There is a movement called “Lock the Clock” the supporters just want the hour hand to stop jumping around. They believe that changing the clocks is an antiquated practice…what do you think?

Reviews brought to you by the

A Certain Appeal

By: Vanessa King

Book Reviews by Brendle Wells Jane Austen retellings are a dime a dozen. They have been adapted and re-adapted in print and on screen for decades. Every so often, however, one comes along that stands out. In the case of A Certain Appeal by Vanessa King, it is the setting that sets it apart from the pack. This, you see, is a retelling of Pride & Prejudice in a contemporary New York City burlesque club! The main beats of the story and character names are familiar: Elizabeth Bennet (known mostly as Bennet) is the stage kitten at Meryton, a club with an unclear future thanks to the pressures of New York real estate. Investor Charles Bingley and his friend Will Darcy (a hedge fund manager) are potential investors, but George Wickham is lurking about, poised to cause trouble. New contemporary details enrich the familiar, such as Bennet’s former career in architecture and the found family of performers standing in for the Bennet clan. The club setting offers a tantalizing new take on the story too—quite literally in some cases. As one might imagine, the burlesque club offers a more revealing and explicit story than the traditional. It is all the more delightful and inclusive for it. This would be an excellent choice for romance readers or anyone looking for a fun and enjoyable escape into the pages of a good book. GP Putnam’s Sons, 2021

The Guncle

By: Steven Rowley When multiple people tell you to read a book, you read a book. That is what happened to me with The Guncle. It’s absolutely delightful they told me. The audiobook is fantastic! Heartwarming! Hilarious! You’ll want a GUP too! GUP? That stands for Gay Uncle Patrick, aka Patrick O’Hara, a former sitcom star whose quiet life in Palm Springs is disrupted by the arrival of his niece and nephew for a summer stay. The children are dealing with the recent death of their mother (Patrick’s best friend and sister in-law) and their father is entering a rehab facility. Patrick has no parenting experience and he’s more than a little unsure about taking on the responsibility. But, as it turns out, he provides the perfect environment to help the children explore their feelings and in turn they do the same for him. There is sadness and grief here, but it is combined with warmth, love, and laugh out loud humor in just the right amounts. The audiobook, as read by the author, is indeed fantastic. I was often laughing through tears as I listened and I loved every single minute. If you need a pick me up or a comforting, lighthearted read, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I guarantee you’ll be recommending it to your friends, acquaintances, and random strangers as soon as you finish. GP Putnam’s Sons, 2021

Born on the Water

Author: Nikole Hannah-Jones & Renée Watson Illustrator: Nikkolas Smith Children's Book Reviews By Justin Azevedo This collection of poems weaves together into a powerful narrative of Black history and experience. When a young girl is given a school assignment to trace her roots and draw the flag of her ancestors’ homeland, she doesn’t know how to proceed; past her great-grandparents, she doesn’t know where her family came from. When she asks her grandmother for help, the family is gathered together and a history spanning hundreds of years is related, beginning in the African kingdom of Ndongo, where the people were good with their hands, brilliant with their words, and full of love and life. Stolen from Ndongo, a harrowing journey across the sea ensues for their people, which claimed the lives of many. Those that survived brought the seeds of their home with them— their knowledge, their love, their brilliance, and their determination— and used them to create a new home, new words, and new works. From there, her grandmother tells the story of the first ancestor of theirs born in this new land, and the resilience and resistance their people continue to use to survive. The next day, a newly confident student tells her own story to the class. The history that emerges from the poems is a singular achievement, pulling no punches and offering a cleareyed (and age-appropriate) view of slavery and tragedy, while also providing a strong foundation for pride and confidence. Smith’s artwork is expansive and deeply evocative. Taken together, the book is a revelation. A much-needed telling of an essential American story, recommended for ages 7 and up. Kokila, 2021

Vespertine

Author: Margaret Rogerson

In a land where the roving shades of the dead pose a grave danger to the living, Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who sanctifies the bodies of the deceased so that their souls do not reappear as ravenous spirits. Artemisia’s hands are scarred and her affect is cold and distant, due to being the victim of a possession when she was very young. She is avoided by most of her peers at the convent, and prefers it that way. But when an army of possessed soldiers suddenly descends on the Gray Sisters, she hastily binds herself to a holy relic to defend them— and finds herself sharing her own mind with a revenant, the most powerful and dangerous kind of spirit imaginable. Forced to flee the convent, Artemisia must work with the revenant inside her if she has any chance of stopping this new spread of spirit-borne terror, and may be forced to reckon with everything she was taught as true and trustworthy as a result. This young-adult fantasy is heavy on worldbuilding, and quick to introduce a hierarchy of spirits ranging from harmless to deadly (depending on who they were and how they died), detailing the powers each spirit commands and the best way to fight them off. Artemisia herself is a complicated character who reads as layered and authentic, and her interplay with the revenant trapped in her head evolves from a tense standoff into a deeply satisfying relationship along the course of the novel. The pacing varies, but resolves into a thrilling climax and a somewhat open ending that demands a sequel. Immersive, gritty, and intensely readable fantasy, recommended for ages 14 and up. Getting to Know the

By Justin Pinnell Photos courtesy of Jerry Braxmeyer

The HEART of JB is a nonprofit foundation that is focused on shining the light on people who need help the most. They deliver hope and confidence to individual disadvantaged kids by donating brand new bikes, or school supplies, and giving them a hand up in life. How can our community give to HEART of JB? Jerry C Braxmeyer, Director of HEART of JB

The typical donation is money donations made through our website. However, I have had, in the past, people donate an actual bike. The problem with the donation of a bike is we do not have storage space to store bikes, yet. Our goal is to grow so we will have that capacity to store bikes. As with all nonprofits, I am in need of volunteers–especially when I have a large request and during our golf event that I have every year.

Can you share stories of individuals whose lives have been touched by HEART of JB?

We asked the founder, Jerry Braxmeyer a few questions about HEART of JB.

How did HEART of JB start?

It started with a vision and the belief that all kids deserve to have that feeling of owning a brand new bike… that allows them their first taste of freedom. We started in 2017, with the goal of targeting underprivileged and high risk youth. We’ve been able to donate over 700 bikes to multiple nonprofits here in EG; such as EG Food Bank, Chicks in Crisis, EGUSD, Harvest Church, and many individual families as well. It is our vision to expand our presence to every underserved classroom and high risk youth in the country. 48. ardentforlife.net - winter 2022

We give bikes every year as well as cash donations to needy families. Last year, we donated 30 bikes to RYLA (Rotary) for their yearly camp, usually for the foster youth they have in attendance. I was told one particular attendee was having his 15th birthday, the only gift he got was one of the bikes we donated. In addition, my sister (last year) notified me that her employee's husband had passed away suddenly. She had three kids and no money for Christmas. HEART of JB donated $500.00 so she could have a Christmas. Lastly, Marie Jachino… of the Elk Grove Food Bank contacted me and advised me that one of her migrant families did not have any money for Christmas. HEART of JB donated two brand new bikes and locks. The smile on those kids' faces make it all worthwhile.

What are HEART of JB's goals this year?

Our main goal this year is to make the 2nd Annual Golf Classic a major success. That event will take place 6/20/2022 at Rancho Murieta. We are hoping it's a huge success so we can donate school supplies and bikes throughout the 2022 fiscal year. Before 2022, we could only donate during the Christmas holiday. We are teaming up with the EG Food Bank to assist with any need they see fit for us to participate in.

What is the long-term goal of HEART of JB?

Our long-term goal is to expand our services to include school supplies. Last year, we donated 110 backpacks with all the supplies for the Valley High School Foster Youth Services. We want to continue this and expand that as well. We also have a vision of being able to offer services to Vets that are in need. The needs we are striving to fill–helping with transportation, food, bills, and even assisted walking devices. This is of course a long term goal as we are in the infant stages of our mission.

What they do & How to donate

Delivering brand new bikes to high risk children and underprivileged youth throughout the Sacramento Region. We like to “shine the light on others that need it most.” All donations will be used to purchase new bikes. Every dollar can change a child’s life, a community, and a generation. You can go to our website to donate, heartofjb.com. You may also make a donation over the phone by calling Jerry C Braxmeyer, Director of HEART of JB at 916-849-9689.

Astaxanthin and CoQ10 A Perfect Team Written By Terry Lemerond Sponsored by Dianna Singh, Owner of Elk Grove Vitamins

Antioxidants Really Do Matter

It's not unusual to hear almost every food or nutrient referred to as an antioxidant. And because of this, it's just as likely that the word starts to lose any meaning or importance. After all, if antioxidants are so common, are they such a big deal? Well, the fact is, antioxidants are very much a big deal. After all, stopping free radicals can make all the difference between oxidative damage that develops into a tumor, or gets stopped in its tracks. Antioxidants each have varying health properties, so combining the right team can provide ideal synergy for health and longevity. Astaxanthin and CoQ10 are perfect examples of this.

Astaxanthin: A Unique Compound

Astaxanthin has a unique structure that makes it both fat and water soluble. This doubles its capabilities, allowing it to cross the blood-brain barrier, and protect cells from the inside and the outside simultaneously. Astaxanthin is simply a one in a million nutrient that fights back against the very types of oxidative stress that accelerate aging, and damage the heart, skin, and other organs. As a carotenoid, astaxanthin is in the same family as beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein. It gives salmon, trout, and shrimp a pinkish color, and when those animals are deficient in astaxanthin, it shows as an unhealthy paleness. When it comes to supplemental sources of astaxanthin, the best is from Haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater microalgae. Astaxanthin helps the microalgae harvest light, working with chlorophyll to create food energy, while protecting it from the damaging effects of free radicals. 52. ardentforlife.net - winter 2022

Co010: Required Everywhere in Your Mind and Body Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is well known and has thousands of published studies showing its health benefits for heart, kidney, liver, eye, and brain diseases as well as neurodegenerative disorders. It does what no other nutrient can do--it strengthens energy production in almost every cell in your body, including your heart and brain. This makes Co010 one of the hardest-working nutrients around. But even though CoQ10 can be found in almost every cell, we usually don't have enough of it on board and deficiencies due to statin drug use, age, intense physical activity, stress, or prolonged illness are common.

Power for Heart, Arteries, and Cardiovascular System

If you're worried about the strength of your heart, cholesterol levels, blood pressure numbers, or have a family history of cardiovascular disease, astaxanthin and CoQ10 should be top on your nutrient list. Clinical research shows that astaxanthin boosts HDL (good) cholesterol, reduces LDL (bad) cholesterol, prevents LDL oxidation (a leading cause of clogged arteries), lowers triglycerides, and increases adiponectin, a peptide that may help you lose weight and regulate blood sugar. Likewise, CoQ10 helps restore cardiovascular strength to heart failure patients-even those who have suffered severe heart attacks. It also reduces blood pressure levels and restores CoQ10 levels lost when taking statin drugs (prescription drugs that lower cholesterol).

Stops Viral and Bacterial Invaders

Recent preclinical research shows that astaxanthin is a smart nutrient to employ to fight bacterial and viral respiratory diseases. That's because while even small dosages of astaxanthin increase immune defending natural killer cell, T cell, and B cell activity, the nutrient doesn't push the immune system into overdrive, creating cytokine storm reactions. Plus, it can be used with conventional therapies.

TERRY'S BOTTOM LINE

For anyone who spends time on a computer, and that's many of us, astaxanthin is a perfect choice for keeping your eyes healthy. In a clinical study of individuals who worked on computers, it reduced eye strain complaints by 54 percent in just one month. Keeps You Thinking Clearly

Research shows that both astaxanthin and CoQ10 can help preserve connections in the brain. Clinical work has found that astaxanthin improved delayed recall, processing speed, verbal memory (remembering lists, names, etc. presented verbally), divided attention recall, and response time in older individuals with mild cognitive impairments. Scientific research in Japan found that CoQ10 significantly reduced the loss of nerve signaling in the brain, and earlier clinical work found that CoQ10 may slow cognitive decline if introduced early enough in patients diagnosed with Parkinson's. CoQ10 can also reduce the pain, intensity duration, and frequency of migraines by stabilizing mitochondrial energy in the brain

Preserves Youthful Skin and Fights DNA Damage

A clinical study of women who worked outdoors from August to December and were exposed to damaging effects of the sun and wind found that astaxanthin preserved healthy skin. It suppressed inflammation, reduced wrinkles, and strengthened the skin matrix and structure slowing the visible signs of aging. Other clinical research found that astaxanthin used as both a supplement and topical cream improved the appearance of crow's feet, restored elasticity, softened skin texture, reduced age spots, and boosted moisture content. In some cases, crow's feet wrinkles disappeared completely in just two months.

Aside from stopping skin damage, astaxanthin activates natural pathways throughout the body that intercept and kill cancer cells, stopping the growth cycle and spread of tumors.

Stops Eye Strain and Preserves Vision

For anyone who spends time on a computer, and that's many of us, astaxanthin is a perfect choice for keeping your eyes healthy. In a clinical study of individuals who worked on computers, it reduced eye strain complaints by 54 percent in just one month. Astaxanthin can also protect the eyes from cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Clinical work shows that even one month of astaxanthin supplementation can boost the blood flow to the macula, the focusing center of the retina. As one review stated, astaxanthin is one of the only antioxidants to "build into" the structure of eyes, so it serves as an on-board defense system of the retina and the delicate blood vessels that support it.

Astaxanthin and CoQ10 are two nutrient powerhouses that can help you live longer and healthier lives • Makes the heart and arteries stronger • Bolsters immunity • Preserves and improves mental function and memory • Prevents skin damage and fine lines • Promotes longevity and healthy aging • Protects against macular degeneration and other eye diseases HERE IS THE FORMULA I SUGGEST Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) 50 mg

Astaxanthin 2 mg (from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae)

Better Absorption = Better Results

There's no doubt that the better absorbed a nutrient is, the more effective it can be. That's where gamma cyclodextrin, a plant-based absorption enhancer can help. It surrounds the ingredients with a thin layer that helps fat-soluble nutrients absorb easily. Gamma cyclodextrin has a strong track record in improving bioavailabilty. In fact, in the case of CoQ10, it's been shown to boost absorption by as much as 800 percent--a big advantage that can mean even better results. This information is for educational purposes only. Benefits of Lifting Weights

Written by D’Lee Daleo & Jamie McCalman, Switch Fitness

With the new year upon us, it’s time for many people to set new goals, try new things, or create new habits. Health is often an area of focus when the new year rolls around. Losing weight, fighting off disease, improving your immune system, setting an example for loved ones, staying mobile or regaining mobility are just a few of the reasons that health and fitness seem to be on the top of most people’s list for things to focus on. For many, the biggest challenge is making time to work out. Considering that most people are pressed for time, it’s good to know what type of workout is the most beneficial. Generally speaking, the best workout is the one that works for you, fits in your schedule, and keeps you motivated. That being said, if you are looking for the most bang for your buck, lifting weights is your answer. There are numerous benefits to lifting weights and the benefits can be helpful at all stages of 54. ardentforlife.net - winter 2022

life. If you are not currently lifting weights, we hope to inspire you to start. If you currently are using weights, we hope to encourage you to continue.

in the future. Activities of daily living are made much easier when you lift weights. It also helps improve your quality of life.

One of the most obvious reasons to lift weights is to build muscle. This does not mean you have to lift to look like a bodybuilder. Weight training helps increase and preserve muscle mass, which will be lost as you age. Increasing or maintaining muscle mass helps with daily living such as being able to easily get up from a seated position, carrying groceries, or picking up dog food. These may seem like things you do without thinking, but these daily tasks can become more difficult over time if muscle mass is not maintained.

Another benefit to lifting weights is a boost to your metabolism. Fat tissue burns less calories than muscle tissue does. The more muscle tissue you have, the more effectively your body burns fat, even when you are at rest. Studies have also shown that your metabolism stays elevated for a longer period of time after weightlifting, even more so than a cardio session. That means that your body is burning fat even after you have set the weights down. Some studies have shown as much as 90% of calories burned occurred after the weightlifting session has ended. Most people think that cardio is the best way to lose weight, but weightlifting has shown to be more efficient at boosting metabolism which helps to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Lifting weights can help maintain a more independent lifestyle for longer periods of time. So, weight training can benefit you now and also

You may have also heard that weight training increases bone strength. Bone strength is important to help ward off osteoporosis (especially as you age). The sites most likely to suffer fractures from osteoporosis are the hips, spine and wrists which are also the areas that benefit most from strength training. The stress that lifting weights puts on your bones keeps them healthy and strong. Lifting weights (while you're young) will greatly help maintain bone strength as you age… but it's never too late to get the benefits from weightlifting. This is especially important for women who are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis. You can also help prevent injuries and rehab injuries with safe weight training. By strengthening muscles around joints, like the knee joint, you can help improve stability and reduce pain. It is possible that it can even help relieve arthritis. Strength training increases the number and diameter of collagen fibrils in tendons. Tendons

Q&A with Switch Fitness instructor, Cheleen Cook How long have you been a fitness instructor? I’m going on my 19th year as an instructor. How did you become a fitness instructor? I started out with taking Zumba classes and loved it so much I started teaching it and then branched out from there. What is your favorite part about your job? My favorite part about teaching is the smile on students' faces, enjoying the workout, and staying healthy. What would you tell someone who is hesitant about trying a group fitness class? If hesitant to try a class, I always say they can take any class and go at their own place. What advice would you give to someone who is unsure about weight training? It enhances your ability to move safely and effectively in life, because muscle strength is crucial in making it easier to do your day-to-day tasks. It also protects bone health, helps with chronic conditions, helps your body burn calories efficiently, improves cardiovascular benefits, and weight management. What is your favorite form of exercise? My favorite form of exercise is barre because it’s a full body workout.

The more muscle tissue you have, the more effectively your body burns fat, even when you are at rest. connect your muscles to your bones so strengthening them helps with minimizing injuries. Strong tendons also increase flexibility and range of motion, which also helps to prevent injury. Cardiovascular health may not be a benefit you immediately associate with weight training, but it is another reason to pick up weights. One study in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found that women who engaged in weightlifting had a 17% lower risk for developing cardiovascular disease compared to those who didn’t lift weights. The same group also found that lifting weights can reduce the risk for a heart attack or stroke by 40-70%. As you strengthen the heart and blood vessels, you improve blood circulation. This can be accomplished with less than an hour of weight training per week. Cognitive decline is an issue that can impact us all as we age. Lifting weights has shown, in multiple studies, to improve brain function. This includes processing speed, memory, and executive function. Improved blood flow, reduced inflammation and an increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor are all linked to learning and memory. Weight training has a positive impact on all of these areas. This means that resistance training is a tool that can be used to help prevent cognitive decline. Diabetes is a disease that impacts millions of Americans every year. You may be able to lower your risk of developing diabetes (or help to manage it if you have been diagnosed) with strength training. Greater muscle mass has the ability to improve blood sugar management because skeletal muscle helps increase insulin sensitivity. It also removes glucose from the blood and sends it to muscle cells which reduces blood sugar levels. This means that weight training is very beneficial if you are at risk or have been diagnosed with diabetes.

While we often associate weightlifting to increasing muscle mass, multiple studies have shown the benefits do not stop with bigger muscles. There are many reasons to incorporate weight training into your fitness routine, even if your goal is not to gain more muscle. You don’t need to bulk up to get the many benefits of resistance training. Taking care of yourself at every stage of your life is important. For younger people, the things you do or don’t do, can have a big impact later in life. The good news is that even if you weren’t healthy when you were younger, it is never too late to make a change and receive benefits. Switch Fitness (916) 838-1456

The Reality Of

I have a complicated relationship with ‘yes’. Maybe it’s entanglement... I’m not really sure. But the truth is, I LOVE saying ‘Yes’. Clearly, I’m working to recover from years of people pleasing (as in daily work) but that aside, I really like to say ‘yes’. I like to get in the mix, be a part of what’s going on and don’t even get me started about my struggle with FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). All of these reasons are why my tendency to say ‘yes’ gets really complicated. It’s complicated because, as much as I want to be involved and help, I often lack intentionality in my ‘yes’ and find myself in situations or agreeing to tasks that are way outside of how I actually want/need to be prioritizing my time. Over the past month alone, I’ve had least two occasions where I invited someone to join a committee and I was BLOWN away by the discerning questions they asked me back so they could decide, with full information, whether they could agree to my ask. I honestly thought, “Why don’t I do this?” I also had a handful of situations pop up over the last few months

58. ardentforlife.net - winter 2022

health} where I found out additional information much further down the road (because I never slowed down to ask in the first place) that made me really regret the commitment I had made to said task. A total cluster!

The culmination of all of this made me realize that as much as ‘yes’ excites me, it also really depletes me. And the more that I say ‘yes’ without slowing down to see the reality of what it means for my time, my energy, and my schedule, the more I’m perpetuating a pattern that does not serve me. When I say ‘yes’ to something, I’m also saying ‘no’ to something else I’ve already committed to. Sure, we all know that at the end of the day, there are no more than 24 hours allotted to each of us. And yet, I was attempting to stretch my to-dos and commitments into a 30hour day. And that is why I’m working to reset. As we move into this new year season, I’m using it as a way to reset how I say ‘Yes’. Creating a decision tree if you will, so that I can be sure that all of the ‘yes’s’ I give are fully aligned with how I want to spend my time, (how I can best use my time) and to be really sure they support

the biggest priorities I have, which for me is my primary relationships.

What I have found is that the more I say ‘yes’ to working more and volunteering more, the less I have to give to my husband and kids. Sure, I may be getting home at the same time every night, but I show up so tense and depleted that I can barely make it through dinner without my head hitting the plate in exhaustion. I find myself letting commitments I’ve made to those that matter the most start to slip through the cracks because I’ve stretched myself too thin. I see myself making more simple mistakes out of an endless loop of trying to multitask and “kill 13 birds with one stone”. And it’s not sustainable. I think my tendency to say ‘yes’ mixed with my deep desire for life to get back to normal has created a toxic combination of really overextending myself.

And that is why I’m committed to become disentangled (if that’s even a thing) with my overzealous desire to say ‘yes’. My decision tree looks sort of like this: • Does this event/task deplete or uplift me? • If I say ‘yes’ to this, what do I also need to say ‘no’ to? • Does committing to this event/task align with my highest priorities? Once I’ve worked my way through solidifying my answer AND if it ends up being a ‘no’, then comes the hard part…delivering the ‘no’.

Because for myself (and I’m sure a lot of you), it can feel hard to say ‘no’. Maybe saying ‘no’ is wrapped up in feeling like you’re letting someone down or disappointing them. Or maybe you’re worried you won’t be invited or included again if you decline now. There are so many reasons why we struggle to say ‘no’ and yet when it’s done well, saying ‘no’ can be a huge relief. Not just to you, but to the person that asked. Because when you say ‘no’ with intentionality, it makes room for the better fit to occur. Whether that better fit is a different person for the job, or a shift in vision that creates a bet-

When I say ‘yes’ to something, I’m also saying ‘no’ to something else I’ve already committed to. ter outcome…who knows…but at the end of the day, an aligned ‘no’ is just as useful as an aligned ‘yes’. The good news is that a reset is completely possible AND I know I’m not the only one who may need it. As you may know, I’m a relationship therapist and if there is one thing I’ve heard echoed in my sessions, it’s that many of us are overextended, both emotionally and physically, right now, and we are needing to be a bit more discerning about where we give our time and energy.

My deepest encouragement to you is to allow this season to be one of reset and realignment. Use my decision tree or tweak it to make it your own. Look at your schedule, your routines, and your unintentional habits to ensure that all of your ‘yes’s’ are aligned with your highest priorities. And when you’re able to offer an aligned ‘yes’, say it with the utmost enthusiasm. I’m cheering you on!

Food is Medicine.

Protecting Your Heart Can Start on Your Plate By Rajiv Misquitta, MD, Kaiser Permanente

If making healthier lifestyle choices was among your New Year’s resolutions, then hopefully you are off to a good start in 2022. Perhaps you resolved to eat healthier food, lose weight, quit smoking, or find better ways to manage your stress. You may not realize it, but each of those has something in common – they can all be connected to heart health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death of women and men in the United States and is responsible for 1 in 4 deaths. In fact, heart disease kills more women than men. The good news is there is a lot we can do to help prevent heart disease and with February being Heart Health Month, it’s a great time to talk about it. As the chief of the Lifestyle Medicine Department at Kaiser Permanente in South Sacramento, a major part of my practice is helping patients make healthier lifestyle choices to prevent or even reverse chronic conditions. 60. ardentforlife.net - winter 2022

There is a great deal of research that diets higher in plant-based foods are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular death and disability in the general population. The phytochemicals and antioxidants in plant-based foods boost your immune system while also reducing inflammation. Plant-based foods are also high in fiber. Numerous studies have shown that diets high in fiber are linked to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of diabetes, lower cholesterol and a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Plant-based eating is eating foods from plants in their whole, unprocessed form. The focus is on vegetables and fruits over food from animals. Meals typically include beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds. Eating this way has been shown to reduce cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. I have seen the benefits of plant-based eating with many of my patients who were at risk of having their first heart attack, or even a second one.

Although changing the way you have eaten most of your life may seem difficult, you will be amazed at how quickly you will start to feel better. You may notice a gradual reduction in weight and cholesterol within the first few weeks. If you are diabetic, you may notice more stability in your blood sugars as well.

You can start gradually and progress. Try out meatless Mondays or eating plant-based lunches every day. Eggplant, soy, tofu, and beans are excellent substitutes for meat. Have fun using spices and new flavors. There are plenty of milk alternatives, too. The key is to move away from animal proteins. Many of your favorite foods and recipes have a plant-based twist. You can make a burger with a grilled portabella mushroom, pizza with a pita bread base topped with your favorite vegetables and mushrooms on a tomato sauce, wrap with beans and hummus, rice bowl with beans, spinach, tomatoes, and mixed vegetables.

health} Symptoms of a heart attack include: Chest pain or pressure, or a strange feeling in the chest. Sweating. Shortness of breath. Nausea or vomiting. Pain, pressure, or a strange feeling in the back, neck, jaw, or upper belly, or in one or both shoulders or arms. Lightheadedness or sudden weakness. If you think you are having a heart attack, call 911 and get emergency care immediately. Not all vegetarian foods are plant-based. There is no meat in a french fry. But if you are watching your heart health, you will want to limit or avoid oily fats and sugars by steering away from deep-fried and processed foods like chips and cookies. Plant-based eating is associated with weight loss, which could further help protect your heart. Lowering your weight by just 10 percent can make a significant difference in reducing your risk for heart disease. There are a lot of online resources available to help you, from plantbased recipes to community support groups. Remember: preventing a heart attack in the future could start with what’s on your plate tonight. Lunar New Year Elk Grove Celebration Photos by Angelina Dugoni

January 29th, Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen and Vice-Mayor Darren Suen brought a Lunar New Year celebration to Elk Grove. Traditional costumes and ornaments were on display to showcase Chinese, Vietnamese, Mien, and Korean cultures that, among others, celebrate Lunar New Year. Whereas this Lunar New Year celebration began on February 1, 2022, preparations started earlier with cleaning homes and businesses. No cleaning was done on the New Year’s Day to ensure the good luck from new beginnings is not washed away. Then, visiting family and friends takes place for the next several days.

Lion dances and firecrackers ward off evil spirits in Chinese and Vietnamese cultures. Red envelopes with money are also given to children. The Mien culture presents an egg dyed red to symbolize caring for the body and soul. Korean Lunar New Year celebrations include traditional games. Of course, traditional foods are part of every cultural tradition. This is the Year of the Tiger, which symbolizes bravery, confidence and strong will. Happy Lunar New Year!

Where are we and how did we get here?? It has been a difficult two years with COVID, and we have had to adjust our lives tremendously. Many people have had COVID, and most have recovered, but unfortunately, we have also lost some of them. We have learned to stay at home as much as possible, wear masks if we have to go out, and we always keep our social distancing. Life in Elk Grove and all over the world is very different in 2022. Hopefully, it will all change and be much better in the next months! Life will return to NORMAL!

This is a look at where we are in 2022, and how we got to where we are. We will take a look at our city and the organizations and groups that are around us and are part of our normal lives.

Growth continues, and we will soon see the Sky River Casino in our south area. And, although the move of the Sacramento Zoo to Elk Grove is not finalized, it is likely to happen in 2022. People continue to move here from other places, and we always welcome them. Life in Elk Grove is good, and it will continue to bring us great joy!

Events in Elk Grove - It is hard to predict which events will be able to take place due to Covid, but it would be great if the Western Festival, the Cultural Diversity Festival, and the Strauss Festival will be able to take place. We will likely have the Dickens Street Faire again, and, hopefully, many other events as well.

Scholarships for Students – Scholarships will continue to help our graduating students achieve their goals for the future. New donors are always appreciated for the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation. Elections – It is election year in 2022, and there will be some changes in our area. Boundaries for districts will change, and we will have many people listed for each position. We will follow the changes carefully, and we will have to make many decisions on what is best for all of us.
