Apollo Art Auctions is pleased to present the upcoming sale, ‘Fine Ancient Art – The Prince Collection – The Legend of Tutankhamun’ auction.

The Sale is taking place on 27th July at 1 p.m. GMT. This auction offers a thoughtfully selected group of antiquities from the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman worlds, with particular emphasis on the lasting cultural impact of ancient Egypt. The sale will be held live at our Central London showroom, 63–64 Margaret Street, W1W 8SW, and online via the Apollo Art Auctions platform.

This auction includes a focused group of works from the Prince Collection—a private collection assembled over many years, with attention to historical context, craftsmanship, and provenance.

Highlights include:

Lot 112: Egyptian Ivory and Wood Cosmetic Vessel in the Form of a Grasshopper, believed to be among the “known and potential strays” from the tomb of Tutankhamun, and once part of the collection of the late Howard Carter.

Lot 205: Large Egyptian Granite Funerary Stela of the Lector-Priest Baky and His Wife Ruiu, a striking example of New Kingdom funerary art dedicated to a high-ranking religious official.

Lot 254: Superb Bronze Greek Corinthian Helmet, an iconic form of ancient armour symbolising martial power and prestige in Archaic and Classical Greece.

Lot 298: Stunning Apulian Pelike with Funerary Scene by the Circle of the Varrese Painter, a masterfully painted South Italian vase representing the rich funerary traditions of 4th century BC Apulia.

A large pottery jar with a biconical body tapering towards a pointed base and a tall neck with an outward-flaring rim. The upper body and neck are painted in red, blue, and black on a buff ground, with continuous horizontal bands and a main frieze of two large Wedjat eyes alternating with two ankh signs, each flanked by stylised feathers and floral elements.

A large pottery jar with a biconical body tapering to a pointed base and a tall neck with an outward-flaring rim. The surface is painted in red, blue, and black on a buff ground. The neck is decorated with two registers of vertical petals framed by horizontal bands. The main frieze on the shoulder comprises two stylised lotus flowers with upward-curving stems, a large ankh sign flanked by paired papyrus stalks, and a second ankh flanked by Nilotic plants. A remarkably rare black stone (granodiorite) head of god Amun, with a braided beard and a flat cap. His small eyes are separated by a curved depression from the rounded brow ridge; his broad face shows full lips with sharp contours, and, from the side, a slightly drooping chin. The depiction of the god resembles the facial features of King Tutankhamun. The carving is of fine quality, suggesting the religious importance that this piece played in antiquity. The item is accompanied by a high-quality custom-made stand. 453. EGYPTIAN SANDSTONE VOTIVE STELA OF THE PRIEST DJEHUTYMOSE DEDICATED TO PTAH AND SEKHMET

Third Intermediate Period, XXII Dynasty Ca. 1068-525 BC

A rectangular sandstone stele with a domed top, finely carved. The composition presents the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet standing in profile to the right, wearing a tripartite wig and a sun disk. She faces the god Ptah, who is partially preserved, holding a was-sceptre. The Horizontal hieroglyphic inscription atop the god reads: “Ptah Lord of Maat, chief of the gods”. In front of the goddess Sekhmet, two columns of hieroglyphic text read: “Sekhmet the Great, beloved of Ptah, Mistress of the Sky, Mistress of all Gods.” In the second register, on the right side, Djehutymose is kneeling in adoration gesture, left- ward. In front of him, six column of hieroglyphic text reads from left to tight: ‘Give adotations to Ptah beautiful of face, kiss the ground for Sekhmet Lady of the Two Lans by the Uab-priest chief of the altar in the temple of Ptah Djehutymose’ (he say): ‘Adorations ti thee father of the gosd, who rised the sky, who created the heart. May give you to me life, prosperity, health...’. A modern suspension perforation is drilled through the upper section.

A fragmentary rectangular sandstone relief depicting two male figures in profile facing right. The figure at left carries a pole over the shoulder with suspended offerings, while the figure at right holds a large fish across the torso. The top edge retains a horizontal border. A rectangular fragment of limestone carved in low relief and painted in red, black, and ochre tones. The composition depicts a fisherman standing on the prow of a boat. In the upper right, several fish are shown swimming, while on the left, disembodied legs suggest a figure either entering or exiting the water.

WITH SUNK RELIEF SCENE OF ANTELOPE CAPTURE

A nearly square limestone block carved in sunk relief with a depiction of an antelope striding to the left, its body rendered in profile with slender body and elongated limbs. The animal’s form is defined by incised contour lines and filled with orange pigment. Human hands are shown grasping the antelope from above, suggesting a capture scene.

A fragment of limestone relief, preserving the profile of a royal figure facing right. The head is elongated in typical Amarna style, with a prominent jawline and slender neck. The figure wears a blue-painted close-fitting cap crown. Traces of red pigment remain across the face.

New Kingdom, XVIIIth Dynasty reign of Thutmose III, Ca. 1504-1450 BC

A very rare black granite round topped funerary stela of the ‘ third lector-priest, pure of hands in the temple of Montu ‘, ‘Overseer of the priests of Montu’ Baky and his wife “the mistress of the house” Ruiu. The stela is divided into two registers: in the lunette, on the right - Baky and Ruiu are seated in front of an offerings table with food, on the left of which is a standing man in a consecration gesture: he is her son the third lector-priest Samontu. The second register presents a similar scene, unfortunately, the surface of the stela is worn. On the right, Baky and Ruiu are seated in front of an offering table. On the other side, another couple’s son Djehuty is depicted in a consecration gesture. The vertical text behind him, James another son: Menkheperre-seneb. This anthtoponym, basilophore formed with the prenome of the great pharaoh Thutmosis III, helps to date the stela with certain precision. In the lower portion of the stela in the right are still visible the beginning of the remains of a hieroglyphic text in three lines a with the hetep di nesut formula: ‘ A boon which king gives to Montu......priests.....(may) they give invocation offering of bread and beer oxen and fowl...” For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number EA561.

A limestone sculpture depicting a seated feline with front paws extended and hind legs folded beneath the body. The head is held upright with upward-facing ears, prominent cheeks, and a short, rounded snout. The eyes are closed, and the mouth is slightly curved. A sandstone relief fragment preserving part of a horizontal register with two male figures carved in sunk relief. Both are depicted in profile facing right, wearing close-fitting caps and raising their right arms. Resting across their shoulders is a long, horizontal object carried by both figures, terminating at one end in a trefoil-shaped finial.

A painted wooden lid of a sarcophagus, depicting a mummiform figure with a broad collar composed of rows of multi-coloured beads, the face painted in reddish tones with large, outlined eyes and arched brows, framed by a tripartite wig. The decoration is executed in polychrome over a layer of gesso. The body tapers towards the feet, with a band of hieroglyphic text preserved along the foot section. EGYPTIAN IVORY AND WOOD COSMETIC VESSEL IN THE FORM OF A GRASSHOPPER

Late 18th Dynasty, Ca. 1350 - 1340 BC

A cosmetic container carved in the form of a grasshopper with a segmented body and upper wings made from painted ivory. The head is inset with black eyes and the lower wings are rendered in wood. The wings swing outward to reveal a small oval cavity hollowed into the body intended to hold kohl or perfume. The upper wings are decorated with a subtle checkerboard pattern.

A painted terracotta figure depicting a standing female with elongated proportions. The face is framed by a thick wig painted in alternating black, white and red stripes. The torso is decorated with a regular arrangement of painted dots, and both arms extend straight down alongside the body. The reverse is plain.

RARE EGYPTIAN WOODEN PADDLE DOLL

11th-13th Dynasty, Ca. 2130 – 1650 BC

A wooden figurine with a flat, paddle-shaped body tapering at the top and widening towards the rounded base. The lower section is painted with a checkerboard pattern in red and black. A modelled head made of unbaked clay is attached to the top, with eyes and mouth inlaid using small circular beads. The figure has rudimentary side projections for arms and a stylised wig composed of long strands of disc beads attached on either side of the head. A broad carved wooden sarcophagus mask depicting a stylised male face with a tripartite wig extending over the shoulders and a long false beard. The face is defined by a straight nose, prominent lips, and recessed eye sockets fitted with eyes framed in bronze. EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE FUNERARY OFFERING TABLE OF THE LADY MERET-TETI

Old Kingdom, VI Dynasty, reign of King Teti Ca. 2345 - 2333 BC

A rectangular limestone offering table with a raised outer border and recessed central basin, carved in low relief with an image of piled offerings beneath a curved arch. The composition includes stylised representations of food items such as bread loaves, rendered within the central niche. A broad spout extends from the lower edge, flanked by incised channels to guide the flow of libations. Hieroglyphic inscriptions (‘hetep di nesut formula ‘) are incised, in crude style, along the vertical and horizontal margins, invoking offering formulas for the sustenance of the deceased, a woman called Meret-Teti. This female anthroponym basilophorus, formed with the name of king Teti (Ca. 2345 - 2333 BC), first ruler of VIth Dynasty, suggests a dating for this offering table to the reign of this sovereign. A bronze statuette of the god Amun depicted nude and striding forward with the left leg advanced. The figure is criocephalic, bearing a ram’s head with curved horns, and wears a tripartite wig surmounted by the Red Crown of Lower Egypt. Traces of gilding are visible on the eyes, the base of the crown and on the wig.

A basalt bust of female pharaoh (?) wearing a tripartite wig that frames the face and a wide usekh collar incised across the chest. The facial features are softly modelled, with almond-shaped eyes, a short nose, and a slight smile. The chin is adorned by a fragment of a royal beard. Atop the head rests the pschent crown, uniting the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt, fronted by a uraeus. A single vertical column of hieroglyphs is engraved on the dorsal pillar. The feathers extend upwards symmetrically, tapering slightly toward the top. The base of the crown transitions into a horizontal band representing a fillet, subtly curved to fit the head. A very rare hybrid helmet showing design characteristics of both Phrygian and Chalcidian helmets. A limestone relief depicting a female figure in frontal view. The face has large almond-shaped eyes with incised circles marking the irises and pupils, slightly arched brows, and a small, pursed mouth. The nose is straight, and the cheeks are softly rounded. A headscarf partially conceals the hair, draping over the back and framing the face. The figure wears a draped garment secured at the left shoulder with a finely carved brooch, with deeply incised folds indicating the fabric’s flow. Raised on a bespoke mount.

A massive bronze situla decorated with numerous cast elements. The vertical handle of the vessel is in the form of the god Apollo, standing naked with a quiver of arrows fastened to his back. The spout of the situla is designed in the form of a gryphon eating a horse, with the opening itself formed from the hoof of the horse’s hind leg. The gryphons of Greek mythology had a hatred of horses which stemmed from their war against the mythological Arimaspians, a notably equestrian race. The handle is attached to loops in the form of rosettes and the flat lid is decorated with a figure of a panther eating a deer. A black-glazed hydria with an ovoid body, broad shoulder, cylindrical neck and overhanging lip, all resting on a flaring foot. It has two horizontal handles for lifting and a third vertical handle at the back for pouring. The surface is decorated in the red-figure technique with added white and yellow details. Side A depicts a nude youth with a cloak draped over his left shoulder. He holds two bunches of grapes in his extended right hand, reaching towards a draped female figure standing to the left. She holds a large phiale in her left hand, beneath which a small rosette is placed. Side B shows a large palmette with volute side scrolls extending outward. 619. STUNNING APULIAN PELIKE WITH FUNERARY SCENE BY THE CIRCLE OF VARRESE PAINTER

A red-figure Apulian pelike, circa mid-4th century BC, features a pear-shaped body rising from a low foot, accompanied by twin ver- tical handles capped with a flanged rim. On one side, a winged Eros advances, bearing a wreath above a standing nude youth draped in a chlamys, while on the reverse, a elegantly attired woman holds a phiale towards a draped male carrying a wreath—each scene framed by floral palmettes and rosettes, characteristic of the “plain style” decoration. The black-slip ground is punctuated with reserved clay figures enhanced by applied white details, notably in jewellery and garment hems. A meander pattern encircles the belly above the foot, reflected in palmette friezes on the neck. The vessel’s sinuous neck and rounded belly highlight its functional elegance. Traces of added pigments—yellow and white—remain in selective areas. This pelike exemplifies the South Italian fusion of Greek iconography and local ceramic artistry at its peak. Side A shows a seated winged Nike, her hair arranged in an elaborate style, dressed in a long chiton with marked folds, and holding a beaded wreath in her raised hand. In front of her stands a woman clad in a voluminous himation. Side B presents a pair of women in procession, walking left, both wrapped in long himatia. A large palmette with volutes is placed under each handle, a meander band encircles the lower register, and a laurel wreath motif is painted beneath the rim. RARE SICILIAN POTTERY PLASTIC ASKOS IN THE FORM OF A MOUSE

A terracotta askos in the form of a stylised mouse. The vessel is modelled with a pointed snout, short linear strokes indicating the mouth, circular, applied eyes and prominent ears. The forelegs and hindlegs are drawn along the sides of the body. A vertical spout with a pronounced rim rises centrally from the back; its base is encircled by S-shaped motifs. A second, smaller spout of tapering profile emerges at the rear, positioned above the tail, which curves around the hind part of the body. The surface is decorated with black-painted motifs over a red slip, including intersecting lines, dots, and a frontal palmette placed above the ears. A red-figure askos with a rounded body set on a low ring foot. One end rises into a vertical spout with a flaring rim, while the opposite side curves sharply upward into a pointed, raised projection. A strap handle extends between the spout and the upturned terminal. The main panel depicts a seated maenad facing right, dressed in a finely pleated peplos and adorned with a beaded necklace and fillet. She holds a wreath in her right hand and extends her left palm forward with two shallow bowls. The reverse is decorated with a large palmette flanked by scrolling tendrils. A glass impression after a large carnelian intaglio executed in the 16th century from the French Royal collection (Collection de Louis XIV, Cabinet du Roi; actually Paris BNF - Cabinet des médailles). The scene is composed by a central area with enthroned Zeus, standing Apollo and Hermes with Neptune, surrounded by the twelve zodiacal signs. This intaglio, the so-called “Zodiaque”, is after a drawing of Raphael engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi (1480-1534). A limestone altar of rectangular form, finely carved in high relief on all four sides; the principal face with a seven-branched menorah set upon a stepped altar, rendered in a beaded style; the reverse with a prominent pomegranate framed by curling leaves; the flanking sides each adorned with symbolic vegetation, one bearing a grapevine laden with fruit, the other with a stylised sheaf of wheat. The rim is bordered with a continuous row of triangular dentils; the base supported by four arched feet, the underside deeply recessed in a cruciform pattern. With an even light brown surface and minor wear consistent with age.
