WELCOME

Dear Distance Riders,

We’re honored to welcome you to the 2025 Distance National Championships at the historic Old Selam Ride Site in New Centerville, Idaho—a setting that perfectly captures the heart and heritage of distance riding.

Few events showcase the true spirit and legacy of the Arabian horse like Distance Nationals. Bred for endurance, loyalty, and heart, Arabians, Half-Arabians, and Anglo-Arabians have carried people across great distances for centuries. This event is a living tribute to that history, and a powerful reminder of the enduring bond between horse and rider.

We are proud to stand alongside our valued partner organizations—the Appaloosa Horse Club, Paso Fino Horse Association, Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry, American Morgan Horse Association, and the Akhal-Teke Association of America. Their collaboration and continued support help make this event a celebration of all distance breeds.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Regina Rose, Debbie Johnston, and their dedicated team, who have worked tirelessly as Ride Manager, Trail Master, and volunteer coordinators. Their behind-the-scenes efforts ensure a seamless and memorable experience for everyone involved.

And of course, a special thank you to our Distance Nationals Commission. Their leadership and vision have helped this event grow into a hallmark of excellence. Their commitment not only honors the traditions of the past but also helps shape a stronger future for distance riding.

Regards,

Hi Everyone!

We would like to welcome you to the AHA National Distance Championships at The Old Selam Pioneer Endurance Ride.

This ride is situated in the historic Boise Basin, which was one of the nation’s richest gold mining districts where gold was discovered in 1862. More gold was pulled from present-day Boise County than from the entire state of Alaska. At its peak in the mid-1860s, Idaho City was the largest city in the Northwest, and it was this rapid population influx that led to the establishment of the Idaho Territory in 1863.

Ride camp is on private property along Henry’s Creek where there are still reminders of old gold mining slews. The course for all three days has great footing consisting of old forest logging roads, single and two track trails traveling in and out of the trees and along the creeks. There will be natural water supplemented with water troughs on the trails. The weather can be warm, but it has also frosted at night here so be prepared. Camp is located among the trees with open areas to accommodate big rigs. We will have a designated area for 100-mile riders to park. This ride is in the forest and cell service is spotty, StarLink satellite service will be available in camp, and we will have a local ham radio in residence to help man US Forest Service gates and water crossings where they will be taking rider numbers to track rider progress, keep everyone safe and advise ride camp of any problems.

Our local club, The Southwest Idaho Trail & Distance Riders (SWIT&DR) started the Old Selam endurance ride in 1979 with a one-day endurance ride and a ride and tie. Over the years it has grown into a 3-day Pioneer Ride offering a 100 mile ride.

Old Selam, the ride’s namesake, was an Idaho State Penitentiary work horse who was used twice in prison breaks. Following the first escape attempt, it was reported that Prisoners were said to be glad to see Selam when he returned to the prison. The warden was glad

too and said it would have been a pity to have such a noble horse “knocking around” with people who didn’t appreciate his worth. He acknowledged that Meeks had taken care of the “thoroughbred” but nevertheless threatened to charge him with horse-stealing.

The second escape on December 30 1901 resulted in the return of Old Selam, but the prisoner, Sam Bruner, who was serving a term for stealing sheep was never found. So keep a look out for the long lost prisoner as you ride the trails on the ride.

We will have a local historian/storyteller in camp on Saturday night to share the story.

Thank you for making this ride part of your calendar for 2025. We are excited to share our “backyard” with you.

Dear Competitors:

Welcome to the Distance Horse National Championships (DHNC) hosted by the Arabian Horse Association (AHA). Once again, we are pleased to present several rides over three days including AERC sanctioned and AHA recognized open rides, Breed Championship rides for five breeds and the 3 day Limited Distance Challenge.

While the events are hosted by AHA, we have partnered with the Appaloosa Horse Club, Paso Fino Horse Association, Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry, American Morgan Horse Association and Akhal-Teke Association of America. This event would not be possible without their invaluable help and support. We also need to extend special thanks to Regina Rose, Debbie Johnston and their team who have worked tirelessly as the on-site Ride Manager, Trail Master and to solicit volunteers.

The support of our vendors and sponsors is also invaluable and greatly appreciated in contributing to a successful event. Please

consider them when you make your next purchase.

Finally, thanks to you, the competitors, for without your dedication to this sport there would be no DHNC.

So welcome, thank you and enjoy the rides.

Dear Competitors:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2025 Arabian Horse Association’s Distance Nationals. How our Arabian, Half Arabian, and Anglo-Arabian horses fare in distance rides worldwide is a major source of pride, not only for myself, but of our 80,000 owners in the US and Canada. Therefore, I would like to express my appreciation for your choosing to participate in our ride this year.

We appreciate all the breeds that have partnered with us which are the Appaloosa Horse Club, the Paso Fino Horse Association, the Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry, the American Morgan Horse Association and the Akhal-Teke Association of America. We are glad we have the opportunity to partner with these organizations to create the all-inclusive Distance Horse National Championships.

I would also like to express my appreciation for the planning that our Distance National Commission and staff have expended in preparing for this year’s event. Also to Debbie Johnston & Regina Rose and her team for all their hard work to prepare for ride. AHA greatly appreciates all the sponsors who have stepped forward in support of this year’s ride and I would like to express my gratitude in their support. In addition, I also want to thank our Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes Commission for their continued support of Sweepstakes incentive money for Sweepstakes participants in this year’s ride. This is a major reason for insuring your Arabians are not only registered but entered into the Sweepstakes Program. There is $9,000 in payouts available this year ($1,500 per National Ride). And

lastly, a big “THANK YOU” to the volunteers that make our National Rides a great success. So best of luck to everyone and thanks for traveling to the Distance Horse National Champions at the Old Selam ride site in New Centerville, ID for our 2025 competition!

Sincerely,

Dear Competitors, Friends of Endurance Riding & Competitive Trail Riding,

The Appaloosa Horse Club is pleased to once again join our hosts, the Arabian Horse Association, in its efforts to highlight distance/ endurance as an important aspect of our breeds. The Appaloosa National Championship Endurance Rides (ANCER) and Appaloosa National Championship Competitive Trail Ride (ANCCTR) showcase the stamina, athleticism, and disposition of our incredible horses. To all the participants, we wish you a fun, safe, and successful ride. Thank you for being a part of this event! I look forward to congratulating you all upon completion. ApHC members are reminded that registered Appaloosas that are also registered with AHA as half-Arabian are encouraged to enter both national championships. We extend sincere gratitude to all the volunteers and staff responsible for conducting this year’s ride.

Sincerely,

Dear Competitors

The Akhal-Teke Association of America is happy to be involved with the AHA Distance Horse National Championships. Our goal as an organization is to preserve, promote, and protect the Akhal-Teke breed. Every year more and more Tekes are competing in equestrian sports including endurance, dressage, jumping, and eventing...and getting noticed for their athleticism, smooth gaits, and exotic look. We have a program called the “Incentive Awards” which offers a monetary reward for all purebred and part bred horses registered with ATAA that are out competing. For the 2025 year, the total amount dispersed will be $5000. Please visit the ATAA website www.akhal-teke.org for more information about this rare breed!

Steve Bradley Photographer

I will be the ride photographer for this event. My name is Steve Bradley and I am an Endurance horse event photographer based in Idaho City, Idaho. My goal is to capture genuine photos of the horse and rider as they traverse the various courses during the event. I have been a ride photographer since 1999 and have traveled the western United States photographing various events in many western states.

My career as a ride photographer started when my wife encouraged me to photograph a local ride. Prior to that I worked as a police office and wildland firefighter. Photography of those careers had a big influence on ride photography.

I have been honored by the Endurance family with photos published on the front cover of Endurance News as well as other publications.

My goal is always to capture the moment in time when both Horse and rider are one creating a relaxed and fun environment going down the trails. “For me, photography is more than taking pictures; it’s about freezing time and preserving precious moments. When not behind the camera, you can find me on the hiking trails, wetting a fishing line, riding my horse with my wife.

We will have plenty stockpiled but all the water will be hauled in by the fire department and our volunteers.

Please scatter your manure. If your horse digs up his area at all, please fill in holes. Please leave no trace, this is our private place, and we will be the ones that will have to clean up any messes in the end.

DOGS

Dogs must be on leashes or otherwise restrained at all times. Dogs are not allowed in the dining area.

DISTANCE RIDING OVERVIEW

Distance Riding is a great sport for all ages and skill levels. It tests a horse’s condition and stamina, rider intelligence and horse-manship under veterinary supervision on a cross-country trail. Discipline, dedication and sense of adventure are the most important ingredients for success. Competitive Trail and Endurance are the two most popular distance sports, and Arabians excel at both.

The endurance competitor’s motto, “To Finish Is To Win,” applies to all types of distance events. Distance Riding may be highly competitive and challenging or simply a recreational activity combining a camping trip with an extended trail ride.

ENDURANCE RIDING

An endurance ride can best be described as a cross-country contest of 50 or more miles. Horses must be at least 60 months old to compete in an endurance ride under American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) and AHA rules. It is an equestrian athletic event with the same horse and rider covering a measured course within a specified maximum time.

NOVICE RIDES

Novice Rides are 10-15 miles and average six miles per hour with a total ride time between 2-3 hours. This means that most of the ride will be completed at the trot. Ride management will set an allotted time to complete the ride, and the finisher with the best condition will be the winner, not the first horse and rider team to cross the finish line. This ride is not a race.

LIMITED DISTANCE

Limited Distance rides are between 25 to 50 miles in length according to the AERC Limited Distance Program rules. These are open to everyone and usually supported by beginning endurance competitors, those training horses that aren’t ready to go 50 miles, as well as some individuals who just do not want to ride 50 miles or more.

COMPETITIVE TRAIL RIDING

In contrast to an endurance ride, a competitive trail ride is usually shorter, normally 25-50 miles, although multiple day rides could be up to 100 miles. Riders are required to complete the ride within a minimum as well as a maximum time window. Usually time limits are based on a speed of 6 to 8 mph; however this can be slower due to difficult terrain or weather conditions. Riders MUST complete within the time limit or they will be penalized or disqualified. The winner of a competitive trail ride is the horse completing the course in the allotted time in the best condition.

COMPETITIVE DRIVING

Competitive Driving is similar to competitive trail, except that the horses are being driven rather than ridden. Of course, the driving trails are going to be dirt or other roads suitable to horse and carriage. The divisions may be divided into single or pairs of horses.

The Frequent Rider Program (FRP) rewards riders for the time they spend riding/driving their registered Arabian or Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian horses in non-competitive activities. The Arabian Horse Association is committed to recognizing and rewarding the riders who work with and enjoy Arabian and Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian horses in all types of non-competitive riding and driving. The best part of FRP is that the type of riding doesn’t matter as long as it is non-competitive! Whether you use an Arabian or Half-Arabian/ Anglo-Arabian horse to trail ride, do ranch work, gymkhana, participate in parades, take riding lessons, or just ride or drive for pleasure, you can now be recognized and rewarded for what you love most.

HORSE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Ever wonder what the + and / behind a horse’s name mean? This is AHA’s prestigious and widely recognized program for horses that actively compete. Achievement Award symbols printed behind a horse’s name provide a visible sign for honor and prestige. Recognition at each achievement level receives an engraved plaque available to display their achievements. This unique program may be the only one in the equine industry that adds achievement symbols that become a permanent part of a horse’s name. There is also a parallel program for riders; it is called the Amateur Achievement Awards Program.

DISTANCE HORSE AWARDS PROGRAM

The AHA Distance Awards Program honors Arabian and Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian horses for achieving mileage goals by competing in endurance and competitive trail rides. When your enrolled horse has completed 500 miles, a perpetual plaque will be engraved with the horse’s name and registration number. Participants receive a mileage marker to mount on the plaque for each additional 500 miles completed.

This is a year-end program held in cooperation with AHA recognized competitive trail organizations. AHA provides a nice blanket or cooler award to the high point horses in the Arabian and Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian divisions selected by participating organizations. Winners must meet the following criteria: (1) ride a registered Arabian or Half-Arabian/ Anglo-Arabian; (2) must be a current AHA member; and (3) have competed in at least five rides sponsored by that organization.

ENDURANCE HIGH POINT

AERC high-point horses in the 100-mile and 5099 mile ride categories receive a nice product award at the Annual AERC Convention. Because AERC does not track points specifically in the 50-99 mile category, individuals interested in this award must submit an AHA Endurance Horse High-Point Middle Distance Award Application Form and send it in to AHA by December 31st.

DISTANCE HORSE OF THE YEAR AWARD

This award was created to recognize the significant accomplishment of a registered Arabian, and Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian in distance sports. Any AHA member can nominate a horse, which is selected at the annual AHA convention. The winner’s name is engraved on a perpetual trophy, and and they receive a plaque commemorating the achievement.
