One year on... We are all amazed and delighted at the progress that the Health Foundry has achieved in its first year. The sense of energy, innovation and determination to overcome obstacles are palpable if you spend any time there. This has been noticed across London and further afield where the Health Foundry is establishing a name as one of the leading places for digital health entrepreneurs to tap in to. Well done to the team who have created Health Foundry as a living community and thank you to all the members for joining – when it must have been a bit of a leap in the dark. We could not have envisaged any of this when in 2015 we sat down to think about how Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity could help health entrepreneurs. Digital health was in its early stages of development but seemed to hold plenty of promise for both the NHS and its patients. We asked the digital health community what they needed and the message was clear – we need access to the NHS to understand its clinical, operational, IT and purchasing issues. We thought that we could provide those links to the NHS and build a community of digital health entrepreneurs which would learn from and support each other. When we identified the space opposite St Thomas’ Hospital and took a suitably imaginative view on what it could become – Health Foundry was born. We are delighted to continue our support for Health Foundry as it enters its second year. Much has been achieved but the opportunities that digital products and services can have on health are growing apace and we hope Health Foundry will be equal to the challenge. Our long term goal is to see the Health Foundry at the centre of a thriving campus of health businesses as some graduate to their own space but stay connected and new entrepreneurs get the important support they need at the beginning of their journey.

Our purpose Health Foundry’s vision is for a healthier UK with a more effective and digitally-enabled healthcare service. Our mission is to improve health and wellbeing by bringing together a wide range of people, start-ups and organisations and supporting them to create and adopt scalable digital health solutions. We do this through a four-pronged approach: 1

Firstly, we support startups to develop better digital health products by providing a wide range of business support resources; from hosted workspace and access to a community of peers to industry events and 1-to-1 surgeries. Secondly, we connect the startups with the health system in order for them to get feedback on their products and ease their access to market. Thirdly, we work with actors across the health system to enable them to adopt digital health products, e.g. through learning expeditions, demos or training. Lastly, we help set the conditions for new digital health products to emerge by fostering creative collisions and organising idea hacks.

OUR IMPACT MEMBER STORIES

medCrowd Dr Felix Jackson I joined the Health Foundry to extend my networks within the NHS by connecting into the digital health startup scene in London. The Foundry has helped me get a better understanding of the complex issues the NHS faces as I attend many events and often work from the Foundry so I can meet key people. Which, in turn, has helped me develop medCrowd, a compliant messaging technology, in the right way so it is now exactly what the NHS really needs.

Mental Snapp Hannah Chamberlain, Founder It’s hard getting into the health sector - establishing networks, finding funders, demonstrating credibility - so when I saw the Health Foundry I knew they would fill a big gap in the market. I signed up our company Mental Snapp almost as soon as they started I was so keen! Since then they’ve been brilliant at helping us get known in the sector, introduced us to some cool potential collaborations and been invaluable at providing advice, profile and showcasing opportunities. Really glad we joined, and plus the office is a great space to work, meet and network in. Thanks to the team for all their hard work in running such a open and welcoming community.

Leanne Summers Consulting Leanne Summers, Founder I joined Health Foundry after returning to the UK from the US. I’d been working in digital health and patient communications for a number of years and having been in the USA I had started to see that the US was too fragmented for wide digital health adoption, so I wanted to come back to the UK and delve into the NHS landscape more than I’d done before. It was at this time that the Health Foundry was being opened and I couldn’t wait to sign up. I was consulting with a New York based digital health team, Pixie Scientific, looking at entering the UK market with their smart UTI detecting incontinence pad. Through a series of lunch and learns, show and tells and general bumping into folks through Health Foundry I’m proud to call it my base. As projects have moved through their phases (including a retreat back to the US) I have used the Health Foundry as a source of credibility for the work that I do and the network it has helped to facilitate me expanding. The Slack group is a great source of information and the space itself and team have impressed many a client (from micro start-up to big pharma). I know it’s in its early days but in a “co-working” space boom for London it’s great to be able to head to a “home” for digital health, where we can share challenges and wins and ultimately be more successful in the long run.

Welldoing [a site to help service users find the right therapist or counsellor] were introduced to the National Pharmacists Association which led them to be invited to join a national pilot scheme aimed at supporting health care in local communities.

KING’S COLLEGE

Kokoon [the world’s first sleep sensing headphones] came to event about the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) which led to an introduction to the Papworth Sleep centre and King’s College Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience who are trialling their sleep device.


OUR STRATEGY OUR PLAN FOR 2017-2018

In our first year of operating, Health Foundry has succesfully established itself as a health tech hub and is now home to over 125 members working in the digital health sector. Furthermore we have hosted more than 100 industry events and provided our members with valuable connections and access to expert advice. We have also ventured into helping organisations transform the way they provide their health services by hosting workshops, designs sprints, round tables and learning expeditions. Lastly, as an impartial and trusted systems enabler, we have started to bring diverse communities together to solve the health challenges most important to them. In 2017-2018 we want to do more of this.

We want to mature as a health tech hub, growing our community and providing more tailored support to our members. As part of our Support and Connect strategy (see page 3 for details) we have expanded our team to include a Community Manager and a Healthcare Connector in order to provide more introductions to key actors across the health system and facilitate further collaboration and peer-to-peer support within our community. We want to explore the opportunities for providing support to organisations looking to transform the way they work with health and wellbeing. As part of our Enable strategy we will reach out to more local actors, from primary, secondary and community care in order to explore how we might support them in achieving their digital agenda. We want to pilot ways of setting the conditions for new digital health product to emerge by fostering creative collisions and organising idea hacks. As part of our Condition Setting strategy we will be hosting our annual Health Summit focused on multiple long term conditions followed by a Hacking Health Hackathon aimed at bringing together a wide range of stakeholders to create innovative solutions to this complex health challenge.
